While I will absolutely agree that CB2077 isn’t the ONLY game doing all this bullshit, or that other AAA studios don’t deserve the flack CDPR is getting, I have to say that this is absolutely the perfect storm and I think people are FINALLY seeing the problems in modern AAA gaming. CB2077 might be fun to play, may have a good story, but it’s almost impossible to see because of the glaring issues. Which, honestly, is a good thing. I hope games change after this.

AAA studios have been like this and this sort of release has been completely normalised on all accounts by both the businesses themselves and fans because of the inherent reliance on modders (bethesda at the forefront of this), as well as the pushback every time companies actually go ‘uh we need a lil more time’ (although... they just shouldnt announce potential release dates, im even of the camp they shouldnt even start releasing the game until like 6 months out from their official date because they fuck it up every time. borderlands 3 being the only game i know of being in “secret” development and then announcing itself in march for a september release. game itself aside, thats how companies should do it). easily i can remember a lot of 2011 release games which have had the exact same issues as cp77′s release, and then every other game in between since. very rarely do you actually have a game that isn’t a fucked up mess of a pile of pixels. and it is always the customisable character ones that are honestly, genuinely, ugly looking at release. but you can definitely say its been happening looooooong before 2011, with unrealistic expectations, word limits, 11 month time frames, offloading sequels to smaller companies so they can suffer if it fails, etc etc. the entire system has been like this for so long... they dont know any real different nowadays.

i mean look. tlou2 released under crunch conditions this year, and was rewarded. it was ALL over the social media feeds, it was quite the controversy because, surprise surprise, the company promised they wouldnt do it uwu and then. bam ! crunch conditions. literally around that time too, bioware employees came out with a statement saying ‘man we wish dai FAILED so that back in 2014 we couldve proven crunch was a wrong practice’. they say this as well after having to produce da2 in 14 months, which just suffered from fans and journalism for reusing environments, because it was produced in 14 months, and honestly? no one pointed that out back then, bioware themselves pointed it out again this year, 6 years after release, that that game was produced in 14 months. rdr2′s release was hounded by stories of crunch, and they all disappeared into the night because... it was heralded as the best game of all time. that was 2018, 2 years ago.

i think too is that some people get kind of ... morally and ethically concerned. which is understandable. can you consume something when you know it was made under conditions like crunch? and i think one of the most confronting things about it is that 9/10, not only has your favourite company engaged in crunch conditions, they almost actively choose to continue with them. and then that’s a whole other bag of issues blown up over there when it comes to what is able to be consumed what isn’t etc etc

i think also like a mix of marketing, promises and then the expectations of what the game will be like have really had cdpr earn the ire of fans which is just like... you don’t believe what these companies are saying. you never should, esp when it’s their ceo’s saying it who don’t work on the actual floor. bioware itself is the main culprit of doing this to the point they finally came around with all the da4 concept art and teasing to be like ‘ummm but actually dont get invested?’. remember all that qunari lady fanart that bioware management was like ... please dont get attached? yeah. yeah. like at what point as well is there going to be heavy level of apprehension to approach this? and i can’t really talk either, i cracked open the door for mass effect again. i know exactly what kind of shit bioware will pull, i know they are teasing it already on social media, but mass effect is my ride or die series. that’s why people keep opening the door on letting these companies get away with it. and you can’t fault fans entirely either because this is down to a science of how to get money. i mean, fuck, mass effect andromeda’s entire advertising campaign HINGED on the n7 logo. for the nostalgia value. and i see text posts in the same vein of both ‘guys, disney isnt gonna fuck you if you consume every remake for nostalgia value’ and ‘its understandable why people do it’.

so then you have to go ‘well are fans as just to blame’ and then that’s a whole other argument.

i think also like. i personally havent run into aaaannnyyyyyyy of the issues that you see posted online. which is ironic bc 1) i play on ps4 and 2) its an old dusty ps4. in fact a lot of ppl i have spoken to who have had issues have played on pc. does this mean the glitches dont exist? ofc not, the vids and screenshots are right there. but like... ive had a basically unhindered experience so far, and i get where ppl are coming from (i do, i promise) where theyve basically found the game unplayable. is there also a standard of what ppl consider unplayable because ive played most AAA games at launch when they basically rushed to slap the box label on the game and called it a day until they work on patches. when ppl consider unplayable is also just... different per person. some people have a slight blur on the screen when turning too fast even in an MMO and decide the game is horrible and unplayable. some people can have broken quests and npcs not loading and falling through maps and still be fine. there’s no agreed statement of what makes a game unplayable either, which is why you read threads on twitter and someone goes ‘yeah this npc t-posed so i quit in the first hour’ with a dozen replies. everyone has different levels of it.

it’s a mixed bag of issues. im not excusing cdpr, but the ppl who worked on the game are honestly likely not the ones who pushed for a release. you’ve gotta look at sony and microsoft and ceo’s with bonuses coming up and the investors and shareholders and people who sit behind computers and read numbers detailing interest and demand and supply and how every single time they had to delay this game, the loudest (but smallest) bunch of assholes on like reddit and in the twitter threads complained that it was delayed AGAIN even though back in what 2015? they said it’ll come out when it’s ready. and yeah there are times when game delays result in a mismatched half assed sort of story (kh3... p5... ffxv... dai...) and then there are times when, if they need to delay the game... they probably need to delay the game. sometimes delays are bad sometimes theyre good sometimes you are sitting there like whew if you only didn’t try to be like THIS TIME this is the release date.

the ONLY WAY this will stop happening is, quite frankly, unionising. and everyone is allergic to that whole concept so like... this is “the perfect storm” as you put it. but it’s also not. people have been so disappointed over the last 2 years alone for gaming companies, the final product, the attitudes from higher ups, that i think cdpr is receiving a good few years worth of anger. i think theyre also on the receiving end of misdirection from american fans who still don’t fucking get the company isn’t american, because that’s another bag of issues as well. like we’re holding at least 8 bags of groceries out of the back of the car now, and we don’t want to take another trip, because there are so many little bits of this entire situation to look at. there’s so much back and forth.

