#no beta we die like shepard

so, like a million years ago (aka over a year, time is a lie, shh, I refuse to double check exact dates) @awaylaughing prompted me for words! LOOK! WORDS!
Camellia (my destiny is in your hands) + Mass Effect (dealer's choice on all else) [OG prompt list]
This is, uh, perhaps more legacy than destiny, but it makes sense in my head. Hopefully it translates? Opening of ME2, F!Shepard, Joker, & Kaidan (with a little bit of Shenko for the tragedy of it all).
All Shepard could hear was her own breath, ragged and stuttering and too sharp in her throat.
For the first time in her life, she hated space, hated the bright lights that blinded her, the fact that the stars were too far away to matter, that her ship was exploding, her people were dying, the enemy was fleeing, its job done, the rest of them too small to matter, and she couldn't hear any of it.
Her heart beat so hard her ears throbbed in time, her breath too fast to match, too small, too shallow, yet she could still hear it beneath the whine of overlapping alarms. Her eyes burned with the flash of almost every alert possible simultaneously lighting up the edges of her vision, her HUD desperate to show her what she needed to know, desperate for her to fix it, help it, help them, fix them, fix everything, but still too dim to show clearly against the flares of lasers and oxygen burning burning burning.
Joker was swearing, the edge of pain clear in his voice, a hiss and a spark just audible beneath the rasp of his voice, and she was reasonably sure he'd just broken through a wall panel to access the system directly. As if he could refuse everything that had just happened, as if he could pilot an escape pod to come get her, as if his will was strong enough to turn around something without an engine or steering.
She almost laughed, felt it catch in her chest. If anyone could, it would be Joker.
“Shepard?” It was Alenko, his voice off-rhythm, unsteady, somehow both too fast and too slow, too low and too loud and yet so hard to hear over the silence around her. “Shepard, can you report? Status,” his voice caught, a swallow she could feel, could hear, “Shepard, please, damn it, Shepard.”
Her comms were still on.
Everyone could hear her breathing, Alenko had heard that almost laugh. Impossible though it seemed, that slight tremor of a breath wasn’t too faint for him, not with the way he always listened, always paid attention.
Especially to her, just as she’d always done the same for him.
She could hear Alenko’s breathing now, steady, let it steady her own, let herself pretend for just one inhale, one exhale, that there was something someone could do.
Something that Alenko could do, her Lieutenant, her XO, the best marine she’d ever worked with, that beautiful studied calm of his backing her up. He’d crossed every t, dotted every i, noticed every misstep around him, just so he could help someone take the next one and keep going…
He’d kept her going.
He’d keep them going.
He was the only one who could.
“Suit malfunction.”
Her voice sounded… normal.
Fucking N training.
She hated Anderson for a moment, almost as much as she hated space. Got her killed, the two of them, and trained her so well along the way that she couldn’t even panic about it, not when it would hurt someone else.
Kaidan.
She had to clench her jaw, close her eyes.
I’m sorry.
She opened her eyes.
“That final attack spread us all in different directions.” Her trajectory was almost exactly the opposite of Joker’s pod. Even if he could manage to steer the damn thing out of sheer fucking spite, he’d never be able to catch up.
Fucking physics. Newton was a bitch, and she’d tell him so herself when she met him.
Soon, now.
“Weaver,” Alenko’s voice was hollow in a way she’d never wanted to hear, especially not between the two of them, not when he was saying her name.
She just barely managed to mute her mic before she made a noise she couldn’t repress, rage and sorrow and cold, something that hurt her ears even more than the still whining alerts, something she couldn’t let him hear, not now, not like this, not as the last thing he’d ever–
She bit her tongue so hard she could taste copper and turned off the alerts so her mic wouldn’t pick them up, ignored the way the O2 sensor flashed as if it wanted to refuse her command.
“Get them home, Lieutenant.”
“Aye, ma’am.” His voice was solid this time, solemn, and she hated to think what it had cost him to put everything else away. “Understood.”
“Thank you, Kaidan,” she whispered. She thought she heard his breath again, just for an instant, something warm and alive and oh so far away, but then she cut her comm lines completely. She couldn’t bear to hear him say good-bye, would not allow him to hear what was going to happen next, what was already happening, the cold and the weight and the effort it took to inhale, the tremble in her arms, the battle she was about to lose to keep herself still, to stop herself from desperately scrabbling at the edges of her suit to try and find some way to fix everything that was broken.
Alenko would save as many of her people as could be saved, she had no doubts.
She just wasn’t one of them.
Good-bye, Kaidan.

