Weekly news

The first dev meeting of the year has come and gone, and it was a rather large one to make up for skipping December. While the meeting focused a lot on the development of osu!lazer, it also gave a lot of focus to the community side of things covering a few things like modding v2 testing, more discussions regarding featured artists and even some talk about expanding the use of the osulive twitch channel. Following on from that, we have 9 maps ready to go for live modding v2 testing. The maps included span across all game modes giving everyone a chance to test the system. So if you’re looking to see where the future of modding is going, now’s as good of a time as any to head on over and give the system a whirl.

HappyStick has decided to create a new style of tournament, the HappyStick Seasonal Tour. Hosting brackets for players of nearly every skill level, this series is something that most will be able to try their best in. Each year there will be 3 tournaments for each season excluding Winter, as it will be skipped to avoid conflicting with the OWC. The registrations for the Spring Tour recently opened and already has over 900 people who signed up! The schedule and mappool will be released on the 20th with the group stage starting on the 25th. To learn more about both the Spring Tour, and the tournament structure as a whole, head over to the google docs page and have a read.

There’s always been a lot of osu!standard tournaments running, but other game modes need some love as well. The osu!catch AxS tournament (hosted by Wesley) has just recently finished with itsnotCWCteam claiming first place after a spectacular match against 0 Consistency that went all the way to a tiebreaker! If you have the time, you should make sure to watch the full VOD.

The Community Mentorship program is back up and running for the Spring rotation. The mentor application stage is all done, and now the mentee applications are open. So if you want to learn from some of the top notch modders around, now’s your chance. Just head on over to the thread and fill out the form. Mentee sign-ups end on the 19th at 00:00 UTC time, so be sure to register in time.

Scorewatch: February Week 1 (With Scorewatch Patrol)

We’ve got a double play on kradness&Reol - Remote Control (seriously, I think this map has had enough time on the scorewatch)! Rohulk managed to squeeze in a crazy 97.63% HDDT 5 miss 577pp play, becoming his No.1 Top Rank, and Cookiezi finally fixed his 1 miss choke with a staggering 98.58% HDDT FC, setting a 761pp play. Simply outstanding plays, but the latter’s score will be shown in video form here.

I just really think Cookiezi wants to be featured more. Sorry to those who expected a different player in the second segment here, but this is just not to be missed. This time, it’s on Imperial Circus Dead Decadence - Yomi yori Kikoyu, Koukoku no Tou to Honoo no Shoujo., where he pulled off a mindblowing HD 99.07% 4 miss score, grabbing 692pp. We are speechless. Even he is speechless. It’s something that felt impossible to be done yet it has been. This requires a liveplay, and an amazing one at that.

FunOrange returns with a huge play on Sleeping With Sirens - If You Can't Hang as he pulls off the first mouse HDHR FC on Bearizm’s Extreme, setting a 99.52% 591pp play, making it both his and Canada’s top play as well. This play also skyrocketed him back into the Top 50, and a really great one at that. Boasting the highest accuracy with the mod combination, his fight for No.1 Canada is still going on and strong. Check it out below.

Our fellow scorewatch member n1doking has made it here again with an astounding and weird mod combination of EZHDNCFL on DJ S3RL - T-T-Techno (feat. Jesskah), scoring 99.17% and 699pp. It’s sad that he didn’t manage to get a 700pp score, but he sure was close!

Estonians sniped jakads’ 2 month lead off the scoreboards on gmtn. vs. kozato (fw. LUZE) - squartatrice with a crazy 99.92% FC. A long 4 minute and draining song, this score will shock many professional players. Check it out.

NOTABLE MENTIONS HappyStick managed to finally pull off an FC on Imperial Circus Dead Decadence - Uta with 98.92%, scoring 594pp.

Gayzmcgee almost had a heart attack by HDHR 98.94% FCing xi - Blue Zenith on ktgster’s Extreme, grabbing 618pp.

Cookiezi took determination to the next level and set an amazing HDHR 99.88% FC on goreshit - burn this moment into the retina of my eye, gaining 693pp.

osu!mania 7K World Cup: And then there were 2

The Finals Week 1 opened with an exciting match between the United States and Indonesia, both teams off to a strong start after winning on their own first picks. It wasn’t long before Indonesia took an early lead after taking the break point on Dreamin’ attraction. The United States did their best to catch up, even taking a few risks like picking Demons. In the end, Indonesia proved simply too strong for the United States soaring ahead to a comfy 6-2 win.

Our second match was between Thailand and the Philippines. While this match appeared to be one of the closer matchups, the Philippines took control very fast. It wasn’t until Philippines’ match point where Thailand mounted a counter attack taking the score from 5-1 to 5-4 in what threatened to be the reverse sweep of the century. A tiebreaker was looking to be the only way to settle this colossal match. It came down to a 1v1 on PEACE BREAKER. S h i r o vs arcwinolivirus, with arcwinolivirus claiming the 6th and final point for the Philippines!

