It had all started after the Heroics were the guests of honor at a gala put on by the mayor’s office. Marcus had taken you as his date, the two of you only a few months into your relationship. The event was white tie, and you had been very worried about what to wear; the fanciest event you had ever been to other than prom was a cocktail party. Thankfully, some of the women on the team helped you out, having been to many of these events themselves. 

You settled on a forest green ball gown and ivory satin opera gloves, both of which felt equal parts fun and intimidating to wear. But Marcus assured you you looked gorgeous and would fit right in. He himself was wearing a black dinner jacket with tails and all of the accessories that apparently made it white tie official. You didn’t really understand the nuance, but he sure looked handsome. 

The event itself was pretty good, if a little boring, mainly because Marcus kept getting pulled away for photo ops and interviews and to meet people, etc, etc. He brought you along when he could, but it wasn’t as if making small talk with local business people was very interesting. 

Towards the end of the night, there was a question of whether you would stay another 15 minutes or 45 and you immediately told Marcus to make it 15. He didn’t take much convincing luckily, just a whisper in his ear of how you liked how he looked in his suit but couldn’t wait to see what he looked like out of it. The two of you were in the first taxi. 

Thankfully, Missy was at a sleepover party with the rest of the kids and she wasn’t expected until midday the next day. 

As soon as you were in the front door and it was locked, Marcus was kissing you, eager and hot. He guided the two of you to the couch, where it was a little difficult to sit with your big dress, so he turned you around and undid the back, helping you step out of it. It had been a close call, but you and your away team managed to escape the derelict ship relatively unscathed, some cuts, some bruises, nothing a quick once over in sick bay couldn’t fix.  You had already given your report. Still, The Captain had come down to check on you and yours anyway.

“Scars Chief Y/N? Where from? Not from this mission I hope.”

“Oh these? They’re pretty old. My colony, at least at the time, they didn’t have fancy Starfleet quality medical equipment, so there was a little scarring.”

“Hm, I see, if you ever wanted, I’m sure Dr. M’Benga-“

“Are… are you saying you don’t like them, Sir?” You crossed your arms around your chest, blocking the scars beneath your pecs self-consciously.

“Oh, no no! No, that came out, wrong. I have no say in what you do with your body. *Phew* am I making it worse? It feels like I’m making it worse.”

“Sorry sir, didn’t mean to get defensive, it’s just… There are some scars we choose to keep.”

“I can understand that, although, I do have to wonder. How many of them you can take… before you don’t recognize yourself anymore?”

There was a graveness to the Captain’s reply that gave you pause, but it seemed directed inward, or at least rhetorical. You wanted to pry, but a bustling sick bay was not at all the place for it.

“Well, I think I can safely say that I couldn’t recognize myself before these two came into my life.” you gestured at your scars “If that’s any consolation. Sometimes we need to change, in order to thrive.” you ventured, cautiously.

The Captain looked at you puzzled for a long time, then his face suddenly lit up like something had just dawned on him. Something you had yet to tell him, and yet for him to realize.

“Oh! I think I understand.” Pike nodded thoughtfully.

“Does that, bother you Chris? I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.” you said, lowering your voice.

You knew people had inferred the two of you were dating, Senior staff seems to have a habit of pairing off. Dating within equivalent or adjacent rank broke protocol the least. It’s one of the most overlooked rules in Starfleet. But it was still uncharted territory, and neither of you wanted to make a show of it, keep it professional, that’s what seemed best to do.

He sat down on the edge of the biobed next to you, looking as if he was trying to cover up feeling hurt. Your mind raced trying to figure out the reason.

“No, of course not.” Chris said, matching your hushed tone “Did, did I ever make you feel like you couldn’t tell me?”

“No! No, it was, that’s more on me really, I just don’t normally do relationships so I just, it didn’t occur to me I-“

“Y/N” he locked eyes with you, putting a hand on your knee.

“I get it. I really don’t mind, at all, the galaxy is a big place, we Humans tend to oversimplify it but if you wanna get technical, there’s likely almost as many genders across species as there are stars. And if I’m being honest, I’ve never really been that picky. I think what matters is the connection that we feel. How I feel about you, and how you feel about me.”

You were so relieved, not everyone was so open minded, it was probably why he had this particular command. The rush of feelings that came to you were a little overwhelming.

I find the terrifying faux politeness of Dracula's and Johnathan's relationship to be so heartbreaking not just because Dracula seems to be demanding this decorum, testing to see if Johnathan will be brave and explicitly fight against him, but because Johnathan is demanding it too. He writes to Mina in shorthand cause he doesn't dare be caught, even knowing he has so little time left to live. He can't handle the prospect of actually meeting that fate he's logically accepted, so he hopes and he prays and practically begs Dracula himself to keep up this facade. It's all he has left.

Ok but with ylfa's backstory it's just. There's a wolf who can take people's skins and mimic their voices? So there have been many ppl who have gone into the woods, been attacked by a wolf, and then what's returned has looked and sounded and hell maybe even acted like them! But a bit more monstrous. With hair on their hands, and a low snarl, and sure they sound like our dear loved one and they look like them but they're scary. They're scary, and they've changed, and shouldn't they be dead?

And maybe if they're scary they aren't our loved one - they're actually just the scary thing in disguise yes of course! Cause they would never scare us like that. They could never be transformed like that. So it's not them, so they're dead.
