NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has produced the deepest and sharpest infrared image of the distant universe to date.

1 - Deep Field: SMACS 0723
NASA’s Webb Delivers Deepest Infrared Image of Universe Yet
Status: 1st Image Full Released 7/12/22 ~10:39am EDT
Known as Webb’s First Deep Field, this image of galaxy cluster SMACS 0723 is overflowing with detail.
Thousands of galaxies – including the faintest objects ever observed in the infrared – have appeared in Webb’s view for the first time. This slice of the vast universe is approximately the size of a grain of sand held at arm’s length by someone on the ground.
This deep field, taken by Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam), is a composite made from images at different wavelengths, totaling 12.5 hours – achieving depths at infrared wavelengths beyond the Hubble Space Telescope’s deepest fields, which took weeks.
The image shows the galaxy cluster SMACS 0723 as it appeared 4.6 billion years ago. The combined mass of this galaxy cluster acts as a gravitational lens, magnifying much more distant galaxies behind it. Webb’s NIRCam has brought those distant galaxies into sharp focus – they have tiny, faint structures that have never been seen before, including star clusters and diffuse features. Researchers will soon begin to learn more about the galaxies’ masses, ages, histories, and compositions, as Webb seeks the earliest galaxies in the universe.
2 - Exoplanet: WASP-96 B
NASA's Webb Reveals Steamy Atmosphere of Distant Planet in Detail

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has captured the distinct signature of water, along with evidence for clouds and haze, in the atmosphere surrounding a hot, puffy gas giant planet orbiting a distant Sun-like star.
The observation, which reveals the presence of specific gas molecules based on tiny decreases in the brightness of precise colors of light, is the most detailed of its kind to date, demonstrating Webb’s unprecedented ability to analyze atmospheres hundreds of light-years away.
While the Hubble Space Telescope has analyzed numerous exoplanet atmospheres over the past two decades, capturing the first clear detection of water in 2013, Webb’s immediate and more detailed observation marks a giant leap forward in the quest to characterize potentially habitable planets beyond Earth.
3 - Stellar Death: Planetary Nebula NGC 3132

Some stars save the best for last.
The dimmer star at the center of this scene has been sending out rings of gas and dust for thousands of years in all directions, and NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has revealed for the first time that this star is cloaked in dust.
Two cameras aboard Webb captured the latest image of this planetary nebula, cataloged as NGC 3132, and known informally as the Southern Ring Nebula. It is approximately 2,500 light-years away.
Webb will allow astronomers to dig into many more specifics about planetary nebulae like this one – clouds of gas and dust expelled by dying stars. Understanding which molecules are present, and where they lie throughout the shells of gas and dust will help researchers refine their knowledge of these objects.
4 - Interacting Galaxies: Stephan's Quintet
NASA's Webb Sheds Light on Galaxy Evolution, Black Holes

Stephan's Quintet, a visual grouping of five galaxies, is best known for being prominently featured in the holiday classic film, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Today, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope reveals Stephan’s Quintet in a new light. This enormous mosaic is Webb’s largest image to date, covering about one-fifth of the Moon’s diameter. It contains over 150 million pixels and is constructed from almost 1,000 separate image files. The information from Webb provides new insights into how galactic interactions may have driven galaxy evolution in the early universe.
With its powerful, infrared vision and extremely high spatial resolution, Webb shows never-before-seen details in this galaxy group. Sparkling clusters of millions of young stars and starburst regions of fresh star birth grace the image. Sweeping tails of gas, dust and stars are being pulled from several of the galaxies due to gravitational interactions. Most dramatically, Webb captures huge shock waves as one of the galaxies, NGC 7318B, smashes through the cluster.
5 - Star Forming Region: NGC 3324 In Carina Nebula

This landscape of 'mountains' and 'valleys' speckled with glittering stars is actually the edge of a nearby, young, star-forming region called NGC 3324 in the Carina Nebula. Captured in infrared light by NASA's new James Webb Space Telescope, this image reveals for the first time previously invisible areas of star birth.
Called the Cosmic Cliffs, Webb's seemingly three-dimensional picture looks like craggy mountains on a moonlit evening. In reality, it is the edge of the giant, gaseous cavity within NGC 3324, and the tallest 'peaks' in this image are about 7 light-years high. The cavernous area has been carved from the nebula by the intense ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from extremely massive, hot, young stars located in the center of the bubble, above the area shown in this image.