The third match was between Indonesia and the Philippines, who had both won impressive matches to get so far in the tournament already. Only one would get the chance to go up against China and guarantee themselves a top 3 finish. This match unfortunately was a lot more one sided than previous matches with Indonesia stealing the show with a dominating 6-0 win, despite the Philippines’ impressive performance versus Thailand earlier in the series.

Our last match of the weekend rolled around the great decider for the bronze and who would get to face South Korea was between Indonesia and China - our top and high seeded teams for Group C respectively. In fact, it was originally one the first matches of the tournament. With the group stage match results going China’s way 5-1, it wasn’t looking good for Indonesia, with history ultimately choosing to repeat itself once more. China continued to demonstrate their dominating streak, and moved on to face South Korea in the Grand Finals after a clean 6-0 win.

Following on from osu!mania World Cup news, the osu!taiko World Cup 2017 registrations have opened!. There are a few changes this year, most notable being the new Score V2 system. So if you’re looking to get in on this years osu!taiko action, now’s your chance to sign up. Registrations last until February the 19th so make sure you’ve signed up by then. If you aren’t looking to play, but rather just looking forward to the action, the live drawings will take place on the 5th of March. SUV modely jsou aktuálně nejpopulárnějšími vozy na automobilovém trhu a Opel chce tyto vzrušující vozy udělat ještě dostupnějšími. Proto SUV modely musí být efektivnější, než doposud – a právě proto studie Opel GT X Experimental využívá velmi lehkou architekturu, má kompaktní rozměry a jezdí na 17-palcových kolech, která však díky svému unikátnímu designu vypadají mnohem větší, přičemž nesnižují jízdní komfort.

Jako potvrzení závazku, že v horizontu roku 2024 bude Ope nabízet elektrifikovanou verzi v každé své modelové řadě, má GT X Experimental plně elektrický pohon. Zdrojem energie je kompaktní Li-Ion baterie nové generace, která umožňuje bezkontaktní indukční nabíjení. Studie GT X Experimental je připravena pro autonomní řízení tzv. Level 3 – tedy řidič musí být vždy připraven reagovat na výzvu systému a aktivně zasáhnout do řízení.

Mark Adams, šéfdesigner automobilky Opel, se svým týmem vyvinul celou filozofii specificky německého designu, který kombinuje stylovou čistotu s emocionální výrazností. Při vývoji studie GT X Experimental byla každá běžná funkce a odpovídající konstrukční prvek automobilu kriticky přehodnocen – tak, aby odstraněním všech nadbytečných designových prvků bylo dosaženo extrémně čistého stylingu. Opel tento postup označuje za „vizuální detoxikaci”.

Karoserie studie Opel GT X Experimental má výrazné proporce harmonicky propojené s nádherně strukturovanými splývajícími plochami. Siluetu karoserie akcentuje zřetelná grafická identita, oddělující spodní a horní část. Spodní část je lakovaná do světle šedé barvy, horní část včetně kapoty, skel kabiny a střechy má tmavě modrou až černou barvu Night Blue. Jednotlivé barvy odděluje výrazný pás typicky žlutého laku Opel, který se táhne po celé délce vozu a vizuálně zvýrazňuje dynamiku konceptu. Toto barevné schéma revitalizuje tradiční barevnou kombinaci značky Opel: Šedá/černá/žlutá.

Posádka konceptu GT X Experimental má pohodlný přístup do interiéru díky čtveřici bočních dveří bez středových sloupků, které se vyklápějí v širokém úhlu 90 stupňů, přičemž zadní dveře mají závěsy vzadu. Panoramatické čelní sklo plynule přechází do střešního okna, které se táhne až nad zadní sedadla.

Designéři Opel na absolutní minimum zredukovali také tradiční spáry mezi karosářskými panely. Horní spáru bočních dveří zakrývá žlutý akcentní pás probíhající touto oblastí pod střechou, zadní spára zadních bočních dveří je společná se vzhůru výklopným víkem zavazadlového prostoru. Dveře nemají konvenční kliky ani vnější zpětná zrcátka – zrcátka jsou nahrazena výsuvnými miniaturními kamerami, integrovanými do žlutého dělicího pásu na bocích po přední kapotou.

Vizuální energii studii GT X Experimental dodávají netradiční detaily, jako např. vygravírované trojúhelníky v prazích pod dveřmi na straně řidiče. Jeden z nich obsahuje malý šestiúhelníkový LCD displej, který indikuje úroveň nabití pohonné baterie.

Díky robustním gumovým krytům, které přesahují přes vlastní disky, vypadají sedmnáctipalcová kola s tmavomodrými pneumatikami větší, než jsou ve skutečnosti. Žluté segmenty na ráfcích mají stejnou barvu jako akcentní pás na boku karoserie, ve středu disků doslova září loga automobilky Opel, přičemž tato loga se neotáčejí s koly, ale jsou pevně fixována. Pro zvýraznění SUV charakteru vozu dostaly spodní části karoserie ochranné plastové obklady.

