Danmachi Familia Chronicle Episode Lyu 2
Tumblr media
Author: Fujino Omori
Illustrator: Nilitsu
Label: GA Bunko
Release Date: 13 October 2023
My Score: 5/5
This volume is split into 3 short stories with the first one taking up most of the volume (a good 80% or more). This story fills in the blanks of Lyu's reunion with Astrea before the war game in volume 18 and it's really, really good. Seeing Astrea and Lyu reunite in person is fantastic itself but we also get to see Lyu trying to be a senpai to the new members of Astrea Familia. In particular, there's a blacksmith named Cecil who strongly resents Lyu for abandoning Astrea, and her character arc as a foil for Lyu's is a highlight of the short story. This short story was amazing and satisfying and it's one that I would love to see animated in the upcoming Danmachi V anime. It's probably my favourite story in the Familia Chronicle volumes so far.
The other two stories are much shorter and less relevant to the main plot. The second one features a sweet interaction between Ardee and Lyu. The third story features an event from 5 years ago in which Alise, Kaguya, and Lyra discuss Lyu's future. These stories are bittersweet, and while they aren't as good as the main one, they are definitely worth reading. I can see why they were included in the volume.
So with this volume, the 13 months of Danmachi volumes have officially concluded and it's been a blast. While I may not have read all the volumes in the month that they were released in, it's been great to have a steady stream of Danmachi content. There's been some top quality volumes and it's made me appreciate the Danmachi franchise more. All of the authors, illustrators, editors, and everyone else have done an amazing job this past year and I hope that everyone is able to take a well-deserved break now.
Side note: I did finally listen to the drama CD that was bundled with Danmachi 19 and it was pretty good. In it, Bell finds himself in the Dark Period of Orario where the Astrea Familia are fighting against Evilus. He meets the members of Astrea Familia and Ardee, who he gets along well with as a fellow Argonaut stan. He realises that he is in a position to change the fate of the Astrea Familia and Ardee, and has to make decision about what to do. The story was okay. I enjoyed seeing Bell interacting with Alise, Kaguya, and Lyra a lot and there was a good amount of angst and humor in it. The voice actors all did an amazing job at conveying the feelings of the characters with just their voices. It was a good way to spend an hour but I wouldn't call it a must listen.

The Executioner and Her Way of Life LN thoughts!
Tumblr media
So I ordered this book series (6 books released and translated at time of posting) basically on a whim because it looked like a somewhat serious fantasy story with yuri. But it turned out to not be too bad an idea to act on that whim! I'm going to try not get too spoilery when I do my summary, but that is a little unavoidable, so I apologise in advance! That said, I am going to go into stuff of a spoilery nature at the end. And hopefully I remember everything well, as I only finished this series 2 weeks ago. To to sum up, The Executioner and Her Way of Life is about our protagonist, Menou! The world is your typical Isekai fantasy world with it's own (Kind of weird honestly) power system. Except unlike most isekai, our protagonist is a native resident of this world. She's an Executioner! (Duh..), who's main job is to hunt taboo entities, which largely consists of otherworlers! Yup! this world has a whole profession dedicated to taking out this OP isekai protagonists before they get to cause any trouble in this world. Which has happened on numerous occasions, being disasters leaving large portions of the world uninhabitable. When an otherworlder reaches this point they are called a "Human Error". Which honestly i think is a pretty cool term. Obviously, things are not quite as simple as "all otherworlders are bad guys, and our protagonist is a hero." She herself is constantly calling herself a villain. Not to mention that executioners are trained and employed by this world's leading religious church group, The Faust. That NEVER means good things in a fantasy setting.
