The love they poured into Jiang Hu and Dusk’s animation, good lord.
What Dusk wields is a Jian, a particularly oversized one, in fact, in the style of a Han Dynasty-era design.
Tumblr media
The Sui saga pays a lot of homage to Wuxia films and stories. The Jian, among classic Chinese weaponry, is considered “The Gentleman of Weapons”, and is usually the weapon of choice among many weapon-wielding Wuxia protagonists as it allows for sharp cuts, efficient thrusts, strong deflections, and elegant motions. What makes this straight sword effective at deflections is the fact that China, with its big territory and borders, had access to good quality iron ore (mostly through import or acquisition, their own reserves were not high quality), and thus was able to forge weaponry that was sturdy and durable without sacrificing flexibility, an incredibly important and often overlooked aspect of weaponry.
Another staple in Wuxia is calligraphy and swordsmanship being intimately tied, as precision, focus, and your ‘tool’ being an extension of your body was fundamental. A brush or a sword couldn’t be a tool, it had to be a part of you, before you could call yourself a true calligrapher or a swordsman. “Hero” (2002) and “Crouching Tiger,  Hidden Dragon” (2000) both have iconic calligraphy-into-swordsmanship scenes, and the calligraphers in both of these settings are also the best swordmasters. I am deliberately using these two examples as some of the better known Wuxia in the West, if you look into more Wuxia, you’ll find this is a very common trope. Another trope is the calligrapher being coy or deflective about his or her skill with the sword, a trait that Dusk also embodies:
Tumblr media
If asked about it, Dusk essentially replies “Brush and sword, at the lowest level, open the world’s truths to the wielder, and at the highest level, allow the wielder shape the world and its truths. Am I kidding or am I being serious? Don’t worry about it”. Fitting, given Dusk’s powers that allow her to create pocket dimensions and imbue life into her art, without getting into being able to draw the innermost emotions from within others to create worlds, dreams, and nightmares with these, in the same vein calligraphy invites deep, reflective thought in those who can grasp its essence and beauty. It’s the deflection one would expect from a calligrapher and swordmaster that prefers to splash ink instead of spilling blood. The hermit calligrapher swordmaster is, indeed, a beloved trope in Wuxia.
But in Jiang Hu, it seems Nian has somehow convinced Dusk to do something she doesn’t even do in her capacity of an Operator: Go wild with her sword for a bit. And the animators knew what they had to do.
A Jian is meant to bend:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During Dusk’s demonstration with the sword, if we pay attention, we can see that her blade bends beautifully with some of her more forceful motions. Some of these are merely motions added to the sword for the sake of dynamism -- a technique to better show motion in animation -- but those are exclusive to edgewise bends, akin to smear frames. Note above how the blade bends flatwise. This is deliberate, to mimic how a Jian looks like in reality, a beautifully inspired touch! It happens on certain frames when Dusk can’t deflect and is forced to block:
Tumblr media
And this is what the blade ought to do! This is how one animates a good Jian! It’s a flexible, strong sword! (of course, if you can help it, you don’t block with a sword, you deflect!)
The presence of mind, precision and focus of the calligrapher and swordmaster, as stated, is important in Wuxia, as the true master can tear and sever when they have no other choice, but likewise, the true master must have completely control, as to not give in to the thirst of the unsheathed blade. A beginner can cut with a blade, a master can not cut with a blade. A bit esoteric, if you’re not familiar with the philosophy, but allow Dusk to demonstrate this control:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Those swings are not wild, they are motions full of intent, deliberate and meaningful, and the Jian in the hands of a master is often compared to the wind, and the reason it is considered the Gentleman of Weapons: It must simultaneously be a strong gale that severs, and a gentle breeze that doesn’t harm the world around it, outside of the enemy, not even a simple leaf.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the sparring session with her ink clone, it reflects Dusk’s passive nature, as the clone is the attacker for the most part, with Dusk preferring to deflect, dodge, and only occasionally counterstrike. Funnily enough, much like Nian, it seems one of Dusk’s techniques when she actually has to fight seriously is to manifest multiple massive weapons to attack. Perhaps it is because it resembles Nian’s powers to some degree that Dusk prefers not to do this. Just her clone is able to launch multiple greatswords and spears like it’s nothing. Sometimes a nightmare real is not enough and you have to cut someone open, it seems. All in high heels, because you gotta flex a little, you know?
