I'm going to try and go through what I suspect the neutrality rules will be generally, based on having watched other sports federations try to navigate this.
No involvement with the army or police institutions including military or police sports clubs. I'm expecting CSKA and Dynamo affiliation will result in ineligibility. So right off that bat that's Melnikova, Vorona, Esipova, Ilyankova, Kustova, and Perebinosova (the first one CSKA, and the other five with Dynamo).
So where does that leave the field from 2023 Russian Nationals? I include the scores which are obviously silly but they do show a certain relative strength of these gymnasts.
Viktoria Listunova - 58.532
Angelina Melnikova - 58.166
Elena Gerasimova - 54.732
Maria Agafonova - 54.332
Uliana Perebinosova - 53.699
Alyona Glotova - 53.566
Yana Vorona - 53.499
Leila Vasilieva - 52.465
Alina Shklokova - 50.465
Yulia Nikolaeva - 49.166
Vladislava Urazova only did beam and it's said that she's out of favor with VRod.
Maria Minaeva was injured last year and she's only on beam at the upcoming Russian Cup.
One note about the scoring, I think there is a fair amount of evidence of degradation in the Russian field during the ban but I still think the high end (i.e. Listunova) should be expected to be on par with where they were in Tokyo. I would lob about 2.5 points off these scores but that still means Listunova and Melnikova are still very good.
But now we've removed the easy people off that list (and doing this exercise on the MAG side is much easier because almost everyone would be excluded). I'm expecting public participation in propaganda and social media support for the war to be enough to exclude you. It will not be "check this box I don't support the war". That's not how basically any sports federation has handled this. I haven't followed the Russian WAG's social media but I expect in the depths of VK or Telegraph a few of them have said some repulsive things but I'll leave that to Russian speakers to find. It's worth saying that every sports federation that has instituted these neutrality conditions has missed someone who has said something repulsive on social media. Fencing even had to pull someone off a start list the morning of a competition.
So now we get to the thorny question: What about that propaganda rally? If Listunova and Gerasimova (who I expect are the strongest potential entrants into the international field) did that today it would almost certainly mean they would be excluded as Listunova is 18 and Gerasimova is 19. My instinct is that the authorities will decide that gymnasts who did such things when they were minors wont be held against them. But that's just a guess on my part.
All the more reason the age limit should go up to 18 for the Olympics in general because if you aren't responsible for your actions you shouldn't be competing with people who are.
The next layer of complication is that given that all the most prominent MAG athletes are bound to be excluded as well as Melnikova there is also a good chance that Valentina will announce that the neutrality conditions are an offense to the honor of Russia and none of the state supported gymnasts will be attempting to gain neutral status. She's signaled that this is possible but that might be saber rattling. Again if I was taking a wild guess... if Listunova is excluded because of the rally they will take a pass on Paris completely.

Russian Cup, stage 4
I’ll try to mention some of the lesser known skaters this time. Because they are all so good but often this is not enough because this is Russia: there are countless talented skaters and only a very limited number of international spots. (I came to the conclussion that - especially in juniors - the key is not to get attached too much to one skater, one team and just appreciate everything we get to see)
Pairs
Sometimes I really can’t wrap my mind around it. They are all sooo good. First warm-up group and they are so good, second group and they are great, third group world class.
Let me scream VIKTORIA VASILIEVA / Nikita Volodin. She was a singles skater a year ago. I saw her two years ago at JGP with my own eyes. And now? She is a pair skater. That was such an awesome debut for this new pair. I am in awe. And especially their Mickmacks FP is great.
I also liked Maria Alchova/Sergei Bezborodko and their Peal Harbour FP. (Poor them and the death spiral though)
Karina Akopova/Nikita Rakhmanin they are speeeed. (Limelight SP and based on my very limited knowledge of cyrilic alphabet a mix of P. I. Tchaikovsky’s music with A. Bocelli’s Fall on me???) Anyway they are so quick on the ice.
I love every Memoirs of a Geisha program and of course I loved Jasmina Kadyrova/Ivan Balchenko and their SP.
