“… Can I hold your hand?”

Langa felt his heart skip a beat. Was there a word for feeling both familiarity and distance at the same time?

“… Sure.”

Reki grabbed his hand, and the uneasiness that was suffocating him faded away in the form of a breath into the frigid mountain air. It had been a year and a half since Langa returned to Canada for university, and it had been equally long since they held hands, as a couple.

The chairlift wouldn’t go any faster, and the early morning crispiness of the Canadian heights was starting to get to someone born and raised in Okinawa, not to mention that he was still a bit drowsy from having to battle the jet lag yesterday.

“I can see why Okinawa was tough for you at first,” spoke Reki, his head turned to stare off into the distant ridges.

“Oh, yeah.” Langa, too, was starting to feel more relaxed, but he couldn’t help but think back to how quiet they both got after a few laughs on the chairlift — man, when will this ride end? — and he knew fully well why.

Just before their high school graduation, a few months after mutual pining finally turned into successful confessions, Langa told Reki about him going back to Canada again. It was a tough decision for him, of course, considering the fact that Reki had already chosen to enroll in the local art university. It didn’t sink in very well at first that they were going to be separated, but with the new chapter of their lives almost on their doorsteps, they hardly had the time to talk about it.

And they fought. It came unexpected like a storm, and it was at S too, even. They fought so hard that Joe and Cherry had to step in.

Reki didn’t talk to him after the fight, not even a text. They didn’t make up afterwards either; they didn’t know how. They stayed in this odd “it’s complicated” state until August came, where Reki showed up at the airport to see him off. It took Langa by surprise because they hadn’t spoken in weeks.

Even after Langa began his new life as a university student, they only contacted through messages, only barely enough to know that the other was fine, and the most they ever talked was a month ago, when Reki, out of the blue, said that he wanted to visit Canada for the holidays.

“Y’know…” The sound of Reki’s voice pierced the air, skidding Langa’s train of thought to a stop.

Langa didn’t know why he closed his eyes. It was as if his body was afraid of what Reki was about to say, and his heart began racing in a matter of moments. Lucky for him, his state of panicking didn’t last. Reki managed to finish his sentence. "This place is amazing.”

“Oh, this resort? Yeah, I used to practice here when I was little-”

“No, Langa,” he laughed, and a year’s time melted away just like that. “I mean Canada. Your home. I know why you had to come back now.” He squeezed Langa’s hand, so gently that it was barely noticeable through the gloves they had on, as if to utter a silent apology.

And it was at this very moment that Langa finally understood. They were alright.

He helped Reki off the chairlift; he got off better than Langa expected a first-timer would with a board stuck to their foot.

As they peered down the slope, a sheepish smile found its way onto Langa’s face. “I can hold your hand if you’re scared,” he joked, reaching out a hand.

It took Reki a while, but then he laughed.

“I’ll be fine!”
