Was thinking about my comfort films today and that led me to thinking about a L&C Nerve AU where Lucy desperately needs to get out of her abusive home. She's got an admission into a good university in London but doesn't have the funds to pay her way since her mother steals all her paychecks. Normally camera shy and extremely averse to attention, she tentatively signs up for Nerve initially as a Watcher while Norrie plays and eventually switches to Player when she realizes its a good way to make money that her mother can't take from her. Her friend George thinks its a terrible idea, there's always a catch to these sort of things, but Lucy's got no other options and takes the plunge.
Through her first dare she meets a handsome and mysterious stranger who only goes by Lockwood. The Watchers like them together and the two keep getting paired up. Lucy is fast developing a crush on the guy which seems reciprocated too despite how fast things are moving. But Lucy also notices something is extremely wrong when Lockwood keeps accepting the more reckless dares when its his turn but tells her to accept the less dangerous ones. Eventually there's no choice, though and he starts to jump to shield her in the dares. She calls him out on his recklessness and he doesn't deny it. She just can't figure out why.
George finally gets a hold of Lucy and tells her Lockwood is sus as hell since he doesn't exist anywhere online. He deep dives into the dark web for his research instead only to find Lockwood is actually Anthony Lockwood, who made local headlines buried deep about the last game of Nerve and how someone died playing it. Lockwood was at the scene of the crime.
Lucy feels betrayed and is ready to forfeit but finds she's unable to. Instead she's ready to go to the authorities but Lockwood keeps stopping her.
When she demands why, Lockwood finally tells her the truth: there is no way out. Either you win or you lose everything. Lockwood's only living family, his sister, died because he played the game last time. He was foolish and didn't realize until it was too late and when he tried to tell someone, Jessica paid the price.
He's playing the game all over again but this time with a very marked death wish. He had intention to survive til the end, ready to meet a gruesome death via some reckless dare until he met Lucy. He couldn't give up the connection he felt between them but also realized she was fast becoming a crowd favorite putting her at more risk by becoming key contender for more and more dangerous dares. Since Lucy was stubbornly unwilling to forfeit the dares herself, the only way he could think of to protect her, was to stay by her side and accept the more dangerous dares as they came so if push came to shove, he could give her an excuse to quit while getting his penance at the same time.

Less than a week before I turned 13 years old, I got to see my first PG-13 movie, and also actually got to see it in a movie theater which was actually one of the rarest things in my life. The southern theaters $5 summer movie Tuesdays. Even that was also a rare occurrence for my family. My parents didn't want the kids to correlate driving all the way to town=watching a movie.
But this summer I got to finaly go to a movie. Only reason was though we were in the process of moving. I was in a constant state of mellow fake thankfulness and sadness. I didn't want too seem like it was my parents problem we were moving, it was mine. But my aura must had gotten to my family no matter how hard I tried to hide it.
We had left my childhood home and the small railroad town, and the about 8 girlscout friends I had with it. Saying goodbye to your objectively best friendships ever does that to you. I needed something to be exited about. I needed something to do. We were staying at my grandparents house before we got on the road officially to move, no wifi, no towns close by, no neighbors, and absolutely no books. If you ignore the bible. Farmhandling wasn't exactly a 12 year olds game either.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I remember watching the trailer on YouTube and seeing the ads on Wattpad during the summer. The trailer looked awesome, it looked adult. Picturing a night out to remember. The ads had neon lights and cyber aesthetics that were never seen before. A cityscape decorated in neon and glitter. The marketing was sooo fresh at the time! This is before "euphoria lighting" or "bisexual lighting" was a thing. I had never seen anything with Emma Roberts. I had seen her face from AHS pictures on Tumblr and Pinterest so I just KNEW she was cool. Shes now one of my favorite nepotism actresses. Everything about this movie was cool. I KNEW I had to watch this movie. I even lied to my parents saying it was PG instead of PG-13.
There is no way they didn't know it was PG-13.
But they let me go watch Nerve.
My mom drove me 2 hours into town to the nearest movie theater with my sister's. A dinky little 4 room theater off the highway with a parking lot that was larger than a malls. The carpet was short and faded blue, with occasional brown spots which are probably stains now that I think about it. It's been bulldozed now, closed down like a month after. I was handed $15 and told to buy the ticket myself, even though my mom would be watching something in another room with my sisters. After getting my ticket I remember walking in and sitting down in the front row. I expected there to be a lot of people, it was the opening day of the movie. I remembered seeing how many views the trailer had got, and being astounded that the movie theater had NOBODY in it. The only movie theater within a 50 mi radius. That astounded me. I had a secret movie no one would ever know about.
The teenager from the ticket stand yelled from the projector room that she was going to skip the ads for me. I gave a clumsy little thumbs up. Hearing the creaking of her sitting down on a metal fold out, she must have wanted to watch the movie too.
The movie was fantastic. If this was the first PG-13 thing I ever saw it had to be this. It was fun, the chemistry between Emma Roberts and Dave Franco was so electric on screen.
Tumblr media
In fact all of the actors in it were great! The use of electronics in the movie was not bad at all, probably the less egregious use of phones and internet lingo in any movie I've seen. The cinematography was beautiful, lit up my eyes on that dark little room. The sprawling residential New York at night doesn't seem like it would have many sets for beauty. They managed to make it work. The use of lighting has got to be my favorite thing. Just wow. The story had twists and turns and it was acted just perfectly by the leads. Don't even get me started on that soundtrack, I was listening to all that type of music even before the movie came out. The music was put into the movie so well, not just put in because it's a good song.
Tumblr media
The movie is definitely a time capsule though. All the actors were really in their prime during the movie or shortly after. All of the music from the movie is definitely from the 2010s grungy sickly-sweet indie sleeze era of the internet. It's a super high produced movie with well-known teen actors of the time in almost every scene. Insanely 2016.
I remember walking out of the theater like a just found the answer to the universe. I felt adult like I had wanted, yes. But the movie, even with all its fluffy teenage Tumblr glamor, had a sort of theme. I was going to live my life like you could die any second, hold what was close to me and never let go. I did that for a while without a single braincell. This was the beginning of my teens in a movie. Make mistakes, take risks, love eachother. Hook up with James Franco's factually hotter brother.

