I want this poster in my dorm. Let’s get to work.

(Lots of images and a bit of a long post below the cut)

First order of business is to get a straightened image of only the poster. Aspect ratio seems to be 3:4. I don’t think I can just print this with the prominent green overlay- it’d look out of place. And ink is expensive.

I’ve made a recreation of the poster, with the cropped image as my guide. It’s made to print on white paper with standard red and black ink. The poster will be aged/stained/distressed whatever you want to call it after printing. Here's mine with the original on top, and the clean version alone. Couldn't get the letter spacing perfect, but it’s not bad, and it only took four saves to get a file I was happy with. Sent it off to the print shop!

In the meantime, it's time for a test run of tea-staining. I decimated the tea bag and rubbed the grounds into the paper to get the mottled effect on the top two pages. The bottom paper was done with green tea and as you can see it's barely evident.

We are gathered here today in honor of the chai* we lost along the way, bravely sacrificing themselves in the line of paper-staining duty. Their efforts, while experimental, are nonetheless vital to the success of the project.

*there was also green tea but the stain was weak and I don't like green tea as much as chai so I don't feel bad about it

Then the water pump to my house broke so I went to a hotel overnight to have running water which was in the same town as the print shop so I got to pick up the poster! The red's a little washed out but oh well. The lady at the print shop unrolled it to show me so that I could verify it was the right one, and she thought it was great. I told her it's for my dorm room and that I felt a dorm needs at least one real weird bit of decor, and she agreed that it really adds to the aesthetic. It's here, I have running water to make tea with again, now it's time for teabaggi- nope, can't say that. Um. Time to stain it.

The first stain was done with one bag of double-spice chai. It didn't go very far because i prepared the tea for, y'know, drinking and didn't get to dip the bag back in to refresh it. The second stain was with two bags of single-spice which I dipped back into the tea to get more stain. I kept dipping them after breaking them open, then forgot I did that and went to drink the tea only to remember it's full of nasty leaf bits. I drank it anyway and brushed my teeth afterward. Here it is before staining, after the first stain, and right after the second with the tea bits still on it.

Here it is all done and hung up!! It's an accent piece, a conversation starter. Now to invade Mr. Gaiman's inbox.

Animation Night 151: Modest and Immodest Short Films

Ahoy my friends! The hour is late, but not so late that we can’t watch a few films...

So. Lackadaisy huh.

I feel like you need to be in a somewhat specific age bracket of internet old to feel like that’s immensely significant. You need to be a webcomics bitch, basically. But from quite a specific era: the decade or so window between when webcomics looked like newspaper comics, and before the present era of webtoons. The Webcomics Review narrativises it as people who went to art school arriving on the scene in the mid-2000s, and that seems accurate enough. And of that crop, Lackadaisy Cats was certainly one of the biggest!

The concept is pretty straightforward. It’s a Prohibition-era crime drama set at a speakeasy that’s seen better days... and also everyone is an anthropomorphic cat. It was the beginning of the furry boom (Digger was a contemporary). But mostly... Tracy J. Butler could really fucking draw. You could say things like: clean, expressive designs with a lot of texture and depth and strong composition. (Not surprisingly, she’d worked in animation before drawing the comic.)

And compared to other comics whose selling point was the art such as The Meek and Dresden Codak, it also updated (if I’m remembering right) fairly consistently. It had archetypal characters, a very clearly defined aesthetic, and, compared to many webcomics of its era, a clear, accessible story. In short it read like a pro comic.

So it was natural for it to pick up steam.

Now, at some point I kind of stopped keeping up with most of the webcomics I read back then. Sure, some of them stopped updating, but others kept on going, sustained on merch and later, Patreon type sites. In that time, the standard of art in the scene went way up, the number of comics became so huge that there was no longer really a ‘shared context’ of webcomic readers, and manga scans and webtoons arrived in force. It is now almost impossible to build a new following with a webcomic, but you can do pretty well for yourself if you got in at the start.

Well, in the last few years a new phenomenon has developed out of that whole webcomic scene: the crowdfunded independent animated film. I wrote about this a bit back on Animation Night 117, with the biggest example being Vivziepop‘s works like Hazbin Hotel. In 2000, Lackadaisy joined in, running a kickstarter for an art book and maybe a short film if it did well. You can guess the rest of that story.

These films sit at an odd scale between ‘independent’ and ‘studio’. If you look at the credits of Lackadaisy, you’ll see a small army of animators and cleanup artists to exceed most TV productions (apparently the staff number in the 170s in total). The calls they put out for animators were demanding. And the lavish effort certainly shows! The makers of Lackadaisy set their sights on full animation, on-model, cleaned up and with an ambitious drawing count. Every scene is full of movement and acting. (There’s actually an interesting stylistic choice where construction lines are left in the final composite on many scenes.)

But in many other ways it was very unlike a studio production. One of the animators who worked on the short, Manu Mercurial, has put out a little making-of retrospective, which is pretty light on detail, but still gives some info. Since the production took place during the pandemic, it was completely organised over Discord, with animators posting WIPs and receiving feedback in full view of everyone else, and a director receptive to animators adding their own spins to shots. This apparently led to an atmosphere of friendly competition that was beneficial to the film as a whole.

Mercurial is full of praise for the film’s director Fable Siegel, who seems to have been the major organising force behind making this be an impressive, finished short film instead of just a bunch of artists hanging out in Discord. At least going off IMDB credits, Siegel seems to have come to The Industry by way of participating in ‘Reanimated’ collabs on Youtube, before getting jobs on Hazbin and also Pendleton Ward’s experimental post-Adventure Time series The Midnight Gospel. (Right now their Twitter is a huge wall of Lackadaisy process shots if you’re curious.) Here’s an interview (by Toon Boom, so one of the questions is blatantly slanted to sell Toon Boom, but the rest is pretty interesting.)

The short film is presented as a pilot, and that is indeed how it plays out: a tour of all the major characters and dynamics of the comic/show, with a car chase, a set piece battle in a quarry, and a final wind down scene in the speakeasy itself which sets up the broader plot. It’s unquestionably very well executed. I’m certain it’s going to get a good few million views in the next few days alone, and maybe it will lead to a series. (Will it surpass Hazbin?). It’s got electro-swing, of course. SungWon Cho (ProzD) is in it, of course.

