All About the Goblins

In the whimsical yet slightly neurotic world that is my Tumblr, I'm embarking on a series most peculiar, one that delves into the lives, loves, and lamentable laundry habits of goblins. Yes, goblins - those misunderstood, often malodorous denizens of places we'd rather not visit after dark (or even in broad daylight, to be perfectly honest).

Each post will be a foray into the goblin psyche, which is as convoluted as a maze designed by a particularly sadistic architect with a penchant for Escher prints and Kafka novels. We'll explore the intricacies of goblin social etiquette, which primarily involves not eating one's dinner guest, and the complexities of their economy, which is largely based on the barter system, shiny objects, and the occasional mildly cursed artifact.

Expect tales of goblin romance, as fraught and passionate as any Shakespearean drama, but with more warts and a significantly higher risk of accidental poisoning. We'll meet goblins who are poets, philosophers (albeit of a rather gloomy disposition), and even a few who fancy themselves as chefs, though their definition of 'haute cuisine' might make the average person opt for a prolonged fast.

So, grab your metaphorical torch and pitchfork (or actual ones, if you're feeling particularly adventurous) and join me on this journey. It promises to be erratic, occasionally eerie, and possibly educational, but I guarantee it will at least be more entertaining than watching paint dry - unless it's goblin paint, which has a tendency to scream as it dries. Stay tuned, dear reader, for our first foray into the world of goblins - creatures who remind us that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and sometimes the beholder just needs a good optometrist.

The Soul's Quest

In the silence between breaths, within the echoes of unsaid whispers, I embarked on a journey. A quest, not of maps and compasses, but of the uncharted terrains of the self.

When ducklings are hatched and raised by owls and chickens, we transcend and understand intuition’s clear voice.

Sound is magical, formidable, and transformative. A favorite sound of mine is acid house, faithful companion since 1988. Its electronic, rhythmic, repetitive, textured, rising, ebbing, flowing, expansive sound is an elixir for concentrating on inner space.

The mystical number 33 manifests as the total playing time.

Prince’s seminal ‘Make-Up’ is followed by dear Annie Sama’s ‘Animal’…her scintillating, watershed tour de force. (I was so excited when Annie told me while visiting, ‘I’m doing acid house’…a revelation!)

Fangoria’s futuristic cover of the Hidrogenesse classic ‘Disfraz de tigre’ highlights the mystical quality of the lyrics—being one with machine, rock, plant, animal... «It’s the song I’ve been waiting my whole life to hear,» I told Gail, and Hapi, freshly arrived in town, while riding to Kelly’s in a Lyft.

Also a new release, ‘Skylon’, by 808 State, reminds me of the tower observatory in Niagara Falls, a signifier of comfort and confirmation, which I last saw with Dominic and Tony. (Interestingly, the iron scow that’s been stuck in the rapids of the Horseshoe Falls since 1918 has moved forward 160 feet, during the storm last All Hallows’ Even.)

Alpha Omega’s ‘Ravers Delight’ I heard late at night on my Saba Sandy, while editing to the beat of $mall ¢hange’s brilliant Nickel and Dime Radio broadcast (Thursdays from midnight to 3 a.m. on 90.1 WFMU-FM). The Garden of Eden’s eponymous anthem from 1988 is medicine music; the Super Version of ‘Left to My Own Devices’ is Pet Shop Boys’ acid update of my favorite song of theirs.

WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE HANA, for today we choose this song which represents a lot to us, it carries that mystical deep feeling that we feel immersed in when we DJ or want to feel able to connect within. “Chimera” is part of Hana’s EP HANA. We came to know her through the amazing Grimes (ART ANGELS) and their video-music project; together and as best friends they created the psychotropic experience that is Acid Reign Chronicles (HANA + ART ANGELS). We invite you to see all the videos and to enjoy. 

A side note, we DJ’ed this song for the first time at the Tropidarkz event in Puerto Rico, celebrated specifically on the night of the Winter Solstice, December 22nd of 2018. We tried to communicate a transcendental experience of understanding, love and healing and how all these aspects come together as one, similar to what we call life. In this song, as explained subliminally in the lyrics, Hana seems to be going deep within to communicate pain, disenchantment / ENCHANTMENT, transformation and growth. We come to understand how different seemingly contradictory aspects can be one in music. In her song, accompanied by subtle vocals and powerful synth-pop transitions and flows, she talks of “chimera”, which we learned is not only a dream or something that seems far away, as in lost at sea, but a mythological greek creature composed by two entities (maybe male and female or non-gendered) that breathes fire. The song does, truly, speak by itself. We hope you enjoy the ride.
