Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Relic Hunter Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Nigel Bailey & Preston Bailey Characters: Nigel Bailey, Preston Bailey Additional Tags: Whumptober 2022, no.21: take me instead, Double Drabble, nigel is selfless Series: Part 20 of Relic Hunter - Whumptober 2022 Summary:
Whumptober no. 21: Famous Last Words - "Take me instead."
Nigel trades himself for Preston.
“Take me instead.”
Preston’s eyes widen. “Nigel –”
“Shut up,” Nigel cuts off his brother, not taking his eyes off the two men who were just manhandling Preston from the room. “I’m better with languages, I can translate the texts better.” It took a long time for Nigel to feel as though he could claim that he was better at something than Preston, but it’s true. And now that gift is going to get Preston out of trouble.
One of the henchmen nods and they throw Preston aside.
“Tell Syd…” Nigel’s voice drifts. He only knows what Preston knows, that someone wants a necklace worn by Queen Nefertiti. Sydney can narrow down the location just as well as he can, even without the texts – he’s seen her do more with less. He thinks about having Preston tell her a million things that he suddenly needs her to know and then dismisses all of them. She’ll find him. “Oh never mind.”
Nigel goes with the men. He’s not used to making big gestures, especially when his brother’s involved, but he knows that he’s better equipped to handle this kind of situation despite the two hunts Preston has now taken part in.

Now that we have 10 mythic skins in Overwatch, I was wondering if a list could be compiled for Quirks that could cover each one. Cyberdemon Genji, Zeus Junker Queen, Amaterasu Kiriko, Galactic Emperor Sigma, Adventurer Knight Tracer, Null Sector Wargod Ana, Onryō Hanzo, Grand Beast Orisa, Ancient Caller Moira, and Vengeance Mercy. I'm looking for Quirks tying to the appearances of the mythic skins more than to the abilities of the characters.
If this works, do you have any ideas for an Avatar quirk? Like the ability to just manipulate the 4 elements similar to the Avatar?
Have you got any ideas for a quirk based on the INTJ personality?
Helloo! I was wondering if you could write a quirk for my OC she has a temperature quirk so whatever she touches she can raise and lower the temperature of but I can think of any drawbacks
How would you revise Projection Sorcery to work as a quirk?
Any Quirks for the characters of Jumanji? I'm thinking either peak physical form or fearlessness for Smolder, cartography or geometry sight for Shelly, either pocket dimension or omnilingualism for Mouse, idk for Ruby or Seaplane, a good lock picking Quirk for Ming, wings for Cyclone, idk for Nigel or Van Pelt (though VP should have an eviler version of Anivoice probably), and some sort of rage empowerment Quirk for Jurgen
Would it be possible to ask for Quirks for each of the 13 main characters in Camp Camp? Max, Neil, Nikki, David, Gwen, Nurf, Nerris, Harrison, Ered, Space Kid, Preston, Dolph, and Quartermaster.
Zenyatta Quirk Idea: Harmony & Discord. The user has two metallic orbs that they can apply to themself or others. One increases a person's healing ability greatly, letting them recover from attacks within less than a minute. The other, however, decreases a person's healing ability, making them much more susceptible to being hurt. The drawback is that only one of each exists and if one is active, so too must the other be. If the user wants to heal someone, someone else has to be weakened.
Heyy!! Could i please get a few dependent quirk ideas??? Thank youu!!!
Any chance of a Quirk based on the Look-Away-Inator? It's from the PnF episode Split Personality, and I figured that was more doable as a Quirk than the Molecular Separator.
So that Denki and Shoto marriage is perfect for Virgil, I'm sure you've made a teleportation Quirk that works for Ed, and for Tye you literally made the Tokoyami and Takeyama QM his name, but what about for Asami? This is the Runaways from Season 2 of Young Justice fyi.
I wanna hear about a quirk based on crayon eating
Any quirks based on Jin's side effect from World Trigger? since Foresight exists I think this is a possibility. One I'm kinda thinking about is a quirk that just foresees how you die with little to no context.
Could you help me out with this quirk idea please! My idea is a cloning quirk based on fission. The clones bodies would kind of split off from the user. Each of the clones are capable of independent thought, feeling and action, although they have a mental link, and if one gets hurt, they all feel it. I’d say the clones have half the durability as the user and they can only create 35.
It’s either I go with that idea or have the user create only one clone that has half the durability, and that clone can do the same thing. The clones would have their own autonomy and they would share a mental link.
Idk which idea I should go with, so could you help me decide which I should go for, and if you have any suggestions for the one you pick I’m willing to improve!
Could you make a quirk based on thestrals?
Can you make a quirk based on Unrepair from undead unluck !?!?! Thank you
Flipping the script on the Ben 10 alien asks you get, how about a Quirk for Dr Aloysius Animo? A constant thorn in Ben's side, up until recently I thought his name was pronounced alloy-see-us rather than aloe-ish-us. I think a build-a-beast Quirk or one that mutates and hybridizes animals would be cool!
hello! would you have any ideas for a drawback of a quirk user that can spawn limbs on any surface? the user can use them (and see through them if they were an eye, for example) but they can only be spawned if the user is nearby. i imagine that one of the drawbacks could be that they can feel pain from those limbs, but i can't think of anything else. thank you for all the quirk stuff you do! your brain is very big :D
So I got this idea for a luck based power.
Good luck bad luck is an emitter quirk that allows the user to grant a person they make direct skin contact with to get a bout of good luck such as getting a perfect score on a hard test, scoring a lot of points in a sports event, winning a lottery ticket, etc. However, the bad luck will kick in and undermine the good luck. Going by the examples, they forgot to put their name down and lost a single point, they pulled a muscle after they scored and had to sit out the rest of the game, the wind blew the ticket out of their hand into a puddle. After the bad luck, the effect wears off. The bad luck won’t do anything life threatening, a minor injury is the worst thing that would happen and it only undermines the good luck. User can only affect one person at a time and can only use it again once the bad luck happens and they don’t know when
Dragon and either dark shadow or black whip
Could you do Voyance and Hardening. No idea how this will work but I’m sure you’ll come up with something.
Not sure if you did this before but...Copy X Clones?
Gyrate and Springlike Limbs
Meatball + Incite ?
Black and Storage QM?
Storage and Water Creation?
Decay and Larceny, Twin Impact, or Muscle Augmentation?
What do you think about a qm between decay and electrification?
meatball and stress, fat absorption and somnambulist, or Blood curdle and Whitelime
QM between Incite and Anthropomorph?
Could you do a quirk marriage between Solid Air and Dark Shadow?
Navel Laser x Comic QM?
Hi, Could you make a quirk marriage between Love and Cloud ✨Thanks✨
Glamour + Voice?
It just occurred to me! a quick marriage between Vibration and muscle gain or overhaul, thank you very much!
If you decide to do quirk marriages again could you do glamour and comic?
Solid Air x Dark Shadow QM?
I would like to remind people that I am not taking any kind of requests right now. That means no Quirk Reviews, no Original Quirks, and no Quirk Marriages. So if you see your ask here or sent me anything like that in the past month or so, I will not be covering it and it is currently removed from the ask box.
If you do not see your ask here, I do not have it and I apologize for the inconvenience on that part. You will have to send it again when I open the ask box. Otherwise, I would suggest you take your ask and write it down somewhere so you can send it when the ask box is open. It will still take some time before it is open and I ask for and appreciate your patience during this time.