I love Boikova/Kozlovskii so so so much. And I love their SP, I’m so happy that we finally saw them. Their SP is so light, tender, classical. Their FP was good but not just that magically great as we maybe got too much used to it. It couldn’t be easy for them skating just hours after their coach’s husband passed away on top of everything else. (I absolutely didn’t know but they formed a pair in 2015 having skated only in singles prior to that.)
youtube
I have to admit I have a complicated relationship with Tarasova/Morozov. Though I liked their Adagio FP and after rewatching Bolero many times, yeah, there’s in fact nothing wrong with this program... They are just not my favourite skaters but I can still see why they are one of the best in the world. If I associate B/K with lightness, T/M are definitely power.
Mishina/Galliamov are back. Well, they were not away, it was just one bad comp and it happened to be Russian nationals which was so unfortunate. They were oozing confidence this time. They were flawless, I loved the low death spiral and the whole Esmeralda SP and the dance lifts and creative choreo sequence in their Bohemian Rhapsody FP.
youtube
Ice Dance, Sr.
I really appreciate that the organizers give the opportunity to foreign skaters training in Russia to unofficially take part in the Russian Cup series. You won’t find them on the results pages, but I think for them the most important thing is that they can skate in whatever form it is...
This time, it was Hungarians Anna Yanovskaya/Adam Lukacs skating to Grease RD and Hymne l’amour FD. (I love these combinations of programs: one more upbeat one more classical).
If I’m counting right it’s at least fifth Grease I’ve seen this (or last) season: Guignard/Fabbri, Shpilevaya/Smirnov, Pavlenina/Aleksanian and the queen and the king of Grease Smart/Diaz - I enjoy watching and comparing these programs, so there’s never too much Singing in the rain, Too darn hot... etc. ;) )
If you want to see passion and also synchronized hydroblades watch Vlada Pavlenina/Aleksandr Aleksanian La sal de la terra FD.
I like L’Opera Rock FD of Svetlana Lizunova/Alexander Vakhnov.
And then Julia Tulseva/Anatolii Belovodchenko. Cabaret / Umbrella. I simply love these programs, Cabaret, Burlesque... And their FD was even better, their speed, the interpretation, the curve lifts, the jazzy feel...
And I’m really happy that Anastasia Skoptsova/Kirill Aleshin won this stage and that they kept their Bonnie & Clyde RD.
Ice Dance, Jr.
Let’s take a look at some junior ice dancers! Of course Arina Ushakova/Maxim Nekrasov (I like their Chicago RD) and Vasilisa Kaganovskaya/Valerii Angelopol (here I like their FD) were the best but there were so many great performances:
Polina Kocherigina/Evgenii Artyushchenko - Mala Luna FD.
Polina Usova/Egor Goncharov - Anything goes RD / Sigur Ros FD. Especially the FD was such a mature performance.
Ksenia Davidova/Michail Antonov - Singing in the rain RD I liked the choreography, the whole performance aaand the speed.
Daria Bukovschikova/Alexander Vdovin - New York, New York RD A relaxing “feel-good” program (a style I really like)
Taisia Linchevskaya/Timur Baklanov-Smirnov - Cabaret RD The stylization, the poses, the carriage on the ice...
Alexandra Shabalina/Maxim Kiryukhin - Romeo and Juliet FD
And now let me present three teams I absolutely fell in love with:
Alina Abdulina/Maxim Nuralyev - Fifty checks / Mindfields I love the variations of the famous P/C lift in the RD. And the more pop/rock feel of the FD and synchronized cartwheels?!!  (I called it “P/C lift” but let’s not be like twitter moral police saying that anyone else doing this lift is a copycat; this lift was there long before P/C, eg. Belbin/Agosto did it...)
Sofia Kachushkina/Oleg Muratov - A chorus line / Walking castle?? I nicknamed them Team Red according to their RD costumes. The RD is such a fun and energetic performance, they even use the lyrics - saying steps, walk, ministeps and they do on the ice. And their FD is totally different, very balletic, like a fairy tale.
youtube
Alisa Ovsyankina/Matvei Samokhin - Aladdin / Dance of the Sugar plum fairy
They are babies and these programs are so fitting for them. The FD is from Nutcracker and I squealed. Yes, yes, yes, yes, that’s a perfromace, that’s so cute and just lovely to watch.

