When Nicky ambles back from the bathroom, it’s to find Joe sitting on the bed, sheets rumpled around him, studying his left hand. He’s naked—they both are—and there’s a welcome breeze blowing in through the half-open window.
“Penny for your thoughts,” Nicky says, pausing at the foot of the bed. He feels the familiar ache of loving Joe that lives permanently behind his heart, flaring into warmth with fondness
Joe huffs a breath of amusement. “I just . . .”  He holds up his hand. “So small a thing, and yet I can’t help but . . .”  He shakes his head and lapses into silence.
Nicky rounds the bed and sits beside him, drawing one knee up to balance himself.  He takes Joe’s hand in his, thumbs the intricate silver band around Joe’s ring finger.  “It means something.”
“After all this time,” Joe says, eyes on his hand and the ring, on Nicky’s thumb.
Nicky pulls Joe’s hand up toward his chest and places it over his heart.  The bump and pause in its beating makes Joe look up at him, a worried furrow between his eyebrows, but Nicky smiles and shakes his head.  “My heart still skips a beat for you, my love.”
Joe’s face softens, and he smiles a little.  “Romantic.”
“Hmmmm.”  Nicky holds his hand steady. “Do you remember Constantinople?”
It’s a heady thing, to be studied the way that Joe is studying Nicky right now. “The inn by the market.”
“That was the first time.”
Joe shakes his head a little.  “First time for what?”
“That I took you into my heart as my husband.”
Joe’s expression becomes fond, heartfelt.  “Nicky . . .”
“And then there was that village on the Steppes . . .” Nicky pulls Joe’s hand to his lips and kisses his palm.  “And the house we shared by the rice paddy in . . .”
“I get it.”
“Do you?”  Nicky turns the ring around on Joe’s finger. “There was Naples, and Manhattan, and Malta.  Always Malta.”
Joe turns the loveliest shade of pink.
“I have loved you and loved you and loved you,” says Nicky. “And yet there is something about this . . .”  He raises his hand, shows off his matching ring.
Joe lets out an unsteady breath and cups Nicky’s cheek, his gaze jumping from Nicky’s mouth to his eyes and back to his mouth. “Do you know that adore you?” he whispers, and leans in to kiss Nicky gently.
Nicky laughs into the kiss and pulls Joe close. “I have to say I had some idea.”

I can't stop thinking of how deranged he looks in this gif
Every Christmas Eve Harm visits the Vietnam War Memorial. He sets a small bouquet of flowers down against the glossy wall before he presses his fingertips to his father’s name and tells him he’s thinking of him.
This year it’s you that goes to the memorial, you that leaves the flowers, you that runs your fingers over the engraving before you tell Harmon Rabb Snr his son is thinking about him somewhere in the Indian Ocean.
“I appreciate you taking the time to do that for me.” Harm tells you over the phone later that evening, the line crackling like crazy and you have to strain your ears to hear the even timbre of his voice.
“You don’t have to thank me.” You say softly as you roll the sleeves of the sweater you’re wearing up to your elbows. It’s one of Harm’s, his white one, the scent of his aftershave still clings to the woollen collar as you pull it up just a little higher. “I know how important it is for you.”
This is the first time in over a decade he hasn’t attended the memorial and it weighs heavily on his shoulders. The last time he was in Russia visiting his brother Sergi. The two of them had toasted to their father instead with gold leaf vodka that Sergi had bought especially for the occasion.
“I’m sorry.” He says quietly. “About not being there for Christmas.”
It’ll be the first one the two of you have been apart for in your time together. You’ve developed your own traditions over the years. Usually after the memorial you curl up on the couch with Harm’s homemade hot chocolate and watch ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ his choice, followed by your choice ‘Elf’ and then the joint choice ‘Die Hard’.