The attention to detail and motion that they put into these animations shows the deep love Hypergryph has already shown for good choreography and Wuxia before in Who Is Real? and Invitation To Wine, and they even tell us a bit more about Dusk, to boot. You can check this gorgeous animation here, starting at 10:52.
Tumblr media
But it does make you wonder how the conversation between the sisters went in order to get Dusk to participate in Nian’s movie.
“I want you to help me in my movie!”  “No way. Your movies as garbage.”  “But little Dusk’s sick sword skills are the Formula X that will make it work, no one else will do...” *very covertly blushing* “Well, I guess I can at least read your script.”

11 more things to be released regarding Bobo’s new single, soooo. Will I have to make a CPN post for every single one? Lol. Anyway, this style looks a lot like his previous one - Nian. So it is most likely the same designer *coughs* xz *coughs*
Tumblr media
Below are the things that we noticed in this first look, whether it has cpn implications or not.
⋆﹥━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━﹤⋆
• Someone counted the number of raindrops and it’s 88 ( allegedly ). I mean, wtf that level of attention to detail? the belief in numbers and making sure it connects to Yibo? this reminds me of the same person who draws Bobo with the mole in the right places.
• XZ’s history with featuring the rain in his art and photos. 🎨
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Their own shared moment in the rain. I mean, this blurred video/GIF has got to be one of those moments that is loved by the fandom. Put this side by side with LWJ and WWX’s moment in the rain. I mean, i guess most dramas have that “rain” scene but you have to admit, theirs was iconic.
Tumblr media
• Yibo’s own affinity to the rain, holding an umbrella. How much do you wanna bet he will have a concept photo of himself related to this track that is similar to these? ⬇️⬇️⬇️
sidenote : ZZ posting with an umbrella on 520. probably a nod to WYB. ☂️ Also, ZZ as mister umbrella / shiying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know it may seem like we’re just connecting everything to xz because of our cpn-tinted glasses, but the thing is we are operating on the fact that yibo has lots of input on this. I’m not undermining yibo’s creative ability. not at all. we have watched him as a captain on sdc or how he works when doing live performance rehearsals— he is ruthless. a perfectionist. CPNs like this leans more towards ZZ being the designer and Web is the client. ZZ may not even be the one who made the final output and only did consult. It’s just that we notice the similarity in styles and themes. Also because ZZ literally designed his moto suit before, so album art should be relatively easy.
• Some LRLG clues about the rain. tldr: they like talking about the rain. Lol.
WYB "Come to eat with you again when it rains"
XZ "It will rain tomorrow"
WYB "Then tomorrow."
//
WYB “Just after the rain”
WYB "Will it rain tomorrow, let's see"
//
It's raining no matter how busy you are
• XZ answering he prefers rain in his douyin video. prefer sunny vs rainy days : sunny / rainy!
Tumblr media
• more clue about nian and this new teaser’s artist is the same. I mean, most of the digital artists today use procreate but whatever— just leaving this here!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CPN ASIDE, we are all excited for Bobo’s new single and all the content that will be released along with it. Also his NYE performance, which will allegedly be announced tomorrow so stay tuned for that. 💕

FLASH REPORT: Independent Texan Production Company and Animation 'Rooster Teeth' permanently closes down for bankruptcy after 2 decades, RWBY's future in Limbo as 'DillonGoo Studios' steps in
Tumblr media
FORT WORTH, TEXAS -- Warner Bros.-Discovery (WBD) sadly announces to close down the established independent animation studio 'Rooster Teeth' after two (2) decades of digital operation. This moves might be a bitter pill for many to swallow that marks the end of an era for the studio behind a beloved web series 'RWBY'.
