It could be another person working from the same textbook as a source. If there's me and the other guy, who says there aren't more of us. They just aren't in this particular dungeon in this particular cell. Or a regular room is possible too if they're the luckiest ever.

US politics: an analysis by this bozo right here.
Hello I'm Felix Warren and I've been reading Politico every day since early 2016 as the equivalent of how other people watch their "soaps." One of my chief goals in this weirdly obsessive reading habit was to see if I could understand what was going on enough to analyze it, and if not, how long it would take me to get to where I could do so. The test would be if I could predict where general trends in politics and related news would go. It's been like that for the past few years, actually--I've been able to anticipate a few things before they were reported over the past couple years in fact. So, this is my take on where things are going now that it's almost November 2023.
The big thing is, people worry a lot about where the Republican party is going. Republicans do as much as Democrats do. And this is because the Republican party has been having some internal problems for awhile, which became very visible once the Tea Party became a big thing. And I think what's going to happen eventually with the Republican party is either a split or a purge, where it becomes several parties that more accurately reflect their own members' beliefs. The Democratic party could also use a split but it's still able to come to compromises and agreements for the good of a strong majority, so I don't know if it's in danger of cracking in half in the same way.
In the short term, though, things are probably gonna coalesce around Trump until he has a downfall. The man can't live forever and he can't stay out of jail forever either. I know a lot of people get scared of his followers having some sort of uprising but I think his downfall is going to be a lot more boring than all that. His real flaw is that he's got a horrible paper trail and he's not able to instill loyalty in his many, many co-conspirators. When three lawyers flip on a person within as many days, it's a sign that that person isn't as powerful as they wish they were.
The biggest thing that's affecting global politics is that the status quo that was sort of invented after World War II is the only thing that we have keeping international "norms," and it's been wearing down significantly in the last decade. One big part of the equilibrium has been that several world powers, including the US, make a huge chunk of their GDP off of weapons sales for "defense" to their allied nations. A lot of people look for excuses to fly drones or fire rockets because then there's more to order for restock. I don't know how this winds down. It's not sustainable in terms of technology and in terms of resources, let alone lives. Nuclear technology is wrapped up in this, with a new fleet of submarines on order, and a new fleet of IBMs being requested--things we have no long-term plan for when it comes to storage of the waste and decommissioned items.
I feel that if we can ride out the next five years there's a chance that some technologies could come about that could dramatically change the status quo for the better. I don't think it'll be AI. AI is largely a buzzword and often a hoax--the ultimate mechanical turk.

Oppenheimer [2023] – A Noncontextual Analysis
Dreams and Desire of an Artist, The Nation, Loyalty, Politics, and the Intensifying Philosophy
Tumblr media
The overwhelming or shall I say, overpowering hype across social media and the circle of friends, a bunch of cinephiles coercing each other to go for the film irrespective of the rave reviews that it has been receiving on the wide and wild Internet, and my inner conflict and skepticism for the (recent) films a’ la Dunkirk (2017) and Tenet (2020) by Christopher Nolan, who once was my favorite filmmaker – everything made up for my eternal denial to watch this merely out of peer pressure, if not for the visceral moment when one of my close friends asked me to book the tickets, with an impulse of a rather great effect, and needless to say, the way I fell in love with the film and the cinema form of art, proved the impulse all the more worthwhile and gratifying.
Having conversed with a couple of old friends about the film, I, for one, knew that it is not going to be a theatrical spectacle comparable to the likes of those created by the director himself in the past. Moreover, I also knew that the film has more words than visuals – none of these bothered me. The only thing that was a matter of worry was the director’s style of storytelling with which I have been in a dynamic love-hate relationship. While I love his Following (1998), most of his films with nonlinear storytelling have failed to impress me, not just because of the effort it demands to comprehend the complex timeline but also because the effort never led to fruition in my case, especially when I tried too hard to make a sense of the equilibrium the filmmaker achieves by playing between the time and space.
The name of the game doesn’t change much in the case of Oppenheimer, but what makes it impressive is that the storyteller (and not just an ambitious celebrity filmmaker) manages to evoke emotions with admirable aplomb and conviction. While the contextual analysis of the film might warrant me to dig into the facts and the impact the horrid event in the history had on almost two hundred thousand people of Japan, I would rather like avoid the self-evidential narrative of the film and delve into the ways the filmmaker has fashioned the central character, depicting a diverse range of motives and narrative threads, not to make him a hero but a grey protagonist whose internal trials and battles supersede the external trial he faced to prove his loyalty for his nation, if there was anything of that sort intended by him in the real life.
Dreams and Desire of an Artist
Despite the flaws in his personality and pursuits, Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer was a technical artist, which is to say that he was a scientist with the eternal thirst, anxiety, doubts, and restlessness of an artist, and that is well-portrayed in the initial scenes of the film in which we see the protagonist as a troubled, homesick human being incessantly crippled by his own dreams, and the moment of the dream overriding his sleep is represented by a series of confounding visuals wherein he envisions his it as nothing short of a nightmare for a mind of an ordinary kind. The scene gives its audience a peek into the catastrophic mind of their perpetually perturbed hero. And this envisioning of the dream set the conviction in the life physicist, who wants to see his vision come afore as a reality. Having a vision as an artist and having it on the canvas or reality are two different things, but when the artist pursues the former to achieve the latter, he can become the bazooka of the bandits, the guns of the goons, the maverick of the mafia, and a perennial incendiary for the world, the carrier of the fire within, which he hauls with the armor of an undying fidelity towards his ultimate goal, which becomes his identity.
