I love how like, ambiguous so many Studio Ghibli 'couples' are. They're primarily male/female duos, and it's clear how much they love and care for each other, but more often than not it's never explicitly stated to be romantic. And their bonds aren't treated any less for it.
Idk it's just something I've always held close to my heart as someone who grew up not feeling romantic attraction the way most do, it made the characters feel more relatable and human to me, and while I still didnt fully understand my identity (didn't know being aro was a thing), it helped me better reconcile with it. And I feel that's incredibly important.
(And not just from an aro perspective. portrayal of m/f friendships is rare and something we desperately need more of)
Yes, they love each other deeply, but they don't need to kiss or be a couple for that love to be agknowledged and treated with importance. It's not any less than it would be if they weren't platonic. Hell, it doesn't even need to strictly be platonic or romantic. It could just be somewhere in between and that's okay.
Studio Ghibli fr out here making the most alterous duos I've ever seen.

Moment of truth...
Keep in mind: I ONLY included the films in which (according to Wikipedia), Miyazaki was the SOLE director. The only one I couldn't squeeze on here was his latest work post-retirement (How Do You Live?). Also, alas, none of the other Ghibli films count, so don't ask for Arietty, or Grave of the Fireflies, etc.
Godspeed and happy voting! ❤

You are one of the few quality Shino blogs on here and I just wanted to get this off my chest (since he’s my fav character)! Everyone seems to think Shino’s favorite animated movie would be Disney’s A Bug’s Life but I honestly see him liking Roald Dahl’s/Henry Selick’s James and the Giant Peach or Ghibli’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind much MUCH more. Do you have any HC’s for the types of media content Shino would like to watch/read in a more modern setting?
The Bug's Life jokes are classic flanderization. Happens to side characters all the time, I just try to ignore it now.
Honestly bug boy has VERY gothic sensibilities. I see him liking a lot of tech-noir media. Naruto is a bit anachronistic but for the most part the setting is based on Kishi's 80s childhood, meaning that Shino could have easily seen early tech-noir movies. I think Shibi is into classic noir films, so it sort of fits in with this theme of...wanting to be like his dad, but also his own person. If that makes sense.
Tumblr media
As for KIDS' media? Before finding his niche I think he would be drawn to underrated and strange, dark fantasy, things that other kids might find too scary like The Black Cauldron. Ironically though, not a fan of Nightmare Before Christmas. Come on, why's the guy who's full of bugs gotta be the villain? For that reason a lot of media involving insects or arachnids are off the table; he's quite easily offended when it comes to bugs.
Tumblr media
I have not seen Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind myself but on a cursory google search these bugs definitely look like something he would be interested in. I can imagine him filling a whole notebook with ideas and diagrams....
Tumblr media
Printed media...we know he likes shonen manga, and western comics are also implied. It seems like Shino preferred Marvel and Torune preferred DC?
I can't talk much on books really, I haven't been able to enjoy a book for many many years (personal reasons) so outside of YouTube reviews of known trash fires I really have no idea what's going on in the world of words on paper.
And for shows, Nat Geo and the like are a given, but I also have a longstanding headcanon that Shino really likes Gundam. We've never gotten to see his room, but I think he would have a whole glass case of custom-painted models. My only basis for this is that it was popular at the time and Shino is a big fucking nerd, detail-oriented, content to work with forceps...and robots are a lot like bugs, if you think about it (but not too hard). Maybe he watched the show with Torune when they were little.

Oops. That was longer than I intended it to be. Well, I hope that answered your question!

Spoon's Q&A, fun facts and more! (NHK Culture Center Class)
Tumblr media
As promised, I have translated the contents of Spoon's NHK class. This post includes answers to the Q&A, fun facts and interesting info I noticed from the session.
Disclaimer: Unless stated otherwise, these aren't direct quotes, nor a literal or complete translation of the whole class (it was over an hour long, it would have taken me much longer...), it's a summary. Also, Spoon talked very fast, so while I fact-checked my notes with native speakers and translators, I could have made mistakes.
Many thanks to my friends @carlachen and @ mananokobako on Twitter for sharing their notes with me!
Q&A
Q: The outfits featured on “Who Made Me A Princess” are very beautiful, what’s the process behind their designs? [Note: This was my question!]
A: When designing the outfits, Spoon researches the appropriate aristocratic costumes and dress codes, mainly from the 1870’s and 1880’s. She also uses material collections, books about clothing and web seaches, and used them as reference for details and hairstyles. In fact, this process could get very research-intensive and take many hours, something Spoon hadn’t anticipated, so she thanks the readers for liking them and taking notice of the clothes’ details.
Q: How did you come up with the name "Spoon"?
A: A friend recommended it to me, saying that the pronunciation of the word "spoon" was cute and that it suited my illustrations.
Q: While there are happy times when you draw manga, you must have also experienced many difficult and sad times. Is there anything that gave you the strength to overcome those difficult times?