Russian Juniors (Ladies) and Bad Technique (Toe Jumps)
It seems to be a trend, or a rumored trend at the least, that many Russian Junior Ladies nowadays have bad technique on their jumps. Since I love a bunch of the Russian Junior Ladies, and I personally never really placed too much attention on their jump technique, I thought it would be interesting to share how the facts match up with the rumors.
Tumblr media
Eteri’s Juniors
Kamila Valieva
This season, Eteri has once again, produced the top junior (so far) of the season. This time the pupil who has brought her the title is Kamila Valieva. While Valieva has been applauded for her flexibility, her beautiful spins, her lines, and her skating skills, it is rare to see anyone praise her jump technique. There is a reason behind that, and the reason is that Valieva’s jump technique is rather bad.
Tumblr media
Even in real time, and without a closeup, you can clearly see that Valieva’s jump technique in combinations is extremely weak. She bobbles in between the triple lutz and the triple toe loop, and this results in her basically doing the 3T with no speed going in. Though she has managed quite well so far with this technique, it is surely not one to rely on forever.
Tumblr media
This GIF is from JGP Chelyabinsk, the most recent competition, and you can clearly see an outside edge. You can also see quite an amount of prerotation:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Valieva’s outside edge is actually quite good in this competition, but many have claimed that Valieva’s edge is consistently getting worse. This image proves otherwise, and you can see clearly that Valieva still has maintained a rather good outside edge.
However, her biggest issue is with prerotation.
Valieva places her entire blade down on the ice, and this creates a very awkward takeoff that almost make my ankles hurt looking at it. Her takeoff technique is similar to her senior in Eteri’s Camp - Anna Shcherbakova - except it seems to be even worse, as she leaves after 1/2 a rotation. The image above shows clearly that at 1/2 a rotation (when the screenshot was taken) her toepick is still on the ice.
Tumblr media
On Valieva’s 3F, we see a similar issue. The edge is correct, but the prerotation is massive and results in a full blade.
Tumblr media
However, the entrance doesn’t look nearly as awkward as the lutz, and she leaves the ice before 1/2 a rotation. Her edge is constant and never looks to be close to flat or outside. I would definitely say her flip is leagues better than her lutz.
Surprisingly, Valieva’s toe loop technique is also better than her lutz.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This shot is of Valieva’s 4T at 180 degrees. She definitely has taken off before 180, as you can see her foot is pretty high off the ice. Toeloops actually allow for up to 180 degrees PR (a fan made standard I believe actually), so her 4T technique isn’t that bad!
Daria Usacheva
This girl is one of my personal favorites. I love how expressive her movements are, and how powerful her steps can be. However, while her jump technique is better than Valieva’s, it’s not wonderful in anyway either.
Tumblr media
Though her lutz edge, even in real time, is obviously very shallow, and possibly a flat edge, you can see that the takeoff is not nearly as awkward as Valieva’s.
Tumblr media
Right as the toepick hits the ice, Dasha’s blade is flat or slightly inside. Her entrance is kind of similar to Medvedeva’s, in the sense that she gets on an outside edge before she picks, but rocks into a flat/slightly inside edge when she actually gets off the ice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, like Valieva, Dasha also uses a full blade. Unlike Kamila however, she doesn’t place her entire blade onto the ground, and so...
Tumblr media
She leaves the ice a little before 180 degrees, somewhere around 160-170 I would say. This make her technique very similar to Sasha Trusova’s, who also uses a full blade, but doesn’t completely slam her blade on the ice. Another reason Kamila’s takeoff might look more awkward is because right as she picks off the ice, she uses a full blade, while Dasha stats out with a toepick and then places the rest of the blade on the ice.
Tumblr media
Her flip has very similar technique to her lutz, so I’m not going to go into full detail about it. (Interestingly, you can see that Dasha’s full blade never fully hits the ice, rather she places the toepick in a sideways manner that allows her to rotate on the ice).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dasha has a proper inside edge on her flip, not surprising since she has a flutz.
Similar to her lutz, Dasha takes off just a little before 180 degrees, since she doesn’t put her full blade on the ice. She does still PR more than the allowed amount however.