All the same... I wish it was weirder. Like something about Lackadaisy always feels like it’s playing it safe. It’s fun, it’s goofy, it’s charming... and that’s where it stops! For all that the creators like to talk about how we’re on the cusp of adult animation really taking off in America, the moonshine, and strangely ineffective guns, don’t really change the tone from the more mainstream animation. Bah humbug, etc.

Still, it’s unquestionably an extremely impressive work of animation and a sign of the way things are changing. I expect with all the animation studios laying off staff left right and centre, we’ll start to see a lot more like this.

Ian Hubert returns! I wrote briefly about him back on Animation Night 78. Hubert’s thing is compositing human actors into elaborate cyberpunk environments using Blender; his channel is full of ingenious tricks for creating impressive looking shots and effects with minimal geometry. What makes it work is Hubert’s eye for lighting and composition, knowing just where to place detail to sell a shot and what’s unnecessary for the camera.

The first episode of Dynamo Dream - which we’ll rewatch! - introduced us to a plant selling girl in some sorta cyberpunk megacity. After inadvertently saving out the weird cyborg landlord that runs her apartment, she gets a favour, which she calls on to contact her faraway boyfriend using a kind of missile launched phone terminal I guess? He invites her to come out and join him, but weird shit starts happening on the train. I haven’t watched this yet but I’m sure it’s going to deliver some fascinating visuals.

And then...

Modest Heroes is a collection of three short films by Studio Ponoc, a studio which spun out of Studio Ghibli. In the mid 2000s, the period that Ghibli could enjoy an exceptional state of employing lot of full-time salaried staff (instead of per project freelancers) was coming to an end. In 2014 it seemed they were on the verge of shutting down altogether. Yoshiaki Nishimura, lead producer of many of Ghibli’s films in the 2000s era (Howl - When Marnie Was There), left the studio in 2015, bringing in a bunch of ex-Ghibli animators under a new studio called Ponoc.

Their first film, Mary and the Witch’s Flower, apparently found it hard to define an identity beyond the shadow of Miyazaki (I haven’t seen it!), but things got a lot more exciting with their second. Modest Heroes is a collection of three short films, showing off a variety of ingenious approaches to animation. (It was originally planned to be four, but then Isao Takahata went and died while planning the segment on the theme of ‘death’... oof.) The writers of Animation Obsessive are big fans, and they’ve written two detailed, enthusiastic articles on two of the shorts in the collection.

Invisible, directed Akihiko Yamashita, is a take on the invisible man concept. Since the invisible man is, well, you know..., his entire existence must be communicated through interactions with objects and clothes. Yamashita hoped to communicate feelings and interior life. His invisibility is a metaphor for social invisibility, and thus it comes combined with other metaphors, such as weightlessness.

The idea came from Nishimura, who thought it was a worthy subject for an ‘animation genius’ such as Yamashita. Nishimura wanted the film to bring a kind of inventiveness that he felt was missing from the overly conservative contemporary anime. Yamashita, after leaving Ghibli, attempted to get by in the regular anime industry and found it unbearably strained. He returned to the fold to work on Boro the Caterpillar with Miyazaki, and this convinced him to follow Yamashita over to Ponoc.

The result is something gorgeous, with its emotional drama playing out against grimy desaturated backgrounds that are perhaps closer to something like Tekkonkinkreet than the Ghibli nature scene. Yamashita named quite a specific palate of inspirations...

As reference, Yamashita drew from Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men and Gravity, the films of Alejandro González Iñárritu and the manga of Junji Ito, among others. They contributed to the dark, unusual vibe and look of Invisible.

I’ve been wanting to watch this film for ages, here’s our chance!

Alongside that comes Yoshiyuki Momose’s film Samurai Egg (here’s the aniobsessive link again). Momose, the ‘right-hand man’ of Takahata, was one of the guys he leaned on to actually draw the storyboards of films like Grave of the Fireflies.

In contrast to the elaborate visual metaphor of Invisible, Samurai Egg is a very grounded film about a kid with a severe egg allergy. Takahata is famed as a realist, although a different sort than people like Okiura and Inoue who bring incredibly meticulous detail and well-observed acting to sci-fi scenarios. Certainly, Takahata would make films about ghosts and mythology, but he’d also make films like Only Yesterday that are much quieter, everyday dramas.

Despite sharing the everyday focus of, this film veers away from it into more expressionistic techniques, bringing in softer pencil effects to the anime cels, as well as techniques like 3DCG-rotoscoping. There’s a dance scene where Shinji Hashimoto gets to go nuts with shapes a la Ryan Woodward.

Momose took some pains to avoid being too sentimental with it; AniObsessive quote Nishimura in Animation Magazine:

When you make a film about a parent and a child, it’s easy to fall into the trap of showing a “heartwarming” relationship, and creating a cheap-feeling structure. We wanted to avoid that.

The film is pre-recorded - like Grave of the Fireflies, actually. (It’s the norm in the West, but rare in anime.) There’s some interesting linguistic nuance there:

It was necessary because Oko’s role called for something special. In a detail that’s lost on foreigners, Shun’s mom uses the Kishiwada dialect, which “sounds harsh, but you can feel the love behind it,” Momose said. It’s a cruder, shorter form of Japanese. They used it partly to fit more information into Samurai Egg’s 16-minute runtime, and partly to reveal the relationship she has with Shun. He’s a Tokyo kid — he speaks differently.

As for the third film...

Kanini & Kanino takes us underwater for a pair of kids who live on a coral reef. Alas, I don’t have a detailed article on the making-of and influences on this one, but I can tell you that the director Hiromasa Yonebayishi, aka Maro, is behind it - best known as the director of The Secret World of Arriety, When Marnie Was There, and Ponoc’s first film Mary and the Witch’s Flower. Notably the dialogue for this short is all in ‘crab language’ - are these kids anthro crabs? In fact, yes, it would appear they are anthropomorphic crabs. Sick. Whether they will attend a rave I can’t say, but the internet reliably informs me that is the primary activity of crabs, so probably.

