"Minerva" is the Roman name of the Greek Athena, goddess of wisdom and philosophy, and associated with the owl (as preserved in the saying "bringing owls to Athens" which means bringing something to a place that already has more than enough thereof).
The meaning of Hegel's saying is that philosophy or wisdom takes flight only at the end of the day, after the day's main events have taken place.
For Hegel, this was not tragic. His particular point is that it is only at the end of human history - which he associated with his own time, the early 19th century - that human beings can come to understand history's developmental logic.
In fact, our coming to understand history is part of this developmental logic; and once we fully understand we are reconciled to history and thus would not have wanted history to have gone differently in any important respect.
god what if theres a 3x15 deleted scene with sid and sullivan getting in the rolls and sullivan saying he's always wanted to drive it and sid just Looks at him
(they wouldnt go in the rolls probably cause it's obvious who'd be driving it but that could be used instead. sull like oh not the rolls? and sid still gives him a look)
Here's what happened when I threw hedgehogs, childhood trauma, Owl of Minerva aftermath, and Sullivan being invited to stay for dinner into the Fic Blender (tm).
Inspired by the Betty statue in FnC, I decided to draw a Minerva statue of sorts - the composition is loosely based on common pose work found in many real Minerva statues, and the 'owl of Minerva' in this case is the Cosmic Owl himself! I also went with a sort of lantern fixture rather than a fountain as being a source of light seemed fitting for the goddess of wisdom ^^
Ch 1 doodles as I listen to the audiobook. Please don’t pay attention to my lack of care with the high chair. Vernon Dursley is a pathetic alt of Ron Swanson if I were to try to imagine him any different than the late actor cast to play him.
Re: your tag about "Minerva" preening for the cameras... how do we feel about vampires and photography when they're in beastform? Like we all know you can't capture the image of a vampire, but does that apply when they have taken on some other image? Could the Whitby RSPCA have photographed Dogcula had they caught him?
My money is on the local photographers pulling their hair out because they all swear on their lives that they got quality shots in the moment, but every time they develop with this strange blurring haze effect. There's an animal shape, but no animal--certainly nothing to turn in to a prospective newspaper or biology text. Even when the unique critters are perfectly still! The eyes are certainly crisp enough, almost lambent, but ugh, not a single clear photo out of the whole roll. Curses.
Unrelated, I think Quincey himself can probably take a decent photo. The eyes are still a bit brighter than they should be, but if Lu were to haul him into a photo booth they could come away with a nice memento that doesn't just have her sitting with a Quincey-shaped patch of fuzz
For obvious reasons, the Fowls are Corvidae- intelligence, curiosity, strong family bonds… and a proclivity for extreme mischief.
Artemis Fowl II- Western Jackdaw:
An underappreciated little corvid with glossy black feathers and bright blue eyes, perfect for Artemis! I've already mentioned corvid intelligence, but let me note in particular they are incredible problem solvers... and sometimes a little silly.
Artemis Fowl I (Fowl Senior)- Common Raven:
Clever? Check! Iconic? Check! Believed to be unfortunate to come across? Unfortunately, check! And finally, appropriately scruffy? Check!
Angeline Fowl- Barn Owl:
Well, some member of the family deserved to be an owl, and Barn Owls have the perfect mix of elegance, beauty and intellect to suit Angeline- they’re also quite cute, and can be very silly (spoken from experience!)
Myles and Beckett Fowl- Stellars’ Jay and Blue Jay:
Look at these birds and tell me it’s not the twins. Jays are known for mischief-making, extreme intellect (despite often being underestimated) and colorful, loud personalities- perfect for them!
Domovoi Butler- Golden Eagle:
A classic! While I was originally thinking ‘owl’, eagles have a certain reputation of nobility and power- they’ve also historically been used in falconry. They are fierce, protective, and incredibly strong birds.
Juliet Butler- Black and Chestnut Eagle:
While I was this close to going with a Crested Caracara or some form of kite, Juliet deserves ‘eagle’ status alongside her brother. Further research led me to various ‘hawk-eagles’, smaller than their more famous cousins and built just a little bit different- this bird is colorful and quick and still quite powerful. Though, in all truth, I imagine Juliet would dye her feathers green no matter what wings she’d have.
Holly Short- Common Kestrel:
A small bird for a small fairy! While a kestrel is one of the smallest raptors, they are nonetheless incredibly fierce and capable of some pretty fancy flying, including the unique ability to ‘hover’ in midair!
Mulch- Burrowing Owl
I don’t think I really have to explain myself here, lol.
(now… onto the villains! Be warned for some blood ahead!)
Opal Koboi- Little Brown Bat
Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Why not a vampire bat? She’s a villain!” And A. It feels too easy, and B. Vampire bats are highly social (which, granted, most bats are), and more importantly, known to take care of older or sick members of their swarm! That is too compassionate for Opal. So instead, I chose something known for being small, fairly ‘cute’, and, most importantly-
Absolutely full of rage.
Jon Spiro- Peregrine Falcon
A cosmopolitan bird, the peregrine falcon is a bird perfectly at home in the big city-in fact, peregrine falcons have been observed to fly faster and hunt more successfully when among the skyscrapered skyline! Primarily preying on other birds, the peregrine falcon is a serious threat, even if it's not particularly big or strong, and its urban lifestyle makes it well-suited to one Jon Spiro.
Britva- Giant Petrel
A relatively underrated villain in the series, but in my opinion the most grounded in reality and particularly intimidating. Given the Bay of Kola is his territory, a seabird felt appropriate, and these birds are big, bad, and brutal. A true scourge on other creatures, that's for sure.
Damon Kronski- Blood Pheasant
Finally, some Galliforme representation! These birds are relatively uncommon in the world of public knowledge, but very flashy- just look at it! The males are brightly-colored, but sharply-spurred, and can be quite fierce when disturbed.
Teddy Bleedham-Drye- Cape Vulture
I don't really think I need to elaborate here, lol.
Do you ever think about how spiders are named arachnids because of the story of Arachne and Athena and how Athena’s companion was an owl and how that’s why the little owl’s scientific name is Athene Noctua and how cool owls are
Fourth and last painting of a series with a Greek mythology theme
The little owl as been the symbol of the goddess Athena, and later her Roman counterpart Minerva, for a long time and in some European languages their usual name still reflect that link. In many places in southern Europe, the owl is still considered a symbol of wisdom and knowledge, and people often gift little owl figurines to students for good luck in studies and exams
for @lavendergalactic's event - day 2: two characters from different medias that you think will get along well
James Ratri + Toshiro Kasukabe rentry graphics
James and Toshiro are quite similar in the fact that they’re both in positions of power with James being a head of the Ratri clan, and Toshiro serving as a politician. Both are supporters of an organisation that fights back against the established system, with James taking on the identity of William Minerva to help the orphans, and Toshiro secretly supporting the Phantom Thieves. Both have been fought against by members of their family, as James is eventually killed by his brother’s commands, and Toshiro’s father is responsible for the position that he’s under as well as his survivor’s guilt.
I do feel like if they met they’d rally together under a common cause. I can see Toshiro in the TPN universe working in one of James’s shelters to help any runaway orphans, and James in the Persona universe as some sort of social link. They’re both father figures. To me.
