'Puella Magi Madoka Magica -Walpurgisnacht: Rising-' Announces Winter 2024 Debut
On Sunday, at Aniplex Online Fest 2023, Aniplex revealed a new teaser trailer for Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: -Walpurgisnacht Rising- (Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten).
The trailer revealed that the anime film, which continues the Puella Magi Madoka Magica main timeline after the events of the 2013 film Rebellion, will debut theatrically in Japan in Winter 2024.
Tumblr media
Aniplex also revealed a new key visual for the film and announced that director Yukihiro Miyamoto, who directed the original 2011 television anime series, its two film adaptation, Rebellion, and spin-off Magia Record is returning for Walpurgisnacht: Rising at SHAFT.
He is joined by the previously revealed staff, including the original creators Magica Quartet, chief director Akiyuki Simbou, writer Gen Urobuchi (Nitroplus), and character designer Aokiume. Additional returning staff includes character animation designer Junichiro Taniguchi, who served as Chief Animation Director on previous projects, parallel world designer Gekidan InuCurry (Doroinu), who created the iconic, unique looks of the Witches Labyrinths, and composer Yuki Kajiura.
Tumblr media
All of the original Japanese main voice cast from the series and Rebellion are set to reprise their roles:
Aoi Yuki as Madoka Kaname
Chiwa Saito as Homura Akemi
Kaori Mizuhashi as Mami Tomoe
Eri Kitamura as Sayaka Miki
Ai Nonaka as Kyouko Sakura
Kana Asumi as Nagisa Momoe
Emiri Kato as Kyubey
The anime was originally announced back in 2021, but in 2019 at Anime Expo, Homura's voice actress, Chiwa Saito, foreshadowed the sequel, saying that "the actual series has not ended yet" and that she was looking forward to everyone seeing Devil Homura, a reference to the ending of Rebellion, again.
Tumblr media
Puella Magi Madoka Magica aired in 2011 to critical and audience acclaim. It became a cultural phenomenon and spawned two movie adaptations, Beginnings and Eternal, the sequel film Rebellion, and multiple manga and video game spin-offs. It is credited with popularizing mixing dark, postmodern tropes with the magical girl genre.

I would like to brag about how Texas Tough I was when it came to enduring the long South Texas summer of my childhood, but the truth is that it was winter that I dreaded most. Our house was heated by a wood-burning stove in the kitchen. Overnight, the fire would die down, and by morning the house had leaked all its warmth. As a kid, my morning routine was a shiver fest: I would cast off my electric blanket, make my way to the back porch to gather firewood, sort the kindling and the tinder, and then light a fire in the stove. While I waited, I would lay my clothes on the cast iron until they were hot to the touch—sliding into them was like putting on a comforting skin. To this day, I abhor being cold. (Maybe Switzerland isn’t for me after all.)
Despite growing up in rural South Texas without air-conditioning, I don’t remember being uncomfortable in the summers, at least not in the house. The old thing was uninsulated and drafty, inviting in the sea breezes that bring thunderstorms from the Gulf to the coastal plains. After school and in the summer, I spent hours at the town library, devouring books in the delicious AC. Plus, summers just weren’t as hot in the eighties and early nineties—I know; I looked up the data. The seven hottest summers on record for DeWitt County, where I grew up, have all occurred since 1998.
It was working outdoors that made me appreciate what it means to eat by the sweat of your brow. My chores were many: ditchdigging, brush clearing, trash burning. Near the Gulf, one moves about in the soupy air like a bird drying its wings or an aging cowboy—arms apart from the body to let the pits breathe and to keep the sweat at bay. My parents were potters back then; they quite literally made a living from heat. Their studio on our little ranch had five or so electric kilns in a metal pole barn. Temperatures inside were diabolical. We burned our household trash in a fifty-gallon drum, and the rest went into a ravine, a makeshift dump where garbage was burned. We had cattle and horses and a big garden that needed tending to. Sweat was money.
When I was fourteen we moved to the Hill Country town of Wimberley. Spring-fed Blue Hole, an idyllic swimming hole on Cypress Creek, was within walking distance of our home; so was the cool Blanco River. Our tiny single-wide mobile home was cramped, but it had air-conditioning. Just like that, we had stepped into the modern era. It wasn’t the six-shooter that tamed the West; it was AC.
Recent years, though, have tested me. I had hoped—against available evidence—that the scorcher of 2011 was a black swan, a once-in-a-lifetime heat wave, but now it seems like almost every summer finds new ways to challenge my resilience and upend my expectations of the future. Like a lot of folks, I underestimated the urgency of climate change. In Elmer Kelton’s classic novel on the 1950s Texas drought, The Time It Never Rained, the main character—a stubborn rancher who has sworn he will outlast hard times—tells his son that they just need to wait long enough to see rain again. “It always did rain here, eventually. A country don’t change climate permanently, not all of a sudden.” Little did Charlie Flagg know.

Tyler Hoechlin- Our Love
Comic Con 2011 Panel Interview
July 2011
After doing press interviews I stand nervously next to Tyler waiting to be introduced for our comic con panel. Not only am I nervous for my first ever interview/panel, we also are a fairly new TV show so there may not be many people here. We only have a few episodes left for season 1 to air now
"You ok?" Tyler asks giving me a little smile wrapping one arm around my waist and giving me a hug
"Just nervous"
"You'll be fine. Your sat next to me so if you are asked something and your unsure just give me a nudge"
"Thanks"
"I'd like to get started and introduce the moderator for the panel Deborah Birnbaum the editor in-chief for TV Guid Magazine" Justin Levy announces through the microphone. Deborah walks on the stage to the microphone. She then starts introducing us all
"Creator and executive producer Jeff Davis, director and co executive producer Russell Mulcahy, my favourite shirtless wonder Tyler Hoechlin, the girl with the comebacks YN YLN..." I sit next to Tyler while Deborah calls out everyone else's names "you guys bought Teen Wolf to comic con last year how is it different this year?"
"Well last year no one knew us" Posey says into his mic he's sharing with Crystal
"I feel like last time people were mad we were remaking the movie" Tyler says "and now it's like Teen Wolf!"
"YN this is your first comic con, you didn't come last year so how are you finding it?" Deborah asks me. I lean over to Tyler who moves the mic a little closer to me
"Errm it's crazy. These guys have been so excited while I've been a nervous wreck not knowing what to expect, but everyone has just been so lovely and it's been great to meet everyone who's supporting the show"
"Love you!" someone in the crowd shouts
"We love you" Posey shouts back
"It's just on huge love fest" Holland chuckles
"Ok let's go down the line. Favourite episode, favourite scene"
"It's upcoming. I can't say my favourite scene yet but err I think episode 10 is my favourite” Jeff says
“Errm I think show just accelerates and episodes 11 will send tingles up your spine”
“My favourite episode so far was episode 3, the fight scene with me and Tyler, I do also like episode 9” Tyler says
“YN?”
“Ooo I did like that episode, mainly the err no fit scene that just cracked me up, but my favourite so far hasn’t aired yet so I can’t say to much, but it’s episode 12. It’s just jam packed in that episode it’s a rollercoaster” the others start to tell there favourite episodes and scenes, while I mainly listen but every time Tyler moves next to me I can feel his body touching mine in some way, wether that’s his arm touching mine or his thigh touching mine which keeps distracting me.