So our main characters areeee; Menou, obviously. The self proclaimed pure, proper villainous priestess. her only real stand out quality is that she is a massive unwitting yuri magnet, that basically every female character in this series thinks is beautiful and some more subtly than others are always trying to come onto her. Beyond that she's a little bland. However without going into spoilers, that's not without reason. Momo. Menou's psycho girlfriend. Uh. I mean, Menou's extremely capable and eager assistant. A young girl who is basically a berserker with 0 skill but game breaking strength. Her only interest in the entire world is Menou. Which can be entertaining but sometimes gets repetitive. Ashuna, the knight princess. Who... for a paper thin fanservice reason of a deep love for the human body in peak form, basically always dresses in clothes that really don't cover much more than undies. She's kind of cool but at least by book 6, is as fairly one dimensional as Momo, in that she mostly just likes Momo. Akari. The otherworlder with powers revolving around time. Has literally no interest in the world besides Menou, who is trying to kill her, but is unable to because any time she doesn, her time powers activate automatically and revert her to a state where she was not dead. Her main role in this story is for Menou to get attached to her, becoming unwilling to kill her, and questioning her place in the world, or you could even say... Questioning her way of life? Ha! No that was bad. There areeee more characters but most aren't in it too long. The one exception is Pandæmonium. An all powerful full chaotic evil immortal little girl. She's super freaky, but fun to read. She's the one thing that makes me disappointed that i can't watch the anime anywhere. So things i like aree..... An interesting take on the isekai genre. A sort of villain protagonist. A cool antagonist in Pandaemonium. The occasional art pages by Nilitsu were pretty cool. Half an interesting power system. Why is spoilery though. Sort of yuri vibes. But that leads me tooooo Things i didn't like. Vague yuri vibes that don't really ever go anywhere. There's just lots of girls being all hot for Menou. It's pretty out of nowhere and unsatisfying because there's not even any romance to it, and it's entirely one-sided in every case. So it's kind of yuri bait. Again, the power system. Any time someone uses a spell, there's a load of weird fantasy jargon to read that means very little, and is kind of just space filler on the page, and i started to just skip over it because it was mind-numbing to read. And the whole power system with the earthen and astral vein feels very hand-wavey to me.
So a lot of what i did actually enjoy about this is kind of spoilery, so it might seem like i have more negative to say than positive, but i swear, i did enjoy it enough to buy volume 7 when it comes out!!! It wasn't like, mind blowing or genre changing, nor did it have particularly unique characters, but it is a good time. I'd give it a solid 7/10.
Now! I'm going to try something different here so i can talk a little about what actually happens, so FROM HERE ON IN, THERE WILL ABSOLUTELY BE MAJOR SPOILERS! Just this way i can go into more details about what i do and don't like. So i found the idea of pure concepts being basically added to the world's accessible skill list whenever an otherworlder gets to Human Error status. That's the part of this series' power system. That's very interesting. However with how many different abilities are used, it kind of makes it super iffy how many otherworlders were summoned and then made to lose themselves just so the world's skill list could be increased (yes, i am simplifying this process.) But it's even worse when you consider how many otherworlders are just immediately killed off after their pure concept is deemed worthless, despite them being summoned against their will. But I mean, that's kind of the point. The Faust be super shady. Anyway, definitely an interesting concept. Another thing i really liked was Pandæmoniumin general. Her whole concept of original sin is actually written as genuinely horrifying, like her ability to sacrifice herself to summon herself. So anytime she dies, she just bursts out of the old corpse. It extreme detail. Super gross, but super interesting. I love a villain who is bad for no big grand reason. She's basically driven by the need for entertainment. I like the idea of this. Very cool.
Now some stuff i didn't like. So i said before Menou's character is kinda bland. And they keep going on about how her whole existence was bleached white and all that. Which really makes the whole reveal that she was created by Ivory become more like a "Yeah duh" kind of reveal. Like as early as volume 2 of the LN, i had suspicions that she was at very least, ivory with amnesia. Which isn't that far off the mark.
Okay! That's it for spoilery stuff. Like i was saying, not particularly genre changing, but for sure a fun read. Especially any parts with Pandæmonium. I'm not into gory stuff, but i do love me some unhinged baddies.

"The Executioner and Her Way of Life": An Exciting Yuri Anime
Tumblr media
The Executioner and Her Way of Life tells the story of a priestess tasked with killing humans who are summoned to a supernatural world. This is thrown into jeopardy by Akari, a Japanese girl, whom she escorts and attempts to murder.
Reprinted from The Geekiary, my History Hermann WordPress blog, and Wayback Machine. This was the thirty-eighth article I wrote for The Geekiary. This post was originally published on May 16, 2022.
