The strange life of Larry Bader

On May 15, 1957 the 30 year old Larry Bader rented a boat at the Rocky River near Cleveland that afternoon, and was warned about an upcoming storm. The deteriorating weather didn’t seem to faze Bader – at 4:30p.m. he shoved off in the rented motor boat.

The storm came up three hours later. The next morning, Bader’s boat was found on the rocks at Perkins Beach. Bader was not in it. The Coast Guard said the lake had been so rough no man could have survived overboard.

Four days later, a fascinating, debonair and well-dressed man entered the Roundtable Bar on the corner of 19th and Harney Streets in Omaha, Nebraska. He gave his name as John “Fritz” Johnson. He became a radio station announcer, sports director of a television station, and one of the best known, best liked and most flamboyant personalities in Omaha.

He told friends and acquaintances that he took up archery “to strengthen his back muscles after an injury”. With his background of hunting in Ohio, it is no surprise that he won the Nebraska state championship. Bader enthralled his friends with vivid stories of a boyhood in a Boston orphanage and 13 years in the Navy. He kept tropical fish — especially the Siamese fighting variety, the kind that devour each other. He wore an eyepatch after surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from his left eye, which added to his large than life character.

Meanwhile, Larry Bader was declared legally dead in an Akron court in 1960. By this time Mary lou Bader (his wife) had settled down to the business of trying to rear four children alone.

In 1964 a Nebraska archery firm sent Bader to a sports show at Chicago’s McCormick Place to show off its equipment. One of the visitors at the show was from Akron, and he did a double take when he saw the Nebraska archery champion. He had, he was sure, just seen a dead ringer for the missing Larry Bader. The man called Bader’s brothers from Akron. They flew into Chicago, took a look at Fritz and said he was their long lost brother. Johnson’s fingerprints were sent to the FBI, who compared them with the fingerprints Bader gave when he joined the US navy as an 18 year old – they matched. Johnson claimed to have no memory of his life as Lawrence Bader, probably due to the eye surgery.

So what was the real story behind the disappearance of Lawrence Bader and the appearance of John Johnson? Did Bader decide he was trapped in the life he was leading and saw only one way out – fake his own death and set up a new life somewhere else? Or was Bader suffering from dissociative amnesia, a rare condition where a person has no memory of their life owing to trauma or stress. In a dissociative fugue state, they have an urge to travel and may invent a new personality, settling in a new area with no recollection of how they got there.

If you had to headcanon the aot charas from states, where would they be from and why [are you basing it off their vibe/ or canon personalities?]

Okay some of them actually stumped me for a bit, but here we go!! I mostly went with ~vibe~ from staring at a Map of the US!!

Levi: He strikes me as a northern city boy, braving tough streets and dreary weather. I’d say he’d be a New Yorker or maybe from Illinois! Could even be New Jersey! Somewhere with rough streets and gangs! Imagine him with a cute accent!!

Erwin: A sun-kissed country boy! Not too far from a bigger city, but he definitely grew up around farms! I don’t think he’d be too far south, but definitely spent most of his youth bailing hay at one of the farms for some extra cash! That’s how he’s so beefy!! I’d say he’s either from Missouri or one of the Virginias!!

Hange: This one’s difficult, but I picture them as a country bumpkin from the Deep South, maybe Florida, but they move to California as soon as they’re old enough to be independent!! Basically running away from home!! They want a new experience!! And people are so much more accepting there!!

Eren, Armin, Mikasa: These three grew up together, so I have to do them as a group!! I picture them growing up in a city, but not somewhere nearly as rough as Levi. Somewhere with nice suburbs, a good school district and a community library!! But also somewhere with forests and hills to adventure in!! I’d say somewhere in Pennsylvania!! (Also so Armin can not have seen the ocean, but desperately want to)

Connie: FLORIDA!! Some of the most hilarious people I’ve ever met have been from Florida!! He definitely grew up near the coast taunting those weird little lizards that are everywhere!