Jeff talks a bit about the knowledge of werewolves. Deborah asks some more questions that the others answer then it’s back to me
“YN what’s going on between Stella and Derek?”
“Errr” I laugh trying to think of an answer where it doesn’t give anything away “you know, Derek and Stella are best friends, they’ve been through a lot and will carry on to do so”
“We can see the tension between the pair, so will we be getting any Derella kiss scenes? The fans want to know if Derek and Stella will date” I look at Tyler to answer this question
“I guess you’ll have to watch more episodes to find out”
“You know it’s so hard to not give away spoilers because we all know what’s coming up. We know how the season ends and it’s so hard to sit here and answer the questions without giving anything away” I say laughing
“We want the spoilers” Deborah says
“I don’t want to loose my job” I reply looking at Jeff and Russel
“Ok but surely you can talk about off set. What’s that like for you guys?”
“We’re like a huge family” Colten says “we all genuinely like each other and hang out”
“Normally we are over at YN’s place. Especially for watch parties” Dylan looks over at me
“Me, YN and Crystal take turns in buying coffee in the morning for each other. Like Colten said we really are just a big family” since we can hold hands or act in a relationship Tyler subtly places his pinkie over mine behind our name cards.
“Alright Mr Hoechlin, Miss YLN, are your characters bad guys? We see Derek doing some not so great things and Estella just goes along with it”
“Kinda” Tyler replies but looks at me I shrug smiling at him
“Do they want to protect Scott or have they got their own agenda”
“Erm Derek is definitely trying to protect Scott but does have his own motivation”
“For me I don’t see them as the quote on quote enemy’s or anything. Derek wants something and Stella being his friend wants to help. Both have their reasons for why they do what they do but I do think they both want to help Scott”
“Derek doesn’t seem to like Stiles very much, yet Stella and Stiles get on so well”
“I think part of the reason that Derek doesn’t like Stiles is because he and Stella are so alike with the witty banter, I think Derek just has enough of them sometimes” I laugh “and I think Stiles isn’t a fan of Derek for the same reason”
“So it’s Stella’s fault?”
“Kinda I guess”
“Ok I have 1 more Derek and Stella question. Derek seems to have a past with Alison’s aunt Kate and Stella probably hates Kate the most out of everyone. What can you tell us about that?” I look at Tyler and give him a nudge to tell him to answer the question because I’m scared I might spoil it
“Errm I can tell you that you’ll learn about all of that in the next couple of episodes”
We finish up the panel and go for food before heading to more interviews that we have to do. I sit down on the couch with Tyler, both of us eating our food
“So when are you guys going to tell the public?” Holland asks sitting opposite
“Why?”
“Well your not very subtle in the way you look at each other”
“Or the sneaky touches” Colten joins Holland
“Are we really that obvious?” I ask earning a nod from both Holland and Colten
“I guess we will have to tell them eventually but right now I think we’re fine in our little bubble” Tyler says placing an arm over my shoulders
“Well you may want to look on Twitter. Fans are speculating and shipping you guys” Holland holds out her phone, Tyler just shrugs his shoulders
“Let them. Creates some buzz for the show” I roll my eyes taking Hollands phone
“Ok they aren’t that bad. Maybe we just need to be more careful”

Fests before AO3 - Hoggywarty Slash and Femslash Rec List
Happy Hump Day! I wanted to do a spotlight on some of the HP fandom fests that were happening before/outside AO3!
Context
Hoggywartyxmas is a fest that happens on Livejournal annually. 2022 is going to be their last year. So let's celebrate the slash/femslash fics/art from their run. A lot of these fics are only available on LJ. So you are going to find a lot of new fics by going through the master lists.
I picked one fic from the annual masterlists from 2010 to 2021 but everything is really good. Definitely check out the masterlists.
AO3 Collection for this list

2010 Fic and Art Masterlist
West of Stockholm by bethbethbeth
Pairing - Moody/Snape
Read this because - Absolutely perfect characterizations! <3
Again Snape dropped his gaze. "The Headmaster is aware that I have certain...interests."
"What sort of interests?"
  2011 Fic and Art Masterlist
A Feather on One's Cap by featherxquill
Pairing - McGonagall/Hooch/Rita Skeeter
Read this because - the poly negotiations are brilliant.
Minerva smiled, and how wonderful it was to have a partner who understood that just because Rolanda desired others, whether or not she acted on it, it did not make the love between them, or her desire for Minerva, any less. There had been other lovers in Rolanda’s past that had been affronted at the very idea. It was probably for the best that none of those relationships had lasted very long.

Read this because - the Hooch POV is amazing. Dry and funny.
Now, if you have spent any time with Minerva McGonagall, you know that she exudes a certain...unflappability. And when she is, how shall we say...flapped?...you know very well that the best course of action does not involve pointing it out.

Read this because - WOLDY! <3 One of my fav hp femslash authors. But also. This fic. Brilliant ladies being brilliant together. One of my favorite things about Woldy's writing is how intelligent it is. Their characters don't feel pretentious but just feel intelligent. Idk how to explain!
“I wouldn’t have chosen you as a partner,” says Augusta gruffly, “but it probably does me good to have some intelligent conversation.”

Day 21: Brighton Rock from Sheer Heart Attack
I am so excited to start Sheer Heart Attack. It’s one of my favorites. I know I say that about all of them, but really…
I remember the first time I listened to this album in its entirety, on vinyl, and Brighton Rock came on first. I was amused at first, with the carnival beginning. It is just so unique, and I’m always fascinated with what songs Queen chooses to go in what order on their albums. Think about it: back when vinyl was king, a lot of actual thought went into the song order, because you played a record seamlessly, versus track by track. In Queen 2, the band showed they could merge songs beautifully, and in this album, we see it again on several of the songs.
Anyway, back to Brighton Rock. We start out at this carnival, with all the background noise and music that makes me think I’m at some seaside carnival. Then, that noise gives way to some very fast guitar, getting louder and louder, adding drums. Now, they have our attention.
Another surprise: Freddie in falsetto, telling a story.
“Happy little day, Jimmy went away. Met his little Jenny on a public holiday.”
Okay so they’re telling us a story with this one.
I love, love, love, how Freddie’s voice continues in falsetto until he hits: “It’s good to know there’s still a little magic in the air.” Halfway through the word magic, he transforms his voice, just like that, flawlessly, into another pitch.
Brian’s ever present guitar punctuates the whole thing.
Freddie’s back, but this time he’s playing each character.
First, he’s Jimmy, and his voice is deeper: “Jenny will you stay, tarry with me, pray?”
Next, he plays Jenny (in falsetto again): “Oh no, I must away, to my Mum in disarray…”
I have to say, “Oh, rock of ages, do not crumble, love is breathing still” is a beautiful lyric, but I’m not sure I quite understand. Rock of ages is a Biblical term, or at least traditionally? Anyway, sometimes it’s best not to overthink pretty lyrics, but to enjoy them. What follows is very whimsical anyway: “Oh, lady moonshine down, a little people magic if you will.”