okay y'all seemed to like the last one so here's a few more Horizon 3 thoughts:
Aloy won’t die. It would completely upend the series’ themes and just be really nihilistic.
Since Nemesis is a gestalt entity I think it’s a safe bet that we’ll see Sam Witwer, Carrie-Anne Moss, etc again. I’m curious how they’re going to do it because at least structurally, it’s basically a reaper. Maybe it’ll use different Avatars when communicating like the Leviathan in ME3.
It's gonna take some work to make a flashback/dream/vision not contrived but I would love to see Varl and Rost again. I think we deserve that.
Minerva is gonna have its work cut out for it blocking access to both the dormant Faro Swarm and the ZD terraforming system.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Nemesis has some sort of corruption function that becomes the equivalent of the corruption in HZD. It would be a really fun tech showcase if GG uses Zenith nanotech for machine corruption and leans into mechanical body horror.
If we’re going to Ban-Ur I really really hope they do the work to make the Banuk less problematic and more fleshed out as a culture. A quasi-Spartan society absolutely would not survive in an extreme environment, *especially* without megafauna to hunt. The Banuk characters are lovely and well-written; they deserve a society as well thought out as the Utaru or Carja. I’m honestly fine if there’s retcons or revamps to the cultural lore because the whole “outsider barges in and becomes chief” is rooted in racist, colonial tropes and we just don’t really need that imo.
The most recent footage of Death Stranding 2 (also running on Decima) has me SO excited for the visuals. GG’s gonna knock it out. The facial rendering and animation that Kojima Productions are doing looks industry-peak and I’m sure GG’s gonna match that. Aloy’s Gay Panic™️ scene on the beach in HBS is already top-tier nonverbal storytelling through animation. Digital Foundry actually just posted a really cool tech breakdown of the current Decima engine. I’m especially excited about the environmental stuff. The ocean simulations in HFW are already incredible and I hope they increase verticality in the world. I can’t wait to see the Sacred Lands in current gen graphics.
I really love Kotallo’s DIY arm and it’s so so important to his development but Beta and Gaia now have access to Zenith nanotech, maybe give your buddy a sick upgrade hmm?
Speaking of, I can’t wait to see Beta come into her own. She’s one of the best parts of HFW and Aloy’s character absolutely shines in a sibling dynamic.
I wouldn’t get your hopes up for a romance mechanic. Everyone’s feelings on that aside, it would be really odd from a game development perspective to just overhaul part of how the narrative develops Aloy’s character in the last act of the story. Yeah, there are flashpoints but I would argue that the presence of choice in Horizon is smoke and mirrors- cosmetic at best. Kentucky Route Zero (which you should play) does something similar where the player is given a certain amount of control over the substance of individual conversations and scenarios and it does absolutely nothing to alter the plot, by design. I think it’s the same here - this isn’t really a choice-based RPG, the flashpoints don’t really affect anything plot-wise or for Aloy’s character development. Olin is still out of the story, Nil lives, Regalla still dies one way or another. Aloy’s character development is pretty firmly on rails (think Jin Sakai, not Shepard - you get to guide some momentary character reactions but that’s it). I don’t think HBS is a testing ground either - If they were gonna introduce a romance mechanic I think they’d just do it, and not spend two years making a direct continuation of HFW’s main quest and establishing a specific romance hard-baked into the plot, complete with multiple leitmotifs for the character relationship (which is something they haven’t done before afaik) just to introduce a side quest mechanic coming in 5 years. I genuinely can’t think of any game or dev that has beta tested a major alteration to upcoming game mechanics that way - it doesn’t really make any sense in terms of developer resources, and these games are extremely time-consuming to make. I know this is a thing a bunch of people want and I can totally empathize with that! I just think it’s probably not on the table.
I would bet money the series will bookend itself and the epilogue will involve a) the naming of Zo and Varl’s kid and b) Lis’ pendant.
Mostly I'm just looking forward to being surprised. One of my favorite things that Horizon does is use carefully established elements in the world to pull the plot in unexpected directions and keeping the world grounded while they lean into speculative science fiction. I can't wait to see what Guerrilla is cooking up