I think that’s enough to be going with! Apologies it’s so late - I had to spend most of today reinventing Canabalt. But I succeeded, so I think I’ve gotten a lot better at this whole game dev thing. Let’s go enjoy some short films!

how i make scripts aesthetic on google docs (on pc) <33

Part One - Images

! Due to Tumblr's 30 image limit, I'll have to make this in parts. This one revolves around how I sort pictures to make them look aesthetic or just more organised in my script. + I'm not the best at organising tutorials sometimes but I'm trying to not make this confusing <//3

Ignore any typos and errors, thankyou. If you need me to re-explain anything, please feel free to ask. I feel like I haven't explained properly but, idk what else to do, lol :,)

Page isn't broken, to avoid messing up the way images are organised.

What do I use?

Other than Google Docs (obviously), — Fontspace | A background remover [my mains: 1, 2] | Pinterest/WeHeartIt/Google search, and other sources for pretty pictures, pngs, etc. 🤍🌙

bundling images

Using the different text wrapping options, I found that it helped a lot more to "bundle" images together, so that things look prettier + more organised.

! example

This is pretty simple, honestly; Fontspace provides font text as pictures, transparent bg and not, — so organising the text from it will fall under the tut for this bit.

^ These are the text wrapping options. The first one is the default and limits text placement/movement, the other four allow you to move text where-ever on the document (especially if print view is off) but each do different things.

In order of settings, examples (press images to see properly):

! tip : If you're bundling images that "overlap" too much, make sure to crop at least one (or however many needed) past its actual size so that it won't be a pain in the ass moving them later on.

- You may also use "behind text" for one of them, if it helps, so that it's easier to select the images, this also applies to using image over text (examples in each image).

what I mean:

Using these features, I'll—as per the aesthetic of my script—sort things accordingly. Get creative with the way you're doing this, and keep experimenting 'till you're able to make stuff look the way you want, lol.

Going into the aesthetics more ;; I usually pick diff aesthetics for each script and refuse to script until I find a pretty one LMFOAOAO- But I especially go for inspiration from (Korean?) bullet journal aesthetics which include lots of image bundling and customised tables.

Why korean ones specifically? Idk the difference, but using "Korean" as a keyword gets the stuff I'm looking for. 💀 But I also search for little pngs I want to add to my script; and if it's a false transparent png or has any background, I use my background removers to make it an actual transparent png.

And, sometimes, I like to search for colours then use my snip tool to screenshot them really thin, like those brown-beige borders you see in all my posts, then use them in my script like highlighter lines, like-

That's pretty much it, really.

! examples from two of my scripts

Fontspace fonts apply as well. One thing about Fontspace is that, you can change the colour of the text ;; as well as the background.

The brown colour is the text's colour, the blue one is the background's colour. You can of course choose to have no background, but it's there as an option.

I don't know of any features where you can save a colour but that's maybe me being dumb ;; but what I do is set a certain colour (i.e. blue) then use the colour adjustment in google docs to change it to black, red, or whatever over colours r in the script.

I hope this makes sense bc explaining this was harder than I thought. 💀💀 Once again I can clear anything up if needed

Keywords you can use for tiny decorations, are "clipart", "[aethetic name] clipart transparent png", "[aesthetic name] sticker png transparent", etc.

You can have a look at the aesthetics wiki for ideas for your script

Fotor is what I use to crop images into different shapes, and it is how I got the circle/heart shaped pictures in my documents ^-^*

...I'll add more when I remember them.

HEY YALL!!! sorry i've been stupidly busy raaugh but here is a old draft i have so enjoy :3c

Warm light intruded into the room through open curtains. The room was quiet and settled for a minimalist aesthetic, soft chirps of birds could be heard outside as if they were greeting the sun’s early rise. The light’s rays reflected off of the wooden floor and spread itself through the window onto a bed of sleeping two, a plush white blanket settled on both figures.

Graves awoke with a small groan and shifted a bit to a more comfortable position on his stomach, hugging the pillow underneath him. He was content until he was suddenly very aware of another figure next to him with his senses recognizing soft snoring and a warm dip in the bed.

And then, he was suddenly very aware of another detail. This wasn’t his bed. The mattress was a little too hard to his liking, the pillow was rather naked with no pillowcase and the blanket was weighed as opposed to his usual soft cotton. He was also, naked. Graves used his arms to prop himself up and look around, the blanket falling off his shoulders and landing in the middle of his back.

He leaned over and saw the sleeping man next to him. The brown hair short and cropped with a full well kept matching beard. Eyes closed and content. Graves’s face paled as he realized the sleeping mountain next to him.

Motherfucking Captain John Price of Task Force 141.

Graves put two and two together and gently lowered his head back on the pillow and closed his eyes, hoping that this was just some stupid prank that his mind had played on him. He estimated that 5 minutes have passed before opening his eyes again, seeing the same sight of Captain John Fucking Price sleeping next to him with his back faced towards him, naked, and softly snoring. Graves might as well put a gun to his own head and call it nighttime. This couldn’t be real.

Graves then winced at a growing pressure in his head that quickly became worse with every passing second. It felt like a rubberband was tightly squeezing his head and he groaned and cursed as he tried to soothe the ever growing recognizable hangover that was starting to form. He rubbed his temples before sighing from frustrations as he started to connect the dots. How could he be so reckless and stupid? Sleeping with Captain— fucking— Price? All the while drinking at that stupid party at the bar with their respective teams?

He felt the said figure shuffle next to him, making Graves flinch as Price groggily sat up. He looked over to Graves with a neutral expression, in which Graves was looking back at him with straightened lips and squinting eyes. Price then got up and stretched before disappearing into the bathroom.

Graves laid there, mouth agape. Maybe Price was just too tired to acknowledge that the Shadow Company’s Commander was in his bed, naked, looking confused, or maybe he just didn’t care? Graves could swear that he was, indeed, losing his mind. After a few minutes, Price walks out of the bathroom with a pair of shorts and a random shirt on and walked out of the bedroom with the door wide open.