i think the worst, but most realistic thing is: games won’t change. how they will social media wise will. maybe. assuming bioware gets their heads out their asses but... they’re going to be a lot more careful. i mean, hell, sony offered refunds. that was just a publicity stint. they dont give a fuck if the game was bad. as i said before, if they did, they would make all companies fix trophy problems, starting from like 2010 or whenever the trophy system first came out. they just don’t wanna fall in alongside cdpr being thrown on its sword. but the companies are gonna learn from this, get smarter, still do the same shit to their employees, still pay off journalists, still do media blackouts, etc etc. and we’re gonna be here in another year’s time, with another game, having these same roundabout arguments, and cp77′s issues are gonna fade into just a wikipedia article.

been considering remaking for a long while now. idk im probably gonna make this a short post (im incapable of keeping my thoughts short im lying to you) because im playing p5s (FORGOT TO SAVE LAST TIME I PLAYED AND IM SO FUCKING PISSED. IM ALSO OUT OF MONEY AND UNDERLEVELED AS FUCK IN OSAKA RN SO I JUST HAVE TO GRIND AND ITS FRUSTRATING CAUSE THATS NOT TOO FUN UGHHGHGH) right now so i can have more entertaining things to do but i feel like posting about it. idk i only have 12 people that i actually interact with and whatnot and its like. wtf are the other 230 for yknow? i mean its mostly just inactive accounts and people back from when i was a either a jjba blog or homestuck blog and its like i also follow a whole boatload of accounts that i also dont care about and since ive had this blog for years theres a lot of stuff on here that i dont care about either on here and i suppose instead of manually fixing all these problems a remake could just. solve all these in one quick go. issue is that like, id have to queue up all my posts in my savetag and pinned shit and also my p5 blog! id have to go out and get all my stuff from my p5 blog again and all that and i think if i remake im just gonna put the stuff i like + also the thing i have to say on my main instead of on seperate accoutns yknow? id also lose my blocklist which is. something im unfortunately proud of. i put a lot of effort into being too online yknow? anyways. idk i feel like remaking could just be a quick and easy fix for a lot of the problems i have on this site, also i have some good urls that i dont exactly want to lose. like i have a few good ones yknow? 2 (i think theyre canon?) persona urls! i love that! I think I’ve found a good balance between keeping the environments fresh and retaining the liveliness of P5. This way I can reduce environments to whatever’s necessary to each area without being drastically inaccurate.

In Yongen-Jaya in particular, there is only the Second-hand Shop, Takemi, Medical Clinic, Cafe Leblanc, and the Bathhouse.

Excluded are places like the movie theater, supermarket, the Sakura residence, and batting cages (proficiency will increase a different way).

This style is also a simpler way to draw the environments. I like to think of the buildings more as UI this way.

In general, I’m a lot happier with the new direction. I feel like I can create environments faster and make them look stronger.

What’s Next?

After all this, I’m going to take a small break from this for job-hunting, but these are my next set of plans:

Completed pause menu. I was hoping to show off more, but I ended up not getting it done. A mockup video of the completed test menu will be the next major update instead. I think it works better that way. The pause menu is a big monster by itself, it should have it’s own separate video. I can move forward with what I have right now, so I can work on the two things back and forth.

Start working in the engine. I’m likely going to work in Unity, but so far I’ve found it very non-user friendly for beginners. The online tutorials and support is expansive though, I think I can figure it out with time.

I’m considering maybe switching to Ren’py, a pre-built visual novel engine. A lot of what I’ve shown off is also possible in Ren’py with tons of base script tweaking, and I don’t have to start building from scratch like Unity.

It’s currently a toss up which one I might use. I’m going to try out Unity first and see how it goes.

(And before you ask: yes, I will consider asking for volunteer help later. Before any of that happens, however, I want to decide on the engine for the game. If you’d like to offer help in some way, hold off on it for a wee bit longer. I’ll make a post about it after some work on a build has been made.)

Why, hello there.

First post of 2019 here, and let’s get the ball rolling! Also, I hope everyone had a fine New Years party, or event, or what not.

You can call me, ‘Bo’, I’m 21+, and I live in the East Coast, USA. With a part time job, my replies do vary throughout the day; that said, I do try to get a good message per day.

Real life happens, and I understand.

I love OOCC and encoaurge it; it always helps to get to know your partner a little more, as we write. Also, its there, so we can plot things out, and such. Make sure each other is doing well.

My writing style is: Third Person POV, past tense. I will DOUBLE, or play more characters. I have some experience GM/DMing, too.

Also, I do have a small thing for Romance, so I will mention my ships, if there are any for any of the Fandoms I enjoy. Quick note on that: Most of my Ships are F/F or FxF, however you wish to write it.

I prefer to stick to Canon characters , for us both. Sorry if that is a deal breaker. I will listen to any OC ideas you have, but 9/10 times, I’ll ask we go with Canons.

Treating Rps like AUs are fine. We don’t have to play into Canon events.

Dragon Ball/Dbz:

((Ship I like- Gohan X Videl) My idea for this, is to have an AU, where the Buu saga events never fully took place. Instead,Gohan goes to school, and adopts the Saiyaman Persona. I’d like to play with this more, Gohan fighting Crime, while balancing School life. Videl trying hard to discover who is under the mask.

She is more than welcomed to become Saiyawoman, and the duo become a crime fighting team. We can create our own Villians/Criminalds for the two to Handle, so there is some room for OC characters in this.

CW’s Arrowverse/ DC’s Tv Universe:

My idea for this, is set in a future that takes elements from all of the shows’ futures seen. A dark future where- Green Arrow/Oliver Queen is a broken, One armed man. The Flash/Barry Allen has gone missing after the events of Crisis, the Legends were lost to time, ARGUS has started to Meta Human restriction laws and have taken a hard approach to it.

The Main focus would be on a new Trio of Heroes. John Diggle Jr/New Green Arrow, Nora West-Allen/Xs, And Perhaps someone from Supergirl’s family/blood-line. Starting plot would be Nora trying to discover what happened to her father, by going to Star City- a city now worse off than Gotham. A new DeathStroke has taken Charge, and the newly formed Speedster will have to gain new Allies to find Oliver Queen and get closer to discovering what happened to her father.

