Vegas and English : a sociolinguistics analysis

General consensus in the fandom is that in Kinnporsche all the charcaters use English as a tool of deception, Vegas the most.

Now that may be true for all the other characters, but it has been pretty clear for a long time that Vegas is different, because he is essentially portrayed as bilingual.

And so English for Vegas is not a lingua franca, used to communicate with foreign people for business. English is a part of him. And so code-switching has multiple reasons for him.

For those who do not know, code-switching refers to the practice of a multilingual speaker of alternating between two or more languages in a single conversation or situation. 

Sociolinguistically there are different reasons for code-switching, being

to show solidarity with a social group, 

to distinguish oneself, 

to participate in social encounters, 

to discuss a certain topic, 

to impress and persuade the audience

to express feelings and affections

Vegas uses English with the assassin(EP2) to discuss mafia business(reason 4), with Porsche(EP4-EP7) to make himself appear less threatening and to manipulate him (reason 5), with Macau(EP6) to discuss without having others understand them(reason 1), with Tawan(EP10) to talk about the plan(reason 4 again), even with the hedgehog(EP11) to again appear less threatening and to reassure it(reason 5).

Now Episode 13 just highlighted the fact that Pete is the only one Vegas uses English with to express both feelings and affections. 

In Episode 11, the feeling he expressed in English with Pete were for the most part anger,  “What a load of bullshit” and “Who’s a good boy?”. 

In Episode 13 instead Vegas uses English essentially to express the height of his feeling. His love and incredulity first “do you know how sexy you are" and then his desperation "Shoot me" and sincerity "I'm sorry, I'm sorry". 

All bilingual people know that sometimes when we feel too much it is easier to use another language to express ourselves. Because being open is scary, and sometimes feelings are too much. And that is exactly what Vegas feels. 

And he’s so full of emotion it's overflowing everywhere, a dam open that cannot be closed again.

Omg omg okay going off the top of my head here so I’m sure I’m missing so many iconic moments and this list would be entirely different at any other moment in time but let’s go!!! In no particular order:

4. That one video of her at a show in I think Texas where someone gave her one of those duck push toys and she duck walked with it (the video file is too big to attach but it’s on my blog somewhere)

During the ball challenge when they are in the werkroom and Neech is cutting up with Malaysia while she puts her ICONIC crystal gown together and she’s quoting Kennedys iconic trade didn’t like the session monologue but then also right in the middle she interjects “time is of the Jaida Essence Hall” just for me :)

When she doesn’t know how to react to something or what to do she just puts her hand on her hip and pops it I think it’s so cute and funny every time, especially paired with the fact that Anetra is physically incapable of not showing every emotion she feels on her face like you’d think she’d have a great poker face and she says she does but it’s a LIE that bitch is so expressive all the time she gives GREAT reaction

1. When she wins the first challenge of the season and instead of a normal reaction she just throws her arms behind her and screams for like a full two seconds and then has to immediately go “I mean thank you, sorry”

Bonus: every time she does the voice and also that she’s incapable of saying a single sentence that doesn’t either have the word bitch or cunt in it :)

13. what’s a common writing tip that you almost always follow?

oh that's a good question. hm...... years ago, I saw someone talking about why you should avoid referring to characters as "the brunette" or "the shorter one" -- it creates distance, which feels weird if you're trying to build any sort of relationship between the characters. so now I try to use those kinds of epithets very sparingly, only when the detail is immediately relevant to what's going on or if the pov character actually does not know the other character's name

18. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles?

AFTER. I'm dogshit at coming up with titles and I almost always save it for last. usually the only time I can think of a title on my own is if it's something I found very funny while titling a google doc draft (hot dilfs in your area!!1! is an example of this) but otherwise, I usually come up with titles by putting my phone on shuffle and looking up the lyrics to the songs that come up until something feels fitting. it's a pain in the ass, but it did force me to connect greedling with Woke Up New by The Mountain Goats and I will never recover

56. What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on?

not to keep mentioning dialogue, but that's usually what I'm proudest of! I feel like I can usually get a pretty good handle on a character's voice (USUALLY. sometimes it's a struggle) and it comes across best in the dialogue

but the thing is my content hasnt changed at all recently. i post the same stuff i always do. some of these users didn't follow me and never interacted with my posts in the first place, so it sucks that i cant look at their blogs anymore because i was a genuine fan of their content. some of them are people who were mutuals with me and have even interacted with me countless times, saying they love my blog and enjoy talking to me. im just not sure what happened but from my perspective, it feels like a switch has been flipped. one day i was a normal member of the fandom, the next im the social pariah. i just cant help but wonder what i did to earn so much backlash

W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.

Boo hiss pair the spares ships we hate you pair the spares ships.

Aside from that specific trope, there's this pervasive sentiment that pops up a lot in fandom and shipping that's like "these two characters are really passionate and insane about each other, therefore they must inherently be romantically/sexually attracted to one another." Boo hiss again. Personally sometimes I think it's way more fun if characters are absolutely batshit about each other without sharing any attraction. Not always, not necessarily often, but sometimes.

I also personally do not really enjoy fix-it fics, especially not time travel fix-it fics. And given that I adore tragedies, I'm big into multiple fandoms where time travel and/or fix-it fics are super popular.

Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?

The biggest one for me is Miraculous Ladybug lmao. I watched one (1) episode of that show because of the tumblr popularity, and it super wasn't for me, but for some reason every single ML fan comic I see on this website slaps. They're always so fun and good. I love seeing ML stuff on my dash. It's like the only thing I've ever read fic for without knowing the source material.

Lesser examples include Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and DC comics (esp Batman). I have read The Hobbit, seen Star Wars episodes 4 and 5 when I was like 10, and seen The Batman+a small amount of DC cartoons when I was a kid. Everything else I know about these things comes from cultural/fandom osmosis lmao.

1. who makes up your family?  how close are you to them?

"nah i'm just fucking with you i don't care. shit it's been a while which may be.... telling on the latter part... well, there was me of course OBVIOUSLY, my parents i think are still back in the new york QZ, and then there's persey. christ i hope that little idiot is still alive. bean pole buffoon.... no really, he's like... 6'4-6'5. ondria didn't bust her ass for the giggles bringing our sorry hind ends to seattle..... swear to god. ondria knew and DOES know before the outbreak how bad i was with reaching out. better with persey than mother and daddy dearest im afraid." she sighs.

the interviewer motions iryna to continue on, swearing it was pulling teeth alone to get her to come here, they're just questions not the infected.