Yep, this was definitely some prank because there was no way that the Task Force 141’s Captain was just acting like this was some casual thing. With a sigh, Graves threw over the blanket and got up from the bed. Or at least, attempted to. He felt major soreness on his lower back and specifically between his legs. His ears reddened as he felt something slowly dripping out of him. Graves definitely knew that he wasn’t black out drunk last night. If he was, he wouldn’t remember the faded memories of… sleeping with Captain Price.

He very awkwardly reached the bathroom, and was immediately met with his reflection. His blonde hair was pointing towards every direction it could, and his cheeks and ears were red as he observed the numerous of, ahem, love bites over his neck and chest. Some on his legs and most notably doted on his inner thighs.

Speaking of inner thighs, there was some white substances from the previous night before running down his leg. Graves swore that his face couldn’t get any more heated as he did his business and tried to clean up as much as possible. When he was done, Graves assumed that Price was cooking as he smelt something most similar to eggs and toast and the soft noises of a spatula hitting on a metal pan

Graves put on his jeans from what he wore the night before and picked up a random shirt he found on the floor (most definitely Price’s but he pretended like he didn’t acknowledge that) and put it on, seeing how his own shirt was… somewhere in the house. He walked out of the bedroom, looking around in the hallway and seeing most of nothing. Just white colored walls.

Graves walked towards the direction of the smell, seeing a small wooden table with four chairs next to the kitchen where Captain John Price stood over a stove, making eggs and toast was ready out to be taken out of the toaster. There was water boiling in a nearby kettle, and a half full bottle of orange juice resting on the tiled counters. Price detected the new presence and looked over, meeting Graves’s curious eyes.

“Good morning, Sleeping Beauty,” Price greeted.

“Mornin’,” Graves replied.

Price moved to transfer the eggs onto a plate before cracking more eggs into the pan. Graves just watched, unsure what to do. Should he get his stuff and leave? Should he stay and pretend like he was most definitely not intruding into Price’s home? He was using the Captain’s shirt as temporary coverage for god sake. He wasn’t sure if he was already crossing a boundary.

“Are you just gonna stand there like a deer in the headlights or are you gonna sit down so I can serve you breakfast?” Price asked while adding salt and pepper to the eggs as they sizzled.

“Oh,” was all that Graves could mutter out then he awkwardly took out a chair from the table and sat in it. “Um, I’ll just—I’ll just sit down.”

God, Graves was just making an absolute fool of himself and he knew it. He just wanted to lay his head down on the table and forget about the world. He was sure that even if he did try to forget about the world, he would still be incredibly embarrassed with how he was acting right now. He was acting like a school girl who didn’t know how to act around her crush. Maybe even more awkward than that. His thoughts were interrupted when Price placed down a plate of two toast slices and two perfect sunny side up eggs that were companied with a fork.

“Do you want tea or orange juice?” Price asked as he went back to the kitchen and grabbed a random mug in the cabinet.

“Orange juice,” Graves answered, “please.”

Price soon placed down a white mug that was full of orange juice on Graves’s side and then placed down his own plate along with his own mug that had a tea bag tail sticking out. It felt… domestic, to put it lightly. Of course, Graves has had his own fair shares of one night stands and experiences of hookup culture, and he was sure Price did too.

They were single adults afterall.

But Graves didn’t hookup with his coworkers or anyone in his work space, it was always his personal rule as things could get dicey. Price, on the other hand, was treating this like it was just as any other day and like he had not screwed the Shadow Company’s CEO’s brains out the other night and definitely (most definitely) made him scream his name.

Graves’s ears turned red, remembering many of the details from last night. He decided to eat, maybe it would distract him enough to ignore the very, very, very unnerving silence between the two. It was tense, maybe only for Graves as Price seemed very collected as he just ate like it was a normal Sunday.

As Graves grabbed his mug to take a sip, Price spoke up, “how’s the hangover?”

“Mm,” Graves thought for a bit, “definitely a lot better than it was when I initially woke up.”

“How are you feeling overall?”

“I feel fine. A little sore if anything,” Graves paused to drink from his mug before looking at Price. “What about you?”

“I feel alright,” Price said as he got up and put his empty plate in the sink and decided to rest there with his mug, enjoying the warmth of the soothing drink.

Graves nervously rubbed his hands together, “can we forget this ever happened?”

The brunet looked at him, unsurprised, “if that’s what you want.”

Graves nodded as he got up, “thank you for cooking me breakfast, I really appreciate it. I’m just gonna get my stuff and leave. I’ll see you whenever, Captain.”

Price’s eyes followed Graves leaving the room wordlessly.

Graves made sure he had his stuff, wallet, keys, phone, before he put on his shoes and practically dashed out the front door. He walked a couple minutes away from the Captain’s house before calling someone to pick him up. One of his shadows soon came and picked up the commander. In which the shadow looked at Graves’s neck with a smug grin.

“Fun night?”

“Just drive.”

“Yessir.”

Roasting the Yugioh rivals' hair

Haven't done this in a while, time to roast more characters, going from least absurd hair to most absurd hair. (For the record, I like all these characters at least a bit so take this with a grain of salt, I went really in on some of them)

1 Seto Kaiba

All the money in the world from stealing your rich daddy's company and you still can't find time to make your hair look different from a depressed Kuriboh?

2 Jack Atlas

Dang, that cheese looks good enough to eat. Mind cutting me a slice? Hey! Can you hear me? Oh shoot, he's wearing earbuds! He can't hear me!

3 Jun Manjome

So what's it like having a giant dancing emo spider on your head? Blends in well with the rest of your emo suit. Your aesthetic crashes and burns like the thunder you name yourself after :)

4 Roa Kirishima

For a jerky self-absorbed diva boy who hogs the spotlight, your hair is surprisingly underwhelming. I mean come on, only one bland colour? No accessories? How do people even see you onstage? I guess it looks like a malformed star if you squint?