Power Rangers: 2017 Movie:

((Possible Ships- TriniXKimberly, TriniXTommi(Female Tommy Oliver)

I’d love for this to take place after the events of the movie. The Rangers still trying to build their skill as a team, suddenly encountered by a new Green Ranger. The Green Power Coin could be messing with the new Ranger’s mind, considering it was Rita’s coin. Basically, adapting, ‘Evil with Green’ story arc from MMPR, into the movie verse. We can adapt other villains from MMPR too. And move things from there.

Power Rangers Super-Mega Force:

Big fan of the Sentai Counter-part that went into this season of Power Rangers. Personally, would like to re-write the season, to make it more like Gokaigers. That can go about many different ways, and will take a little more discussion. Though, things I will like to keep are- Past Rangers showing up to teach a lesson, the Legendary Ranger Keys, and if you want the same team of Rangers from Mega Force. Totally open to creating a new team, to be closer to Gokaigers.

Persona 5:

((Possible Ships- MakotoXAnn (my favorite) MakotoXJoker, MakotoXFem-Joker, AnnXFem-Joker))

I have a few ideas with P5.

One could be an AU, that plays into my favorite ship. Ann is still harassed by Kamoshida, and rumors are going around Shunjin. As student council President, Makoto takes pride in trying to keep the school as best as possible, and decides to look into it. They have never really spoke, and in this Ren/Akira/Joker never came to Shunjin, so the Phantom Thieves arne’t a thing yet(if we want to include them). Makoto decides she needs to get to the bottom of all this, and goes to Ann.

Another, something with Akechi. I like him a lot, until he becomes plot villain, kinda.

I’d like to write something with him, maybe being redeemed. I loved that the Anime, had him and Ren hang out more. Something with him, not totally getting crapped over. Maybe he survives his encounter with fake him, and is able to help the Thieves against Shido.

This will probably need more discussion.

2020 Year in Review

I wasn’t going to write one of these this year. I wasn’t sure what the point was, normally they’re a list of accomplishments, places I went, projects I worked on, events I planned. But I feel like I didn’t do anything this year. It was a year that felt more like college, with long days that melded together into walks and work sessions. I loved it, but it also lacked the intensity that usually pumps through the months. As I started writing this though, it was surprisingly easy to fill, even without my usual go-tos like travel filling it in.

Speaking of travel

Okay, I did hop around the east coast a bit. In January I went up to Montreal for Synchrony once again. I spent the trip up making a PICO-8 sketch of the snow falling around our train up north.

Later, in February, I went up to Pennsylvania to volunteer as a performer for a LARP for the first time. I played an animal, a cult member taking part in a sacrifice that included biting into a giant cake heart (that everyone was touching, so much for that world), and played a hellhound bringing people back to a mystery portal in the middle of a field. We camped and hiked and took day-trips to Wawa for lunch.

My last trip was to Nashville Tennessee for a library conference. I loved it, library conferences are much less vendor-focused than ed-tech ones. I got a suitcase full of free books that I’m still reading my way through. My co-worker and I stayed in cool Airbnbs and found our way to a speakeasy inside an old phone booth. I had never been to Nashville, but thought it was like a cool weird Disney land with great food and incredible music around every corner.

Afterwards I headed down to Florida to see my grandparents for a week, and then went back to New York... and didn’t go anywhere for the rest of the year. A couple weeks after I got back to my Brooklyn apartment I packed a bag and headed upstate for the next three months to play animal crossing and hang out with my parents and dog.

Coding Club

When schools shut down, a couple things happened. First, we put our school product available online for free. Second, I started a coding club for kids who were home from school. I met with kids for an hour twice a week, and really saw them grow and experiment with code. It grew to a few hundred kids each week, all meeting up to code along and share their work. I was able to get a better feel for how teachers used our product, and was able to test out project ideas live. It was such a joy, and my favorite part of my job during that time.

Livecoding in Space

I co-organized Livecoding in Space at the start of shutdown. It was a day of workshops and an evening algorave that was originally going to take place at the Kennedy Center. I made the website, ran the lineup, and managed the Twitch stream the whole day, and somehow got a p5 workshop and performance livecoding visuals to a series of poets in there at the same time. It was wild, super fun, and I’m really glad I did it.

Performances

I continued the Twitch streak performing with musicians at sPaCYcLoUd Livecode Thursdays, bringing in what I was learning at monthly shaders workshops. Working in GLSL was a completely different experience than working with Hydra, I was much more limited with a much higher chance of things going wrong. I moved more slowly, and was really able to get lost in the performances in a way I hadn’t before.

NYC

Back in New York City in the summer, everything was boarded up. Bars had tables outside, and people were in scattered groups around Astor Place. We went out one night on St. Marks and bought pre-bottled drinks from a place that had once been an impossible to get into bar. Cop cars were driving up and down the street announcing for us to stay apart on their loudspeakers. The whole thing felt very apocalyptic. We played tennis in courts without nets, with piles of leaves that no one had cleaned up since all the parks were technically still closed. I spent time walking around Manhattan and Brooklyn, more than I ever did before. I walked 13 miles to the dentist and back, walked over the Williamsburg bridge over and over again. I met up with friends to practice skateboarding, I walked up to the Williamsburg park for a picnic with friends, I walked to Bushwick for the same. I got better at electric unicycling and did yoga in different parks staring at the trees. And when I settled back into my Bed Stuy apartment John would come over every weekend and we’d cook and get work done. I’ve never been happier in my life.

Art?

I got much better at painting this year, which is something I had wanted to experiment more with for a while. I finally understand the difference between supplies and the benefits of good paper and brushes. I took part in virtual figure drawing sessions and around the world painting lessons.

I did a lot of figure drawing this year, most of it was online. My favorite, however, was at a place called Outerspace in Brooklyn. It was an hour walk from my apartment, and I loved the walk there through Bushwick and back. I went a few times, sometimes walking back in the dark past the largest church in Brooklyn, sometimes grabbing food in one of my favorite parts of the city and taking an uber after. Figure drawing online gave me the space (literally, usually I’d be too close to other people to have them out) to start experimenting with paints, something that followed my practice throughout the year.

