It was my first time performing The Ceremony of the Fangs, so they turned out a little crooked, but I think they still look very nice. I painted one of them gold to match her nose and the gold flecks in her fur. Thank you for the tutorial, Auntie! @gothiccharmschool

It had been a hard, long week at Seattle Grace Hospital. You had spent most of it in the clinic, which wasn’t very exciting, but it had put you on Bailey’s good side, which was always a good thing.
George, on the other hand, had been given a chance to scrub in on an incredible surgery and the patient, unfortunately, hadn’t made it. It had upset him, losing someone so young, and he had been sulking around the halls the past few days.
“Why don’t we do something fun tonight?” you suggested, sensing that his mood wasn’t going to get better without a gentle nudge. Like all the other surgery interns, the job often took a toll on him, and only another intern was capable of understanding their pain.
“Like what?” he asked, not looking up from the chart he was reading.
“I don’t know…Go to the bar with the other interns?“ you suggested.
George looked up at you with a fond look on his face. “You mean, like we do all the time?”
“I’m just brainstorming!” you defended, but you couldn’t help smiling.
You and George had immediately gotten along at the beginning of your internship, and had been inseparable friends ever since. All it took was a certain expression on his face, or a specific tone of voice for you to know exactly what he was thinking. You were smiling, because you knew that fond look on his face meant, ‘I know you’re trying to cheer me up, and going to a bar with Karev is not the right approach.’
So, you tried again. “Or we could go back to the house, watch a movie, have some drinks and snacks? I think Meredith is on call tonight, anyway, so the house will be quieter than usual.”
He notated something on the chart, giving you a nod. “Sure, that sounds nice. Uh, I have to go run some labs, but I’ll see you at lunch?”
“See you!”
It was a few hours later when George put his tray down next to yours on the cafeteria table, flopping down into his seat with a sigh.
“Drinks tonight is just what I need,” he said.
You gave him a sympathetic smile, patting his arm. “I’ll stop by the liquor store after my shift.”
“You’re the best,” George said, and his tone was so sincere, combined with that fond look in his big, brown eyes, it made your face flush.
The moment was ruined when Meredith came to the table, practically slamming her food down as she began to rant about her drama with McDreamy, and you were grateful for the distraction.
George was your best friend. Surely you weren’t interested in him…like that. George O’Malley, who was shy and awkward, who was into all his nerdy shit, who made you laugh more than anyone else, who knew you better than anyone…
Well, shit. That wasn’t a great revelation to have in the middle of your work day. You were falling for your best friend.
Meredith’s voice faded to the background as you processed it. Relationships within the hospital always seemed to get messy. You were co-workers, roommates, friends. If it went wrong, it would ruin so much. But if it went well...God, if it went well, it would be so perfect.
"Earth to Y/N?" George said, his fingers waving in front of your face.
You startled from your thoughts. "What?"
"Your pager is going off. Didn't you hear it?"
"Shit," you muttered, grabbing for your pager as you rose to your feet, already preparing to sprint.
"See you later!" George called after you as you ran from the cafeteria.
Later that evening, you changed out of your scrubs in the locker room before heading out of the hospital, stopping at the liquor store and picking up a few bottles of assorted drinks, making sure to grab George's favorite, as well as stopping at a gas station for snacks.
By the time you made it back to the house, your arms full of bags, George was there to help you bring the bags inside.
You picked a film while George mixed some drinks, curling up beside each other on the couch.
"Cheers to surviving another week," he said.
You smiled and clinked your glass with his.
The film you chose was supposed to be sci-fi, but there was an unnecessary romance plot thrown in, and the drunker you got, the more frustrated you became.
"If the world was fucking ending, I would be less concerned with getting laid," you quipped, rolling your eyes at the television.
George was also pretty tipsy by that point, and he laughed. "I think it's sweet. I mean, he's clearly been in love with her for a while. If you thought you weren't going to live much longer, wouldn't you want to seize the opportunity?"
You hummed, considering it. “But what if the world doesn’t end? And now you’ve just made things awkward.”
“Or you’ve made things better,” George said. He had a giddy smile on his face, like he was genuinely daydreaming about the concept.
“You thinking about someone specific?” you teased, nudging him in the ribs playfully.
“Shut up,” he replied, his cheeks flushed, not just due to the alcohol.
You broke into a grin, his lie obvious. "Oh, you are! Tell me, tell me," you chanted, words slurred slightly as you nudged him repeatedly, even sneaking your hands out to tickle his side.
He yelped, batting uselessly at your hands. "No! There's nothing to tell!" he insisted, but his giggling didn't make the words sound very convincing.
Somehow, you ended up halfway in his lap, still poking and prodding at him and demanding to know his little secret, too tipsy to care about the close proximity, or about the fact that his answer might not be who you wanted it to be.
Thankfully, his answer was just what you wanted, and it didn't even come verbally. In a last ditch effort to get you to stop assailing him, George had grabbed your face and pulled you in for a clumsy kiss.
The movie wasn't even half-finished, but it was totally forgotten as you and George got to your feet, stumbling through the house and towards his bedroom, each moment where your lips weren't pressed together spent giggling.
There were no words necessary, your mouths too occupied with kissing to bother. George had already grown hard in his pajama pants, the imprint of his well-sized cock clearly visible through the plaid fabric.
You laid down on his bed, fingers fumbling to remove your top, and George pulled his own shirt over his head with a big of a struggle, the heat of the moment combined with the liquor making every movement desperate and uncoordinated.
It wasn't long until you both completely naked, tangled in his bed sheets. He held your face with so much care, thumb stroking your jaw as he kissed you.
"Youhave no idea how long I've wanted this," he breathed, lining his cock up with your entrance. "Since the ice breaker before our internship, I swear..."
"Me too," you replied. "Didn't even realize how bad I needed you, but it's always been there."
You two both moaned as he entered you, your fingernails digging into his back. It felt so good, the stretch of his cock filling you. It was a blessing that no one else was home to hear the way the bed creaked, the way you gasped and how he groaned.
As he fucked you, George used his thumb to rub circles on your clit, bringing you close to orgasm as he approached his own.
"Fuck," you breathed. "I'm gonna—"
"Me too," he said.
It didn't long for you to both be finished, laying spent on his flannel bedsheets. From the alcohol and the rush of adrenaline, you both fell asleep like that, naked and cuddled together.
***
When you awoke the next morning, you immediately felt the headache before your eyes had even opened. Weren't you too old, too mature to be getting hungover like this? And you were on-call today, which was just the cherry on top.
Or, so you thought. The real cherry on top was when you opened your eyes and say none other than your best friend, George O'Malley, laying next to you.
Fuck, you thought. Fuck, fuck, fuck!
You jumped out of the bed, and your head pounded in protest. You ignored it, too occupied with the fact that you were naked, your clothes strewn about George's bedroom floor. You gathered them up hastily and snuck out of his room, dashing into your own.
You took a few deep breaths, trying to calm down. Maybe George wouldn't remember! Maybe you could just move on, pretending that it had never happened.
It was wishful thinking, though. Once you had showered, gotten ready for work, and eaten some semblance of breakfast, George emerged from his bedroom, still shirtless, and nearly bumped right into you in the hallway.
"Morning," he said, sounding exhausted. "What the hell did we drink last night?"
"Don't remember," you replied. "I gotta go. See you later!"
You weren't being very subtle. Izzie, Meredith, and Cristina kept questioning why you were acting jumpy, flustered, and hungover.
"Did you go on a date?" Izzie asked.
Meredith chimed in. "Was it someone here?"
"Oh, don't tell me you're screwing an attending, too," Cristina said.
"I just didn't get much sleep," you replied.
Thankfully, your pager beeped and gave you an excuse to leave. You went to the room you were summoned to, expecting to find a patient in need or an attending who wanted you to scrub in.
Instead, you found an empty room with none other than George O'Malley standing in it.
"Hey," he said.
"Hi," you replied, fighting the urge to run right back out of the room.
"So, when I was getting dressed this morning, I noticed the, um...Well, the scratches on my back. I just want to make sure...It was you, right? Like, I didn't do something totally stupid?"
"It was me," you said. "And who says it wasn't stupid? We...We're friends, George, we shouldn't...I mean, I don't want to lose that."
George's face fell slightly, and you focused your gaze on the floor to ignore it.
"Of course," he replied. "Yeah, no, you're right. We were drunk, anyway. It didn't...It didn't have to mean anything."
"Cool. Well, uh...I'll see you later."
You rushed out of the room, refusing to look back at him.
(there will be a part two, don't worry!!)

