Maybe it was a bloom of algae in the tidal estuary carried on the rain wet wind, or perhaps it was the sunscreen and sweat on a passing jogger that completed the picture— that formed the final element in the password the sensory key that unlocked this capsule of my past. 
And I know it won’t work again. Even if I could bottle the idiosyncratic mix of hydrocarbons and volatiles the seal on that bubble of memory is broken and rewritten— it’s only a story now about what I think I remember.

I wonder if I can yet strive to control, to exploit this sensory ability. Can I name moment in my present with a perfume password? And, like a sommelier of time & past selves, someday uncork a fragment of the past at will? Is the vivid nature of such memories evidence that they correctly record the past? Or is it a trick of the mind, of emotion?
I smile thinking of a future me arrested, astonished by this memory of being but 40 and remembering imagining remembering future memories.

This morning I realized I can actually smell the coffee beans in the jar and the unlit incense by my bed without picking them up and making a conscious effort.

Tea also tastes and smells more like it's supposed to - I've been completely unable to detect some of the molecules that make up sencha's scent for more than a year now, but for maybe 5 seconds today I could smell what I think of as "the sencha smell" again. I don't know if I'm finally starting to recover from the COVID damage, that it's been a couple months since I used a CBD/D8 vape, or if it's just that allergy season's ending.