5 Reiji/Declan Akaba

Charles Darwin the father of evolution published his one of the renowned book 'The Origin Of Species' in 1859. (As a microbiologist this was epic)

I am curious: unless some of these are plot relevant and therefore spoilers, how do you imagine the other Outer Gods' vassal beasts to look? The Greater Will has the Elden Beast, of course, and I've always taken the Twinbird to be Destined Death's envoy rather than the god itself. And as far as I could understand your Prehistory fic, Placidusax may have once been the Dark Moon's vassal, an original idea if I've ever seen one. So have you considered how the vassals of the Frenzied Flame, Scarlet Rot (likely the Great Scorpion), Formless Mother (the Blood Star perhaps?) and so on would look and function?

Thanks for the ask! I'd draw these if I were better at creature design, but... Well, I'll find a couple reference images for each.

I've got the clearest mental picture of the God of Rot. Definitely a scorpion body (maybe a more stretched and segmented body, sort of like Astel). Or maybe something more akin to a camel spider. I've seen designs that are sort of a scorpion centaur with a human upper body. But if I were designing the beast, I'd go with just a human face, sort of like Koh the Face Stealer.

For the Dark Moon, I'd picture something a bit more traditionally lovecraftian. Lots of tentacles, inhuman form, looks like something you might find lurking in deep space. I can't help but think of the Moon Presence from Bloodborne whenever I try to picture this god lol. I could also see basing the design off of a deep-sea squid or jellyfish.

The Formless Mother I see being the most humanoid of the lot -- or at least, the one making the greatest effort to appear human shaped. Her true form is horrific and incomprehensible, but when she appears to her vassals, she looks like a ghostly red woman in head-to-toe robes. But something's always... Off. I'm picturing something like an onryo (as they're portrayed in movies like Ju-On and Ringu). Not the long-black-hair-with-pallid-skin aesthetic, but occupying that same corner of the uncanny valley. The way she moves, you can almost hear her bones breaking with every step. Or maybe she doesn't have bones at all. Catching a glimpse of the face under that hood will keep you awake for weeks. You can't quite tell if she's something horrible or if something horrible has been done to her.

The Fell God is interesting, because we actually have ingame depictions of his face. At first I pictured him as a bigger, better fire giant. But that's not very fun. So what if he's only a face/head? A big, fire-breathing head that floats around like a blimp full of flaming gas? That would dovetail nicely with my theory that the Fell God was associated with/was the sun in the previous age.

And finally, the Frenzied Flame. This one I never really pictured as having a physical manifestation -- it seemed more like an abstract force to me, despair made manifest. But two pieces of imagery keep cropping up around the Frenzied Flame. Flame (obviously), and eyes. So I wouldn't want to just straight up steal Peter Jackson's design for the Eye of Sauron... But that's definitely moving in the right direction.

ive seen many complaints about the way the new Tumblr mobile update has handled pictures. but i have only seen a couple people talking about how deeply inaccessible it is. and i want to go through it.

first I'll explain the changes for anyone who is new or who uses desktop because I'm fairly certain it's different there.

before when you were scrolling on your feed and you tapped on a picture to view it, if there was a margin around the picture it was black. if you double tapped the picture, it would zoom in. you could do this twice and the third time would return it to normal zoom. if you scrolled up or down, it would close the image and put you where you were on your feed before opening the image. if you scrolled to the sides, it would scroll through any other images that were on the same post.

now when you open the image, the margins are filled with a zoomed, cropped, and blurred section of the image. when you double tap, it likes and zooming is difficult. when you swipe up, it gives you a different post, generated by an algorithm to be similar. if you scroll to the side, it brings you to the posters blog. both of the swipe functions also do this when you are zoomed in as well.

i can only speak to my own accessability needs, but there are several and i know i can't be alone in any of them. for context the relevant things are that i have low vision which requires high contrast and photosensitive migraines which require low brightness. as you can imagine, this is a very specific balance of things that is easily made difficult.

firstly, the background of the image. i used to open the image specifically because of the background. increasing the contrast around the edge of the image and removing irrelevant details made it significantly easier to see. there were frequently posts that i straight up couldn't see properly until i opened them. with the new background feature, images that i have opened are impossible to see clearly. i can barely tell where the actual image is and where the background is. i functionally understand the aesthetic value of the change but there are regularly posts that i straight up can't see anymore because of this. there should be an option for high contrast backgrounds available so that people who need it can still have it.

next is the zoom. the double tap to zoom was one of my favorite features. because when something was small or hard to see it was easy to make it visible and i didn't have to change how i was holding my phone. now if i need to zoom, i have to shift and the pinch to zoom is very buggy. it is difficult to get the zoom where i need it on the image and it regularly causes glitches that alter the image. and i have to zoom out and back in to move when i am zoomed in to or else the new swipe features engage. this is hard on my eyes and hard on my hands that have fucked up joints because it requires a lot more small repetitive motions to do the same thing. this change seems to be mostly conformist to be more like other sites which is disappointing for the hellsite, bit it could easily be made at least accessable if there were an option to have the double tap zoom or even if the bugs on the pinch zoom were fixed.

lastly is the swipe feature. while this is mechanically and aesthetically obnoxious to me i will hold my focus on accessability. it interacts very poorly with the zoom feature, making it hard to navigate the image viewer when zooming is needed. from a dexterity standpoint, it also makes it more difficult to see what i want to see. if my hands a shaking i will sometimes open an image and get an entirely different one because of the algorithm swipe. I've had to scroll back up to three times to get what i actually clicked on because the swipe function is so sensitive and buggy. it is also more difficult to close the image. i often have to give it multiple attempts to close the image because when i swipe down, it doesn't go away and i can't get my back button to come up without it going to a new post. the bugs should be fixed and it needs some mechanical fixes, but this should also be made optional.

tldr for @staff: the new image viewer is deeply inaccessible for visually impaired people and people with dexterity issues and the bugginess makes it so much worse. all of the new features around the image viewer should be made optional for both accessability reasons and aesthetic reasons. i understand the attempt to streamline the site to look and feel more 'modern' but please don't forget that disabled people still want to use this site

How he Fits the Trope: Ollie is a genius, that’s what everyone in his life always said. He had the numbers for it, the test scores for it, the IQ for it, and his parents were always so proud. Ollie was voted Homecoming King after making a joke about promising everyone free drugs of his own stash (he did deliver).