„Opel GT X Experimental zhmotňuje ducha našich základných hodnot. Je to “dostupná” studie, se kterou se lidé snadno identifikují. Přirozeně kombinuje čistý a výrazný styling s progresivními technologiemi. Tento vůz zřetelně avizuje vzrušující budoucnost značky Opel,“ říká Mark Adams.

Opel Compass a Opel Vizor vytvářejí novou vizuální identitu budoucích Opelů

Studie GT X Experimental poprvé prezentuje také nový styling přední a zadní části budoucích modelů značky Opel. Tzv. „Opel Compass“ organizuje designové prvky kolem výrazné horizontální a vertikální osy, které se protínají v blesku loga automobilky. Legendární logo značky je nyní ústředním bodem více, než kdy dříve. Podélný středový prolis v přední kapotě reprezentuje vertikální osu, která je opticky prodloužena až pod logo Opel. Horizontální osu symbolizují denní světla v typickém profilu křídla.

Také zadní část konceptu evokuje konfiguraci „tváře“ vozu a prvky „Opel Compass“ s logem uprostřed, podélnými koncovými světly v profilu křídel a s vertikální linií procházející středem karoserie od ploutvičky střešní antény přes zadní čelo až po zvýrazněnou hranu v zadním nárazníku.

V zájmu docílení co nejčistšího designu vytvořili stylisté automobilky Opel i novou „tvář“ vozu, která vyjadřuje průkopnického ducha značky – „Opel Vizor“. Jde o celistvý modul, který pod tmavě tónovaným plexisklem rámuje všechny hi-tech prvky, jako jsou logo blesku Opel z LED diod (ty svojí měnící se barvou signalizují provozní stav vozu), LED Matrix světlomety, denní světla v profilu křídla i kamery a senzory asistenčních systémů a funkcí pro autonomní jízdu. Elegantní modul Opel Vizor“ se táhne po celém předním čele vozu bezprostředně pod spodní hranou přední kapoty. „Opel Vizor“ bude typickým designovým prvkem všech budoucích modelů Opel po roce 2020.

Interiér „Pure Panel“: Vizuální a digitální detoxikace pro oázu relaxu

Také vzdušný interiér studie Opel GT X Experimental je koncipovaný podle stejných principů jako exteriér a reprezentuje tedy podobný „vizuální detox“. Panoramatické čelní okno, které tvoří jediný kus s prosklenou střechou, a nedělená okna ve dveřích zvýrazňují stylovou jednoduchost kabiny, která však ukrývá řadu vyspělých inovací. Dominantním prvkem interiéru je přístrojový panel, integrovaný do modulu „Pure Panel“. Jediná široká obrazovka dokazuje, že tradiční plejáda displejů, tlačítek a ovladačů, jak je známe ze současných vozů, bude v blízké budoucnosti zbytečná. Pure Panel umožňuje řidiči přístup k nejmodernějším technologiím a poskytuje mu i všechny důležité informace.

Čistotu designu interiéru dokumentuje promyšlené umístění mřížek ventilace – ty se ukrývají za obrazovkami, takže nenarušují čisté povrchy kabiny. Pure Panel dokládá, jak Opel a jeho technologie dokážou zjednodušovat zákazníkům život. Dvě obrazovky u levého a pravého okraje přístrojového panelu nahrazují vnější zpětná zrcátka. Displeje přenášejí obraz z malých výsuvných kamer. Také tvar volantu, jehož středová část aplikuje filozofii „Opel Vizor“, byl výrazně zjednodušený.

V čistém „hi-tech“ stylu je vyvedený celý interiér. Například čtyři samostatná sedadla se zdánlivě vznášejí v prostoru, pod opěrkami hlav mají odnímatelné reproduktory, které lze využít i mimo vůz. Téma trojúhelníku se zkosenými hroty se opakuje i na opěradlech sedadel a pedálech plynu a brzdy. 

Studie už více než 50 let naznačují budoucnost značky Opel

Název „GT X Experimental“ je reminiscencí průkopnické studie Experimental GT automobilky Opel z roku 1965 – dostupného kupé, které bylo historicky vůbec první studií evropského výrobce automobilů. Dodatek v názvu „X“ dokumentuje záměr Opelu rozšiřovat svoji nabídku SUV modelů: V roce 2021 má být 40 procent všech prodaných automobilů značky Opel typu SUV.

Opel už dlouhá desetiletí využívá koncepční studie k naznačení svého dalšího směřování. Mnoho studií se sice nikdy nedostalo do sériové výroby, všechny ale značce pomáhaly nastavovat mantinely pro připravované modely. Z tohoto pohledu tři (zatím) poslední studie automobilky Opel jasně dokumentují konzistenci jejího vývoje: Studie Monza Concept z roku 2013 reflektuje úsilí Opel o vyšší efektivitu (lehká konstrukce, prostorově úsporné uspořádání komponentů, moderní pohony), studie GT Concept z roku 2016 posunula efektivitu na novou úroveň svým jednoduchým a čistým stylingem a ještě dále tyto atributy posouvá právě představená studie GT X Experimental.

