ugh i really hate this one volleyball commentator. he is announcing the game im watching (ukraine vs colombia) and he a) he is just so negative about all the plays and the players b) keeps singling out one of the Colombian players, Ana Karina, and while she isn't the only Black player she does have the darkest skin... it really feels like she has been targeted since the beginning. she is a heavy hitter who takes a lot of risks, sometimes they don't pay off but she is still one of the top scorers, but whenever she scores (and this is often over the replay of her epic point which just really makes it so jarring) he will say something like "earlier she was playing just foul volleyball, remember xyz failures, but here she actually scored, maybe she's finally woken up, but before she played very poorly, remember that?" and "i can't believe they managed to score a point despite that awful pass from Ana Karina" and just really focuses on her mistakes way more than the other players.
I feel like a different person would say something like "excellent comeback from a shaky start!" like her coach would have swapped her out by now if she was really that bad. And Colombia is losing where I'm at in the game but she is not the only one making errors but she is the one that is called out. Just the way he said her name when she was introduced made my uncomfortable, like i was only listening to the lineup but I noticed how he said it.
i already didnt like this guy, mostly bc of some faux pas that made me uncomfortable in other games that also had women commentators but on his own he is just so critical of these really impressive women, but especially singling out the player with the darkest skin always with something negative to say, and backhanded compliments if any!!

lake days & a broken nose (2)
pairing: trevor zegras x hughes!reader
warnings: profanity
summary: it’s been months since you broke trevor’s nose at the lake house. what happens after that?
a/n: this is a part 2 since someone requested it (: you can find part 1 here
masterlist: here
Tumblr media
ever since i broke trevor’s nose, and apologized profusely about it, we’ve become closer friends. we even exchanged numbers and would text everyday.
i was on my way back to my small apartment on campus since my senior year started. i unlock the door and cut the lights on. i practically jump out of my skin when i see someone on my couch.
“trevor?”
“the one and only.” he gets off the couch and engulfs me in a hug.
“holy fucking shit, i missed you so much.” he laughs
“i missed you too, hughesy.” we pull apart and i look at him, not believing that he was in front of me.
“what are you doing here? how’d you get here?” he laughs at my rapid-fire questions.
“i came to surprise you, and i flew here.” my eyes widen
“all the way from anaheim?” he nods “that’s too far. you didn’t have to do that.” he shrugs
“missed my favorite hughes,” he then leans in. “don’t let the other three know that you’re my favorite.” he shoots me a wink
“it’ll be our secret,” i tell him and set my bag by my bedroom door.
“sorry the place is a mess, i wasn’t expecting company.” he looks around at the space and laughs.
“you think this is bad? try rooming with four other hockey players who are superstitious.” i wince
“i’ve seen the guys on the team and they look like they’re messy.” he gasps
“you aren’t seeing other hockey players behind my back are you?” he jokingly asks and i place a hand over my heart.
“i would never.” we both laugh and i fall back on the couch.
“you fancy takeout and a movie?”
“depends on where and what movie.”
“i was thinking chinese and happy gilmore.”
“i’m sold.” he takes a seat beside me and i grab the takeout menu from the coffee table. i hand it to trevor and he takes it, scanning it.
“orange chicken.” is all he says and i nod
“good pick.” i grab my phone and dial the number, calling in the order. they said one of us would have to go and pick it up and trevor volunteered to do so.
“here’s my car keys,” i stop him before he leaves the room. “leave a scratch on the pimp mobile and you’ll have another broken nose.” he holds up his hands
“don’t worry, it’ll be in mint condition.” he then leaves the room to go get it. i turn on the movie and have it on pause as i wait. figuring he’d be a minute, i decide to take a shower. and like any sane person, music is a must. if you don’t go on tour to at least half the globe, what are you doing?
i grab a shampoo bottle and start to belch the lyrics to when i was your man.
“ALTHOUGH IT HURRRRRRTS, I’LL BE THE FIIIIRST TO SAY THAT, I WAS WROOOOOOOONG.” this part was my absolute favorite of the song because of the way he drags out the word ‘wrong.’ once my tour and shower was done, i change into my pajamas and head back into the room to see trevor sitting on the couch with a very amused smile on his face.
“you were pouring your heart out.” my fave goes red and i grumble, sitting beside him. he takes our food out the bags and places the trays in front of us on the table.
“oh! i also bought some sprite. figured we get thirsty.”
“smart idea, let me go grab some cups and ice.” i get back up and head to the kitchenette, grabbing two cups. i fill them both with ice, heading back to the couch. i hand trevor his and hold mine out for him.
“to the brim, z. the. brim.” he laughs and pours sprite into my cup, filling it to the brim as asked. i take a sip and sigh of content.
“sprite is like flavored tv static, but i love it.”
“that’s going to fuck with me for the rest of the day.”
“good.” we then get comfortable as we eat our chinese food and watch happy gilmore.
“adam sandler is such a god.” trevor says with a mouthful of rice.
“if i ever met that man, i’d probably cry and shit my pants at the same time.” trevor laughs and sprite comes out of his nose. i laugh at his predicament and he grabs a paper towel, wiping his nose.
“that burned. i can now smell sprite.”
“i’m just that funny.” he rolls his eyes.
it was starting to get late and trevor hadn’t left yet.
“where’re you staying?”
“was figuring i could crash on your couch?”
“oh nonsense. we can share my room.” he nods and we walk into my room.
“welcome to the fortress of y/n-tude. you can set your bags by the closet.” he does as told and drops his duffel bag and then unzips it, pulling out a hoodie and some sweats.
“do you-” my eyes widen and i nod.
“oh yeah, of course. my bad.” i turn around and face the wall as he changes.
“okay, im done.” i turn back around and my breath is gone. how does he manage to make a hoodie and sweats seem so nice?
“y/n?” i snap out of my trance
“yeah?” he laughs
“i asked if you wanted to sleep on the left or right side of the bed?”
“yes. uh, it doesn’t matter to me.” he nods and gets in on the left side. i slide in on the right side and i cut off my nightstand lamp.
“goodnight trev”
“goodnight y/n/n”
somehow throughout the night, trevor and i ended up tangled with one another. i woke up to my head on his chest and my arms wrapped around his torso.
“morning y/n/n,” i hear his husky morning voice and i look up at him. he goes to move but i groan and stop him.
“five more minutes. you’re warm” i close my eyes again and he laughs, running his hand through my hair. i could get used to this everyday.
“trevor?” i sleepily ask and he hums
“i think i’m in love with you.” i can feel his heartbeat quicken and i sleepily smile.
“you don’t mean that.” i open my eyes and look up at him
“i meant every word.” i give him a sleepy smile and he smiles too.
“thank god, i didn’t know how much longer i could go before i told you.” we both laugh and he places a kiss on top of my head. my phone then buzzed and i reach over and grab it, answering the facetime call. quinn’s face then appears on the screen.
“q! how’s my favorite older brother?” he laughs
“i’m good- wait. who’s with you?” oh shit
“what do you mean?”
“y/n, i can see someone’s hand. and unless you became a contortionist, who is it?” i sigh and look up at trevor really quickly to see if he’s okay with it. he nods and i move the phone so that it’s facing him.
“trevor?!” i hear quinn gasp and trevor waves
“hey quinn…”
“okay, i saw this coming anyways.” he brushes it off. “but trevor, if you break my sister’s heart, you’re dead.”
“would never plan on it.” quinn, trevor and i continue to talk for a bit before he has to go for his morning skate.
“should we call j?” trevor nods and i click on jack’s contact, facetiming him.
“hey sis, what’s up?”
“there’s uh, someone i want you to meet.” he gasps
“you have a boyfriend?” he gets excited and i look up at trevor and smile, nodding.
“cmon, who’s got my little sister cheesing?” i point the camera at trevor and jack gasps.
“i fucking knew it! i knew it!”
“how does everyone know?” trevor asks and jack and i laugh
“you both made it very obvious.” jack says “anyways, glad to know you’re both finally together. now i have to go. bye you two, don’t do anything gross!” he then hangs up and i set my phone on my nightstand, cuddling into trevor even more.
“the others can find out later. you’re warm and i don’t wanna move.” he laughs and i fall back asleep in record time.
it’s funny how a broken nose can bring together two people.

Favorite asian shows and movies I’ve seen so far, ranked in order of most to least tragic:
My Country: The New Age (kdrama) - compact period drama about a turbulent transition of power in medieval Korea. Childhood best friends turned enemies due to social inequality and interference from hidden players. If you believe the true romance is between Hwi and Huijae, I would like to introduce you to a Nigerian prince. Beautifully shot, lit, and costumed. The music is perfection (and available in spotify). Hands down the best fight choreography I’ve ever seen. Throwaway lines and small moments from earlier episodes come back to haunt you. Starcrossed soulmates try and fail to sever their bonds.
Song Lang (viet movie) - a movie about a (fictional) rising star of traditional vietnamese opera and a gruff debt-collector with his own personal ties to the artform. Incredibly well-crafted loveletter to vietnamese opera and 80s sai gon. Produced by Ngo Thanh Van (yes, Quynh from the Old Guard NTV). Honestly one of my fave queer movies ever, though the romance is only implied. Doesn’t have the same flavor of being made for the straight cis female gaze that chinese danmei do. Starcrossed first love that leaves a mark on the soul. My parents loved it.
Move to Heaven (kdrama) - even more compact contemporary drama about an autistic young man who loses his father. His deadbeat uncle moves in as his guardian, and shenanigans ensue. The episodes roughly follow a Monster of the Week format, each focusing on someone who has passed away and going through the things they’ve left behind in order to give the deceased a voice. Meanwhile the protagonists have to confront the loss they’ve experienced in their own lives. Warnings for some ableism that is addressed as the characters grow. A bittersweet, beautifully crafted story about love, grief, and closure. You will cry. Bring tissues.
The Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity (chinese movie) - folks, it’s gay. A giant evil snake is reborn and a young yin yang master has to join forces with a demon-hunter to stop it. The problem is Qingming is rumored to be the son of a fox demon, while Boya’s mother was murdered by a fox demon. Black/White lovers. Fan Gay and Flute Gay. Enemies to soulmates speedrun. A high fantasy chinese drama that doesn’t fall victim to trying to pass off a couple of scrawny prettyboys as martial arts masters (sorry, word of honor, but i could snap those boys like twigs).
Romance of the Tiger and the Rose (cdrama) - 24(?) episodes, ridiculous good fun about a scriptwriter who falls into her own story (yes, i know, just trust me on this one). Unfortunately her character is slated to die in the third episode, and she has to think on her feet to save herself. Murder husband absolutely adores his schemer wife. One questionable scene about midway through ep 19(?) that has its purpose but is definitely deeply uncomfortable and upsetting. You’ll know it when you see it, and you can skip 30 seconds and continue without any issues. Otherwise it is a wonderful commentary on gender roles, family bonds, and social norms.
BeLoved In House: I Do (taiwanese) - 12 half-length episodes—we do not talk about episode 13. Short and sweet, ridiculously trope-filled gay romance about a young executive who takes over as the art director of a small jewelry studio. He immediately makes an enemy of the head artist by implementing a very stupid rule: employees are forbidden from having romantic relationships. Oh, and they were roommates. If you find the secondary romance bland, forgettable, or uncomfy, no worries! They are almost entirely irrelevant to the plot and you can fast-forward through all of their scenes! Definitely is intended for a straight cis female audience but also has a very sincere message that love is love.