A: The words of support and feedback from the readers gave Spoon strenght. When she heard that one of them was able to overcome depression after reading "Who Made Me A Princess", she was really moved to tears. Another happy event she remembers was when a foreign reader sent her a letter and a gift through the publisher company. She was so grateful that they would come all the way here [Korea], and also thanks the publisher company.
Q:  What’s the most important thing to focus on while doing art, and is it needed to receive formal education or one could be self-taught? This may be a contradictory question, but what do you do when you lose interesting in drawing or you don't want to draw? Also, what’s your favorite type of ramen? [Yes this is the correct translation lol]
A: Spoon believes that the most important thing while doing art is to complete your work. If you don't complete it first, you can’t find flaws or bad points in your art to improve. Whether you learn by self-study or by attending art school, if you can become a professional or not depends on your effort. Try to be as specific as possible in your goals, and think about what you need to do to become better at painting than you are now. When Spoon is feeling unmotivated, she thinks to myself, "If I take a break now, I will regret it later, won't I?".
Among Korean ramen, a type called of sesame ramen called "Chamke ramen" is Spoon's favorite.
Q: I was always impressed by the beauty of Spoon-sensei's paintings. I wanted to know if there is an artist that influenced your art.
Tumblr media
A: Spoon’s style has been influenced by the art of Naoko Takeuchi [Called it] author of Sailor Moon, Ikuko Ito, creator of Princess Tutu and animation director of the original Sailor Moon anime, and Katekyo Hitman Reborn’s author, Akira Amano [In fact, Spoon is a big fan of the series. You can check some of her old fanart here]. Spoon says that she respects them very much.
Q: Do you have any stories, manga, TV dramas or anime that have been greatly influential for you?
A: Studio Ghibli’s Nausicaä and Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and Disney’s Moana, stories where the female protagonist has adventures and overcomes adversity. Spoon thinks those stories of growth are really wonderful.
Q: What’s your favorite anime?
A: Spoon likes all the films directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
Q: The person asking this questions comments that, after reading "Who Made Me A Princess" they gradually became interested in family stories in which two characters who were indifferent before become close and come to cherish each other very much. Their question is, since there are many combinations and genre settings, if there's a particular pattern or setting that Spoon personally likes.
A: Spoon likes to see a character change depending on emotions such as love and friendship. Emotions are intangible, but they have the power to change a person's personality and behavior. She thinks that's what is so wonderful about it.
Q: At what stage do you draw the shadows? Do you add them in from the beginning or in the middle [of the process of painting]? Also, when do you start thinking about putting shadows in there? I would like to know if there are any points you are conscious of when drawing.
A: Spoon adds shadows when she is considering the surrounding lighting of the drawing. Even if the object in particular is a flat surface, it's important to paint it as if it were three-dimensional. In order to get better at this, it's absolutely necessary to carefully observe photographs to see the way in which shadows are cast when an object is exposed to light.
Q: When you are drawing, which part do you like the most?
A: Spoon enjoys when she is putting the finishing touches the most. She is filled with a sense of accomplishment after completing it.
Q: In some scenes, Athy does a swirly gesture with her arms when she is embarrassed. The person who asked this question doesn’t quite understand it, as it’s not something you see in Japanese manga, and would like Spoon to explain it a little.
Tumblr media
A: [Spoon shows gifs of Korean TV shows where the participants make a sort of “grabby hands” motion] Spoon laughs and explains that this is a common physical way to convey embarrassment, surprise or cringe in Korean culture [If you search “오글거리다” you can find some examples]. The word used literally means that your limbs "shrink", so that's where the gesture comes from, but it can also be used in other situations, such as being horrified, in pain or cold. In Japan, this is usually represented with goosebumps.
Tumblr media
Spoon elaborates about how certain cultural differences are fascinating. For example, when someone is talking about a character behind their back or in another place, in Japanese media the character will usually sneeze. On the other hand, in Korea that kind of situation has the character’s ears suddenly itching.
Q: The person asking the question says that the way in which Spoon draws jeweled eyes is very beautiful. They want to know how did Spoon think of that idea, or if she developed a process of creating them.
A: How she would draw the jeweled eyes was one of the things that Spoon worried about the most. What she wanted to convey was the feeling of a “cut gemstone”, and how precious, shining and beautiful the eyes look [Here she explains it while doing “cutting” motions with her hands. Think something similar to a karate chop]. She did her very best and is glad that she got a good response from readers.
Q: Athy and her friends looks so beautiful and cute in the dresses they wear. I would like to know what was the most difficult or honestly troublesome dress to draw in your work.
A: The coronation dress was very difficult and time-consuming to draw. At that time, Spoon had to do a lot of things at the same time, such as revising the physical version of the webtoon, so there wasn't enough time to do everything at the same time, but Spoon was happy that the effort she put into it made it look gorgeous.
Q: Who is your favorite character to draw, or the easiest to draw? And who is the most difficult to draw?
