Playing in the rain, just playing in the rain
I like taking photos in rain. And of rain.
These two boys near the old temple Beng Mealea, between Siem Reap and Koulen Mountain National park played on unabated by the downpour. Adding some needed spots of colours to the shot.
Why travel during rainy season
Travelling in Asia during rainy seasons does not really bother me. I am neither a beach dweller nor a crazy sun lover. Culture, history and seeing peoples life and living are my main interests. And that is often better experienced during the cooler weather the rain provides. Since people leave their house and covers when the sun is not hammering down.
Normally during rainy season, it rains in spells morning and afternoon, when it is time for a break anyway.
And enjoy the look, feel, sound and smell of rain.

Skal vi bytte?
Mens jeg besøkte Preah Koh første gang ble jeg fulgt rundt av denne unge fyren, som var fascinert av kamera og fotograferingspostering. Etterhvert så var jeg åpenbart stemplet som vennligsinnet.
Så jeg blei tilbudt denne lett frustrerte frosken, med et ønske om bytte mot mitt spennende kamera.
Med litt tegnspråk og mimikk blei det klart at det ikke var så veldig aktuelt, men det var ikke overvettes populært. Stemninga ble dempet av hu mor som kom over og roet ned avkommet. Hun hadde fulgt med hele tida.
Hjelp til skolegang
Det er ikke uvanlig at drifts- og vedlikeholdspersonalet i Apsara-organisasjonen har med seg egne barn under skolealder på jobb. Det er gjerne andre barn der også, og det er alltid noen voksne som holder øye med leken.
De første gangene jeg besøkte Kambodsja var det også sett på som en måte å få barna til å trene engelsken sin på turister, spesielt der skoler var plassert nær noen av kulturminnene. Men nærkontakten har avtatt, både av sikkerhetsgrunner for barna og for å redusere problemet med at tigging ble mer lukrativt enn å gå på skole. Et problem som gjelder i mange land med mye fattigdom.
Det er også et ønske om å få støtte til utdanning inn i mer organiserte former. Donasjoner av skolemateriell til lokale skoler er en enkel og effektiv måte å støtte lokal samfunnsutvikling. Om det nå er penner, blyanter og kladdebøker, eller mer kostbart undervisningsmateriell som tavler og plansjer. Eller sponsing av skolegang for en eller flere elever.
Smarte unger
De gangene unger fortsatt tar kontakt, er det gjerne fortsatt for engelsktrening, eller de vil bli fotografert. Som alle andre unger i verden er de vant til å bli fotografert, og de vil gjerne posere slik de ser i sosiale nettmedia som TikTok og Instagram.
Khmer-unger er både smarte og sosiale, og som regel også veloppdragne og nysgjerrige. Så det å ta fotografier med dem er ofte veldig takknemlig og morsomt.
Personlig sørger jeg for at det alltid er voksne i nærheten som ser at jeg tar kontakt, og kan følge med hele tiden. I tillegg publiserer jeg ikke bilder av identifiserbare barn før etter noe tid har gått. Men om jeg kjenner ungenes foresatte, så deler jeg fotografiene med dem, og lar dem avgjøre om og når de vil dele fotografier av egne barn.

Best bday idea ever!
Nothing like a tropical rainy shower!
Ten years ago, I decided to combine a good year and an anniversary by visiting a new place, in a new country. And a new climate and culture.
Meaning my first visit to Cambodia, Siem Reap and Angkor Archeological Park.
Tropical rain is a fascinating thing, even if you come from a country were rain is fairly normal. Like, in buckets for longer periods of time.
Enjoying it while climbing and exploring temples, arts, architecture and ruins certainly adds to the experience. One of my best ideas and travels ever.
The joy of rain, and how to avoid it
The shower rain that starts - and stops - like someone turn it on and off in an instant, are among the weirdest. During rainy season in Cambodia that sort of rain is more normal than glimpse of sun.
And even if you are prepared, having a rain cover poncho, you are soaking wet before you get it out of your bag and put it on. As the lady in the photo heading this demonstrates. You just have to learn to take it with a smile, as it is sooo Cambodia!
But, admittedly, for those less fascinated by tropical rain than me, the best time to visit will be outside rainy season from June to October. The ultimate time is November and December, since the temperature is more on the cool side, and the visitors are fewer, meaning easier access to sights and adventures.
The sunseeker will enjoy January to middle of April, enjoying Khmer New Year and Sangkran Water Celebrations the week around the 16th. Late April and May are for all those who needs thawing from a long and cold winter.