In March, my friend who’s an elementary school art teacher started posting her prompts for her class online, which was an awesome first way to get back into traditional sketchbooking on the floor of my bedroom upstate. Above are some of the elementary-school art prompts that kept me occupied this Spring.

I also followed along with someone I had followed on Instagram, Travel Write Draw. The whole thing was definitely a bit out of my comfort zone, my sketchbooks tend to skew stranger and she comes from the fashion world, but I had always wanted to paint more and took part. The paintings above are in the order I did them, I think I got a lot better as we went through. The places are in order: Rome, Marrakesh, Capri, Cartagena, the Serengeti, and Paris at Christmastime.

Over the summer I took part in Arsiliath’s Intro to Biological Simulation with Compute Shaders. The above are some of the experiments from the class. I read math papers and implemented them for the first time.

I applied to grad school, which took up most of my free time and energy this fall. Nothing to share here yet, I’ll know what’s up around March/April. I took the GREs as well, and did surprisingly well given I haven’t taken a test in about a decade.

I’m heading out to Mars now, a remote spot in Southern California, to wait out the winter and try and make the most out of a weird quarantine world. I wonder if this should be longer or more interesting, end in bullets of things I can feel proud of from my 20′s. I don’t know. When you come back to this 2021 Leandra, I hope you’re happy and have finally found your footing in a world that feels like it’s constantly trying to drown you with the next wave.

abilities: I like to draw! my life: I was raised by and live with my Thai grandparents and older sister. I’m about to graduate highschool in a couple months! 18 in September~ Southern Californian born and raised and still am today. I have some great friends and some great cats so it’s pretty good. Been through a lot of hecking oof in my life but without those times I wouldn’t be the person I am today~

relationships: Too many friends irl and too many friends online cx Got my family, got my cats. Past relationships were pretty oof, so oof i came out of the closet lmao. Single but I’ll let life take it’s course and see what happens B) jk im married to all my 2d waifus <3

random: I look up to a bunch of people who I aspire to be like. I especially look up to all the chrobin content makers, even if they don’t notice me B’’) What I want most in life is to have fans who enjoy my content and to be content with my own artwork~ I can speak some Thai but I’m not too good at it ;v; I really like bugs and I used to want to become an entomologist. I learned how to draw so I can make webcomics for all the stories I have in my head <3 I’m also garbage at math B’)))) I make serious art but I don’t post since it isn’t fandom related. Big Hero 6 is my favorite Disney movie and kh is my favorite video game of all time. My grandparents used to work in Hollywood and were featured in, The Princess Diaries, Pinocchio live action thing that used to scare me as a kid, Rush Hour 1&2, How I Met Your Mother (commercial), Wedding Crashers and other stuff I can’t think of off the top of my head :b I got into chrobin only because I saw how beautiful Robin’s character design was in ssb4 and once I saw their final smash I looked into fea. At first I wasn’t very interested in playing fea because I couldn’t gay marry so I had my friend homebrew my ds for the gay mod (BLESS) and now here I am :D

been doing a new years resolution & reflection post every year since 2014 so im gonna continue that trend.

personally this was a really great year for me. it’s very weird. things are objectively bad. if you think too much about the future things start to fall apart. there isn’t anything to rely on, outside of my own ability, and that’s limited in what i can do without support. but. it’s not hopeless. i dream a lot of finally graduating and getting a job that will keep me more than just barely afloat, and of what that could mean for me... i won’t graduate for at least 2 year (i need 56 more credits-- i think after 2 years i’ll have 2 more classes to get in, unless i manage either some summer courses or 2 semesters of 5 classes, both of which are unlikely) and even then i know finding a job is hard. theoretically i could start now but i find it difficult to work 30 hours a week and go to school. i’m also afraid that i might make less at an entry level job than at my current job... but maybe this summer i will apply at some bookstores & libraries.

also... i really love my girlfriend. she’s coming to stay with me for 2 weeks in march and i am so excited. it’s been a good year for us. every day i talk to her and she really understands and like, gets me you know? i am amazed and i fall in love some more.

also i accomplished a ton in 2017. maybe not the things i set out to (i finished 1 sock that i started last november, lol, and the only short stories i read were a few online and for school) but i transferred to RIC. i only took 2 classes because i couldnt register till june but i got As in both of them and my gpa is a 4.0 which has never happened in my LIFE. i’m excited about the classes i’m starting this month, and after i finish spanish & anthropology i should only have english classes from then on out. i wouldn’t say i love my current job but it’s miles better than working in retail. it’s less stressful and while i’m generally working less hours i am making a little bit more. it feels necessary & helpful as opposed to being in an endless capitalism machine that only exists to grind me down for unreasonable standards.

but i did read 100 books which was real touch & go for a while.. the first couple months of 2017 i barely read & felt like i had lost my ability to plow thru a ton of books, then the middle of the year i caught up & jumped ahead... fell behind, etc. i finished my last book on the 28th though. i read a lot of comics; my page count for this year is way down, but it doesn’t matter. that’s still damn impressive.

and for things i didn’t plan at all but still accomplished: i wrote 4 pieces of fiction this year. i mean. they’re all fanfiction, which isn’t really something i even read never mind write, which i think is maybe??? sort of even more impressive? i’m going to try and write some original stuff in the coming year but like. right after nanowrimo, my friends and i, who were previously in the fictional coalition of writers who don’t write, uh, all started writing. which is great. but i mean. i started writing in february? march? i wrote a 10k word fic, and then a short follow up, a short pjo thing, and i wrote another 6000 words this month but it’s not on ao3 cause it’s like... a complementary piece to something that isn’t finished yet, lol. overall about 20k words which isn’t too much in the long run but i like that i wrote 4 completed pieces. it’s nice because i had sort of let myself give up on writing because... i mostly don’t enjoy it. i don’t like scrounging for ideas. but i do like planning things out enough, outlining what i want to happen, and then writing the whole thing. it’s like writing a list and then accomplishing it which... as u know, i love. as far as i can tell uhh most people don’t need to do this. i really have to know like. the end trajectory of a piece before i start writing. i don’t have to know every detail but if i am confused to where it’s going i can’t write it. i’m not great at ideas but i am good at making things happen. it feels nice to accomplish something creative, when i basically haven’t since i uhhh dropped out of art school.

also, i wrote 47 reviews, which, damn! i (read: my bff & roommate mags) put up a new website, even if it is going to come down this month (i think. i wanna transfer everything first) and i wrote a review nearly every week and a lot of them were good. like. that’s a lot of writing, between fiction & what have u, what category do my dumb reviews fall under.

