The Swede and Spanish Jackie in the trailer made me think of the "Me and the bad bitch I pulled..." meme, so I decided to draw it. XD

what was the ableist joke?
(we're talking about this post and the guy who asked stede to sell him parts of the hostage before getting chased off by geraldo)
the whole character is the ableist joke, imo. altho idk if ableist is the right word for it but putting an actor with a facial deformity for a quick little "stede is a fish out of water in a gruesome and violent world" bit is... a choice they made for sure. he's only there for one scene that serves purely as quick comedy (you could cut his bit out entirely and skip straight to geraldo approaching stede, it adds nothing to the plot), so his visual deformity becomes that guy's defining character trait and also part of the comedy of that scene.
i know that scene would play out the same if they cast a different person in that role, and all the guy is doing is just delivering his lines, but when you have disabled or physically deformed actors, putting them in certain roles changes the portrayal of their disability/deformity. casting that actor changed the scene so it wasn't only, "stede is out of his depth, pirates are incredibly violent," but there was also, "and look at this guy with the weird face! he's weird and violent!"
like, if they put matthew maher (black pete) in that role, the scene wouldve read like "isn't it funny that this creepy and violent guy who wants to 'disassemble' the hostage has a lisp?" but because black pete is a recurring background character who has his own plotline and character development, and because his lisp is never commented on or made a joke of, matthew maher's lisp is never the butt of the joke.
also the actor (Dan Considine) is literally credited on imdb as "Ghoulish Man" so like, yeah, the guy's facial deformity is part of the gag here. not a great look to describe a man with a facial deformity as ghoulish

Amazing how Stede is the one who actually had a marriage to end but Ed is the one who's racked up 3 divorces (Izzy who he's still technically in the process of divorcing, Stede who left him but he threw out all Stede's stuff so that's done with, and Calico Jack because I'm choosing to interpret their brief sojourn away from the Revenge as a drunken marriage that ended when Ed left him in the dinghy).

Can we also note that there is zero "oh, haha, gay men are grossed out by/don't like women" bullshit in OFMD?
Stede is not disgusted by his wife. He tries to be a good husband and father and is terrible at it because he's a repressed gay man and also he wants badly to be understood and doesn't know how to express that. But we see him try to relate to Mary, and we see moments where they were happy (playing with their children, having dinner). At no point does Stede dislike Mary; he's just not a heterosexual man. They're friends, and are even to finally play together, at the end because they're able to understand each other, finally.
Tumblr media
And this carries on throughout. There's zero misogyny at play. The few jokes about Jim when they're revealed to not be a man are written as silly and superstitious, not misogynist, and are pretty quickly put to rest. Spanish Jackie, Archie, Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Zheng, and Auntie are all respected by Stede, Ed, and the rest of the Revenge crew and zero issue is made of their being women.
The show clearly and closely relates homophobia and misogyny. The people who are misogynist or use misogynist language - Calico Jack, Izzy, the Badmintons - are the antagonists. They're the ones who think being female or perceived as feminine is a bad thing. They use misogynist language to describe or dismiss Stede, Ed, and Lucius especially. And while Stede and Ed both have issues about their masculinity, at no point do they think that being female is a bad or shameful thing.
Tumblr media
It's yet another trope that the show skirts by not relying on cheap laughs or sexist stereotypes.

i talked a bit about this with my friend who watched ofmd but i feel like i need to say it on here too. izzy wasn’t the only disability rep on the show. i’ve seen people complain that they killed off the only disabled character and if they do realize that other characters are disabled, they say it doesn’t matter because “it wasn’t as serious as izzy” and like… that’s the whole point. that’s what makes it good. spanish jackie is easily one of the most powerful characters on the show. she has like 20 husbands. she’s universally feared and she does all this with a missing hand. and then there’s ed. i’ve seen a lot of people say that his disability is a headcanon but he literally wears a knee brace. you don’t do that for the aesthetic. being upset that izzy died because it takes away from disabled representation and then refusing to acknowledge ed’s is straight up just hypocrisy. lucius is also easily recognized by the fact that his finger is literally made out of wood. there was a whole episode surrounding its amputation. and that might not seem like a big deal but lucius is an artist. i’m also an artist. i don’t know how i’d relearn drawing if that happened to me so the fact that he works around it and finds a way to keep doing what he loves is so meaningful. he’s also in a relationship with another disabled person, pete. pete has a speech impediment and cleft lip. he’s still seen as a fun and desirable character. he’s one of the only main characters who’s married. he has his flaws, he’s a compulsive liar and says the wrong thing sometimes, but his disability is never made into one of those flaws. i understand being upset that izzy died. he was a great character who represented a lot of people, but he wasn’t the only one. you don’t get to pick and choose which characters are disabled enough for you. disabled people aren’t your tragedy. they deserve to have stories outside of that too

Shoutout to the incredible looks a lot of the background characters were sporting in the Republic of Pirates. I'm pretty sure the ones in the 7th and 9th screenshots are Spanish Jackie's trans husbands.
As a bonus, I think the woman in the first picture is also one of Jackie's husbands?
Tumblr media
That's her in the scene where Jackie waylays Stede stealing the chest of indigo. When they leave, Jackie says, "Let's go, husbands" to the whole crowd.

things i loved about ofmd s2 today's edition: SPANISH JACKIE. she's amazing. she gets what she wants, she finds love where she can, she protects herself and her household, she and swede have their own love story, and she looks damn good doing it.
secret poison training may not be my love language but you gotta admit it looks a lot more practical and nearly sweet from jackie's perspective in the twisted morality of the show. she shot one husband last season, but swede? she's sticking by him