New Play Style in the Good Old Way

If you've tried VR (Vive, Oculus Rift) I'm almost 100% you've been blown away. It's an experience. Despite that, for VR to mesh with traditional gaming1, it needs to support and enhance the _Old Ways.

Us who like traditional video games,2 expect our hardware to support them well. We hope that when something new is created, the new expands on the old, allowing us to still play ever more complex and intense versions of the old.

The reality is that when a console like the Wii is created, the new paradigm it heralds, is conjured from a business decision ("stand apart from Sony") and enables new ways, but they aren't necessarily better than the old: An IR controller plus an analog stick was better for Pikmin than dual analog, but resulted in some rather gimmicky, though not broken controls for Skyward Sword.

The Nintendo DS was a place where the Old Ways clashed with new play style options. The Nintendo DS had all the buttons it need, but also a touch screen. The games played in the Old Way were some of the best we've seen of the kind. Slowly though, some new experiences that showed signs of still adhearing to the values of the old appeared. Osu Tatakae Ouendan and Soul Bubbles. The two Zelda games. Yet the two best games on the Nintendo DS, GTA: Chinatown Wars and Clash of Heroes are controls-wise really conservative (though Clash is clever as fuck).

Can experiences like the Wii and the Nintendo DS, point us in a direction for VR to more quickly better support the Old Ways, so that VR will enhance and improve the Old Ways? First-Person Shooters, strategy games, third-person action-adventure games. Hack 'n Slash experiences, turn-based Japanese Role Playing Games and reaction intensive action games.

From the get-go, some of the mechanics don't work super well or aren't gonna be really different with a big pair of goggles on the head. VR changes the immersiveness, so we need to think about how bigger immersion can improve what we like about those previous genre. It seems obvious that it would be even more fantastic to experience Skyrim from a more real perspective, but once we try to move around, the immersion is broken, as the controls (analog sticks on a controller) don't match the real-ness of the visual experience.

The question becomes: Which problem do we bang our heads against?

"How to immersively control a game like Skyrim or Diablo III (different games, same dilemma) in VR."

or

"How to make VR games that work within the confines of VR, yet are still built around the traits of traditional games."

The Wii showed us that the first problem takes a lot of research until we get games that still aren't quite as well controlled as the old games (Skyward Sword).

The Nintendo DS showed us that it takes a lot of research until we get games that both tradition yet completely new.

And both consoles showed us that very few companies are actually willing to put in the effort to bring forth this (r)evolution.

Trauma Center on the Wii and Pikmin 3 on the Wii U (With the stylus-based controls) show that, respectively, the second problem is worth the wait, and the first problem is worth the wait.

For many people, video games are the work-demanding, virtuosity enabling baroque adventures that they've been since the 80's. ↩︎

Weekly News Score Watch

There are a lot of updates on multiple development fronts this week, but let's start off with progress on osu!lazer. For those of you who are new to the sharper-than-cutting-edge side of development, osu!lazer represents the hope and future of our beloved game. The completely open source overhaul of everything from the ground up has been tirelessly worked on by both members of the community and mainstay developers from the team.

Chat tabs are now more interactable! One major improvement over the old chat tabs is the ability to resize the tabs as you see fit.

Timelines now provide more quantifiable information! You’ll now see numerical progress and play time information along with the new density graphs.

Information dialogues now narrate every change you make to the game via hotkeys! This was made possible by a new container type that previously did not exist in the osu! client called “On-screen Displays”.

Finally, more options are implemented and they are now searchable! Looks familiar? The new options menu is a rather comparatively recent feature in our old client, so it's no surprise much of the old UX has been retained.

We have merged our domains for both the new and old version of the website! This means that all pages on the new site will now point to the correct live addresses as they will be when we phase out the old, and older pages will be slowly taken offline as their replacements become ready over time. For the time being, new.ppy.sh will still direct you to the new front page under the primary domain.

The mediawiki based osu!wiki will become read-only very soon! If you still want to contribute to the initiative to document osu! to every detail, you’re going to have to catch on to the new markdown based system on github.

The QAT posted a review of the latest round of non-standard BNs, giving us a glimpse at how we admit new members! The breakdowns of the BN tests are likely to be useful and interesting for anyone who are looking to join the group in the future, so be sure to read up if you don’t want to fall behind!

Piggey continues to shoot up the rankings by setting a crazy 99.14% HDNC FC on RADWIMPS - Zen Zen Zense (movie ver.) on Taki’s difficulty, earning an outstanding 616pp and the No. 1 spot (now No. 2 as Rafis sniped it). So this is how chipmunks would sing this song.

