Rewatching BBC Merlin because I still haven't finished it, and it really hard for me not to read this show as gay. Like theres a lot moments where Merlins magic is easily read as a metaphor for queerness. Then theres the literal gayness between Arthur and Merlin. Friends can absolutely be as dedicated and loyal as those two, and the life saving doesn't count for much, because both of them are just Like Thattm, but the language around them, verbal, physical, and storytelling-wise, is very hard to read as platonic. I barely have to read into the text to get this. Even Uther says lines to Merlin that sound like "you like Arthur." I dont think that's what he meant, because I think if it was brought up he would be homophobic, but if he'd said those lines to Gwen, that absolutely would be how he meant them.

And I'm still rewatching season one, I haven't even got to Arthur saying he want to run off to have a farm with Merlin