I had a thought just now while reading some of your ask game responses: so, I get super excited anytime you so much as mention Mezzo, because I miss my baby boy. very much. I'm frothing at the mouth. *coughs* uh my point was, brain went that, → I'm dying → no beta we die like __ tag on AO3 → no beta we die like Commander Shepard. and I felt like I had to share that phrase with you 😂
XD
Just for you, because you are so amazing, here's a scribbly draft of something for Mezzo.
~
“I have a present for you,” Wrex says gruffly.
Garrus’ mandibles flick in mild concern. Even Shepard’s head tilts a warily as Wrex barks something over his shoulder. A few krogan shuffle to clear a path, and moments later a shaman in long, flowing robes makes her way through.
Shepard freezes, staring in open shock.
“Shepard,” she rumbles.
Before Garrus can ask what’s going on, Shepard takes off at a sprint and barrels into her. A startled grumble runs through the gathered krogan as she lowers her great head to reciprocate Shepard’s headbutt, then catches him with one scaly arm and knocks him off his feet. They wrestle, limbs flying, before the krogan pins him to the ground and growls. Garrus starts to reach for his sidearm, but Wrex swats his hand with irritation.
“Idiot,” Wrex mutters.
Garrus is about to protest until he hears the sound coming out of Shepard’s throat.
Laughter. Open, unrestrained, delighted laughter.
“My human whelp,” the shaman says proudly, before offering Shepard a hand to help him back to his feet.
Wrex thunks Garrus on the carapace as he heads towards them, reptilian gaze more than a little smug. “I found her for you, Shepard.”

some quick notes on miranda
(long ass post warning and i didn‘t edit this because my executive function disorder brain won‘t allow it so no beta we die like men)
contrary to what some people might believe, miranda doesn‘t think she is superior to other people because she‘s genetically modified. look what she says here:
‚You should know I‘ve had extensive genetic modification. Not my choice, but I make the best of it.‘
miranda doesn‘t seem to feel guilty for it, because it wasn‘t her choice. but she also doesn‘t feel like she‘s superior for having perfect genetics (which i feel a lot of people accuse her of), because she knows she only has those because her father paid for it. it isn‘t something she can take credit for. i think she knows she‘s got ‚unfair‘ advantages but she doesn‘t dwell on it - she makes the best of it. she‘s not ashamed to point it out, because it‘s just a fact - if other people interpret her stating the facts as her being cocky and feeling superior to others, that‘s their fault for falsely interpreting what she says. i also think she likes to point out how she‘s good at everything because before joining cerberus her whole life she believed she was a failure - her father constantly criticized her and picked her apart her entire childhood, how could she not believe she was a failure at everything she did?
that time when miranda instantly mentions what she is capable of (‚worried about my qualifications? i can crush a mech with my biotics or shoot its head off at a hundred yards. take your pick.“) isn‘t her bragging. it is miranda preemptively assuming that shepard is potentially doubting her qualifications. because her entire childhood miranda was constantly fighting a battle - constantly having to prove herself to her father. so before shepard even gets the chance to express any doubts, miranda makes sure to tell him what she is capable of because she doesn‘t want to be in that unpleasant position again of having someone doubt her. because she knows she is not the failure her father claimed she was.
she‘s still so traumatized from constantly being criticized, that she just instantly assumes shepard is worried about her qualifications. even though there should be no reason why shepard should be worried about her qualifications right from the start without a proper reason. it‘s the mindset abuse victims have.
miranda isn‘t bragging when she mentions her capabilities. she‘s just avoiding being vulnerable, or she is responding to questions - such as that time when she mentions what benefits she had from her modifications because shepard asked. she wouldn‘t have listed it off if shepard didn‘t ask - which is exactly what conceited people do who like to brag.
miranda, in my opinion, even downplays her modifications. when shepard asks what level of modification she‘s talking about she says
‚It‘s very thorough. Physically, I‘m superior in many ways. I heal fast and I‘ll likely live one time and half again as long as the average human. My biotics are also very advanced - for a human. Add to that some of the best training and education that money could buy and well, it‘s pretty impressive really.“
she‘s got far more modifications than just her lifespan, faster healing and biotics. if miranda really were that conceited she could have listed them all but she didn‘t. she gave shepard a quick run down of the most relevant ones (biotics and healing for instance are relevant to mention because it matters in a combat setting). she‘s not even mentioning her genetically modified intelligence here. she doesn‘t mention that until later. note how she also adds her biotics are only strong by human standards. would a person that is so conceited really mention that? if she were so conceited and self obsessed she‘d use every opportunity to get to brag. and she‘d definitely be mentioning something like superior intelligence much earlier if that were the case.
the rumor that miranda thinks she‘s something better because of her perfect genetics is definitely just a myth, and whoever claims she‘s bragging all the time is wrong