Something about this makes me think Brian wrote it. I probably already knew that, but that lady moonshine part makes me think of him.
Also, the guitar solo to come is of course Brian…and it’s fucking epic.
Not enough can be said about the guitar in this. I never want it to end…which is amazing because it truly goes on for a long time. But it’s not just a guitar. It’s a story being told through the instrument. It’s emotion and narrative, all coming from Brian’s strings. Genius. Utter genius.
Of course, during the guitar solo of this song, during live shows to follow, the band would always use this opportunity to make costume changes (namely Freddie of course) and any set alterations that needed to be done.
Don’t mistake though: this song is anything but filler. It’s a rock fest. It’s an ear-gasm.
Seriously, there are so many layers to this. It’s unbelievable. BRIAN, you glorious bastard!
(Also, Freddie’s giggle at the end is just outrageous!)

Jesse Eisenberg Talks About Shifting From Acting to Directing, Working With Julianne Moore and Emma Stone in ‘When You Finish Saving the World’
Midway through the Sarajevo Film Festival, local fest publications seized on a quote that Jesse Eisenberg had given in Q&As that week: Sarajevo, the actor-writer-director said, is his favorite city in the world. From some stars, that would be an empty soundbite; from Eisenberg, who stayed at the festival for several days to explore local culture and history, it was entirely heartfelt.
The festival, meanwhile, returned his love, presenting him with an honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award, and hosting an open-air screening of his directorial debut, “When You Finish Saving the World,” a bittersweet satire of generational conflict, and the contemporary nuances of charity and activism. We invited him to the Variety Lounge presented by Sarajevo Film Festival and BH Telecom to talk through the challenges of switching from acting to directing, working with Julianne Moore and Emma Stone, and the most unexpected of his upcoming roles.
“Maybe unconsciously I thought I could direct a movie, but I never allowed myself to think of it explicitly, because it just feels like such a cliche,” says Eisenberg — who was Oscar-nominated in 2011 for playing Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’s generation-defining “The Social Network,” but this time opted to stay behind the camera. Adapting a story he originally conceived as an audio drama for Audible, he retained “Stranger Things” star Finn Wolfhard from the audio cast, but brought on Moore as the brittle do-gooder mother of Wolfhard’s socially awkward teen.
Directing actors, however, brought out his nerves. “I’ve received so many bad notes in my life as an actor,” he explains. “I was so unnecessarily fearful that I’d be giving them to my actors.” With Moore, however, he hardly had to worry: “She’s the best,” he says simply, adding that like him, she gravitates toward characters who are “very cold and very warm at the same time, their coldness [coming] from their own insecurities rather than their own malice.”
The film also marks an unlikely reunion between Eisenberg and his old “Zombieland” co-star Stone, who likewise flexes her off-screen muscles, having produced “When You Finish Saving the World” with her husband Dave McCary. Despite branching out like his, however, Eisenberg is eager to return to acting, and speaks with particular excitement of a surprising upcoming role in a film from fraternal directing duo David and Nathan Zellner. “I play a Sasquatch: full makeup, full body hair, no lines. I grunt, but no lines,” he says with a laugh. “I’m so looking forward to this.”

18th September 2022: Post 1 of 2-Boat trip with Birds of Poole Harbour
We spent some more brilliant time in Poole Harbour during this week off as we went on an autumn cruise with Birds of Poole Harbour this morning/early afternoon. The main hope of the trip was for me to finally see a White-tailed Eagle in the south again after the Isle of Wight reintroduction with a fair few being seen in the harbour especially along the Wareham Channel where we went to Ham Common Viewpoint to overlook on Monday, and on the way back on the boat we did see one. It was an honour to see this gigantic figure gliding through the air as though a log in the sky. Unmissable, unmistakable and phenomenal to see we enjoyed a glorious few minutes seeing it in the air before it went down into land. It was a splendid sight, one to really behold and I was in my element watching it and so happy. They don’t spend much of their day in the air so there is a lot of luck involved in seeing them, and I was over the moon to see one in this year full of big bird of prey experiences for me.
It’s been a very strong year for birds of prey for me, having now seen sixteen bird of prey species this year of the eighteen seen in my life. It’s only the third time I’ve seen a White-tailed Eagle, after a Hampshire rarity that we caught up with at Old Basing in 2011 and one in the Highlands of Scotland in 2018. Seeing it mobbed by birds including an Osprey and Buzzard which was some sight was amazing with an Osprey with fish below the eagle at one point in the air too seeing that in the same binocular view was quite something. What a few minutes it was to see the eagle.
Before seeing the eagle it had been a raptor fest in the harbour with some astounding views of Ospreys on this sunny morning particularly one. Late on in the time the Ospreys are migrating through this harbour where this species did historically nest for the first time in the south for two hundred years this year in another inspiring reintroduction programme it was a treat and a really notable thing in itself. Seeing their distinctive body and beautiful colours and markings finely shining in the sunlight and seeing them do dives towards the water was fantastic. We saw juvenile and adult, in the best ever year I have had for seeing them I cherished enthralling moments with this one of my very and original favourite birds. I took the fourth picture in this photoset of an Osprey.
It was an autumn bird safari trip and it was a bird fest with so many species seen. Leading the other highlights were yet more Kingfishers seen this week off and this month as we went past the Wareham Channel into the River Frome, the red and blue of the bird as they zipped by enchanted in the sunlight with them seen perched too. Seeing Osprey and Kingfisher together two of my original favourite birds that I have loosely thought of together as they both eat fish that I have had top years for was extraordinary. Marsh Harriers were another top bird of prey to see on the trip. Little Stint, Wood Sandpiper and Common Sandpiper key birds of our year seen nicely again in 2022 were highlights in a pool near the river. Avocet and many Black-tailed Godwits were other wading bird highlights it was nice to see a fair few of the latter feeding in a field beside the river. There were decent amounts of hirundines moving through a constant this week with Swallow, House Martin and Sand Martin seen. More Sandwich Terns this week, Great Black-backed Gull and a stunning Yellow-legged Gull were standout birds on the trip too and so good to see. I took the third and seventh pictures in this photoset of a Shag and Cormorant on the trip other great birds to see today. Away from birds seeing Sika Deers to add to the amazing mammals seen this week was great.
It really was a gorgeous morning and early afternoon with it so sunny, perfect to enjoy the vast landscape of the bright blue harbour and gorgeous green landscape around once more with the reedbed, riverine and lake habitat looking divine in the sunshine too. Seeing Ham Common, Arne, Brownsea Island and Corfe Castle was great as I was able to piece together the geography of places in and around the harbour I have long known or learnt more recently. I took the first two, fifth, sixth and final three pictures in this photoset of views on the boat trip.
