Can we just for a moment talk about how underrated non-mage Hawke is?
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for an apostate mage moving up in a world that actively despises them. And this post is definitely not a post bashing people who enjoy mage Hawke more. But as someone who's canon Hawke is a warrior, I find having a non-mage Hawke as your protagonist in DA2 provides such a unique perspective to the game.
Other than being Ferelden, there is literally nothing that is setting Hawke at a disadvantage. All that is at stake in the beginning is having Bethany taken to the circle. And having a pro-mage non-warrior Hawke sticking with people he has no business helping due to his non-mage abilities is such a cool concept.
Speaking of Bethany, I love the sibling dynamic between Hawke and Bethany. My canon Hawke is incredibly protective of both his siblings, and after losing Carver he only grows more protective of Bethany, especially since she's a mage. I love to imagine them as a 'never one without the other' duo. These two will always stick together through thick and thin.
It also makes siding with the mages incredibly impactful. Meredith makes it very clear that it does not matter that Hawke is a mage- by siding with the mages he'd share their fate. And Hawke's response? "So be it."
In conclusion, non-mage Hawke is an awesome protagonist story wise and needs more appreciation.

non-mage hawke is capable of having the weirdest opinions ever abt magic especially when they first arrive in kirkwall. like, to the majority of ordinary people, magic is strange and terrible, unholy and otherworldly, and then hawke’s over here like. well. the magic i know is my father and my sister and i love them. hawke is maybe the only non-mage who could genuinely, based on real experience and with no caveats, say something like “i love magic”, which i think would permanently affect anders’ brain in untold ways. non-mage hawke who never fully bone-deep relaxes except when merrill’s enthusiastically explaining some intricacy of dalish magic, bc they used to nap during bethany’s lessons with malcolm and it’s like they can close their eyes and hear their father’s voice from the next room

Don't know if you remember my ask from like two month's ago, but I wanted to update you; I finished my first playthrough of Dragon Age Origins! Incredible game! It more than lived up to the hype in every way. #zevranstan4life
Started Dragon Age II a couple days later, about 12 hours in so far. It's definitely not as good in terms of a CRPG with how simplified so much of the mechanics are, but I'm still really loving the world and the characters. The lower stakes, more personal scale of Hawke's story as a refugee trying to care for their family has me very invested!
I’m glad youre enjoying!! Dragon Age 2 is my favorite in the series for sure. It has my favorite companions of all of the game. I don’t want to say too much and spoil things for you but one of my favorite dragon age 2 posts of all times uses that quote:
“the love was there. it didnt change anything. it didnt save anyone. there were just too many forces against it. but it still matters that the love was there”
And it is SO fitting. I could make myself cry thinking about all the different relationship dynamics in the group. And all the tragedy all of them have faced. And don’t even get me started on Carver and mage Hawke’s relationship

Godd this wrecks me every time, Bethany having to read that the Amell name was reduced to a cautionary tale, and of course it's magic's fault again

Judith Banters: Aveline
Aveline: You’re a surprisingly good fighter.
Judith: Ah. And your ability to give compliments is as expected.
Aveline: I mean to say you’re tactful. Disciplined. When we first met, I assumed you were a farmer’s daughter recruited into the army to stop the Blight.
Judith: My father was no farmer, and I willingly joined the army a few years before the Blight. I had received a bit of training before then.
Aveline: You have family in the army, then?
Judith: No, Templars.
Aveline: Why would they help—
Judith: Ferelden is a very big, often brutal place. There are still places where people understand community, even the Templars.
Aveline: Well, we’re not in Ferelden anymore.
Judith: No, we’re not.
*
Aveline: So why did you join, considering your … circumstances?
Judith: When I was a girl, I dreamed of being a knight. Foolish, perhaps, but not impossible. Ser Cauthrien was the daughter of a farmhand, and she rose through the ranks, not unlike the Hero of River Dale before her.
Aveline: You still hold Loghain and his lieutenant in high regard? After all they’ve done?
Judith: I can hold a number of feelings towards them, and respect is one of them.
Aveline: But they abandoned us!
Judith: Teyrn Loghain gave his life to stop the Blight. Obviously, something changed. Perhaps I take some comfort, knowing it’s never too late to make things right.
*
Aveline: You would have liked my father. He would tell me tales of chivalry all the time as a girl.
Judith: Of Orlesian make, no doubt. Your name implies as much.
Aveline: (chuckles) Was there any doubt about that?
Judith: If it’s all the same, I prefer my own stories.
*
Aveline: Have you thought about my offer? I think you would make a fine guard.
Judith: As I said, I would prefer to explore other options.
Aveline: What other options besides this expedition? You don’t strike me as the gambling type, Hawke.
Judith: Varric seems confident we can make it work. If that fails, I can beg Meeran for another chance. Or I’m pretty strong, I’m sure there’s plenty of labor jobs.
Aveline: And you honestly find that preferable to the Guard?
Judith: That’s my business, Aveline. But yes.
*
Judith: I understand you and Donnic are to be wed. Congratulations.
Aveline: Thank you, Hawke.
Judith: Mother talks about remarrying, though any bachelors at our door are one she found for me, not herself. I think I would prefer she find someone of her own. I should hate to think she said it so I wouldn’t worry about her.
Aveline: Is that even something you want?
Judith: I … I’m not sure. With everyone going on, it feels impossible. It feels selfish to think of some things.
Aveline: Hawke … you and I disagree on a lot, but no one understands that better than me. You can’t let the weight of the world be your only focus. You need to make time for you and the things you want. And if you don’t know, you need to give yourself time to figure it out.
Judith: I will think on what you said.
*
(Late Act 3)
Aveline: Hawke… when I told you about figuring out what you wanted, I didn’t mean seducing a Chantry priest! Don’t you think that’s inappropriate?
Judith: Sebastian is a priest no longer. I fail to see how that’s more inappropriate than marrying your subordinate.
Aveline : … I am just going to drop this.
Judith: Consider it dropped.