Maiia Khromykh
While I definitely prefer the former two skaters to Maiia, I feel like people don’t nearly give her enough credit. Her FS choreo is terrible and so she can’t so off how elegant she is and how nice her lines are, but there are certain moments when you can see how nicely she controls her lines and movements. But, how does her jumping technique compare with her training mates?
Tumblr media
Again, the edge looks fine, but the prerotation looks rather obvious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When the toepick hits the ice, Maiia is at a slightly outside edge, but once her full blade hits the ice, the blade shifts to a slightly inside edge. Maiia’s technique is like a mix of Kamila and Dasha’s. She doesn’t immediately hit the ice with her blade, but she also fully puts her blade on the ice.
This angle is horrible! But I can only guess that here Maiia has left the ice. I would guess she has 170-180 degrees of PR.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here, it seems more obvious that Khromykh picks with her blade, which is odd considering she takes off a little before 180 degrees on the flip as well.
Conclusion:
All of Eteri’s students have improper jump technique. I would say Valieva has the worst prerotation technique, while Usacheva’s is slightly better than the rest.  None of them are good though. So, those who say Tutberidze’s new trio of juniors don’t have the best technique are not in the wrong.
Panova’s Juniors
Kseniia Sinitsyna
Kseniia is my other favorite junior this season (along with Dasha). Her technique is much better than those who are coached by Tutberidze. Panova is actually known for teaching textbook technique and training students who have good skating skills and edges.
Tumblr media
Her jumps look really nice and tight in real time because she has excellent air position, and a very nice rippon as well. But how do they measure when we slow them down?
Tumblr media
Again, very nice outside edge on the lutz!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kseniia has a very nice outside edge here, but in the second picture it seems that she has a full blade. Its odd, though, that despite having what seems to look like a full blade, Kseniia leaves the ice at around 90 degrees (a little more, but not by too much). So what do you think? Is it textbook? Or does the possible full blade mean Kseniia also has bad technique.
Tumblr media
Again, very nice edge with a good lift and good transitions into the flip.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The same strange technique that Kseniia uses on her lutz appears here as well. She seems to have a full blade, but still PRs within a good amount.
Anna Frolova
Another one of the more underrated skaters. I have personally never purposefully actually looked into Frolova’s technique, so I am excited to see how Panova trained her!
Tumblr media
While the PR looks to be pretty good, the edge seems to look less stable than Kseniia’s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I suspected, the edge is flat, bordering inside, and like Kseniia, she uses a full blade. She, like Kseniia, lifts off the ice at around 100 degrees, and so the PR is definitely within a good amount.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It also seems like Frolova uses a full blade on the flip, but I’m not sure. By the time she is at around 75 degrees, she is already using a toepick so that’s what I included. Again, pretty good technique!
Conclusion:
Panova’s students are known for having relatively good technique. They usually PR an acceptable degrees, and though Frolova doesn’t have the best lutz edge, that seems to be a rarity within Panova students.
Davydov’s Juniors
Viktoria Vasilieva
Another one of my underrated favorites this season. Similarly with Frolova, I have never looked closely at Vasilieva’s technique, so I am interested to see how textbook her technique really is.
Tumblr media
The jump looks pretty nice in real time - with a pretty good outside edge (from what I can see), and a very nice rippon.
Tumblr media
Here, we can see that the edge looks a lot less deep than it does in real time. However, it still looks to be an outside edge. Her takeoff is also very nice to the eyes, similar to the Panova students.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vasilieva seems to barely manage an outside edge when she picks. Her technique is not as strange as those of Tutberidze’s students, and she seems to be able to keep an outside edge. She does, however, use full blade and that results in her having 180 degrees PR.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like her lutz, Vasilieva has a full blade and takes off around 180 degrees. However, she does have the correct edge.
Conclusion
Russian skaters don’t seem to struggle on flip edges, but many of their lutz edges can only barely pass. The two Panova skaters both have very good technique in terms of PR, and Sinitsyna seems to be the most full Russian skater there is, with good edges, good PR and good interpretation. Anyways, this doesn’t mean that these skaters are bad, they just weren’t taught the correct technique.