Where did my eyes go? Mafham went hysterical and set an unbelievable HD SS on Scognito - Spelunker on the rainbow seizures difficulty. You’d be joking if you said you knew what was going on while watching this.

[224]Hyperw7 continues to widen his lead in the osu!catch rankings with a solid 99.61% HR FC on DJ Totoriott - Chronoxia, giving him 571pp. Those are some small fruits… er… small squares?

jakads broke the 30,000pp barrier by pulling off a stunning 95.00% DT A rank play on LeaF - Doppelganger on his own difficulty to earn 2402pp. Many congratulations to jakads for being the first person to reach such an impressive milestone.

Mentee applications for both osu!standard and osu!catch have started and we’re primed to enter a new cycle! For those of you who are desperately (like me) trying to up their game in the mapping community, what better opportunity is there than this? While mods are dime a dozen, it’s not an exaggeration to say getting sincere opinions and critiques is a seldom received gift. If you are sincere in your pursuit of a better beatmap, head on over and apply today!

The osu!lazer development branch saw the introduction of the new expandable in-game mod overlay! It might be quicker to just show you what I mean, but if you haven’t yet, you should definitely follow the osu!dev blog for further updates on the new version of our game!

The osu!SOFT (Springtime osu!mania (4K) FFA Tournament) has reached a decisive conclusion! The grand finals proved to be a battle between two absolute giants in terms of ability. With the format being a survival of the fittest deathmatch, how can you be surprised? Cobo-, coming from the winners bracket, faced off against cheetose from the lower bracket. After a bracket reset and some incredible performances from both players, cheetose would go and take the top spot in the tournament. Congratulations!

For the first time in a while, it might be worthwhile to give ourselves a refresher with so many front page news this week!

Starting from the top, osu!catch World Cup registration has begun! See? I told you you guys didn’t have to wait long! If you’re interested in representing your country and are at least rank #5000 in the mode, head on over to see if you qualify and compete for fruit catching glory! That said, we’ll be starting our regular coverage of the tournament as well, so look no further for regular updates on the status of our premier tournaments.

Kuba Oms has joined the ranks of our featured artists! It’s been a long time coming, but the prolific Canadian artist will finally have his music available for mappers to use for creative output. Ever since My Love became the hot topic with MBC #4, the winning entry has been a staple within the osu! client. His music has been the gatekeeper for our game for a very long time, and now we’ll finally be able to see more of them throughout our adventure!

osu! will be making an appearance at Anime Expo 2017! Join us between July 1st and July 4th at the Los Angeles Convention Center and hang out with the crew that makes osu! happen behind the scenes. We’ll be hosting a variety of events on-site, including but not limited to tournaments and (hopefully) panels!

For the first time ever, osu!taiko will have its very own edition of the aspire contest! The excitement is building up as we wait to find out what kind of crazy new ways to break the game mode will emerge. For those who wish to participate, you have a full month (+1 day for timezone reasons) to get your submissions in.

The osu!speedrunning community has taken off with some fierce first week competition!Our very own MillhioreF currently holds the record for the fastest to 10 full combos. When asked about what he had to say to people going after his record, he had this to say. While this may seem bizarre for a lot of us, it’s always cool to see people find their own enjoyment in the spirit of how rhythm games should be.

The channel “Click The Circles” uploads a lot of “progression” videos showcasing the change of player ability over time. This week, we can get a glimpse of how well top players did on two classic challenge maps: Chipscape and Atama no Taisou. With these videos being only the beginning as a wealth of comparison based and ranking content, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to check out more of their videos!

Cookiezi continues to shoot for the 14,000pp barrier as he made his mark on Chitose Sara - Merry Merry Go Round with a crazy 99.22% HDDT FC to claim 706pp. With this score, he now has ten 700pp+ top plays. Check it out!

People wondered if filsdelama would follow up Vaxei’s HDHRDT FC on ClariS - Hitorigoto -TV MIX- and snipe the bacon down. Well, you no longer have to wonder, as he did it within a week, achieving a staggering 99.41% HDHRDT FC and grabbed his No. 1 Top Rank as well, sitting at 726pp.

How on EARTH are you supposed to read this? _Rise pulled off the first ever HDHR FC on Camellia - Exit This Earth's Atomosphere, scoring 527pp with his 99.10% score. Incredible.

“We await the first FC on the SV difficulty of Camellia - Shun no Shifudo o Ikashita Kare Fumi Paeria”, that was what I wrote back in osu!weekly #84, but it seems like the dream has came true, all thanks to jakads who pulled off an outstanding 99.96% SD FC on the SV difficulty. This is one mania score you have got to watch!

inteliser stole another SS from a 5* map as he obliterated ZOGRAPHOS (Yu_Asahina+Yamajet) - Verse IV with a 162:1752 SS, beating out the likes of jhlee0133, jakads and Cobo-. This is a watch for the mania players!

ExGon took 74 hours to complete MillhioreF - Waltz o' the Irish. Yes. 74 hours. He streamed this amazing slow slider score on twitch to complete an amazing 1 note SS score.