It was all so well organised today, the team from Birds of Poole Harbour and the boat crew went out of their way to make it a very enjoyable and informative morning with such interesting and engaging commentary and expert guiding on seeing species. It was so welcoming and friendly, in keeping with the exciting projects underway to really make the harbour and this part of the coast an example to be aspired to on how to support wildlife and help the ecosystem thrive. The team were so enthusiastic and there was a great buzz among all of us in the big moments especially when the White-tailed Eagles and Ospreys were spotted. What an ending to our days off on leave that rather started and ended with a brilliant boat trip making the most of the wonders of the south coast.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: Five of my favourite birds the Marsh Harrier, Buzzard, Osprey, Kingfisher and Little Egret, one of my favourite mammals the Sika Deer, White-tailed Eagle, Carrion Crow, Herring Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Black-headed Gull, Sandwich Tern, Cormorant and Grey Heron well again, Spoonbills well at Arne, Mallard, Gadwall, a fair few Mute Swans nicely, Canada Goose, Egyptian Goose, Black-tailed Godwit, Redshank, Avocet, Oystercatcher, Common Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Little Stint, Stonechat, Blue Tit looking nice in the reedbed, Swallow, House Martin, Sand Martin, Pied Wagtail, Woodpigeon and wasps.

A Q(PR)eer Sunday
Thank you for the push @voidsteffy, I really needed it! Also, this is for day 5 prompt (Sunday) @desi-lgbt-fest. Based on the movie Oh My Friend (2011)
"What is the plan for today?" Chandu asked as he bounced the baby lightly. It had just been a few days since they had reunited and while it was exhausting, Chandu had never felt more peaceful and fulfilled, ever. His best friend by his side, the love of their lives behind them... this was the least he could ask for.
"Just a day in. No going out, no nothing." Siri called out tiredly as she chopped up the vegetables, thankful for the assistance from Ritu. They might not have seen each other eye to eye for some time but... in this short while, it felt like they were actually getting along.
"Actually," Uday said, walking in with a bag of snacks. "I was wondering if we could talk."
"About?"
"You and Siri."
"What about us?"
Uday seemed to debate over his words for a while before shrugging.
"I still feel like you and Siri are not just friends. Or in your words, best friends." he opened bluntly.
"Uday I swear to god! Don't start on this again. I can't- We can't-"
"Relax, relax man! Chill! I am not going down that route at all." Uday said, hands raised in the air as he eyed how his wife's hold on the knife had tightened.
"Uday-"
"Just... listen, alright. Maybe it'll make sense if I finish the whole explanation..."
Chandu sighed and sat down, reluctantly signalling the other man to go ahead.
"Alright. So... remember the last time I said the same thing. Insisted that you behaved like lovers. And how you both defended that you were just best friends but at the same time were each other's lives since childhood. And how in those 3 years of staying apart with no contact, you confessed that you felt as if a part of yourselves had died."
He took a sip of water and cleared his throat. "That day, when I asked you, Siri, who you will choose between myself and Chandu, you said that both of us were equally important. And Chandu had mentioned a similar statement."
Siri had abandoned all pretence of working in the kitchen at this point and sat down near Chandu, nervous as to where this was going.
"I confess. At that point, I was not as open-minded. I didn't really understand all of... this, that was going on between the two of you. It was... according to the society, not really acceptable or looked down upon. It was strange. Nearly unheard of at that time. But then... things changed."
He looked the two friends in the eye as he said this. "I met a couple of my uni mates a while after we shifted to the US, did a catching up of sorts. In hindsight, they were similar to the two of you, stuck to the hip. They told me that they were planning on a marriage of convenience, both of them were not interested in marrying at all."
"But... there was just one thing that surprised me. They said that they were never romantically interested in each other, nor was it sexual. But at the same time... they always saw themselves as not best friends, but they were more. They had an emotional connection, and understanding, which they wanted to maintain that they felt no one else can give them. And it reminded me of the two of you. You use the exact same words when you try to describe your relationship and when they told me that... it got me thinking. I think you might be in a QPR without knowing it."
"QPR?" Ritu asked curiously.
"A Queer Platonic Relationship. Usually considered as relationships that are... outside the societal norm but at the same time, not romantic or sexual in nature. Usually. It depends on the people and boundaries of the levels of intimacy. It can be between two or more people and is usually used for aromantic people but it can also fit in other aspects too. There is no specific gender/sexuality it is attributed to." He paused for a moment. "At least that's what they said. I didn't totally get it. But when I heard about it, all I could think about was the two of you."
Chandu blinked. "You have totally lost me there, bro. Please simplify it for us low minded people."
"I am just quoting what they said to me that day so I don't know if it is accurate but... 'QPRs are hard to explain as they vary from person to person, relationship to relationship. But the baseline is that it is totally a feeling above the society's view of a best friend but not exactly a romantic relationship either, which is what most people assume. It is like walking the tightrope, that one. You are going to toe the line either way and people judge you for that.' Again. I am not really sure and you'll have to do some research on your own... but yeah. I had to say this."
"Is this why you called me? During the delivery?" Chandu asked after a few minutes. "I mean, I should be honest, I don't know what you are saying right now but... this small conversation... it-"
"Kinda, yeah. It made me look back and think a lot, ponder over stuff I did, and said, back then. And it is true. I would never truly understand what it is that is between the two of you. And what Ritu and I did back then, hurt you in more ways than we could ever imagine. But... I wish to try to be better at the whole understanding thing. And I totally get it if you two don't think that... you know. The label... Maybe it was the wrong way to go about it. But you know me, I speak out what's in my mind. Just... look into it someday?" he said, suddenly feeling bashful.
"Thanks, Ra.
Again, sorry if I have gotten something wrong but this was something I thought of and couldn't get it out of my head so... here you go!

Movies of 2023 - My Pre-Summer Rundown (Part 2)
The Top Ten:
10.  LAND OF BAD – Remember back in 2020 when I heaped praise on the harrowing deep sea horror thriller Underwater, the first proper studio movie from up-and-coming writer-director William Eubank, after he’d become one of my one-to-watch rising star filmmakers with his first two, definitively INDIE sci-fi movies Love and The Signal?  I’m sure my regulars will … anyways, he’s shed the more outlandish genre trappings for his fourth feature, but none of his winning auteur flair, robust atmospherics and deft skill at crafting meaty action sequences, this time turning his already deeply assured artistic hand to cranking out a good old fashioned action flick, and the results are as impressive as previous showings.  This one definitely has the strongest star power to date, what with the new Netflix Witcher himself, Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games) putting in a typically solid action hero showing as Sgt. “Playboy” Kinney, a young US Air Force TACP officer who finds himself attached to a small Delta Force team braving Philippines jungle to rescue a captive CIA asset from an imbedded terrorist cell; Russell Crowe, meanwhile, chews the scenery as Capt. Eddie “Reaper” Grimm, the grizzled, OCD-riddled drone pilot assigned to provide overwatch and air support throughout the operation.  Needless to say, when things go badly wrong and Kinney finds himself alone in the bush with angry hostiles hot on his heels, Grimm becomes his only hope for making it out alive … this is a typically big, loud and VERY dumb action-fest that wears its trope-heavy heart on its Star Spangled sleeve, but Eubank and The Signal’s co-writer David Frigerio keep things compelling and make it EASY for us to invest in the story’s well-rounded characters, while the cast are all on fine form, the two EXTREMELY capable leads ably supported by Heroes’ Milo Ventimiglia, American Gods’ Ricky Whittle and Hemsworth’s brother Luke (Westworld) as the Delta troopers, and Chika Ikogwe (Heartbreak High, The Tourist) as Grimm’s steadfast co-pilot Staff Sgt. Nia Branson.  Of course, at the end of the day we don’t watch these kinds of movies for complex plots, Oscar-worthy performances or Shakespeare-level scripts – this is all about thrilling escapist action, big explosions and maybe even some deftly-executed, stylistic cinematographic eye candy, and Eubank and co DEFINITELY delivered on ALL those fronts, crafting a persistently white-knuckle rollercoaster ride that’s guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.  Subtle it ain’t, but this movie does EXACTLY what it promises to, and does it with STYLE.