Entertainment news outlet ‘Deadline’ revealed that the Texan animation studio shuts its doors, but the popular audio-only podcast known as the ‘Rooster Teeth Podcast’ (RTP) won't be impacted there too soon.
The unprecedented closure for online bankruptcy of 'Rooster Teeth' leaves fans of RWBY in a state of much uncertainty, as the fate of the web streaming series hangs in the balance, following after the old video-sharing platform YouTube in several volumes. However, a glimmer of hope emerges as the torch passed on to a different independent studio, DillonGoo Studios, based in Austin, Texas, United States of America (U.S.A.).
'DillonGoo Studios', led by its Chief Executive Officer, independent self-animator and founder named 'Dillon W. Gu', has rapidly emerged as a prominent figure in the animation community. With strong connections to the RWBY fandom, the studio has garnered significant attention. The potential partnership production between 'DillonGoo Studios' and 'RWBY' opens exciting prospects for the series' future to a new heights. With 'Mr. Gu' stepping into the role as a new show creator, apart from the late original series creator (Monty Oum), fans eagerly anticipate the direction that Volume 10, potentially its final season as 'volumes' may take under a new leadership.
People are speculating about 'Rooster Teeth' (RT) considers to be shutting down, filing for bankruptcy, and selling RWBY to acquire a new IP (intellectual property) to DillonGoo Studios. Some have mentioned that RT encountered financial difficulties and a decrease in the appeal of their animations, possibly influenced by controversial anti-LGBT sentiments, extremist criticism, fouling behavior on social media, and disruptions caused by boycotts against CRWBY members, voice actors and fictional personalities, resulting to delay and secure a new volume. But now, with 'DillonGoo Studios' stepping in, there's hope for the future of the web-streaming series.
If DillonGoo Studios takes the helm for Volume 10 of RWBY and securing a partnership with streaming networks like Crunchyroll or somewhat others (which is our internet media affiliate for 'OneNETtv Channel'), it could signify a revitalization for the beloved franchise. The legal greenlighting of Volume 10 under the banner of DillonGoo Studios opens up avenues for a fresh approach to storytelling, while retaining the essence and spirit of the series that has captivated audiences worldwide.
As RWBY-nian fans eagerly await the future of the show, the partnership between DillonGoo Studios and a streaming platform holds the promise of a bright new chapter for the iconic series. With 'Dillon Gu' at the helm, RWBY may embark on a journey filled with innovation, creativity, and a renewed sense of purpose, ensuring its enduring legacy in the annals of animation history.

AllMusic Staff Pick Cocteau Twins Milk & Kisses
While not their most critically-acclaimed, the dream pop band's final album is a guaranteed delight of ethereal beauty and atmospheric vibes. Some music trivia worth mentioning is the connection to C-pop icon Faye Wong, who covered "Rilkean Heart" (1997's "Huai nian") and duetted with Fraser on a rare Asia-only version of "Serpentskirt." (For more artistic overlap, check out the Cocteau covers on Wong's Hu Si Luan Xiang and Fuzao, and "Yu Le Chang," penned for Wong by Guthrie/Raymonde.)