DanyL and Vaxei blew Cookiezi’s score into a pile of dust as they took TrySail - High Free Spirits -TV.Ver- (Skystar’s Extra) and smashed it with 96.79% and 98.82% HDDT FCs, giving them 692pp and 746pp respectively.

Musty followed in Vaxei’s footsteps and, within 2 weeks, secured a breathtaking 98.86% HR FC on DragonForce - Symphony of the Night to earn himself 620pp.

free mutual lost his sanity and went for an amazing 99.77% FC on BABYMETAL - Road of Resistance to earn himself 633pp and sniping Rafis off the throne after more than a year. It seems that he is not quite done with this map yet, so keep your eyes peeled for the coming months!

The first stage of Aspire 2017 finally concluded, and a winner was declared. Dominating the conversation surrounding the contest from the start, ProfessionalBox (aka Somber Ibis) won explosively with top scores from all of the Honorable Mentions judges, as well as a massive, dominating lead in the overall public voting. MinG3012 (as Versatile Mallard) and Emilia (as Tranquil Chipmunk) trailed further behind, just barely scraping past Sonnyc (as Forlorn Thrasher) to nab an Honorable Mention. After holding our first ever music remix contest (featuring the main osu! theme, circles) last year, MBC#15 went ahead and tasked mappers with the trial of creating a fully-fledged set around BilliumMoto’s’s titular HDHR. The results are finally out, and RyoKazuka (as Wary Skunk) snagged victory with a respectable 37.5/50 score. He walks away crowned as one of osu!’s Elite Mappers, and if recent rumours are to be believed, the last person to ever win an Elite title off a single MBC alone. It seems like Ephemeral has some big plans for mapping contests this year. Firstly, during the results for the Monthly beatmapping contest results, Ephemeral talked about a new Elite Mapper ranking system that will replace the current reward for those contests. He also let it slip that there will be another three Aspire contests this year, but this time it will be for osu!taiko - and what’s more, it’ll be happening towards the end of this month!

The Spring Fan Art Contest is nearing its end, with only 4 days left for people to submit their spring-themed works for a shot at the main-menu! 4 days isn’t much, but if you’re slow on the uptake and haven’t heard about the contest yet, you’ve still got a chance at getting an entry in on time!

February might be the month of love, but the dawn of April saw a whopping 120+ new maps make their way into the Loved category. More love than your body has room for.

We’ve also hit a brand new milestone reaching 6 billion ranked plays! A true testament to the community’s growth over the years, this not-at-all-small milestone represents a colossal amount of time spent playing osu!. Assuming an average beatmap duration of 150s, that’s over 900 BILLION seconds spent playing osu!, or 15bil minutes, or 250mil hours, which is nearly 29000~ collective years. Purely of osu!. Astonishing. 10 million users isn’t far away, either!

Around the community

Last week, we got some insight by pishifat about how to pick the right song to map, but then what? You now have your very own map, but how do you get it noticed? How do you get people to take the time to look at your map and provide feedback. Well, pishifat’s newest video covers different ways to get your map noticed and then looks at the pros and cons of each method.

A lot of songs have gained a certain level of fame in osu!. To commemorate some of these songs, SakiZ released a 10 minute video highlighting some of the more famous songs from past to present. While some of these songs are still new and fresh such as Road of Resistance and Defenders, SakiZ pays respect to some of the older classics such as Gold Dust and Rubik’s Cube. Although I can’t help be a little sad at the lack of Don’t Say “Lazy”.. Also if you find yourself unable to check out the YouTube video, you can check it out here instead.

Raveille has started up a new beatmap project for this compendium of favorites looking to try create a massive multimode mapset. The beatmap project will be a first come first server with the aim to have anywhere between 4-12 mappers taking part per gamemode. So if you’d like to take a crack at mapping any of these infamous songs, now might just be as good a time as any.

Scorewatch: April Week 1 (With Scorewatch Patrol)

Once upon a time, long long ago, 800pp couldn’t have even been thought of. Now, one man stands with 2 such scores in his hands. Yes, you heard it right, Cookiezi has set the 2nd 800pp osu!std play and the highest osu!std play of all time, with a 99.55% HDDT FC on kradness&Reol - Remote Control to earn himself 817pp.

Guess what, another boy decided to follow the footsteps! Vaxei took to the skies to steal the first spot on kradness&Reol - Remote Control with a 99.49% HDDT FC to give him 813pp. What a week. What a day it was.

Cookiezi has been sniped! Sound the trumpets! dabovo strolled his way to steal the No. 1 spot on xi - Blue Zenith with a 98.24% HD FC to give him 541pp. Who is this guy, you may ask? Well, he has a couple of Dragonforce HD FCs as well. Check it out!