Visiting the Global Bird Fair and Rutland Water nature reserves 14th-16th July 2023
On Saturday we had a brilliant day in the second Global Bird Fair at Rutland Showground, it was great to see and chat to some familiar faces and new ones and go to some inspiring and entertaining talks. In particular standing out was hearing from Simon King (whom we had met at every British Birdwatching Fair we attended between 2008 and 2019 so it felt good to restart our tradition of having a photo taken with him!) and others about the making of Wild Isles for BBC One and wider conservation issues around some of its stars and landscapes which was fascinating. The ‘This Is Your Life’ for (as we guessed as it was a well kept secret as to who it was) co-founder Tim Appleton was also fantastic, and emotional. It really got to the core of his amazing achievements and what he and others have done for nature as well the importance of having a Bird Fair and the values that it was born from. Nick Baker, Mike Dilger, Jonathan and Angie Scott, Nigel Marvin and David Lindo were other great well known faces we caught up with/saw/heard from. Another Bird Fair favourite of ours watching the BTO bird ringing demonstration was a little hindered by the dramatic stormy weather but we still enjoyed seeing Great Tit and Chaffinch being ringed and it was really interesting to hear about ringing again. All in all year two felt ever more like this event we love and I’ve grown up with and it was sad to lose is back, and I come home feeling inspired and heartened by spending time with inspirations of mine and like-minded people.
A big part of this annual trip for us since 2008 is of course seeing the wildlife in the Lyndon and Egleton Nature reserves at Rutland Water and we visited them on Friday and Sunday respectively. It was sensational to watch the star of the show at both, Ospreys. We got astonishing views of the two adults and three chicks at Manton Bay seen in the rain at Lyndon with a lot of action observed, and got some thrilling views of them at Egleton especially watching for an extended time as one fished which is always spectacular at the end of the day and trip. A fellow raptor also starred as after not seeing one at Rutland Water before this weekend I don’t believe we got some phenomenal views of rustic and agile Hobbies at both reserves. It really was quite something watching them sail through the air, seeing one successfully hunt which was great. Two of my favourite birds that I’m having a top year for. As hoped we saw our first Green Sandpipers of the year at Egleton, we got stunning views of a fair few of these iridescent wading beauties some of my best ever views I loved seeing them. In the same spot as we did on our visits here the last two years we also saw some splendid Yellow-legged Gulls which was charming, also my first of the year taking my year list to 212.