(FOOD/DIET warning i dont wanna put it in the tags of the post just skip this paragraph) oh also i cut dairy & eggs (& also gelatin & honey, i guess) out of my diet, & i feel very very good about it (also i think i lost something like 20 lbs-- i don’t weigh myself but uhhh thats good thats very good). when i stopped eating meat in 2010 i lived with my mom & my intention was to one day go vegan but like... i didn’t want to put the strain on her & also i sometimes struggle with food things. but it’s gone really well. it’s nice. feel good. love to cook. very good at it.

so like...... a really good year for me. here’s what i want out of 2018

i’m cutting my reading goal down specifically because i don’t think it’s something that can grow exponentially and i think the main reason i was able to accomplish it was because i didn’t have too much school this year. when i started setting goals for myself in 2012 my original goal was 50 books; that’s what we’re going back to.

every year (except 2016 when i was realistic) i told myself i would read more short stories & knit more. i’m hoping that having less to read (which i prioritize over all other hobbies) will give me more time. also i have a desk & a chair set up which... idk... helps? i put some knitting stuff there & grafted the toe of a sock the other day, so i hope it does, at least. i read a short story yesterday so i hope that’s a portent for 2018. i want to finish the time travelers almanac at least. i have a lot of collections and i do enjoy them. it’s just easier to get through novels than anything else.

if u follow my twitter you have probably heard me say this but: 2018 is the year of the video game for me. im, uh, terrible at games- im fairly certain i have dyspraxia, at least mildly (im wildly, wildly uncoordinated)- but for a while i was playing a few because i had done it enough that i had gotten better..... well, this year i played persona 5, which i really loved like. more than any video game in a long time. i know a lot of people were disappointed with aspects of it (rightly so) but i had never played another persona game so i think that probably shaped my opinion some, and also, i think p5 dealt with issues that i really love to see in fiction & generally don’t, even if it ultimately dropped the ball. anyway. it kind of revitalized my interest, and i want to play more. i have p4 that i want to get through. i never finished usum. i have a bunch of games on steam & mags let me sign into their steam library too & they have about 400 games (thats not an exaggeration). i wanna replay me2&3 for sid. i want to practice so i can play games that are more difficult than i usually do. (mass effect being the sole fps i can play, usually i can only play very linear rpgs (think pokemon & dragon age) and uhhh puzzle games, god i love puzzle games)

so, more concretely:

read 50 books

try to read more short stories

knit more

play video games

do well in school

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the JavaScript

Around this time last year, I wrote an article about the JavaScript learning landscape. Within that article, you’ll find my grand plans to learn JavaScript — complete with a link to a CodePen Collection I started for tracking my progress, and it even got dozens of comments cheering me on.

Like most people, I was ambitious. It was a new year and I was excited to tackle a long-standing project. It was my development version of losing 30 pounds (which I also need to do). But, if you follow that link to the CodePen Collection, you’ll see that there’s nothing there. If you were to scour my hard drive or cloud storage, you’d see that there aren’t any JavaScript files or projects there, either.

Over the past year, I didn’t make any progress on one of my main goals. So, what the hell happened?

A Story as Old as Time

The internet is littered with similar tweets and blog posts. Inboxes are filled with TinyLetters of resolutions and there's no shortage of YouTubers teaching anyone who will listen how to have their best year ever. But very few people follow through on their goals. This might be even more true in the design and development world, what with the plethora of new technologies, languages, libraries, and tools that hit the scene on a regular basis.

These stories all follow a similar path:

Person determines major goal

Person tells friends (or who knows how many CSS-Tricks visitors)

Person gets distracted, overwhelmed, disinterested, or all three

Goal is completely forgotten about after X amount of time

Person apologizes and makes up excuses for friends (or, again, who know how many CSS-Tricks visitors)

In my experience, it's not the goal-setting or telling everyone about said goal that's the problem. It's step three above. When goals go off the rails, at least for me, it's due to three main issues: distraction, stress, and lack of interest. Barring unforeseen life events, these three issues are responsible for all those unachieved goals that we struggle with.

In thinking about my goals for this year, I decided to start first with deconstructing why I couldn’t reach the one major goal I set for myself last year. So, let’s dig into those three issues and see if there’s a way to prevent any of them happening this time around.

Distraction

Distraction seems to be the big one here. We all have a lot going on. Between job and family responsibilities, other hobbies and hanging out with friends, it’s hard to fit in new projects. As necessary as they are, all those other interests and responsibilities are distractions when it comes to our goals.

The whole point of setting a goal is carving out time to work towards it. It’s about prioritizing the goal over other things. For me, I found myself letting all of those other distractions in life work their way into my day. It was all too easy to work through lunch instead of taking that time to tackle a chapter in a JavaScript book. I would get sucked into the latest Netflix series after the kids went to bed. I didn’t prioritize learning JavaScript and I had nothing to show for it at the end of the year.

Overcoming Distraction

The key here is to block out those distractions, which is easier said than done. We can’t simply ignore the needs of our families and careers, but we need to give ourselves time to focus without distractions. For me, I’m increasingly convinced that the solution is time blocking.

Time blocking is exactly what it sounds like: You block out specific periods of time on your calendar to focus on certain tasks. Time blocking allows you to prioritize what’s important. It doesn’t force you to sit down, crack open a book, or start coding, but it gives you the time to do it. There are a ton of articles online that go into different time blocking methods, a few of which are below:

The Hyper-Scheduling Experiment

For me, I’m going to block out specific times throughout the week to focus on learning JavaScript in 2019. I’m trying to be realistic about how much time I can invest, weighing it against other obligations. Then I’m putting those time blocks on my shared family calendar to make it clear to everyone what I’m prioritizing. More importantly, I’m making it clear that this time is for focus, and to leave the other distractions at the door.

