so, like a million years ago (aka over a year, time is a lie, shh, I refuse to double check exact dates) @awaylaughing prompted me for words! LOOK! WORDS!
Camellia (my destiny is in your hands) + Mass Effect (dealer's choice on all else) [OG prompt list]
This is, uh, perhaps more legacy than destiny, but it makes sense in my head. Hopefully it translates? Opening of ME2, F!Shepard, Joker, & Kaidan (with a little bit of Shenko for the tragedy of it all).
All Shepard could hear was her own breath, ragged and stuttering and too sharp in her throat.
For the first time in her life, she hated space, hated the bright lights that blinded her, the fact that the stars were too far away to matter, that her ship was exploding, her people were dying, the enemy was fleeing, its job done, the rest of them too small to matter, and she couldn't hear any of it.
Her heart beat so hard her ears throbbed in time, her breath too fast to match, too small, too shallow, yet she could still hear it beneath the whine of overlapping alarms. Her eyes burned with the flash of almost every alert possible simultaneously lighting up the edges of her vision, her HUD desperate to show her what she needed to know, desperate for her to fix it, help it, help them, fix them, fix everything, but still too dim to show clearly against the flares of lasers and oxygen burning burning burning.
Joker was swearing, the edge of pain clear in his voice, a hiss and a spark just audible beneath the rasp of his voice, and she was reasonably sure he'd just broken through a wall panel to access the system directly. As if he could refuse everything that had just happened, as if he could pilot an escape pod to come get her, as if his will was strong enough to turn around something without an engine or steering.
She almost laughed, felt it catch in her chest. If anyone could, it would be Joker.
“Shepard?” It was Alenko, his voice off-rhythm, unsteady, somehow both too fast and too slow, too low and too loud and yet so hard to hear over the silence around her. “Shepard, can you report? Status,” his voice caught, a swallow she could feel, could hear, “Shepard, please, damn it, Shepard.”
Her comms were still on.
Everyone could hear her breathing, Alenko had heard that almost laugh. Impossible though it seemed, that slight tremor of a breath wasn’t too faint for him, not with the way he always listened, always paid attention.
Especially to her, just as she’d always done the same for him.
She could hear Alenko’s breathing now, steady, let it steady her own, let herself pretend for just one inhale, one exhale, that there was something someone could do.
Something that Alenko could do, her Lieutenant, her XO, the best marine she’d ever worked with, that beautiful studied calm of his backing her up. He’d crossed every t, dotted every i, noticed every misstep around him, just so he could help someone take the next one and keep going…
He’d kept her going.
He’d keep them going.
He was the only one who could.
“Suit malfunction.”
Her voice sounded… normal.
Fucking N training.
She hated Anderson for a moment, almost as much as she hated space. Got her killed, the two of them, and trained her so well along the way that she couldn’t even panic about it, not when it would hurt someone else.
Kaidan.
She had to clench her jaw, close her eyes.
I’m sorry.
She opened her eyes.
“That final attack spread us all in different directions.” Her trajectory was almost exactly the opposite of Joker’s pod. Even if he could manage to steer the damn thing out of sheer fucking spite, he’d never be able to catch up.
Fucking physics. Newton was a bitch, and she’d tell him so herself when she met him.
Soon, now.
“Weaver,” Alenko’s voice was hollow in a way she’d never wanted to hear, especially not between the two of them, not when he was saying her name.
She just barely managed to mute her mic before she made a noise she couldn’t repress, rage and sorrow and cold, something that hurt her ears even more than the still whining alerts, something she couldn’t let him hear, not now, not like this, not as the last thing he’d ever–
She bit her tongue so hard she could taste copper and turned off the alerts so her mic wouldn’t pick them up, ignored the way the O2 sensor flashed as if it wanted to refuse her command.
“Get them home, Lieutenant.”
“Aye, ma’am.” His voice was solid this time, solemn, and she hated to think what it had cost him to put everything else away. “Understood.”
“Thank you, Kaidan,” she whispered. She thought she heard his breath again, just for an instant, something warm and alive and oh so far away, but then she cut her comm lines completely. She couldn’t bear to hear him say good-bye, would not allow him to hear what was going to happen next, what was already happening, the cold and the weight and the effort it took to inhale, the tremble in her arms, the battle she was about to lose to keep herself still, to stop herself from desperately scrabbling at the edges of her suit to try and find some way to fix everything that was broken.
Alenko would save as many of her people as could be saved, she had no doubts.
She just wasn’t one of them.
Good-bye, Kaidan.

Fictober 2023: Day 4
Tumblr media
Prompt: "Do you even know what this means?" Fandom: Mass Effect Trilogy Relationship: Commander Natasha Shepard/Kaidan Alenko, Commander Natasha Shepard & James Vega Rating: Teen & Up Warnings: Head Injury Summary: The Normandy escaped Mars as the Reapers descended, despite Cerberus' best efforts, and now Shepard is left with the guilt of what happened.
Tumblr media
AO3 link: here. Preview below the cut.
