28 - Growth
'But we cannot knowingly leave someone at the mercy of the Granous!' Lief hissed. 'They will ask him their infernal riddles, and when he cannot answer them they will start biting off his fingers and toes. They will kill him, Jasmine!' 'Better that they kill a stranger than that they kill us,' Jasmine said. And Lief knew that she was repeating a lesson she had learned only too well in the terror that was the Forests of Silence. For a moment he hesitated. He knew that he should not let his heart rule his head in this. But then the piteous cry came again, followed by a scream of pure agony. 'No!' Lief breathed. He started forward. 'Wait! I will go back and fetch the guards,' said Barda, catching at his arm. Lief pulled himself free. 'There is no time for that!' he muttered. 'Come with me or not, as you like.' He began to run, and Jasmine and Barda followed, as he knew they would. DELTORA QUEST 3 Dragon's Nest Ch 7 Dragon Hunt

Some Thoughts on "Good" vs "Getting Better"
When I started Belegarth, I (understandably) had nevet actually fought someone with sword and shield. Pretty predictably, I absolutely sucked at it. And until a few months ago, I didn't realize I had improved.
What made me realize I had gotten better was a bunch of new people joining our ealm. After fighting a few of them one on one, i realize I could, quite reliably, beat theom within a minute or two. Thirty seconds, if i bothered to be aggressive.
That kinda surprised me ngl. I didn't (and still don't) consider myself "good" at sword and board. But I *had* gotten better. That realization gave me pause because I had always conflated the two things before.
Here's my theory now:
Being "good" at something isn't a very good metric. Firstly, it's a very nebulous concept and varies wildly depending on where, who, etc you practice with. Secondly, and maybe this is a personal thing, but I don't have a very accurate grasp. I evaluate "good" differently from a veteran fighter whose criteria is not the same as a first-time Belegrim. Thus also implies a finite level of prowness available and a set definiton? "Good" or "bad/not good" and it's always one or the other.
"Getting better" is uh. Well, I think it's a better way of phrasing. Like, I'm not good (or at least I don't think I am) but I *have* gotten better. You can be as unskilled and clumsy as you want and STILL have gotten better from, say, six months ago. And on the flip side, you can be the best fighter there is and STILL be improving (scary). There's no limit.
And this is kinda more objective, in a way? As in, while there's no set criteria for being "good," you do have a way of evaluating "gotten better." Yeah, that's going to look different for everyone, but it's less theoretical than "good."
So I guess what I'm trying to say is that shifting my view from "I'm not good at this" to "I've gotten better at this" has led me to enjoy myself more. Who wants a bad teammate? Nobody. But a teammate who's gotten better (but is maybe still bad but that's okay)?
I shirk from fights with more experienced realmmates less often now. I ask for advice more frequently. I'm not as discouraged with mistakes I make. I just plain have more fun now, because my focus is not "hide and don't make a fool of yourself" but instead "learn from your mistakes." I'm *allowed* to make mistakes and do stupid things and make a fool out of myself!
"Getting better" is an ongoing process (whereas "good," to me at least, plateaus a bit) and it's okay to be "not good" because you're getting better! It's a work in progress! There's so much room for growth and people to ask for help for! I'm not stuck as "bad" forever! I am capable of growth and change for the better!
Anyways just thoughts.

As they stared, he turned to look after the caravan. 'Nevets only appears when Steven, or someone close to him is threatened. Most of the time he stays within.'
Barda shook his head impatiently. 'There was no-one within!' he snorted. The caravan contained only goods for sale.'
'Not within the caravan,' murmured Dain. 'Within Steven himself.'