It can also be helpful to block smaller, but just as impactful, distractions on your phone and computer. Closing out browser tabs not related to your task, silencing notifications, and clearing your desk of otherwise distracting items should be part of the routine when you sit down to start working on your task. It’s easy to scroll through Twitter, Hacker News, or even CSS-Tricks and convince yourself that it’s time well spent (that last one usually is, though) but that time adds up and doesn’t always result in learning or growing your skills like you think it will. Cutting out those distractions and allowing yourself to focus on what you want to accomplish is a great way to, you know, actually accomplish your goals.

Stress

Last year’s post lays out a landscape full of interesting articles, books, podcasts, and courses. There is no lack of things to learn about and enough resources to keep anyone busy for way longer than just a year. And, when it comes to JavaScript, it seems like there’s always some new technique or framework that you need to learn.

Combine that with all of the ancillary topics you need to understand when learning JavaScript and you end up with one of those overwhelming developer roadmaps that Chris collected a while back.

I don’t care how smart you are, that’s intimidating as hell. Feeling overwhelmed on the web is common place. How do you think it feels as someone just starting out? Combined with all the responsibilities and distractions from the last section, and you have a killer recipe for burnout.

I had originally intended to work my way through Marijn Haverbeke’s Eloquent JavaScript as a first step towards learning the language. But I also mentioned all the podcasts, YouTube channels, and newsletters with which I was surrounding myself. The intention was to learn through immersion, but it quickly resulted in feeling stressed and overwhelmed. And when I felt overwhelmed, I quickly allowed all those distractions to pull my attention away from learning JavaScript.

Overcoming Stress

Just like when dealing with distraction, I think the key to dealing with stress is to focus on one or two things and cut out all the rest. Instead of fully immersing myself in the JavaScript world, I’m going to stick to just the book, work my way through that, and then find the next resource later down the road. I’m going to intentionally ignore as much of the JavaScript world as I can in order to get my bearings and only open myself up to the stress of the developer roadmap if, and when, I feel like I want to journey down that path.

Disinterest

Flipping through any programming book (at least for a beginner) causes most people’s eyes to glaze over. The code looks overly complex and it resembles a math textbook. I don’t know about you, but I hated math class and I found it hard to get excited about investing my free time in something that felt a lot like going back to high school.

But I know that learning JavaScript (and programming, in general) is a worthwhile pursuit and will let me tackle projects that I’ve long wanted to complete but haven’t had the chops to do. So, how can I get interested in what, at first glance, looks like such a boring task?

Overcoming Disinterest

I think the key here is to relate what I learn to some subject that I find fascinating.

I’ve been interested in data visualization for a long time. Blogs like Flowing Data are fascinating, and I’ve wanted to be able to create data visualizations of my own for years. And I know that JavaScript is increasingly a viable way to create those graphics. Tools like D3.js and p5.js are first-class frameworks for creating amazing visualizations — so why not learn the underlying language those tools use?

My plan to overcome disinterest is to work my way towards a project that I want to build. Go through all the basics, trudge through the muck, and then use the concepts learned along the way to understand more advanced tools, like D3.js.

Anytime you can align your learning to areas you find interesting, you’re more likely to be successful. I think that��s what was missing the first time around, so I’m setting up targets to aim for when learning JavaScript, things that will keep me interested enough to learn what I need to learn.

It’s a Hard Road

Learning is rarely easy. But, sometimes, it’s when it’s the hardest that it pays off the most.

I’m convinced that the more we can uncover our own mental roadblocks and deconstruct them, the better positioned we are to achieve our goals. For me, my mental roadblocks are distraction, stress, and disinterest. The three work together to keep me from my goals, but I’m putting plans into motion to overcome all three. Your roadblocks may differ, but you probably have ways of dealing with them, too.

XD Beware, it’s gonnaget a bit negative and there will be endgame spoilers so yeah. 8U (alluding to this post btw) (note: I rewrote this and the endgame spoilers are only in the Goro section, the rest are about beginning tomidgame spoilers and I tried to keep the vague)

(also you don’t have to agree with me, and I’m not being negative just to be negative, someone asked my opinion and I’m just being truthful. So please don’t send hate)

Ok so like…..it’s not that I hate thesecharacters (hopefully I won’t, but I can’t fully say till the english version),but…..I actually just don’t care about them…. I’m very, VERY apathetic tothem. But I should note that out of all my least favs Yusuke and Futabalook like they could possibly go up when the english version is released (stillwill be ranked under Haru but better than where they are now). I feel like someof these might be because of the fandom or because I really am not happy withhow the game is paced/how it flows….. Also it took so long cause I had torewrite Makoto’s and Goro’s cause it go too heated and negative (probably cause I’ve been bottling this up for months) sooooolkdasnfafnlak;ndfk;a I’mm keep it short and simple

Yusuke: I dunno…..maybe itwas when he was first announced people compared him to Jun. I dunno if it’scause I don’t like Jun or that I don’t like how it felt like they weren’tletting him stand by himself as his own character…. So maybe it’s that Idon’t like his design? (I really do think they should’ve went with thebrowner-haired and long haired version we see in his concept art.) Maybe it’scause I didn’t trust him? Judging by the concept art (when it was more roughsof him) he seemed a bit shady…..maybe he was originally going to be thetraitor? Maybe it’s just that I don’t like how the fandom views him… Maybeit’s all these things…I can admit I didn’t like him when he was firstannounced. When I got the game tho? I did like his arc, not as much as thefirst arc (no really that arc really leaves an impression) but it was a goodfollow up and is like maybe my 2nd fav in the game (and cause of hisarc I feel like I do have the potential to like him more). And then…I dunnowhat happened…it’s like he dropped off the face of the earth! When they weretalking in-game during the plot related things after the 2nd dungeonI would catch myself thinking “Oh yeah he exists! I forgot!” I legitforgot this kid existed. I don’t really recall him doing anything worthwhileeither (maybe what he contributed in the discussions was big? I dunno, it feltlike everyone else was talking a lot and contributing and not him as much? thisis something that the english ver will clear up for me tho so my opinion willprobably change, this isn’t a reason why I don’t like him…I just….didn’tnotice). I know what you’re thinking “Well what about his CoOp? How couldyou forget he existed if he had a CoOp!” Well……I… didn’t…..do it….. 8UCause he wasn’t a character I cared about still, and I was focusing on eithermy stats or CoOps that I deemed more important (like best in-game benefits andwho I actually liked) or could do. So yeah…..Though, all this being said, Ireally do like his interactions with Futaba tho, maybe it’s cause he’s probablythe closest in age to her,or maybe it’s cause they’re both odd. I kinda ship them. 8U He’s really theonly one I do ship her with. >.> This is a good segue into…