PR amounts (best estimates):
1. Sinitsyna - 95 degrees
2. Frolova - 100 degrees
3. Usacheva - 165 degrees
4. Khromykh - 175 degrees
5. Vasilieva - 175 degrees
6. Valieva - 185 degrees

Ranking the programs - JGPF 2019 Junior Ladies
Started doing it last year, did not finish, let’s try to be better this year. Again I want to say that the order is strictly personal. It entirely depends on my personal tastes. A program can be objectively good, and leave me entirely cold, which means he’ll be at the bottom of the list. Also in my case, music can break or make a program and is a least responsible for 50% of my enjoyment of said program.
So let’s dive right into it with the junior ladies. This year’s crop had on average  better choreo than last season (mainly because there were only two Daniil G progs :) ). From least favorite to favorite.
THE SHORT
6 - Please don’t make me love you - Daria Usacheva
Daria is a very gifted skater who is able to pull off the atrocious program she’s given. She tries really hard to detail every single movement, she’s surprisingly polished for her age and sells the short. Unfortunately the choreo is shit, so there’s nothing to show. The music is horribly cringy, the rest is typical Gleich, with its gazillion transitions that do not match the music at all and could be transposed to any piece of music.
What about the costume? Nice dress, but that’s also part of the typical Eteri-girl package, with lots of rhinestones. Olga Ryabenko did not knock it out of the park this time. Also I don’t like the colour she wears. I don’t care for the pastel-y grey and pink. Give me bright colours you cowards! 5/10
5 - Chopin, Nocturne in C Minor - Haein Lee
Nothing wrong with it. Nothing great about it either. A bit bland, a bit boring, a bit of a safe choice for Haein who is a wonderful skater with great lines and musicality
What about the costume? 5/10 Again, I find the colour boring. Not fan of the outline either.
4 - Tron Legacy/The Fifth Element - Viktoria Vasilieva
I applaud Viktoria for deciding to skate to something a bit different. The choreo with its straight and angular arm moves is a good fit. She’s not the most expressive skater but has a lot of energy and is really musical. You will rarely see her missing a musical beat.
What about the costume? I disliked her previous dress, the black one with the yellow fluo lines; but her new one is an improvement. 7/10. I like the geometric patterns. Lots of sparkles, makes for a nice effect when she spins.
3 - Boy on a Ball - Kamila Valieva
For the life of me, I can never remember to name of the music Valieva skates to, so I just refer to the SP as the Boy on a Ball, of the Picasso SP. I absolutely adore the concept. The painting coming alive is a wonderful idea. I love the music choice. Very minimalist, delicate, and somehow fitting... The execution does not follow through. The choreo is far too busy for such a music. I actually don’t mind the leg kicks. I think they fit the program and the character she’s portraying. It also gives the program a distinc look. I like it. Otherwise... This SP had such potential and is disappointing. Mostly I can quite love it because I’m always fairly underwhelmed by Valieva’s performance. I think the girl is putting on herself an insane amount of pressure, she nearly always looks like she’s going to burst into tears at the beginning, and always rushes through. So far she has not shown any connection with the music and always rushes through.
What about the costume tho? 10/10. Straight from Picasso’s painting. I love it.
2 - Don’t Rain on My Parade - Alysa Liu
One of my favourite programs of the season. And one I rewatch the most, just because, I know it will put me in a good mood. Never fails. This program is just pure joy. It fits Alysa like a glove. And the lyrics are so her. The music choice is deliciously tongue in check. Anyway Alysa is one hell of a performer. The choreo is great. Lots of transitions added since last season. The stepsequence is a blast! I mean how can you not love Alysa doing the fingerguns on “Eye on the target and BANG”. Also the attitude, the wink, the flying kiss during the second spin... It’s great. It just is.
What about the costume? The pink dress, with the big blue gem is cute. Not very original but very cute. 7/10
1 - Alfonsina Y El Mar - Ksenia Sinitsyna
A masterpiece. It’s intricate. It’s mature. It’s soft and delicate. The choreo is full of details that are like small gems. And Ksenia is really the full package, and fingers crossed she will make it to the top, without being part of the Eteri team.
What about the costume? Really beautiful. I like the blue colour used. I liked the cut of the dress, and the V-Line. I like the wave-like patterns in the back and along the collar. 9/10
THE FS
6 - Exogenesis Symphony part III - Kamila Valieva
That FS is a big no. How  you take Exogenesis and manage to choreograph something that does not reflect the music in any way is beyond me. Seriously nothing is choreographed according to the musical accents. Kamila skates, the music plays. Nothing to see.