Ollie & Monty decided to move their drug supply off campus once they realized that the cops were not leaving. It's now located in a house that is under New Construction.

Ollie got a clue with flight information to Portugal from the Haunted House. It matched with Parker's and the two of them turned them anonymously turned the info into the police thinking they'd do something with it. They haven't really.

Ollie was asked by the Naïve Newcomer (before he was expelled) if he could start looking into who this mysterious "G" person was. He did and all of his findings lead to Milo Navarro. Turns out he was wrong though, whoops.

Like everyone who turned one in, his time capsule video was leaked, where he may or may not have been admitting to having feelings for Monty. Who is to say what he was saying.

The cops decided to trust him after his interrogation went well. A bad decision on their part.

He was trapped in The Ski Chateau's kitchen pantry with Milo while Penny mysteriously died. He's pretty fucking shaken up about it.

Ollie threw a party with Link and Mari for their birthdays. Ollie left with Link and got a tattoo of his initials on his wrist.

At the Valentine's Social Ollie was sent a Valentine from G telling him if he sent a secret they would send him a clue. He sent a secret, he hasn't gotten anything back yet though.

During the Valentine's Social Ollie sent a vaguely illicit Valentine to Link that G then sent to Monty. It caused the two of them to fight and they stopped talking to each other over Spring Break.

While Ollie was going through the House of Mirrors at the Spring Carnival he saw and heard someone that sounded like Greer. This is the SECOND time he thinks he's seen Greer and it's getting creepy.

During the Spring Carnival Ollie apologized to Monty and confessed that he wanted them to date. Monty asked Ollie out and they started dating. Aw.

Ollie was sent a text from G to attend a Rave. First he was sent to a cemetery with Ash who might or might not think he's G now, but he doesn't know that.

At the Rave he and Anya attempted to put their brains together to find G but that lasted about five minutes before G said they were stupid (not what G actually said, but they might as well) and then sent everyone home.

Commencement happened at the end of the year and Ollie would rather not think about it.

He was on the second floor of the Commons talking to Eddie when it was set on fire, and he managed to escape with only a little smoke inhalation (but he's been training for that for years) so he was fine.

It was after when he got a text telling him that The Pollyanna, a friend and neighbor of his since they were children, had been arrested and was being blamed for the Fire, being G, Greer's disappearance, and the deaths that happened. He's been pretty fucked up over it.

He and Monty went on a poorly timed road trip over the summer and it went poorly ending in them breaking up.

Back at school and Ollie has been made Homecoming King for the second year in a row! Yay! The year is off to a great start.

13. What are some motifs you associate with them? Did you intentionally bring in those motifs, or did it happen over time?

I rarely start off characters with fully fleshed out aesthetics/themes/motifs. I build them up and then see what crops up as significant or reoccuring on it's own. That said, what I have so far:

✪ Nora: Change and growth, planning and leadership, building family and community, etc. Symbolism like suns, stars, and chess pieces all play into these in some way - as well as showing up in the story more literally (Sun = Sanctuary sign and Nick's bit about the night getting darker post Kellogg, Star = MM general uniform).

Nora also has wardrobe changes that represent changes in her character and growth, with at least 4 significant outfits throughout the story.

✝ Alberta: Al is a bit of a warped mirror to Nora, so their motifs are more stagnant or 'for the worse'. I tend to associate them more with loss (both with death and their own agency), decay, and general loneliness. Their story also has frequent reoccuring themes of Al letting others take advantage of them in some way, knowingly or not.

19. What sparks genuine, unadulterated rage in them?

Neither will stand to watch people treat others poorly for any reason. They won't abide by cruelty or neglect to children either.

A heavy hitter is anyone threatening people they care about, and they will blindly turn to violence if it seems the only way to stop it - even if the person they care about has it coming to them in some way.

30. How do they handle confrontation?

✪ Nora: Diplomacy first. Subterfuge second. Force last. She'll try to give multiple chances for her opponents to back down and settle things with words, even when she's fully backed her enemy into a corner, but she also learns some amount of ruthlessness from letting others burn her for her kindness.

✝ Alberta: Arcs up like a dog. Will use (blunt) words first to try to make the other back down before it comes to blows, but isn't holding back if it does. If it's someone Al refuses to fight she'll usually just run from the situation and sulk about it.

31. Do they respond well to praise? How about criticism?

✪ Nora: Enjoys praise from people whose opinions she cares about (companions mostly) but it isn't needed or that highly desired. Ultimately she will do what she feels she must despite what others might say about it.

✝ Alberta: Has an almost pavlovian response to praise. Desires it so much more than they will ever fully let on. Doesn't take so well to criticism, will bite back and tell the person to shove it.

45. What lies do they tell themselves?

✪ Nora: It's hard to think of a specific one. I suppose her thoughts/reactions to potential changes - in that she spends a lot of time desperately clinging to the vestiges of her life before the war and hoping to bring some of it back, and believing that many of the changes she does go through make her a worse person.

✝ Alberta: That the Brotherhood aren't that bad... A lot of other stuff that's harder to just lay out here.

And so I decided to strike right on the middle bcs I always enjoyed the idea of this motherfucker flipping like a switch, also because he is an older brother, and he cleans the house and does the crops and tells stories and helps with the animals and maintains the house, and is fuzzy and very classic focused. But you know, he will also murder Abel in a split second and he gets a JOY doing it. Most of the time. But also enough to live with him normally and still have dinners and get mad when someone else hurts him.

His front hair flop also comes from the fact that he has to hide the "MARK OF CAIN" TM. The one that hits you 7 times worse if you hurt him. He has no control of what that shit does tho.

So I sharpened the old man, still gave him kind eyes. I unbrokened his nose, because is impossible to break it without you dying, so this man is SURPRISINGLY DELICATE when it comes to fights.

A well groomed beard that can be easily messed up. And big CAINines.

The clothes are just classic Cain clothes but pushin a little bit more of the military ww1 aesthetic he is placed with.

ABOUT ABEL:

Younger frisky freer brother.

A lot of Abel is based of Harveydont's Abel work. In all honestly we both worked on these bozos over the years.

Regardless here is the explanation for his look at least on my end.