Futaba: I dunno, she alsorubbed me the wrong way when she was first announced (actually her and Haru andMakoto all did….). I dunno she was very “waifu bait-y” when I first sawher. And…..now…..she still kinda does, but more on the “littlesister-siscon kinda bait.” She really does feel like a little sister toeveryone except Yusuke and Makoto (Makoto is more like her mom tbh). And so herromance really……feels almost like I’m romancing Nanako tbh, and the factyou can view how she falls for you asa way of “tricking her” (not my words, just repeating what I heard someoneelse say), so that doesn’t really sit right with me either….And the fact thatshe’s been listening in on you for months…..is……yeah…… I think weshould’ve had a CoOp with her at thestart of the game that was similar to the Hermit in P3 (it hits a roadblock atsome point of course and opens up again after plot stuff happens), we insteadare her online friend and she gets close to use that way. Maybe she does hackto find out location but she doesn’t….you know….bug our place. I dunno someof the things just doesn’t sit right with me. But her backstory does seeminteresting, so that might have me like her in the englishversion….. “So did you do her CoOp?” Didn’t do anything past rank 1 tbh(ok maybe rank 2 or 3, I had some free time before the game ended)…. Statusreasons was the main reason, but again….like Yusuke….didn’t really care(tho I got farther in Yusuke’s CoOp I think).

Makoto: Let’s be honest, shedoesn’t even need to be here. She’s only here cause of her sister Sae, and tbhI’d rather have Sae be on the team. We know the MC was originally going to livewith or next to Sae in the early versions, I bet Makoto wasn’t even conceived backthen. It’s only when they moved the MC they decided that Makoto might beneeded, and even then they could’ve gotten around her and still go stuff done.Nothing Makoto does is that important that another character could’ve done. “Butshe found Haru! That’s what the wiki says” (might have changed) No…..She didn’t,Anne found Haru in the book. Makoto just accompanied the MC to confront Haru….whichyou didn’t really need anyone could’ve done that. “Oh but she’s the strategist ofthe group!” So? Tbh why is she the strategist?What gives her the authority to be that? Cause she’s smart? Guess who else issmart? Hifumi. And guess what, she’s more of a strategist than Makoto. The gameshe’s a pro at is more is grounded in strategy. And guess what, she wasoriginally going to be on the team too. It would’ve made more sense to haveHifumi on the team than Makoto.

Tldr; She’s unnecessary/doesn’tneed to be there, her role could be removed completely or just filled by anyoneelse.

Goro: Sigh…..short andsweet….short and sweet. I don’t care about him and his struggles. 1) we don’t see it, it’s only alluded too (P5’sshow don’t just tell thing was so strong with the first two dungeons and Futaba’swas decent too, and Haru’s problems with her fiancé was shown and you felt forher too despite her being thrown in last second). They already did this withSho and Adachi (Adachi was kinda lost in translation, and Sho was just not toldtoo well but still they’re retreading). Like I have to rely on what I saw withthe other kids to feel for Goro instead of Goro himself. And speaking of that2) he has more in common with other characters than the MC (like Yusuke, and/orAnne/Ryuji)…..which really sucks considering he’s supposed to be the duality tothe MC (like Adachi-MC, Sho to Adachi/MC, Ryoji to MC, Takaya to MC ect), yesit’s not uncommon for other teammates to have duality with the antagonist(Adachi-Yosuke/Naoto, heck the Adachi-Yosuke really parallels Goro-Yusuke)….but…..whatabout MC-Goro????? They really don’t have much in compare and contrast going onimo. 3) He doesn’t even feel like one who fulfills a detective role in aPhantom Thief thing (ex Batman to Catwoman, Carmalita Fox to Sly Cooper, ToshioUtsumi to Hitomi and her sisters, Ganimard/Zenigata toLupin/Lupin the 3rd, etc you get the point), if anything Sae is the one who fulfillsthat role more (bonus points she’s pretty much Naoto in this game, who alsofulfills this role). 4) I never felt like the team felt connected to him….likethey knew he was a snitch and they never really treated him well imo, so himbeing like “I’ll help you out and sacrifice myself” doesn’t really make a wholelot of sense. I mean if he had been on your team longer that would’ve made alittle more sense, but they didn’t like him before or after joining the teamtbh…. So why should I feel connected when the rest of the team doesn’t reallyeither (heck the fact you can be so freaking mean to him as the MC AND STILLrank up really doesn’t make sense). :/

Tldr; He’s not reallywell written compared to everyone else (as well as other past antagonists), and he doesn’t make sense.