i noticed you've talked about gleerp before and i just wanted to say they're letting the mercedes player use madison bailey as a fc.
..... It’s 2021 and we’re really roleplaying pedophilic content ( I mean it, they’ve got 14 year olds having sex on their dash. ) but we’re also using a skinny little twig for one of two of the only plus size characters?
@gleerp, you do realize that Mercedes being a big girl is a huge part of her character, right? It’s not only a big part of her biography and why she’s in the Glee club aka a glee loser, but her experiences as a plus sized black woman have shaped her personality as well.
I know people are more than just their body type or size, but the writers for Glee really leaned in hard on her weight for this character. And that’s okay!! It’s okay to have a plus size character that has story arcs about her being plus size. Anyone that has ever been plus size will tell you that it is vitally important to who they are as a person because of the way it changes their life experiences. Mercedes was the big girl that nobody took seriously because she was big. That was her whole season one arc. So what on earth?????????? Honestly, I consider this fatphobic. You’re really that afraid to have a fat person on your dash??????????? That you decide to make the only plus sized main character smaller than even the skinny canon girls? I would also like to mention that there is colorism involved here too. Amber Riley and Mercedes Jones are very dark skinned, beautiful black women. So why is your accepted fc choice so light skinned? You’re probably white and unaware, but even within the POC community, colorism is incredibly hurtful. A current example is one BTS member saying that another BTS member looks like the N word when he gets a tan. The preference has always been for lighter skin, whether you’re POC or white. Skin bleaching kits exist to tell us that we need to be as light as possible. There are derogatory terms for darker skin colors. Let dark skinned characters stay dark skinned to maintain the representation. Let plus sized characters remain plus sized to maintain the representation.
THIS IS NOT MERCECEDES JONES. What you were looking for was a fat, black- reread that FAT BLACK celebrity with a darker skin tone.
Tumblr media
Here, let me help you. There are a ton of plus sized fcs available. As a reminder, since you clearly forgot who Mercedes Jones is, what you’re looking for is someone that looks like this:
Tumblr media
I’m disgusted, this is nasty. It’s honestly hard to believe that anyone would join an rp like that but we all know that there are a lot of secret pedos and fatphobic people out there. Especially in the grpc, unfortunately.
Next, you’re going to tell me that they have Unique Adams casted with Andy Biersack as the fc. (Kat Blaque is my fave face for her, just in case you were wondering) This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard in at least ten years. Admins allow bullshit like this and then wonder why nobody wants to deal with the grpc and the whole Glee cast and all Glee characters are on almost every single ban list for rps outside of our community. Do better.
Tumblr media
UPDATE: I FOUND MORE
Just a quick look at their acceptances and their masterlist and I am finding characters that are the wrong ethnicity! How fun! So we’re whitewashing at gleerp too. It’s really beginning to look like 2006 again as far as brain cells devoted to respecting other people and social decorum are concerned. A note to the admins, all Asians aren’t the same and/or interchangeable. Korean is not the same as Vietnamese is not the same as Japanese is not the same as Chinese. In addition, Mexican is not the same as Pilipino which is not the same as Puerto Rican which is not the same as Spanish and also not the same as Guatemalan. You can’t just interchange and swap out POC ethnicities or put POC of different ethnicities into bio families together for fun and say it’s okay because they’re still POC, that’s not how we work. Just a hot tip.

hey requesting a roommate matchup! im a sagitarius, enneagram type 4, slytherin house, and i kin shigaraki tomura from MHA. my favorite food is instant cup ramen :), i havent watched any films yet but least favorite anime is garden of words (its good i just didnt like it im sorry ) and math is my least fav. i can cook, but i dont normally. im a night owl, and im not particully messy but it can get out of hand. i draw all the time, n do stickers, etc. my aesthetic is dark academia ngl
Dear User,
congratulations, we have found you a potential roommate. We have throughly looked through your application and we hope you are happy with your result. Below this post are the details about them.
Yours Sincerely
The Accomodation Team
Tumblr media
Name: Tendou Satori
Birthday: 20th May (Gemini)
MBTI: ESTP
congrats my lovely you have this crackhead as your roommate
i take no responablity for any damage done to your place
only joking x
now seeing as your a sagitarius and he is a gemini you too make the chaotic duo, like nothing can stop you when you combine power
you: you don’t think we will get in trouble for this
tendou: not a chance
cut to semi scolding you
like that is your relationship
also he is a fellow slytherin so you too are always scheming something
ngl sometimes whenever Goshiki comes and visits he is petrified that something bad is going to happen to him
but it is apart of your guys charm, you are the slightly kooky neighbours that everyone secretly loves and hates at the same time
you guys are just badass (and i wish i could be apart of your gang)
now you mentionned that you kin Shigaraki (who is one my faves) so i can imagine that perhaps you may be interested in video games
if that is the case, well you have found your player 2
you too love to spend hours (mostly at night) playing all sorts of video games (including the MHA one as well)
you like to play as Shigaraki while Tendou plays as Toga because I feel he likes her character design (he likes cute girls ok)
sometimes you may order something like a chinese (or if you don’t like chinese your fave cuisine) and just play video games like half seriously
like Tendou will make like these little impressions of the characters and honestly you would be laughing your head off
you guys are too cute awww
now Tendou doesn’t mind that you choose not to cook, like it is canon that he has a very small appetite so he really doesn’t care that you live off ramen cups
he probably does the same
here is an idea tho, you guys try out all the different flavours of instant noodles and ramen cups and rate them
in your house there is a little chart with which brand and flavour has the top score
like the ultimate ramen cup
now by looking up the film Garden of Words it seems you are not a fan perhaps of the shoujo troupe
if that is correct then neither does tendou
you guys sit and binge classic shouen animes like naruto, MHA and Hxh
Tendou does a very good Hisoka impression
now seeing as you hate maths at first tendou tried to tutor you , y’know to be a good roommate
but it didn’t last too long, like you know those maths word problems where it is like Elizabeth has 10 sandwitches etc...
you too would start making fun of the characters in the word problems
elizabeth is such a greedy bitch
anyway i am getting side tracked
tendou is also a night owl actually i don’t think i have seen this kid ever sleep
like most of your fun endeavours take place at night it is when he is at his peak chaotic energy
Tendou thinks it is adorable that you draw your own stickers and definetely has them all stuck around the house and on it’s laptop
you know for advertising purposes
if you make him a sticker based on anime, bonus points if its fanart of him being in that said anime
he will marry you on the spot
definetely brags about your talent (and damn right he should)
Overall you have a cheerful, loud but a little bit of a sardonic roommate
Tumblr media
Other Potential Matches: Suna Rintarou and Akaashi Keiji
hiya! I hope you liked your matchup and thank you for your patience

pls tell us about the sad gay cultivator show/novel
Okay okay, so: the first thing you need to know is that this series is situated within a larger genre of Chinese media, which I will very broadly describe as: fantasy martial arts heroes use magic and sword fighting to protect common people from dangers such as ghosts/the undead, demons/other mythological creatures, and items possessed by strong dark energy. This is my first experience with the genre, so I can’t promise this is the most comprehensive or nuanced version (I’ll link to some more educated posts), but I think it’s enough to at least establish the setting of the world. In the case of this series, there are five major/noble clans of cultivators (the martial arts heroes), all with their own styles/philosophies of cultivation. (There are several smaller clans and also unaffiliated/‘rogue’ cultivators roaming around, too, but for the most part they’re not the focus here. Usually.)
((The other thing to understand about this series is that there are So Many Versions. It began life as a boy love novel [Mo Dao Zu Shi], and subsequently animated and graphic novel versions were created. I think there are audio dramas? And last year the live action version was released. Since that’s the one I’m most familiar with, that’s mostly what I’ll be referencing.))
So, broadly, the plot of the sad gay cultivators show is… well actually there are a lot of plots, but generally it can be summarized as: medieval Chinese fantasy political drama (very queer), not entirely told in chronological order. The series starts with a flashback in which we watch our main protagonist, Wei WuXian, die! It’s okay though, because in virtually the next scene we find out that 16 years later he’s brought back to life through not entirely clear circumstances. Shenanigans ensue, he reunites with his long lost love, adopts befriends the next generation of cultivators, runs into pretty much everyone he ever offended/hurt in his previous life, and solves a decades-long murder mystery while consequently clearing his name—oh, which was necessary, because he died reviled for his deeds in his first life, including developing his own, less-than-approved method of cultivation (demonic cultivation, i.e.: he used dead people/spirits to fight).
Before we get to see Wei WuXian redeem himself, though, we have to find out what exactly went so wrong the first time, which is why a good chunk of the live action episodes are dedicated to a flashback of the events that led to him dying after his life fell apart around him. (Don’t worry, you’ll definitely still cry when it happens, even though you saw it before!) Lots of political intrigue, lots of familial drama, plenty of tragedy! Really, what’s not to love?
Major players:
Wei WuXian, obviously
Lan WangJi, the other main protagonist and aforementioned long lost love
Jiang Cheng, Wei Wuxian’s adopted brother
Literally so many more guys, this is a huge, amazing ensemble cast I guarantee you’ll find a fave or three
Clans!
the Lan Clan: stoic from the outside, beautiful, better than you; so many rules tho; magic music
The Jiang clan: Wei Wuxian’s adopted family, motto of “attempt the impossible,” they have a rough time buddy, but at least the lotuses seems pretty?
The Jin clan: rich as sin, name literally means gold, pretty but not the best at social relationships
The Nie clan: actually kinda hard to describe in a pithy way, their ancestors were butchers???? They use big ass sabers instead of swords unless they’re Nie HuaiSang, in which case… would you like to borrow his porn? Or see his collection of fans?
The Wen clan: sun and fire motif, a liiiiiiiiiiittle bit… how do you say, mad with power for much of their screen time
Themes!
what does it mean to do the right thing? What does it cost?
What does it mean to trust someone and how far are you willing to extend that trust?
What is family?
More!!! It’s late and I’ve had alcohol!
Bonus incentives: literally everyone in this show is pretty. No, really, they’re gorgeous.

