Adonis Otogari and Microaggressions in Ensemble Stars

So, I'm sure you've all seen the most recent Adonis card. It's very pretty, it's got frills and other cute things Don isn't usually seen in...

...However, I'm sure at least some of you also noticed he's a bit on the pale side here when compared to other cards.

Why is this? Why would he be drawn noticeably lighter here and not other times? Well, one could imagine it has something to do with colorism.

Like I said before, Adonis isn't usually seen like this. The one time he's not shirtless for no reason or wearing something culturally insensitive, he suddenly looks paler.

Adonis is portrayed as "exotic" and "sexy" a lot of the time (which, if it wasn't already weird to do that with your only brown character, he's also 17, so...) and all those times, he's noticeably brown.

It's been a long standing stereotype that brown skin doesn't fit "cute" or "pretty" aesthetics. That those are for light skinned people, and light skinned people only.

Within the story itself presents another issue. In the story, Adonis goes to a flea market with Hajime. Adonis wants to sell a doll from his childhood, and has no luck until a little girl shows up.

(I'd like to specify I'm not a translator so I'm not 100% sure myself on what is exactly said, but this is going off what I read in the TL I read) The little girl tugs on Hajime to get his attention, because she's afraid to approach someone "as big" as Adonis.

This is something present in multiple enstars stories that feature Adonis. They even use Aira as a mouthpiece for this, a character who is not only supposed to be a fan of Undead, but a character who should also know what it's like to be made fun of for being mixed, as Aira was made fun of for having a half french mom when he was younger. Adonis is spoken about and described as if he's this huge, hulking monster of a boy, and he's just terrifying to look at, but is he? No.

I said on my Twitter just the other day, that every so often enstars will try to make a point about how people like Adonis are treated, but they fail because the point always comes across more as "he might seem scary but he's a really nice guy, don't judge a book by it's cover!" rather than what it should be, which is "there's nothing particularly scary about Adonis, people just demonize brown/black people for the color of their skin."

Now, you'll notice there seems to be a bit of a focus on how "big" Adonis is. How tall is he? About 5'10", which is about as tall as the tallest Ensemble Stars characters are. Adonis is around the same height as Midori, Eichi, Keito, the other members of Undead, etc. If people being afraid of him was really all about his size, you think we'd hear about it more from characters other than him. But, it seems like a topic very focused on him.

Now this isn't just a cover for characters being frightened by him for the color of his skin, the focus on Adonis being "big" when he's the same height as all the other tall characters in enstars is reminiscent of another stereotype. The "big black man" stereotype. Stereotypes about brown and black men don't just portray them as threatening creatures, but as LARGE threatening creatures. This stereotype of black men being very "big" and tall is not just a stereotype used for portraying us as a threat, but it's also seen in the oversexualization of black men.

This isn't just present in the narrative or said by other characters, but it's said by Adonis himself. A moment that comes to mind is a time where he refers to Mitsuru (and the other members of Ra*bits), as small, and talks about "protecting small creatures". Now, Mitsuru is 5'6", and the height difference between Adonis and Mitsuru is actually quite minimal.

And yet, the enstars writers feel the need to not only make other characters react to Adonis as if he's a huge scary guy, but have Adonis think that way about himself.

Like I said before, any social commentary Ensemble Stars tries to have fails when they feed into it like this. It shouldn't be "Adonis is a really nice and sweet guy despite looking scary", it should be about how he doesn't look scary at all.

Enstars wants to make good points, that much I can tell, but it contradicts itself with things like this, and that's pretty disheartening.

I mean think about it, Ensemble Stars has characters who have possibly committed murder, attempted murder, threatened other characters, carry weapons openly, are trained assassins, etc but the scariest of them all is the blasian middle eastern boy who's hobby is literally watching small animals and plays the ocarina? I mean c'mon.

Koga: Well, you’ve been yappin’ non-stop about the event at Seisoukan and hypin’ it up like crazy, haven’t you?

It piqued my curiosity enough to check it out, and I found out there’re chefs from this guy’s home country attending too.

Adonis: That’s why Oogami and I are here, to try some authentic cuisine from my homeland―

―and it’s all thanks to your enthusiastic promotion of the event. Thank you, Mikejima-senpai.