The narrative, which is more often than not sidelined by the other aspects the filmmaker wanted to explore, becomes the most indispensable part of the film, a foreground for the future events, a foundation for the plot points, and the device that brings in other narrative threads into the picture.
In the due course, despite all other aspects of the narrative taking precedence over the dreams of the artist and the uncontrollable aspiration of the character, this part puts him in steadfast for what he would “achieve” – irrespective of its moral merit or lack thereof – in the future.
The Nation, Loyalty, Politics
Americans, traditionally, love to fight. All real Americans love the sting of battle.
- General George S. Patton, Patton (1970)
While the above quote does not apply to Dr. Oppenheimer, because the violence wasn’t the objective of the man who made the atom bomb a reality – a claim that he makes in the film, or rather tries too hard to, which only gets defeated by his conviction discussed in the final part of this article, the quote has a contextual significance when the well-known war-driven American patriotism and the communist philosophies collide to put forth the protagonist in the question about the loyalty towards his country. While this narrative makes up for the most part of the film, Christopher Nolan uses it as a mere plot device to express the opinions on the character through a demanding yet gratifying exchange of the dialogues. In the American custom, the aversion from war and battle in general, is looked down upon from a political perspective, and it’s evident in a scene wherein Oppenheimer meets the States’ President, who calls him crybaby.
Moreover, early on in the film, the character is interrogated about his thoughts about the States to which his response is warm and favorable towards the officials and the country. However, Oppenheimer’s thoughts on the country that he calls his, the warmth he feels in America, his close association with the nation’s Army and the contribution in bringing the World War to a closure, all in the garb bringing peace and neutrality for the posterity, doesn’t resolve to his heroism and loyalty, especially because Christopher Nolan uses this on-the-face narrative segment, which occupies the most part of the script, as a deceptive device to hide what’s substantial – the aspirations of this technical artist and the philosophy that stirred him to usher his visions towards making him an instrument of massive destruction.
Philosophy of Violence
In mainstream Hollywood, violence is often associated with either a crime of passion a’ la Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope (1948), Strangers on a Train (1951), Dial M for Murder (1954), and Frenzy (1972) to name a few, or a planned act of violence rooted in a lingering emotion like vengeance, as in Unforgiven (1992). Most of the times, the violence is a meager device of entertainment, as you would quintessentially witness in Tarantino and Scorsese films. It would be safe to say that tangible forms of violence have been a part of cinema, and they add cinematic value to the story.
However, in Oppenheimer, you don’t get to see the tangible form of violence. Even if there is violence depicted by the vivid visuals of a detonated bomb, you get to see the vague images and not hear a sound – a sequence brilliantly staged by Christopher Nolan to once again hide what happens in the world outside the mind of the protagonist and rather emphasis the way he sees the world after having committed an act that brought mass destruction and tragedy in Japan. The exploration of human consciousness through violence and the disguise of the political scenario in the country are the conflicting threads that cross their path as mere strangers, oblivious of each other’s existence.
In what could have been a vital sequence in the film – inappropriately mingled with sexual intercourse and is now receiving its share of flak from the audience and censor board – we get to learn the philosophy of Oppenheimer and the roots that have stoked an insatiable fire in his curious mind. The quote from Bhagwad Geeta, “I am become Death, the destroyer of (both the) worlds,” founds a philosophical ground for the film, which justifies – but not in moral terms – the core conviction of the protagonist and how he uses the philosophy to see his dream come true. The moment when an artist combines a deep philosophy with what he wants to achieve, the internal conflicts and disparagement from the external worlds are exterminated from the mind, and become a botheration only after he establishes his motives.
While Christopher Nolan shows the protagonist’s outer struggle with the world that questions his loyalty to the country, his inner fight has his soul laid bare in front of the audience, and this is done not to gain sympathy for the protagonist or make him emerge as a hero. However, the filmmaker achieves this with a conviction to confound his audience and provoke thoughts only as conflicting as those in the mind of the hero, if only we can call him by that title. This beguiling act of perplexing the audience, not with the nonlinear storytelling the director is famous for – which is done right in bits and pieces to juxtapose the present, past, and the future in a historical context – but by imbibing a moral conundrum of no ordinary kind, happens to be the filmmaker’s artistic triumph.
To conclude, Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer will be remembered for the vision and wounds he gave to the world, but Oppenheimer (2023) will be remembered for the consternation, conflict, and most importantly, the emotions it manages to stir, irrespective of where you see it from, for it’s neither a theatrical essential nor an OTT dispensable.
It is what it is – a moving piece of cinema, a story told with guts and gusto in equal measures.

A radically new view on dwarf galaxies surrounding the Milky Way
Commonly thought to be long-lived satellites of our galaxy, a new study now finds indications that most dwarf galaxies might, in fact, be destroyed soon after their entry into the Galactic halo.
Thanks to the latest catalog from ESA's Gaia satellite, an international team has now demonstrated that dwarf galaxies might be out of equilibrium.
Published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, the study opens important questions on the standard cosmological model, particularly on the prevalence of dark matter in our nearest environment.
It has long been assumed that the dwarf galaxies around the Milky Way are ancient satellites orbiting our galaxy for nearly 10 billion years. This required them to contain huge amounts of dark matter to protect them from the enormous tidal effects due to the gravitational pull of our galaxy. It was assumed that dark matter caused the large differences observed in the velocities of the stars within these dwarf galaxies.