The Executioner and Her Way of Life is an adventure, isekai, and yuri anime series directed by Yoshiki Kawasaki. The series is based on a yuri light novel series illustrated by Nilitsu and written by Mato Sato.
As a warning, this recommendation discusses spoilers for seven episodes of The Executioner and Her Way of Life, including  some disturbing scenes with themes of suicide, blood, injury, and wanton violence.
Tumblr media
Akari (right) tells Menou (left) that she wants to spend more time with her.
The series begins with a Japanese boy named Mutou Mitsuki (voiced by Yuma Uchida), an offworlder, summoned to a kingdom. He realizes that they also summoned another Japanese girl.
He soon meets Menou who explains to him this world is Japanese-influenced and split into various classes, either as commoners, nobility, Noblesse, Faust, and the Church, with her as a priestess.
In the process, she works with her aide, Momo (voiced by Hisako Kanemoto), to lure Mutou inside an abandoned church. As he begins to use his power which allows him to destroy any object, Menou stabs him, killing him before he causes any damage.
This beginning mirrors the first episode of The Legend of Vox Machina, when the so-called "heroes" die within the show's first five minutes. Menou is a priestess, tasked with killing and hunting down any humans summoned to the world, known as "Lost Ones", even though she knows most have done nothing wrong and are innocent.
This is all thrown into question when she meets Akari (voiced by Moe Kahara), who has, like some humans, forcibly brought to the world the pure concept power of time, allowing her to turn back time and revive herself if someone tries to kill her. This contrasts with her airheaded and clumsy nature. Even so, she is trusting and kind.
The series pulls you in, making you sympathize with Menou (voiced by Iori Saeki). After learning that it appears impossible to assassinate Akari, Archbishop Orwell (voiced by Tamie Kubota) tasks Menou with bringing Akari to a church in Garm, so she can be executed. In a lie which may haunt her in the future, she claims to Menou that they are going there so that she can go "back home" to Japan.
There are interesting dynamics between Momo and Menou. The series implies that they have long been confidentes, almost equivalent to the relations between Sakura and Tomoyo in Cardcaptor Sakura.
In fact, Momo worries that Menou is spending too much time with Akari, who she calls "booblicious". She secretly travels with her to the capital city, and fighting off a warrior princess named Ashuna (voiced by M・A・O). The series also implies that she has a crush on Menou and is jealous her spending time with another woman.
Like Eve's strange motivation with golf in Birdie Wing: A Golf Girls Story, Menou becomes an executioner after following her mentor, Flare (voiced by Yūko Kaida), who has amazing magic skills. She does this even after Flare warns her that she will become a villain.
Tumblr media
Akari blushes when looking at Menou after she gives her a cute hairpiece
The characters are intriguing and the story keeps you engaged. This is especially the case with the growing romantic feelings between Menou and Akari. Menou even offers to strip in Menou's place to fulfill the demands of a terrorist, goes on sightseeing date with Akari, and has, from time to time, protected Akari from threats.
There is more than that. In the fifth episode, it appears that Menou will say goodbye, forever, to Akari, but she discovers a horrible truth. Her boss, Orwell, has been summoning women in an attempt to extract their youth and reverse her aging. She plans to erase the mind of Akari, to use her powers to make her immortal and stop her aging.
Hence, the church is not some beacon of goodness and prosperity like in Maria Watches Over Us, a Class s yuri anime. Rather, it is a place of corruption and malevolence. Orwell engages in human experimentation that is only outmatched by the devilish schemes by the villains in the first season of Sailor Moon. The latter attempt to extract the crystals they need to revive their queen.
The sixth episode reveals a further truth: Orwell destroyed the home village of Menou when she messed with the powers of a "lost one." This infuriates Menou. Akari's feelings for Menou cause her to break down a barrier in her mind, resulting in her use of her powers, before she shoots herself in the head. Before this happens, she is able to weaken the hair ribbons of Momo. This causes her to lose her mind, destroy the palace, and attack the cathedral, resulting in Akari and Menou brought back together.
What this further shows is that Akari is aware of everything. She knows that Menou is trying to kill her, how to cause Momo to lose her mind, and has the implication that she has been there before! There is also continued visions that she has of their future, with Akari causing Menou's death, while seeing Flare coming to kill her.
