mythical water creatures
The unreachable depth and mystique of water whether it be a lake or the sea, has made mankind wonder about the creatures that may be living in it for ages. So here are 5 female water creatures that have lured naive men into insanity. (we stan)
Siren
Let´s start with a classic. Deriving from Greek mythology, the siren is a half human half fish or bird creature, seducing sailors and causing them to die by singing to them with their sweet voices which made them lose their minds. She is seen as dangerous, to be feared, but also as a tempting, beautiful woman. In some tellings where the sailor resists the sirens song, she commits suicide. The siren is a seductive and strong individual.
Undine
The undine is a peaceful water nymph from European myths, who lives in quiet forest lakes and sings charming songs. When she falls in love with a human man, she gets to have a soul and live a wonderful life as a normal girl. But should he be unfaithful to her, she would die. Which happened quite often, based on all the stories about her.
Rusalka
This creature from Slavic mythology is said to be the spirit of a virgin who was drowned and is now seeking revenge by enticing men and torturing them in their river. She is either portrayed as a cute and charming girl, beautiful and in white robes, singing a bewitching song or as a terrifying ugly naked being, scaring the passersby. Beginning of every summer, the russalki dance in circles under the moonlight, and everyone who joins them has to keep dancing until they die from exhaustion. How charming.
Loreley
This myth from Germany is about a virgin maid who commits suicide by jumping in a river because she got her heart broken by her lover, who misused her trust. Then she was transformed into a heartless siren who is on the hunt for fishermen and lures them into the water where they drown. She sure is a drama queen.
Mermaid
The well known mermaid, having a fish tail and human upper body, is portrayed as a beautiful, mostly with good intentions towards humans. Sometimes even falling in love with them. They like to sing and had magical powers which allowed them to see the future or heal wounds. But still they had a flighty and impulsive character, getting angry easily and causing floods for revenge or luring sailors into the water when they felt like it.
All female water creatures portray womanhood in every possible way, from a dramatic girl who got cheated on to an insane woman who wants to see every man on earth drown - we can definetely relate to them in some way. Let their stories inspire you xx

This is another movie that I watched due to it being winter. I knew that this took place out on the tundra in Finland. I've been intrigued when I first heard this one to see it out. Plus it doubled as a Trek through the Twos for me. Probably the only movie I've seen with a 'Were-Reindeer' which was a selling point. Have you seen this 1952 film from Finland? My thoughts are up on @davidosu87’s blog or the link below: Review: https://horrorreview.webnode.page/news/the-white-reindeer/ #thewhitereindeer #finland #mytholoy #fairytale #shapeshifter #vampire #winter #trekthroughthetwos #horror #horrormovie #horrormovies #horrorfilm #horrorfilms #horrorfan #horrorfans #horrorreview #horrorreviews #horrorreviewer #filmreview #filmreviews #filmreviewer #nothorror #horrorcommunity #horrorfamily #hashtag https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn68AnDOTY2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

lines from dance fever that made me go oh okay i’ve never had an original thought, huh:
-I need my crown of golden sorrow, my bloody sword to swing/my empty halls to echo with grand self-mythology
-sometimes I wonder if i should be medicated/if i would feel better just lightly sedated
-why don’t we go out to that ninth street diner and carry on slowly torturing each other
-and in my darkest fantasies I am the picture of passivity, waiting for you side of stage, suppressing all my private rage -but you could never hold me/like me better in your head -and if I run fast enough could I break apart/as empires crumble and cathedrals flatten in my heart -I never thought it would get this far, this somewhat drunken joke/sometimes I see so much beauty I don’t think that I can cope -there is nothing to describe except the moon still bright againt the worrying sky  -and I’m in ruins, but is it what I wanted all along?  -I should have come with a warning

The amount of fun that Midnight Museum is having with christian imagery and mytholoy is my favorite thing. There's three aspects of the same face, things cost 666 baht, one character is reborn after healing and being betrayed... it's just so fun. I love it.