Yu Sheng (鱼生) or Yusang in Cantonese, meaning “raw fish” in Chinese, is a salad dish comprising thinly slicesd raw fish and various seasonings that are mixed together as diners toss the ingredients. It is a dish usually eaten during Chinese New Year. Traditionally a simple dish with few ingredients, the yusheng recipe has evolved over the decades and now comprises a wide variety of ingredients. Our second yusheng for this Lunar New Year is a small serving of Grand Fortune Abalone Yusheng (S$49.90++) from White Restaurant. In line with the coming Year of The Rabbit, this yusheng comes with an auspicious rabbit ornament.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today, the common form of yusheng is the 七彩鱼生 (Seven-coloured Raw Fish salad) served in local restaurants during the Chinese New Year period. Also referred to as 发财鱼生 (Prosperity Raw Fish Salad) or 新年鱼生 (Chinese New Year Raw Fish Salad), this colourful take on yusheng was said to be created in the 1960s by chefs Lau Yoke Pui, Tham Yui Kai, Sin Leong and Hooi Kok Wai, together known as the “Four Heavenly Kings” in the Singapore restaurant scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ritual of eating yusheng during Chinese New Year involves all the people at the table tossing the salad and uttering auspicious phrases. The dish is deemed auspicious because of the homonymic meanings behind its ingredients, which suggest blessings and good fortune for the new year:  鱼(Yu) is a homonym for “fish” and “abundance”, while 生 (Sheng) means both “raw” and “life”. Together, yusheng implies “abundance of wealth and long life”. In the Cantonese dialect, the dish is known as 捞起 (Lo Hei), where “lo” implies “tossing up good fortune” and 起 (Hei) means “to rise”, again a reference to a prosperous business and thus its popularity with businessmen during the new year celebrations. The ingredients of yusheng vary among restaurants, and one such recipe is presented below along with examples of auspicious phrases that may be uttered as each ingredient is added.
Tumblr media
Step 1: All at the table offer auspicious greetings.
Words: 恭喜发财 (Gong Xi Fa Cai - Wishing you wealth and good fortune) or 万事如意 (Wan Shi Ru Yi - May all your wishes be fulfilled).
Step 2: Add fish, which symbolises abundance or excess through the year.
Words: 年年有余 (Nian Nian You Yu)
Step 3: Add pomelo over the fish for luck and auspicious value.
Words: 大吉大利 (Da Ji Da Li)
Then dash pepper over the ingredients for greater prosperity and fortune.
Words: 招财进宝 (Zhao Cai Jin Bao)
Pour oil, circling the ingredients to symbolise the multi-fold increase of profits and to encourage money to flow in from all directions.
Words: 一本万利 (Yi Ben Wan Li) and 财源广进 (Cai Yuan Guang Jin)
Step 4: Add carrots to the fish, indicating blessings of good luck.
Words: 鸿运当头 (Hong Yun Dang Tou)
Then place shredded green radish on the fish, symbolising eternal youth.
Words: 青春常驻 (Qing Chun Chang Zhu)
Next, add shredded white radish for prosperity in business and promotion at work.
Words: 风生水起 (Feng Sheng Shui Qi) and 步步高升 (Bu Bu Gao Sheng)
Step 5: Add condiments. First, sprinkle peanut crumbs on the dish, symbolising a household filled with gold and silver. As an icon of longevity, peanuts also symbolise eternal youth.
Words: 金银满屋 (Jin Yin Man Wu)
Sesame seeds follow, symbolising growth in business.
Words: 生意兴隆 (Sheng Yi Xing Long)
Add deep-fried flour crisps in the shape of golden pillows, with wishes that literally translate to mean that the whole floor would be filled with gold.
Words: 遍地黄金 (Bian Di Huang Jin)
Step 6: All at the table stand up and toss the salad an auspicious seven times with loud shouts of Lo Hei (捞起) and other new year wishes.
Action: Mix ingredients by pushing them towards the centre, which is an encouragement to push on the good luck to all at the table. Some may lift clumps of the salad as high as possible to symbolise the increase in good fortune.
This Yu Sheng (鱼生) only came with five small pieces of abalones so we enhanced it with an additional can of baby abalones. When we are ready to toss, we found out that the restaurant had mistakenly given us two containers of oil instead of one oil and one yuzu sauce. Without the sauce, there is no sweetness, so sis quickly juiced a couple of Mandarin oranges to replace the forgotten sweet sauce. Overall, not a satisfying eat due to the lack of a crucial condiment.