Christmas morning is usually spent with Harm in the kitchen, it’s his favourite place in the house. He treats cooking as a form of creative expression and you always reap the benefits with delicious meals he makes. You’d had the kitchen renovated when you’d first moved in so that the worksurfaces fit his 6’4 frame. When Harm was docked in Naples he’d fallen in love with rustic Italian influences, that’s the way the kitchen has been designed. It’s a bright, airy space with wooden cabinets, a steam oven, a stove and indoor gas grill. The dishware came over with him from Perugia, the glassware from Murano. The kitchen table where you share meals is French country, a vintage piece he’d had shipped from a market in England.
When you’re missing him you sit at the kitchen table with your laptop because being in his space amongst these things makes you feel close to him.
“There’ll be other Christmases.” You remind him as you cradle the phone under your chin tucking the couch blanket around your legs. “Besides it’s not like I’m home alone, Alden’s hosting for the rest of us strays. We probably would have ended up there anyway.”
“Has it started snowing there yet?” He asks you and you smile glancing out of the window because Harm loves a white Christmas just as much as you do.
“Just started.” You tell him. “It looks like it’s going to stick.”
There’s silence for a moment and you can feel his longing over the eleven thousand miles that stretch between you.
“Will you think of me tonight?” He says finally, his voice a little rough.
“Harm.” You whisper. “I think about you every night.”

1950 – Mel Odom is an American artist who has created book covers for numerous novels, including a number of paperback editions of the novels of Patrick White, the Australian winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, and several books by fantasy author Guy Gavriel Kay such as The Fionavar Tapestry trilogy, Tigana, A Song for Arbonne, and The Lions of Al-Rassan. Dreamer, a collection of his work, with an introduction by Edmund White, was published by Penguin Books in 1984. Odom is also the designer of the Gene Marshall collectible fashion doll.
Odom was born in Richmond, Virginia, USA, and grew up in Ahoskie, North Carolina, where his parents encouraged his interests in drawing and in dolls. He majored in fashion illustration at Virginia Commonwealth University and then attended Leeds Polytechnic Institute of Art and Design in England for graduate work before moving to New York City in 1975.
Tumblr media
"Hard Stuff"
His Art Deco-like style established him as a commercial artist, at first via erotic illustrations for sexually oriented magazines such as Blueboy, Viva, and Playboy, the last of which named him their "Illustrator of the Year" in 1980. In the same year, he provided the cover art for Edmund White's novel Nocturnes for the King of Naples.
Tumblr media
"Mouth to Mouth" for Blueboy Magazine
During the 1980s, his work covered many commercial media. He created album covers for CBS Records and book covers for numerous other novels, usually in the genres of fantasy, mystery, or horror. He provided illustrations for the science/science-fiction magazine OMNI and (in 1989) a front cover for Time magazine.
In 1990, Odom proposed to design the cosmetic facepaint for Mdvanii, a 25 cm limited-edition collector's fashion doll. The experience renewed his childhood interest in dolls and led him to create a doll of his own, the 15.5" Gene Marshall.
Gene Marshall's appearance, wardrobes, and history are modelled on the glamour of Hollywood's golden age from the 1920s through 1950s. The doll made its commercial debut at the 1995 Toy Fair and was an immediate success, creating a wider market for large, fully articulated collector's fashion dolls in contrast to the slightly smaller and less flexible Barbie doll. Since then, Odom has largely concentrated his professional pursuits on the Gene Marshall doll, regularly modifying her design to create new variations and creating similar companion dolls to share her world, such as Gene's "co-stars" Madra Lord, Violet Waters, and Trent Osborn.
Odom continues to attend doll collectors' conventions to make personal appearances and buy dolls for his own collection, as well as to support charitable causes. Of his early friends in the art world, he estimates that two-thirds of them died of AIDS in the 1980s before the awareness and treatment of the disease became better known. At a 1997 doll convention entirely devoted to Gene Marshall, a charity auction of uniquely modified Gene dolls raised more than $30,000 for Gay Men's Health Crisis, an AIDS service organization.

