I started Ocean Likes Me this afternoon and I'm on episode 3. I was skeptical at first, but then two things happened: Holland showed up and I let go of my need for logic. Now I'm embracing this charming little fairy tale world of nonsense and plot contrivances.

Holland and his character really do make the show.

hi there!! welcome to the fandom! 💜

here are some shows that didn't have a big audience and/or that I think were underrated:

Love Stage!! (one of my personal highlights this year. It didn't get much attention, mostly because it wasn't released internationally then. However it is now so I highly recommend.)

Ocean Likes Me (also one of my highlights. it didn't get the best reviews but I thought it was lovely)

55:15 Never Too Late (I wouldn't call this a bl since the plot was only a side story but the show is literally so good. It tells very touching stories and has a good message. Also the bl sideplot is very well done imo.)

Club Friday The Series Season 8: True Love…or Confusion (this one's a bit older and I discovered it about 2 years ago but it's so good. Highly recommend as well.)

Fujoshi, Ukkari Gei ni Kokuru (this one is absolutely amazing. I never saw anyone talk about it but it's a masterpiece imo. The story is heavy so don't expect anything lighthearted lol. But the characters as well as the writing and acting are outstanding.)

Love Love You (this never had an audience either but I loved it. It was hilarious.)

My Mate Match (this one's an adorable little gem. It's a short chamber play-type drama and I love the story, also the performance of the 3 mains is 10000x better than in gen y lol. highly recommend!!)

My Dear Loser: Edge of 17 (this one has a bl sidestory which is very cute. The main story is also very nice imo.)

So yeah these are my picks, all of which can be watched on Dramacool 😉

2022 BL ROUNDUP PART 2

Hey y'all, I've seen everyone doing their top 22, 20, 15, 10, and 5 BLs of the year and I didn't want to do a ranking! I just want to do a quick rundown of everything I watched and how I feel about it now! This is gonna be multiple posts! But I'll post them all at the same time.

BL Series I've watched from South Korea in 2022

Kissable Lips. I loved the series. Yea it had a sad ending, but it was the only Vampire BL I've ever seen. I think it suffered from the curse of S. Korea's standard BL runtime. If it were longer I think it would've been better and more fleshed out. Jiwoong and Seobin had excellent chemistry and even though the ending was sad, I enjoyed the overall tone of the series. True love turned out to be very selfless and partially self destructing.

Semantic Error. Came out at the beginning of the year and still one of the highest ranking Korean BLs of 2022. It was the standard opposites-attract-enemies-to-lovers trope main pairing but it didn't feel cliche. The digital components added to the aesthetics made it feel almost interactive and I loved all the characters. Male kpop idols play both leads and their chemistry was INSANE! They've been winning awards for the series all year.

First Love Again. It was an interesting take on soulmates and reincarnation. 300 years of waiting for your girl to return only for her to be born male and also let's throw in a sister that has the same face of the woman from the past. I think overall I enjoyed the series, the mains did have great chemistry, but one of them was ridiculously mean to the other while he figured out his crisis of suddenly being in love with a man.

Blueming. 10/10. The best Korean BL I've watched all year. It was a coming of age type of story. It was one of the few series I've seen that actually highlights the major the kids were studying in uni. The mains had superb chemistry and the communication between them felt refreshing. It wasn't over the top, it was just a very lowkey and laid back romance.

Cherry Blossoms After Winter. It was really interesting. The bullying in the series was insane and made me feel very violent towards high school kids. There was also the hint of a step-brother sort of vibe but it was clear that the mains never felt like "brothers" even though they were raised together in the same household. It was just a very interesting take on how childhood trauma can manifest into adulthood and also how bad bullying can get for people and also how to approach being in love with someone you've known your entire life.

Ocean Likes Me. It was cute. Not the best and not the worst. Holland made his debut with the series and I really loved his snappy and flamboyant character. I think he and Gi Chan had great chemistry, but the plot was a little 'meh'. I think if the series were longer it would've been better and more memorable.

To My Star 2. The reviews have been mixed for this series and I get it, but I personally enjoyed it. The angst was very angsty. They had me crying. It was a great depiction of how people act after they breakup but are still very much in love with each other. One likes to put distance between them and the other refuses to go away without a real explanation. I think people thought Ji Woo's character was ruined, but I think the way he acted was very much in character. I think people were expecting honeymoon but we got heartbreak lol. I heard a s3 has been discussed.

Roommates of Poongduck 304. Jiwoong and Seobin's 2nd chance at main leads together. It was completely different from their first series. The chemistry was still amazing, but this series was more comedy and conflict than anything else. Highkey didn't even care about the plot (it was a good plot though), I was vibing on chemistry alone with this series. Jiwoong and Seobin are just magical together.

Vice Versa The series could have easily gone wrong with the cliché character tropes. Puen being the rich, famous, handsome, go-getter bad boy & Talay being a struggling professional, socially awkward, ball of sunshine who fixes the bad boy.

While the characters easily fit into the tropes, it's the little details that make them more realistic & non-stereotypical.

Puen is everything like the bad boy, except he isn't. He is polite, likeable, hard-working & overall a sweet guy. He should have slipped into a negative spiral after losing his fame overnight & turning into a struggling scriptwriter.

Ironically, it's not the success that gets to his head but the absence of it. He was probably overworked & lonely in real life. He must have had a misconception that life without fame was going to be easy. He goes haywire when he turns into Pakorn, an average boy with no eyes on him. However, he receives Talay's criticism well. He owns up to his wrongdoings & tries to fix them. He learns that this life is his chance to have all the friendships & love he yearned for, so he must handle it with care.

Talay is struggling with job interviews & awkward around new people. But he is not lonely, he has a fairly active social life. He is passionate & workaholic. He doesn't seem like a pessimist, but he doesn't seem like the eternal optimist who believes in fairytale endings either.

Talay is KNOWS the right time to have fun. Instead of living a rich spoilt brat life like Tess, he chooses to be responsible & fix the body owner's life.

He is helpful, responsible & sensitive towards others feelings. At the same time he is not the kind who will shy away from tough conversations. So even if Puen melts from seeing Talay being all goofy & child like, Talay is anything but unicorns & rainbows. Both the leads come with their own sets of strengths & weaknesses.

What is interesting about their romance is that both of them claim to have never dated. And it's surprising that Puen is the one who believes in love despite being in a position where he must have encountered people after his wealth, fame & looks. Meanwhile Talay is the cynical one.

Puen courageously opens his heart. Despite being the go-getter who flirts aggressively, he is extremely gentle. He is trying to understand Talay & help him tear down his walls instead of intruding.

On the other hand Talay is also learning that love does not feel demanding to the one who is experiencing it. He is gradually making space for Puen in his life, developing feelings & attachment while struggling to accept it.

Instead of healing each other, the two are embarking on a journey of understanding each other, following their hearts and coping with their own emotional baggage to prevent their insecurities hurting the other person. (Lol at least I hope so considering the progress until Ep 3 🥲🥲🥲🥲) Because we saw Talay making Puen realise that he can't escape hardwork in any life & Puen trying to make Talay come to a conclusion that love is not supposed to hurt or distract you.