like most Christian movies risen is cheesy and biblically dubious at times and gets loads of cultural stuff wrong for the sake of being recognizable to a primarily American audience but I'll readily admit the poor roman tribune's absolute bafflement at these religious weirdos who keep talking about love and stuff has me cackling unhingedly
Like, is it sound biblical doctrine and is it historical believable? No? Is it hilarious and do I enjoy seeing this random shmuck lose his mind going through what's essentially a very disturbing psychological thriller from his pov while the disciples are overflowing with joy? You bet??
The guy is dealing with horrifyingly decomposed dead bodies trying to find the right cadaver and previously sane soldiers going crazy and dead men being spotted alive and strange supernatural phenomena and angry gods and unexplained madness and religious fanatism spreading like a contagion, and meanwhile the disciples (and Jesus) are all like HELLO BROTHER WOULD YOU LIKE TO HEAR ABOUT THE BEST NEWS EVER :D :D :D
#Help my man Clavius he didn't ask for none of this#I gotta admit this is the first time in a while I've enjoyed any part of a Christian movie#even if most of it has me rolling my eyes and going “THAT'S not how it happened”#THE DISCIPLES WOULDN'T PRONOUNCE THE NAME OF GOD AND THE HOLY SHROUD IS BOGUS (for starters)#And there was no stranger - much less a roman - when Jesus appeared to the apostles#But I AM having fun with the tonal dissonance#Poor clavius is dreaming of blood and storms and his sanity is crumbling to dust and it feels like the end of the world#while to everyone who knows what's going on it's the single greatest thing that has ever happened and ever will#Risen 2016#Resurrection#Bible movies#(Also in the list of things that get on my nerves no the spreading of the Gospel didn't hinge on one roman protecting the apostles)#(I hope they psychologically disturb that man some more he doesn't get to think he's that important)#(Centering a roman while getting some pretty basic stuff about Jewish culture wrong is also annoying)#(The beginning of the church are entirely and unambiguously JEWISH.)#(This character is like. 10 chapters too early.)#(Peter doesn't announce the Gospel to a roman until WELL after Jesus has ascended to heaven and even then it takes a direct order from God)#(And cornelius was already a follower of God and not pagan.)#(So Clavius just doesn't fit. And inserting a pagan guy as a witness to Jesus' most intimate moments with his disciples feels off)#The Gospel doesn't spill to the nations until God decrees it's time for it to happen. I don't like this romanisation#But again the first half of the movie had me laughing even though I could rant about its flaws for two hours

Why Must Snow Be Temporary?
Meena: Artica, I know it’s you putting sunblock on all this snow!
Artica: Awww! How did you find out?
Meena: Well, for one thing, you’re the only person around here who uses cookie dough scented sunblock…
Ash: I told you to use some of mine!

this self (having shed its attachments) was free for the strangest adventures
"Your dare is to kiss any stranger here." George looks around at the neon establishment as if it has personally offended him somehow. "Have you even kissed someone after Paul in the 3rd grade?"
"Course I have!"
"Yeah right." George scoffs at her defensive tone.
"It'll be fine." Lucy growls back, looking around the diner impatiently for someone not completely repulsive and easy to kiss for at least 5 seconds. "That one! He looks... less disgusting than everyone else."
She can only see half his face from where it's hidden behind a book but the boy she's pointing out does seem quite handsome. His dark hair is neat, he appears well groomed by the look of his clothes, and he isn't eating an overly greasy meal for one. He's just reading. A half empty tea cup grows cold in front of him.
"He's wearing a full suit in a 70s themed diner!" George balks at the absurdity.
Or, the Locklyle Nerve AU Meet-Cute only like one (1) person asked for and wouldn't leave me alone until I wrote it.
Eid Mubarak to all my fellow Muslim L&C fans! Hope you all have a good one and to all my non-Muslim readers hope you all have a wonderful weekend too!
Please do leave one on this fic if you enjoy it and definitely tell me what stood out to you if you can!
