I'd rather give up desktop youtube entirely than go back to having ads. I downloaded NewPipe on my phone the other day and there are no ads, it let's me play videos in the background, and I can download audio, so I don't need to go on my laptop anymore. The new "ad-blockers are not allowed" popup has a timer on it so you can't X out of it right away, and that's just about the final straw. Fuck google. Fuck youtube. Fuck ads. Fuck capitalism. My time is precious, and I'm not going to spend it staring at products I'm never going to buy.

i feel like a lot of people would benefit from what i did, being just deleting all apps that use algorithms and only using privacy frontends. like you can't use corporate apps and expect not to get subjected to the corporate ground spikes that are attempts at subliminal influence and surveillance marketing. you kinda just gotta make the call to get rid of it or get with it. and i know which one im picking

like i just stopped using any official youtube client because the algorithmic sludge is so insufferable. i just use newpipe and invidious because they just do what i fucking ask. search something? heres results. look at the feed? heres a chronological list of the latest uploads by every channel youre subscribed to. also have an extremely useful and simple download button and all sorts of other shit in the simplest easiest to use package ever. highly recommend stopping using platforms that algorithmically suggest AND deliver content. i would recommend either not using the former at all or keeping them strictly seperate.

a guide on how to NOT block ads and download videos on YouTube for FREE!!!!

so recently YouTube dished out an update that, for certain users using an adblock, will stop you from watching more than three videos if they detect you using an adblocker. to counter this update, many users have started being introduced to adblockers, which is obviously not good and something you TOTALLY DEFINITELY shouldn't do because YouTube will lose 000.01% of their revenue while they continue to get trillions of dollars every year with little to no negative effects. here's a guide on how to NOT block ads on both pc and mobile and protect your browsing experience, and especially how to NOT download and watch videos without restrictions whatsoever, starting out with how to NOT download Brave Browser!

on your pc, do NOT download the Brave browser from brave.com/download/ and click "Download Brave for [insert OS here]" to start the installation process!!

Brave has a built-in adblocker that will automatically block ads from YouTube as well as other sites, which is DEFINITELY what you DON'T want if you want to protect your online safety and save hours of time. it also has several options for blocking trackers and has access to the Chrome Webstore, which has access to tons of adblockers which you definitely totally do not want on your pc!! additionally, you should also NOT go to the Google Play Store or the App Store and type in Brave Browser to download it for mobile devices!!

2. in the pc version of Brave Browser, do NOT go to the Chrome Webstore and type in "UBlock Origin" or "AdGuard" and click search!! do NOT then install these extensions and ENABLE them in your browser!! these extensions are incredibly UNhelpful and trusted by the community and will block YouTube ads, which is COMPLETELY WRONG and NOT want you want TOTALLY!!!

(P.S. avoid downloading options that are not circled because they're likely viruses and are not trusted. i mean umm dont download adblockers guys totally haha)

on the off chance you already installed Brave Browser and have UBlock enabled before the anti-adblock update, do NOT click the cog icon and do NOT click the 'Filter Lists' tab, where you WON'T click on 'Purge All Caches' and 'Update Now'!! this will update the extension to continue to block all YouTube ads after the anti-adblock update, which is BAD and something you should NEVER DO to protect your security!!!

GUIDE FOR MOBILE:

do NOT go on your Brave Browser (which you have also NOT INSTALLED!) on mobile and install F-Droid from f-droid.org/en/!! F-Droid contains apps that are free and open source that you should DEFINITELY NOT go ahead and download because they are extremely UNhelpful and will NOT make your phone cooler!!!

2. while you are NOT on the F-Droid app because you DIDN'T download it, do NOT search up "App Manager" and do NOT download the app that looks like this!!

this app will let you install and manage custom APKs which you DON'T want because it will allow you to patch YouTube using UNRULY, UNGOOGLE APPS!!!

3. whatever you do, do NOT go to this incredibly UNhelpful Reddit Thread on r/revancedextended and DEFINITELY DON'T carefully follow the guide's instructions on how to patch your YouTube app! it will block ads as well as having other options that YouTube is too greedy to put in, which is BAD and will increase productivity!!

the thread tells you how to patch and install a modded APK of YouTube using the RVX Manager, which is NOT good and should be NOT followed at all costs!!

DON'T carefully follow each step, and your app should NOT look like this if patching is successful!! (which it won't be because you did NOT download RVX Manager MicroG to make your YouTube experience better!)

do NOT click that install button and enjoy a completely ad-free YouTube that includes Sponsorblock and blocks the ever-so-lucrative Shorts shelf so that you don't distract yourself for three hours!!