A: It’s Athy, because she’s gorgeous and cute. But Spoon also greatly enjoys drawing Lucas. Drawing him is fun because he is handsome and has many expressions. On the other hand, it's difficult to draw cautious characters because their facial expressions don't change much. However, she says that all of the characters are beautiful and elegant, so there’s no character that Spoon dislikes drawing.
Q: What is the most important thing for Spoon to draw in “Who Made Me A Princess”?
A: Spoon expands on the themes of “Who Made Me A Princess”, about the various relationships within the family that wasn't connected to one another. She thought that even if the characters shared blood, they hadn't been able to communicate, so they could only become a family if they thought about each other. And even if they are not connected by blood, if they care about each other they still can become a family.
Q: The person asking the question goes over how the color of both Jennette and Anastasius’ eyes changed once Lucas removed their mana. Jennette’s eyes became green like Penelope’s, while Anastasius’ turned black. It seems like the jeweled eyes are related to the characters' mana. So, if they didn’t have any magic, would Athy's eyes become a beautiful and mysterious color like Diana's, and Claude's eyes would become almost brown like his mother's?
A: Spoon elaborates about how the way in which a person’s eye color is determined is very complex and tricky, as it has to do with genetics, but in this setting it indeed relates to the royal mana. If Athy didn’t have any magic, her eyes would look like Diana’s.
[Note: This is also shown with Aeternitas’ cloudy jeweled eyes, since his mana was very weak].
Q: The person asking this question asks Spoon why was Diana a dancer, and if she could get a little more into Diana’s character, her past and what type of person she was.
A: Spoon imagined Diana as a minstrel or a wandering artist. Like a ballerina in a famous theater troupe who tours, she travels with her dancing and singing, putting on shows in different countries to earn money for her travels, so Spoon characterized her as a free soul.
Q: Obelia is called “the land of eternal springs and summers” in the last chapter. Does that mean winter doesn’t exist there?
A: Spoon says that indeed, there’s no cold weather in Obelia. That's why the characters don't have winter clothes. However, as there are a lot of cute designs for winter clothes, she would like to draw an illustration of the characters in winter clothes in the future.
Q: What your schedule is like when you are working on the series?
A: Spoon exercises as soon as she wakes up, for about 2 hours, eats dinner when she gets home, and starts working right away all the way until she goes to bed.
Q: It’s very rare to see Claude in uniform or tight clothes. The person asking the question wonders why Claude's clothes are so bare and asks Spoon if she could elaborate a little on his fashion sense.
A: Claude used to be a prince who wore his uniform properly, but after meeting Diana, he came to like the more casual or loose style of clothing. So Claude's fashion sense comes from Diana’s influence on him. Even when he didn’t remember her, he kept wearing such clothes because of that influence, and also because he genuinely likes them.
Q: Who’s Spoon’s favorite guy?
A: [With no hesitation] Claude.
Q: How did you improve your drawing skills before becoming an illustrator?
A: Spoon used to emulate her favorite artists and draw fanart.
Q: Do you have a favorite japanese word?
A: When she was traveling in Japan, Spoon was impressed by the name “Nippori” [Referring to Nippori train station]. She looked up the meaning and thought “Oh, so that’s what it means!” [Note: Nippori means “place where the sun sets”]. In Nippori, she didn’t do anything in particular, Spoon just passed by it on the train.
Q: "Who Made Me A Princess" has great clothes, but I also like the flowers that appear in each scene. I know some of them problably don't exist, but is there a flower that you use as a model?
A: It was a long time ago, so Spoon doesn't remember much, but she tried to draw beautiful flowers with overlapping petals.
Q: Is there anything that Spoon-sensei takes special care of in terms of physical condition?
A: Her wrists. Spoon demonstrates how she does her stretching routine. She also takes supplements when needed.
Q: I love Athy's hair color, it's so soft. Did you have any difficulties or problems deciding on that color?
A: At first her hair was a little darker, but Claude's hair is a dark blond and Athy's is a light blonde. So, in order to make a difference between them, Spoon lightened Athy's hair. She had a hard time fixing it so it wouldn't be too bright.
Q: What do you keep in mind about color schemes when you paint? They are always beautiful and I'm always fascinated by them.
A: Spoon tries not to make the color scheme too dark or complex [This answer was hard to hear, it could mean too dark or complicated/oversaturated].
Q: A question asking for commentary on the characters' expression and they way in which Spoon draws them. The answer focuses on Claude’s expression when Athy collapses in Chapter 18. The comments mention how Claude’s perspective of it in Chapter 102 was very moving and made everyone cry. [Here Spoon showed the panel of Claude’s surprised face].
Tumblr media
A: That scene was especially difficult for Spoon. It's a precious scene that shows how Claude had allowed his heart to worry about Athy. It was quite difficult because she had to give the expression a “Claude-like” quality and be careful to not deviate from his personality, but she also had to express how shocked he was. But it was a lot of fun despite the difficulties.
After reading the comments saying that this scene made everyone cry, Spoon adds that this is her favorite scene in the webtoon.
Q: The last question of the class. What will Spoon do in the future?