It’s just a little scrape | Joe Burrow
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: After a win against the Bills, everything is going good until a drunk fan finds his way into a place he isn’t supposed to be
Pairing: Joe burrow x first person fem reader
Words: 3962
Notes: this is different than the other fics I’ve written, but I hope you enjoy!! <3
A week later was the primetime home game against the Buffalo Bills. During the day, I had a quick photo shoot with a new clothing line here in Cincinnati, but I made sure to clear out my entire schedule for the rest of the day after that. Since it was a home game, which I was so incredibly excited about, Katie, my best friend, was coming to the game. Unlike me, she wasn’t with anyone on the team, but she loved going just as much as me. Like always, we were going to stay in Joes suite where his parents were also going to be. For the whole day, excitement ran through me. Not only did I have 100% confidence in Joe, but I had 100% confidence in the entire team, and today felt like a good day for the whole entire team. When it was finally time for Joe to leave, I sent him out of the door while admiring his all green outfit, which was my all time favorite color.
Currently, I was laying out my outfit onto our bed which consisted of a white sweater dress, a long brown trench coat, and a pair of almost knee high white boots. After I laid my outfit out, I grabbed my cute little clear purse with number 9 and Burrow on it which already held my must haves for game day, and then slipped into the bathroom. In the bathroom, I curled my hair and then put on some gold hoops. Once I was done with that, I put on my makeup and then walked out of the bathroom and to the bed where I got changed. While I changed, I got a text from Katie saying that she was on her way. I texted her back with, "I'm so excited, hurry!😆" The last game was in San Francisco and Katie and I just watched it over her house, plus before that was the bye week and we haven't gone to a game together since the Seattle game. Saying we were excited was an understatement.
We arrived at the stadium 2 hours early so we could settle in before the hundreds of people filed into the stadium. Like most home games, Katie drove me so I could drive back home with Joe when the game was over. Since we weren't in the stands where I could talk to Joe before the game, we both got settled into our seats. "I'm so excited to watch the game. Work has been stressful." Katie said while stuffing her mouth full of the chicken fingers we both got before we came up to the suite. "I know, it’s been way too long since we've watched a game together. How are the extra shifts going by the way?" I asked Katie. "Well," Katie said with a mouth full of food before she held up a finger so she could swallow the food in her mouth.
We both started laughing as she swallowed and then continued. "I'm making more money than I ever have, especially with the promotion, but I feel like I'm always on the go. I'm either at work, at the grocery store, the gym, the coffee shop, or in bed. I feel like you because I never see Jamie." Katie said. "Shit, Katie, why do you still work at the coffee shop? I even quit because I wasn't seeing Joe enough, and I don't have real job." I told Katie. "Yeah, well, you quit and you still don't see him." She said with a little scoff. Leaning towards her more, I said, "well that's because my husbands in the fucking NFL, obviously I'm not going to see him that much." I said. Katie gave me a little shrug of approval and then we laughed a little bit. "All I'm saying, is that you have the opportunities to see Jamie, you just have to take them. So, quit working at the coffee shop, pay the extra 10 dollars to have the store drop your groceries off for you, and see your damn boyfriend. If you need extra money, I'll pick up more photo shoots and give you the money." I said.
Katie sighed a little bit and then looked off into the direction of the field. "You know what, you're right, You should give me money." Katie joked. Elbowing her softly, I took a bite of my chicken and then watched as the boys went into the tunnel to get on their uniforms. "All jokes aside, you're right." Katie said. "Well obviously." I laughed with her.
The Bengals won the game 24-18. Katie and I cheered so much that by the end of the third quarter, we were already starting to get scratchy and sore throats. Although the bengals won the game, they gave us a big scare by letting the game get as close as it did. By the end of the game, my nerves were so high that Katie had to force me to unclench my fists and calm down a little. When it finally did end, we stood up and started to chant. "Who Dey! Who Dey! Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals! Who Dey! Who Dey! Who Dey think gonna beat them bengals! Nobody!" I changed along with the whole stadium, which included Robin and Jimmy who were just as excited. "Let's fucking go!" Katie yelled. "That's how it's done!" I yelled with Katie as we stood up and celebrated the win over the Bills in the primetime game.
Once we settled down and the stadium started to clear out, I hugged a yawning Katie goodbye and then after a little bit, walked with Robin and Jimmy to the tunnel where I would meet up with Joe. Since it was already really late and they had a little drive back to Athens, they decided to just text Joe and congratulate him on the win. The three of us stopped just before the tunnel entrance and we hugged. "I'm so happy that you don't have to go home with another grumpy Joe. There's been too many losses this season." Robin said as we pulled away from our hug. "You and me both. I love him, but he sure can have an attitude." I laughed and then hugged Jimmy. "By the way, Joe wanted to remind you once again not to call him right after the game and give him a play by play of everything. I tried to tell him that you already know, but you know how he can be." I told Jimmy who shook his head with a sigh.
"That boy will be the death of me." Jimmy said with a shake of his head and a little chuckle. "You and me both." Robin said. We said our goodbyes and then I walked into the tunnel entrance by showing them my pass and then headed to the family area where the players could see their families. While I walked over there, I got a text from Joe saying that the press conference took a little longer so he just got into the shower and to just wait for him by the locker room. So, rather than going to the family section where I could just wait for Joe, I went to the locker room entrance and leaned against the wall while waiting to see Joe. I couldn't wait to see a happy Joe after a much needed win and wrap my arms around him.
While I waited, I went on my phone and scrolled through Instagram where new pictures of Joe from the game started to appear. Even seeing Joe through the screen made my cheeks flush a deep shade of red and I couldn't stop the corners of my mouth from turning up into a smile. My eyes were so focused on the pictures of him that I didn't even notice the locker room door opened up. "What are you smiling at?" I heard Joe say in front of me. Quickly taking my eyes off of my phone, I slipped the phone into my pocket and walked over to Joe. Both of us had huge smiles on our faces as we walked towards each other. When we met in the middle, I wrapped my arms around Joes back and he wrapped his around my neck, holding me closely. "It may or may not have been a picture of you walking out with Sam to do the coin flip." I said, leaning my head back to look into Joes eyes.
Joe raised an eyebrow and said, "oh yeah?" He then leaned forwards to capture my lips with his. The both of us breathed in the kiss before he pulled away, not wanting anyone to take a picture of our kiss. "Believe it or not, you in a uniform really does something to me." I laughed. Joe just laughed and then looked into my eyes deeply. "Well it's a good thing that we get to go home in a little bit." He said with that pantie dropping smile he loves to give me. Right after he said this, my face flushed red. With a little groan, I placed my forehead on joes chest, trying to hide my obvious flustered state. "If I could, I would slip into the nearest supply closet with you." I said. With a small sigh, Joe straightened more, obviously getting turned on. Before Joe could say anything else that would solidify my decision of going into a closet with him for a little quicky, the locker room door opened again.
Lifting my head from Joes chest, we both looked over to the door and watched Ja'marr and Sam walk out of it in mid conversation. Right when Ja'marr looked at Joe and then me, he ended his sentence and then walked over to Joe, reading his facial expression, and patted him on the back. "Y'know, the locker rooms empty, you might be able to slip in there for a few minutes. What's your record, like 3 minutes?" Ja'marr said, but quickly walked away from Joe before he could hit him in the arm. "Fuck you." Joe joked with a stern look on his face and looked over at Sam who just put his hands up to show that he wasn't going to make any crude remarks or add onto what Ja'marr said. The both of us released our arms from one another, but Joe kept one arm around my waist, pulling me close to his side and we exchanged quick I love you's as we walked.
The four of us walked together to the family section where the boys could get some food and Sam could meet up with Jessica. "Y'know, she blocked me on Instagram in college because she saw that I was following you. She thought I was her competition." I said to Sam while we talked about Jessica and where she was during the game since I couldn't see her and neither could Morgan, Holly, or Tianna. "I know, she told me she was worried that we were getting together behind her back. It took a lot of convincing for her to fully believe that you were loyal to Joe." Sam said. While we talked, I heard some scuffled footsteps behind us and turned my head slightly to look at who was making the noise.
As I turned my head, I saw a man that I've never seen before. He looked to be in his mid 30's and based off of the way he was walking and the way his eyes were slow to move, I knew he was drunk. I took another look at the man, careful not to make it too obvious, and watched as the man held up his phone out to us. By now, the boys knew someone was behind us, but thought nothing of it. "Joe burrow." the man said. Joe, realizing the man was probably a fan, kept on walking. "Joe! Hey wait up! Can I get a picture with you." The man said again, followed by saying Joes name continuously to try and get his attention.
"Who is that?" I asked Joe. "Just keep walking. once we pass security up here they'll deal with him. He's not even supposed to be in here." Joe said and pulled me closer to him, not wanting any of us to pay any attention to him. "Do I have to fuck your wife to get your attention?" The man said with a small and weird chuckle, slurring his words like crazy. "What the hell." Ja'marr said and turned around. Joe clenched his jaw and turned around with Ja'marr. "What the fuck did you just say to me?" Joe asked in an angry tone, stepping closer to the man. "Hey, security!" Sam yelled, wanting security to step in before Joe did something. "There he is! Can I get a picture with you real quick?” The man asked and stepped forwards. Once closer, he began looking me up and down and said, “and maybe take her for a spin afterwards.” A shiver ran down my spine as I scowled at him in disgust.
"Let's go Joe, security is coming." I said and walked in front of Joe to try and stop him from doing something stupid. In times like these, Joe was a hot head. The man was known as 'Joe Cool' on and off the football field until it involved the people he loved. "No, no, say that again to my fucking face." Joe said. "Just back the fuck up man!" Ja'marr said to the man, standing by Joes side. No matter what, Ja’marr was always by Joe’s side, especially when it came to disgusting people like this man. "C’mon, Can I just get a pic real quick?” The man said and held up his phone and got both him and Joe in frame, except I was in it also. The man, not liking that I was in it, slipped the phone into his pocket and then put both of his hands on my shoulders. Since I was facing Joe in an attempt to keep him moving, I could see a few security guards coming up to us that Sam got. All of a sudden, I felt his arms on my shoulders and then he spun me around slightly, pushed me to the side so I wasn't in the way. One second I had both of my feet planted on the ground, and the next I lost my footing because of my big boots and fell to the ground.
Not expecting to fall so abruptly, I let out a faint scream as my knees skidded across the concrete. From above me, multiple shouts and yells echoed through the walls of the tunnel. There was a lot of commotion for about 5 seconds and then I felt 2 firm hands go onto my sides from behind me. Quickly, I was lifted off of the ground and placed back on my feet. I quickly turned around and made eye contact with Joe whose eyes were filled with anger. "I'm fine, I'm fine." I said quickly and then looked to Ja'marr who was going off on the man who touched me and also the security guards who let the man slip past them. Once joe could tell by my expression that I was okay, he turned around and took a step closer to the man who was being put in handcuffs my a police officer who came rushing over after seeing the commotion.
"Don't you ever lay your fucking hands on my wife again!" Joe yelled and then added in, “you hear me!” I looked to the man quickly and then at Sam who walked over to me and put a hand on my shoulder. "Let's go over here." He told me and then guided me over to the side and away from everyone else. “Holy shit." I said, flustered from everything that just happened. It all happened so quickly. "Are you okay?" He asked me as we both turned around. Joe and Ja'marr were currently going off and raising their voices at the security guards who let the man get into the tunnel. The man was not wearing a pass and was not a family member of any of the players, so how he was able to get into the tunnel was beyond any of us. "I'm fine, I just fucking scraped the hell out of my knee's though." I let out a little exasperated laugh.
We both looked down at my knees. One was bloody just around the scrape, and the other one had a bigger wound on it which was currently dripping blood down my leg and onto my new boots. "Oh shit, that's not just a scrape." He said while laughing slightly because of the way I addressed the blood on my knees. “Oh no, my boots.” I said with a frown. After a few more minutes, more people gathered around the scene including a few more police officers, Zac Taylor, Jessica who came and found Sam and was currently having him fill her in a few feet away from me, and then Logan Wilson and Morgan who didn't leave yet. "Oh my gosh, are you okay?" Morgan asked when she got over to me, looking down at my scraped up knees.
"Yeah, I'm fine, I promise, it's just a little scrape." I said. Morgan and Logan stood by my side as we all watched what was going on in front of us. "How did he even get back here?" Joe said loudly. Zac stepped in between Joe and one of the police officers who was currently taking the man to his car outside. Joe and zac started talking. "What even happened? Who was that?" Morgan asked me. Logan stepped closer, wanting to hear what happened also. "A random guy from behind us kept trying to get Joe to take a picture with him. He was obviously drunk and whatever so we just planned on ignoring him until we got closer to the security guard so he could deal with him. When Joe wouldn't listen, the man literally said 'Do I have to fuck your wife to get your attention'." I said.
"That’s disgusting." Morgan said and put a hand over her mouth slightly, a sour look on her face. Logan's face scrunched up in disbelief and disgust and then looked over to the scene while still listening. I explained the rest of what happened to them and then the police asked to clear the area and informed Joe that the man was being taken to jail. As the area began to empty and everything died down, Joe walked over to me, but didn't notice my knees yet because of the chaos that just occurred. "I'm so sorry, are you okay?" Joe asked me his eyes darting from my right eye and left eye and cupped the sides of my face gently in his hands. His breathing was fast and ragged, obviously shaken up from what just happened too. Bringing my hands up, I grabbed onto Joes wrists that were on either side of my face and took a deep breath. "I'm fine, I promise you. I wouldn’t have even fallen if I wasn’t wearing these big boots. It was a small fall, that it." I said.
I looked deeply into Joes eyes with a small and reassuring smile, and shook my head to show that I was indeed fine. "Are you 100% sure? He shouldn’t have even put his hands on you." Joe said. "My knees along with my ego are a little damaged, but that's it, I promise." I said. Joe couldn't help but let out a small laugh at what I said before realizing that I said my knees. Quickly, Joe glanced down at my knees to see blood dripping down my right leg. "Shit, I didn’t know you were bleeding." He said quickly and then removed his hands from the sides of my face.
Joe kept his eyes on my knees for a few seconds before turning around a little. "Joe it's fine, I'll just wipe it off." I said and placed my hand gently on his arm, trying to pull him around towards me.  Joe looked at me quickly and said, "if the medical staff is still here then you're getting your knees cleaned up." The face he gave me told me that he wanted me to go along with him and not try to change his mind. Once again, he turned around and called Zac's name before he got too far down the tunnel. "Yeah?" Zac asked in a concerned tone. "Is the medical staff still here? I just want to get her knees cleaned up real quick and make sure she doesn't need stitches or anything." Joe said, taking a step forwards.
"I don't need stitches, it's just a little scrape." I said with a small laugh and walked by his side as Zac started to walk our way. "Well how am I supposed to know? All I see is blood dripping down your leg." Joe said, looking down at my knees again. "Oh man," Zac looked down at my knees, "Yeah, there are a few still in the locker room. Just come with me." He said. We all headed towards the locker room. I was in between Zac and Joe who was still a little fidgety and on edge after what just happened. Even though I was the one that got pushed down and hurt, Joe seems to be affected more by it. The way he keeps looking down at me and flashes those 'I'm sorry' eyes at me makes me want to pull him to the side and make him understand that I'm okay.
We finally got to the locker room and Zac found us someone who had their gear out still. So it went quicker, we just went over to Joes locker where I could sit down and the medic could clean up my knees and throw bandaids on them if needed. Zac said goodbye to the both of us and once again apologized for what happened. As soon as I saw Joes locker, my mouth almost dropped open. There were shoes, clothes, hats, some snacks, and many more random and weird things thrown around Joes locker room. It looked like a tornado came to Cincinnati and only hit Joes locker; plus a few other players lockers. "Do you ever clean? My goodness look at how gross it is." I laughed as I sat myself down on the fold out chair in front of Joes locker. Looking offended, Joe just chuckled and then kicked a few of the shoes that were in the open closer to his locker.
"The hate is really not necessary. Plus, it's not that bad." Joe said with a small shrug. Furrowing my brows, I looked around at Joes locker while the medic who kneeled down in front of me began to grab things out of his kit. Looking back up to Joe, he just started laughing at my reaction. "You really think this isn't "that bad?"" I asked, using air quotations to really emphasize what Joe just said to me about his terrible locker. "Okay, okay, it's pretty bad." We both started to laugh together and then the medic looked up at me, so I gave him my attention. "I'm just going to clean off some of this blood and then the actual wound itself. Once I get to the wound, it might sting a little bit." He said to me. "Alright, go for it." I said with a little laugh while Joe grabbed onto my hand and gave it a little squeeze.