Okay, buckle in because I have an SJMverse theory connecting all three of her series and what comes next.
I’m re-reading A Court of Silver Flames and I get to the scene where Nesta accidentally scrys during Gwyn’s singing and projects her mind to the chamber under the mountain prison where she finds the harp at the center of an ancient chamber that has wards (wyrd markings) and eight pointed star at the center, right under the harp. Time does not exist in this chamber. When Nesta asks about the star, Cassian says it might be part of the night court and then he says that Rhys mentioned once that it “might have even been an eighth court”. Nesta’s inner monologue makes it clear that she doesn’t believe it’s the night court because the magic feels different than night court magic. It would also make sense to have another court. We have four seasonal courts (spring, summer, autumn, and winter) and three celestial courts (day, dawn, and night). My theory is that there is a fourth celestial court that has to do with stars, just like the night court. But that comes later. At the center of this chamber guarded against time is an eight pointed star. You know where else we’ve seen an eight pointed star? When Bryce Quinlan from Crescent City does the drop, she’s left with an eight pointed star on her chest, the mark of the starborn fae. This makes me think that the “eighth court” are the starborn fae that were transported to Midgard and possibly another celestial court, like night, day, and dawn. Something to do with stars, so maybe a dusk court. Or…..The Twilight Court. Because twilight is the light from the sky between full night and sunrise or between sunset and full night. So between night court and dawn/day court. And you know what Sarah J Maas has on her goodreads page? A book that’s set to come out called..wait for it…….Twilight of the Gods. We have Twilight but where do the Gods come in? Are these the God’s Aelin banished in Kingdom of Ash? I firmly believe that the “Gods” represent the three leading SJM women. Sun, Night, and Stars. Aelin, Feyre, and Bryce.
Aelin Galathynius- Queen of Terrasen, representing the sun. Heir to Mala Firebringer, the sun Goddess of Erliea.
Feyre Archeron- High Lady of the Night Court, representing the moon. There’s many parallels drawn between her and Deanna, the goddess of the moon and sister of Mala Firebringer. Feyre’s abilities revolve around shadow and darkness and she wields a bow and arrow, like Artemis (basis for Deanna) from Bryce’s world as well but there she’s named Luna.
Bryce Quinlan- Starborn princess of the fae. Has abilities of starlight and the most powerful starborn fae in existence. She could be considered a god in her own right.
Three of them represent the God’s of celestial proportions. I have a feeling that Crescent City 3 will set up the ultimate plot and battle and culmination of all of SJM’s books in this book Twilight of the Gods. An Avengers: Endgame type of battle. Somehow, each of the major villains (the gods, the asteri, Hybern, the demon princes, Maeve, the prison under the mountain) from all the books are connected in some way and Twilight of the Gods will be the ultimate crossover between all three worlds and have Aelin, Feyre, and Bryce fighting together. Maybe even combining their magic. What makes me think this even more is the title. Twilight of the Gods. You Google it and the first thing that comes up is a reference to Norse Mytholoy and Ragnorak and “a series of major events foretold to result in the death of a number of gods”. Bryce lives somewhere named Midgard, also from Norse mythology. The God’s being killed are the gods Aelin banished and maybe the asteri. Maybe they’re even the same. I may sound like a lunatic but I think it’s a solid theory? Any thoughts lol?
Oh and I think the third Crescent City book will be called House of Flame and Shadow because not only is that one of the houses in Crescent City, it’s also two words used in one of the Throne of Glass books to describe Aelin. I forget which one and the passage but I know she’s referenced as flames and shadow. Flames because of her magic and shadow for her being an assassin.

Bit of an odd question, but are you the person who wrote that one Artemis x lady-I-can't-remember-the-name-of story, that described part of the sex as like blood gushing from a fatal wound, but it was only a little death? Because that was the best smut-related turn of phrase I've ever come across in my life, and it's been living in my head rent-free ever since I read it.
Ahhh, yes! That's from my story "Artemis and the Huntress", the pairing is Artemis x Polyboia (Hyakinthos' sister):
"Relax, my girl." Artemis whispered. "Let it happen." Polyboia closed her eyes. The climax hit her like a point blank shot, liquid gushing from her womanhood like blood flowing from a fatal wound. But it was just a little death.
I wanted to use something a bit feral but also I love word plays 😅
Thank you so much for the compliment, it makes me incredibly happy to know my writing left such a lasting impression 💖