Sasha: You know she’s a country girl!! Grew up on a farm, no where near a big city! I’d say Nebraska!! She strikes me as a farm girl, but also the type to have dealt with hard winters!

Jean: He pretends to be a big city boy, but he actually grew up in the middle of nowhere. It wasn’t really farm lands, just emptiness and his tiny little home town. I’d say Michigan!!

Reiner: For some reason I’m picturing him somewhere far north, where it gets really cold during the winter. He’s so sturdy he’s completely resilient to the cold weather!! I’d say Maine or Vermont!

Zeke: He grew up in a big city for sure, but somewhere not far from the coast!! I picture him as some-what of a warm weather boy, so maybe one of the Carolinas?

Miche: Same as Erwin!! The farm he worked on was owned by Miche’s family so they became friends!!

Onyonkapon: I want to hear him with a cute Mississippi accent so bad, so I’m saying there for only that reason!!

Moblit: California!!! They meet Hange there!! He’s socially anxious so he spends a lot of time at the beach, casually drawing people as they pass and the shifting environment!! He can surf!!

Gabi and Falco (and Colt): These two grew up together too!! Somewhere with nicer suburbs and near a relatively large city, but they live more on the outskirts!! Somewhere relatively close to Reiner too! I’d say Massachusetts!!

In the 1930s, the sociology department at the University of Chicago documented extensively a working-class, youth-oriented gay culture thriving in the city's Near North Side. Drawing on these studies, scholar David K. Johnson identified the portion of Michigan Avenue stretching from the Chicago River north to the Oak Street Beach as the axis of the gay community of the 1930s, with Thompson's, an inexpensive eatery at the corner of Michigan and Ohio that stayed open until late, cited as one of the most popular homosexual destinations. State Street in front of Marshall Field's was another "notorious gay cruising area." The most popular gay bar, Waldman's at 164 North Michigan, opened around 1935 and was famous for its two grand pianos visible through picture windows. Johnson's research unearthed other interesting discoveries. The terms "coming out" and "gay" were already in use in the 1930s. The haunts of gay men were "common knowledge to a wide segment of the city," including Chicago Renaissance writers such as Sherwood Anderson, James T. Farrell, and Floyd Dell, who portrayed these locales in their fiction. A number of gay-themed novels that appeared in the early 1930s, including Twilight Men, Strange Brother, and A Scarlet Pansy, were carried by Chicago's commercial rental libraries in working class neighborhoods and worn out from heavy circulation. The coalescing of a gay community in Chicago is documented even from before the end of the nineteenth century, and a 1908 book pointed out the city's clubs, steam baths, and restaurants with "homosexual atmospheres." By the 1920s, the Near North Side had become home to thousands of single people "living outside traditional social conventions, including many of the city's aspiring artists and writers." At the tail end of the 1920s, Variety would carry a front page story about the "pansy craze" sweeping across Chicago (also a phenomenon in other major cities), which by then had thirty-five gay tearooms in the Near North Side alone, all decorated with fey details.

I meet with friends every Tuesday at a coffee shop and we share stories. This last week I was asked if I went surfing everyday when I lived in San Diego? I admitted I had to show up for high school, and I had a job after school, but anytime I wasn’t working or in school and it wasn’t raining, I’d be at South Ocean Beach, surfing the left break off the pier. I knew it wouldn’t last forever, but it was the pattern/habit I enjoyed. Ever since I saw the photograph by Cedric Wright of @anseladams on the roof of his station wagon, or Dorothea Lange on the roof of her car by Rondal Partrige @imogen.cunningham.trust I’ve carried a ladder in my van. Another habit. I also tend to have at least two cameras with me and in 2008 after picking up @vickiknits at a fiber/knitting convention in Columbus, saw the mural on the side of a building that was just being completed. We stopped and I asked Jeremy if he minded sitting for me, and I made these two photos; one with the SWC and the other with the 500c and portrait lens. Before digital I used color film too, but like surfing, I think that pattern has changed. I do still carry more than one camera, and my ladder is in the van.