- his face drops into a frown and he picks out something 10x uglier and say it looks like something ud wear
- sean secretly buys what u say is cute but u cant afford bc thrifting is so expensive for no reason these days
- “guess what i got” and he slithers it out of his bag with an evil smile 😭 suddenly him dissing u for an hour straight doesnt even matter anymore
- once esteban texts sean for dinner u guys hop on the bus back home. he never asks sean to come home for dinner alone though! common courtesy to invite the gf
- sharing wired earbuds on the bus ride home always. sean plays little love songs bc he only listens to music that he relates to in that specific moment 😭 corny but cute. he def has songs in his head that he thinks are ur guys’ songs and plays them every chance he gets
- when u first started eating with the diaz family it was so painfully awkward
- though he kind of likes it now, he did not want his girlfriend to get to know esteban or daniel too well LMAO he didnt want to be embarrassed by anything they possibly could say
- still, even when he tried so hard to avoid it, daniel and esteban still found their ways
- estebans the kind of dad to bring up embarrassing stories about sean when he was a kid bc he KNOWS how much his son would hate it
- “y’know (y/n), im surprised seanie boy over here even managed to get a girlfriend in the first place”
- “why is that, mr. diaz?”
- “i remember he thought girls couldn’t poop until he was in middle school! i had to break the news for him—he was in denial for weeks. his voice was shaking when i told him and everything!” u can see sean pause mid-chew in the corner of his eye 😭 “and please, call me esteban”
- you just awkwardly nodded and tried to not bust out laughing. sean notices and kicks u under the table which makes u ACTUALLY bust out laughing
- esteban and daniel knew from there u were one to be trusted
- “i bet (y/n) doesn’t poop” daniel randomly said when u left that night. seans immediately swiveled his head around 😭
- just like with lyla, daniel seemed to have a crush on u as well. the only difference is that sean tries to shut it down REALLY quick.
- “she shits all the time. sometimes i wipe her ass for her bc she shits so much”
- daniel’s “eww…” is like music to his ears
- u always playfully punch him when he does this in front of u and ask why he makes u look bad in front of him
- sean never admits its bc hes jealous of a little kid 😭 he just changes the subject and kisses u bc he thinks hes sneaky
- over the summer he randomly got a buzz and didnt say anything to anybody
- he just opened his front door standing there bald as if nothing happened and ur eyes wld just kind of widen
- u wld eventually tell him it looks good tho bc it DOES he pulls it off so well
- that summer u wld always randomly start feeling his head because the texture is so interesting
- it got to the point where hed just sit on the floor in front of wherever u were so ud get to feel his freshly mowed head
- he always ends up dozing off bc its so comforting and u wld feel his head pressed on ur inner leg.
- u also get the privilege of cutting/buzzing his hair 😋
- sean doesnt trust himself so u guys sit for 40 mins watching a brad mondo video before u start going ape on his hair
- he gets kind of nervous when u get close to his face and does that thing where u switch between a persons right eye and left eye while smiling awkwardly 😭
- surprisingly it turns out good!
- i feel like ud be super nit-picky on ur work, thinking its total ass. he wld just say its perfect over and over again
- he always stares at any reflective surface and smiles like a dork in front of it. even if u did do a shit job, he probably wouldnt notice or care all that much bc he loves blindly ❤️
im on winter break so i get to be cringe and free for endless hours thank u to like the 3 other people who also like sean diaz. u r all real ones

