Whumptober 2023 Day 11: “All the lights going dark and my hope’s destroyed.” Animal Trap | Captivity | "No one will find you." Star Wars: The Old Republic | V'ehsz Legacy Next Gen Warnings: Major Character Injury Characters: Luci Sept (Bounty Hunter, she/any, Cathar/Sith Pureblood)

Sure, the Mando clan camped out nearby had warned her with no small level of disgust of the traps littering the forest beyond (cowardly, they called them; a true hunter goes after their prey directly, after all). Most of them were old, ones that previous residents had forgotten about when they picked up camp and left for new hunting grounds. Most of the ones she stumbled across didn’t even work, joints rusted and teeth worn away by time to make them useless.

So she let her guard down.

The first one she triggered had her yelping as she twisted away from it, barely pulling her tail out of the way before it could be chomped down on in the jaw-like trap. She felt her face flush as she noticed how it had fluffed up as it curled around her legs; a few calming breaths had the fur laying flat again, fortunately.

Cursing to herself, Luci shook her head, checked and re-checked that her rifle was ready, and continued on.

Her boots carefully stepped around dead leaves to avoid their crunching, her eyes watching the path ahead.

Her target was a murderer; he’d slipped up, made his presence known, and finally gotten himself linked to a number of kills over the last year. He was Mikkian, which Luci didn’t know as much about as she’d have liked given she’d decided to try fulfilling the contract. Still, he was just a person, and if she could get the drop on him one well-placed shot from her rifle should be enough. She’d dealt with far worse targets.

He’d fled into the forest when another bounty hunter screwed up and spooked him; Luci had been the only one to remain on the trail thanks to her sensitive ears (and also in no small part thanks to her mild Force-sensitivity) that the other hunters had all lacked.

The too-tall trees blocked out the fading light of day, but she didn’t pay it any mind.

The second she triggered had her swearing as she lunged away from the cord that would have suspended her by the foot, far up in the tree it was attached to, had it connected. The branch it was connected from proceeded to snap; the tree turned out to be dead, and that little bit of force was all it took for the branch that had likely been looking for an excuse for years to finally fall off.

Idiots, she thought. Who would leave traps like these out for just anyone to stumble into, or for an animal to get caught and rot when it was never retrieved. What a waste.

Third… Well, that turned out to be her last strike, it would seem.

All she could do was gasp as the ground collapsed from under her in a flurry of leaves to send her down—down—down.

When she hit the ground at the bottom of the pit, she could only groan and wince at the sharp pain in her shoulder and thigh and the ringing of her ears as her head smacked against the ground.

A spike pit, her mind offered dazedly, meant for large predators.

...And she’d just gotten herself impaled falling into it.

She lifted one arm—the one she didn’t feel a metal spike driving through the shoulder of—and felt blindly for her leg (caught the edge of one, would need stitches, but not trapped), then her shoulder (definitely wouldn’t be getting up without any help, barely missed her collarbone, keeping her pinned in place, hurts). From the corner of her eye she could see another spike just to the right of her head; she’d only just missed taking it through the skull.

Luci swallowed, whined low in her throat, and fumbled for her holo.

Dad and Papa—they could help her. They…they were still in the system, right? They had been when she’d last spoken to them two days ago.

She could only hope that they were.

History

Born on Nar Shaddaa as older sister to her sibling Jeva, the two had a rough life from the start. Their parents were both spice dealers, and stiffed a Hutt one too many times. Bounty hunters were sent to retrieve the family; when their parents defended themselves and a firefight broke out, Jessi grabbed her sibling and took off into the alley. When they later went back to their home, their parents and one of the hunters were dead inside.

From that point on, Jessi scrounged for scraps for the both of them while keeping them tucked away in forgotten alleyways. A few years of that passed before they encountered a Sith Pureblood bouncer, K'hedif, who offered them some food. K'hedif would continue to bring them food and changes of clothes for the next few weeks, until finally offering to pay for a hotel room for them when they were no longer timid of him.

When K'hedif left the planet, having finally saved up enough credits for a shuttle, he again gave the siblings an offer: Join him and get off Nar Shaddaa. Jeva was still young at the time, Jessi accepted the offer and they found themselves adopted by the man. He job-hopped a lot, taking the siblings with him whenever he did, until finally settling with an old spacer.

He had that job a while, before his employer was killed by Twin Suns gangsters. Jessi tucked her sibling into a closet on the ship and grabbed a spare blaster, positioning herself at the entrance to protect Jeva until K'hedif came for the two. Another spacer named Jen had stepped in just in time to save K'hedif and the siblings, and hesitantly offered a job. Jessi would later learn that it was only so she and Jeva would have a roof over their heads, and that Jen hadn't originally wanted K'hedif on his ship because he was Sith.

While Jeva was raised by the Sept crew, Jessi was hesitant to put too much trust into them and remained pretty independent despite her young age. It would take nearly three years before she even started calling Jen and Kitty her dads. When they adopted Sith apprentice Liakige onto the crew, Jessi grew fond of them pretty quickly; they were a lot closer to Jessi's age than her sibling, so when Ki became more comfortable with the crew, the two of them developed a close bond.