He has always been a fancy little lad, a lot more pristine than his brother. A lot of the thought behind Abel is how he does a lot less of heavy work such as gardening or house renovating, but does things such as cooking and sweeping and organizing. Which is why he can always afford to be dressed to the nines.

Always seems to dress BETTER and be well more mannered. But while nicer he is also a trickster. So He can't be a circle.

Anyway, this picture also has done its millage.

This is the ORIGINAL sketch for Abel by Joe Orlando. I think my man nailed it first try. There has been A LOT of Cains over the years, but Abel always... ALWAYS relatively looks like this. And I have NO ROOM to complain.

As you can visibly see he hasn't changed much... I just put a knife to him and sharpened his features, as well give him bigger eyes than Cain bcs 1) makes him also look unhinged 2) Can also look more innocent.

Also his mutton chops are cleaner, in general his look is more put together and softer. He is supposed to be PRISTINE. The ring on his hand is because CANNONICALLY, Abel wears the gayest shit in the comics and I something he could fiddle with when nervous. (Mesh shirt while cooking, you know, gay club look just while cooking, iconic. Speak your truth, king.)

Also I made their skin darker bcs I am tan to darker color and I Was like, lol I can't be stopped now!

also fuck the not being able to dress for the weather!!! i am lucky to have a vaguely good grasp on what to wear even without knowing the weather (which is majority bc my standard outfit for anything is short sleeved shirt, long pants, and a sweater tied around the waist in case it ever gets cold? maybe i don't have a sense i just was always prepared?) but i did have a very close friend who is also very bad at gauging the weather and 😔😔 man it sucks!!! u did have a fair instinct though a lot of ppl who work in the sun tend to wear longsleeves, but they are supremely uncomfortable

also ah yeah. coming to terms with difficult things while experiencing nature is i feel like. a common experience. will not say more about it though can always lend a listening ear privately if u need!

I've been making a bit out of not dressing right for the weather for so long that I somehow forgot. That the bit started because it was true. I'm not like idiotically terrible, I do have some sort of a system (below 35F is pants weather, below like 45F--I forget the exact number rn--I wear either long sleeves or pants, but not both), but in general I don't dress properly. I'm a shorts in winter girl </3.

Summer is usually better thought because at the core of it I like to wear less. I like shorts and crop tops and tank tops and small clothing items that show a lot of skin--both for aesthetic and sensory purposes. So summer months are well suited to that! Except for my need for socks at all times, that can get a little uncomfortable, but not as uncomfortable as not wearing socks. I just. Don't adjust my outfits when it gets cold as quickly as I should. I keep wearing my shorts and crop tops regardless. but it's usually only a winter problem

Which is partly why i was so exasperated with myself yesterday because it was like...i love underdressing its all I ever do and NOW i'm OVERDRESSED?? when I specifically tried to be properly dressed? like c'mon can't I have a win? I wore the longsleeve because it's colder at the top of the mountain and I was anticipating more wind, but then it was quite warm--at least until the storm hit, and then I was like oh thank god this works out for once. I got my win. But until it hit I was walking around in my bra

And yeah, there's just. Something about thinking when in nature that hits different. It wasn't necessarily that I had the realization, it was more me...giving it more space in my head? And better acknowledging it? Because it's been creeping up for a while (months if not over a year), and I've known it's been creeping, but I haven't wanted to face it. But I know it'll be better and more responsible if i do so I'm trying to do it (gradually) even though its scary. And recently I've been actually looking at it more instead of turning away, and i think yesterday just happened to be a turning point where I'm more determined to go through then wanting to turn away. Which is nice, even if it's terrifying. Anyway, that's very vague as it is personal (it's got to do with queer identity) and this is public, but I do appreciate your willingness to lend an ear--I might just take you up on that <3

hello! welcome to stopgapped, my new roleplay blog. home to muses, wishlists, & advertisements. penned by bowie ( 21, they / them ) & currently searching. guidelines below the cut.

first and foremost, welcome to the blog! i'm here to search for some roleplay partners! i have all of my information and guidelines below, so if you're interested in any advertisement or post i've made, please read these before reaching out. thank you!

001. i am a literate / novella roleplayer and can write anywhere from 700 to 2,000 words. i tend to write a lot. i would prefer having a partner who can somewhat match length, being able to write at least 500+ words. i'm not policing this by any means, but i love getting inside of characters' heads and feel i can do that so much better through longer replies!

002. i will only roleplay with people 18 years or older. minors dni under any circumstances.

003. i don't have any triggers and i'm a bit of an angst whore. i love anything dark, gritty, and whumpy - let's put our characters through the wringer and see how they fare with a touch of hurt/comfort <3 of course, this doesn't mean i don't want fluffy and/or fun moments, i just really prefer exploring the darker side of the human experience and would love a partner who is also interested in that. with that being said, character-driven roleplays are my bread and butter!

004. i write in third person only and have a preference for past tense, but i'm not going to turn you away if you prefer writing in the present tense. i usually mirror the length and formatting of my partner's replies as well!

005. i dabble in all kinds of pairings, but my main one will always be mxm. almost all of my characters are queer and it's something i adore exploring!

006. ooc chatter is as important to me as the roleplay itself, if not more important! i want to become friends with my partner and be able to gush about our characters, create pinterest boards and aesthetics and playlists, all of that jazz. i want to hear all about your characters, paragraphs of details are always appreciated. i really would love a partner who shares equal enthusiasm about what we write and create.

007. i'm completely open to writing with ocs or canon characters ( if not otherwise stated in my ads ), and if i'm not sure who your canon character is, feel free to explain them and their lore to me! i see it the same as anyone describing their oc, and i most often dabble in writing canons anyway.

008. i'm a pretty busy person and sometimes i can run into the occasional creative slump, but i'll still be active ooc even if it takes me a bit to respond to our roleplay. if you're someone who needs rapid fire responses, i'm probably not the person for you. on my side, i'm always patient and can wait however long for a response! days, months, years. whatever. take your time, this is a fun hobby and i don't see the point in rushing art!

009. i'm cool with smut, but it's not a must and we can always fade to black if you're uncomfortable with that kind of thing. if you want a smut heavy plot, though, please look elsewhere.