[about subbing.]
alright y’all sit tight and buckle up, i’ve held this in for three months now but today i saw a youtube comment demanding to know why it took so long for eng subs for a certain show to come out and i think some things should be made clear.
fan subbers are not obligated to do the subbing we do. we are people with our own lives who are busy with work and school and life. the time spent subbing takes away from our study time, our down time, or time better spent doing more productive things.
“but wait, surely it doesn’t take that long to sub a show? i see gifs on tumblr / translated transcriptions on twitter, so i know people are capable of translating things but nobody will sub the whole episode / it takes so long for eng subs to come out.”
it takes. so. much. time. in case you’re not familiar with the process (i know i wasn’t, before joining a subbing team), i’ll walk you through it with personal examples.
(1) obtaining the raw video:
content is often hosted on iqiyi, youku, tencent. unlike youtube, these platforms have little to no ‘fast’ ways to download the videos. for example, iqiyi uploads their episodes as .qsv files, which, due to their non-standard format, cannot be opened in any normal multimedia player and require the use of iqiyi's proprietary software. in order to decode the file and make it usable, downloaders have to find ccodes and ckeys, which takes time. to make it worse, these ccodes and ckeys change every few weeks, which means downloaders have to go on a hunt for them all over again.
even if you could find an online downloader for videos, video parsers such as this one often give you very little control over the quality of the video - most of the downloads end up looking like someone chewed it up and spit it out.
this means that whoever obtains the raw video has to use methods like coding or terminal just to get the hd file, which takes time and effort.
from here, the raw video goes to two people: the transcriber and the timer.
(2a) transcribing the video:
this is a step i skip when i am subbing alone or when i’m subbing in a team that are all chinese-speakers, but when i’m working in a team that has typesetters who don’t speak chinese, we have to provide a transcription along with our translation so that they can match the words on screen with the translations they put in. in some teams, there are members who only transcribe, but in smaller teams, translators have to do it ourselves.
transcribing takes time - it can take anywhere from half an hour to two hours for a five minute segment, depending on how used you are to typing in that language.
(2b) timing the video:
for me, this is The Most Time Consuming part of subbing - it’s the part i dread when subbing alone. it involves making sure your subs appear at the same time as the corresponding characters on screen, and often, if your subs appear even a couple of frames off, the entire sequence will look strange to the viewer. timing involves small adjustments made over and over again just so your subs look at least presentable.
it requires precision, which takes time. and it requires practice and being comfortable with the timing software - if you’re starting out with new software, you might take more than two hours to time a five minute segment.
even worse is when a video comes without chinese subtitles (rip all of us who ever had to sub these) - we don’t have a frame of reference and have to decide how to time by ourselves. we have to take into account sentence length and how fast viewers can read per second, how long a clause can be before viewers forget what was in the previous clause, and we have to make these decisions in tandem with how fast the people on screen are speaking. which takes time.
(3) translating the video:
i think this step is often what people reduce subbing to and is what most people are familiar with seeing, but i cannot stress this enough - it also takes time.
personally, i take an hour to clear five minutes worth of dialogue on a good day. and then i take additional time for the sfx captions. and then additional time to proof-read and make sure i didn’t mishear, misinterpret or mistranslate things. most of the time, interviews love using internet slang or gaming terms and for those of us who don’t game or spend most of our lives on weibo, it’s an extra step for us to search for the term, understand its meaning and the context in which it’s being used. which takes time.
when a video comes without chinese subtitles and the members on screen happen to Love Screaming Over Each Other... replaying the segment over and over again to try and hear what they’re saying takes time. and patience. and eardrum abilities.
in a team, it also involves proof-reading each other’s work. our translations team always proof-reads each other’s segments in case we catch something the others missed out on or mistranslated, or in case semantics are awkward and we have to restructure a sentence. i’m very, very lucky in that the subbing team i’m in have different strengths - one of us is better at chinese and explaining complex phrases, one of us is good at pragmatics and catching nuances and suggesting rephrases and one of us is good at semantics and making sure things are grammatically accurate. but sometimes teams are unbalanced and it takes extra effort to make sure things still turn out in the best quality possible.
in some cases, we can discuss one (1) word choice for a full ten minutes because there simply isn’t a phrase for it in english and we have to t/n it, or because multiple english words map to the same chinese word and choosing the wrong one will provide a wrong connotation. in other cases, we know that some scenes will be talked a lot about or giffed a lot by international fans, and we have to make sure that the translations have to be as accurate and as nuanced as possible so that nothing gets twisted. and in the worse case scenario, a wrong word choice can change a fan’s whole impression of a member.
(4) typesetting the video:
for dialogue subtitles, this involves finding a font that is readable by everyone and a style that will be visible against all backgrounds. it involves making sure they stay in the same place and are of the same style (all aligned left, a certain number of pixels from the bottom etc).
for sfx captions, this involves matching your english font to the chinese font used so the scene style isn’t incongruous and matching styles like outlines and shadows so that the colour scheme remains the same. in some cases, there is no space for the sfx translation, and typesetters have to blank out the original to make the translations visible. in many cases, they move, so typesetters have to animate the text, which takes extra effort.
for multiple-episode shows, typesetters have to make sure that the styling remains consistent and visible in all settings, which make the thought given to these choices all the more important.
in some teams, typesetters don’t speak chinese, and have to refer to transcriptions and corresponding translations to typeset correctly. this takes time. in the cases where the original video comes without chinese subtitles, typesetters have to decide in which order the noise and mayhem should appear on screen. this takes time.
and in the first place, this assumes that you have the software to do hard-subs - something not all of us have.
(5) encoding and posting the video:
this step takes the least effort but it still needs So Much Time - converting the aegisubs or premiere pro file into an .mp4 requires a media encoder, and adobe media encoder more or less takes three hours to encode a three hour episode. sometimes, it exports as an .mov and you have to handbrake it to get it to an .mp4 file, which takes extra time.
uploading it on youtube also takes time - it takes an hour to get a two-hour video uploaded, and it takes another few hours for it to process so that you can publish it in 1080p.
some of our laptops don’t have enough processing power to go through a three hour video - even encoding a half-hour episode can slow down our laptops so much they’re pretty much useless until it’s done. some of us even don’t have a media encoder on our laptops and have to run to computer labs to get it encoded. and if the closest one is on campus twenty minutes away and it’s snowing outside? good luck.
people who gif casually or translate in blocks of text on twitter don’t have to deal with steps (2), (4) and (5), and that’s where the difference lies - even if they’re capable of translating things, the sheer amount of effort and time it takes can deter people from trying.
in addition, most of the time, the content we sub is copyrighted so we can’t even monetise the eng subs - we get nothing out of subbing.
the reason why we do it anyway is because we love the show or the people on the show and want to share that with an international audience. we’re fans and for some of us, that’s justification enough to put in the time and effort needed to get more love and attention for our faves.
and that’s why we appreciate it when people ask us, “hi, would you be interested in subbing this show?” most of these requests are polite and include an “only if you want to” add-on (which frees us from the obligation to agree), and it lets us know that you’re following our faves and lets us know what kind of content you’re interested in. most of the time, most of us don’t even need a ‘thank you’ in the comments (although they are very much appreciated), because if we see comments laughing over a certain member’s actions, it means someone else is loving our faves too and to me, it makes the effort worth it.
i understand people asking, “why does it take so long to sub?” out of curiosity, because before i joined my subbing teams, i knew nothing about the process. but going, “why is it taking so long to sub?” is different, and demanding that a show be subbed when it takes us ten hours of work to let you enjoy a twenty minute video? that’s not fair.
tl;dr: don’t underestimate the amount of effort it takes to sub a show. subbers have their own lives and are not obligated to work on your schedule.
if you’re still thinking about demanding subs faster, consider joining the subs team. otherwise, shut up and enjoy the fact that fans are putting in time and effort for your entertainment for free.

There’s a bunch of new questions in my inbox that I don’t think I can answer without ranting and being very condescending. Below are some
“Will you buy Jessica's book”
That’s extremely unlikely. First off because I basically only ever read various types of research papers and legal documents. Secondly because I doubt she’s able to understand enough of the bigger picture and has enough self-reflection to write something I’d find meaningful. Maybe she can, but I doubt it.
“Based on those RIAJ reports, will streaming take over Japan like it did with the rest of the world?”
I’d say it already has since long ago, at least among younger people. As I’ve ranted about before, the physical market in Japan is almost 100% about idols making fans buy CDs for other reasons than music. And it’s particularly held up by how idols hold huge amounts of events to which fans get “free tickets” if they buy CDs.
“You said that bgs have better physical sales because of fangirls, then why bigbang is not selling millions like exo and bts?”
Because no matter how stupid they are, most of BIGBANG’s fangirls are at least a lot older than EXO and BTS fangirls and therefor won’t spend their hard earned money on something so ridiculously dumb as buying CDs.
The real question you should ask is: Why are hordes of international girls who don’t speak Korean and who don’t have a CD-player buying millions of CDs from Korea???
And the answer to that is in how the big young international kpop following basically is like some huge retarded online cult that lives detached from reality and doesn’t care about facts, and instead basically just makes up whatever stuff they want to believe in. Obviously record labels are fueling this behavior as they make a ton of money from how fans spend money on dumb things. But it’s really fascinating how it’s largely the fans themselves who have created this absurd behavior.
“How is it possible that a girl group like Blackpink who sold 200k+ copies of their mini album with no fan signs, billions of views on yt, tons of exposure, a successful world tour and 20k attendance at their Seoul concerts can't even sell out their fan meeting?”
Again, you’re asking the wrong question. BLACKPINK is basically just some girls dancing to 5 autotuned Teddy-songs. I understand if lots of people find the songs to be awesome. But it’s 5 songs. And basically anybody could go up on stage and dance to them. So why would anyone pay for tickets to a BLACKPINK performance? The turn-out for their latest Korean concert seems like a fair turn-out reflecting how many people that logically should want to pay to see BLACKPINK (and as mentioned before: much of the audience at their previous Seoul concert had been given free tickets by companies sponsoring the event, and 20k seems exaggerated too for that matter).
So the real question you should ask is: “Why are hordes of international kpop fans paying money to see BLACKPINK dancing to some songs?” And of course the answer is again in how this international kpop following basically is an online cult.
“Do you know the difference between apple music and iTunes and which do I have to look at to know how a group is doing.”
Yes of course. ‘iTunes’ is Apple’s old download service where you purchase downloads. ‘Apple Music’ is Apple’s new streaming service where you pay a monthly subscription and then get to stream whatever music you want to listen to, exactly like Spotify (it just took them 7 years to copy Spotify).
Since no normal human would pay to purchase a download from iTunes, iTunes is completely irrelevant. Spotify and Apple Music are the charts you need to look at if you want to know what music people are listening to.
The only ones who buy downloads on iTunes are idiot fans who for some reason have convinced themselves that they must waste their money to make their faves top iTunes. And frankly, buying downloads from iTunes (or QQ etc) is even way more stupid than buying CDs from Korea. At least fangirls buying CDs could claim that they want the photobooks and cards in the CD package. The idiots that buy downloads from iTunes are just pissing away their money. Don’t even get me started on all the Chinese fans who uses VPNs to make their faves top the US iTunes chart.
“How big are the chances that super m will succeed in u.s.?”
The question is strange. The members already have lots of fans. From the perspective of Capital Records it seems a very simple and low-risk project to make money from their already existing fans buying shit.
And from the perspective of the members it seems like a good opportunity to get great US/worldwide promotions/exposure that will help them make more money from concerts and CF deals now and in the future.
As for if they could become actually mainstream music that people listen to, the answer is of course no.
“Does the labels in the west work the same shaddy and scheme ways as most korean labels/agencies? Is it better to no sign to a label and just stay independent and probably make more money given the bigger and more developed music markets?”
The western companies are of course just as ‘shady’ in many aspects, but your question is strange. Record labels, songwriters and performing artists all live in symbiosis.
Record labels make money by marketing and selling music.
Songwriters make money not only by royalties on music sales through record labels, but also from how much their songs are played in concerts, on TV, on radio, in clubs, at sport events, in karaoke bars, etc etc.
Performing artists mostly make money not from royalties on music sales, but by being paid to perform live at concerts and other events and by being paid for various types of CF/endorsement deals.
They all need each other. And if you’re a performing artists with ambitions to make it really big and get paid lots, it makes no sense to decline all the promotion/marketing you’d get by signing with a big record label early in your career. And particularly if you’re not also an awesome songwriter, because then you’ll need the help of some good A&R people to get you suitable songs.
The ‘problems’ of the idol industry (and this of course doesn’t just go for Korea, but even more so for Japan and China, and also applies to many of the big US/UK boygroups decades ago) is especially manifested in how idols are made to do endless promotions and free events to drive music sales (which the record labels make huge money from) instead of doing paid events (which the performing artists would make huge money from).
“It's teddy the richest producer in kpop? Because I always though he probably get paid better than most kpop idols.”
Again: the top performing artists make huge money from live performances and commercial deals, much more than anybody makes from songwriting or music sales. But performing artists who don’t make it big enough make absolutely zero money if they can’t get paid more for performances than what they’d have to spend on outfits/makeup/travel/assistants etc.
Teddy is indeed one of the Koreans who make most money from songwriting nowadays. But songwriting is very different to any normal jobs. Your income is passive royalties from how much your songs are used. Some songs continue to be used for a very long time and all over the world. Take for example the songwriting for ABBA. They continue to make lots of money today from 40-50 year old songs because they are still being used lots on radio, in TV, in musicals and with covers in concerts etc. There are obviously a lot of old Korean songwriters who have a huge catalogue of songs they’ve written that continue to make them money every year.
“Will the hallyu ban in China ever be lifted?”
Who knows. China being China. They’re just altogether weird with their one-party-state ruling everything but any horrible individual opportunistic capitalist behavior seems completely OK as long as you support the party-state enough.
“Do bgs members ever stop being fuckboys?”
It would probably be good for you to realize that all men by nature more or less has a biological instinct that says “if there’s a hole, then I should plug it”. Their actions are rather a result of opportunities and consequences. Most male pop-stars and actors have more or less endless opportunities and face no consequences.