9.  THE IRON CLAW – Acclaimed indie filmmaker Sean Durkin has been making waves ever since 2011 with his complex psychological drama Martha Marcy May Marlene and its long-gestating 2020 follow-up The Nest, but his third feature is finally propelling him into BIG TIME star-power recognition with this intense, unflinching and emotionally devastating exploration of the haunting true story of the Von Erich family, who rose to stardom in the late 70s to ALMOST become the dominant sporting dynasty in American pro-wrestling, except for a persistent family “curse” which kept them from every truly achieving that coveted top spot.  Rocked by a string of accidents and harrowing deaths, it’s a compelling tale of tragedy and heartbreak which writer-director Durkin has turned into one of the year’s most powerful pieces of worthy Award-bait (only to be unfairly and comprehensively SNUBBED across the board, particularly by the Academy).  The story unfolds predominantly from the point-of-view of Kevin Von Erich (Zac Efron), the (sort of) eldest son of the family’s brutally overbearing never-quite-made-it veteran wrestler patriarch Fritz (Mindhunter’s Holt McCallany), whose dream is to be the greatest pro-wrestler of all time, only for his dad to continually pass him over for his brothers David (Trust’s Harris Dickinson), Kerry (The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White) and Mike (Superior and Two Sentence Horror Stories’ Stanley Simons) while he tries to fulfil his own dream of creating a wrestling-based media empire … only for compounded tragedy to knock the Von Erichs off their newfound pedestal just as they’ve reached it.  Durkin has crafted a potent biopic of significant raw power, turning one of the darkest chapters of the dawn of modern pro-wrestling into two of the most heartbreaking hours I’ve spent at the cinema in a good long while, largely reining in any artistic flair and indulgence to instead let the challenging story and well-realised characters do the heavy lifting, and the uniformly EXCEPTIONAL cast definitely rose to the occasion.  All four of the young actors playing the Von Erich sons are amazing here, particularly White, while Maura Tierney and Lily James help to keep the film from getting TOO overwhelmed by burgeoning testosterone as the boys’ gentle, devout mother Doris and Kevin’s opinionated young wife Pam; in the end, though, the film is soundly dominated by the two-handed lead fireworks from Efron and McCallany – Zac has NEVER been better than he is here, going above-and-beyond by COMPLETELY transforming himself physically while also acting his socks off in what must have been an extremely draining performance, while it’s nice to FINALLY see Holt get a role that can REALLY get him his amazing talents the recognition they’ve long deserved, sinking his teeth into a complex portrayal of a man who never quite made it for himself and is now determined to live that dream vicariously through his own children, no matter the cost to their wellbeing.  The results are, ultimately, a very tough watch, but this is an incredibly well-made film that rewards those who are strong enough to tough it out, albeit one which is guaranteed to jerk a whole lot of tears out of viewers before the end credits roll.
8.  DOUBLE BLIND – Every year there’s at least a handful of under-the-radar indies that really impress me enough that I’m willing to really champion them, and it’s particularly gratifying whenever I find one which blows critics and other audience members away as much as myself.  Such it is with the feature debut of Irish director Ian Hunt-Duffy, a sneaky psychological horror thriller which has earned itself a coveted 100% Fresh Score from Rotten Tomatoes with its mixture of slowburn creepiness, burgeoning stress-driven paranoid terror and some particularly twisted mind-bending body horror.  Millie Brady (The Last Kingdom, Pride & Prejudice & Zombies) makes for a compellingly believable rough-around-the-edges every-girl heroine as Claire, a down-on-her-luck young woman who enrols in a double blind trial for an experimental drug to keep from becoming homeless, only to become increasingly miserable as the compound she’s been injected with causes chronic insomnia in herself and her fellow test subjects.  Then one of them suddenly dies in the most horrible way when her exhausted body finally succumbs to long-prevented sleep, and it quickly becomes clear that every one of them is now living on dangerously short borrowed time, while the pharmaceutical company they’ve been commissioned by is suddenly refusing to let them out of quarantine … Brady’s ably supported by a small but perfectly cast collection of acting talent, with Akshay Kumar (Pandora, Homeland) and Diarmuid Noyes (Borgia) particularly impressing as fellow sleep-deprived lab rats and Pollyanna McIntosh (The Walking Dead) as the trial’s put-upon overseer, Dr Burke, while Hunt-Duffy wrangles his potent cast through the increasingly nightmarish twists and turns of the harrowing script, crafted with similarly assured skill by fellow newcomer screenwriter Darach McGarrigle.  Altogether this is an incredible debut by a couple of clear one-to-watch talents, and a nifty little uncut gem which deserves some sleeper hit status going forward.  Definitely well worth chasing down and giving a chance.