Madara: You’re very welcome! I hope you’ll enjoy the taste of your homeland too ☆

Sora: HaHa~ ♪ Good morning, Giant-san! ♪

Madara: OH! It’s Sora-san and Subaru-san.

Subaru: Yes! Since it’s an invitation from our roommate, Mamu-senpai, how could we not show up, right?

It would’ve been perfect if Hibiki-senpai could’ve come along too, but he seems to have something going on. However, in his place―

Subaru: TADA~AH! Natsume has joined our party~ ☆

Natsume: SeriousLY? I’m not here to replace Wataru-nii-san at aLL. I’m only here because I didn’t want to let Baru-kun monopolise Sora for the entire dAY.

Madara: Yes, indeed. I’m very grateful to everyone who showed interest!

Sora: Yes! Sora is so thankful to learn about such a fun event!

Madara: (Where’s Anzu-san now… … Hmmm?)

Whoops, did I startle you? My apologies for speaking up from behind you so suddenly!

What are you doing, lurking behind this food stall? … … Hmmm? “I’m not lurking at all”―you say?

Hmm, hmm. You’re helping out at the food stalls that are short-staffed because of the sudden increase in visitors―

―and that’s why you’re peeling potatoes now?

I don’t think there’s any obligation for you to help them, Anzu-san. But then again, you’re the type of person who can’t ever turn a blind eye to someone in need, huh… …

Alright, count me in! I’ll pitch in and lend a hand too ☆

Why are you holding me back nowww? … … You’re being considerate because you think I’ve been working hard as the PR General earlier?

Madara: HAHAHA! There’s no need to worry about me at aaall! My stamina is as boundless as the sea, you knowww!

I made the decision to take charge of this event after all, so I want to see it through to the very end!

Madara: Thank you for waiting, Anzu-san! The taiyaki stand has been saved!

More specifically, we were able to increase the turnover after the stall owner and I divided the work among ourselves. We managed to clear the long line that had formed before I arrived in just thirty minutes―

And now that stall owner’s acquaintance has rushed over to help, I’m relieved of my duties now! All’s well that ends well! ☆

And as a token of appreciation for my assistance, the stall owner has given me some taiyaki too.

Let’s eat them together, while they’re still warm. Here we gooo~ ♪

Madara: Sweet treats savoured after performing good deeds always taste especially delicious, don't they? They're on a whole other level.

… … Anzu-san. Thank you for appointing me to be the event’s PR General.

That was Tsumugi-san’s idea―you say? Hahaha, well, that much is true but―

You were the one who set things in motion, right? If you hadn’t decided to liven up the event, Anzu-san, I wouldn’t even be here.

Madara: … … That’s right. It’s just like when you were peeling potatoes behind the food stalls. There wasn’t any obligation for you to help out at all.

Even if ES were to be labelled as “a saboteur of other companies’ projects”, that wouldn’t tarnish your reputation as a Producer in the slightest.

Madara: Er, I know it’s kind of a downer for me to be asking this, but―why did you decide to take action here?

“Because I want to see people smile”―you say? And―“Because I know how frustrating it is to see the projects one has worked so hard on fail.”

Madara: Yes. It’s incredibly painful when one’s efforts don’t pay off, isn’t it?

You’re sooo kind, Anzu-san. Mama is sooo glad you grew up to be such a good child ♪

You’re not my Mama―you say? HAHAHA! It’s sooo cute the way you always react to what I say so smartly! ☆

Because you wanted to see people smile, huh… … You’re right. A smile is like the sunshine that brightens up the world.

I, too, am happy when I see you smile, Anzu-san.

Well, now that we’re done eating, let’s get moving.

When don’t we take a stroll together before heading back to ES? I’d like to buy some souvenirs for Tsumugi-san.

WHEN THERE’S A BUG IN YOUR ROOM

ft. itsuki shu, morisawa chiaki, otogari adonis, ran nagisa, saegusa ibara

Shu hears your call–Shu, can you come here, please–and comes to check on you, but you shouldn’t expect any help from him.

The minute he catches sight of the bug, he’s squawking indignantly. He’s not above using you as a human shield in this scenario. No matter how much he loves you, there’s absolutely nothing you can say that will convince him to go anywhere near that–in his words–disgusting insult to art.