Official Summary: As the grandmaster who founded demonic cultivation, Wei WuXian roamed the world in his wanton ways, hated by millions for the chaos he created. In the end, he was backstabbed by his dearest shidi and killed by powerful clans that combined to overpower him.He incarnates into the body of a lunatic who was abandoned by his clan and is later, unwillingly, taken away by a famous cultivator among the sects—Lan WangJi, his archenemy. This marks the start of a thrilling yet hilarious journey of attacking monsters, solving mysteries, and raising children. From the mutual flirtation along the way, Wei WuXian slowly realizes that Lan WangJi, a seemingly haughty and indifferent poker-face, holds more feelings for Wei WuXian than he is letting on…
My Thoughts: First chinese novel I stumbled upon and I fell in love with. To me everything about this story is absolutely perfect, from characters, to plot, romance, mystery and worldbuilding...everything was so unique and beautiful. And the translation group Exiled Rebels does an excellent job portraying it in english as best they can. There are some hurdles tho: for example if you haven’t read any chinese novels before you have to adjust to terminology a lot- especially names (everyone has like three names). So if you’re like me who stumbled into it with no idea what expect you’ll probably get confused a lot but if you stick out you’ll get used to it and rereading the first few chapters later after adjusting is probably a good tip. Unlike other BL/Yaoi stories that I’ve seen (mostly japanese manga) the romance actually blends and makes sense; and not fetishized or forced, even if you don’t like the genre it won’t get in the way of the story (especially with china’s censorship).
   2.  The Legend of the Sun Knight
Tumblr media
Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Mystery  Other Unofficial Tags: Shameless Protagonist, Anti-Hero Protagonist, Strategy, Hilarious interactions, War, Neocromancy, Leader, Loyalty, Elemental Magic, Black-Bellied Protagonist, Demons, Sarcasm abound
Status: Complete  Other things: Manga-(Discontinued?)
Official Summary: I am a knight. To be precise, I am the Church of the God of Light’s Sun Knight. The Church of the God of Light worships and serves the God of Light, and theirs’ is one of the three largest religions on this continent. As the whole continent knows, the Church of the God of Light has the Twelve Holy Knights, and each one has his own unique personality and features. To be the Sun Knight is to have shining golden hair, sky blue eyes, a compassionate nature, and a brilliant smile.“The benevolent God of Light will forgive your sins.”I must have said that line at least a million times in my time as the Sun Knight. However, the greatest wish in my life is to be able to stand before the entire continent and roar, “Damn your ‘the whole continent knows’! This Sun Knight just doesn’t feel like smiling! I just don’t want to forgive these human trashes! I just want to pepper my sentences with ‘f***’!”Unfortunately, even to this day, I continue to wear a smile as I say, “The benevolent God of Light will forgive your sins.”
My Thoughts: Actually read this years ago (5-6?), and I always thought it was a japanese novel but I guess it isn't(?)-anyways not important. This story was absolutely hilarious, you won’t meet a more entertaining guy.  The contrast between how he’s forced to act as the leader of the religion- belevont, kind, smiling, pure- is the total opposite of his real personality so much so that it gave a shock (of pure delight) cuz of the drastic inner and outer faces. There’s 12 knights in total ,each is totally unique and you get introduced to them super fast. There is different conflicts that occur, that fall on Grisia’s ( the mc) shoulder to solve as he is the leader and while it starts off lighthearted, in the end some serious stuff occurs. This is a very warm hearted story about brotherhood i think overall. (Also heard that Grisia falls into the legendary trinity of shameless protagonist: Wei Wuxian from GDC is one of them and I agree lol). Very unique storytelling, it twists all kinds of classic tropes and plays with them, overall a very fun read.
   3. Eight Treasures Trousseau
Tumblr media
Genre: Historical, Josei, Romance, Drama Other Unofficial Tags: Arranged Marriage, Calm/Lazy Protagonist, Ambitious ML, Politics, Power Couple, Royalty, Doting Love Interest, Beautiful Couple
Status: Complete
Official Summary: Everyone in the City of Jing thinks that bestowment of marriage between Xian Junwang and the daughter of the Yi’an Marquis House is to insert a fresh flower into manure.Xian Junwang was that fresh flower and the di daughter of Yi’an Marquis House was that manure that was not liked. It is said that what is heard is false, seeing is believing. Who knows what the truth really is?
My Thoughts: A really nice story set in Ancient China, and in my opinion the best one written. The story has both the female lead and male lead on pretty equal field in terms of their relationship, you won’t see any weak-willed person in this couple. This story also portrayed realistically the difficulties of living in Ancient China as a woman, by showing us many different kinds of people. The villains make you feel complicated emotions even when you hate them, which shows you great storytelling. No-one is excessively stupid and the mc is just stomping over them with her “cleverness” in this story which I liked. The MC is actually very lazy and this gave the story a very relaxed feel, which lead to time just flying by. I’ve just recently reread it which rare for me to do.
   4.  A Slight Smile is Very Charming  -Side Stories
Tumblr media
Genre: Romance, Comedy,Josei,School Life, Slice of Life   Other Unofficial Tags: MMORPG, Gamers, College/University, Power Couple, Beautiful Female Lead, Handsome Male Lead, Smart Couple
Status: Complete
Other things: Adapted to a drama: Love 020
Official Summary:What is it that makes a man fall in love with a woman at first sight? Appearance? Aura? Wealth? NO, when campus prince and gaming expert, student Xiao Nai first saw Bei Wei Wei, what made him fall in love was not her extraordinary beauty; but her slim and slender fingers that were flying across the keyboard and her calm and composed manner!!! Embarrassing, no?At the same time, gaming expert Bei Wei Wei was on the computer methodically commanding a guild war, and won a perfect and glorious victory despite being at a disadvantage; completely unaware of the fact that cupid is nearby.Soon after basketball player; swimmer; all-around excellent student; and game company president, Xiao Nai, uses tactics both on- and offline to capture this beauty’s heart. Therefore this romance slowly bloomed.
My Thoughts: This is a very quick, lighthearted story. It gets straight to the point with no drama, if you just want a nice, quick romance to read then I highly recommend. When I was debating whether to read it or not, one of the reviewers on novelupdates said it had a drama, and I usually hate drama’s but they recommended it, so I went to check it out before I started reading and I surprisingly loved it. I usually hate cheesy but they managed to pull it off real well, so I was squealing and cringing at the same time (lol), it’s probably because the actors are really good looking so you can’t help but let it slide. The drama added some drama not a lot but some to the story. When I went back and read the novel I realized how quick it was compared to the drama. I recommended both honestly, if you’re looking for some fun.
   5. Rebirth of a SuperModel
Tumblr media
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance, Slice of Life, Yaoi  Other Unofficial Tags: ShowBiz, Transmigration, Black-Belly Protagonist, Love Interest Falls First, Clever Couple, Talented Couple, Power Couple, Celebrities, Acting, Media
Status: Complete
Official Summary: In his past life, Ming Yu struggled in the European and United States fashion circles, eventually becoming the well deserved king of the catwalk. After dying from a serious illness and being reborn, Ming Yu was surprised to find: Huaxia stars shone brightly, there were successful names everywhere! In this better world, on a more vigorous and brilliant stage, the first supermodel tries to reproduce the glory of another world! Interviewer: May I ask Mr Xi, this year Ming Yu said he would surpass you. As the number one global supermodel, what is your opinion on this? Xi Ze: This is a bad question. My family has very strict rules. Home Owner Ming Yu: …….  The pair of black-hearted husbands will sweep the fashion industry, conquering the world.
My Thoughts: A really fresh story, I never got bored. It focuses more on the MC and his rise as a supermodel, and sprinkles in the romance with ML. While reading it (before it got completed), it felt like me and other readers were cheering on the MC as fans as well, which was a lot of fun. I’ve read some other showbiz transmigration stories but I got annoyed or bored real fast, this one I found real fun, no matter how many days until the next chapter you could pick it up and feel happy. Some things people might not like: there a lot of photoshoot scenes (he is a model) so some might get tired of that, but they go by pretty quick. While MC was the number one model in his old world, it doesn’t make him OP, he has his own flaws and he grows a lot which makes him more interesting.
   6.     Sansheng, Wangchuan Wu Shang
Tumblr media
Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Josei, Romance, Supernatural, Tragedy   Other Unofficial Tags: Goddess, Gods, Mythology, Heavenly Tribulations, Honest Protagonist, Protagonist loyal to Love Interest, Reincarnation, Beautiful Couple
Status: Complete
Official Summary:  This is a story that follows the courtship between a stone from Hell and a god from Heaven that begins in the underworld and spans for three lifetimes in the mortal realm.
My Thoughts: Honestly was suprised how much I liked it. Despite the MC being naive, and ready to throw it all away for the ML, you can’t hate her. This a very fast story (about 15 chapter and 3 bonus stories), which adds to its charm. If it was longer I might have not liked it as much. There are overwhelmingly positive reviews about this story on novel updates which made me give this story a chance and I agree with them. If you like romance definitely check this out.
    6.  The Earth is Online
Tumblr media
Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama, Psychological, Sci-Fi, Supernatural, Shounen Ai/Yaoi   Other Unofficial Tags: Game Elements, Thriller,  Survival Game, Special Abilities, Calm Protagonist, Clever Protagonist, Slow Romance, Modern Day
Status: Complete
Official Summary: Six months ago, tens of thousands of black phantom towers appeared all over the world, floating above the cities. Chemists, physicists, religious people… all of them could do nothing.Six months later, people became used to the towers and no longer paid them attention. One day, Tang Mo saw a flying insect crash into it instead of going through it. The next day, a sharp and clear child-like voice issued an announcement to all humans. “Ding dong! November 15th, 2017. The earth is online.”  The black tower’s three iron-clad rules: 1. Everything is explained by the black tower. 2. 6 o’clock to 18 o’clock is the game time. 3. All players, please strive to attack the tower.
My Thoughts: You won’t find a story more unique than this. I doubt there’s anything similar to this story. Something that might come close might be the manga Tomodachi Game, but that's only the doing games for survival bit. I don’t know how the author came up with this, the games are so smart, that you may feel like you’re getting smarter by the end of it or that you’re IQ is hopelessly low. And it’s not the fact that rules are ridiculous and don't follow logic either, when the answers are revealed they make sense.. Honestly reading this I’m glad something like (probably ;) ) won’t happen because I doubt I would survive. I have a real admiration for the author for coming up with this. The story is good at keeping you wary and on edge that something is going to happen at any moment. Some issues?: The romance was so so slow burning that it became a background character, and there wasn’t a big payoff moment like the author gave us this weird analogy when they finally did the deed, that I was burning with indignation, just thinking about it pisses me off, but it probably has to do with the censorship in china. Also there were too much straight explanations that kinda got annoying but could be ignored. I think with how well the author set up the survival element that you could ignore the flaws pretty quickly. So glad I found this novel.
   7.  Quickly Wear the Face of the Devil - Side Stories
Tumblr media
Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi, Yaoi Other Unofficial Tags: Acting, Apocalypse, Artificial Intelligence, Episodic, Mob Protagonist, System, Virtual Reality, Cunning Protagonist, Devoted Love Interest, Possessive Characters, Hacker
Status: Complete
Official Summary: A top hacker was chosen by the Lord God to be reborn into countless worlds, always as an expendable villain. With no free will, every world became a dead end. Every one of his lives ended tragically. Finally, after wresting control of the Villain System, this ace hacker decided to enact revenge. Even if his very bones were rotten, he’d choose to occupy the very heights of morality, if only on the surface. Thus, he would change his fate as an abused slag.
My Thoughts: If you’re on novelupdates you’ll hear about this story at some point, it has become infamous on the site. And for good reason, this is the top written System transmigration into multiple world stories, or just system stories. There a multiple worlds and each one has it’s own flavor you’ll definitely have your favorites. It’s a very fun story to read and if you’re new to system stories like I was when I read this, you’ll inevitably compare all others to this one.
    8.  The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage
Tumblr media
Genre: Historical, Josei, Martial Arts, Mature, Romance Other Unofficial Tags: Betrayal, Politics, Military, Royalty, Scheming, Revenge, Beautiful Female Lead, Handsome Male Lead, Cunning Couple, Slow Romance
Status: Ongoing
Official Summary:  Shen Miao, the Di daughter of a military lineage, pure, amiable, quiet and yielding, foolishly in love with Prince Ding, threw herself into the role of a wife. After assisting her husband for six years, she finally became the mother of the world (Empress). She accompanied him to fight for the country, flourished the country’s territory, took risks to become a hostage in another country. When she returned five years later, there was no place for her in the Inner Palace. The beauty in his arms smiled brightly, “Older sister, the country is stabilized so, you should retire.”Her daughter met with a violent death and her son the Crown Prince was deposed. Her Shen family who sacrificed themselves for the country and the Emperor, not a single one of them were lucky enough to escape. With the change of one dynasty, everything was overturned. Her clan perished and she had to mourn for her children.Shen Miao never thought that being a married couple who have gone through trials and tribulations and mutually assisted each other was just a stage joke to him! He said, “Seeing that you have followed Zhen for twenty years, Zhen will grant you an intact corpse. You should thank this kindness.”Under the three Chi (1 chi = 1/3 meter) of white silk, Shen Miao made a malicious vow: In the time to come, she will take part in each and everyone’s end!Upon rebirth, she returned to the time when she was fourteen, when the tragedy had yet to occur, her family was still alive and she was still the pure, amiable, quiet and yielding Di daughter of a military lineage. Relatives hiding a black heart, Elder and younger (female) cousins are ruthless and malicious, the new Yiniang is like a tiger watching its prey and the disreputable man who wants to repeat the events? Her family must be protected, the huge enmity must be avenged, the Imperial seat of the country must also be a part of the trophy. In this lifetime, let’s see who can beat the others!
My Thoughts: I’ve tired to read numerous novels with the reincarnating to get revenge trope and I’ve never been able to complete them for variety of reasons but ultimately it’s because they end up sucking. This novel however is like a ray of light for this trope. Whatever way you think she’s gonna resolve something you’ll never guess right. I’m always pleasantly suprised. That’s something I can say for the whole novel it’s always surprising even with the current chapters with story almost at a close we readers just got shocked yet again. You’ll definitely experience a variety of emotions watching the story unfold, right now I’m pulling a napkin between my teeth (please author put us out of this misery already T.T). I doubt you’ll be disappointed.
Great:
Everyone Thinks that I Like Him
Tumblr media
Genre: Comedy, Romance, School Life, Shounen Ai/Yaoi  Other Unofficial Tags: Uni, Dense Protagonist, Slow Romance
Status: Complete
Official Summary: From infancy to maturity, what Ye Zhou dislikes the most was “two”.The reasons were: he was ranked second at home, he had been forever ranked second at school, no matter how diligently he worked and tried, he couldn’t shake off that “second” curse. What was more exasperating was that, at University, not only was he ranked second, but even his appearance that he was proud of had to be classified as second best! Why can’t I obtain the first place! The eternal second will rise! Then, Ye Zhou, after his vigorous efforts finally rises and the result was… the first became his boyfriend. This is the story of a man who has been forced to be “second” and how he became the first, most popular.Protagonists: Ye Zhou, Shang Jin.
My Thoughts: Cute, Fluffy, Funny. As you can see there is no drama tag so if you’re looking for an explosive story this is not it. But it is a very realistic story especially in regards to the acceptance of the couple how it differs for the younger generation vs. the older generation. The story is very natural and the characters believable. If you a cute story this is it.
    2.  Empress with no Virtue
Tumblr media
Genre: Adult, Comedy, Drama, Josei, Mature, Romance, Smut Other Unofficial Tags: Arranged Marriage, Bickering Couple, Politics, Misunderstandings, Politics, Royalty, Imperial Harem, Power Couple,
Status: Complete
Official Summary:  The free-spirited and brutally honest Ye Zhen Zhen was unwillingly chosen as Empress to the playboy Emperor Ji Wu Jiu. Their very first wedding night, she kicked the Emperor down from their bed and he sought out his concubine instead. This completely disastrous start was only the beginning of their eventful life together.
My Thoughts: Although not especially memorable, I enjoyed reading it. It was fun watching the couple act petty to one another. Honestly their relationship reminded me of boys pulling on pigtails to get the attention of their crush. There are a lot of funny and fluffy interactions, made for a fun read.