I have finally finished this very short character exploration for Jacob! It's not much, but I think I like it.
Thanks to @neonbutchery for the beta reading!!
You can read it on Ao3, or under the cut!
Tumblr media
LETTER TO MY SON
(Character Study | Second Person Referral | Jacob PoV | Semi-Compliant Canon | Past Shepard/Jacob Taylor | Jacob Has Cheated | Newborn Children | Generational Trauma | A Very Light Touch of Past Suicidal Thoughts | Parenthood | The Baby Is Born Before the Battle of London)
You know what’s weird? I didn’t feel much when I saw you for the first time.
I don’t know why I expected to cry. Never been the effusive kind –never been one to invest tears in a cause, no matter how precious. Not how I operate. You’ll learn this about me, in time.
But what the hell, I thought I’d cry because you deserve to see me cry. You deserve to look upon my face, for the very first time, and understand how much you matter. Not just to me –I refuse to play that game with you, that game where your value stays relative to how important I decide you’ll be at any given point. You’re important, because to love you is to deny the world its cynicism, its cry for collapse. Because you’ll be so much, or so little; you’ll just be. You don’t need a reason to be important.
I guess it’s something a death machine could never understand.
Your mom loves you too. She didn’t cry either: she laughed, once she was done screaming. She laughed because she saw my face, and I think she saw the dread that cut my breath off and left my hands shaking. I didn’t realize at the time just how terrified I was. But I don’t know, I might love your mom because she stubbornly refuses to be afraid of me, that I couldn’t stand to hold something as fragile as you, so dependent on my own strength –that I’ll be too scared of my understanding of attachment, presence, authority, and would rather run than ruin you. But she laughed, because she isn’t afraid of the ghosts in my veins, like I am.
She chose to believe I’ll stay. And I chose to believe her.
She’s a smart woman, your mom. Doctor Cole –doesn’t it have a great ring to it? I like pragmatic girls. Brynn told me she carried you in her the second she knew. She held my hand, held my eyes: what do we do? she asked. I think we both knew it wasn’t wise, to raise a child in the apocalypse; potentially to force that child to watch the world ending only so we could have our last burst of joy, and use you as relief from the nightmare no matter what that would do to you. Besides the philosophical concerns, which were more her thing than mine (at least in the beginning), there was the material cost. Could we feed you? Could we keep you warm? Could we promise you that we’d survive the war, stay by your side no matter what, cradle you to sleep when you’d be afraid –because you will be afraid?
No. We could not promise you this. We won’t promise you that we won’t die, that you won’t resent our choice in time. I can’t control this. Maybe this is why my first instinct was fear: I can’t promise you that I won’t leave you behind to deal with chaos beyond what any of us could possibly understand.
But what I can promise is: I will fight for your right to live.