Video Game, and Fandom Search

Hello! With the summer coming to an end, I need some new partners to Write with! But,here is a quick run-down. Name/Alias: Bocaj Age: 22 Time-Zone: EST Fandom Characters or OC's: This is Tricky.Some I like OC's, some I don't. So with any Fandom, I will make a note, of which. Reply Length : Typically, a paragraph or two. Open to write more. Reply Time: I try to get at least one reply per day, will always attempt more. But, real life always comes first. POV: Third Person, Past Tense. Medium: Email or Discord. Email:[email protected]! So, if you are still reading, lovely~! Time, to list through what I am into currently, and any thoughts for plots and such. I always, always love a sense of story added in. In general, adventure themes, action, romance, Time-Whimey, War, and others, are themes I lean towards. Of course, for each Fandom here, not all apply to such. Fandoms Start here: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Ahh, JoJo's.. Started it last year, because a co-worker had mentioned it was something to really enjoy, and at first I was a bit iffy. Though, now I am obsessed. I won't try to say I am the best fan around, but I do love the series from what I have read and seen. So, for this Fandom, I am open to both :Canon and OC Characters. Just not mixed together. If we want Canon, let's stick with them. Or, OC's, let's go that route only. I think, because the Multiverse Does Exist within Jojo's, creating our own Timeline within can be fun! Our own JoJo, and Jobro team! Perhaps have it set during a War, and see how Stands could turn the Whims of Fate. Or, a more modern setting, with Stands. Some Canon Characters I adore are: Caesar, Joseph (Both Young and Old) Jolyne, Josuke, Giorno, Bruno, Diavolo, DIO, Any Zeppeli if I am being honest, Lisa Lisa, SpeedWagon, (Not finished SBR) But I do like Johnny too! Others of course, too! Tales of Berseria: Probably my favorite Tales game, that I have personally played. For this, Canon Characters only. Though, very open to AU ideas for this game. Perhaps, some school AU? Like their School DLC costumes. Or, take a Bizarre Route and give them all Stands and a JoJo like problem/World to deal with. Not too many ideas for this game yet. Persona 5,

my first Persona game. So, I am a little bias when it comes to this series. I have a understanding of Persona 4, though I do not have any real want to go back and play that title.(Nothing against those who love P4. I hear all the time, its better. And perhaps it is, I am not denying that.) I love the Phantom Thieves and their story, and can not wait for Persona 5 Royal! When it comes to P5, I prefer to stick to Canon Characters. Open to add our own little head-canon thoughts to them. Also, a great topic of Debate: Ren or Akira. I like Ren, because I am a Star Wars geek, and Ren makes me think of Kylo Ren ; however, either work for me. I was first introduced to the Akira name, from one of the manga series. But, again, I am not too stuck on it. If I had a choice, Ren, but Akira is just as good. (Kinda pairs him up with Akechi a little more, when its Akira, I feel.) When it comes to ideas, I am quite open as well! One thought I have had, and it needs some work, is Crossing Persona 5 over, with Kingdom Hearts. Both Deal with Hearts, right? It could be as simple, as Persona 5 is a world within the Realm of Kingdom Hearts. But, the idea of having the Phantom Thieves, or at least one or two, work with Sora is such a fun thought! Open to do something based around the Dancing Costumes; I know in the Dancing game, its explained they are in the Meta-verse, for the entertainment of the Wardens, and their siblings. Though, I wouldn't mind creating some new Palace they deal with, where Dancing is an really odd and big factor in it. If we want something with Shipping, my favorite ship is: AnnXMakoto. Or, any AU spin. Phantom Thieves, in the world of Pokemon? Sure! Why Not>! Kingdom Hearts! Fill me, with the power of...Darkness! Another series I have loved for a long time. What's your favorite Trio?! Were you satisfied with KHIII? My trio, is Sea-Salt. As I loved 358/2 Days (Read as: Three, Five, Eight, Days Over Two....for some reason....)) and as for KHIII, I was! I know some weren't, but it delivered on everything I needed to feel, the feels. Canon Characters, please. But, again, any head-canon thoughts, feel free to share them! For this Fandom, we can dive in anywhere. Want to explore a certain game more, with our own twists? Let's! Wanna do an AU, with our favorite characters? An AU Inspired by Final Fantasy X-2, starring Aqua, Kairi, Nanime, And Xion? I'd love ya! Re-write some Canon events, and create a new KH time-line? I love timey-whimey problems! Favorite over-all KH character? Xion, for me. Something about the quiet girl has always appealed to me. Though, Luxord, despite what short amount of time we see him, is another favorite.

Akira Toriyama's World, of Dragon Ball I have specific ideas for this one. 1) Deals within an AU, with Gohan and Videl, more focusing on their jobs as Saiyaman and Saiyman-2./Woman. The Buu Saga, wouldn't have occurred the way it did. Instead, allowing Gohan time to be more of a hero. Though, new foes would appear. Perhaps, the non-canon movie villains, like Bojack, Cooler, and others. Android 21, if we want to slide her into the mix too. Canon and OC's. But, Canon are the main focus. 2) Within Universe 6, I'd like to adapt the Tuffle Arc from GT, but with the Universe 6 Saiyans! Cabba, Kale, and Caulifla having to fight off the Tuffle infection! I'd like to include the Twin Tuffles from Heroes, but open to OC Tuffles being the main Antagonist. Despite what anyone might think of Disney's control of the Franchise, I am still quite in love with it. I do have high hopes for Episode IX. Though, I don't want to focus any RP in the new era. Instead, I'd like to go more in some AU route (A running theme in this post, I know..) But, The Force Unleashed in DLC, had plots of this nature. With Luke falling on Hoth, due to Starkiller, and Leia taking up the 'Last' Jedi role. And, if one does a search for scrapped Concept Art for Battlefront-4, they had all sorts of AU thoughts: Darth Obi-wan, Jedi-Maul, Sith Luke and Leia, Light-Side Vader, and so much more! I think, diving into some AU could be fun! An AU where Luke and Leia, serve the Empire, and its up to an Old Light Side Anakin to redeem his kids? Instead of Qui-Gon being killed on Naboo, perhaps it was Obi-wan; allowing Qui-Gon to become Anakin's Master, but with the scar of losing his Padwan. Or, perhaps a tale on Anakin and Obi-Wan, during Anakin's training. I finished reading Master and Apprentice , which is a canon book about Obi-wan and Qui-Gon, and loved it. Or, another idea, dealing within EA's Battlefront II and Inferno Squad. I'd like a story with them, actual being the Elite Squad for the Empire, and not becoming Rebels. Might be odd to write from the Empire's POV. But, I wish they had gone another way with those characters. It is was so underwhelming to see Iden just randomly have a change of heart. Without seeing the Bad-ass Special Force Commander.

Though, I do not have as many ideas/thoughts for these, here are some others. ! Sword Art Online/Gun Gale Online My Hero Academia Super Sentai/Power Rangers Power Rangers 2017 Movie-Verse Pokemon The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Catherine/Katherine Thanks for reading!