Growing up in Seattle, our Friday night menu was nearly the same every week: chicken soup, roast chicken slathered in teriyaki sauce, a starchy side and salad. We always had a large bottle of Yoshida teriyaki sauce in the fridge, a fixture in the side door. But why were we eating teriyaki chicken for Shabbat dinner?
Teriyaki chicken is an iconic Seattle dish; it wasn’t until I moved away that I discovered not every city is teeming with great teriyaki shops. The dish is rooted in Japanese cuisine: Teriyaki is a traditional Japanese style of cooking where a protein is cooked over a flame while it is basted in a sauce made of soy sauce, sugar, sake and/or mirin. “Yaki” means grill, and “teri” means shine. The sticky, sweet teriyaki sauce most Americans are familiar with was developed by Japanese American immigrants.
Seattle’s version of teriyaki deviates from its Japanese roots thanks to a man named Toshihiro Kasahara. In 1976, Kasahara opened Toshi’s Teriyaki Restaurant, which quickly became a wildly successful Seattle lunch spot. Kasahara inspired a wave of teriyaki establishments across the city and the region, helping make the dish ubiquitous in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle-style teriyaki is loaded with ginger and garlic, and instead of basting the meat, teriyaki is more often made by marinating the meat in sauce overnight. It’s typically served with steamed rice and an iceberg lettuce salad with gingery, tangy dressing. The store-bought sauce my family used was also developed by a Seattle resident, Kyoto-born Junki Yoshida.
Food in the diaspora is always influenced by our neighbors, and teriyaki has become a welcome staple in Jewish homes, particularly across the Pacific Northwest. This recipe is designed to give you all the flavors and char that great teriyaki chicken offers, with the ease of preparing a complete meal on a sheet pan. The sauce is salty, thick, gingery and sweet, and as the chicken cooks, it releases its juices and flavors to the surrounding vegetables. You can substitute homemade sauce for your favorite premade bottle, and you can ditch the oven and cook this on the grill for extra char. Served with a steaming heap of short grain rice, it makes a delicious, simple meal for Shabbat, or any day of the week.
Note: You can swap drumsticks for chicken thighs, but if you would like to swap for boneless, skinless breasts the cook time may be slightly longer. The dish reheats well in the microwave, stovetop or oven.