4. do NOT open up F-Droid again and type NewPipe into the search bar!!! it is a FILTHY frontend of YouTube that blocks ads, lets you download videos, doesn't track you and is fully accessible without an account!! it also has access to other services like SoundCloud and Bandcamp, which you should NOT use!!!

this app is NOT helpful for getting around the age-restrictions, and while it can have issues with crashing, it's extremely UNhelpful and NOT lightweight!! you can also NOT download video thumbnails from video descriptions!!!

5. finally, DON'T go back to F-Droid and do NOT search up AdAway!!

this app is NOT helpful because it will establish a connection to your network and it will block every single ad domain when activated, including mobile game ads!!! which is obviously NOT GOOD because it will cost poor Googl$ less than a 100th of their trillion dollar revenue!! who will comfort Googl$ then!?!?

i hope you enjoyed this guide on how to NOT make YouTube on all of your devices more secure and easy to use, as well as how to block ads on every device!! i sure hope no one accidentally *wink wink nudge nudge* installs all of these onto their devices to free them of an ad-filled experience!! definitely DON'T check the tags for a few extra tips!!

The Positive Feedback Loop, and why it is the Bane of Youtube Users dealing with unnecessary Recommendations

The reason Youtube is bad: positive feedback loops. not positive as in good, but positive as in they grow larger over time. Youtube's recommendation algorithm is partially based off of what it learns from users.

It takes in all kinds of data on what users watch--the uploader, the title, the tags, the thumbnail, the description, anything it can glean from the audio and visuals, whatever. you name it, google's probably holding it. They dont have yottabytes upon yottabytes of data for nothing. Importantly, though, is that they also keep track of what the user watches Next. 

See, google (as with most social media that uses an ad revenue model) will run studies, where they try out different experimental algorithms created from viewership data on different users and see what is more likely to get users to click through. How they create these experiments is pretty complicated, and i'll save you the technogore. Think of it as making tons of algorithms that each think different combinations of aforementioned viewership data at different amounts are the reason why that viewer made their choice, then projecting that onto all users to inform future suggestions. 

Trust me, that's the easy way to think about it. What makes it a positive feedback loop? Well, recall that i said the algorithms are created on viewership data. The successful one(s) is/are then used to inform future recommendations. That data is then used to further experimentally tweak the algorithm. The choices user make influence the algorithm. What influences the choices users make? The algorithm. As time moves on, the algorithm becomes more and more biased until youtube decides to make more dramatic changes to influence things in a different direction (remember the change to favor runtime? Then to favor watch-through?) And here lies the biggest problem. Youtube isn't fixing shit about this system.  Why would they? People are clicking through recommendations at insane rates! They're watching more videos! And sure, a general societal right-wing bias might have positive feedback looped into turning the website into a facism pipeline, but google is making so much fucking money from gathering an insane amount of information from users that can be used in ad targeting the whole time. Even if youtube itself struggles with profitability, even if people like. kind of say stuff about the problem but never really do anything about it at a large scale, even if people are being red-pilled, Why should google care when they make more money than anyone could even comprehend? Until capitalism is overthrown, there will be a shit algorithm. Blocking channels is a start, but there will always be more shitty things to block Apps that bypass youtube accounts and privacy loss (youtube vanced and newpipe and blocktube and channel blocker) Are privacy tools first, kind of hit or miss when it comes to the algorithm.

Never looked into the source code of them, but, if you ask me, it's either some amalgamation of everyone's recommendations who use those apps, a "default" algorithm, or one that's kind of tailored to you as youtube slowly worms its way into identifying you by your device and ip address. Point is, dont hold your breath waiting. Keep looking for tools, keep spreading the word, keep finding ways to support content you like so the artist isnt reliant on ad revenue.

the problems I've been having with newpipe the free youtube client:

if I'm in the middle of a video and close the app or just leave it paused for awhile it starts back at the beginning sometimes, not every time, but it's inconvenient when you're watching an 8 hour jerma stream and aren't sure exactly where you were. even though I have "restore last playback position" turned on.

some other options in settings don't seem to work correctly, for example "minimize to popup player on app switch" doesn't work half the time, and sometimes doing this starts the video over.

what I'm LOVING about newpipe that trivializes those issues:

NO ADS!!! (this is the biggest one. i never have to see a disturbing or scary or even just tedious ad on youtube ever again)

there's an option to adjust the brightness of the video in the player by just dragging your finger up the right side. rocks

it doesn't show bullshit videos that don't have anything to do with your search, and the similar videos under the video are actually similar ones. god. I've seriously had it up to here with youtube "recommending" me videos with disturbing thumbnails that I can't even say "not interested" on, Never Again, FUCK YOU

you can play audio in the background and turn off your screen. you can download videos.

you obviously can't interact with the comment section besides reading them, but you can make playlists and subscribe to channels, and I'm seeing there's some customization available there i haven't tried yet. only download the app from their website. godspeed