7.  LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL – Australian writer-director duo Colin and Cameron Cairnes exploded onto the indie horror scene with their delirious jet black comedy horror 100 Bloody Acres back in 2012, which proved to be one of the most enjoyably OUT THERE horror flicks I’ve EVER SEEN come out of Aussie cinema, and they continued the trend with similarly ingenious but significantly more serious deadly prank-show slasher Scare Campaign.  Their long awaited Hollywood debut definitely plays itself dead straight, presenting a fictional faux-documentary presentation of a long-lost episode of fictional 1970s chat show Night Owls (together with “recently unearthed” B-roll footage of backstage events) in which struggling TV host Jack Delroy (The Suicide Squad’s David Dastmalchian) attempts to put his long-time second-place show (always outshone by The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson) at the top of the ratings board by capping his annual Halloween Special with a live interview with a demon supposedly inhabiting the teenage sole survivor of the bloody massacre of a Satanic cult.  This is EASILY the scariest film I’ve seen this year (so far), a genuinely skin-crawling, spine-chilling piece of thoroughly queasy-making atmospheric horror that uses its period setting to perfect effect to not only give the unfolding events a convincing flavour but also pay off some particularly interesting era-specific themes and conceits.  Even before the horror elements start to come to the fore the film is shot through with a palpable sense of lingering dread, building to a genuinely terrifying climactic unleashing of nightmarish proportions to rival the very classic genre mainstays, like The Exorcist and The Omen, that it’s clearly paying loving homage to.  There are quality turns from a very game cast, particularly Ian Bliss (The Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions) as one of the night’s guests, Carmichael Haig, a stage magician-turned professional sceptic, and Ingrid Torelli (Five Bedrooms) as Lilly, the supremely creepy overly-cheerful and polite vessel of demonic possession, but the film is definitely dominated by its lead, Dastmalchian turning in yet an astounding performance of perfectly pitched charismatic charm that hides an intriguingly affecting reserve of wounded vulnerability, powering the film’s horrifying events through to their genuinely shocking conclusion.  Did I mention there’s also an enjoyably quirky turn from Michael Ironside as the documentary narrator?  That’s just the icing on the cake for a truly perfect slice of horror cinema which, in a purely critical rundown, would likely top my horror cinema list for the year.  As it is, this WAS one hell of a genre gem …
6.  THE BEEKEEPER – David Ayer doing a big noisy action-heavy revenge thriller starring Jason Statham?  That’s totally gonna be a clunky, cheesy guilty pleasure, right?  It’s definitely what the trailer made it look like – imagine my surprise, then, when this turned out to be a surprisingly solid, meaty and, above all else, INTELLIGENT actioner which provides a far greater cerebral challenge than your average by-the-numbers exploitation thriller.  Then again, maybe I shouldn’t be THAT surprised – Ayer may have made the lowbrow likes of the first Suicide Squad movie, Bright (which I nonetheless didn’t think deserved ANYTHING LIKE the amount of hate it actually got) and the rightly derided The Tax Collector, but he’s also the director who brought us genuinely IMPRESSIVE cinema like Fury, End of Watch and the best movie Arnold Schwarzenegger’s done in a damn long while, Sabotage.  This one definitely belongs in THAT camp, Ayer delivering with gusto like he always does on the action front but also investing a good deal more substance and emotional depth, due in no small part to the additional efforts of a deeply committed leading man and a thought-provokingly timely screenplay from Kurt Wimmer (Law Abiding Citizen, Salt and Ayer’s own Street Kings).  Statham stars as Adam Clay, a beekeeper renting some farmland from retired schoolteacher Eloise Parker (the legendary Phylicia Rashad), who falls victim to an online phishing scam which sees her stripped of her life savings and the entire balance of a $2 million charity fund she manages, leading her to commit suicide in shame.  Bad news for the scammers, though, when it turns out that Clay’s profession is merely a cover, because he’s actually a FIGURATIVE Beekeeper, an agent for a covert governmental security program SO SECRET that almost nobody even knows it exists, a genuinely LETHAL former special forces badass so highly skilled that he makes Navy SEALs look like National Guard, and he’s got the technological counter-terrorist knowhow to make tracking down these nefarious f£$%ers proper child’s-play.  You can, of course, TOTALLY see where this is gonna go … even so, this is a film which genuinely keeps you guessing, never telegraphing its heavyweight punches and throwing in plenty of twists over the course of its surprisingly streamlined 105 minute runtime.  As the star of the Expendables and Transporter movies, Statham can do this kind of action (anti) hero role in his sleep, but he really shows up in all the ways that count here, making Clay come across as a preternatural badass who nonetheless has some subtly nuanced layers underneath his seemingly bulletproof, tightly toned shell; The Umbrella Academy’s Emmy Raver-Lampman, meanwhile, helps keep the exposition from getting dull and keeps the unravelling mystery fascinating as Eloise’s acerbic yet dogged FBI agent daughter Verona Parker, torn between her duty to bring Clay in and her personal investment in seeing the people responsible for her mother’s death pay for their crimes, while Josh Hutcherson and genuinely living legend Jeremy Irons make for compellingly complex antagonists as tech billionaire Derek Danforth, the louche and reptilian owner of the company that covertly runs the online scams, and his extremely reluctant protector, suave former CIA director-turned security expert Wallace Westwyld.  Altogether this is in an entirely different league than most of the action cinema I’ve seen Statham in over the years, Ayer and Wimmer helping him create his most interesting genre character TO DATE, one that I trust, given the film’s skilful sequel teasing and its deservedly MASSIVE box office performance, shouldn’t take long to return to the big screen, and I for one CANNOT WAIT …
5.  LOVE LIES BLEEDING – Rose Glass made a suitably offbeat splash with her directorial feature debut Saint Maud back in 2019, a deeply twisted psychological horror about religious fervour … so her subsequence team-up with A24 made perfect sense to me.  Even so, when I found out that her next project was a psychological thriller about lesbian bodybuilders I still had NO IDEA what to expect, certainly not from THIS filmmaker … and even now I’ve seen it (TWICE, in fact), I STILL don’t know QUITE what to make of it.  This is a seriously WEIRD film, kind of like a postmodern LGBTQ version of Body Heat married to the bizarre existential extremes of Mandy, maybe, but I can’t deny that, while it definitely left me baffled, I couldn’t deny that it was also a deeply fascinating, thoroughly compelling and unapologetically SEXY film too, one of THE hottest thrillers I’ve come across in a good long while.  Kristen Stewart and my girl Katie O’Brian (seriously, I’ve been a fan ever since Z Nation, long before she was in The Mandalorian and Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania) are both ON FIRE, both metaphorically and VERY NEARLY literally, as Lou Langston, the very publicly lesbian manager of a cruddy Albuquerque gym in 1989, and new-to-town drifter Jackie Cleaver, an aspiring bodybuilder trying to make her way to Las Vegas to attend a competition in Las Vegas.  The pair fall fast and VERY HARD in love, but storm clouds are already gathering as the FBI are sniffing round Lou, looking for her reluctant help in bringing down her local criminal kingpin father Lou Langston Sr. (Ed Harris), while Lou’s sister Beth (Jenna Malone) is suffering at the hands of her increasingly vicious abusive husband J.J. (Dave Franco), and one night everything comes to a head and their lives are thrown into utter chaos … this film has a much more complicated, overblown and downright TWISTED plot than it really has any need for, but this isn’t a film where the story is really THAT IMPORTANT, Glass and co-writer Weronika Tofilska instead concentrating most of their effort on the complex and morally ambiguous characters and their deeply unhealthy interpersonal relationships.  Even the two lead protagonists, despite their powerful love, are definitely a much more toxic mess than the trailers made them out to be, but the way they’re played means we still can’t help rooting for them no matter WHAT they do – this is definitely THE BEST performance I’ve seen Stewart deliver to date, even putting her recent acclaimed turn in Spencer to shame, while I’ve been waiting so long for O’Brian to FINALLY land a role that TRULY fits her largely underrated talents, which this DEFINITELY IS, and their chemistry is genuinely OFF THE CHARTS, every one of their scenes threatening to ignite the celluloid, even when they’ve both got all their clothes ON; meanwhile the rest of the cast similarly impress, Harris particularly proving a suitably spooky villain as he plays it subtly charming and seductive, while Dickinson’s Anna Baryshnikov is supremely creepy as Daisy, an emotionally manipulative local lesbian who’s formed a particularly uncomfortable obsession with Lou.  Steamy, unsettling, shocking and frequently downright NASTY, with a line in truly WEIRD hallucinatory escapism bordering on genuine body horror, this is definitely NOT a film for the faint-hearted OR the easily offended, but its many virtues FAR exceed any flaws it may display, meaning that Rose Glass has got another winner on her hands, while A24 have got another high profile ODDITY to further perplex and thrill their fans with.
