❇ Note: I saw people commenting for a part 2 so here it is! unfortunately, there is no fluff in here to be found but I hope yall enjoy anyways <3

There are some things you learn after a long life, one of which is that everything wilts in the end. Zhongli knows that all too well. Everything will wilt and die in its own time, just like the lone glaze lily on his hand.

The man carefully holds the lily, fearful that it will break even more. It was a delicate little thing, withering petals slowly turning brown, then black, and eventually a corpse. He hadn't taken care of the flower in a long time, preferring to leave it in his room to wilt on its own. He couldn’t find himself nursing it back to health and now it withers. He could simply replace the flower with a fresher one, but he doesn't. It was strange for him to grieve for a small thing, for a dying flower, but in his own ways, he still mourns for it.

A creak from the door interrupts him, and a figure stands at the door frame with hands still holding the door knob, and hesitance to step inside.

“[Name], my dear, you’re here,” He calls out to you when he stands from his sitting position, “I’m glad you’ve returned, I was worried you would never come back—”

“—I just came to get my things. I don’t plan to stay long.” You could've sworn a flash of pain appeared in his eyes but you don’t have the time to dwell on it.

The whole time it was uncomfortably quiet. The only sounds you could hear were your shuffling and footsteps as you gathered your things. Finally, you entered your once shared bedroom, taking the last of your belongings, and soon it would look like you’ve never even placed an imprint of yourself in this bedroom.

Like you’ve never been there in the first place.

An uneasy pause. Zhongli can’t see your eyes, but he can still feel the slight tremor in your voice as you say “Thank you for your hospitality.”

No doubt that your emotions aren’t quite at rest just yet, the wound of that day still fresh. It has been eating up on you the past few days you’ve left the house, the unnerving thought that you were hardly in his mind, and that you were simply an easy replacement for a position someone else holds in his heart; You just happened to be the nearest substitute.

“You’re leaving already?” You despise the worry in his voice, you felt like he was mocking you, and continuously tugging on the edges of your heart, hoping that you’d look at him and falter.

“I don’t have any more reason to prolong my stay here, don’t I? I have nothing here,” The truth spilling with every word you say. You face him straight in the eyes, you do not falter like you expected, you were much braver than him just by choosing to look at him.

Your gaze swallows him whole and Zhongli has to swallow the lump in his throat. He feels your stare, you look at his eyes, then the conquered expression on his face, and then lastly your eyes land on the glaze lily he was still holding.

This was stupid, you thought. Zhongli despite his godly status and might is a coward—a coward who could not speak what was in his mind, he could not give any explanations, nor any apologies. He was usually a man with honor, wisdom, and just the right words to say but apparently, it seems like he has no words for you. You start to think he might’ve thought you didn’t deserve any.

You walk to the door and your hand touches the door knob one last time, “I will be leaving now. I hope all the best for you Zhongli.”

You wanted him to beg you to stay, you wanted him to kneel on his knees and apologize, you wanted him to shed at least just one tear upon the thought you’d leave him. But he doesn’t, though that did not mean he was going to stand idly by, so he grabs your wrist one last time.

“I hope you find what you deserve, someone who would long for you, and hold you with no other reason but just the need to hold you,” he whispers, almost inaudible. His grip tightens around your wrist, he doesn’t let go of your hand until you’re out the door, and the door closed behind you.

Another thing he learned after a long life was that when things fade, you would have to let go. But he doesn’t want to.

And he’d only hope you don’t notice the glaze lily he quickly slipped inside your pocket when you left to the door.

Backstory: Mave is the second oldest of five siblings born to a mother who had an affair and a father who cared more for keeping up appearances than he did his family. He was assigned to be the Royal Kight/Advisor to the future King of Spades whom he met when they were both quite young. They became fast friends, connecting in a way that neither of them had experienced before, and were practically inseperable. That is- until Mave's half-brother accidentally showed his face in front of the prince. The prince and his new friend began to grow even closer than he had with Mave. Mave was starting to get a little jealous... But no matter! They were both his friends, and he and the prince were still extremely close. Nothing could change that.

One day, the prince and Mave's half-brother were discovered by the Kaard family. Mave was faced with a tough decision: Stand up to his father, or watch his half-brother and the prince get punished for something so natural as being friends. Steeling all his nerves and summoning his courage, he defied his father and watched him angrily storm away alongside his older brother. Mave and his half-brother quickly moved in with the prince so that they wouldn't be forced to face their father's wrath, and all was well for the next few years...

Until war broke out, the prince's parents both perished, and they were all banished far away. They made the best of things even though the situation was dark, and they remained as close as ever. Though... Mave could never truly shake the pit in his stomach- the jealousy he felt over the prince's close relationship with his half-brother. It had slowly festered ever since they were kids, but he tried not to let it show. It only reared its ugly head when he was alone in his room- sometimes in fits of rage, and other times fits of crying.

One day, during one of his episodes, without warning he was sucked out of reality and plunged headfirst into darkness. It surrounded him- engulfed him -and he was terrified. A large shadow, bigger than anything he could have ever imagined, towered over him. Its imposing form reached into his very mind and the whispers began. It started off aggressive, loud, overstimulating. It made Mave want to escape, to run, to get away, to get home- but then...

Then, the whispers started to sound more sweet. It planted tantalizing thoughts into his head, pandered to his insecurities, preyed upon his fragile mind. It hooked onto his feelings of jealousy and twisted them into something malicious- something evil.

From that day forward, Mave became an overly confident monster who would go through anyone to get his way. He didn't care who he hurt as long as he was in control- as long as he was important.