A: Spoon was thinking of going back to being an illustrator after the serialization of “Who Made Me A Princess” was over, but after the encouragement and happiness she received from readers, she decided to continue as a cartoonist. Look forward to seeing her next work!
Spoon realized that it makes her very happy to see and meet readers who are happy to read the manga she drew. She will continue to create good works as much as she can. She ends the live part of the class thanking us readers.
Q: At what age did you start drawing? [Note: The following questions are direct quotes. Because they were provided in written form, I was able to faithfully translate them].
A: My parents told me that I was very young, ever since I was able to hold a pencil, I was already drawing.
Q: What made you decide to be a cartoonist?
A: I have always dreamed of becoming a cartoonist since I was a child, but I thought it might be difficult, so at first I aimed to become an illustrator. After a while of working as an illustrator, I was asked to make my favorite work into a webtoon and decided to become a cartoonist.
Q: What’s your favorite manga?
A: I really enjoy reading Dungeon Meshi [Delicious in Dungeon] these days.
Q: What’s your favorite Japanese food?
A: I like sushi and ramen / I like cheese and creamy foods. It’s not good for my health… But it’s delicious, isn’t it? ( ;ω;   )
Q: When did your current art style take form?
A: After I started working as an illustrator and studied styles suitable for the genre (mainly romance fantasy), I guess… It’s not completely set in stone, it’s still developing.
Q: I’d like to know what’s your average working time per day.
A: Basically 8 hours, sometimes more than 12 hours when the deadline approaches.
Q: What software do you use for illustration?
A: I use Clip Studio Paint by CELSYS.
Q: Please tell me how to draw jeweled eyes!
A: I posted a tutorial on YouTube. Please watch the SoSpoon channel! [Link to the tutorial]
Q: Please tell us about Athanasia’s daily life!
A: Athy enjoys having tea and cake while performing her duties as princess. She will also play with Lucas, who shows up from time to time.
Q: Did you expect “Who Made Me A Princess” to become so popular in Japan? Did you work with the intention of expanding to overseas from the beginning?
A: At first, I didn’t think about publishing overseas. At that time [when the serialization began, in 2017], it wasn’t a time when overseas expansion was very active [referring to how back then, it wasn’t common for manhwas to get translated into other languages]. I was very happy that Japanese readers enjoyed my work, and I’m looking around for feedback with a lot of gratitude. Thank you so much for all the love.
Q: What does “Who Made Me A Princess” mean for Spoon-sensei?
A: The webtoon “Who Made Me A Princess” is like a benefactor to me. Thanks to this work, I was able to receive a lot of love. Thank you so much.
Q: Have you been asked to make an anime adaptation of “Who Made Me A Princess”?
A: Yes. I heard that it was ranked the 2nd manga that people want to see animated in Japan. Thank you very much.
[This year, “Who Made Me A Princess” has also been nominated to receive an anime adaptation. Read more about it and vote here!]
Fun Facts and Other Info
I'll answer what everyone is probably wondering about first: No, there was no mention of the side stories. But also, no one really asked about it. It seems to be a sort of taboo topic among japanese readers, and since there is some kind of issue with their publication, nobody touched the subject to not ruin the happy mood.
Apparently, Spoon received over 1000 questions for the Q&A.
The NHK translator mentioned that there were students from many countries!
Spoon gave a quick overview of her working tools. They include: a Cintiq 27QHD (tablet), two Dell monitors, and a Streamdeck. She also mentions using a 24-inch pen now, because it's easier to use.
Spoon has volume 9's cover as her PC's wallpaper.
Tumblr media
Spoon's voice is very cute! But wow, she talks so fast. Taking notes was very challenging.
She seemed to be shy but was very happy and looked healthy! The first thing she did was thank the readers for all their support and for giving her strength.
There were many comments about how cute the gestures Spoon made were. I agree!
Spoon has a ton of WMMAP merch. A whole bookshelf filled with it, and I believe she had at least one item of... everything. Even the chinese exclusive merch.
She also had a bunch of WMMAP volumes, both normal and limited versions!
Spoon has a special brush for drawing blushed cheeks, and it's in fact not pink but orange and light red, with the contours being lighter.
She had a very cute crab pencil holder. She said it was a gift from her assistant. Spoon likes it because it has a cute shape and she loves cute things. Like this (green one):
Tumblr media
Most people already saw, but the results of the popularity poll for the character people wanted Spoon to draw were: Athy in 1st place, Lucas 2nd, Claude 3rd, Ijekiel 4th, and lastly Jennette 5th. The numbers of votes weren't revealed. Spoon drew the following illustration to celebrate:
Tumblr media
That's it for now! I've been told that the class will be re-streamed soon (though I don't know if it will be made public or just for those who paid), so I'll try to watch it again and chat with friends that attended the class to see if I can add more interesting information to this post.
(February 4th, 2023 Edit) With the invaluable help of my friend @ mananokobako on Twitter and listening to the class again, I was able to translate new questions and improve on the past translation. I hope everyone can give it another read!