Hey I'm actually taking you up on the Asian film recommendations. Any genre except outright horror is a go! (:
You've come to the right person (I abhor horror and would never recommend that to anyone)! <3
I will preface this by saying that everyone should watch Fullmetal Alchemist if they haven't already LOL it truly the best anime ever. 10 stars for Arakawa! My second-ranked anime is Naruto, but Kishimoto's depictions of females is laughable at best and downright sexist at worst lmao. I recently binged Spy x Family too, which I really enjoyed!
Off the top of my head, some recommendations I have are:
Ghibli films (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for all tbh, Ghibli never disappoints): Kiki's Delivery Service Whisper of the Heart Howl's Moving Castle Spirited Away Castle in the Sky and the usual suspects :) honorary mention goes to Kimi no na Wa because I was a total wreck on the plane watching that show (and I got to visit the iconic staircase irl that inspired that scene this year, which was a real treat!).
Dramas: 花より男子 Hana Yori Dango (aka Boys Over Flowers; there are also Korean and Taiwanese adaptations of the same) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Goong/Princess Hours (a real Korean classic, also the cast is so attractive) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ King of Baking 🍞🍞🍞🍞🍞 Vagabond (not horror, but there are elements of thriller! the budget for this was insane lmao and it had me so on edge I had to go through the episodes at 1.5x speed hahaha) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Witch at Court ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Business Proposal (had such a fun time bingeing this one with @tsaritsa) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Familiar Wife ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Extraordinary Attorney Woo ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Shooting Stars (the male lead is so my type lmao) ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Little Women (both the movie directed by Greta Gerwig, and the k-drama that came out not too long ago haha!!) ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tearjerkers (includes both films and dramas; this is going to be a long list because this is my ultimate guilty pleasure):
Japanese *1リットルの涙 1 Litre of Tears (warning: the title lives up to its name. make sure tissues are accessible at all times) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Midnight Sun (there is a drama and movie available; the drama lead is played by YUI, who sang FMA's 'Again'!) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Koizora (translates to 'Sky of Love') ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My Rainy Days ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Korean A Millionaire's First Love ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ No Breathing (my friend and I walked out of the cinema drenched in tears lmao the actors really ate and left no crumbs) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Beethoven's Virus (@nightofnyx8 I feel like you would love this, plus the OST makes me cry every time...) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 200 Pounds Beauty ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Taiwanese 那些年 (Na Xie Nian / Those Bygone Years -- I think the official English title was 'The Apple of my Eye') ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Our Times / 我的少女時代 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
As an aside, the movie adaptation of Rurouni Kenshin was actually stellar and the only film adaptation of anime that I personally deem acceptable (let's not talk about the FMA movies... 😂). Another one that will always hold dear to my heart is Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (Cloud was my very first kid-crush before I even knew what that was lmao).
I'm sure everyone has heard of Everything Everywhere All at Once by now -- that was truly spectacular and wacky, I loved it!
Lowkey obliged to recommend Crazy Rich Asians since it was filmed in my hood, but if I'm being brutally honest this movie was probably a 5/10 at best for my bf and I lol, I personally preferred Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby (10 ⭐️s from me). Speaking of Constance Wu, Fresh Off the Boat was really funny (also available on Disney+ I think)!
Most of these should be available on Netflix, if not Youtube/other random online sources should work (and generally have subtitles as well)! Most if not all of the above have AMAZING OSTs as well :')
Happy watching, dearest! 💕 and of course if anyone has any further recs feel free to drop them :)

Everybody should go watch this masterpiece of a fan video on Nian Shilan, Consort Hua (Hua Fei), by Empresses Éternelles on Youtube, it's too good!