Ospreys at Lyndon
Other bird highlights over the weekend were many Sand Martins and Common Terns seen, Great White and Little Egrets, Great Crested and Little Grebes including seeing both flying which I don’t often see, Shelduck, Egyptian Geese including with young, a trio of warblers Blackcap, Reed Warbler and Sedge Warbler seen well, Teal, Gadwall, Tufted Duck, Lapwing, Oystercatcher, Common Sandpiper, Swallow, House Martin, Swift, Linnet, Stock Dove, Dunnock, Chaffinch, Coot, Moorhen and many Cormorants and Song Thrush heard with Buzzard, Red Kite, Yellowhammer and Grey Heron on a pond in one of the pretty settlements I loved passing through on journeys as I always do Preston seen nicely when going from the hotel to the places and back and Red Kite, Jackdaw and Woodpigeon seen well at the fair.

A young Shelduck at Egleton
As we have had a lot on Rutland trips over the years there was a moment of mammal magic on Friday when thanks to guidance from the kind volunteer we got chatting to in a hide we saw a Water Vole swim back and forth into a channel several times. This was an amazing moment seeing a species I adore and is very close to my heart for the first time in over four years. Seeing this superb and adorable species added gloss to my already personal highest ever mammal year list, and I think it meant a lot to me to see one the same year I finally saw an Otter. Seeing these two stars of the water this year feels exceptional. This was a big unexpected and amazing moment of the weekend.

The wonderful Water Vole
It’ll become tradition us being in Rutland for the start of the Big Butterfly Count what with when Global Bird Fair is and I got to do that on Sunday at Egleton as we saw some more brightness before and mixed in with showers as the weekend went on. Butterflies came into their own with Painted Lady, many Red Admirals it’s their year to have a numbers swell it seems, Small Tortoiseshell, Ringlet, Green-veined White and many Gatekeepers, Meadow Browns and Small Whites ones we got outstanding moments with. We also saw Brimstone, Speckled Wood, Comma and a Small Skipper. Possibly a Brown Silver-line and also my first Bird Cherry Ermine moth of the year with a few of these pretty white ones great to see were nice moth moments at Egleton.

The trip is always good for dragonflies at these reserves that are rich in them at this time of year. Not the weather for it on Friday but on Sunday at Egleton we got some breathtaking flying and landed views of varied coloured Southern Hawkers which was so good. We also saw Brown Hawker a key species here and of my last two weekends, Common Darter, Black-tailed Skimmer which I’m having a memorable year for, Common Blue and Blue-tailed Damselfly. It was a good weekend for beetles and other insects with my first ever Violet ground beetle seen at Lyndon, ladybird at Egleton and the Bird Fair, Common Red Soldier beetles seen well at Egleton, Marmalade and Long hoverfly there as well as fruit flies and bee and wasp. In the hides of Lyndon as I have seen before were some fabulous spiders including Harvestman with one seen at Egleton too.

There were many summer flowers to enjoy on the trip. Some rich and vibrant bits of meadow at Egleton where we enjoyed a wealth of butterflies boasted gems such as bird aka tufted vetch shining in the sunlight, lady’s bedstraw, wild carrot and scabious. Great willowherb, ragwort, St. John’s-wort, terrific thistle, yarrow, self-heal, marsh woundwort seen nicely at Lyndon, herb-Robert, red campion, dark mullein, meadowsweet, dock, forget-me-not, oxeye daisies painting the landscape on the bits of land on lagoon four at Egleton as I enjoyed last year, mallow and so much white clover including alongside chickweed seen in tents on the show ground at the fair were other highlights across the weekend. Finally Rutland, Rutland Water and the surrounding area is very picturesque so it was great to take in panoramic, wetland, water, meadow and rural views with some lovely buildings observed. The changeable and ferocious weather creating a good dramatic background to the landscape this year. Such a fun weekend, I am excited for next year already.