Lana arrives, nice to the entire staff, shes thrilled to see the store packed, line around the block. She sat in our green room/break room for a while, seeming fragile and nervous. I could sense that the crowd was excited and was going to shower her w love. We all knew what she had been through on SNL (unjustly criticized). She couldn’t start her first song, the crowd was screaming for her. She engaged with the crowd: “This means so much to me guys, you have no idea.” She owned the stage, owned the songs.
Once the performance ended, Lana walked off stage, the applause wouldn’t stop. Her band stayed on stage. Lana is in our back room/store room. She was sitting on the back of the stage, crying, the curtain was blocking her from being seen. I went up to her, I said, “Lana, this doesn’t happen much at record shop in-stores, but I can tell you, they aren’t going to stop, I know this crowd, they are here for you, they adore you, they want to hear another song. What do you think?” She stands up, she’s trembling, her lips are quivering. I didn’t know what to do, but to hug her. She’s still trembling. She looks at me and says, “Do you know why I wanted to play here and come to Seattle? Nirvana is my most favorite band ever. “Heart Shaped Box” is my favorite song, it’s the first song I ever learned. Should I?”
It looked like she was about ready to get back on stage. She turned to me and said, “You know what … can you turn the lights on? It’s been such a great day, I don’t want to mess it up. I wanna go meet the crowd, sign some autographs, take photos … and can you please crank Nirvana the rest of the night? Start with “Heart Shaped Box.” Loud, please. This was so fun, thank you so much.”

occurring to me that I somehow literally have not mentioned this on here yet but I moved!! into an actual normal human sized 2 bedroom apartment with my partner and our 2 friends in a neighborhood that actually feels like a place where actual real life human beings live. cannot stress how absolutely perfect the area is like it almost feels like the downtown/main street area of a smaller town like Eugene or Olympia which imo after living near actual downtown seattle for the last half a year (and wanting to blow my fucking brains out every time i stepped outside after a certain point) feels like the perfect middle ground between still cool/exciting/urban and residential. grocery store across the street a million genuinely affordable little restaurants and bars all fucking over the place (which btw I'm so fucking hype about because seeing/smelling all the restaurants I'd walk past in belltown that I would never in my life be afford made me want to kill myself) and my favorite beach park in the city is literally a mile and half down our street. kicks ass