4.  ABIGAIL – My current horror movie of the year is TWO of my favourite things in the genre rolled into one – if there’s one thing I really CAN’T resist, it’s well-executed horror comedy, where a film is genuinely scary, but it doesn’t take itself OVERLY seriously, and has a real strong sense of humour.  I’m also a real sucker for VAMPIRES (ahem).  Put the two together and a movie has to try REAL HARD for me not to like it, so this one was pretty much guaranteed to get me on its side before it even started.  Co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Opin and Tyler Gillett have been sneaking round the outskirts of my movie-fan radar for a few years now, having first proper popped up just before COVID with black comedy slasher Ready Or Not, before bringing the last two Scream movies into cinemas (I may have been underwhelmed by the fifth, but the sixth was definitely a major step back in the right direction).  Not that I even realised THIS was from them until after the fact – I took it entirely for its own merits, drawn in purely by the intriguing premise and promise of equal part scares and laughs, and it did not disappoint, EASILY proving to be the best offering I’ve seen from them both so far.  Scream’s Melissa Barrera stars as “Joey”, one of an anonymous crew of crooks brought together by sleazy criminal mastermind Lambert (Giancarlo Esposito) to facilitate the kidnapping of the eponymous young ballerina daughter (Mathilda the Musical’s Alisha Weir) of a local business rival.  The job seems to go off without a hitch, and they settle in for a twenty-four hour wait in an isolated mansion before the ransom exchange, charged with keeping an eye on the girl … before one of them turns up dead in the worst way possible, and it dawns on them that there’s something truly monstrous stalking the halls of the house.  Best not give away any more than that, ‘least not for those who didn’t get the twist pretty comprehensively spoiled by the advertising campaign … suffice to say that what unfolds is a blood-soaked, riotously entertaining blackly comic horror-show that kept me hooked right through a selection of effective twists to a particularly surprising climax.  Barrera and the rest are clearly having the time of their lives here, everybody going all out with the material with more than one enjoyably ripe, larger-than-life performance to really impress (not least Dan Stevens, who chews the scenery with particular wild-eyed enthusiasm throughout), while this definitely provides a fitting farewell to one of the cast – “Dean” was the final role of Euphoria’s Angus Cloud before his tragic death last year, and he really did himself proud here.  This is one of the most full-on visceral vampire movies I’ve seen in a while, rivalling last year’s horror highlight Renfield for gleefully disgusting practical effects, and while the scares here are VERY EFFECTIVE throughout, almost every sequence is nonetheless delivered with its tongue firmly planted in cheek, the directing duo never letting it get too (ahem) dark or depressing even when the blood really starts to fly.  Those who enjoy their horror liberally laced with humour (like myself) will find this particular recipe to be all but irresistible, and as a result it’s gonna be a real tough act to beat before year’s end.
3.  KUNG FU PANDA 4 – The Dragon Warrior is back once again for a long-awaited fourth adventure, and while there’s always room for more of my second favourite Dreamworks animated franchise there are strong indicators that this could well be it, and if it is, this would certainly be a worthy bow-out for one of my very favourite anthropomorphic movie characters.  The eponymous martial arts master, Po (the boundlessly endearing Jack Black, as wondrously effervescent as ever), is at the height of his astounding abilities, and his crabby red panda mentor Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) thinks it’s time for him to take his place as the spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace, while also choosing a successor to begin training as the new Dragon Warrior.  Po, however, couldn’t be more against this particular idea, since there’s nothing he loves more than kicking butt and taking names (although he’s never been very good at the latter), so when it seems like his old foe Tai Lung (a welcome return for the great Ian McShane) has returned he jumps at the chance to investigate.  Instead he discovers that there’s a new threat out there – a shapeshifting sorceress known as The Chameleon (Viola Davis) has taken control of the distance metropolis of Juniper City, making it her base of operations from which to launch her nefarious plan to reach into the Spirit World and steal the Kung Fu of ever master villain there.  Po’s only hope of defeating her is to enlist the very reluctant help one of the city’s residents, a nefarious corsac fox thief named Zhen (Awkwafina) who may prove more of a handful than he bargained on … the series continues to fire on all cylinders with all prerequisite elements functioning exactly as they should – the franchise may have peaked with the second film, but they’ve maintained an impressive level of quality throughout, and this fourth entry definitely measures up very well by comparison, regardless of what some naysayers may have said.  This is just as fun, amusing, ingenious, exciting and visually arresting as ever before, and rather than stripping away much of the fun by leaving the Furious Five out this time round, the story’s a good deal tighter and much more focused here, rightly focusing on the relationship that develops between Po and Zhen as they go from strangers to rivals to friends in very organic fashion.  It certainly helps that the two leads have such strong chemistry – Black’s having as much fun as ever while his creation remains his adorably geeky self, while Awkwafina brings plenty of likeable sass and snark to proceedings, and they gel very well over the course of the film.  Davis, meanwhile, creates a compelling villain with strong motives for her dastardly plot, while there’s quality support from returning voices like Hoffman alongside Bryan Cranston and James Hong as Po’s two dads Li Shan and Mr Ping, and series newcomers such as Ke Huy Quan, fresh from his post-Everything Everywhere All At Once success as Zhen’s estranged pangolin mentor Han.  Granted, ultimately this feels like just a lot more of the same, but when the end results are still so consistent there’s no real room for complaint, and as far as I’m concerned the series is still as strong as it was when it started, from the gorgeous animation and inspired design to the exquisitely executed action and, once again, a spectacular score from Hans Zimmer, this time joined by regular collaborator Steve Mazzaro (the highlight here very much proving a truly WILD orchestral rendition of Ozzy Osbourne’s Crazy Train during the film’s best set-piece).  Ultimately, if this really IS it for the franchise, I think it’s a fitting place to call it a day, although I’m sure I ain’t alone in hoping for a little more, and there’s definitely a strong indicator where they COULD go from here …
2.  CIVIL WAR – Alex Garland is a filmmaker I’ve been a big fan of since before he even WAS a filmmaker, back when he was just writing screenplays for the likes of 28 Days Later and Sunshine.  That being said, he’s consistently blown us away ever since he covertly took the reins for 2012’s criminally overlooked Dredd (I’m definitely inclined to believe the rumours that he actually helmed that one himself, since it’s SO MUCH an Alex Garland movie), rightly wowing audiences with both ex_machina and Annihilation (Men was, ultimately, TOO strong and visceral an experience for me to really LIKE, but I can’t help admitting I was definitely IMPRESSED by it), so I was already onboard for this one even before the genuinely exciting first trailer starting making the rounds.  But even if I hadn’t already known his work, I definitely would’ve been up for this truly fascinating premise – set in an uncomfortably believable near future (especially given where the current US political system looks to be heading), it follows a quartet of journalists as they travel into the war-torn heart of an America ravaged by a potent clash between the loyal forces of an authoritarian President who’s refused to step down after the end of his official term (Nick Offerman) and a coalition of secessionist states determined to oust him and his administration.  Kirsten Dunst leads the cast with what might be the best performance of her career as Lee Smith, a cynical photojournalist with a fearsome reputation, joining her longtime work-partner Joel (Narcos’ Wagner Moura, effortlessly charming and lovably cocky as an unapologetic adrenaline junkie) in his quest to interview the President before he’s forcibly removed from Office; tagging along, meanwhile, are Sammy (a typically charismatic and stately turn from the mighty Stephen McKinley Henderson), a world-weary veteran reporter who’s just hitching a ride to the front lines of the conflict, and Jessie Cullen (Priscilla’s Cailee Spaeny, sweet and naïve but with a deep reserve of feeling), a wannabe photojournalist who idolises Lee and is determined to prove herself to her hero, even if it ends up getting her killed.  Through their experiences on the open road and the various events they witness, we watch this terrifying war unfold as it builds to its powerful endgame, moving from the wilds of Upstate New York to the streets of Washington itself, and it’s brought home in genuinely harrowing detail just what a nightmare this could well be if it really does happen.  Garland’s certainly not pulling ANY punches here, clearly fundamentally aware of where we might end up if we don’t wise up REAL QUICK (although by this point I wonder if the warning might have come a bit TOO LATE), while also delivering an endlessly fascinating dystopian action thriller for good measure, packed with stunning explosive action sequences and at least one genuinely UNBEARABLE scene of proper pants-wetting pregnant implied threat (those who know will already know), all while making us really THINK thanks to a particularly shrewd and fiendishly subversive screenplay, and even offering up moments of incongruous aching beauty in the midst of all the chaos, much as he did on Annihilation.  Ultimately this is a perfect demonstration of a master filmmaker reaching the very height of his powers, final confirmation, if it was even NEEDED any more, that Garland is one of the most original and challenging cinematic storytellers out there right now.