Whumptober no. 22: Pick your Poison - Allergic Reaction.
Nigel really hates boarding school.
“What are you doing, Podge?” Preston calls out across the courtyard. Nigel lifts his head and looks at the group gathered around a bench. There’s five of them, including Preston, and they seem a bit dodgy today. Nigel decides to ignore them – he’s had enough of Preston’s attention lately. The nickname ‘Podge’ is only the latest in a list of things that Nigel hates that his brother does. He does kind of have to walk by them though, and that opens him up to more comments from the older boys. He can’t wait until his brother graduates out of the school.
“Don’t be like that,” Preston says as Nigel walks in front of them. “Come here. We want you to try something.” For some reason it makes the others laugh and nudge at each other. “Come on, Nigel,” he cajoles.
A sigh passes through Nigel’s body, but he gives in. He knows something is up, but he’ll either end up involved in whatever his brother wants now when he has some free time before he needs to be in the kitchens, or later when he needs to be somewhere. Nigel turns towards them and a part of him all ready regrets it. He has reading he’d like to complete, and assignments to do.
“What are you doing?” Preston asks again.
“Nothing. What do you want?” Nigel’s longingly thinking of the text on the ancient scrolls from the Ottoman Empire sitting on the table by his bed. Preston’s friends are hitting each other, and watching Nigel and Preston in earnest.
“That’s no way to talk to your brother.” Preston looks him over, the laughter gone from his face. “You look thirsty. Drink this.” Preston holds out a flask. It looks innocent enough, but then Nigel can’t see inside of it.
“What’s in it?” Nigel asks suspiciously.
“Just drink it,” Preston goads his brother. His tone is familiar – it’s impatience that his little brother is questioning him.
Nigel hesitantly reaches out and takes the flask from his brother. Sometimes it's easier to just get it over with, and Nigel isn't in the mood to drag this on. Preston’s face is mostly impassive but with the touch of impatience he’s all ready noted. Eyeing the boys, Nigel takes a drink from the flask. It’s disgusting, and Nigel immediately feels his stomach churn. He coughs and sputters as Preston and his friends burst into laughter.
“Look at his face!”
“He’s all red!”
“He actually drank it, the fairy.”
“I don’t feel so good,” Nigel says to Preston, clutching his stomach. He feels funny, itchy. His body is too big for his skin. “Preston,” he whines. It’s childish, but right now he doesn’t care. “I can’t –” He stops speaking. It’s like there’s a lump in his throat.
Preston doesn’t even turn around, busy laughing with his brothers at the prank they’ve just successfully pulled off.
Nigel is beginning to panic. He doesn’t know what’s happening, but he’s too hot and the itch is all over his body. His chest feels tight.
“Hey,” one of Preston’s friends say, catching sight of Nigel. “He doesn’t look good.”
“Is he all right?”
Nigel barely hears them. He’s too busy trying to breathe through his mouth and is struggling to get enough air.
“Podge?” The laughter dies from Preston’s face. “Nigel?” he tries instead when he doesn’t get an answer. “What is it?  You’re swelling up.”
“Oh shit,” one of Preston’s friends say when Nigel throws up. As much as this isn’t going to endear Nigel to them, that’s the last thing on his mind right now. He’s just trying not to burst into tears, but it’s getting harder the worse he feels.
He hardly notices as Preston takes him by the arm and starts to lead him in the direction of the nurse’s wing. Preston isn’t speaking, and Nigel is relieved that he doesn’t need to think about his responses. They move inside and down wooden panelled hallways and floors. The air is stuffier than usual, is the only thing Nigel notes before they enter a room with bright fluorescents. Preston deposits him in a chair but he’s there for maybe seconds before he’s being moved into another room and shoved onto a bed. He’s dragging his fingernails all across his skin, which is red and bumpy even as he tries to breathe.
The nurse – he assumes they’re the nurse – is saying something to him but Nigel doesn’t understand, can’t make the words make sense. They pull out a needle and Nigel flinches – he hates needles – but Preston places a hand on each of his shoulders and keeps him in place. Nigel scarcely feels it as the nurse injects him, there are too many other sensations on his skin, and all he feels is itchy and numb.
It doesn’t take long for the adrenaline to work and Nigel just breathes, grateful for the air even as his heart beats at what feels like an alarming rate. He wonders if this is what it feels to have a heart attack. At the same time he feels like he could run a marathon right now, and he doesn’t run. He’d be worried if he didn’t feel better overall.
“All right?”
Nigel looks to his left to see Preston, and what disturbingly looks like worry on his face. He nods. His heart is still too fast, and his breathing is trying to keep pace. He’s tired even as he’s energized and talking seems like too much.
Preston looks down and scuffs the toe of his shoe against the floor. “Good.” He pauses for a moment. “I didn’t know –” he stops and takes a breath. “We just mixed a bunch of different drinks together. Jason learnt about it in America, it’s called swamp water. I didn’t know…”
Nigel stops listening; he doesn’t care. He feels awful and just wants to be left alone. After a few moments, Preston leaves Nigel to it, despite the disapproving look of the nurse who’s busily checking his vitals.
“You’ll be just fine,” the nurse assures him. “Just an allergic reaction. We’ll keep you here for a bit to make sure you’re okay, and I’ll give your mum a call.” The nurse bustles off, presumably to make the call, and Nigel thinks about how he can’t wait to get away from Preston.