The latest Gaia data has now revealed a completely different view of dwarf galaxy properties. Astronomers from the Paris Observatory—PSL, the Center National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), and the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) were able to date the history of the Milky Way, thanks to the relationship that connects the orbital energy of an object to its epoch of entry into the halo, the time they became first captured by the Milky Way's gravitational field: Objects that arrived early, when the Milky Way was less massive, have lower orbital energies than recent arrivals.
The orbital energies of most dwarf galaxies are surprisingly substantially larger than that of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy that entered the halo 5 to 6 billion years ago. This implies that most dwarf galaxies arrived much more recently, less than three billion years ago.
Such a recent arrival implies that the nearby dwarfs come from outside the halo, where almost all dwarf galaxies are observed to contain huge reservoirs of neutral gas. The gas-rich galaxies lost their gas when they collided with the hot gas of the Galactic halo. The violence of shocks and turbulence in the process completely changed the dwarf galaxies.
While the previously gas-rich dwarf galaxies were dominated by the rotation of gas and stars, when they are transformed into gas-free systems, their gravity becomes balanced by the random motions of their remaining stars.
Dwarf galaxies lose their gas in a process so violent that it puts them out of equilibrium, which means that how fast their stars move is no longer in balance with their gravitational acceleration. The combined effects of gas loss and gravitational shocks due to the dive into the galaxy nicely explain the widespread velocities of the stars within the dwarf galaxy remnant.
One of the curiosities of this study is the role of dark matter. First, the absence of an equilibrium prevents any estimation of the dynamical mass of the Milky Way dwarfs and their dark matter content.
Second, while in the previous scenario, dark matter protected the supposed stability of dwarf galaxies, invoking dark matter becomes rather awkward for objects out of balance. In fact, if the dwarf had already contained a lot of dark matter, it would have stabilized its initial rotating disk of stars, preventing the dwarf's transformation into a galaxy with random stellar motions as observed.
The described recent arrival of dwarf galaxies and their transformations in the halo explain well many observed properties of these objects, in particular, why they have stars at large distances from their center. Their properties seem compatible with an absence of dark matter, contrary to the previous understanding of dwarf galaxies as the most dark-matter-dominated objects.
Many questions now arise, such as: Where are the many dark-matter-dominated dwarf galaxies that the standard cosmological model expects around the Milky Way? How can we infer the dark matter content of a dwarf galaxy if equilibrium cannot be assumed? What other observations could discriminate between the proposed out-of-equilibrium dwarf galaxies and the classical picture with dark-matter-dominated dwarfs?

Kohut Gamer Nation Bullshit #1
(CW: mentions of abuse and neglect)
We're engaged in a war against alienation and the solipsism it brings, marching towards meaning and connection with reality, and the very fact that I'm writing this post instead of doing anything else is evidence that we're losing.
"Consumption" has taken on a different meaning from "use".
"Property" has taken on a different meaning from "having".
"Production" has taken on a different meaning from "creation".
A commodity, to the consumer, contains no evidence of the work that went into its manufacturing as a used tool may in a different, more connected world. Property, to the owner, has no reason to exist aside from the owners own whims, no obligation to a community of others.
In the same way, the very structures of the social bonds we share take on a different meaning from what we might see in fleeting moments and call "love". The representations of self and other in our internal worlds take on a distinct character from wholeness, reality, "stakes". What I'm aiming to describe here is the process of alienation. Our war against consumerism, for example, is not a war against the production, having, and use of items - it is a war against consumption, property, and production; aspects of the cyclical generation and utilization of items which have become alienated from the whole of the process.
Whatever it is that we call love today is made up of emphasized aspects of what love may one day be, but that takes on a wholly different character through this overemphasis. Our war is one that examines and deconstructs this overemphasis, this aspect that has been alienated from the whole, so as to restore the whole.
The psychoanalyst Ronald Fairbairn believed that the baseline state of the psyche, the state we embody only in infancy, is one of unencumbered, free-flowing attachment hunger (crucial point, at the risk of yoinking myself off a little too much with this post: This is not the same as Freud's belief in the "oceanic" state of "primary narcissism". Freud believed that the infant had no recognition of the other as a separate object, but Fairbairn believed - and was eventually vindicated in this belief - that the infant began to recognize others as separate immediately from birth). It is not drive seeking, but "object seeking", reaching out to form connections with the other and thus to create the self. In Fairbairn's view, all forms of intrapsychic "structure", the ordering mechanisms that allow us to organize our internal experience, are inherently pathologic - borders which cut up the mind into discrete sections, isolating affects and thoughts, creating elements of the unconscious by splitting off aspects of the unencumbered self and locking them away. I'll be honest and say I don't really get anything else Fairbairn wrote, but I think about this concept a lot these days.
Heinz Kohut of Kohut Gaming fame, lesser known as a Psychoanalyst, points out something I believe is crucial in understanding the human condition and the state of the unencumbered self in his 1977 book The Restoration of the Self: "...in principle, the base line of psychological life is not revealed either in states of complete psychic equilibrium (the dreamlessly sleeping baby) or in states of seriously disturbed equilibrium, i.e., in traumatic states (the raging, hungry baby) - it is given in the experiential content of the first impulses towards the reestablishment of the psychic equilibrium at the moment it had begun to be disturbed (the healthily assertive baby who announces his wants)" - pp.105, emphasis my own. Here, Kohut recognizes that the babies aggression, what Melanie Klein (no shade, she basically invented object relations and for that she is an eternal legend) believed to be an innate supply of hateful feelings, and what Freud (infinite shade, total eclipse, darkness darkness darkness) dubbed the "death drive", isn't innate at all - it is a "breakdown product", the result of unmet attachment needs. The baby calls out for care, and when none is received, they reassert their need for care, increasing in desperation and what we might reasonably call aggression. In this way, aggression is seen not as a destructive force, but as evidence of an underlying and desperate need for creation, for the establishment of a connection.