I attempted to replay DAII a few weeks back for the pleasure/refresher of the story and the character arcs but just couldn’t bring myself to do it. Have lost lots of capacity to enjoy game mechanics which extend length of time to engage w story and notwithstanding the dialogue is quite excellent (in a game context) it’s clunky for, say, a story, and the physical/visual staging in character interactions is v dated. (Key Settings are pretty decent for symbolism tho)
and that’s when I realised the first time ever why sometimes fans *do* get interested enough to write full novelisations of a thing.

I like the idea of Hawke's mabari canonically being there with them during the single combat with the arishok part and Varric wonderingly shaking his head from the sidelines (even as his heart is trying to escape through his throat) like 'maker's breath this is so Fereldan it's practically parodic'

🔥 fenris
genuinely have never seen a man’s dialogue so oddly written in fic he would not fucking say that 😭 i got into dragon age via the fandom and i have never been so baffled meeting a character in game. his dialogue is so formal and articulate and well-spoken and it’s concise because each word is thoughtful and he’s enough of a wary strategist to not let on more than he means to say. why did i get made to think he would sound more like red hawke?? v strange. stop making him say fuck
i love fenris he’s well-loved i dont think i have that many controversial opinions... uhh i don’t like his blue wraith haircut </3

idk if anyone has done this before but da2 au where you think at first its a both twins lived au and then find out bethany died and thats actually non-warden amell posing as her. something something escaped with jowan maybe, found her relatives in lothering, sought refuge with them and when bethany ended up dying it was way lower profile for amell to take the place of her cousin than try to get in to kirkwall with them as a non-immediate family member (especially given that leandra is publicly coming in as an amell and theres a resemblance and its known revka had mage kids taken to the circle and im sure theres a bulletin out or whatever for an escaped apostate matching amells description). points if people comment on how ‘bethany’ clearly takes after her mother. leandra is not normal about it. aveline knew the real bethany at least in passing bc of living in the same town and treats this as a reason for her distrust of hawke and co and one of the reason she sabotages carvers application with the guard.
#gamlen has fights with leandra about it and both of them are uncomfortable with the situation in their own ways#if amell ends up recaptured and taken to the gallows cullen is obviously a massive threat to her#im thinking ignore the dai retcons of his character and actually yknow. look at what his creepy dao characterization and position in the#kirkwall templars would reasonably amount to in a person and have him threaten that he can have her exposed as amell instead of bethany any#time he feels like it (and thus get her made tranquil or executed) so its up to her to try to make sure he doesnt feel like it#by doing whatever he wants her to. this is actually slightly more cunning than you would expect out of this guy but he has plenty of#other kirkwall templars to ape this particular kind of plan/behavior from. it would fit really well with a bunch of the canon stuff we see.#and much in the same way that the bethany you end up with as a non-mage hawke is fundamentally a different character than the bethany that#had another mage sibling to grow up with and thus was not as isolated and in a position to blame herself for#i think an amell that ends up in this situation is not the star student of the first enchanter. i mean she couldnt fight well enough to#affect the ogre or heal well enough to save the real bethany. and she wasnt brought on the expedition despite not having leandra's 'leave#your baby sister out of this dangerous trip' happening bc as weird as leandras relationship to a#amell is its still one where if amell could be doing something to try to prove herself useful to the family she would#if she was straight up escaping kinloch with jowan i think she had reason to believe she was more unsafe than usual in the circle#and lacked the 'safety net' of the first enchanter giving a shit about her. so. probably at risk from cullen. hah wow this is a much darker#au than i first anticipated which given the initial concept is 'emotional problems from posing as her dead cousin' centric says something
