what i think REALLY works about dot and bubble is it plays with the genre conventions of doctor who itself. We've seen doctor lite episodes like this, we know how they work. There's person who needs to be saved who gets indirect help from the doctor, maybe they're flawed and learn a lesson at the end, maybe they're part of some flawed society that is just kind of set dressing or ends up being torn down at the end without examination. About halfway through the episode I was ready to brush this off as a fun but predictable classic rtd ep that wasn't really anything special. Then from the the betrayal of ricky September on its like watching a house of cards that has been built the entire episode without us noticing collapse into a perfect stack
“Oh well of course you could see them being racist the whole time” the thing is sometimes doctor who is just like that. RTD EPISODES have historically just been like that, either in that they are microagressions in themselves or have bigoted characters/worlds that go unexamined. And I think this episode performed an absolutely insane self aware slight of hand that relies on both you and the writers knowing that doctor who and sci fi in general has a racism problem. The ending recontextualizes things in the episode you may initially have brushed off as an unfortunate BBC or science fiction moment (all white cast, manifest destiny language) as symptomatic of larger societal issues, thus in turn recontextualizing missed moments of bigotry in the shows own history

Okay I've calmed down enough to maybe put this into words.
Fourteen's ending was so validating to me as an aroace person, specifically because they chose platonic love. Often, QPRs are treated as a last resort, a poor consolation prize for people who can't have romantic partnerships. But Donna has a husband, and while I firmly believe the Doctor is on the ace spectrum, the Newton conversation implies that Fourteen isn't aroace. Despite the fact that he could be in a romantic relationship, the Doctor chooses a platonic partnership. And Donna gets to have both! What's more, her husband and her best friend get along, they aren't jealous or competing for her attention. It's so rare for media to treat platonic relationships as equally valuable and desirable as romantic/sexual ones, and it gave me so much hope for my future.

alright so i was rewatching 73 yards bc i remembered that qr code that the camera lingered on and wanted to see what that was all abt and tho it didnt lead anywhere i got talking w @spooked-skull-studios and we're now going absolutely bannanas
SO. couldnt find anything on the qr code, BUT that means the real focus of this shot turns into kate's red nails
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and of course, being the sane and rational peeople we are, we immediately connected this to the red nails in The Giggle.

ive seen some people saying that the felt kate was acting strangely in this scene and im inclined to agree. whilst im not sure EXACTLY what this implies, this feels like a deliberate connection, reminding us that she very well may have picked up that tooth. again, ive got no concrete ideas on what this implies for the rest of the season, but i thought worth pointing out (to silas, who then told me to make this post lol) and would love to hear where people think this might go

"It's a shame you're not a woman anymore, cause she would have understood." Do you think Thirteen knew anything about letting go. Until the bittersweet end she had her claws dug in everything she could grab