harry potter for the fandom ask thing?
Thank you Nonnie!!!
the first character i ever fell in love with: The cat reading a map in front of the Dursley’s house, aka McGonagall!!!
a character that i used to love/like, but now do not: I guess the closer I can get to is Dumbledore, because even though I love his character, I think he’s an awful person, for one very specific reason: no matter the consequences, no matter why you think you should do nothing, you never leave a child live with an abusive family if there’s something you can do about it. Daumbledore could have gotten Harry out of the Dursley’s care when he was a kid, no matter the protection spell, he should have nevet let Harry leave with them. It’s something I didn’t realize when I was a kid, but as an adult, it’s the one thing I can’t forgive him.
a ship that i used to love/like, but now do not: When I was reading the books, I kinda liked the idea of Neville and Luna together, and was sad when Rowling announced that they were married to other people. BUT now that we’ve met Newt Scamander, if his grandson is indeed a good mix of Newt and Tina, I think he might indeed be a perfect fit for Luna!
my ultimate favorite character™: Can I say two characters? Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley. Hermione, because I feel a very strong bond with her character, I identified to her a lot so she’s always up there. And Ginny because she’s just the best character, I especially love her development in book five, but she’s just plain awesome and I love her.
prettiest character: Ginny, and Sirius when he was young (come on, every time Harry sess pictures and stuff he’s just amazed at how beautiful Sirius was so…yeah)
my most hated character: OMG SNAPE I HATE HIM SO MUCH omg I can’t stand the quote “Always”, it stands for a high school obssessive crush who was never resolved, he bullies kids for no good reason (there’s never a good reason to bully someone btw), and he was a literal wizard-nazi!!! Also, Umbridge because “I must not tell lies”
my OTP: Oh boi. Hinny, Wolfstar and Jily are up there, and then Romione brcause these two are just perfect for each other.
my NOTP: I don’t even know their fic name but SnapexLily. Also, Dramione because even though I understand why people like it, I don’t like to ship them for the same reason I don’t like SnapexLily: racism, the use of slurs and the constant bullying. I don’t mind people shipping them, but I’m not interested in these ships. Oh and Snapexany of the children he bullied.
favorite moment: (I changed the ask a bit to make it fit) The whole reveal of the many plot twists at the end of Prisoner of Azkaban, when they’re in the Shrieking Shack and they learned about literally EVERYTHING in like 20 pages, I love it!!!! Also, Hinny first kiss after the Quiditch match.
saddest death: it’s a tie between Fred and Sirius, both deaths crushed me completely so I can’t chose but they were awful.
favorite book: Prisoner of Azkaban
least favorite book: I’m thinking probably Chamber of Secrets? Not that I on’t like it, but if I had to chose a least favorite, it would have to be this one
character that everyone else in the fandom loves, but i hate: Okay so I don’t hate him, I think his character is interesting but… Draco. I just don’t unerstand why so many people love him so much? (and I genuinely think casting Tom Felton has a lot to do with it because the dude is a literal cinamon roll) There is potential for redemption for him in the future, but he’s a racist bully in the books and I don’t like him.
my ‘you’re piece of trash, but you’re still a fave’ fave: Gilderoy Lockhart. He’s sooooo annoying but OMG re-reading Chamber of Secrets is so funny thanks to him XD
my ‘beautiful cinnamon roll who deserves better than this’ fave: Ron OMG people who mistreat Ron can come for me anytime, I will protect him with my own life. He’s sweet, he’s kind, he’s extremely funny and a very loyal friend, and honestly, I think people who criticze him only remember the butchered movie version of his character.
my ‘this ship is wrong, nasty, and makes me want to cleanse my soul, but i still love it’ ship: I don’t think I have this kind of ship in this fandom, sorry! Here’s the next best thing, a ship I low-key regret shipping because I like the canon ship better: FredxHermione. I looooove their dynamic together, and even though I’m really happy that Hermione ends up with Ron, I see a lot of potential in their relationship and I’m a sucker for the guy always joking/super serious girl dynamic they could have had.
my ‘they’re kind of cute, and i lowkey ship them, but i’m not too invested’ ship: DeanxSeamus, also BillxFleur
send me a fandom and i’ll tell you…

