11. if you're a writer or artist, what fic or piece of art are you proud of making?
omg, writer, and yes, most things i write i'm decently proud of at the end (or i wouldn't post them). but i was just looking back over the fic i cross-posted from my fanfiction.net account. and at one point, i rewrote the lyrics of "black velvet band" to be about the life of the gruff mentor guy from ranger's apprentice, wrapped some fic around it, and posted that as my brother. i have a distinct memory of sitting at the coffee table at my grandma's house working lyrics out on a notepad, ahaha. anyway. some pretty great turns of phrase in those lyrics from tween!hidey that i'm kind of shocked to find still hold up.
(at the time i was simultaneously reading a ton of ranger's apprentice and listening to a bunch of irish folk songs from a cd my parents got from the farmer's market that i was obsessed with.)

well i think i simply must say bucchigiri?! thanks to crab and ki, i don't know what's happening over there but y'all seem to be having a great time, or mayb my condolences. that blue-haired glasses guy ... he intrigues me. though, i did receive a very impassioned description of tgcf from rnack earlier this week that is a close second.

1. After months of searching, Wuyan had finally brought Di Feisheng a clue. [Perchance to Live, Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Li Lianhua/Di Feisheng. A descriptive opening that orients the reader as to where in canon it starts.]
2. Lan Qiren woke in the middle of the night. [The Wild Charge, The Untamed, Lan Qiren/Wen Ruohan. A short action sentence to begin an adventure.]
3. Waves lapped at his legs, stinging a little on the scrapes and cuts. [What good did it do, Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Li Lianhua/Li Xiangyi. A short descriptive sentence, orienting within a canon scene.]
4. "Unhand her." [Tomorrow Has Promise, the Untamed, Qin Su/Wen Qing. Dialog! Jumping into the middle of the action.]
5. "The Jinyuan alliance is so evil!" Xiao Zijin cried, flourishing his sword. [Moon and Wind, Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Di Feisheng/Li Lianhua. Dialog again. Setting the scene for a pre-canon conflict between the ship.]
6. "You are on edge tonight," Gu Xuanqing observed, lifting a hand and tracing Li Yunzhen's cheek, rubbing a thumb over the dark circles under her eye. [To Give Each Other the World, 长公主在上 Eldest Princess Above. Dialog. Getting to know the ship and where they stand with each other.]

9. Kingsley Shacklebolt woke up early, while it was still dark. [The people in your life who want you in theirs, Harry Potter, Kingsley/Severus. A mild action sentence.]
10. Li Lianhua did not take his eyes off the sea. [A Good Scheme, Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Di Feisheng/Li Lianhua/Fang Duobing. Another line to orient on the canon beach scene, which apparently all my MLC fics have in common 😂]
Conclusion: Alternating between scene description, action, and dialog. Not much in common other than that they are all short and (I like to think) punchy.

Hayloft II – Mother Mother. I had to listen to this repeatedly until I could sing along to the chorus. It's not, like, a long chorus, but I wanted to have the random gun sound effects perfectly memorized because it feels really good to say them exactly on beat.
Champagne – K. Flay. Similarly, "In a world full of uptight gentlemen I wanna find a boy smelling like sweet cinnamon to quote some Tennyson while we take Benadryl to make my head a bit extra light" goes so fast and is so fun to say
Soldier Poet King – The Oh Hellos. I found this on some fanart last year and I'm OBSESSED with it. What does it mean? I have no idea. Is it about Jesus? Maybe. Does it actually apply to the ship in the fanart? Not really. I don't care about any of that, I could listen to this on repeat for hours.
Runs in the Family – Amanda Palmer. Yes, it's Amanda Palmer and also yes, this song is like 15 years old. I don't care. IT'S SO GOOD.
Approximately every Mountain Goat song ever, but my most recent replay has been 'Estate Sale Sign': "I remember when we shared a vision, you and I / Worked hard to build this altar—we made it earn its keep / The cracks across its surface spiderweb while we're asleep / The sacrificial stains all spreading out and soaking through / But I remember when we kept it pretty, me and you". EdIzzy song? EdIzzy song.

Currently Watching: Just finished the BBC 80 Days Around the World a few years too late, rewatching Lie to Me as a timewaster until the live-action series of ATLA kicks off assuming I don't drop dead from anticipation first ;)

The thing about having a little bit of marital spontaneity in an incredibly haunted house was that there was a high chance of an unexpected audience. (Bone-Head, Ghosts, Alison/Mike/Humphrey. Establishes the general problem of the fic.)
When Blackwater visited, the lord of Ghost City knew he was about to get eaten out of house and home. (Feast for the Heart, TGCF, Hua Cheng & He Xuan. Drabble. Sets up expectations of the norm/establishes context/)
“What’s that, Papa Rei?” (Bonded pair, Buddy Daddies, Kazuki/Rei & Miri. Drabble. Establishes characters, opens with a dialogue question)
“These awareness campaigns can be kind of a double-edged sword, can’t they?” (The Devil is in the Details, Crossover Chainsaw Man and This Week in Parasitism Podcast. Drabble. Opens with a dialogue question, sets up the problem of the story (such as it is).)
This time, when they lit the incense burner, they emerged into a wooded mountain. (Shameless Dreaming, MDZS, WWX/LWJ & Mo Xuanyu. Establishes the context of the story in several ways.)
It happened at the beach, because that’s where Ken spent all his time, especially now that Barbie was gone. (Weird Ken, Barbie Movie, Ken/Ken. Situates the story as part of an ongoing, unknown situation, situates the story in reference to canon timeline.)
It had almost worked. (Putting the Future on Layaway, Warlock, Kassandra/Warlock. Situates the story as part of an ongoing, unknown situation but gives almost nothing else away.)
Nik had caught him at dinner pushing his food around on his plate and not actually eating anything. (Let go of all your burdens, Adventure World, Nik/Lamont. Sets up the context and establishes part of the problem, as well as something about the characters and their dynamic/relationship.)
The air in Nik’s room was heavy and cloying, full of vapour infused with some new concoction of medicinal herbs. (A Chance Encounter, Adventure World, Nik&Lamont. Establishes the initial setting and tells us a bit about the character's situation/condition and through this it's relationship to the timeline.)
“He knew, then?" (Led by the Hand, D&D Movie, Edgin/Xenk. Dialogue question that establishes this as reference to something past, but gives almost nothing away on its own other than it is about someone who is not present.)
Commonalities: Establish context/set up expectation of normalcy for the characters in a way that invites the reader to expect these to be inverted. Open with a dialogue question or a general observation. Refer to something happening ("it") that needs further elaboration in the text. For the drabbles - establish as much as possible as soon a possible (characters, setting, expectations).
I think these are really kind of all over the place, but most of them do have a 'hook' of some kind.