Guilt. Dread. Fear.
Each emotion fought for dominance, threatening to overwhelm her as she cautiously carried Kaidan into the medbay of the Normandy.
Guilt because this was what she’d sought to prevent from the first moment she’d walked into her cabin and found his picture staring up at her from the desk. The Illusive Man’s silent threat. He knew what Kaidan meant to her. Her words of defiance on Mars had been the final straw, apparently.
Dread because the bruises around his eyes meant this injury was serious. He’d be lucky to survive this. And it was her fault The Illusive Man had ordered his robot to attack Kaidan. She should’ve protected him better. Somehow.
Fear because she didn’t want to lose him. The galaxy was falling apart as the Reapers descended on them, and her biggest fear was losing this one Human. The only person in the entire galaxy she’d do truly anything to save.
She gently placed Kaidan on the closest bed and stared down at him, still in shock. She peeked through the glass of his helmet. Her heart sank as she noticed the bruises had darkened.

Rebecca Shepard prompts
#13 ‘Can we just cuddle or something?’
Becca Shepard x Kaidan Alenko, ME1 (night before the Ilos mission), 828 words
from this prompt list
Kaidan was startled awake by a body shifting in the too large bed beside him. Wiping a hand over his face in an attempt to get his bearings, the Lt. discovered something nestled against his other shoulder, trapping his arm. As the fog began to lift, he remembered the events that led up to his current predicament.
They’d commandeered the Normandy to pursue Saren through the Mu Relay. He’d come to talk to Shepard and—Nope. That wasn’t exactly true. He’d wanted to know where they stood with one another if the worst happened. Whatever part of him that still cared about fraternization regs had been totally overridden by the part that needed to know the truth. To know if there really was more to them than comrades in arms.
He glanced down at the woman using his shoulder as a pillow. Soft snores emanated from her causing him to grin. Who’d have thought the invincible Commander Shepard had such a cute snore? Slowly, afraid to wake her up, knowing with every minute they drew closer to Ilos, to hopefully ending Saren’s mad plans, he ran a hand lightly through her hair. Before that night he had never seen it down and loose, free from the ponytails and braids she normally wore. Now in the dead of night, bathed in the glow of one of the monitors she never turned off, the sight of a sleeping Rebecca Shepard was one of the most beautiful things he had ever seen.
Shepard snorted softly causing him to pause. Had he woken her by accident?
He waited a moment. When she didn’t stir further, he ran his fingers through the long strands again. This time a sleepy voice muttered, “Supposed to be asleep.”
“Sorry,” he apologized honestly as he kissed her forehead. “I woke up in a strange place.”
“Go back to sleep,” the Commander ordered, still sounding half-asleep.
“Maybe I should leave?” he asked uncertainly even though he really wanted to stay. A part of him still felt the need to offer her an out if she believed what had happened between them was a mistake.  At this point would it really matter if anyone saw him leaving their CO’s quarters given the nature of their current mission? The threat of dying while completing their task or at the very least a court martial?
An arm slung over his stomach kept him from leaving the bed. “You don’t need a way out, Kaidan. I know what we did, and I know what it means to me…and I know what we are going to have to do in a few hours. Until then can…can we just cuddle or something?”
Kaidan had held her gaze during the whole time she spoke. She’d become gradually more awake as she assured him even when she should have been asleep that he didn’t have to leave. And to be honest, he had no desire for a way out this time. It was then that he realized he was all in with Shepard and there would be no going back. Kaidan looked into her eyes and finally admitted to himself that he didn’t want to go back to simply being one of the officers under her command or a friend.
Kaidan rolled onto his side as she shifted against him, allowing his trapped arm to wrap around her shoulders. His other hand came to rest on her hip as she nestled her face against his chest.
Kissing her temple, he said, “I think I can manage cuddling.”
It wasn’t the earth-shattering confession he’d wanted to make but it was something. And for the moment he could work with that. If the mission went the way they hoped it would, there would be time to explore exactly what was between them later.
“Good,” Shepard murmured against his skin as she hugged him tightly. “I think I like cuddling…at least with you.”
As he held her to him almost as if to protect her from the coming battle he murmured into her hair, “With me?”
“Yeah, you make me feel…What did you say earlier? Human?” she sighed, relaxing completely against him. “I can just be with you. You don’t expect me to be the Commander-turned-Specter all the time.”
“Rebecca, you are human, and I’ll do anything to remind you of that,” he promised as he nuzzled her temple with his nose. “I’ll always be here to do that…if you’ll let me.”
“Then that mean you can cuddle with me and…call me Becca, please.”
“Becca?”
“Yeah, it’s what people I really trust call me…and I trust you, Kaidan.”
“Alright, Becca. Let’s cuddle and get some sleep then,” he replied with a tired grin as he closed his eyes. “We need you at your best tomorrow.”
She made a contented noise before she said words that made Kaidan believe that maybe he really could protect her from anything. “I’ll always be at my best with you watching out for me.”