Luckily for this fictional world, Orwell gets what she deserves: Menou uses Akari's powers to de-age Orwell so much that she dies. Unfortunately, in the aftermath, the Church predictably covers up the reality, with the public told a cover story.
All the while, the warrior princess plays a major part, fighting alongside Momo. Both may appear in future episodes. It is in these episodes that this series also shows how mature it is, with lots of blood spilled and brutality shown on screen. It is almost as blood-filled as an episode of Helluva Boss, where demons contract them to assassinate humans.
There is also the disturbing implication that Menou, according to Orwell, came from nothing, from blank white material. There is the further possibility she came from the human world, where Menou and Akari met in the past, and was later re-formed.

Menou and Momo fighting alongside one another in the show's opening theme
The show's amazing animation is by J.C. Staff. It is a Japanese animation studio which has produced series such as Revolutionary Girl Utena, Azumanga Daioh, R.O.D -The TV-, Sweet Blue Flowers, The Demon Girl Next Door, and Eden's Zero, pull you into the show's world.
The story remains intriguing, as much as the currently airing Spy X Family or Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club. Even so, it continues to be unique in its own way, unlike any other series I've seen.
In the most recent episode, Menou worries that she has failed to kill Akari, who rewound time a few months, and is why she was friendly to her at first. She commits herself to killing Menou once and for all this time. All the while, Menou wants to make sure this happens so that the the "right" person (Menou) kills her, rather than someone else, like Flare.
As they go off on their journey, a reported pilgrimage to a sanctuary, while Menou gets a new scripture from the acting archbishop. In the process, the viewers also see into Menou's backstory. We learn more about she became an executioner.
As the series goes forward, there will be more scenes of Menou and Akari together, along with scenes of Menou and Momo. Menou will continue to pulled between the duty to kill Akari and her hesitation to stay with her, falling deeper in love with her. She even puts her inside the Pandemonium, an inescapable fog, in an attempt to kill her. This doesn't stop Akari, who is aware of everything now, using her powers to go back with Menou, shocking her beyond belief.
Menou continues to be rightly worried that Akari is not far from her power getting out of control. At the same time, there is the wild card: the head of a fringe group. This teenage girl gladly kills someone in a bloody manner in the show's seventh episode and declares that she wants to kill Menou in a pre-emptive attack before she causes "trouble".
All in all, The Executioner and Her Way of Life is must-see for those interested in yuri, adventure, and isekai stories, especially those which go against commonly used tropes. The series is currently streaming on HIDIVE.
The next episode, entitled "Monstrine", airs on May 20, the same day that an English dub of the series will begin airing on the platform.

Danmachi Shouhenshuu 1
Tumblr media
Author: Fujino Omori
Illustrator: Nilitsu
Label: GA Bunko
Release Date: 13 April 2023
My Score: 4/5
This is a compilation of short stories that were released as bonuses previously with the volumes sold at different stores, as well as some that were released for anniversary events. This volume compiles short stories releasesd for the first 17 volumes of the main series. Most of the stories are only about 5 pages or less but there are a few longer stories spread throughout. Usually, for a short story volume, I would go over each story one by one but there are well over 30 stories in this collection so I’m not going to do that. Instead, I will just focus on the highlights.
Volume 3 features a cute short story about Hestia trying to give Bell a lap pillow. Volume 6′s “Shall We Dance? 2″ is a longer story taking place after the Hestia Familia move into their new home. Hestia arranges another banquet to get one more chance at dancing with Bell. Of course, things don’t go according to plan. I liked this one because it had some good moments with Asfi, Mikoto, and Lili and ended in a heartwarming way. Volume 7 has a cute and amusing short in which Ais wants to find some way to congratulate Bell for his victory in the War Game and gets dubious advice from Loki.
Volume 9 has a cute one featuring Bell and Hestia after they take in Wiene. Volume 10 has some heart breaking ones. There’s one with Haruhime mourning after being seperated from Wiene that’s ruined a bit by a comedic gag at the end of it. There’s another one with Mikoto who goes back to Takemikazuchi Familia for comfort. There’s also one with the Xenos trying to make Wiene feel better after seperating her from the Familia. Finally, volume 10 has a longer story showing us the Fels’s diary from when he was observing Hestia Familia. It had a couple of bad gags but was interesting.