Read on AO3
Elain stood staring at the sign on the door. It was opening night for the new Thai restaurant in town. At least she thought it was opening night.
“Join us on opening night…February 15th,” the gorgeous redhead standing beside her read.
“Lucien, I’m so sorry. I could have sworn it was February 14th,” Elain pleaded. “I thought it was cute because it’s Valentine’s Day and I thought that would be fitting for our date but I guess it’s not the right day and-”
“Elain,” Lucien cut off her rambling, amusement clear in his tone. “It’s okay, really.”
It was supposed to be perfect. February 14th, the anniversary of the first time he ever stepped foot in her flower shop. He’d been looking for a bouquet to take to his late girlfriend’s, Jesminda’s, grave for his first Valentine’s Day without her. It had broken her heart and in the year since then, she got to know him more every time he visited the store.
And Thai food, their favorite, which they found out one night he swung by during her lunch and caught her sneaking bites of her noodles while trying to help some customers out. When she finally got to helping him, he simply smiled and pointed toward his cheek in a motion letting her know there was something on her face. Elain just about died of mortification when she swiped a noodle off her cheek.
Now they stood outside the locked door of the restaurant. She felt awful, she wanted this to go so well. After a full year of suppressed feelings and missed opportunities, they were finally on their first official date together. And she had ruined it.
Elain felt his hand brush hers. “Hey,” he called gently. She lifted her head to meet his gaze. One a beautiful gold and one a gorgeous brown. When their eyes met, he spoke again. “Elain, I don’t care if we had our date at this restaurant or under a bridge. What matters to me is that I’m with you.”
Her heart soared and a smile spread on her lips. He always managed to do that. Read her mind, reassure her heart.
“Me too,” she said finally, and his eyes softened at her words. Elain linked her fingers with his and turned to start heading toward the car. “Let’s make the trek back so we can figure out how to salvage this date.”
A laugh rumbled from his chest. “There’s nothing to salvage, it’s perfect.”
It seemed his words were a trigger for whatever God was listening because just as he said that, a loud rumbling broke through the skies.
“You have got to be shitting me,” Elain grumbled. In a matter of seconds, it had started pouring rain. And they still had to walk all the way back to the car. Parking in Seattle was hell, they’d had to park three blocks away.
Lucien tugged on her hand and so she turned to look at him. They were rapidly getting drenched, his hair getting a shade darker with the rain. Before she could think of anything to say, Lucien blurted, “Race you to the car,” and broke off into a sprint.
“Lucien!” Elain called after him, laughter in her voice. She ran toward him, eager to catch up. Elain suspected he slowed down for her because she was able to run past him. “Better run faster if you plan on earning a good night kiss,” she threw over her shoulder.
She heard his playful growl seconds before he caught her by the waist and spun her around. Shocked laughter fell from Elain’s lips. They were soaked from being out in the cold rain, but she couldn’t feel the slightest chill because her heart was warming her from the inside out.
Elain’s laughter died down when Lucien set her on her feet. Wet strands of auburn hair framed his face, droplets of rain glittered in his eyelashes, his cheeks were flushed from running, eyes twinkling. Elain was momentarily stunned by his beauty. He reached to brush a wet lock of hair away from her forehead. The rain pelting her offset the heat from his fingers on her skin.
Lucien was trailing his fingering over her brow, down her cheek, and then tracing her lips. All the while his eyes tracked the movement, his gaze landing on her lips. Her stomach tightened in anticipation.
“How about that kiss, Elain?” It came out as a rasp.
Elain came up on the tip of her toes. She brought her face closer, lips ghosting over his. She pulled away, ready to make a playful remark, when Lucien grasped the back of her neck and brought her lips to his.
The kiss was unhurried, as if after a year of restraint and near kisses he wanted to savor everything about this one. Warmth pooled in her gut and spread throughout her body. She was gone for him. Every pass of his lips over hers bringing her closer to oblivion.
When they pulled away, they wore twin smiles. Small, coy, a bit teasing on Lucien’s part. It seemed they had forgotten where they were, only the two of them while a blanket of rain covered them.
The spell broke when a shiver passed through Elain.
A small chuckle left Lucien’s mouth. “Let’s get you out of this rain,” he punctuated his sentence with a cheeky smile. “I have a few ideas of how to warm you up.”

where's a good place for leather stuff? I wanna get a harness and some other stuff that's well made and Ideallt LGBT owned
In an anonymous message I can recommend you online stores but I really recommend shopping in person, where you can see how it fits or get it adjusted. Ask around and see what the nearest leather shop or gay boutique is to you, chat with leather folk on hookup apps and ask them (it'll help if they're in your area to give localized advice), or see if there are any leather, kink, or even general pride events going on near you. I got my first real harness at leather night at my favorite bar, where 64Ten from Chicago had set up shop. Most leather shops are LGBT owned from what I understand, but I understand if the big names like Mr S feel impersonal. There are lots of independent leather artists like Toi Ano, SmellMyLeather in Seattle (thanks Seattle friend for recommending), or Little Death leather. You can find all of them on Instagram, and they all make more open ended and artistic designs than the standard bulldog harness. Personally my harnesses are pretty straightforward because a broad like me wants them tugged on. Not just fashion but function, ya know. Leather is a laborious process and predictably expensive, so a lot of people's first harnesses are neoprene. These are fine, just give it a little tug when you try it on to test the resistance (standard leather does work the best in this case but other materials are worth a try).

I know Vale had a lot of Spanish fans but after sepang 2015 did his following in Spain shrink likes Marc’s level of Italian fans probably dropped immensly but vale is like the king of the sport so I’m not sure if he would have lost as many Spanish fans as Marc did Italian ones. Also because he involved 2 Spanish riders would that impact the Spanish following and I’m not sure if the JL fans were fans of vale before sepang either.
Home to over a million people, Western North Carolina is a region in the United States culturally associated with the traditions of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. This region has a proud history that defies common stereotypes seen in films and television, which often prey on the generational poverty, lack of access to education, and distinctive accents that have characterized the region in the past. Contrary to these depictions, people from Southern Appalachia have cultivated a warm, unique folk tradition that has generated myriad works, including unique cultural practices concerning food, music, and craft. Bluegrass/country music is probably the most famous of these practices, and some of the most celebrated songwriters on the planet are from Southern Appalachia, including Dolly Parton (born ten miles from Great Smoky Mountain National Park), Loretta Lynn, and Tyler Childers. picture sources.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, the first people to live in Southern Appalachia were the Cherokee People, who still live in the area today. A federally recognized tribe, the Eastern Band of the Cherokee People are the descendants of the few who where able to avoid systematic removal of their ancestors by the US Government via the Trail of Tears. At the beginning of the Twentieth Century, the remaining members of the tribe consolidated their collective land holdings in WNC to create an entirely Tribally-governed reservation, which has over the years introduced several tribal initiatives to revive and maintain the Cherokee people's unique culture, practices, language, food, art, and folk tales. It cannot be overstated the influence the Cherokee have had (and continue to have) on the culture of the region. art source.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It should also be noted that this is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. Western North Carolina is home to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, as well as several National Forests that serve to protect a myriad of unique biomes and local wildlife. This area is one of two temperate rainforests in the United States, and experiences more rainfall in inches a year than Seattle. The name "Great Smoky Mountains" originates from the effect of the rainfall. Moisture hits the leaves of the abundant flora, and transpiration occurs, causing the plants to release evaporative clouds of mist, creating a "smoky" effect on the mountains. One of the most iconic wildflowers found in the area is trilium, which tends to bloom in the early spring in the shady patches of higher elevations. One of my personal favorites is called dutchman's pants! Which look like little lederhosen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The area is home to many forms of wildlife, including deer, black bear, elk, river otter, possums, red wolves, turkey, and skunks. We are also known as the salamander capital of the world, and the National Park hosts over 30 unique species, including the hellbender! The largest type of salamander in the world.
Tumblr media
Popular activities and attractions in the area include hiking, biking, whitewater rafting/kayaking, driving the Blue Ridge Parkway, visiting the Biltmore House (in Asheville, NC), and, speaking from personal experience, just kind of hanging out in various grocery store parking lots with your friends. Its a wonderful and beautiful place to live and I love it lots. all of this to say. i do not know SHIT about spanish perception of vale post-sepang. i suspect he was mostly fine.

It’s 9am and I’m still in showered, at home. Hardly anyone is working this week so my plan is to take it light and slow. I’ve been there long enough to know there will be 15 hour day peaks, so you take advantage of the valleys.
I spent several hours yesterday organizing. I moved some shelving up in the pantry - which almost killed me - but I can store some taller vases now.
I love how this little corner is turning out, it has my elephants from my travel, a piece of pottery a friend of mine from Seattle made, and books that are my favorites throughout my life. The glass table is from Target that my friend G helped me buy at my first house, and piece of art is from my friend R representing our friendship. I’m going to drop it a little lower but so far I love it there. My sofa is coming in a couple of weeks, all I want to get is an accent chair and a rug, then I’m done for a while.
I got a note from my property manager reminding me that I had not paid her in four months. I have no idea how that slipped from my mind, I’m like clockwork with it. Oddly we were in almost constant contact so I just don’t get it. It’s a little concerning.
Ok, I need to get in the shower.