I wanted to do a cheesy inspiration chart for Wucy... Tbh, I don't really create characters by going, "I want them to have x, y, and z trait!" They usually just sort of pop in my head and I refine them from there without much second thought about it. But Lucy has a few details that I'm like, "...Yeah, that's probably where that comes from!!"
Rambles for each under the cut
Nausicaä - The Ghibli movie version, I've never read the original manga. Prefers pursuing peaceful resolutions to conflicts but is a hairline away from snapping and going ham on the people threatening her loved ones. Her motivation is simple and altruistic - she just wants to protect her name and the natural world. They're the daughters of leaders in their communities but don't hold themselves "above" others. They're involved in their communities, know everyone personally, and work alongside their neighbors.
Katara - ATLA is one of my favorite series to this day, so this is unsurprising to me LMAO Strong-willed, brave, wants to fight and take action to help people instead of filling a more peaceful role. Her emotional depth is a strength and helps her connect to people that might otherwise be over-looked or unreachable. If you wrong her, you have to take actions to redeem yourself, she's not gonna do it for you. Will fight a war that she's too young to be in. Likes a little girly time :) “I will never, ever turn my back on people who need me.”
Catharine - From the webcomic, Sister Claire. Maternal, compassionate, but her love makes her a fighter to be reckoned with. She's willing to [literally] take on the pain of others, even at a detriment to herself. Never stops pursuing the possibility of a better life and a safer world. She may make mistakes, but they are done out of love; a normal person traversing abnormal circumstances the best she can. I really loved her hairstyle of long hair braided to be tied back. Commenters also love her "boopable" nose, so I think of that every time I draw Lucy's nose too 🥺
Ashitaka - Ya, another Ghibli film character [sage nod] Comes from a small town where peace is shattered by outside forces that encroach on the innocent. While Ashitaka is affected directly by being cursed, Lucy is affected by her best friend's murder. They are both motivated to leave their homes in favor of seeking a "cure," of finding the source of their trauma and correcting it. Neither of them directly want revenge, though, they both simply want to make sense of things and find the best solution. Despite the (justifiable!) rage and hatred boiling in them both, neither character enjoy nor want to act on it. They see how badly scarred the world is and how old pains are fueling only more pain; they want it all to just stop so everyone can move forward to a place of peace.
Bonus: She's also directly (and knowingly) inspired by a story Matt Colville told about one of the games he ran years ago :D The reality of living in a world of adventurers and monsters is pretty terrible!!! Lucy's one of those laymen that grew up in that reality and was affected by it... and wanted to do something about it once she was old enough!!

I didn't think that the Ghibli poll would blow up in one night and I was so excited to see all the voters! I noticed some sadness when it came to the ones I didn't put in so I decided to make a part two and I can make a face off between the best to choose a winner after this! Enjoy!
There is one you may not have heard such as the red turtle. I promise i went doen the list of ghibli films and only looked for actual movies/films. It's from 2016 and i hadn't even heard about it but to those who did and enjoyed it here it is. Alright have fun! Fight fight fight!

i’m bored so here’s which studio ghibli film i think would be each member of the nein’s favorite
ponyo - jester
she definitely grew up watching that movie over and over. she wondered if her dad might be like ponyo’s dad, somewhere off in the sea. whenever she rewatches it she HAS to have the ramen that they ate in the movie.
grave of the fireflies - yasha
she will not let you watch this with her because it makes her sob (dude me too). the whole war and these children trying to survive would definitely resonate with her in some way.
when marnie was there - beau
just like the rest of us, she thought they were going to be lesbians and then was horrified when she found out the truth. now she loves making people watch it with her without telling them anything just to see their reactions. she goes on a long rant afterwards. i think she relates a bit to anna.
whisper of the heart - caleb
it’s simple, it makes him happy. shizuku is a character that he really resonates with, mostly because she reminds him of what he was like when he was younger. seeing her get a happy ending makes him happy, but after it’s all over his usual self-hatred thoughts come tumbling back to him. he hums “take me home, country roads” to himself when he’s working hard on something. ALSO he fucking adored that cat *insert caleb voice* “although it vas not as good of a cat as frumpkin.”
howl’s moving castle - nott/veth
i mean come on. woman gets transformed into something she finds hideous and accepts the idea that she’s unlovable, only to find that people love her regardless and she breaks her own curse through gaining confidence. nott would fucking adore this movie. also she gets super jittery whenever she sees howl’s room bc LOOK AT ALL THAT STUFF! also she won’t stop commenting on how hot howl is.
castle in the sky - fjord
i can’t really explain it well, but it just makes so much sense. like jester, i think he grew up with it. maybe he watched it first at the orphanage and was mesmerized by it. also pirates.
nausicaä of the valley of the wind - caduceus
jester introduced him to this movie. when she heard he had never watched a movie before she first made him watch ponyo because she was super excited to show him and then nausicaä because she realized how much he would like it. he loves all the giant bugs and how nature is depicted. he’s very quiet when he watches it and just sits there like :) and gives the occasional quiet “that’s nice.”