At the moment it’s mostly wrestling Last thing I googled: It was either Aleister Black speaking Dutch or what does (insert Dutch word here) mean? Do I have other blogs: Yeah, or at least I did. A lot of them are super old abandoned rp accounts and maybe like one abandoned edit account Do I get asks: Every now and then. I’m not that special to warrant asks Why did I choose my URL: It was before Wreck It Ralph came out and I really wanted a cool one word blog title. I originally wanted Vanellope but that was taken so I took Vonschweetz instead because I also think any name with Von in it sounds cool (though I have a hard time remembering it) Following: 735 (but I really should like unfollow a bunch of super old shit) Followers: 779 (Holy shit I have THAT MUCH?! I couldn’t even fathom having more than 100 after my first few years being on this site. Holy shit. Thanks to whoever was crazy enough to follow me that like means a lot to a nobody like me)
I’m supposed to tag people but once again I’m lazy so like... nah. If you wanna do it go for it. I’m not your mother.

Do you have any cdrama suggestions for a baby beginner? I think Empress of China is the most famous one I’ve heard of but I’m curious about others too!
B-baby beginner? No, my friend, when it comes to cdrama, we simply throw you into the pit…
Just kidding! Although, for a myriad of reasons, being a Chinese drama fan outside of Asia without a hold of the language is admittedly rather difficult (so to the “international” cdrama fandom: you guys rock!).
Unfortunately, your answer did not really help me narrow down my answer after all. I believe Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, your recent fave, is very romance-centric, but I feel like everyone tends to vacillate in their mood, preferring super romantic escapism one minute and demanding tight storytelling the next. Anyway, I’ll stop rambling and actually get to the point:
personal recs, in general*
I just couldn’t really “categorize” these?
peace hotel (2018): currently in the midst of watching this still, but I’m really enjoying this! honestly. especially with how the female chars (most of the chars are written.) it’s this mix between super suspenseful espionage and really cathartic humor. the plot twists are also so !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
let’s shake it! (2017): alien crashlands to the tang dynasty! it’s super cute and quirky, but there’s also a strong, coherent plot and some angst in the latter parts. definitely one of my faves of last year, though it’s punny sense of humor doesn’t always get through. it’s also very appreciatively meta ;) the subs apparently aren’t complete, as my friend complained to me, but I personally find the language real simple
medical examiner dr. qin (2016): the interactions between the crime-solving trio are gold. also, like the only modern show here?? (as you can tell, I am really mostly a period show watcher.)
go princess go (2015-16): it’s really low-budget and cracky, but trust me, there’s a reason it went viral. zhang tian ai does feel like the saving grace a lot of the time though, and I didn’t exactly give it a high score, but it just might be your thing. who knows?
nirvana in fire (2015): i don’t think it’s the best c-drama ever, unlike a lot of people on this site, but it’s still a very solid show. I also find it a lot more shoujo than most fans—it’s really not just a revenge-political drama—but when it was emotionally gripping, boy, it was emotionally gripping.
wuxin: the monster killer (2015): technically only season 1—I have yet to see s2—but weirdly enough, I found the poignant ending especially fitting. just assume from the title? yue qiluo is one of the more interesting villains out there, and gosh I just adore yueya so much
bu bu jing xin (2011): extremely poignant, complex look into polymagy/patriarchy during the qing dynasty from the lens of time-traveller zhang xiao who takes the identity of court lady ruoxi. even if you don’t ship any of the romances, it is so worth it for pretty much everything else. but if you do, obviously also an extremely heart-wrenching watch. a lot of people’s first cdrama.
schemes of a beauty (2010): lots of spying, secret chambers, poison, women control the men.
*I would want to recommend The Legend of Zhen Huan and The Glory Of Tang Dynasty, but they’re 76 episodes and 92 episodes long, respectively. Content-wise, it’s also stuff that requires lots of trigger warnings, and overall just not for the “baby beginner”. Battle of Changsha is definitely shorter, and a definite recommendation, but also just not for the “baby beginner.”
no dubbing
(Peace Hotel, Battle of Changsha, NiF, Medical Examiner Dr. Qin)
the advisors’ alliance (2017) + growling tiger, roaring dragon (2017-18): a mix of no dubbing and some dubbing. it’s a pretty creative to take the viewpoint of sima yi in this three kingdoms historical piece. I feel that it’s rather accessible to viewers, honestly, and the production values are great on this one.
nothing gold can stay (2017): only 4 eps in—it’s very solid so far (74 eps though, but I would say quite mainstream and easy to watch)
ten miles of spring wind can’t compare to you (2017): do I really want to rec this though? in the end, I really did wish I had someone to vent about this to and discuss with about, because in a lot of ways this really did give lots of food for thought. let’s just say that our three main chars are deliberately rather fatally flawed…and I still feel rather ambivalent about how to feel about this. (the first 10-15 eps are super cute, meta, adorable but also with great sexual tension and then it sort of goes to melodrama but anyway…) you could at least practice your chinese? it is harder than the average modern cdrama, given how pretentious qiu shui can get
shoujo period romances
We all have a soft spot for these :’)
sound of the desert (2014): just yesterday, there was quite a lot of discourse on this show on my dash, interestingly. female lead xin yue (liu shi shi) is raised by a wolf pack, though she eventually enters the capital city sometime during the han dynasty. she does at first fall for a crippled, broody flute player played by hu ge (imo one of his more lackluster roles) but it’s her chemistry with HAWT general wei wuji (eddie peng
female prime minister/legend of lu zhen (2013): again, freakishly sizzling chemistry. it focuses more on lu zhen rising up the ranks as lower-level female ministers, but mostly still very very romance-centric. (the otp falling-out in the last 10 eps or so was kind of stupid, I will admit, and also 200% all on gao zhan but it had such a strong addictive quality to it.)
gong/jade palace lockheart (2011): I haven’t seen Boys Over Flowers/the Japanese original/any official remakes of whatever that is, but a lot of people have called it Boys Over Flowers + modern girl time travels to the Qing Dynasty + 9-prince succession conflict during Kangxi’s reign. it was rather stupid and petty at times, but it’s more comedic and the romance is super addicting. I don’t care about the half-bald Qing queues at all, and this is actually one of the only roles that I’ve found Feng Shaofeng attractive in. (yes, it is possible to love bbjx and enjoy this)
Oh yeah, and all these end all happily and fairytale-like. None of the above would qualify as my “faves” at all, but all are very accessible to someone unfamiliar with cdrama and love the Romance and the Pretty.
others (I found rather lackluster or dropped): Perfect Couple, The Eternal Love (very popular among international audiences, but not for me), General and I, Oh My General
wuxias/xianxias
This is just going to be an embarrassing amount of childhood nostalgia. Like, literally, with the exception of the first one, I watched all of these in elementary school, with varying amounts of rewatching in between. The recent wuxias and xianxias just haven’t been to my liking. (I could get into how NiF takes lots of wuxia elements but I would just confuse you a lot so, strictly on the more fantasy/action side of things here.) I simply haven’t watched Eternal Love/Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (very, very popular) at all. I’m sorry.
vigilantes in masks/strange hero yi zhi mei (2011): I believe the international equivalent is “Iljimae”? It’s like Robin Hood, sort of, but mostly Liu Shi Shi’s Yan Sanniang is so amazing here.
chinese paladin 3 (2009)
return of the condor heroes (2006)
chinese paladin (2005)
lotus lantern (2005)
also 武林外传, which is 80 eps, but kind of more like a wuxia sitcom way back in the day. there’s in-show ppls, tons of modern references, etc. and also like lots of satire/social commentary. I did a rewatch (of brief clips ofc, I don’t have that much time) recently, and realized I missed so much when I watched it with the family back then. (I’m kind of embarrassed about the more lewd references…lol…)
*line break*
Whew! Anyway, the takeaway is, there is a lot of stuff to choose from, and I definitely left out a lot of stuff. There’s also a lot of modern cdramas. This answer might clarify about those shows.
(that being said, I really personally would not recommend empress of china. I mean, aside from 96 eps, just 2 eps in I could tell it was going to be an unsubstantial mess >_

Favourite kind of flower? One place you’ve always wanted to visit? Absolute least favourite food? How many cats is the ideal number of cats? Favourite type of ambient sounds? How did you lose your first tooth? Is there any style of art that you’ve never tried but have always wanted to? Favourite class you’ve taken? Favourite moment from any of the d&d campaigns you’ve played in? Feel free to only answer some of these or even none of them! Just trying to throw some distractions your way :)
Thank you Teary, you’re good people. ;;
Favorite flower?
Roses. I’m cliche, but also particular. I like the breeds that look like Hybrid Tea Roses and some of the Grandiflora Roses (this is what Teleflora tells me). I also have a more recent love of chrysanthemums and spider lillies.
One place you’ve always wanted to visit?
Venice!! This will not surprise any of my players from the one-shot this weekend lmao.
Absolute least favourite food?
I refuse to touch mushrooms- but I’m not sure if that’s my absolute least fave.
How many cats is the ideal number of cats?
I think 2 is probably a good number, but I think 3 would be alright too.
Favourite type of ambient sounds?
Heavy, heavy rainfall and thunder, and fireplaces.
How did you lose your first tooth?
I haven’t the faintest, honestly. I don’t remember how I lost any of my teeth, to be perfectly honest. I do, however, remember almost cracking one of my adult front teeth in half and I still kind of vaguely worry it’s actually going to pop off one of these days.
Is there any style of art that you’ve never tried but have always wanted to?
Very wispy, elaborate drawings- ala Yoshitaka Amano. My lines tend to be very heavy handed and very direct when I do them, so it’s a style I’ve avoided. I also like certain hyper-realism, but I haven’t attempted them since I’m still working at a semblance of semi-realism lmao. I’m also considering trying my hand at some Baroque-era painting for reasons.
Favourite class you’ve taken?
Any figure drawing class. Sociology of Gender. That Gender/Linguistics class I had. Jewelry making. Theater of Fantasy (in which there was a Chinese Opera). I’ve had a lot of neat classes.
Favourite moment from any of the d&d campaigns you’ve played in?
Definitely when Scylla rolled a nat1 trying to sneak up on the big bad in like session 2 of Drasnia.
When Phaedra rendered everyone speechless-by-sass in Memories.
When Marach yelled at Phae to FIX IT FIX IT FIX IT because shadow creatures.
When OOC everyone found out how old Peri (@projectcodex’s character) was in the Carnival one-shot.
When Pip adopted Scylla, and she proceeded to get yelled at for bringing a child into a dungeon in Drasnia.
And when Scylla had to horse-and-carrot Ysra down from his room with the new book she’d bought him in Drasnia.
Among others, definitely.