Donald Winnicott of Winnicott Gaming fame, another highly influential psychoanalyst in the field of Object Relations Theory, reaches a similar conclusion in his essay, "The Use of an Object and Relating Through Identification". In it, he describes what he sees as a dichotomy in the way one perceives others. The first, object relating (and to clarify, as I should've earlier - "object" doesn't literally connote objectification, it's a loan word from Freud's language - others were seen as the objects onto which drives were acted upon. In this context, the object can be thought of as an internal and necessarily imperfect model of the other), is a way of experiencing the other in which they become the embodiment of ones own projected thoughts and feelings, a mirror of the self. This carries some pretty dire connotations, namely that of narcissism, but I want to hurriedly point out that this is a state we all find ourselves in regularly, and without it, our experience of ourselves would have no chance of consolidating into a genuine sense of self. In the second state, object usage, the object begins to truly exist outside of the self, understood as having an interiority that cannot be fully understood, but that can be reached imperfectly through empathy. The punchline of Winnicott's essay is that, in order to move from object relating to object usage, the object must first be *destroyed* - they must first demonstrate their ability to contain the extremely negative feelings and actions of the baby aggressively asserting their needs. The use of the term destruction eludes to an all too common tragedy of infancy and childhood - That we call it destruction; "...not because of the baby’s impulse to destroy, but because of the object’s liability not to survive..."
The significant other, the parent, the omnipotent object upon which you rely desperately, may not be able to contain the child's neediness. They may go cold and turn away, they may glibly ignore the child's cries, they may become rageful and destructive towards the child themself. If such experiences are commonplace, organizing structures build up in the mind. Schemas, object-relational dyads, family systems - whatever you call them, the effect is the same. Alienation. Finally, the beginning of this post is starting to make a little sense (hopefully. That was directed at me as much as it was at you, hypothetical reader)! Melanie Klein disagreed with Fairbairn's view that structure was pathological, but I'd contend that she still saw this process occurring in her patients, and aptly described the process as splitting, part of what she called the schizoid-paranoid position (schizoid here literally meaning "split off").
One of my favorite bands, Dismemberment Plan, said something surprisingly pertinent in their song Spider in The Snow: "The only thing worse than bad memories... is no memories at all." Better to internalize the angry, shaming, or dismissive voice of a destroyed object, than to internalize no voice at all. To internalize no caretaker. To internalize a caretaker who denies or attacks ones needs means that certain parts of the self necessarily have to be cordoned off - feelings of bitterness, anger, and hatred towards the caretaker (the result of decades of fermenting attachment hunger, of countless moments of needy and hopeful assertion denied and forgotten). We become alienated from ourselves and others, and though it's scarier to talk about, we actively begin to alienate others from themselves in our own minds, escaping in preconscious repetitions, moments of object relating that slip through our defensive line.
Do we know ourselves? Do we know others? Can we know others? Or is it too frightening, too close in proximity to our long denounced and denied feelings which we understandably, though perhaps faultily, recognize as destructive. "It's my anger that made them act like that". Fairbairn described this process as "the moral defense". My therapist describes it as a slow Monday.
Anyways I'm gonna shut up now, but before I do, let me try and tie everything together because it still doesn't make much sense, and I'm the one writing this fucking thing: I think as a culture we're all coming to the weary conclusion that something isn't right in the way we relate to each other. We recognize now more than ever the mechanisms of alienation that capitalism, consumerism, "democracy", etc. put upon us, and now it's dawning on us that there are mechanisms of alienation pervading our very sense of self and others - an alienation that's become so painfully clear in the way we talk about love, or really, the seemingly total absence of it. We don't know ourselves, we don't know others, and we don't allow ourselves to know others out of fear of our own cordoned off desperation for attachment. So to reiterate: we're engaged in a war. We've been engaged in this war since we were very young, and nobody has won the war since, likely, the dawn of organized civilization and patriarchy (note how we've probably been thinking in terms of the nuclear family this whole time - if not, you're based and a true Kohut Gamer. I'm not based, though, I'm brainpoisoned, and I'm trying to point out how the child's need to assert their attachment needs is deeply hindered by the lack of an extrafamilial community to pick up some of the slack, of the immense pressures placed on women who are very often the primary caretaker, and conversely, the persistent lack of men in child rearing by and large). Hopeless as it may seem, I believe that if the assertion of these analysts are true - that our baseline state is one of desiring attachment and working towards the fomentation of trust and care and love - then we can win. Someday, somehow, we can win. And we have to win.
"WE ARE FEROCIOUSLY RELIGIOUS and, in so far as our existence amounts to the condemnation of everything that is known today, an inner necessity demands that we be equally unyielding.
What we are starting is a war.
It is time to abandon the world of civilised people and its light. The time has passed for being reasonable and cultured – this has only led to a life lacking in any attraction. Whether secretly or not, it is necessary to become completely different, or else to cease to be." --- Georges Bataille, La Conjuration Sacree.

NORE’S CHOICE
Parts 8 to 10 of 10
MLP Fan Fiction
Of NORE’S CHOICE Parts 8 to 10 he said :
Of Part 8 : In teaching the Rom how to fuse these wodden pieces together, and learning how these horses hold things with their own version of magic, It makes me wonder. Does magic simply pass through all things at an atomic or molecular level, or are there some materials that would block even magic itself, meaning that ponies or horses couldn't lift it or move it?