spirited away - mollymauk
the vibes are so him. he adores the art and every five minutes says “this is my favorite part!” if you haven’t seen it he will make you watch it with him, he makes a fruit platter for snacks of course. i don’t think he really has a deeper connection to it beyond just loving the vibes which is so valid.
if anyone has any other ideas i would love to hear them!! idk if i did that good of a job on this lol

Hi ari 🤍 brought you a question. Again 😋 Which ghibli movies or characters best suit different jjk characters? Mention non ghibli anime too if u want :D include the heartbreaking film - grave of the fireflies if you have seen it. Gotta sleep bye!! Have a nice day 😁
hi toruuuu :333 thank you for the question!!! I LOVE STUDIO GHIBLI SOOOOO MUCH i actually haven’t watched grave of the fireflies tho 😭😭 i’m most familiar w the miyazaki movies but i’ll include some others for this question too !! most of these are entirely vibe-based LMAO
satoru - howl’s moving castle
do i even need to say it ???? gojo is howl. howl is gojo. they’re soooo similar and this movie in general just reminds me of him sm :(((( i think he’d love it a lot!!! the star motifs, the war, the breakfast and kindness in sophie’s found family…… howl who is so strong and out of reach. who views himself as a monster. but he finds love in so many ways and he gives love to so many people….. sob. he makes me so emotional. he’s also a pathetic loser which is very gojocoded <3333
suguru - spirited away
I HAD TO PICK IT . I HAD TO. throwback to my childhood friend!sugu and his queer awakening being haku LMAO……. i just think this movie is so unbelievably sugucoded with all the yōkai and ominous vibes…. but then also those little bits and pieces of family as a theme :3 obv he reminds me a lot of haku. with the dragon form and everything… the devotion….. think sugu would love this movie a ton and i think nanamimi would adore it. they force him to watch it all the time hehe
shoko - castle in the sky
CHOOSING ONE FOR SHOKO WAS TOUGHHH but eventually i landed here ….. this one is entirely vibe-based but. just. the plot…. the pirates and planes and high-speed chase scenes and the castle in the sky with all its advanced technology….. especially the castle. the robots!!!! the retrofuturistic style in general is soooo shoko…. and obviously the war themes but that’s kind of a given for any of miyazaki’s works. honestly i think porco rosso is very very shokocoded too but i had to give that to another one of my blorbos….. this movie just makes me feel so nostalgic and i think the themes fit shoko a ton :3
honourable mention to the ghibli lupin movie that i Have Not Seen but i just KNOW shoko would love it. trust. anything detective/phantom thief based makes me think of her
kenny - the boy and the heron / nausicaä of the valley of the wind
I COULDN’T DECIDE 💔 nausicaä was another big contender for shoko’s movie but i just think it’s too weird and freaky to give to anyone but kenny. that movie TRAUMATIZED me as a child. and i think kenny would love it. also just???? the creepy bugs????? nature vs humanity?????? those themes feel so kenny. he’d like the protag a lot i think!!
as for the boy and the heron…. it’s just Vibes. the heron reminds me of kenny!! and i think he’d love the movie a lot…. the depictions of war and the fantasy world, the blend between comedy and violence….. i just feel like there’s such a strong contrast between the bleak realism and the colourful fantasy elements. and that makes me think of kenny!!! i want to watch this movie w him so BAD bro i know his commentary would be the best 😔😔
toji - porco rosso
IT FITS HIM SO WELL. I FEEL INSANE. porco rosso is one of my Absolute Favorite ghibli movies andddd i think toji would love it / it’s just so Him!!!! porco rosso is genuinely him. a literal pig who smokes cigars and flies jet planes….. this movie is so special to me and it’s just giving toji vibes :3 the cigarettes and planes and beautiful gorgeous women…. the macho men. etcetc. but also the grief and the tender scenes….. i’ll never forget that One scene with all the planes of the people who died ascending up into the sky :(((( yeah. this movie is so good and so underrated and i think toji would love it sooooo damn bad
nobara - whisper of the heart / the cat returns
had to give my best girl the best movie <333 being whisper of the heart. but since the cat returns is connected to it and also very nobaracoded i thought i’d go with both!!!! the cat returns is just so funnnn and since nobara is a cat person i think it’s perfect for her!! i can imagine her watching it as a kid and having a crush on both the protag AND the baron lmao. she watches it for comfort now n then <33
and whisper of the heart…. my favorite ghibli movie Of All Time <333 it’s sooo nostalgic and coming-of-age as a genre is very Her. there are so many fun lovely scenes that i think noba would like :((( idk if she’d actually like romance movies bUT. shizuku’s journey with writing and growing up and finding more control in her life feels very nobara. she’s true to herself!!!! i think nobara would hateeee seiji tho rip to him 💀💀 these movies just bring me soooo much comfort and nobara does too <333
megumi - ponyo
THIS ONE IS JUST SO. yeah. the nature themes?? the sea???? the fishes?????? everything is so megumi i could see him loving this movie soso much :(((( he’s embarrassed to admit it but it’s his comfort movie. he loves the scene w the ramen…. idk the vibes here are just very gumi. again!!! the sea!!!! the sea rising to the surface!!!!!! all the underwater scenes are so vibrant and pretty….. ALSO THE ABSENT FATHERISM? yeah. megumi is ponyocoded. he loves it so much <33 watches it with yuji and nobara and feels so cozy. baby boy.