25. invention
“I’ll have to find a place,” Azriel’s voice echoes in the empty hallway, bleeding into open cells and rebounding off stone walls. His boots cause some larger-than-actual crunching echoes as he makes his way over debris and stone, pebbles screeching beneath his heels. Some steps behind him, Elain’s toed-footsteps lightly echo behind him as she picks her way after him. He glances at his shoulder back at her. “Within the week,” he promises.
Elain looks around her as she follows.
Azriel strays into an empty cell, once holding a nightmare plaguing too many souls and causing too many travesties. He’s probably put it away himself. Now, who knows where it is, or what it has become.
He can find out, he realizes. Shadows help, sure, but now…
He glances at Elain when she follows him inside, her clever soft eyes flickering over nooks and crannies, and the darkness of corners.
She breathes in, her fingers lacing together loosely before her.
“How are you holding up?” He gently asks, the question still and heavy, and sinking into the stone around them.
“All-right,” she murmurs, trailing a slow-stepped path towards the stone bench in the wall. “You won’t need a place, you know.”
He crosses his arms behind his back. “Can’t keep using Hewn City anymore, can I?”
Certainly not, being a foreign court as it is now. To them. Elain’s eyes fall to the ground, her mouth parted slightly.
“And we can’t have my work where we live, can we?” He shrugs, studying the way she holds herself. It’s been only a day and half a day, and he’s practically seeing the exhaustion weigh down her shoulders, appreciates that she’s even letting him see it.
“You won’t need it,” she finally says, looking up and turning to hold his gaze. “Torture. You wont need cells or jails. That’s in the past.”
He remains silent for a while. Slowly blinks. “Elain, you know I can’t,” he quietly points out, not without muted sadness. “You knew that before. I told you my work has inescapable aspects you’re best to turn a blind eye to.”
She calmly stares back. “I’m not Rhys.”
Azriel’s face falls. “Yes, I know. And I’m thankful. But you knew what I am and what I do long before you agreed to have me.”
“We won’t need torture in our court because we won’t need to physically extract information from adversaries.”
“Elain, I’m the spymaster,” he quietly says.
“And High Lord.”
High Lady and High Lord. “And you know, inevitably there is always a need for it.”
Elain steps closer to him. “I’m not Rhys, Azriel, because I’m not going to have the chance to spare you from resorting to it and not take it.”
His body stills while his mind races.
“What?” He softly breathes.
Her eyes flicker between his, a surety as steady and firm and unyielding as the rock which she’s become High Lady of. Unyielding as The Prison she’d ripped the curses and spells of the ages off of. Cursebreaker, her sister is known to be. Lady of Death, the morbidity follows Nesta like smoke from a fire. But Elain. Elain is the bitter cold that strips dead leaves off branches, the autumn breeze revealing colors hidden in trees, the change that brings about spring, and the woman who cups her hands around things and brings out their truer, gentler, honest form.
Standing before her is a testimony of it. Married to her. Around her stands the firm structures of a court once grand, ruined and transformed into a prison of its own people, but now. Now. Ripped clean and bare to allow the change back in. Like taking down rotten wallpaper and treating infested wood, removing curtains and floorboards. The rot spreads, but the roots are hidden deep and safe, yet not far from the gardener’s reach.
“You won’t need torture, because we’ll do things together,” she takes his hand, and something in his chest leaps. That thing, like an excited firefly, having appeared with the union of their powers, flutters in his chest. Perhaps not a mating bond, but it’s an honest bridge between two opposites who’d managed to bring about a connection between day and night, pause time in that transitionary period where the sun sinks and the moon rises, where twilight is an evermore dusk of colours and the sun and moon meet for a period in the sky.
“My sweet secret,” he breathes, pressing his forehead to hers. “Sometimes it is inevitable.”
Her brows furrow together and she leans into him. “Not with us,” she whispers the dangerous poison of hope in his ears. “Your shadows and my sight can make something all-revealing. I’ve Seen it. You’ll never have to spill blood; what your shadows cannot reach, I can predict. I: the things that will be, you: the things that are, and together: the things that were. We can listen to the stone and earth, the sunlight and darkness, what can the living mouth tell what they cannot report?”
His breath has ceased. He feels like she’s stripped his self clean of armor and thorns. Azriel’s jaw trembles before he clenches it and steps back, sliding his hand out of her own, and putting enough distance between them by strolling to the cold wall.
It’s ironic, a thing must be noted, to find himself standing in a cell, on the cusp of a personal transformation, to be free yet a prisoner of his own lifestyle, and now offered a never-before-dreamt-of shot at freedom.
He squints at the stone, if only to suppress the haziness in his eyes, clenching his jaw and pursing his mouth.
To be spymaster—High Lord—without the redness of his hands. To be good, with the chance to repent. To live in the aftermath, bask in the golden light of a new era without his burdens.
I can be good, he thinks, somewhat devastated with the possibility.
He straightens, clearing his throat lightly while holding his hands behind his back. He looks up at the ceiling, thinks: I’m no longer in the cell I chose the same way he thought: I’m no longer in a cell when they dropped him off at Windhaven as a child, eons ago.
Azriel steps quietly around the cell, his eyes lowered to his boots, feeling Elain’s gaze on him. Until he looks up, meets her eyes that brings about a breathlessness in him related to too many reasons.
“No one’s ever loved me to the point of invention,” he confesses hoarsely, trying on a smile that is fleeting and shaky on his lips, his eyes watery and the little false chuckle that leaves him failing in hiding how unfathomably shaken he is by her offer.
Elain’s own eyes water, a shaky laugh leaving her.
He bites on the insides of his cheeks. “You really mean it,” he realizes.
She nods.
He chuckles, discreetly wiping his eyes with a dusty cuff. “Goodness, you really make saints out of monsters.”
Her brow’s furrowed as she holds back what is in her the same way he is. “I’ll need help tracking our saints down, we can’t have our citizens alone in the big wild world, can we?”
“No,” he manages, before a shaky laugh escapes him conjoined with an identical one of her own. “What have we done, Elain?”
She grins, her eyes glimmering. “I do believe you loved me to the point of inventing a court that will let us be together.”
His cheeks are damp, round with a grin that is bright and joyful and happy as it has never been before.
“My Lady,” he bows with a flourish and a grin.
“My Lord,” she curtsies with a giggle.
And their unanimous muffled soft laughter echoes in a place meant for eternal misery and despair, now a promise where things like hope and love are the tunes breathed into the air like the sound of a sweet violin melody, and there is no more room for fear. Only the quietness of day bleeding into night, and that calm effervescent feeling in between.