(sidenote, but recently I found out that Jiang Xin, the actress that portrayed Hua Fei was one of the actresses who kept her own voice in the final cut and was not dubbed by a voice actress - along with Lan Xi (Shen Meizhuang), Chen Jianbin (Emperor) and a couple of others; Sun Li and Ada Choi were both dubbed. I think it was the right call as Jiang Xin's delivery of the lines is really powerful and it completed her iconic portrayal of the character)

Description:
“First Lower Pandit of the Jiaoren, disciple of the Transformation, former Imago of Ascendancy, in the eyes of the Upper Pandits, we deem you guilty of treason.”
“Treason?! So, that means that…”
“Hereby, from this day onward, until Final Metamorphosis is complete, you are cast out from the Jiao.”
The Grand Hall of Suddhavasa falls silent as the verdict is reached. The Jiaoren girl swivels her head to the jury, sensing no ounce of sympathy from the crowd. No one dares to defy the judgment of the Upper Pandits. And if that judgment believes the Perfect Imago of the Transformation path should be exiled, then she shall be.
To toss away their kin at such short notice — such is the true meaning of the Jiaoren saying, “the husks of one’s fealty remains a stain upon their deepest layers.”

VOICE-OVERS
First Meeting
“My official title is the First Lower Pandit of the Jiao… but… nobody really calls me that. Feel free to refer to me by whatever. Just not ‘fish girl.’ Anything but that.”
Greeting
“Back again! You know… the Jiaoren were believed to grant luck to those who laid eyes upon them. Is that why you’ve returned?”
Parting
“You have to go? Already? Alright… but when you need help, I’m here for you.”
About Self: Memorabilia
“I keep this padlock on me as a memory of someone I lost long ago. *sigh* everything can change in an instant.”
About Self: Yearning
“I miss… me. I was different back then. Very, very different. Life is harder now, but I think that the payoff was worth it.”
About Self: Cost of Living
“Inflation in the Luofu is outrageous! Back in the day, you could get almost everything practically for free! I can barely even afford groceries now. Times sure change…”
Chat: Elixir Seekers
“Death is merely another stage of our existence, life is impermanent for the sake of growth. To go against death is to forgo the teachings of the Transformation and be cast out from Apotheosis. Or… that’s what I was taught, anyway.”
Chat: Childhood
“When I was younger, I used to dream about being a mermaid princess, fighting her way through monsters in the Waters of Worthy Oath to find her true love… But now that I’m older, being a ‘mermaid princess’ sounds a little exhausting.”
Chat: Nightmare
“One time, I had a nightmare that I was being cooked and served up at a snack stall. I swear I felt the burning sensation of the oil in the pan…”
Cheng Wei’s Hobbies
“I make these little fishies and then I sorta bring them to life for a bit. Pretty cool, huh? They swim around and keep me company sometimes. Do you… wanna see?”
Cheng Wei’s Annoyances
“The Jiaolong Gates are sealed off forever and I don’t even know why! But I know that means I’ll never become a Vidyadhara… If I can’t reach Apotheosis, don’t I at least deserve to be a Vidyadhara?”

“On the birth of a new cycle, of the five disciples of the Transformation, three shall ascend to a Lower Pandit. And of five Lower Pandits, three shall be cast out of the path. Forever! Hands down one of my biggest fears. I don’t know what I’d do if I got demoted…”

TRIVIA
cheng wei belongs to a made up species of mine known as the jiaoren (basically mermaids in chinese mythology), who are the descendants of the aeon of transformation (based on the jiaolong). basically, the jiaoren are predecessors to the vidyadhara and by jumping over the jiaolong gates, they’re able to transform into vidyadhara (based on the myth of the longmen gates). a lot of her voice lines mention some lore about the jiaoren that i haven’t explained though so just pretend you know what apotheosis and lower pandits are.
some of her ability names reference elixirs of immortality and also the longmen grottoes.
her kit is loosely inspired by how pearls are made. when a foreign irritant enters the oyster/mussel, the oyster/mussel will create layers of what is essentially their own shell around the irritant as a defence mechanism. these create pearls.
she’s gone through three major redesigns. AND STILL LOOKS UGLY.