In my AU, magic is fundamental. No such material exists. That was an error on the part of the Creator Titans. The whole world had to be made to follow basic laws of physics. The manipulation of magic, by ponies and other races, goes in direct violation/alteration of basic physical constants on a very small scale. This really didn't matter much, until there were millions and later billions of such events. The physical errors caused rapidly became huge.
Collectively, they work to cause major problems with the world, damaging its physical equilibrium and eventually rendering the world uninhabitable for its beings. Celestia and Luna were created by the Titan of Life Creation and given both the powers and the knowledge to make the necessary corrections to keep Equestria a safe place for ponies and others to live.
Of Part 9 : The soon-to-be Rom learn about pony weather teams and why they do not send the rains over Celestia's Anvil.
Marchhare learns more about the customs and music of these wonderful horses, and falls in love.
This was a fun, wonderful chapter.
Also, I just might have a little gift to post for you tomorrow, old friend. :)
Right. It is usually a matter for complex international diplomacy to send rains or set up weather control for other nations. In this case, due to the paired emergencies, the salvaged cloud systems were sent to and did break the drought in Gyptia.
Marchhare, as you observed, learns more about the customs of the band and realizes the importance of both music and dance to his new friends. And, as you observed, falls in love, though Nore had to sort of hit him over the head to make him realize it.
Glad that you enjoyed it.
Got your present and it was delightful! Posted it for all to read.
Of Part 10 : While their path will not be free of strife, the Rom have a very bright future before them, full of hope, love, music and dance. I do love this origin story, difficult though the journey may have been for them. It was more than worth it in the end!
Got to agree with you in every particular! This was the first section of the ORIGIN OF THE ROM. The next section is already in the queue.

The optics of Belarusian President Lukashenko playing a direct role in halting a military advance on Moscow are humiliating to Putin and may have secured Lukashenko other benefits. TheBelarusian Presidential Press Service announced that Putin informed Lukashenko about the unfolding situation in southern Russia the morning of June 24, suggesting Putin approached Lukashenko to resolve the armed rebellion, though the Belarusian government often spins interactions with the Kremlin to its advantage and this framing is unconfirmed.[42] Lukashenko reportedly used his own “existing channels” to clarify the situation on the ground and negotiate with Prigozhin.[43] Lukashenko’s reported access to previously established channels and successful negotiation with Prigozhin likely indicates Lukashenko has unspecified influence over Prigozhin he could leverage to deescalate the situation.[44] Lukashenko previously used Wagner forces to advance his election campaign after Belarusian authorities arrested 3 Russian citizens who allegedly belonged to the Wagner Group in late July 2020.[45] Lukashenko accused the alleged Wagner operatives of planning to interfere with Belarusian elections despite Wagner forces openly using Belarus as a transit country for their missions in the past.[46] The incident resulted in Lukashenko initiating a call with Putin on August 15, 2020, and releasing 32 Wagner personnel.[47] Lukashenko will likely seek to use the de-escalation of the armed rebellion to advance his goals, such as delaying the formalization of the Russia-Belarus Union State or preventing Putin from using Belarusian forces in Ukraine.
The Kremlin now faces a deeply unstable equilibrium. The Lukashenko-negotiated deal is a short-term fix, not a long-term solution, and Prigozhin’s rebellion exposed severe weaknesses in the Kremlin and Russian MoD. Suggestions that Prigozhin’s rebellion, the Kremlin’s response, and Lukashenko’s mediation were all staged by the Kremlin are absurd. The imagery of Putin appearing on national television to call for the end of an armed rebellion and warning of a repeat of the 1917 revolution – and then requiring mediation from a foreign leader to resolve the rebellion – will have a lasting impact. The rebellion exposed the weakness of the Russian security forces and demonstrated Putin’s inability to use his forces in a timely manner to repel an internal threat and further eroded his monopoly on force.

WHY DON’T WE AGE IN SPACE??
Blog# 195
Wednesday, May 25th, 2022
Welcome back,
Growing older can take a serious toll on the body. Bones become brittle, muscle shrinks, the immune system loses strength, and age-related ailments like arthritis can set in. More serious complications like declining cognitive function and heart disease can also take hold as the later years of life progress.
These symptoms can also come from something less common-space travel. Flying through outer space has dramatic effects on the body, and people in space experience aging at a faster rate than people on earth. Several papers recently published in the Cell family of journals look at the health hazards that spending time in outer space has had on astronauts. These studies showed that space alters gene function, function of the cell’s powerhouse (mitochondria), and the chemical balance in cell.
Tumblr media
The health effects of spending time in space resemble some age-related disorders, like cancer and osteoporosis. While the similarities of spaceflight to aging give concern for long-term space missions, like a voyage to Mars, the outer space environment also provides an opportunity to study aging processes in the body.
Scientists estimate that the heart, blood vessels, bones, and muscle deteriorate about 10 times faster in space than in natural aging. In other words, scientists don’t need to wait for their biological study subjects to grow older naturally on Earth—with accelerated health effects in space, they can run experiments on astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS).
But the effects of space travel are not exactly the same as aging, and many of the changes that occur in space reverse themselves when people return to Earth. The comparisons can still be useful, though, and scientists say time spent in space provides a good model for understanding the chronic process of aging. Maybe outer space living could reveal new methods for protecting ourselves from processes that make us grow old.