010. triggering and dark themes can and will be present in pretty much all of my roleplays, simply because i enjoy exploring them and seeing how they affect my character(s). specific triggers will be placed in each ad, but note that the most common triggers that'll crop up are child abuse, suicidal thoughts, and depression.

Now it's time for the opposite, my least favorite sync pairs. I tend to stay pretty positive with this game, and think it does an amazing job. But there are certain sync pairs that I look at and think "Ugh, why?" Usually, these are seasonals, or picks that I think are a bit lame in comparison to other options they had. But sometimes it's the costume. I'm not as super negative about this game, and again, most of their picks are solid, so we'll keep this to maybe 15. I don't think I could go beyond that without feeling bad.

15) Winter Siebold. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with Winter Siebold. I just feel like they didn't try. This is a common complaint for Winter alts, apparently, but I just feel like it's too similar to his regular design. Also, why Octillery? This was such a weird alt to be one of the first in the game.

14) Halloween Acerola. Another small complaint; I don't like the outfit. I think it looks dopey. I think it's just the hood seems to big to me, and it just looks off. And it's a shame Mimikyu got an alt that seems...really bad, honestly.

13) SS Cynthia. I absolutely hate that it's a crop top for no reason. That doesn't look good, and it doesn't seem like something Cynthia, specifically, would wear. It's an extra shame because honestly, the general aesthetic looks great, and if it weren't for that, this would be a favorite. I mean, Kommo-o's not a favorite, but I can be flexible, you know?

12) SS Leon. "But his himbo outfit!" I know, I don't think it looks good. I'm sorry. Raihan is right. He's a way better dresser and he knows it.

11) Summer Marnie. I could probably combine this and the next one, but as a general rule, I dislike anything swimsuit focused. Not a fan. I think the prior year's Summer alts were ideal, and this was a massive step down. Also I don’t respect Grimmsnarl.

10) Summer Gloria. Same as above, but Gloria's a little worse to me solely because Intelleon. This thing bugs me so much.

9) NY!Volkner. This is the last of the strictly "don't like the look" options that comprise the bottom picks. His outfit looks caveman-like, and I don't think it fits that well.

8) Allister. Why...did it have to be Gengar? Did we need another Gengar? Really? Bea took Sirfetch'd instead of another Machamp, why couldn't you do something interesting like take Cursola? It's just a boring and lame pick.

7) Falkner. Why is it Swellow? I know, it wasn't going to be Pidgeot, but like...Noctowl. This is a bulky supporter that can buff offenses and crit, and has a good flinch rate with Fly. Just make it Noctowl! Do you know what I would give for my baby Noctowl to be good at something? It's such a cool regional bird and you threw it aside for Swellow to perform a role it doesn't remotely fill under normal circumstances! Come on! *sigh* Maybe a cool Halloween alt some day...

6) Palentine's Bea. Her outfit is actually somewhat cute, but I'm gonna say that my big problem is the pick of partner. Vanilluxe is cool, and it should've gone to a PokeStar Studios alt for Rosa. Instead, it's here. With Bea. And Vanilluxe is absolutely not popular enough to be used on two different limited pairs. It's certainly no Charizard, and apparently no Gengar either. So there hope lies, dead in a Hail-exclusive support that I don't like that much.

5) SS Misty. *cracks knuckles* Now let's get salty. SS Misty, by design, is already not my favorite. I don't like anything midriff exposing as an aesthetic, but moreover it bothers me how they keep referring to her as a tomboyish mermaid and that this costume is reflective of that, when it's the girliest outfit she’s ever worn. Moreover, Vaporeon. This is the first of "I don't like the pick." There were alternatives. You had options, and you took Vaporeon. And I don't really agree with it. The lucky aspect is there's not another Water-type trainer I'd be clamoring to get Vaporeon, and this does leave Flareon at least open for a potential Leaf alt. But I don't really love the pick.

4) Rachel. Rachel's outfit is stupid, and I'm legitimately mad this is the scoutable Umbreon. I guess there's BP Karen, but Double Edge really isn't the play I'd want for it either. We get two Umbreon, somehow, and they're both kinda meh. That stings, PoMa. That really stings.

3) Spring Burgh. His outfit is an affront to the eyes of the Lord. It bothers me so much. Moreover, I don't know why he had to get Togepi. I guess egg theme, but like...I dunno. I really like Togetic, I'm glad it didn't go to him, but it's a bit disheartening that we have a Togepi and Togekiss, but no Togetic.

2) Lucas. I cannot believe they gave him Dialga. It should've been Bidoof. That, at least, would've been his fans getting something, and me having a good time of it too. But no, my favorite of the celestial dragons, going to Lucas. And the worst part is, no matter how irrelevant he is, this spawned a ton of people arguing that if he got the legend, obviously he did the main story, so he's the "real" protagonist over Dawn. Nevermind he's showing up over a year late compared to her, and continues to not have any story focus, even in the villain arc, where he does the barest minimum. I don't like Lucas, and this being the Dragon Zone alt with Dialga really, really sucks. But hey, could be worse!

1) Palentine's Marnie. It could be the congregation of every negative possibility at once! Dialga's a legend; there can always be a shiny later. But you look me in the eye and tell me Mawile stands a chance of being in twice, or that the other will get Mega Evolution too. I can't even ignore it; it's Steel Wish, so necessary. And this was supposed to be Valerie's Pokemon. Valerie has nothing left. Terrible base abilities, terrible grid, and the ideal partner for an alt taken. And to give it to Marnie, of all people. I don't like Marnie. She is a boring rival character, whose sad town and “discarded by society” team was done way better with Guzma, Plumeria, and Team Skull. She's not challenging, she doesn't really have much personality, and unlike her brother, she doesn't really stand for anything either. This bland rival character got a third alt in the span of a year, took the ideal partner from my favorite Kalos gym leader, and pushed it into Steel type. I hate it. I don't even generally mind Marnie's popularity, or her getting a third alt, but this one legitimately stings. Nothing this game has done bothered me quite like this. Maybe Valerie’s grid. Maybe. That was just uncalled for.