Honestly, he’s just surprised you called him. His aversion to bugs might be even greater than yours, and that’s saying something.

He cowers behind you, and you’re trapped because now you have both a clingy boyfriend and a bug in your room and while your instincts are screaming at you to hide behind Shu, you still recall the piercing shrieks that came out of his mouth when you so much as implied placing him in the so-called line of fire.

In the end, the two of you end up calling Mika to take care of your little…‘home invader’, who’s unable to hold back his look of confusion when he enters your room and spots both you and Shu balanced awkwardly on a chair that was definitely not made to hold more than one person.

After hearing your call, please come quickly, I need your help, please, Chiaki doesn’t spare a moment before he rushes to your defence. Truly, he is embodying that heroic spirit he adores so much!

While he’s not usually one for bugs, finding them a little off-putting, he sets aside his fear in favour of helping you out. After all, a hero must be able to protect his loved ones to the best of his ability! And it’s true that he loves you very much.

Carefully, carefully, he scoops up the bug with a leftover magazine–his hands are shaking slightly all the while, but he refuses to admit it–and tosses it out the window.

When he’s completed his objective, there’s a moment of silence–he’s scouting to make sure the threat has truly left, so that you may relax in the knowledge that you are safe and secure once again–before he looks at you with a huge grin, clearly waiting for praise and affection. Wow, you were so amazing, Chiaki! My RYUSEI Red, my brave hero~ Once you say those magic words, he melts like ice-cream in the hot sun, a sappy look on his face.

Anything for his beautiful Y/N, of course!

Adonis is the kind of boyfriend that comes the minute you call.

He’s a little worried and concerned at first, because of how panicked you seemed over the phone. Your voice wavers at awkward moments, caught between a scream and a whimper. Adonis, please, come quick, I’m scared, I’m really scared.

When he shows up, however, and finds out that the cause of your distress is simply a small bug, he can’t help but feel slightly relieved. With the way you were acting, he was expecting much, much worse. Still, this is something he knows how to fix, and for that he is glad. Seeing you terrified causes an ache in his chest, and it is not something he would like to experience anytime soon. Adonis picks it up and deposits it outside, as easy as pie. When he returns, you tackle him in a hug and he runs a soothing hand down your back as you babble on about how terrifyingly huge the bug was and how close it was to you.

(In reality, it was rather small and barely anywhere near you, but if it makes you feel better, Adonis doesn’t mind playing along with this little white lie, patiently comforting you all the while.)

When you call Nagisa, he’s confused at first.

Of course, Nagisa would never say no to spending more time with you, yet you sounded strangely choked up over the phone, Nagisa, can you come over here, quick, I need you right now. He enters your dorm, surprised to find you cowering in the corner.

When you point out the perpetrator, he can’t help but smile at your antics. It’s an easy task for him to simply remove the bug from the premises with his bare hands, but you look at him with incredibly wide eyes when you watch him and he can’t help but bask in your attention. It’s always nice to have you look at him.

He returns to a hug and a tearful recount of how you were so scared. He soothes you, calmly patting your back as you ramble on and on. You go on to explain how you called because you always feel better when he’s around, and his heart bursts. You inform him that this may become a regular occurrence, and he smiles at you.

He’s not entirely sure what use he would be, yet it warms his heart to think that you would trust him with matters such as these.

When Ibara first hears your call, filled with barely concealed panic, he won’t deny the worry that surges in his stomach. Ibara, please, come quick, I… Oh, god, I can’t…I’m scared, Ibara. It only intensifies when your call is cut off with an abrupt scream of pure terror.

For a moment, he’s terrified that his worst fears have come true and you’ve been caught in the crossfire of one too many plots gone wrong. He spares not a single second, abandoning everything and anything from meetings to paperwork to go check up on you. Of course, when he finds out that all your drama was due to a simple bug, you can expect him to be the slightest bit annoyed.

There’s not a moment of hesitation as he squashes it, all the while looking at you with an unimpressed expression, as if to say, really? That’s what you were terrified of? Yet when he notices your tears, he is quick to calm you down, gently holding your hands to ground you as speaks rationally and logically to talk you out of the spiral you may have found yourself falling into.

My saviour, you proclaim him to be, and Ibara won’t lie to say that makes him feel the tiniest amount of pleasure when you say those words.