It’s difficult, to figure out when fighting is fleeing, when fighting is devotion, and when fighting is love. Maybe it’s just more difficult for me. The woman I left for your mom, she always seems to know when to fight, what for; grounded and solid in a way that, I think, I could never completely trust. Not that she’s a bad person, far from it. She did hate me for abandoning her though, especially with the entire universe resting on her reconstructed shoulders, restitched from dead pieces we had to pretend were always meant to stay alive.
But here’s the thing: we both were in the death cult. We met in the death cult, kissed in the death cult before flinging ourselves inside of a black hole –and survived it on borrowed time. Both her and me? We’ve been in the death cult all of our lives.
Now, I like a pragmatic girl, right? Shepard fights like she breathes, because that’s why she breathes. They gifted her life back, only so she could burn it again, and again, and again. I watched her body forced back to motion, I watched the scar tissue from the exposure to the vacuum of space –they made her come back regardless. And she agreed to fight, because she can’t do anything but thoroughly offer herself up to others. She will never stop killing herself. She will never leave the cult.
I think Shepard fights for devotion, fights to flee, and fights for love. But the death cult rules her: Cerberus, the Alliance, call it whatever you want. It ruled my own father as well –though my father never fought for love, and I learned that in time, bitterly. And well, it ruled me. Disappearing seemed inevitable. Absence is only complicated for those left behind. My father made sure that I understood this; and when he reappeared? He had taught me about the mantras of the death cult, through presence and absence. And when I met him again, all I could think about was: all of the garbage I went through, willingly... for this?
Maybe this was the first thing that shocked me off my numbness.
Maybe this is why I survived a planned suicide as I willingly followed Shepard into hell.
And Shepard will keep on fighting the selfless fight, the fight of the desperate. And if we survive the end of the world, it will be because of the blood she spills: her own, and everyone elses.
Maybe that’s why I hated Brynn’s idea to give you her name. Not only does Shepard hate me for abandoning both her and the love she thinks she could have given me –but I don’t want you to die for anyone but yourself.
Brynn was in the death cult, too. But she was a skeptic. Scientists tend to live less miserable lives than soldiers: we are told to die for the survival of others, while they are told to live for the sake of nurturing wonder. It didn’t take her much to disentangle me from the little threads still holding me down –barely escaping the clutch of a suicide mission will have you resort your priorities.
I think that, through you, Brynn wants to teach me how to nurture wonder.
You were not born out of selflessness. Sentient creatures are not selfless; this is why we’re sentient. But I have killed for so long. I have compromised myself for ideas that were not worth the pain. But now, here you are.
I won’t fight to hide. I won’t fight at all, if you don’t want me to.
I don’t know if this is how we win against the apocalypse. I don’t know if that yearning for hope is good enough of an excuse. I don’t know if I get to leave the death cult without being haunted by what it might cost you, one day.
All I know is: I’ll be selfishly alive, for as long as I can handle it.
And I will not leave you.