1.  DUNE, PART TWO – As if there was ever any doubt, after the already amazing first part made its KILLER debut back in late 2021 … no, it was a foregone conclusion that the second half of writer-director Denis Villeneuve’s immensely ambitious adaptation of one of his very favourite books OF ALL TIME, Frank Herbert’s genuine game-changer space opera Dune, would be JUST as incredible as the first, and it thrills me no end that that entirely proved to be the case.  After all, this is also MY favourite book of all time, if they’d f£$%ed it up I would have been more heartbroken than I could possibly imagine, so Villeneuve and co have made me a VERY HAPPY BUNNY INDEED.  Picking up RIGHT where the first film left off, we return to the desert world of Arrakis almost ten centuries into the future, with young Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet), now the Duke of an all-but-eradicated Galactic noble House, and his mother, the Bene Gesserit holy woman Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), are forced to hide among the desert tribes of the Fremen, hatching a desperate plan to take revenge on the monstrous Harkonnens and seize control of the planet, its massively lucrative trade in the obscenely valuable spice Melange, and, through it, the Galactic Empire in its entirety.  To do so, Paul must use his growing prescient abilities to convince the Fremen that he is the Kwisatz Haderach, their prophesied messiah, but he is keenly aware that this means walking a deadly knife’s edge in order to prevent triggering an immensely bloody Holy War that will burn half of the known Universe … once again, Chalamet and Ferguson are the beating heart of the story, both acquitting themselves admirably throughout as they perfectly encapsulate the myriad complexities of their characters, but this time round they’re finally joined by Zendaya, barely glimpsed in the first film but now brought front and centre as the new emotional CRUX of the film in the role of Chani, the free-spirited and stubborn Fremen warrior Paul falls in love with as he learns to become a true denizen of Arrakis; other old faces return, meanwhile, with Josh Brolin bringing a roguish twinkle and a welcome sense of humour to proceedings as the exiled Atreides warmaster Gurney Halleck, and Stellan Skarsgård once again chills our blood as the repellent Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.  More newcomers make their presence felt throughout, however, with Florence Pugh particularly standing out as Princess Irulan, the fiercely intelligent daughter of the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken, nowhere NEAR the bum note some have made him out to be), although the true shining star among the new cast (beside Zendaya, at least) is Austin Butler (Elvis), enthusiastically sinking his teeth deep into the meaty role of the Baron’s viciously sadistic sociopathic nephew Feyd Rautha.  Once again Villeneuve has done his dream project justice in EVERY conceivable aspect, continuing to pay truly REVERENT respect to the source material as he makes Herbert’s incredibly rich universe live and breathe on the screen, the peerless production and costume design, visual effects and cinematography never hitting a single off-note in any scene, while the screenplay perfectly translates the weighty themes, compelling narrative and shocking twists into a deeply involving cinematic tour-de-force that keeps you invested throughout its seemingly brisk and pacy run-time (this may be close to THREE HOURS LONG but it sure doesn’t FEEL like it), enthusiastically propelled along by another MASTERPIECE score from fellow Dune superfan Hans Zimmer.  This is a truly MASSIVE cinematic event that leaves you awed by the experience while also drumming some EXTREMELY weighty ideas and themes into you, as well as perfectly setting up the inevitable continuation when Villeneuve gets his already in-development adaptation of the next book in the series, Dune Messiah, off the ground.  I’m definitely looking forward to that, and I know I’m not alone …

EXPOSICIONS I ACTIVITATS EXPOSICIONS
Jordi Colomer.
Future!

Miss that period from like the 1990s to the mid 2000s where every year there'd be two high-profile films with the exact same premise. Like, not a rip-off made after the fact, but two or more similar films made and released around the same time, with one clearly made to counter the other, but with it often unclear which was the original or if there was an original or just cinematic convergent evolution
Like, you had 1997's two volcano movies, Dante's Peak and Volcano, with the former taking a much more serious/accurate-ish tone than the other, a pattern repeated by 1998's asteroid movies Armageddon and Deep Impact. 1997 also had two movies where one guy on a hijacked plane must take it back (Air Force One & Con Air) and two movies about the youth of the 14th Dalai Lama (Kundun and Seven Years in Tibet). Why? Who knows! 1995 had two talking pig movies, Gordy and Babe, but in that case Gordy was actually made in 1994 and dumped into theaters to cash in on Babe.
The 2000s brought us 2006, the year of two magician movies (The Illusionist & The Prestige), two Truman Capote-writes-In Cold Blood movies (Capote & Infamous), and two classic Hollywood noirs based on infamous deaths movies (The Black Dahlia & Hollywoodland). And then, the trend seemed to die off, with maybe the last gasp 2009's "metaphor aliens revolt" duology of Avatar & District 9.
Sometimes this clearly represented a broader trend. EDtv was The Truman Show but worse, but there was a big wave of "reality is not what it seems" movies of the late 90s, from Dark City to those two to The Matrix, The Thirteenth Floor, and eXistenZ. Something was going on there
This was big in animation and for a while Dreamworks would make a copy of Disney/Pixar's next film out of spite. You had the two ant movies of 1998, A Bug's Life & Antz, the two Mesoamerican comedies of 2000, The Emperor's New Groove & The Road to El Dorado, the two fish movies of 2003-2004, Finding Nemo & Shark Tale. Then there's the absolute golden age of this trend, the "these two endangered animals MUST FUCK" genre of 2010-2011, where Alpha and Omega and Rio proved strong enough to kill off Pixar's endangered animal fuck fest movie, Newt.
The peak moment for this whole thing, though, was March 1990, where two films about a dance craze called the Lambada (in the US, it was a mostly manufactured attempt at a craze, and by then people were already questioning its true reach; it was a huge hit in Europe but never hit the top 40 in America - or even the top 20 dance songs) came out on the same day