Deltora Quest review: The Maze of the Beast (Series 1-6)
Tumblr media
The Maze of the Beast... The book of the Amethyst and the Glus.
It is also a book that introduces my mother’s favorite character (one that I completely forgot after my first reading), Steven/Nevets. I can’t help but imagine him as one of those typical Australian surfer dudes.
SPOILERS AHEAD! SPOILERS AHEAD! SPOILERS AHEAD!
It wasn’t my favorite book, when I first read it. I had forgotten a lot of things about it afterward. At the second read it still wasn’t my favorite because I’m not a big fan of pirate like settings (except when it involves supernatural like in Pirates of the Caribbean). But now, after a few more reads, I’m starting to love it. In a very different way from the other book.
The villains especially are interesting. There is the introduction of the wonderfully creepy and paranoia-inducing Ols. The nightmarish Glus in his nightmarish maze, a reconstruction of the Minotaur myth, to the point of the string trick being re-used. And the pirates.
The pirates are especially interesting. Ever since the beginning of the series, people talked about the bandits and pirates in Deltora, but we actually never saw them fully until this book. That’s here that we see that the villains aren’t all magical beings, monsters, or even servants of the Shadow Lord. There are villains in Deltora, and they are the Deltorans themselves. Normal humans, traitors to their land, only led by greed and cruelty. The Shadow Lord reign wasn’t just an invasion: it was releasing all of the worst Deltora had in its heart.
It is also a funny thing that the pirates have a very paradoxal relationship to the Shadow Lord’s plan, considering how unrelated they are. On one side, they are certainly the most efficient servants of the Lord’s will. They captured the heroes, nearly kill Barda, and they even steal the belt! The Belt of Deltora, that none managed to even touch in the past five books! They just take it like if it was nothing! (Well, it’s also due to the fact that we learn later how the Belt actually burns everything evil, but still). And on the other side, as the heroes point out, the pirates keep interfering and meddling with the Shadow Lord’s plans, putting obstacles in his ways, breaking the Ol’s perfect plan, and even giving to the heroes full access to the forbidden zone containing the Amethyst.
It’s also a book about more of the resistance, but curiously I never liked them much, and I still don’t. Doom never interested me much, even though he is an interesting character, the other are just supports with the minimum depth needed, there’s this new character of a cruel jester that is just plainly unlikable. The only one interesting in this group is Dain but... well, we have read the end of the series, haven’t we?
But I still like the sea-side setting, and sea-related monsters. Big thing for me. Plus I just rediscovered the description of the polluted and diseased river Tor, and I just love it! All this time Rodda played with the idea that evil changed and destroyed the land, with the Forests of Silence being crushed by the vines, the city of D’Or turned into the Lake of Tears, the plains of the rats being bare of all life, the forests of the Dread Mountain becoming savage and overgrown... But the image of the Tor river hits the spot for me. Maybe because I saw so many polluted rivers, and even live near one... Maybe.
And, of course, Emily has to put again a gem-related message throughout her entire book. The Amethyst is the stone of Truth, and this book is all about it. The Ols that are the monstruous embodiment of deceit. The constant fear of treachery of the resistance. The Ol’s plan to lead the heroes to a false dead end. Jasmine disguising herself. Discussions about Doom’s true identity, the heroes having to hide their quest, let lies be spread, lie to Dain... In this book truth and lies mingle so much that it becomes painful, just like the giant at the bridge foreshadowed in The Lake of Tears.
I wonder however how the next book will play out in these little gems-analysis because the Diamond represents not one but two notions: purity and strenght.

HOLY SHIT!
Ok, so I’m at work, minding my own business, when suddenly completely out of the fucking blue comes this thought:
The Opal Territory is the land of cryptids.
Think about it. The land of Deltora has got some weird shit, but the weirdest shit seems to come out of the Opal Territory. Like Steven and Nevets, their mother the Queen Bee (I can’t remember if that’s her name, it’s been so long since I’ve read the books), the psychic triplets.
ALL OF THEM, were born in the Opal Territory.
Even Fidelis acknowledges this. Like when Steven and Nevets show up, he’s like woah, wtf are those guys. But then Lief says they’re from the plains, and he’s just like, “Oh, yeah that makes sense. Opal Territory produces some weird shit.” He’s been asleep for years! That means this isn’t a recent thing, this has been going on for centuries! What the fuck is up with the Opal territory.
Sorry for how incoherent and weird this whole post is. The thought just completely blindsided me, cause I haven’t really thought of Deltora Quest in months, maybe years. Now it’s opened the floodgates, so expect some more ideas and headcanons.

I’m 99% sure I’ve mentioned this theory before but
Doom and Barda are unusually tall because they spent the majority of their childhood and adolescence in the palace, where they received good and plentiful food from Noradz, and had a varied and nutritious diet
Steven/Nevets, Tom and Laughing Jack are tall because they grew up on the Plains where there is fertile country. The Plains are the furthest place from any Sister, so they likely did not go to bed hungry
The Torans are tall because they can just magic up their food apparently so they never needed to worry about starvation like the rest of Deltora
Lief is shorter than Barda and Doom because he spent the majority of his childhood and adolescence in invasion-era Del. Del was essentially on the brink of starvation throughout this time, and the situation did not improve until Lief was eighteen and well past the time when he might have continued to grow
Jasmine is short because she spent the majority of her childhood and adolescence in the Forests of Silence. Though she no doubt tried her best, it is likely she often went hungry and/or did not live on a fully balanced diet (particularly in winter when fruits and berries would not be as plentiful)
Lindal is tall because she’s Lindal