1949 – Frank Ripploh was a German actor, film director, and author (d.2002). He is best remembered for his semi-autobiographical 1981 movie Taxi zum Klo.
Tumblr media
The film, produced on a shoestring budget of 100,000 DM, explored the day-to-day life of a Berlin schoolteacher who also led a very active gay sex life. Extremely explicit, especially for its day, Taxi zum Klo was considered groundbreaking for the subject matter it portrayed, and achieved something of a cult status among gay audiences of the time.
Ripploh also participated in the creation of a small number of other art house films during the 1980s, and had a role in the 1982 movie Querelle.
He died of cancer in 2002.

Given the size of Bianca's turf, I realized she'd need more than three capos to run it all, so I revamped a lot of things. Now, I may not ever write a number of them, but I do like to have the info on hand as it adds more depth. And I'm always a slut for deeper lore. Please remember that this is just how I visualize Bibi's turf/gang/whathaveyou and her rivals. I will not force this on others, especially those who are part of Passione and whom I interact with.

The city has ancient churches, narrow artistic streets, imposing palaces, and unique underground landscapes, many of which are situated within Zeppeli's turf. Naples is broken down into thirty quarters which are then grouped together into ten governmental community boards for administrative purposes. Zeppeli controls four of these administrative areas, for a total of nine quarters; these are marked in red above. Thus Zeppeli has eight capos, one assigned to each quarter with their share of soldiers. Now, you might be asking, Nana, you said there are nine quarters, so why only eight capos? Posillipo is watched over by Zeppeli's Underboss, Dante, himself.
1st municipality of Naples Posillipo An affluent residential quarter, located along the northern coast of the Gulf of Naples. Rocky, it is 6km (just over 3 miles) long and surrounded by cliffs with a few coves with breakwaters at the western end of the Bay of Naples. The stronghold of Zeppeli, palazzo Beatrice, is located here on the cliffs and is one of the safest properties within Napoli. Unless a certain spicy vampire is present in a particular verse. Chiaia An affluent neighborhood on the seafront, bound by Piazza Vittoria on the east and Mergellina on the west; one the wealthiest districts in Naples, with many luxury branded shops on its main street. It's also home to a business school, medical school, and a number of other public schools. A landmark is the large public park known as the Villa Comunale, developed in the late 16th and 17th centuries. San Ferdinando A southern district that includes the Royal Palace, Piazza del Plebiscito- the most celebrated square in Naples, the San Carlo opera house, and the church of San Ferdinando, from which the district is named.
5th municipality of Naples Arenella Sitting on Vomero Hill, above the city, and near the main hospital section, many years ago it was considered a place to "get away from it all". Vomero Up on a hilltop accessed by funicular, upscale, leafy, and dotted with gelaterias, alfresco cafes, and refined Italian restaurants; both chain and department stores cluster around Piazza Vanvitelli.
9th municipality of Naples Pianura Bound on one side by Soccavo and the other by the town of Pozzuoli, it's a lively residential area with archaeological sites like Roman mausoleums, and a Roman villa. Pizzaerias, dessert shops, and bars are in the historic center, where the 13th-century Church of San Giorgio stands in the main square. Bargain hunters often hit up the Mercatopoli Napoli Pianura thrift market. Soccavo A western quarter, bounded on one side by the area of Fuorigrotta and the other by the Camaldoli hill; at the base of the hill is a historic quarry, which gives its name to the area. While it's technically a division of Pozzuoli and not Naples, it was included within the administrative limits of Naples when it started being developed as a residential neighborhood in the 1920s.
10th municipality of Naples Bagnoli Beyond the confines of the original city, it's beyond Cape Posillipo, thus looking over the coast of the Bay of Pozzuoli. The North Warf is the longest promenade in Europe, while Città della Scienza is an interactive science museum for adults and children. Between the Astroni Reserve, which sits an extinct volcano, and the archaeological Terme area, there is Ippodromo di Agnano, the biggest racecourse in Italy and one of the oldest in Europe. Fuorigrotta Beyond Posillipo Hill, it is the most populated suburb of Naples, housing the San Paolo Stadium. There is a Roman bath, the Vesuvian Observatory, the oldest volcanological observatory in the world, and the Naples Zoo.