Heard of Flask? Well, the captain of Taiwan OWC 2016 pulled off a stunning beatMARIO - Night of Knights 99.28% HDHR FC (same as CXu), earning 559pp (same as CXu exactly!). This isn’t about CXu today, no, this score marks Flask’s 2nd 500pp score, and his 2nd this month! A memorable one at that!

_yu68 didn’t make a fool out of himself on April Fools as he pulled off an amazing 99.82% DT FC on Camellia - Exit This Earth's Atomosphere to earn himself 704pp. He’d be glad the score actually submitted.

Pope Gadget pulled off a fascinating 99.58% 4 miss play on sun3 - Morgenglut 2012, a very fast and dense LN oriented map. This is really something amazing coming from one of the best European players in osu!mania. Give it a watch!

Not content with dab sliders alone, Emilia soared into the top 20 like a bullet as he pulled off a 98.05% HDDT FC on Kanae Asaba - Endless Starlight ~Inochi no Kirameki~ (OP ver.) to earn himself 639pp.

Vaxei gladly took the No. 2 spot on Ito Kanako - Skyclad no Kansokusha with a casual 99.34% HDDT FC, giving him 673pp.

SillyFangirl got the co-co-co-co-combo breaker breaking as he broke his way through a 94.70% DT score on Blitz Lunar - Mathsma Attack mapped by Shoegazer.

jakads stole the No. 1 spot in osu!mania by performing an amazing 94.66% DT play on xi - Ascension to Heaven to earn 2165pp.

TWC 2017 Week 4 Summary: Onwards toward Finals glory

The Semi Finals saw 12 amazing teams take up arms with a ticket to the finals on the line. While some of the teams started to really struggle with the ever increasing difficulty of each new mappool, other teams breezed right through it. If you missed any of the action, you can always watch the VOD’s here, or settle of the brief recap below. The weekend matches were split up over 2 days, with 4 matches each day. Our 4 matches for Saturday were all lower bracket encounters starting off with a very familiar match, France vs South Korea. Since their encounter in group stage, both teams have performed exceptionally well throughout the tournament. While France did manage to take an early point on CYBER Sparks by a very close 16k points, it was all downhill from there, as South Korea proved too strong. It was not until the very end of the match did France manage to take another point on to luv me i *** for you, but by then it was far too late. With a 6-3 victory, South Korea was only one step away from their seat at the finals, but who would be their opponent, Poland or Hong Kong?

It was Hong Kong. After the amazing comeback Poland pulled off against Malaysia, people were eager to see if Poland could create another miracle this weekend. Despite facing roster issues, Hong Kong gave Poland no mercy and swept them 6-0. With this win, they would be in direct competition against South Korea for the same seat in Finals.

The next 2 matches were almost a mirror image of the previous 2. We saw Chile take an impressive 6-3 win over Australia in one of the closer matches of the weekend followed closely by Spain vs Germany which ended in a very similar manner to the Hong Kong vs Poland match. With this, we were down to 4 Lower bracket teams, with only 2 moving on to the Finals. South Korea vs Hong Kong and Chile vs Germany.

On Sunday, we saw some match ups that held a lot of promise. Initially, we had Canada go up against the team to beat, Japan.We all know by this point that Japan is an incredibly strong team, who had yet to concede a single point throughout the tournament. As Canada stepped up to the plate to try their luck, we were all hoping that they could be the team to do it, but alas it was not meant to be. While some of the results were very close, even Canada was unable to lay a finger on Japan. In the other winner’s bracket match, facing off against Japan next week and guaranteeing them a top 3 finish would either be Taiwan or the United States. While the match looked good on pen and paper, Taiwan came out on top taking a comfy 6-2, sending the United States to the loser’s bracket.

Finishing off the week, we then had the remainder of the two loser’s bracket matches. The eyes of many moved on to what had the potential to be an extremely close match, Hong Kong vs South Korea.However that fairytale match quickly turned its head as Hong Kong stormed ahead to an early lead taking decisive wins on maps such as Veritas and Caliburne. On the other end of the loser’s bracket, despite putting up a valiant effort against the Germans, all Chile could manage to do was take a single point on Freja, conceding the match 6-1. Germany will move on to the finals where, like the other 3 countries, will fight their way to the top of the loser’s bracket next week.

Next week in Finals Week 1, we begin with Hong Kong facing off against the United States. The match is scheduled to take place on Saturday 8th April, 02:00 UTC (Friday evening for viewers in the US). There will be a total of 6 intense matches to come, so be sure to drop by the osu!live twitch channel this weekend as it may well be the most exciting one yet!

Granted, you could have already figured this out by yourself, but new.ppy.sh has a brand new look! For those of you who are severely behind on the times, the work in progress of our new net platform is available for public testing. With the site inching steadily towards a release, there’s not much time left to get your own name on a piece of osu! contribution history! If you have the technical know-how, you can head on over to the repository where you can contribute to the development of both the osu-web and the lazer projects.

The osu!weekly is currently trying to get more tournaments into our wiki! If you are currently approved for a badge already from our lovely staff, send us an e-mail at [email protected] to find out how you can participate in our community promotion program.