wish we got more of doom hanging out with lindal and steven (and nevets) aka big boi squad as i fondly call them
(there's a little bit of them in DQ2 when doom finds out that lief and co have gone underground and returns to del with lindal, steven and nevets)
and then i couldnt help but draw barda too lmao. he is an honourary part of big boi squad BUT not actually part of it (because i think it's funny). he is part of the squad by marriage and thats all. he's lindal's husband thats it. he's a big boi but they dont care 😂
and jaslief,, for scale??

Tumblr media Tumblr media
(tap for quality)
‘His family is... unusual, but of the Plains nonetheless. I am sure that he would be willing to help. He—and his brother.’
Lief’s heart sank. ‘Steven?’ he asked faintly.
Doom’s face creased into a mocking smile. ‘And Nevets. For you cannot have one without the other.’
Return to Del // Ch 4
requests open until the end of March :D

I have had a friendly argument with @sisterofthesouth about this- is Laughing Jack’s real name Jack, James, or something else entirely? Ava and Tom never actually refer to him by name (remember when they talk to ‘Ava’ about her brothers, it isn’t actually Ava). So we have to go off other clues
I tend to think his real name is James Gant. He reacts so strongly to Lief calling him by this name-
“You cannot win, James Gant,” he said softly.
Laughing Jack flinched. “Do not call me by that name,” he snarled.
Why would he flinch if James is a false identity? It is not like he feels guilty for what he did as Captain James Gant. There is something else that name means to him- personally, I think he reacts this way because it reminds him of who he ‘used to be’ before he was consumed by the conman Laughing Jack
If we go with this, then Tom, Ava and Jack actually have a surname- Gant. We know of only one other family in all of Deltora that has a surname- from Steven’s sign, we know that he, Nevets and Queen Bee have a surname starting with ‘B’. Interesting that these two families are linked in this way, because they are parallels in many other ways- Lief even notes their similarities in Sister of the South. Both families are from the Plains, both have siblings who are ‘linked’ (physically/mentally), both sell goods to travellers... both actually have siblings in a Deltora where everyone is an only child
So I think that, if any families are going to have surnames, it makes sense that it is the two that appear to come from the same region, and appear to share some similarities in background and culture
Like I said, others have disagreed with me on this. What does everyone think?

Names used in Deltora/Pirra
Look what I just found on my computer- a list of every name used in the three main DQ series, Tales of Deltora and Secrets of Deltora. I clearly used to have no life (and possibly still don’t)
I’m throwing it into the internet void in case someone wants to use it to develop their own Deltora-ish names for ocs or something?
Missing: names from Star of Deltora, and all the ‘linked’ series (Rowan and Three Doors) (Three Doors & Star of Deltora didn’t exist when I first made this and I’m too lazy to do it again)
Note #1: Aliases/false names etc are included. They must sound like relatively ‘normal’ Deltoran names or the disguise would have failed.
Note #2: If the person had two or three names:
If there is a clear nickname this has been removed (eg. Han & Jack instead of Red Han & Laughing Jack).
Surnames (!!!) have been removed (eg. Hank instead of Hank Modestee).
If no distinction can be made, all names are included (eg. Ulay Bran).
Note #3: I have provided loose indications of the territory/land the name is found in/most likely originated from.
I’ve only indicated the territory/land if we are fairly sure where the person’s family was from (eg. we do not know where most of the guards originated, so their names are not definitively names of Del origin).
Royal names get their own category because they were likely influenced by both Del and Toran naming styles.
This should be taken with a grain of salt- some names pop up across the continent (eg. Jack & Marie variations like Marilen, Mariette, Maria) so obviously names aren’t exclusive to certain regions.
However some regions (esp. Dread Gnomes & Jalis) do have very distinctive naming styles and some regions seem to favour certain types of names (eg. Del liking flower names for women- Jasmine, Violet, Iris, Rosalyn). It shows the diversity of the naming across the continent, which is why I have included it.
I had not included the territories in my original document so I’m doing it from memory and the internet (oops). Feel free to message me with any mistakes or missing names.