Within these quarters is Zeppeli's legitimate businesses: Restaurants, cafes, pizzerias, laundrettes, and nightclubs. Chiaia is the location of the five-star hotel, Beatrice; much like the palazzo was named for Bianca's grandmother, so too was Zeppeli's hotel chain, the first opening in Napoli back in the 50s. There is a Hotel Beatrice in New York, London, Tokyo, and Singapore, by 2001.
Of course, among all the glistening glamor, there is also the seedy underbelly of Zeppeli. Gambling dens, fight clubs, and whorehouses. But we'll get more into that later.

“This scene was cut from the original script, but I find it to be quite a pivotal one. It’s the first time Goncharov turns on Katya openly and violently, remarkably bloodless compared to the preceding fish market gun fight, but Goncharov bleeds profusely at Katya’s words here perhaps more than anywhere else. At this point in the film, we still have yet to see our titular character’s face, his visage always obscured in a cloud of smoke or behind a tilted hat, his embodied identity purposefully kept from us. More than anything though, we learn about Katya—the most we ever do in fact. This is the only chink in her perfect innocent story, never elaborated upon further.”
- Simone Gautieau, New York Times columnist, Goncharov: A Cult of Unpersonality (2024)
“THE MONEY” SCENE 17.
Rain comes down on Naples hard. The sky is grey and dim, visible from the dilapidated paneled window of an old house. A clock ticks, it is the deep thrum of a grandfather clock’s pendulum swinging from side to side.
Gnossienne no. 1 by Eric Satie fades in as we zoom out to see more of the room. The plaster is cracked and falling away. KATYA is playing at a grand piano situated by the window, facing the viewer. Her lipstick is blood red, her eyebrows furrowed gently in concentration. Her playing is emotive but she does not move with the music, it does not reach her eyes.
The music abruptly stops, leaving only the sound of the clock and the rain. KATYA looks up, and her blue eyes are clouded with annoyance.
KATYA: svolach, are you even listening?
The wooden floor creaks. CUT to polished leather shoes. CUT to a man’s mouth, his pencil thin mustache, puffing out cigarette smoke. We don’t see his eyes.
CUT to KATYA, looking down on her from GONCHAROV’s perspective. She wraps her fur stole closer around her neck and glares.
GONCHAROV: Of course I am. What gave you the impression I wasn’t?
KATYA: You can keep secrets, but I’m not a mail order bride. I know you’re lying.
GONCHAROV immediately interrupts before she can finish.
GONCHAROV: I never lie.
KATYA: We both know that’s not true. Where did you get the money from?
GONCHAROV: Found it on the street. A lucky game of cards. What answer will you accept?
The clock ticks. KATYA looks down and resumes playing, CUT to her hands on the keys, the light glinting off of her diamond engagement ring. The stone is oversized for her hand.
KATYA sighs.
CUT to KATYA’s face. She stares blankly at GONCHAROV, the face of the grandfather clock reflected in her eyes.
KATYA: You could have just told me you didn’t want children.
GONCHAROV: It didn’t seem relevant at the time.
KATYA: You knew I wanted them.
KATYA raises her voice but her tone is void of real anger.
KATYA: You and your pathetic limp dick, you care for no one but yourself, do you?
GONCHAROV: Settle down.
A beat.
KATYA: I lied. I don’t want children. I never wanted children. How does that feel?
GONCHAROV leans on the piano, knocking ash onto the polished black surface.
GONCHAROV: I told you already, Katya, I never lie.
KATYA: Well, I do.
GONCHAROV: You don’t. You’re telling me everything. Where the money is that you took, where you’ve been sneaking off to. You think I don’t know? It’s in your face.
