By the way, it wasn’t Nintendo that said that Shiver was ‘female’. It was Nintendo of America specifically. You know… The ones who changed Gracie’s gender from male to female because he was a gender nonconforming male? And the ones who censored Vivian being a canon trans woman? And the ones that changed Kirby from being a genderless character to being a boy? In other words, the ones with a literal repeated, verifiable history of censoring gender nonconforming and trans characters?

Edit: Apparently, not just ‘the ones’… THE EXACT SAME DUDE who was involved with localizing, and thus, censoring The Thousand Year Door (the game that Vivian was from) was the one who answered the question about Shiver’s gender.

I HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THIS FOR SO LONG i absolutely would love to elaborate on this

Frye would often ask her mom to do henna designs on her when she was a kid because she was so fascinated by it and it made her feel so cool

When she was a bit older and had more refined motor skills her mom started teaching her how to do it herself!

She would do henna designs on herself all the time in school and sometimes her teachers would have to stop her from doing it in class bc she wouldn't be paying attention-

Since she could only practice with her dominant hand she'd usually only have one hand/arm with designs on it, but since she's a flexible dancer she could do it pretty easily on both her feet/ankles

Shiver probably asked about henna one day and Frye info dumped to them, then probably said something like "but i can't get really good at it only practicing on myself," and Shiver was like "kay do it on me then??"

The first time Frye did henna on Shiver was the first time she actually did any sort of henna design on anyone besides herself, so she messed up a lot bc it wasn't what she was used to

Shiver honestly didn't care if Frye messed up because the designs were always very pretty regardless of the mistakes, and it was basically two hours of Frye holding their hands so it was a win for them either way

Overtime Frye got better and better, she started trying more intricate designs, more full arm patterns, doing henna on both sides of the arm, etc.

She'd come up to Shiver and be like "alright so there's this new design I wanna try but it might turn out bad" and Shiver would just let her do anything

Shiver is very honored that Frye uses them to practice in reality lol they might act like it's no big deal but they're always there to be available to help their gf and wearing the designs makes them really happy bc its a part of Frye's culture that she's sharing with them <3

Now, Frye will especially do henna designs on Shiver for splatfests! she'll do some on herself too (or visit her mom and have her help) and i bet even big man would get in on it too... imagine how epic he would look with his whole fins covered

[quick disclaimer, I am not indian nor do I come from a culture that practices using henna, so if I have said anything wrong about the art please correct me! I've researched the practice a little bit but my knowledge isn't the same as firsthand experience]

Apon further speculation, I think im gonna hc Shiver as She/They- so that I dont keep feeling like the entire game is misgendering them. Plus its funky and I like it- still non-binary, but still identifying as female. Suck it Nintendo.

Edit: here’s hoping the Japanese version of the full game proves NOA wrong!!

Shye headcanons comin up!!

Shiver and Frye often have drunk karaoke nights, somehow they still sound good when they're belting out the wrong lyrics to all the popular songs that come on

Frye teaches Shiver all the choreography for their songs, and she makes them herself! well specifically the point choreo, like the chorus dance in anarchy rainbow but she encourages shiver to add their own flair to the dance too

Frye's favorite thing to do when cuddling is put her hands on shiver's chest and just run her thumb soothingly across their skin, its strangely affirming for them so frye likes to do it often

When they were younger, they used to take their eels and sharks out to play together <3 the creatures got along surprisingly well which might be a sentiment to how well shiver and frye got along too

Shiver is a songwriter, and sometimes when they're just staring at frye thinking "wow I love my girlfriend so much," lyrics and melodies come up in their mind for new songs. deep cut fans would not believe how many of their songs have been written by shiver intensely looking at their gf

Their favorite dessert to share is a brownie with ice cream on top like a sunday, the ice cream is shiver's favorite part while the brownie is frye's. *in hannah montana voice* you get the beeessstt of both worrldds

I think I've unwittingly become the fucking Splatoon Gender Bad News Guy but I would not get your hopes up in the slightest:

The translation in Splat 3 has been kind of Weird, not with the major shit as far as I know (thankfully) but with little things on the side; they have little oddities that would not be fucking there if the English team were communicating well with the JP team, which doesn't inspire confidence in the quality of their already pretty Meh english twitter posts.

I would watch the info on Dedf1sh's Official Bio on their splatbands info section of their website:

If they change Ded's pronouns to they/them in here, THEN I would get out the bottles. Or if they use they/them in the actual game when Side Order comes out.