She'd always wanted to be like Kitty - a healer, a medic, whatever she could do - so took an interest in the Alliance as she got old enough for military. The life of a smuggler just wasn't for her. So, though she loved her family dearly, she started getting in touch with the Alliance with various questions on their military program.

With Ki at her side, Jessi decides to eventually leave the Star Hopper and join the Alliance. Jessi became a cadet training as a combat medic, while Ki began training in the newly formed Paladin Order.

Upon graduating from her training, Jessi was recruited to Inferno Squad as its medic - a new squad tasked with protecting rebuilding efforts on various planets. It was when the squad was on Taris that Jessi was mauled by a territorial nexu; it resulted in the loss of an eye. ...As well as finally earning her a military nickname that would soon become her call sign: "Nexu Bait." She was irritable with the name at first, but grew quite fond of it and would laugh about it over the years.

Inferno Squad uncovered a plot on the Commander's life purely by accident, and when Terrin decided to look at them with a little more scrutiny than she had previously, she realized she was holding the team back with their current jobs. They were tasked to train under Alliance Intelligence for a while, and became a subterfuge squad; their job became to track down traitors and various assassination and ambush plots before they could happen. It was around this time that Jessi was made the second-in-command of the squad, after the previous was removed due to not fitting with the restructuring.

Inferno Squad ended up the sole reason that, many years later, the Alliance wasn't totally wiped out when the Empire struck in an attempt to remove a thorn from its side. Had it not been for the squad, their losses would have been far greater.

Jessi readily followed when the Alliance disappeared into unknown space to avoid being wiped out completely. Though she would eventually leave the squad, she'd remain part of Odessa's security force, accompanying teams out into the wilderness as the Alliance slowly worked on building up a city...

in character questions 1.) What did you want to do with your life when you were younger? What would the child version of yourself think about the path you paved for yourself?

At the earliest age, I wanted to be a good Ohio wife and mother above all else. I wanted a career, too, but I never made that the primary part of my future dreams. After becoming pregnant in my teens I reassessed my life and my dreams. I decided I wanted to get out of Ohio. My career goals developed in college - I grew interested in management and entrepreneurship. After paying my dues as an analyst, in retail and finally in events management, I grew my rolodex until I felt comfortable taking the plunge and starting my own events firm. I think the child-me would be in awe of what I do - there are a lot of fancy society events and those would be so delightful for Lucy Fabray to see. She would be happy to take the path I’ve paved.

2.) What is your proudest accomplishment? Don’t be afraid to talk about what it took to achieve it and how you feel about it as well. Getting into Yale. The effort and emotional wherewithal needed to do what it took, in the emotional state I was in, was huge for me. Also, maintaining a relationship with my birth-daughter Beth’s mom, and creating a unique but real relationship with Beth.

3.) If you could do anything you wanted for one whole day, what would it be and why?

Go out on a sailboat, window-shop in Paris, eat in Italy, sing with my high school and college show choir friends. Have an amazing kiss with someone amazing.

where are they now? Quinn and Puck broke up after the challenge of long distance, with him in the military and her in Yale. She still has a special place in her heart for him and they are still in touch. She provides him with updates on Beth.

Quinn left the tidy expectations of her father only to create ones of her own for herself. She efficiently has checked all the boxes she’s wanted: career, friendship. She has never dated anyone seriously after Puck. She is very close with her friends and has dated several men but she has trouble getting very close to them. She usually breaks it off when she hits her wall, and is frustrated with herself as a result.

She is considering a move to LA to shake things up, but it’s kind of terrifying - not that she’d tell many people that.

Quinn’s mom has been unevenly managing generalized anxiety disorder back in Lima - Quinn wonders if she should move back to her hometown, instead.

Wanted connections: Close friendships with Santana and Brittany if we get a Brittany Close friendship with Sam Friend or Close friend of Sebastian - their parents want them to marry Close friendship with a female OC, maybe they were besties at Yale Close friendship with a male OC

Liakige is genderfluid

Jeva is nonbinary

Luci doesn't know for sure, but thinks she may be agender

there's Kitty himself, who's a trans man

and his biological kid who he gave up at birth, Feymark, who's cassgender

the whole Sept family just kinda. looked at their AGABs. and decided "fuck that watch this"

Modern AU Rambling

as I slowly start figuring everyone out for the AU, I'll add them to this/update their info! idk I just think it's a fun little AU <3

The gist: my SWTOR OCs in a modern/coffee shop AU-type setting. No war (though a few of them are discharged/retired vets), just something casual and domestic. not set in any particular city, but will be set in America so I don't have to research things and just keep this as a chill AU I can dabble in whenever in the mood

Xaerez: Alexander Zimman. Fine with Xander, doesn't like to be called Alex. Former sniper in the military, he has an unrecorded number of enemy officer kills. He was discharged due to injuries sustained on the field - injuries resulted in severe scarring to right side of face, loss of three fingers, hearing damage, and nerve damage in one leg that has him using a cane a lot of the time. Caused by the building he was perched in collapsing after it was bombed.