Tumblr media
Space affects different cell types in different ways, according to Michael Roberts, interim chief scientist of the ISS National Laboratory in a report in National Geographic. “It’s not a single acute exposure to toxic agents, for example; it’s something that’s long-term, chronic, and persistent.” Space life changes the body’s equilibrium for optimal functioning, thereby rebooting the way that cells respond.
In the microgravity atmosphere of outer space, the heart, bones, and muscle don’t need to work as hard as they do on Earth, so they weaken from disuse. Fluid-filled tissues may change shape because liquid flows differently in microgravity, which can change the shapes of organs like the brain. Not only that but higher background radiation outside of Earth’s atmosphere can cause DNA damage and increase cancer risk.
Tumblr media
The new research on the health effects of outer space living started with a study on astronaut twin brothers, Scott and Mark Kelly. Ten research teams monitored changes in Scott’s body during his year-long trip to space. The scientists then compared the changes to Scott’s identical twin brother Mark who stayed on Earth during that time. The research teams recorded differences in the twin astronauts ranging from changes in gene expression profiles, microorganisms in the gut (the microbiome), cognitive abilities, and cardiovascular systems.
A striking discovery from the NASA Twins Study was that Scott’s telomeres changed length. Telomeres are regions of DNA at the ends of chromosomes that protect the rest of the DNA from damage, decay, and fraying. Telomere lengths diminish with age and how quickly they shorten is an important indicator of health and aging.
Tumblr media
While Scott was in Space, his telomeres lengthened, but when he returned to Earth, they rapidly shrunk. Although his telomeres were longer during spaceflight, he ended up with shorter telomeres than he started with. Shortened telomeres have been linked to cardiovascular disease while longer telomeres are associated with cancer. So, either of these changes in telomere length can have negative health consequences.
Some of the health effects of spaceflight seem to equilibrate after a certain amount of time in space like decreased blood volume and changes in the lungs and heart. Astronauts haven’t spent enough time on the ISS to say with any certainty whether these changes in the body will reach a steady-state.

Trafalgar Square: Bridging Heritage and Modernity
Nestled in the heart of London, Trafalgar Square stands as an enduring symbol of the city's rich history and vibrant contemporary culture. This iconic public space transcends its geographical coordinates, serving as a living embodiment of London's dynamic evolution over centuries. From its historical genesis to its present-day relevance, Trafalgar Square continues to captivate both residents and tourists, encapsulating the essence of London's journey.
Historical Roots: Genesis and Transformation
The tale of Trafalgar Square commences in the early 1800s. Conceived as a tribute to the Battle of Trafalgar—a pivotal naval victory in 1805 led by Admiral Lord Nelson against the combined French and Spanish fleets—the square was christened in honor of the battle and as a homage to Lord Nelson's legacy. Architect John Nash, renowned for his grand designs, was instrumental in shaping the square's layout. Central to the square's design is the awe-inspiring Nelson's Column, crowned by a statue of Admiral Lord Nelson and flanked by four majestic lion sculptures crafted by Sir Edwin Landseer—a powerful representation of Britain's strength.
Tumblr media
Trafalgar Square's evolution transcends its commemorative beginnings. The mid-19th century witnessed the construction of the National Gallery on the square's northern flank, transforming it into an artistic haven housing a treasure trove of European paintings. This artistic infusion added another layer to the square's significance.
Cultural Hub: A Gathering Ground for All
Beyond its historical and architectural appeal, Trafalgar Square's true allure lies in its role as a communal space that brings together diverse individuals. It is a canvas where history harmonizes with contemporary culture. The expansive square has borne witness to a tapestry of events, ranging from political rallies to cultural fiestas.
Tumblr media
Arguably, the most iconic of these events is the annual New Year's Eve celebration. An international crowd converges here to usher in the new year with a dazzling fireworks spectacle, framed against the backdrop of Trafalgar Square's iconic features. The atmosphere is charged with an undeniable energy, encapsulating a sense of global unity and festivity.
Beside the New Year's Eve tradition, Trafalgar Square hosts an array of cultural affairs, spanning music festivals to avant-garde art installations. The Fourth Plinth, initially designated for an equestrian statue that never materialized, now serves as a rotating exhibit for contemporary artworks. This ever-changing display transforms the plinth into a modern-day creative platform, reflecting the fluid nature of art and culture.
Tumblr media
A Symbol of Cohesion and Expression
Trafalgar Square's importance extends beyond mere festivity. It has stood as a podium for expression and catalyst for change throughout its history. Its open expanse and central location render it a prime arena for public dissent and discourse.
Significantly, Trafalgar Square has been a nucleus for protests, demonstrations, and assemblies. These range from workers' rights rallies to movements against apartheid, underpinning the square's role as a locus for unity and free expression.
Tumblr media
Safeguarding the Legacy: Conservation and Tomorrow
Given its integral role in London's identity, preserving Trafalgar Square's heritage is paramount. Recent years witnessed extensive restoration efforts, ensuring the square's historical integrity while integrating contemporary amenities to enhance public experience.
This restoration endeavor was a collaborative endeavor, uniting architects, historians, and conservationists. The aim was to maintain the delicate equilibrium between historical significance and modern functionality.
Looking ahead, Trafalgar Square's legacy as a guardian of London's past, present, and future is secure. Its adaptability to changing times while retaining its core essence speaks to its enduring significance.