mai - kiki’s delivery service
you know i had to give this one to her <333 momo and miwa and her watch it for sure. ANOTHER one of my Absolute Favs btw and it’s just!! yeah. it’s mai. what can i say. the witches and cats and also just the whole theme of being thrust into a completely new environment??? having to adjust???? and the difficulty kiki has with that…. her eventual burnout :(((( it just reminds me a bit of mai’s life. i think she’d love to run away to a completely different country… find a place where she feels wanted and loved. sniffle. i love this girl w all my heart :(((( i like to think that her and maki watched this one as kids…. maki likes the more action-leaning ghibli movies more but she would watch it to make mai happy. i love them.
takaba - pompoko
aaaand finally!!!! a silly movie for a silly meowmeow :3 NO BUT ACTUALLY THOUGHH CAN WE PLS TALK ABOUT THIS MOVIE . I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO LOVES IT RIGHT…. it’s just so funny and sooooo weird but also soso heartfelt and that’s takaba down to a tee!!! the japanese mythology elements made me think of kenny too….. this movie is both kenny and takaba coded i think. they’d both love it. BUT YEAH I JUST THINK THIS MOVIE IS VERY HIM…. the tanukis and their lil adventures :3 but also the spooky scenes. and the struggles they face!! when humans destroy their homes!!!! takaba would watch this movie and he would cry. sweet sweet puppy of a man.

Studio Ghibli Reviews: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
I know I know this film was technically made before the founding of Studio Ghibli, but it's now currently sold under that umbrella so it also technically counts as a Ghibli film, so there.
Nausicaä started life as a serialized manga for the magazine Animage by Hayao Miyazaki himself and his involvement in the animated adaptation was only on the table if he could direct. Having just come off his first directing role on Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (a very fine action film I can't recommend enough), Nausicaä would prove particularly challenging for Miyazaki as he had barely moved his manga along story-wise. But, even so, the film was completed and went on to become an enormous Ohm-sized success, especially as the funds received helped found Miyazaki's own animation studio, Studio Ghibli.
Plot: Set in a post-apocalyptic future after a fabled "Seven Days of Fire" in which humans bioengineered giant-warriors who spewed nuclear weapons, the namesake Nausicaä is the princess of the peaceful and secluded Valley of the Wind. This is one of the last strongholds of human society, as the rest of the world is being consumed by a "toxic jungle" of poisonous sporophyte-plants and ferocious arthropods. The remaining nations frequently fight amongst each other, and one of these, Tolmekia, accidently crashes their ship into the Valley and reveals their acquisition of one of the long-dormant giant-warriors. Nausicaä must navigate the increasingly-bitter struggle between the Tolmekians (who desire to use the warrior to destroy the jungle and bring humanity back from the brink), the Pejites (another kingdom caught in the conflict with similar goals), her own kingdom (who just wishes to live in peace), and her pacifist, naturalist persona.
- this review will be mainly spoiler-free -
Tumblr media
Right away, I will admit to being slightly biased in this review as this is my favorite of the Ghibli films (hence why I chose to discuss it first). It was also very influential as - while I had been aware of and seen several Studio Ghibli films - this was the one that really kickstarted my (almost excessive) interest in their output and history, having been entranced by their storytelling formulas, animation, themes, and complex characters. Nausicaä also hit a lot of chords with me, being a film with strong environmental themes that include a crucial lesson on the need for recognition of humans as a part of nature that must coexist with other organisms if they are to survive.
At its core, Nausicaä is a film about pacifism, and how ultimately fruitless violence is. It is the creation and use of enormous biological-weapons which destroys global human society and the environment; it is the conquering-practices of the Tolmekians which leads to the deaths of many of their people as well as their enemies; and so on. Nausicaä herself abhors violence, choosing instead to use nonviolent methods to achieve peaceful ends. However, even she is not immune, and in one scene (following an emotional reaction to the death of a family member) she proceeds to wipe out several soldiers, realizing "I didn't know my rage could drive me to kill." This action almost causes great troubles for the kingdom. I have my own complex thoughts on the meaning and effectiveness of nonviolent vs. violent methods in certain situations, but in the spirit of the themes which Miyazaki explores in his films and in the context of the plot, I feel that Nausicaä does a fair job at showing how unnecessary thoughtless violence can be.