GONCHAROV picks up Katya’s chin, smearing her lipstick with his finger.
KATYA: You think I do?
GONCHAROV: I know your father was family. I know you’re not dumb.
KATYA: I’ll spit on your grave before I tell you anything.
KATYA wrenches her face from his grip, but his hold tightens, forcing her back to look at him.
GONCHAROV: I’d rather keep things simple.
KATYA: And I’d rather have children.
GONCHAROV lets her go with a twist of his wrist.
CUT to the piano keys where GONCHAROV puts out his cigarette. GONCHAROV clears his throat, cracking a knuckle, pulling the piano lid abruptly over her fingers. The clock stops. KATYA hisses and swears in Russian under her breath at the pain.
GONCHAROV: You play well enough.
KATYA pushes the lid back and finishes the song, the last note hardly satisfactory to any party. She looks GONCHAROV square in the eyes.
KATYA: The money’s gone.
GONCHAROV: Where?
KATYA: Lost it in the street. An unlucky game of cards. What answer will you accept?
GONCHAROV leaves, and KATYA starts the song again. The clock ticks, time droning on and on. It never stops for long.

Thomas Ellerby - Portrait of John Wilson Carmichael - 1839
oil on panel, height: 25.7 cm (10.1 in); width: 20.2 cm (7.9 in)
South Shields Museum & Art Gallery, UK
Thomas Ellerby (10 January 1797 - 4 April 1861) was an English portrait artist whose work included 72 paintings chosen for hanging at The Royal Academy of Arts exhibitions from 1821 until 1857. He remained active as a painter until the end of his life.
James John Wilson Carmichael (9 June 1800 – 1868), also known as John Carmichael was a British marine painter.
Carmichael was born at the Ouseburn, in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, on 9 June 1800, the son of William Carmichael, a ship's carpenter. He went to sea at an early age, and spent three years on board a vessel sailing between ports in Spain and Portugal. On his return, he was apprenticed to a shipbuilding firm.  After completing his apprenticeship, he devoted all his spare time to art, and eventually gave up the carpentry business, setting himself up as a drawing-master and miniature painter. His first historical painting to attract public notice was the Fight Between the Shannon and Chesapeake, which sold for 13 guineas (£13.65). He then painted The Bombardment of Algiers for Trinity House, Newcastle, for which he received 40 guineas; it is still at Trinity House, along with The Heroic Exploits of Admiral Lord Collingwood in HMS "Excellent" at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent, painted in collaboration with George Balmer. Another important early commission was for a View of Newcastle for which the city corporation paid him 100 guineas. During the redevelopment of the centre of Newcastle, Carmichael worked with the architect John Dobson to produce some joint works, including paintings with designs for the Central Station and the Grainger Market.[4] He also collaborated with John Blackmore to produce an illustrated book: Views on the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway in 1836.
His name first appears as an exhibitor in 1838, when he contributed an oil painting, Shipping in the Bay of Naples, to the Society of British Artists. He showed both oil paintings and watercolours at the Royal Academy, his contributions including The Conqueror towing the Africa off the Shoals of Trafalgar (1841) and The Arrival of the Royal Squadron (1843).
He lived in Newcastle until about 1845, when he moved to London, where he was already known as a skilful marine painter. In 1855, during the Crimean War he was sent to the Baltic to make drawings for The Illustrated London News. His painting of the bombardment of Sveaborg, which he witnessed during this assignment, was exhibited at the Royal Academy and is now in the collection of the National Maritime Museum.
He later moved to Scarborough, where he died in 1868.
He published The Art of Marine Painting in Water-Colours in 1859, and The Art of Marine Painting in Oil-Colours in 1864.
His daughter Annie married William Luson Thomas son of a shipbroker and a successful artist who, exasperated by the treatment of artists by the Illustrated London News, founded in 1869 The Graphic newspaper which had immense influence within the art world.