i feel like we always ask you about books so today i wanna ask you some anime recs :)
HOW INTERESTING THAT YOU SHOULD COME TO ME NOW, JUST AFTER I FINISHED ATTEMPTING TO BRIBE A TWITTER MUTUAL WITH A PHYSICAL CAKE SO THAT SHE WOULD WATCH AN ANIME I LOVE. i am always happy to share anime recs.
ping pong: the animation (dir. masaaki yuasa): effusive yutaka “peco” hoshino and reserved makoto “smile” tsukimoto have been best friends since day one, and both of them love to play ping pong. peco, a child prodigy at the sport, loves it with all of his soul, and is so confident in his own talent that he’s become arrogant; while smile, in spite of his natural talent, does not take ping pong seriously, seeing it as nothing more than a way to pass the time. things are shaken up for the boys by the arrival of wenge “china” kong, a chinese player sent to redeem himself in japan after being kicked off the national team, who skunks peco in their first match, sending him spiraling into crisis; meanwhile, smile catches the interest of the school’s coach, a former star player, who is determined to make sure smile does not waste his talent. also joining the cast are manabu “akuma” sakuma, peco’s belligerent rival since childhood, and ryuichi “dragon” kazama, vanguard of the elite ping pong team at kaio academy. when all is said and done, will smile and peco’s friendship—and the love of ping pong that bonds them—remain? i urge everyone to watch this anime; it is perhaps the best i’ve ever seen. a work of art, of joy, of sadness and failure and triumph—a tribute to being alive, and to what it means to love something so much you feel like there’s no point in being alive if you can’t do it. and the animation, voice acting, and score are outstanding! 11 episodes.
the tatami galaxy (dir. masaaki yuasa): an unnamed college student is perpetually dissatisfied with his life, bemoaning the fact that he can never seem to grasp that “rose-colored campus life” he was certain he would have upon attending college in kyoto. just about the only thing he has in his corner is his mischievous frenemy, ozu, who drags him into scheme after scheme that only seem to make his situation worse; and a fellow student, akashi, who the protagonist has feelings for, but can never quite seem to spit it out. after a bad break-up sends him over the edge into total cynicism, he starts to wonder if his college years would have been spent differently (i.e., better) if he had chosen to join a different club on his first day. unbeknownst to him, the desire to go back and do it over again does send him back in time—each episode is an alternate timeline based on which club he joined. no matter how things change, though, he always seems to keep running into ozu, to just miss akashi, and to get involved with a man calling himself higuchi, who claims to be a god of matrimony; a bone-headed popular senior named jougasaki; and a beautiful but intense dental hygienist named hanuki. in the protagonist’s quest for the perfect college life, however, will he miss what’s right in front of him? i really love yuasa as you can probably tell and this, just like ping pong, is beautifully animated, great fun, and unexpectedly moving. a testament to the little things, to seeing the beauty and wonder in what we have. and the opening and ending are GOD TIER. 11 episodes.
gekkan shoujo nozaki-kun (dir. mitsue yamazaki): if you somehow haven’t watched this yet, please love yourself and do it. a romantic comedy series that follows 16-year-old chiyo sakura’s attempts to woo her crush, umetarou nozaki, gsnk, contrary to the shoujo form, actually begins with her confessing to him—but he misunderstands and gives her... his autograph?! yes, it turns out nozaki moonlights as a hugely successful shoujo romance mangaka, and he’s been needing an assistant, and sakura is in the art club... convenient! this show has it all—uproarious humor, masterful comedic timing, incredibly charming characters, and just the right dose of heartfelt romance to warm any heart. other cast members include mikoto mikoshiba, nozaki’s best friend, whose flirtatious antics constantly cause him to nearly die of embarrassment; yuzuki seo, chiyo’s best friend, a brash and oblivious jock with a beautiful singing voice; hirotaka wakamatsu, a mild-mannered basketball player constantly aggrieved by seo’s bullying; yuu kashima, star of the drama club and dashing prince of the school; and masayuki hori, drama club president and kashima’s ever-frustrated director. love is in the air not just for sakura, but for a few others, as well—it’s going to be an interesting year! 12 episodes.
kids on the slope (dir. shinchiro watanabe): kaoru nishimi is a shy and depressed honor student, classically trained to play the piano, who has spent his entire life moving from town to town due to the nature of his father’s job. at the beginning of the summer of 1966, he is sent to a small coastal town in kyushu to live with relatives, and is prepared for another year of loneliness until his world is turned on its axis when he meets delinquent sentaro kawabuchi. the two develop a strange and unlikely friendship, and kaoru soon discovers that sentaro, or sen, is an avid fan of jazz, then an emergent form of music in japan, and plays the drums in the basement of a record store owned by the family of his childhood friend, ritsuko mukae, with whom kaoru immediately falls in love. when ritsuko says that she would love to hear kaoru and sen play together, kaoru begins to acquaint himself with jazz, too, and finds that it holds more magic than he expected. part classic coming-of-age drama, part love letter to the jazz genre, this series was, fun fact, directed by the man behind cowboy bebop and samurai champloo—so, like, if that isn’t a testament to its quality, i don’t know what is. it will make you cry, though. just warning you.
silver spoon (dir. tomohiko ito): desperate to escape the pressures of his home life, beleaguered honor student yuugo hachiken foresakes his chances of attending an elite tokyo high school and applies to ezonoo agricultural school in hokkaido. at first holding himself a rung above his peers, due to his perception of them as bumpkins who have never had to work hard academically due to their security as farmers, hachiken quickly learns that there’s a lot he doesn’t know, and he’ll have to work hard if he wants to keep up with his peers. though initially withdrawn, hachiken comes to make many new friends, and soon begins to take his studies seriously, earnestly trying to learn all he can about the world of agriculture and how it affects the lives of his friends. this series is easily something i’d call “the feel-good story of the decade,” but it also has many profound and emotional moments, and a hugely relatable protagonist in hachiken. it’s definitely a comedy, but at its heart, it’s one of those special series that kind of takes your hand and smiles at you and says, “yeah. i get it. i know how you feel. but it’s all right. life’s pretty fun, even if you don’t notice.”
hyouka (dir. yasehiro takemoto): to this day i’m still a bit stunned that kyoto animation managed to come out with something as good as hyouka, since it’s so different from their other works, but the truth is there. it’s simple, with a cast of only four characters and few recurring side ones; a subdued score using mostly public domain classical pieces, a quiet high school as the backdrop, a close and intimate portrait of the four kids it brings together. the PV actually does a fine job of introducing the characters—apathetic houtarou, inquisitive eru, cheerful satoshi, and caustic mayaka—so i won’t go into that too much. essentially, houtarou is urged by his sister to sign up for the classics club after no one else does, since it will be disbanded if it does not have at least one member. much to his surprise, someone else already has signed up by the time he does—a curious girl named eru with an insatiable appetite for mysteries. though houtarou lives by a philosophy of what he calls “energy conservation,” eru has a power over him (read: he has a big, beautiful crush on her) that compels him to go along with her antics, and his penetrating intellect doesn’t help much. satoshi, houtarou’s best friend, and mayaka, a childhood... acquaintance of houtarou’s, also join the club, and hyouka chronicles all of the things that happen to them over the course of their school year. when asked about the meaning behind the title (”hyouka” means “frozen dessert”), the author of the novels said, “the colour of youth is like ice cream. its many flavours are like the spectrum of a rainbow, but no matter how it tastes, what doesn’t change is its richness and flavour. another distinguishing feature of ice cream is the short time one has to eat it, and how we must take care to avoid polluting it. it’s just like how youth is full of numerous possibilities, but its fragile and limited energy is easily challenged by the outside world.” i think that probably speaks for itself in alluding to the bittersweet tone of the series. it really is one of my favorites.
and, because my fingers are getting tired: yu yu hakusho is my favorite shounen series by a mile and one of the few for which i highly recommend the dub—it’s long though, 100+ episodes, but worth every minute. i’ll be glad to go into why yyh specifically is the best in a separate post if anyone is interested bc hoo boy. uchouten kazoku season 1 is great and one of my favorites but season 2 was kind of eh to me. if you like action and tragic romance, kyoukai no kanata is my second-fave kyoani series after hyouka, though it does have some fanservicey bits and fetishy humor that kind of date it a little bit. and if you haven’t started boku no hero academia yet—PLEASE GET ON THAT; IT’S SO MUCH FUN!
and, of course, the anime of my heart and soul: lovely complex, a romcom about a tall girl and a short boy, and their arduous, hilarious, heart-melting journey from vitriolic best buds to lovers. hits all the right notes. no other shoujo compares. it’s a series that anyone and everyone can AND WILL enjoy.
i hope that’s enough to get you started! :’D pls let me know what you think if you watch any

Welcome to Awards Season Part 2 – The Movies 2019 (Chapter 1)