Then I Saw Her (Ellison Oswalt x Reader) Part Two
Part One
word count: 1,429
warnings: takes place after the events of the movie, smoking, talks about death and condoms, ends with a cliffhanger
Tumblr media
It finally happened again. I saw the girl from the bookstore in Seattle again. Honestly, I’m kind of shocked that we saw each other again. Even after I survived that dreaded and frankly fucking terrible house. They made me sign a book deal and, as you might have guessed, another dreaded book tour. This time, at least,  they gave me a paper cup filled with bitter and sad coffee. Which, for Seattle, feels disappointing. The only thing worth noting about the whole day other than seeing her again was the number of people that showed up. People of different backgrounds came to me and asked to sign my shitty book about my trauma. And by all different backgrounds, I mean primarily white women and their bored-looking husbands. When she finally trekked up to me, her eyes seemed to light up the minute we locked eyes.
"Well, we will meet again." She said, placing the book on the table.
I opened the book for me to sign. Before my pen hit the paper, I noticed the title didn’t match the one I was there to advertise. It was Kentucky Blood, the first book.
"Yeah, and you’re making me sign the wrong book," I said, trying to lighten the mood.
She laughs, her sweet laugh, and takes the book back, placing it into her navy blue crossbody tote bag. Her hair looked so perfect as she dug around for the other book. My eyes slowly passed along her figure, and the line behind me was slowly getting smaller and smaller as people started to walk out the door and into the busy Seattle streets. Maybe people didn’t come to see me. I didn’t seem to mind, looking back.
"Here’s the right one, sorry." She places the right book on the table, sliding it to me.
"It's alright, sweetheart, no need to worry."
Under the yellow light, I could see the embarrassment on her face as I took out my Sharpie. I wanted so badly to ask her who she really was. Is she a morning person or a night person? What’s her favorite movie?
"So, um," she begins, "this is probably unprofessional, but I was wondering if you wanted to get coffee sometime?"
The minute I heard her say that, it felt like my heart would explode.
"Yes, I’ll be free in about an hour. Can we meet outside this bookstore?"
She looks to the floor, shy. "Yeah, I have something I need to do, but yeah. I’ll meet you here."
A part of me wasn’t surprised that she had a life outside of me, but I wondered what was so important. Maybe she wanted to go home and grab condoms- stop it!
This girl has been admiring me for god knows how long, and here I am, thinking impurely of her. She probably just needs to get something from the store or maybe her car, totally pure and wholesome, nothing more or less. I may know her name, but that doesn’t mean my mind can wander. I carefully watched her as she winked at me and walked out the door. She would be on my mind for the rest of the day.
___…___
Finally, the day was coming to a close. I stood outside the bookstore, patiently waiting for her to come back. I wanted to apologize to her if I seemed awkward or mean earlier. I didn’t want to offend her. A pack of Marlboro Red sat in my cardigan’s pocket. Suddenly, my mind thought of my now-dead wife. I missed her, sure, but at the same time, I didn’t care. I was about to meet a beautiful girl I’d only known briefly. Her hair felt perfect on her head, and her clothes fit perfectly. It’s what she would’ve wanted. She would’ve wanted me to move on, move to New York, continue my writing, and find a beautiful girl to see often. Out of the corner of my eye, I see a dark brown car pull up to me. The window rolls down, revealing her in a different, more put-together outfit. This Charming Man by The Smiths played softly in her car, hitting the doors.
"Hey partner, (Y/N), we met earlier," she said, her voice bubbly.
I was so starstruck, and I hate using that term. Star. Struck.
"Hey," I said. My voice was breathy. Like my words left my mouth with a struggle. "It's Ellison."
She flashes me a smile. "You wanna hop in and take a trip around? Don’t worry. I wasn’t planning on kidnapping you. I’m not a murderer or anything."
I shake my head. "Don’t worry, darling. I wasn’t thinking that. But yeah, let’s do some sightseeing."
She unlocked her car and gave me the motion to hop on it. I do, seating myself in the back. I knew if I sat up there with her, I wouldn’t be able to speak. It felt like that movie… I can’t remember the title, but you know the one. She looks at me in the rear view mirror and gives me a disapproving look. My eyebrows furrowed together, wondering what was wrong.
"Why are you back there? You should be up here with me." (Y/N) said, her eyes turning back to the road, still not starting the car.
"Well, I don’t know. I think I would explode if I looked at you too long."
She giggles, "Come on, I’m not hurting you with my charming good looks. Relax, you’re safe with me."
Relax, you’re safe with me.
When she said that, my heart stopped. It was so flirty and different. Before I could even blink again. I closed the door and sat next to her.
"See? That wasn’t so bad, was it?"
I shake my head ‘ no,’ I feel too afraid to speak. I’ll say something stupid and then walk to my hotel alone. God, this girl is so fucking amazing.
"So, where to go first?" she said, looking over to my lap.
"Anywhere." I plainly said.
"Alright, I know just the place."
She finally started up the car and pulled away from the bookstore where I sat for hours, hearing the same few words said about my book or me. She passed a few small businesses and street performers before coming to a dirty-looking club. It seemed like a popular place to hang out during the day and into the later hours, judging by the long line waiting to get inside. (Y/N) parked the car and looked at me.
"Are you ready?" she said as she unlocked the doors.
I was scared shitless. Going inside seemed like an okay idea… if I wanted to get stabbed.
It was reckless.
My car door swung open, and she grabbed my sweater’s sleeve, dragging me out of the car's warmth. The writing on the wall outside grew enormous as we walked inside. This was it. I was going to die. I am a grown man now getting stared at by a colorful crowd of bikers and women who stared daggers at me. She continues to drag me all the way up to the bar. I look up at the menu. All the drinks are named after obscure Broadway shows or terrible movies. The lights feel like they are going to burn my irises. My eyes lower, looking at the bar itself. She yells for the bartender and looks over at me. She can tell I’m uncomfortable, but I highly doubt she even cares.
"So, what’s the name of this place? It's very…interesting." I asked politely.
"Anywhere." She yells, despite the music not being that loud.
"The place is called ‘Anywhere?’" I asked again. Was she being serious or lying to my face?
She nods her head, seemingly pleased by her reply.
Maybe this was a bad idea. I knew that her taking me here had half a chance of being the best night of my life. All those hopes slip right out of my hand as I look at her again, now chatting with a younger man at the bar. It felt like I wasn’t even there, like a ghost trapped in the empty halls where the ghost’s life had ended. People slowly get up and leave, still looking at me. I want to be angry, wondering when she’ll let me go. Her eyes lean back to me, the younger lad still talking.
I imagine what the stars look like outside. They sparkle, sure, but the actual stars were few and far between.
Maybe I was one of those stars.
Bright, and yet, very few like me.