So I shrug. “I don’t know. I mean, I want a kid, but I don’t know. I’m only home during the day, and if they’re young, I can’t just leave them alone at night!” I sigh, and Penny nods. “I want to give them the attention they deserve, but I’m not sure if I can. And I’m not seeing anyone who can help me.” “Have you considered co-parenting?” she asks, raising a brow and stirring her tea.

Words: 46,622
Chapters: 12/12 (Complete)
Summary: songfic based off Mitski's A Burning Hill.
A month after the Windrixville incident, Johnny Cade lies awake in his hospital bed. His wheelchair, brand spanking new and paid for by the long work nights of Darry, Steve, and Soda, sits unused in the corner.
Little did he and the rest of the gang know, the problems wouldn't end after he survived- familial drama, post-traumatic stress, and the ever-looming threat of the trial weigh down on all of them. Not to mention his newfound feelings for his best friend. In short, Johnny Cade is royally fucked, but he's nothing if not resilient.
Or: Johnny's story of recovery, family, and learning to love.

Chapters: 1/2 Fandom: Mass Effect Trilogy Rating: Explicit Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Thane Krios/Female Shepard Characters: Thane Krios, Female Shepard (Mass Effect) Additional Tags: Sex Pollen, but nobody gets laid in the first chapter, no betas we die like Jenkins Summary:
Shepard had no idea what he was about to say, but still she felt the horrible sense that she knew where this was going. He barked out a laugh at her hesitance, but it didn’t sound amused. “It is designed to incapacitate through sexual arousal.” he said finally, his voice lowering. That buzz at the bottom of it ran right up her spine, and she resisted a shiver. “It is not merely distracting, but disabling; victims of the toxin find that they must act on the smallest of lusts.” There was a growing static between her ears, an inability to think. Thane continued “While theoretically not impossible to resist, most find it very difficult.”

these long cold days by dirgewithoutmusic
summary: In the war, Dean holed up in hollows and friendly attics and Muggle pubs. He drew Umbridge the Toad, noseless Voldy confused by the last dozen plus years of wizardly pop culture, the Ministry of Magic with its fingers stuffed in its stuffy ears.
He drew Snape as Headmaster, his sneer easy after seven years of notebook margin practice. Dean drew the Dark Mark over London’s skyline and he left his work nailed up around Diagon Alley, Hogsmeade, Godric’s Hollow. He signed his name. He had things he wanted to say.
There were long days when he didn’t talk to anyone– walking old fields and long roads, sleeping in haystacks. There were long weeks when he only talked to strangers– passersby, shop owners, sympathizers, snatchers who he traded curses with.
He drew the Gryffindor Common Room, hearths all ablaze. He listened to Lee Jordan’s radio show on the crackling airwaves. He drew his little sisters, who had gone to France with his mother and father. He drew faces from the darkened boys’ dormitory– Harry’s long bangs hiding his scar, Neville practicing his dance moves for the Yule Ball, Ron asleep with his head on his thick Weasley sweater, Seamus grinning at him over a three a.m. game of cards.

Rise by Kyra_Neko_Rei
summary: When Voldemort came to kill Harry, Lily met him with a SIG Sauer pistol she bought at a pawn shop. Seems Dark Lords die as easily as anyone else when you empty two clips into them.
Hailed as the savior of the Wizarding world, Lily has a live baby, a dead husband, the personal enmity of most of the Dark Lord's followers, and not the slightest idea how to put her life back together.
Phoenixes have it easy. Burn, die, rise from the ashes.
For humans it's a bit different. Sort of.

there will come a time, you'll see by aloneintherain
summary: They have Shepard’s pie for dinner. Ron and Hermione watch Harry fill up his plate and only start serving themselves when he picks up his fork and starts eating. Neville laughs into his wine glass.
“How are you dealing with their mothering, Harry?” he asks.
Ron opens and closes his mouth for a minute, groping for an excuse. Eventually, Ron says, “He’s just so small, Nev.”
“Hey,” Harry says. “I’m seventeen. I’m an adult.”
Ron shakes his head at Neville. “My best friend is an infant.”
A curse regresses Harry to his seventeen year old self, physically and mentally. He doesn’t recognise this strange peaceful wizarding world, but there are two people he does recognise: Ron and Hermione.

Hogwarts, to welcome you home by gedsparrowhawk (FaceChanger)
summary: “You understand, Professor,” Harry began, after a moment, “that I don’t have my N.E.W.T.s. I never even finished seventh year. beautiful enough for the both of us by dirgewithoutmusic
summary: “You know Professor Lupin was a werewolf?” Hermione said, ten minutes into a very awkward lunch she had asked for in an equally awkward letter.
Lavender pushed a sauteed carrot through a little puddle of pasta sauce. “I think everyone heard about that one. Someone told the papers, or something, right?”
“Er, yes,” said Hermione. “Snape did. Which is what I– I mean, it’s related. Oh, I wish you’d gotten to talk to Remus about this. He was a lovely man.”
“Not as lovely as Lockhart,” Lavender said and she and Hermione spent a moment in wistful remembrance. “God, I feel old,” Lavender said.
“Anyway, Snape,” said Hermione. “Snape and Lupin. When Lupin was at school, Snape would make him a potion that would… tame him, on full moons. He could just curl up in his office and sleep by the fire. If you’re interested, I’m trying to learn how to brew it myself.”
Lavender shook her head. “We’re not friends,” she said. “Never have been. So why are you doing all this?”
Hermione looked like she was trying to say “we’re friends,” but she couldn’t get it out.