Either way, the film presents a good textbook-example of how out-of-control wartime struggles are. The kingdoms of Tolmekia and Pejite are never shown, but based on the actions and comments of their citizens, these are communities starved for times of plenty and always at the mercy of a toxic jungle they wish would vanish. Contrast this with the Valley of the Wind, whose position by the windy sea prevents the spores of the jungle from spreading (hence their name), allowing the people to grow crops and survive with relative security even with the jungle on its doorstep. Throw these nations together and conflict could not be far behind, presenting an increasing dreadfulness that ends the film in a spectacular climax.
Tumblr media
The cast of the film - like the majority of Studio Ghibli films - is full of wonderful characters. Nausicaä is a remarkable and charming hero; her passion for nature and for her people is admirable, and every time she flies on her glider (called a mehve in production material) I can't help but want to soar with her. Curiously, she seems to be the only lead-role in the film, with the rest of the cast coming in-and-out of the film at various times, only when they're needed. As much as I love these characters, the more I think about it, the more I realize that most lack the complexity of later Ghibli casts. Our antagonists, Princess Kushana of Tolmekia and her second-in-command Kurotowa, are more traditional villains for a Ghibli film, serving as conquerors leading a ruthless army and seeking their goals no matter what. Nausicaä's allies include Prince Asbel, a scrapping fly-boy whose main role is escorting her to Pejite and revealing his people's horrid plans for the Valley, and Uncle Mito, who helps Nausicaä return to the Valley following her journey. Lord Yupa is probably the highlight of the film, being a master swordsman who only uses his skills when necessary. But, for all intents-and-purposes, this is Nausicaä's story.
Commenting on the English dub for a moment (as this is how I know the film), I really love the voicework and casting choices. I adore Alison Lohman as Nausicaä, who brings a vibrant, youthful air to the character. Uma Thurman as Kushana, an actor who I know mainly from the PBS nature documentaries she narrates, plays a good villain with an air of prideful authority (almost a parallel to Nausicaä). Patrick Stewart is Yupa and, as always, kills the performance. Actual Cannibal Shia LaBeouf is Asbel, and I enjoy his role mainly due to my nostalgia (he would have finished filming Holes not long before the English dub was recorded). Chris Sarandon (Kurotowa) & Edward James Olmos (Mito), I also enjoy for their distinct voices that are absolutely perfect for their characters.
I could say much about the worldbuilding. The toxic jungle has the air of a haunted Carboniferous forest and though we only get to explore it twice in the film, it's enough to sell me on its mystery and danger. The arthropods (called insects in the film) are particularly fascinating, with the giant Ohm (a cross between a pill-bug, a grub, and a spider) taking center stage. They are implied to have highly complex cognition and I find they behave like African elephants, herding and caring for their young while communicating messages through non-verbal means. The other arthropod designs are mainly good, although some play a bit fast and loose with the anatomy for my tastes (for example, some have reptilian jaws). The rest of the planet, scarred by the Seven Days of Fire, is desolate and bleak, enough to make even the toxic jungle seem like a refuge. Of course, its important role in the story becomes apparent halfway through. The human settlements are curious as well, bearing a mix of modern and medieval elements that make for a neat combination.
Although it is not addressed in the film, according to the manga, the other animals in the film (including Teto, a "fox squirrel" companion to Nausicaä whose more like a small carnivoran, and Yupa's giant Gastornis-like riding-birds) are supposed to be genetically-engineered as well, but personally I prefer to see them as natural elements in the world of Nausicaä.
Tumblr media
For a film that is over 2 hours long, I feel Nausicaä has very good set-up and pacing. The intro effortlessly establishes the situation of the world, including a beautiful sequence of medieval-mosaics where the backstory is laid out without words. Several scenes flesh out the characters and stakes without much explanation, which is excellent considering the English dubs often require characters practically telling the audience what's happening on screen. Even though there are some scenes that can drag on a bit, in terms of their contrast with the action scenes, they are a welcome reprieve. They are made all the better by the score, which is a delightfully weird mix of 80s synth and more typical orchestration. Joe Hisaishi is the legendary conductor for the Ghibli films and his main theme for Nausicaä is necessarily enchanting and grand for a film of this type. I always get goose-bumps listening to it.
Overall, everything in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is big. The scope of the world, the conflict, and the overarching themes. Every time I watch this film I get sucked into the story, which is a running theme with all the Ghibli films I've watched. But in terms of favorites, Nausicaä remains #1 in my book. It's a great film with an inspiring main-lead that paved the way for Studio Ghibli and many other projects by others around the world. You can't pass it up.
Speaking of books, for the record, I have read the original manga. It's excellent, a tour-de-force of literary storytelling... but, it does significantly detract from the story of the film to the point where they are two-different versions. Don't get me wrong, it does expand the world-building and add more characters, but I didn't care for some of the decisions made and the fates of some of the characters left me feeling down, so I do much prefer the film. But that's just me.
Tumblr media
I hope y'all enjoyed this slighly-rambling review. I thought I'd try something new for a change and help bring my attention back to this tumblr blog. Expect more of these, for as long as my Studio Ghibli hyper-fixation keeps up XD