Tumblr media
In Conclusion
Trafalgar Square transcends its geographical confines to encapsulate London's soul. From its origins as a tribute to Admiral Lord Nelson's triumph to its present-day role as a cultural nexus, the square stands as a living embodiment of London's evolution. It has been a stage for history, art, culture, and activism, personifying the multi-faceted identity of London. Trafalgar Square's legacy as a symbol of unity, expression, and unyielding importance ensures it will continue to grace the cityscape for generations to come.

Complexity is fundamental to stable, peaceful nation-states with strong human rights guarantees. If there is a simple process for anything important then you have an ethical imperative to design and implement a process which is more complex. But which out-competes the simple process on the free market. Conversely, if there is a complex process which provides a critical good or service and you notice some way to provide the same good or service with less complexity at lower cost then you may have an ethical imperative to keep that to yourself. That fragile, insane, convoluted, Rube-Goldberg machine is a load-bearing component of the international political equilibrium.
Here at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, we worked this out a long time ago. Our department has been working diligently alongside corporate partners like IBM, Boeing, Monsanto, Johnson & Johnson, and more to make life more complicated, and by extension more stable. The automobile, consumer PC, and Boeing 747 are prime examples of the sort of thing we strive to enable, the sort of thing that prevents nuclear exchange. But every once in a while we do receive an application that runs....counter to our goals.

This interesting prayer was given in Kansas, USA, at the opening session of their Senate.
When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard:
"Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says: "Woe to those who call evil good", but that is exactly what we have done.
We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it Pluralism. We have worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism. We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have embezzled public funds and called it essential expenses. We have insitutionalised bribery and called it sweets of office. We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition. *We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh GOD, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Amen!"
The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest.
In 6 short weeks, Central Christian Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively.
The church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India, Africa and Korea.
With the LORD'S help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and WHOLEHEARTEDLY become our desire so that we again can be called "ONE NATION UNDER GOD.”
forward this prayer

Thanksgiving Turkey?
Tumblr media
In September 2010, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan disclosed idea for what he called a "crazy project". The project is a new 45-kilometre shipping canal running just west of Istanbul's two airports on the outskirts of the city, from the Black Sea in the north to the Marmara Sea in the south. Once complete, the Istanbul Canal will turn the entire European side of the Turkish city (which is already split on one side by the Bosporus Strait) into an island. He optimistically believes the Istanbul Canal will allow his country to take a greater role on the international stage of world commerce larger part of maritime traffic.
But public opinion in the country is singing different tune, especially in Istanbul. In spite of criticism, they proceeded with the plan, with work scheduled to begin in mid-2021 with an estimated build time of seven years. The $15 billion mega project is however, mired in controversy. It is expected to displace thousands of people living on the outskirts of
Istanbul, will result in an environmental disaster, cost a fortune, and risk sparking tensions with Russia. The Istanbul Canal is the latest, in a string of loss-making infrastructure projects, the government has embarked on since 2013, when Erdogan announced a $200 billion, 10-year building spree. These previous megaprojects have left the public out of pocket when expected revenue failed to reach ambitious projections, leaving the state to fulfil guarantees for companies under build-operate-transfer contracts.
Though Erdogan claims he is backed by research studies, environmental experts are sceptical. The canal will be dug in a wooded area, home to fresh-water sources that have been linked to the city's water supply system since the 17th century. Second, the environmental consequences could be even more destabilising, as the new canal is likely to upset the natural equilibrium of currents and counter-currents between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. But the president is turning a blind eye to such objections. For him, the canal is "the most eco-friendly project in the world".
The project's Environmental Impact Assessment states that around 201,000 trees will have to be cut down from an already heavily deforested country to make way for the canal. The route of the canal will completely envelop the Salizdere Dam, as well as run so close to the Terkos Lake, both of which account for around a quarter of Istanbul's drinking water. They will likely be contaminated with seawater and become undrinkable. The city, of around 16 million people, already has to pipe in water from sources 189 kilometres away to keep up with demand. As the seas meet around the city, the 30-centimetre water height difference between the Marmara and Black seas will also be problematic.
Current proposals include building two smart cities along the route of the canal. Environmental experts fear that the already worsening overpopulation and water crisis in Istanbul will only worsen if entire new cities are built. Experts also fear that the Istanbul Canal will make the city more susceptible than it already is to earthquakes, forest fires, and droughts. Backed by "encouraging studies", the government had launched the project with the guarantee that the company operating the bridge would see a certain number of toll payments.
The guaranteed number of passages is based on encouraging studies, but the reality is contradictory. Over the last decade, the number of vessels going through the Bosporus fell from 53,000 to 38,000 a year, due to an increased number of pipelines and a decreased dependence on fossil fuels in certain countries.
On top of that, doubts have been raised over the government's estimate of $1 billion a year in fees from ships using the canal, especially because of the waning demand. If the government can solve these issues, it will still face another problem: money. With Turkey's national banks shying away from backing the canal over concerns about its environmental impact and financial returns, finding the capital to complete it will be a huge challenge. Some economists have also warned it could end up costing twice as much as predicted.
Political Constraints
Russia, in particular, is not convinced of the benefits of the Istanbul Canal, as it fears the new canal would allow NATO vessels a more direct route to the Black Sea. The Turkish government has hinted that the new waterway wouldn't be subject to the Montreux Convention, a 1936 treaty that limits the number of military naval vessels that can traverse the Bosphorus Strait. The convention means Russia maintains military dominance over the Black Sea by limiting entry for American ships, but if the new route were not subject to the same rules, it risks sparking worsening tensions in the region and even a naval arms race between America and Russia. Once completed, Turkey would have the power to
control whose warships can traverse from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea, which risks a deterioration in geopolitical stability.