I do like the costume tho. The purple grunge butterfly is interesting, and definitely a bold choice. 9/10
5 - Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso, de Camille Saint-Saëns - Viktoria Vasilieva
I adore Rondo capriccioso, and the choreo is decent. Nothing to write home about, but nice.
What about the dress? Meh 5/10
4 - Je suis Malade - Daria Usacheva
I was really sceptic at first because I did not think a thirteen years old could pull this off. Unfortunately Daria is currently the best of Eteri’s junior at interpretation, so the team decided “LET’S GIVE HER BIG DRAMA PROGS”, instead of, I dunno, something less heavy.
Not only does Daria manage not to get drowned by the overwhelming vocals, she actually succeeds in pulling this off. I’ve read an interview where she said that she was a bit scared at first, but really feels her FS, and it really shows. She’s skating her heart out, and her performance, is not only intense, but also wonderfully sincere. She stays honest, and true to herself, does not cheat, and was able to make this beast of a FS hers. Truly outstanding.
What about the costume? I like it. Like the heart-shaped ornementations along the neckline. I like the dégradé of red. 8/10
3 - Illumination - Alysa Liu
Alysa’s coaches makes A+++ choices in terms of packaging. This is a very nice FS, as mature as can be expected of her, and really designed to help her grow artistically. I love the music. The beginning is a bit empty, as she basically skates up and down the rink, trying to land her crazy content, but after that it goes nicely. Alysa is always very musical, focused, and gives the energy and power this piece of music requires.
And the costume? 7/10. Very nice.
2 - Oma Asa Toma/Dakini IV - Ksenia Sinitsyna
The choreo is a wonder. Intricate and full of interesting steps and turns. Lovely choreo for the arms. Probably because this is a demanding program, with all the combos backloaded, Ksenia tends to put aside the performance to focus on the tech. Understandable, but because of that the program does not snap like it should.
The costume? Well there’s a discussion to be held about cultural sensitivity, on insensitivity, but Ksenia’s dress and makeup were meticulously crafted, with nothing left aside. I appreciate that commitment to details. 7/10
1 - Riverdance, Firedance - Haein Lee
The Stepseq is one of the best of the season. When all the jumps have been landed, Haein just lets it loose and sets the rink on fire. And it’s so fucking great to watch!
Costume - Haein’s dress remind me so much of Mao’s dress for her last FS, that I cannot not love it. The red suits her really well. I love the rose in her hair. I like the shape of the skirt. 9/10

Junior Ladies SP
WOW, so impressed by each of these young skaters. I don’t really follow juniors too closely because I don’t have quite the time for that on top of seniors, but this was IMPRESSIVE. I think I enjoy the skating of the two Junior Eteri Skaters more than any of the ladies that are currently in Senior’s, especially Daria’s, her program was just gorgeous. Alysa is an adorable powerhouse and I’ve loved her since nats last year, but I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by the rest of the junior field

Video
A video celebrating 20 years of Viktoria Tereshkina at the Mariinsky!  Viktoria graduated from the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet in the class of Marina Vasilieva in 2001 and joined the Mariinsky Theatre the same year.  5 years later, in 2006, she was promoted to prima ballerina and has been the favorite of audiences not only in Saint Petersburg, but the world over.  This video shows 4 clips ranging from 2003 to 2021.  She is known particularly for her brilliant technique and powerful acting, with her favorite roles being dramatic such as Queen Mekhemene Banu from A Legend of Love.  However, she also likes the roles people are surprised to see her in, including Juliet and Giselle, and her dream role is Manon.

Junior Grand Prix Final: Ladies Short
GPF is my favorite competition of the season since the top six skaters in each discipline all meet here. It’s not like GP/Euros/Four Continents where (usually) only the top three/four are competitors for Worlds. And it’s not like Worlds where some really amazing skaters from really competitive countries don’t make the cut. And you’ve even got the amazing juniors as well, who finally get to compete in a proper arena with an actual audience!