While we wait for the new platform to take shape, Loctav has sounded the call to arms for mappers to start digging away at our featured artists! That said, if you have a map of a song that is taken directly from our featured artist listing, drop your map in the thread and we’ll see where we can take it together.

It seems that Ephemeral has hit a rather stiff hitch in his work, but is now nearing a complete recovery! This means that popular events that I know you all have been direly needing news of will finally see the light of day sometime soon. Hopefully, we’ll also finally have the new scheduled dev meeting for everyone to gloss over as well!

Our top spot regular pishifat continues to deliver, this week giving us a little bit of his take on how we choose songs to be mapped! This topic should be no stranger to a lot of those who already are well and beyond the gates of the ranked category. For those of us who are not yet so experienced, perhaps now is a good time to do yourself a favor and watch some of the videos that this man puts out. While I can’t say watching a lot of videos in one go is very healthy, you’ll find yourself well on your way to becoming a mapping champion a lot faster here!

The skins! channel seems to be a collaborative effort between different members (mostly CBullet) of the community to review and promote skins from around the community. The channel looks to provide both a way to give mappers genuine feedback for their work, as well as score and categorize them so players would know what to expect when opening them up. This week, they have graced us with not one, but two new reviews! The first of our dynamic duo is an interestingly crusty looking skin called UJSv6, and the latter is a skin featuring a fantastic back animation aptly titled steampowered.

Scorewatch: March week 4 (With Scorewatch Patrol)

Angelsim took accuracy to the next league as he managed to pull off a stunning 99.74% FC on LeaF - Paraclete, gaining 486pp. This play becomes the only play on the leaderboards to have a single digit 100 count. Almost flawless.

Care to play a 22 minute 7* map? Sure, said ThePooN, who went on to break the 1 billion score barrier and set a 6 miss 99.75% score on Renard - Because Maybe! pt. 2 that gave him 529pp. Sit down, relax, and listen to some Renard with some insane skill from this French player.

WubWoofWolf makes the SS rank feel like a joke to him as he pulled that out of Kuroneko Dungeon - Ryoushi no Umi no Lindwurm on yf & Crystal’s Extra with HDHR to gain 312pp. No one in the leaderboards are remotely close to him. See this flawless play for yourself!

_Asriel broke loose as he pulled off an amazing 96.62% HDDT FC on BOSSFIGHT - Dr. Wily's Castle: Stage 1 to earn himself 611pp. No one has yet to even come close to this crazy score on the leaderboards. See it for yourself!

NOTABLE MENTIONS:

Xilver took Linked Horizon - Jiyuu no Tsubasa (TV Size) to a whole new challenge by slapping on HDDT and getting only 1 sliderbreak, setting a 97.54% 473pp play.

Cookiezi took a trip down memory lane as he mashed his way and finally pulled off a mindblowing HDDT 95.2% FC on Demetori - Emotional Skyscraper ~ World's End, giving him 450pp.

free mutual absolutely destroyed nano - Omoide Kakera by pulling off a “never been done before” 97.95% HR FC, giving him 561pp (with 83 UR).

jakads pulled off an impressive 97.92% S rank score on xi - PEACE BREAKER on the 1.2x difficulty, only getting 38 misses throughout.

TWC 2017 Week 3 Summary: Quarter Finals - with magnomizer

This week in Quarter Finals, we see yet another 8 spectacular matches between the 16 countries that still remain in the tournament. Don’t worry if you’ve missed out though, as you can always watch the VODs here, or settle for a brief recap below:

Starting off with the winner’s bracket, all matches were fairly one sided as the winning team ploughed through the opposition with a confident 5-1 or 5-0 victory, knocking Australia, Germany, Hong Kong and South Korea to the loser’s bracket. Over on the loser’s bracket, we had 2 fairly close matches on Saturday, in the form of Spain vs UK and Chile vs Brazil. While both matches started off evenly, both Spain and Chile pulled through and won with 5-2.

However, the highlight of the weekend was certainly the match between Malaysia and Poland. Despite Malaysia snatching an early lead of 4-1, Poland was able to turn the tide of the battle by decisively picking technical maps. Slowly but surely, it wore down the opposing team and Poland was able to force a tiebreaker. Despite a valiant effort from both teams, only CreepyDuck from Poland was able to pass the map, resulting in the first ever 5-way fail in TWC history. This just goes to show how frighteningly difficult the mappool is, and how it will continue to rise in difficulty in the remaining weeks.

Lastly, we must say our goodbyes to the 4 countries that have been eliminated. They have all tried their hardest, but alas only the strongest will survive. TWC is certainly no walk in the park, so well done to Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia and the United Kingdom for making it this far.

Next week in Semifinals, the first match is scheduled to take place on Saturday 1st April, 10:00 UTC. There we will see France facing off against South Korea – perhaps they will be able to take revenge following their match in Group Stage?