Part 1: The historical explanation behind my upcoming worries
December is here, and as some of you might have already known, Geert Wilders (who some of you know as the Dutch Trump) has won our elections. Now, to anyone who wonders what that has to do with December, let me explain one of our holidays to you and the recent political circus surrounding it. Perhaps some of you might have heard of the holiday 'Sinterklaas'. Some people, to this day, think this is a part of Dutch Christmas celebrations but it's an entirely seperate holiday that during the colonial period got confused with Christmas and Krampus legends by English speakers because it has some similarities to those and American Christmas is actually a bastardization of Christmas and Sinterklaas. The naughty list, saint Nicholas, that's all Sinterklaas. Now, why this is controversial has to do with his servants, de zwarte Pieten (black Petes). A quick Google would show you the MODERN version, is blackface and BLM made a documentary about it. The keyword over here, is modern, because whilst the BLM claims we only started doing this since the colonial period to mock black people, that is a blatant lie. There's an entire history surrounding it that has nothing to do with black people, but the black painted skin rebranded into a blackface concept. Because Germanic tribes were less prone to write their stuff down unlike the Romans and pass it on verbally, we don't know the full details about the original tradition, but we do know some things. For one, the blackface? Actually stems from black warpaint. Look up Heilung, they are a band inspired by both Viking as well as Germanic history, wear actually historical garments and their make-up is actually accurate unlike those cringy people on TikTok who've seen American viking shows. Heilung actually often has the male band members do the original black warpaint so you can see for yourself that the original look had nothing to do with blackface. Perhaps some of you might now be confused how a holiday involving warpaint became the children's magic we know today. Any of my followers who are following me for my Shadowhunter content, are familiar with the Wild Hunt. In the Shadowhunter novels they are a band of wild Faeries, in Germanic folklore, they were the souls of those who died an unnatural/violent death who continued to wage war on the enemy after death. Its important to note that to the Germanic tribes, the Wild Hunt were either led by Wodan (Odin is his counterpart in Nordic mytholoy) who Sinterklaas was adopted after, or Holda, the mother of nature who was also our goddess of death because the Germanic people understood life and death to be a fundemental aspect of nature itself. Her Nordic counterpart is Frigg, the fairytale Frau Holle is inspired by her legend and there's also a Sinterklaas tradition that refers to older aspects of the tradition and asking her for a good harvest (23 December to January 5 was her sacred period). Long story short: It seemed like a mix of the Celtic Imbolc & Dias De Los Muertos. Which is why Saint Nicholas was probably chosen as the patron saint of the Christianized version. He's a mythical saint (the Church acknowledged they made him up), who supposedly had ressurected a dead child. See the common theme of unnatural death? It was easy to parade him around like Christianized Wodan, and the black warpaint was reframed to be about sin, and Sinterklaas' helpers used to be boogeymen scaring bad children into behaving well. Now, like I said in my earlier post about the Church, they had propoganda saying black people had their skin color because they were supposedly the descendants of Kain, and if you take into account how most Dutch citizens had never actually seen a black person before as we kept our slaves in colonies only, black people had a certain mystical element at the time. When science became more of a thing and skepticism started kicking in, black people seemed to be the perfect rebranding to the less believable boogeymen. part two: my feelings about this epic blunder and regarding the political agenda

Rating: 5/5
Book Blurb: In this utterly transporting reimagining of Greek mythology, the god of desire is cursed to fall for a spirited young mortal woman, but if she looks upon his face they will be parted forever—an epic adventure and love story for the ages, sure to satisfy fans of Madeline Miller and V.E. Schwab
Who said true love is a myth?A prophecy claims that Psyche, princess of Mycenae, will conquer a monster feared by the gods. Beloved by her family but at odds with her society’s expectations for women, Psyche trains to become a hero, mastering blade and bow. When Psyche angers Aphrodite, the love goddess enlists Eros, god of desire, to help deliver a cruel curse. Eros is the last born of the eldest gods, dry-witted and jaded, unsure of his place in the cosmos. The last thing he wants is to become involved in the chaos of the mortal world, but when he pricks himself with the arrow intended for Psyche, Eros is doomed to yearn for a woman who will be torn from him the moment their eyes meet.A joyous and subversive tale of gods, monsters, and the human heart and soul, Psyche and Eros dazzles the senses while exploring notions of trust, sacrifice, and what it truly means to be a hero. With unforgettably vivid characters, spellbinding prose, and delicious tension, Luna McNamara has crafted a shimmering and propulsive debut novel about a love so strong it defies the will of Olympus.
Review:
A new take on the classic myth of Psyche and Eros, and what a fantastic one it is! The story follows Psyche, the princess of Mycenae who was prophesied to conquer a monster feared by the gods. She was raised as a warrior, trained to fight and kill monsters, something completely at odds with the society she is raised in. She wants nothing more than to become a hero, but she somehow manages to offend the goddess Aphrodite who in turn enlists Eros, the god of desire, to deliver a cruel curse to her. An unexpected thing happens when Eros accidentally pricks himself with the cursed arrow that was meant to curse Psyche to fall in love with the first person she saw and be forever separated from them. Eros the god of desire has never truly been in love, he has spent his time just laying low and living day by day watching humans and the mischiefs of the gods... and now suddenly he is consumed with a desire for Psyche but knows he cannot ever show her his face or else they would be separated. Now Eros and Psyche find each other married, but with gods who scheme to get revenge against Eros, and all his lies... can their love survive and is it true? This was such a fantastic retelling of the story. I enjoyed it so much and it did remain true to the myth while adding in so much more depth and layers. I liked that we got to read from both Psyche and Eros’s POVS and see how both of them fell for the other and how much they both go through to get back together. This is seriously the perfect read for fans of Greek mythology!
*Thanks Netgalley and William Morrow for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*