But the judging at GPF, as with all competitions, is not the most consistent. So far, the Junior Ladies SP was amazing in terms of jumps completed cleanly, but the judging… I have some questions.
1. Alysa Liu - USA
Disclaimer: I don’t particularly like Alysa. It’s 100% my fault since the only reason I don’t like her is because I like the following five skaters too much. I think Alysa’s short is okay and it actually really suits her. There’s a lot of charm and charisma in her SP and a whole lot of personality too. The cuteness and energy of it kind of hides her weaknesses and I actually think the program itself is pretty good. I don’t really like Alysa’s jumps, their too muscled for my taste, but I do have to applaud her for being so courageous as to add 2 3As and 2 4Lzs. She’s also improving her PCS and working with the amazing Carolina Kostner so I am looking forward to her growth in artistry later on.

2. Daria Usacheva - RUS
MY FAVORITE JUNIOR THIS SEASON! Dasha was first in my heart today and she totally deserved a new SB. Her jumps are all performed with transitions in and out, and transitions of amazing quality as well. Her combo spin and layback are beautiful, performed with speed, quality and good centering. Her flying sit is a little on the slow side, but I don’t care. People often criticize her “blank face” but I don’t mind it at all. She expresses her emotion and passion through her movements (which, imo, is a more sophisticated way of expression). Her step sequence is wonderful, with highlights on musical accents, and good flow and speed throughout. Her first 2A performed with spread eagle-2A-spread eagle was amazing! So much quality! I also love her arm movements, they feel very balletic and elegant to me. I hope this momentum carries into her free. I really want her to win. Good luck in the FS!! (Okay, but that costume is BEAUTIFUL!)

3. Kseniia Sinitsyna - RUS
WHAT ARE THOSE PCS. When you’ve got a skater with so much class, elegance and amazing SS, you can’t give her a 30 in PCS. It wasn’t the best she’s performed, but it was still really amazing. I really like her step sequence, there’s not a lot of pizzazz, but there’s this quality of maturity and class, and she pays attention to every detail, making the program seem complete (that step sequence 3 though, are you kidding me?). Her spins are fast and performed with quality as well, especially the biellmann in her layback. Her technique is pure and in terms of PR, close to textbook. Good edges and good flow and speed. I love her jumps, they have transitions in and out, and the rippon is beautiful. Judges stop underscoring Kseniia! If she performs as she did in Italy for the free, I will crown her my JGPF champion no matter the score. Good luck in the FS!

4. Kamila Valieva - RUS
Oh how I love Kamila. She was clearly nervous today, and yet still performed very well. Her first 3Lo was a little weak, but she quickly got into focus by the next jumping pass. I liked this program more last year, I don’t really know why. It kind of feels like she’s rushing some of the movements in the first few seconds. My favorite jump of hers has to be the 2A with the biellmann grab out and on the music. Again, her last two spins were AMAZING, top quality. The flying sit traveled a little bit more than it usually did, but it still got level 4. Looks like she’s coming out of an injury though… I really wanted her to win this one. Good luck for the FS!

5. Viktoria Vasilieva - RUS
Vika’s so underrated and underestimated honestly. She skates with flow, speed, and ease. Even though this program’s music cuts are very interesting, I actually think she performs it really well. Even though Sasha is my no. 1 of all time, I feel like Vika does the Diva Dance step sequence better, there’s more emphasis on musical accents and more face and energy put into the steps. She spins fast and centers her spins well as well, so I don’t understand why people don’t appreciate her. She can handle the dark opening music well, and also let out and express in the upbeat step sequence. She’s really consistent as well, and I wish her the best for the FS.

6. Haein Lee - KOR
Also… what are those PCS? This program is elegant, beautiful and performed with poise and maturity, and you give her less than 30 in PCS? She doesn’t rush her movements and that adds a mature feeling to her skating. The +3T was UR, but that doesn’t mean her PCS should be reduced to 29! The transitions into the 2A are beautiful! I love her ina bauer! Ugh, she’s so beautiful and she moves with such grace, fitting perfectly with the music. I cannot understand her PCS in any way. Her spins are great too, not the most flexible, but quality of positions and the speed is very good.

Also I think Sasha Trusova is actually an alien. 5 quads in practice along with 3A? Only Sasha would be so brave.