Critics see ulterior motives behind Erdogan's dedication to the project, beyond just growing his geopolitical influence. The short-term financial boost from land sales is seen as an election bribe by opposition parties and has garnered accusations of corruption after it was revealed that Erdogan's own son-in-law has invested inland. The canal is also just one of many mega projects launched by Erdogan, seen by many as an attempt to assert his authority and secure his long-term legacy.
Faced with opposition from the Turkish public and Turkish banks that claim they aren't willing to take the risk, Erdogan has gone as far as to defend foreign banks that are ready to finance his project. But foreign countries aren't hopping on the bandwagon either. Erdogan's political opponents have all said that they will not respect any state loans offered for the project if they win power in the 2023 election an election where, for the first time, Erdogan and his AK Party are at risk of losing power. If that happens, then what little funding there is will likely vanish along with all political impetus to forge ahead with the project.
Growth and vulnerability
Turkey has enjoyed a prolonged period of economic expansion, much of it bolstered by a construction boom propelled by easy credit from foreigners but in recent years the picture has turned gloomier, as Turkey's reliance on external financing comes home to roost whenever global investor sentiment turns against the lira. The lira has halved in value since a 2018 currency crisis, hitting a record low of 8.52 against the US dollar in November. Currently, inflation is stubbornly stuck in double digits with last month's clocking in at 16.2 percent on an annual basis. Unemployment also remains high, registering at 13.4 percent in February. The lira's woes intensified last month after Erdogan suddenly sacked Turkey's central bank chief, Naci Agbal, who had raised interest rates in an effort to rein in inflation - and who had, by doing so, clawed back some credibility for the bank with investors. Agbal was also said to be investigating how Turkey spent some $128 billion in foreign exchange reserves defending the lira under the stewardship of Erdogan's son-in-law, Berat Albayrak, who resigned as finance minister in November.
TASK AT HAND:
President Erdogan is entangled in all these controversies surrounding him, and 2023 elections are right around the corner. This mega project has been the dream of Erdogan and his government for years, and he cannot afford to look bad in the eyes of investors, public and especially the other global powers who are directly or indirectly involved in the mega project. The Integral Role of Anti-Money Laundering Service Providers
In the intricate landscape of global finance, maintaining the equilibrium of the financial sector emerges as a cornerstone for the economic prosperity of nations and individuals alike. A formidable adversary to this stability is the phenomenon of money laundering - a sophisticated process aimed at obfuscating the origins of funds accrued through illicit means to render them seemingly legitimate. The imperative to counteract this threat underscores the critical function of anti-money laundering service provider
s. These entities, through their specialized knowledge and services, are instrumental in identifying, thwarting, and ameliorating the impacts of money laundering activities, thereby fortifying the foundation of financial sector stability.
Comprehending Money Laundering
Money laundering unfolds through three principal stages: placement, layering, and integration. It commences with the insertion of illegitimate funds into the financial system. Subsequently, through a convoluted series of transactions, the traceability of these funds is obscured. Ultimately, the laundered funds are re-introduced into the economy as ostensibly lawful assets. This practice not only tarnishes the integrity of financial institutions but also propels criminal enterprises by offering a conduit for the allocation of their finances.
Effects on Financial Sector Stability
The repercussions of unchecked money laundering are significant and multifaceted. It precipitates a deterioration in trust towards financial institutions, as public confidence is shaken by revelations of involvement in money laundering schemes. Furthermore, it can provoke substantial economic distortions, including inflationary pressures, due to the artificial inflation of asset and property values. Financial entities are subjected to reputational harm, regulatory penalties, and the menace of operational disruptions, all contributing factors to an unstable financial sector.
The Pivotal Role of Anti-Money Laundering Service Providers
At the vanguard of combating money laundering are the anti-money laundering service providers. They proffer an extensive array of services, such as transaction monitoring, customer due diligence, and aid in adhering to regulatory compliances, thereby equipping financial institutions with the necessary tools to identify and mitigate risks associated with money laundering. Their specialized acumen is crucial in crafting resilient anti-money laundering frameworks, imperative for preserving the financial sector's integrity and stability.
Technological Advancements Enhancing AML Measures
The advent of technological innovations has significantly enhanced the efficacy of anti-money laundering service providers. Utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning enables the analysis of vast datasets to detect anomalous activities with unprecedented precision. Furthermore, blockchain technology offers a transparent and immutable ledger of transactions, complicating efforts by launderers to conceal their tracks. These technological advancements are indispensable in the contemporary anti-money laundering toolkit.
Regulatory Compliance and International Collaboration
Navigating the complex web of international anti-money laundering regulations is a fundamental aspect of effective AML strategies. Service providers play a crucial role in guiding financial institutions through this labyrinthine regulatory environment. Additionally, international collaboration among regulatory authorities, financial institutions, and service providers is paramount in addressing money laundering comprehensively. The exchange of information and best practices aids in the identification and counteraction of evolving threats to the financial sector's stability.
Conclusion
The stability of the financial sector is indispensable for the sustenance of the global economy, and combating money laundering is central to this endeavor. Anti-money laundering service providers stand at the forefront of this battle, offering indispensable tools, technologies, and expertise necessary for detecting and preventing money laundering. Their role is pivotal; in the absence of their contributions, the financial sector would be significantly more susceptible to the destabilizing influences of money laundering. As the fight against money laundering advances, the synergistic collaboration between financial institutions, regulatory bodies, and anti-money laundering service providers will continue to be essential in safeguarding the financial system's integrity and stability.