Volume 14 has two short stories. In the first one, Bell remembers what Ais told him about the deeper levels of the dungeon. In the second one, Lyu and Bell have to solve their lack of water problem. They hunt a monster and boil the liquid that it drops. I feel like these two may have made it into the anime? I feel like I remember them, especially the second one. Like, I remember Bell and Lyu boiling liquid they got from a monster, and them having an indirect kiss. I could just be imagining it though.
Volume 16 has short stories featuring different characters reaction to spotting Bell and Syr on their date. It also has a longer story showing more of the training that Master Hedin was giving to Bell on how to woo women. Volume 17 has some tear jerkers. There’s a story in which Bell asks Hestia about her hair accessories. She desperately wants to tell Bell that she remembers that he gave them to her but she can’t without putting her Familia at risk. There’s one where Lili questions how unbalanced Hestia Familia’s party is without an ace. She comes close to remembering Bell but she can’t. Tiona wants to read a story about the Argonaut but she doesn’t know why. It’s all very heartbreaking. This one featueres another longer story about Horn and how she’s feeling after her attempt to kill Bell failed.
I think my favourite story was one that was put into the “Others” section of the book that compiled the stories released for anniversaries, manga volumes, etc. In it, Bell has a day off and wants to buy a new book full of his favourite adventure stories because his old one has gotten torn. He runs into Lyu who offers to help him on his search. I’m not a big Bell x Lyu shipper but this one was very cute and wholesome and I really liked it.
Volume 5 had the worst of the short stories. They were all about different characters reacting to Bell seeing the girls in the bath. The worst of them was one about other male characters wishing that Bell had invited them to peep as well. It was gross seeing these guys talk about their comrades as though they were little more than pieces of meat and was very out of character for some them.
Most of the short stories that I didn’t mention are focused on gags or harem/romance plots. If you like Danmachi for those elements and for the characters, it’s worth giving this volume a read. If you’re more into the series for the action/adventure elements, I don’t think you would enjoy this one much. I also don’t recommend reading it before volume 18. Even though that volume’s short stories aren’t compiled in this volume, the final short story published here does take place after volume 18 and contains spoilers for it.
To be honest, I didn’t quite realise just how huge Bell’s harem actually is until reading this volume. There’s even a short story where Bell has a dream about marrying Ais 5 years into the future... only for all of his harem members to interrupt in their own white dresses. Even though I’m not a big fan of the harem/romance and comedy elements of this series, I still had a lot of fun reading this volume. Given how serious the main series has become, it was nice to kick back and read a lighter entry. It was also incredibly nostalgic reading those early short stories. Even though the later volumes in the series have been more to my taste, I do miss the lighter tone that the early volumes had so it was nice to revisit them.
There is a volume two getting released this month, featuring stories from Sword Oratoria until volume 12 and the Familia Chronicle volumes. I’m looking forward to it but, for now, I am finally caught up again with all of Danmachi!

TSUYOKUTE NEW SAGA: l’anime dell’avventura fantasy arriverà nell’estate 2023
youtube
Parlando proprio dello staff, la regia è affidata al debuttante Norikazu Ishigooka, mentre Kenta Ihara (Saga of Tanya the Evil, Uncle From Another World) si sta occupando della sceneggiatura.
Tumblr media
Il character design per l’anime è stato concepito da Nilitsu (A Vampire Has No Heaven, The Executioner and Her Way of Life) e poi adattato da Atsushi Asahi.
Kyle: Yuuma Uchida (Megumi Fushiguro in Jujutsu Kaisen)
Tumblr media
Seran: Hiro Shimono (Dabi in My Hero Academia)
Tumblr media
Lise: Ai Fairouz (Power in Chainsaw Man)
Tumblr media
Urza: Asami Seto (Raphtalia in The Rising of the Shield Hero)
Tumblr media
Sildonia: Minami Takahashi (Quetzalcoatl in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid)
Tumblr media