He comes from a rich and snobby military family; he moved out of country and cut contact with them. Without their support, he struggles for a while to keep a stable residence and job. Eventually finds a coffee shop that accepts him and he mostly works in the back. It's here that he meets the others.

Terrin: Tera Cadera. Married to Torian Cadera, with two young kids - Axel and Anya. She's lived in the area most of her life and frequents a number of the places that the others work. She's the one who connects them all, knocking some sense into a few of them and getting others to join in with her dumbassery, depending on what's needed.

She's a bouncer at the bar near the coffee shop. And yes, she's both teased and jokes about her rhyming name. Likes to go to the coffee shop in her off-time, and it's normally her place where they all get together for backyard barbecues and parties. She's terrible at cooking, however, so either Torian does it, or they do a potluck-style thing and everyone brings a little something.

Tera's the first one to befriend Xander. She just kind of... drags him along behind her while he scowls like an angry cat, and eventually introduces him to Theron.

Synnda: Sylas Vespa. Always had an interest in art, and by chance had the opportunity of an apprenticeship with a tattooist. On his mentor's passing, he found the shop passed to him in the will, and continues the practice. Keeps fresh flowers displayed in his shop.

He's tattooed head to toe with mostly flowers and somewhat religious imagery (angels and whatnot). Gentle giant, but has scars across his hand, face, and chest from armed thieves attempting to rob his shop to show that he's no pushover. He defended it and himself, sending them both to the hospital; his injuries were minor in comparison to theirs.

He lost an arm and leg in a crash as a teenager. Specializes in tattoos depicting nature, with a particularly strong point in flowers, but can do most anything.

Qizulth: Kai Verona. Spent most of his life moving place-to-place; didn't have many connections growing up because of it, so did a lot of reading. Picked up an interest in history at an early age, and for years wanted to be a history teacher.

Instead, he ended up an archeologist, and is extremely fond of the job. He makes sure the people working with him on-site don't damage anything, that everything gets properly recorded, and gets excited with new discoveries. Especially loves uncovering ancient tombs. Has a really odd vendetta against the city's museum that no one can explain.

Most of his tattoos are from Sylas' shop. Has really pretty creeping vines across his top surgery scars that Sylas was more than happy to do for him. The two are close friends, and when Kai is in town the two are together often when Sylas doesn't have clients.

Varrich: Vince Toft. Former Navy SEAL; was discharged due to severe injury from a bombing on the job that cost the lives of his squad. Injuries include: lost right arm (didn't want prosthetic), left eye (uses glass eye), scarring to face, chest and back, and spinal damage that's resulted in chronic pain once he healed from the injury itself.

Now, works in a greenhouse. Mostly tends to the plants, but can sometimes be found working the till if he's the only one around. Social recluse, but his sister drags him places when they both have time off so he at least has some interaction with other people who aren't customers and coworkers.

Lina: Lina Toft. Trauma nurse. She gardens as a hobby, growing her own fruits and veggies, and was the one who helped Vince find his current job since that's a place she frequents when she needs new plants or fertilizers.

Likes to work out when not gardening or with her brother. Has yet to lose an arm wrestling competition at the local bar.

Jen: Jensen Sept. Prefers Jen, don't even think about calling him Jensen. Delivery man, he ends up all over the state for his work but is always happy to get back home to his husband and kids. Everyone calls the man he's married to "Kitty," Jen and Kitty included - most don't know what his actual name is because the nickname has been used so much for so long. Has five kids, three of which are adopted, and loves them all dearly.

Can often be seen in the coffee shop or park with Kitty and the kids, or the bar with just Kitty. Very cheerful person; it's hard not to loosen up at least a little around him.

Leo: Calliope Viteri. Prefers Leo most of the time. Pretty cheerful and gentle, also great with kids despite not wanting her own. The Cadera kids, Axel and Anya, consider Leo and her girlfriend the "cool aunts."

She's a baker at a small family-owned place just down the street, and for parties she often brings cupcakes and such.

Azan: Azaria Tanzer. Role undecided, though may be a security guard someplace?

Atten & Araa: Axel & Anya Cadera. Tera and Torian's kids, with Atten being just under a year older than Anya. They're closeness in age means they do pretty much everything together and they're best friends. Both pretty young, so still get into a lot of trouble. Axel tends to be the brains of their little operations, while Araa is the one who actually climbs the cupboards or breaks the child locks so they can get into things.

Jessi, Jeva, Liakige, Riza, and Luci: Jessie, Joel, Liam, Rose, and Lucy Sept. Jen and Kitty's children, with Jessie, Joel, and Liam being adopted. They're a big family, but they're close - especially Joel and Rose, who do everything together. Jessie is a fair bit older than the rest of her siblings and has started college, but she visits home from the dorms across the city most weekends and holidays.