Images from this years Kumoricon 2023! Portland is such a fun city, and my good friends Deb & Brian drove down from Seattle to hang out for the weekend. I got to meet voice actors Dani Chambers and J. Michael Tatum (he's really TALL by the way!). Happy to see RWBY cosplay still out there in the wild (Ruby Rose, Blake Belladonna) as well as Old and New Vash the Stampede. Even some Barbie cosplay! I flew out on Thursday to PDX (after several delays and a VERY bumpy ride until we passed the Rockies), at lunch at PDX in the same bar & grill at PDX (Hopworks) with the same bartender, whom I greeted. I then went straight to the Oregon State Convention Center after a quick ride on the Red MAX Line Train (light rail). It was late enough in the day that I was able to check into my hotel room at the Hyatt Regency without delay. I dropped off my things and promptly got on TriMet Bus #77 to the local Safeway grocery store, and came back with 2 six packs of PNW craft brew in tow and some distilled water for my CPAP. I got snacky late at night and had a Tuna Poke Bowl at the hotel bar in the Lobby, then I went back upstairs and binged Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix on my iPad until like 4am, then snoozed for a few hours before getting up for the breakfast buffet to start my day at the con. Unfortunately the viewing room had technical issues so some of the anime content I wanted to watch I couldn't at the scheduled times, which was annoying. I got to meet Dani Chambers and had her autograph a character print of a Chibi version of Chise from Ancient Magus Bride, then had a California chicken sandwich at Red Robin and then met my friends at the hotel. They had to go to pick up their badges so I got in line for the AMV Contest screening. It took my friends 2.5 HOURS to clear registration, which was a nightmare. Deb ended up catching only the final category, so we made time to watch the encore AMV Contest screening Sunday morning. They went back to Seattle on Sunday after lunch but I attended the AMV Contest Winners reveal screening which was also fun. We did at least watch the AMV Aftershow on Saturday before grabbing dinner at the hotel restaurant. We watched Kaze-san and Morning Glories (English Dub) in the viewing room Friday evening then went out separate ways. Saturday we did shopping in the Dealer's Room/Artist Alley, then took the Blue MAX Line train over into the West bank side of Portland. We had a sushi lunch then appetizers at Deschutes Brewery (a Portland institution!) then rode the streetcar back to catch the Red MAX Line train back to the hotel. We attended a panel called Laugh Out Loud AMVs that was actually more like a game show and not very good. We did get a few laughs at the end but we kinda wish the whole panel had been that way. We got some to-go dinners from Burgertime and unfortunately Deb & Brian were pooped out and retired to their room while I attended the AMV Classics panel which was GREAT. All in all, it was a great trip and I still love Kumoricon (my 2nd time, back to back) and I really like Portland, Oregon. It's probably one of my favorite out of state cons now. I even worked up the courage to Cosplay as Lum's Dad from Urusei Yatsura. Not the best, I know, but best I could throw together as an amateur on my budget. I did that Friday when the weather was best.

My Favorite Albums of 2023*
*not necessarily from 2023
Last year, I decided that, instead of limiting my "favorite" list to just the past year, I would broaden the scope to include any CD I acquired that year, whether it was released that year or not. Over the past 12 months, I've added 155 CDs to the already over-burdened collection (which may seem like a lot but it's down from 260 last year, so I believe some praise is due). These are my favorite 9, in alphabetical order by album title.

Foo Fighters - But Here We Are
"Times Like These," whether he intended it to be or not, was one of the very few, great post-9/11 songs. And while I might expect that from Springsteen, Grohl didn't immediately spring to mind as a voice of comfort and empathy, so the song's impact may have actually been a bit greater than something akin to "The Rising" (which, don't get me wrong, is an amazing song). And now, a couple decades later, it shouldn't be surprising that a Foo Fighters album dealing with intense and intimate grief would also be stunning, but, like before, I certainly wasn't expecting it and also, like before, I've turned to it a hell of a lot more than I would have thought.

Caroline Polachek - Desire, I Want To Turn Into You
You know those albums where you really like a bunch of the songs but not all of them but you also know that, with each repeated listen, you're going to find ways into the songs you didn't like as much on previous listens and come up with reasons why you actually do like those songs and therefore, think the entire album is brilliant? Yeah, this is one of those albums.
Tumblr media
billy woods and kenny segal - maps
Let me preface this by saying that I am years late to the billy woods party, so I do not have any way of comparing this to his previous, abundant discography, but if it is at all indicative of the rest of his work, I have some major catching up to do! woods is a top notch lyricist with a clear love of language and the ways in which it can be structured. His metaphors and imagery are complex and layered but never so obtuse that they alienate the listener. And all of this verbal brilliance is nestled comfortably on segal's inviting but never settled production. I'll come back to this one often.
Tumblr media
Stevie Wonder - Original Musiquarium I
I'm not normally a fan of "best of" compilations but this one, with the addition of the four unreleased tracks capping each "side," is so well put together and clearly thought through, I'm thrilled to have it as a part of my collection. Plus, it's really hard to ever go wrong with Stevie.
Tumblr media
Laura Mvula - Pink Noise
Roughly 5 years ago, I heard "She," and was blown away. I added Sing to the Moon to my discogs want list but never got around to snagging a copy. About 3 years ago, I heard "Got Me" and decided to be a bit more active in trying to acquire a copy of Pink Noise, but I think there were some transatlantic issues because nothing seemed to be remotely affordable. Fast forward to midway through this year, the album miraculously pops up on Amazon for under 10 bucks and a day or two later, I'm finally blessed with these 10 fiercely intelligent yet uncompromisingly catchy pop bangers.
Tumblr media
Pool Kids - Pool Kids
It's mathy, it's tappy, it's stupidly technical, but if you strip that all away, at its heart, these are 12 solid pop-punk/emo songs. So while the base effort is already worthwhile, the tremendous musicality turns them into something truly special.
Tumblr media
Atmosphere - Sad Clown Bad Fall 10
Okay, so it's only 5 tracks but hear me out. I was introduced to Slug and Ant through their brief stint with Epitaph Records and their, imho, brilliant album, Seven's Travels. Over the years, I've picked up an Atmosphere album here and there, but my takeaways have been lackluster and I started to wonder whether they were just a one-off in my book. And then I found this at a used record store in Seattle, and it not only reignited the flame but made me want to revisit the rest of my collection. That's pretty impressive for only 16 minutes of music.
Tumblr media
Triple Fast Action - Triple Fast Action
Triple Fast Action were probably the favorite band your favorite 90's alt-rock band (The Colour and the Shape was, apparently, greatly influenced by Broadcaster) and with only two albums to their name, it was a wonderful surprise to discover this treasure trove of unreleased and rare tracks, most of which were recorded in their rehearsal studio. While not everything is great, there's a general bittersweet air hovering around this 2-disc compilation - they could have been big, but for whatever reason, the stars didn't align. At least we now have so much more music.
Tumblr media
Ratboys - The Window
Ratboys aren't reinventing the wheel here. They pull upon most of the major indie rock tropes of the past couple of years (Americana, pop-punk, prog rock...) but even with the genre hopping, the album shifts seamlessly from track to track and always feels authentic. What would we do with a new wheel anyway? Wouldn't you rather just get the top-of-the-line version?