Hopefully, you’ve already read Part 1 of this semi-weekly series and already know some of the players when awards season begins in early December. A few of them have already announced their awards for the year.
I was going to use this second installment to talk about the various Oscar categories and what they signify or represent, and how they are selected, but that can clearly wait until January. Instead, I’m going to get into some of the movies being bandied about this awards season, and there seems to be more than ever.
Mind you, this won’t be one of those, “These are my eight to ten picks to get nominated for Best Picture,” since you can keep track of that over at GoldDerby, even if my reasons and analysis aren’t listed.  I may do something akin to that closer to January once we get some precursors. (See Part 1.)
In each section, I’m going to list the movies in alphabetical order but I’m also going to give a number to each in terms of its Oscar potential. While I’ll talk a little about some of the factors in play for each movie, I’m going to try to not get too deeply into the performances, since that will be saved for a future installment. I’m also going to leave off the desire to talk about animated films or documentaries much, even though the latter is definitely one of my specialties – the former, not so much.
SUNDANCE FAVES
Even before the Oscar nominations are announced for the previous year, the movie biz kicks into high gear with the movies that will be talked about over the next year with the annual trip to Park City, Utah for the newest independent films, including from many who have already established themselves at Sundances past.
Plenty of Sundance premieres have gone onto get awards (or at least nominations) on Oscar night including Little Miss Sunshine, Precious,Beasts of the Southern Wild, Winter’s Bone (whatever happened to that “Jennifer Lawrence” girl?) and more, but it feels like every year, it gets tougher and tougher to make it through the whole year, especially when movies are released during the summertime.
Clemency (NEON) (5)
Tumblr media
It’s almost hard to believe that Chinonye Chukwu’s prison drama, her second movie, premiered all the way back in January, because distributor NEON (who is having a fantastic year!) is waiting until the very tail end of December to release it. The movie stars Alfre Woodard as a prison warden who is trying to juggle her own domestic issues with the impending execution of an inmate, played by Aldis Hodges (who was also excellent in the overlooked Brian Banks). Both performances are solid, having already gotten a few Gotham and Independent Spirit nominations.
Late Night (Amazon) (3)
This Mindy Kaling comedy vehicle, which she wrote and stars with the always wonderful Dame Emma Thompson is a fantastic example of films that come out of Sundance that are based on personal stories but told in an entertaining way. This comedy about Kaling’s character becoming a bit of a diversity hire in the writers’ room for a legendary late night talk show host (played by Thompson) comes from out of Kaling’s time as an intern for Conan O’Brien. It’s a wonderful and very entertaining film, although Amazon hasn’t been supporting its award chances by sending out screeners, maybe since it only made $15.5 million in its early summer theatrical run despite getting a wide release. I really like this movie a lot and in any other year, Kaling’s screenplay would get recognized – it really should have been this year’s The Big Sick*– but at this point, its best bet is a Golden Globe comedy nod for Thompson. (*Remember how everyone thought Holly Hunter would get an Oscar nomination for this that year?)
The Farewell  (A24) (8)
Lulu Wang’s family dramedy based on her own true story (or based on a lie, going by the opening title) is easily one of the year’s best films. The movie burst into Sundance with many raving about the performance by Awkwafina and Chinese vet Shuzhen Zhao, who are both wonderful, but I’m not the only person who absolutely loves this movie, which I expect to do decently among critics groups. It also has that personal thing of The Big Sick, but it’s also a movie set mostly in China, mostly in Mandarin, yet it still has found a fairly wide appeal among moviegoers despite only making slightly more than Late Nightin theaters, peaking in less than 900 theaters. Wisely, A24 is giving this another seasonal push with Wang and Awkwafina doing the rounds, which will guarantee awards voters check out those screeners. It’s a wonderful movie with a fantastic script, and hopefully its support at the Gothams and (less so) at the Independent Spirits will help its Oscar chances.
Tumblr media
The Report (Amazon) (4)
Frequent Steven Soderbergh collaborator Scott Z Burns’ second feature as a director took on the CIA’s use of torture techniques to get info out of Iraqi detainees, which makes it a pretty serious film. Many people at Sundance were raving about the performances by Adam Driver as Daniel Jones, the man writing the report for years, and Annette Bening as Senator Dianne Feinstein, more than for the overall movie. The Reportjust hit Amazon Prime a few weeks after its so-so theatrical showing. (Actually, Amazon took a cue from Netflix and didn’t REPORT (rimshot) its box office.) I feel like Driver’s performance in Marriage Story(see below) has been taking away from this equally great performance and Bening’s performance while great as always isn’t too groundbreaking. In any other year, Burns’ fantastic screenplay would get attention and maybe the WGA will do so, but it’s playing in a tough adapted screenplay year.
Beyond those four films mentioned above, there are also a lot of strong docs that premiered at Sundance and will go all the way to Oscar night, as well as a number of genre films, some which will become popular favorites but not necessarily be in the awards conversation.
CANNES SHENANIGANS
(Actually, there were no actual shenanigans, but it rhymed, so the subtitle sticks!)
As the summer movie season begins in May, the Cannes Film Festival brings many industry insiders to the beach-side Croisette to see some of the fanciest world premiere galas of the year. I personally have never been but it sure looks like a nice working vacation.
There are quite a few strong festivals in between Sundance and Cannes: Berlin, SXSW and Tribeca being three, but to date, they haven’t proven to be particularly strong for delivering Oscar winners or even nominees. Movies like Olivia Wilde’s Book Smart, which premiered at the middle of the three, has proven popular among younger critics but just didn’t take off at the box office
Cannes is another story, and again, in alphabetical order, this year’s festival presented…
Atlantiques/Atlantics (Netflix) (2)
Mati Diop’s feature narrative debut left Cannes with the Grand Prix award, which got it a lot more attention with its look at a love affair between a construction worker and a 17-year-old promised to another man. This is Senegal’s selection for the International Film category, and it has a good chance of getting into the shortlist and nominations, although probably not into other categories persé. It will be interesting to see if this can win any of the critics’ awards in the foreign language category over Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite. The New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) just awarded it as a debut feature, so that’s a start.
Tumblr media
The Lighthouse (A24) (3)
There was a lot of buzz out of Cannes for Robert Eggers’ follow-up to his horror-thriller The VVitch, this one a two-hander starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe as two men taking care of a remote lighthouse where they get stranded as they both start to go insane. (Actually, Dafoe’s character is already halfway there, which might be why his performance is a likely awards contender.) It’s a weird movie that certainly has its fans but it really will need some critical support this week to be taken seriously for anything other than another Dafoe nomination.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire (NEON) (3)
This French drama from Céline Sciamma (Girlhood) about a lesbian love affair between a painter and her subject found a lot of fans at Cannes and subsequent festivals. Many of the film’s fans were upset when France decided to go with Les Misérablesfor its “International Film” selection, and it’s hard to think that this French film will do very well except among critics. The only problem is that it will continually be competing against Parasitein the Foreign Language category, and the best it can do is maybe get a Golden Globe nomination. The New York Film Critics Circlejust awarded it a Cinematography award, so maybe that’s somewhere it might get more attention, but more likely, it’s in the same boat as Atlantics.
A Hidden Life (Fox Searchlight) (4)
Terrence Malick’s latest film debuted at Cannes out of competition, and oddly, it didn’t get nearly as much attention as his previous few films, although it’s amazing how prolific he’s been in the last decade since last being in the awards race in 2011 for The Tree of Life. Not all his movies since then have been great, and he’s made a few forays into documentary, but A Hidden Lifeis a real return to form in terms of dramatic filmmaking. It takes place during World War II when an Austrian farmer refuses to hail allegiance to Hitler and though it’s long at three hours, it certainly is beautiful, and the Academy has frequently gushed over Holocaust films, which this is. It should get some attention for its Cinematography, and we’ll have to see if it might get other awards.
Les Misérables (Amazon) (3)
Ladj Ly’s French police thriller proved that #BlackLivesMatter is not just a United States phenomenon, as it follows a trio of police officers who get involved with the attack on a young boy in the projects and the attempted cover-up. It’s a movie that’s maybe not one that people might think of an “Oscar movie” but France did pick it as its selection in the “International Film” category, and we’ll have to see how much of a push Amazon will give this over its English narrative films. Again, we’ll have to see how things shake out once the Golden Globes announces if it made their own foreign language category.

Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood (Sony) (10)
One of the big Cannes World Premieres and a huge coup for the festival was getting previous winner and jury leader Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film quite a few months before its July theatrical debut by Sony Pictures. Every Tarantino release is a bit event, but this one reunited him with Django Unchained’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Inglourious Basterds’ Brad Pitt, except that this time they were both playing much larger roles. It also brought on Oscar-nominated starlet Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate, and as you can guess, it took place in Hollywood in 1969 revolving around the time of the famous Tate-LaBianca murders by the Charles Manson family. This was another true original from Tarantino that has been well-marketed by Sony to gross $141 million domestically and another $230.9 million overseas. That’s more than Basterdsbut just behind Django, although the film’s Cannes debut vs. Oscar chances shouldn’t be a shock when you realize that both Pulp Fiction and Basterdsdebuted there on their way to the Oscars.
Pain and Glory (Sony Classics) (6)
Pedro Almodovar’s latest film entered the Cannes competition and walked away with a Best Actor award for its star and Almodovar’s frequent leading man Antonio Banderas, who is thought to be in the Oscar race for Lead Actor. (More on him in the next installment.) But the movie itself was such a remarkable comeback for Almodovar who hasn’t been in the Oscar race since 2003’s Talk to Her, although the film’s other star, Penelope Cruz, whose first Oscar nomination was for Almodovar’s 2007 film Volver. There’s always hopes that Almodovar will once again be nominated for his original screenplay (which is excellent) or direction, but those are both crowded fields this year.  It’s a shame because this really is among Almodovar’s best films and the NYFCC picking Banderas as their Best Actor gives the actor a nice boost at the start of awards season.
Tumblr media
Parasite (NEON) (9)
Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho’s sixth feature film burst into Cannes much like the impoverished family in the movie who wheels and deals their way into the home of a wealthier family. It would walk away with the coveted Palme d’Or prize, and with tons of rave reviews from the critics that have helped the movie make its way to theatrical release in which it’s become the highest grossing import from Korea (movie-wise, anyway). The movie is still sitting at 99% on Rotten Tomatoeswith only 3 negative reviews out of 300, and audiences seem to like it almost as much. The only negative is that it is a foreign film with mainly unknown actors and the Academy has never nominated a Korean film for ANY Oscars EVER… isn’t that crazy? Director Bong’s movie will change that as it’s this year’s Amor, Michael Haneke’s Palme D’Or which was nominated for a number of Oscars, only winning one for Foreign Language film. Parasite is so far ahead of the competition in the “International Film” competition, it’s scary, and it’s begun its run of critics awards by taking the Atlanta Film Critics Society’s top honors.
The Traitor (Sony Pictures Classics) (2)
Marco Bellochio’s crime drama (which I haven’t yet seen) premiered in competition with generally decent reviews, and like many other Cannes premieres, it’s best bet is in the International Film category where it will lose to Parasite. It will be the 80-year-old Bellochio’s submission by his country after a number of well-respected films.
Outside the Festival Circuit
Tumblr media
There are quite a few movies released in the summer and early fall that aren’t necessarily considered awards movies, the big one being Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame (Disney), which I’ll probably write more about o6ver at The Beat.  Focus Features managed to have the biggest hit of their 16-year-plus career with the movie incarnation of the popular BBC show Downton Abbey from previous Oscar nominee (and Emmy winner) Julian Fellowes, and they’re likely to try to push that into the awards race especially if some of their other offerings (see below) don’t click.
Okay, this is already getting too long. So I’m going to cut it off here and get to the rest of the year in Part 2… yes, there will be a Chapter 2, Part 2. Deal with it.

TKA Fan Radio Drama - Chaos On Weibo [with translated transcript]
Because I need something after the final episode of Season 1, here’s another with a quick and loosely translated transcript.
This one is my favourite fan radio drama for TKA!!! It is pure crack! A few of the voice actors are the same in the animation, such as Ye Xiu, Steam Bun and Wei Chen. It also has pretty pictures~
If you are only following the English fandom, there are some spoilers ahead and some characters that have yet to appear as of the latest novel translation. You’ve been warned!
Translation:
Chaos On Weibo

Mechanic Xiao Shiqin: *cries* T_T
Lin Jingyan: Finally saw a tactics guy say a chunk of stuff. Question is, why is none of it constructive?
Zhang Jiale: Say, what is that Ye Xiu thinking? Is he really planning to be with both pretty ladies Su Mucheng and Tang Rou? Does he think that his harem is not big enough?
Dai Yanqi CP16_HopingForSoldOut: Wait… God Le, do explain what do you mean by “harem not big enough”? Could it be that you are reading our books?

Bao Rongxin: I shall go where you are headed, boss, no complaints!!
Ye Xiu: But it’s New Year Holiday now, those guys are definitely going to get in the way.
Wei Chen: What about it? They like playing in the game these days?
Su Mucheng: Since season 10, they’ve discovered that in-game training yields good results.
Wei Chen: No wonder. I was wondering why were there so many people idling about, disrupting my view.
Chen Guo: OMGOMGOMG!!!!!!!! Samsara’s Du Ming just confessed to Tang Rou on weibo!!!
Wei Chen: Oh? So courageous? Let me take a look and give him my support!! Heh heh~
Su Mucheng: Pft! Hahaha. Tang Rou, aren’t you going to reply him?
Tang Rou: Du Ming? The name is somewhat familiar…
Ye Xiu: Hahahahaha! Great fellow! Tang Rou, think up something to blow this up. Though this will likely affect your popularity.
Tang Rou: Popularity? I don’t concern myself with something like that. Go on, what should I do?
Ye Xiu: Come up with a reply yourself. Would be best if it creates a big hoo-ha in the whole pro scene! A few guilds have started on the BOSS. Let me see, once their progress are roughly there, we shall steal these BOSS away to a single place and kill them all in one wave. (* ̄▽ ̄)Y
   (Tang Rou replied on weibo)
Ye Xiu: WTF! Tang Rou, you are truly brutal!
Tang Rou: I feel that the results are good.
Wei Chen: Thank goodness Fang Rui isn’t around or else it’d be chaos.
Su Mucheng: Where did he go? He is even not on QQ.
Wei Chen: He went back home for a matchmaking session.
Chen Guo: He is so despicable, which girl would fall for him?
Wei Chen: Eh, you don’t say. Ever since that fight with Samsara, that guy’s popularity has been on the rise!
Su Mucheng: Oh no! Troubling Rain has appear!
Ye Xiu: One really can’t underestimate that guy. Blogging while fighting BOSS is no big deal for him. Let me fan the flames.
  (Ye Xiu: Hehe.)
Chen Guo: Wow… The whole of weibo has erupted! We will probably be trending!
Ye Xiu: With me around, heh heh~~
  (timelaspe)
Su Mucheng: Qiu Fei must be sad. He has always liked you. You are now totally a Rubbish Seme, Ye Xiu!
Ye Xiu: =。= I told you to not mix with Dai Yanqi… What’s the HP of those BOSS?
Tang Rou: 60%
Ye Xiu: Ok, I have an idea, the rest of you need not report. What has all these guilds been eating, why are their attacks are so noob? Still need to attend to it myself!
  (Fang Rui surfaced on weibo)
   Qiao Yifan: Senior Fang Rui…
Ye Xiu: Good job! That’s Master Fang Rui for you! Long distance assist and it’s not even coordinated!!! Weeding out those playing tactics in a breath, this is great! That bunch of most shameless scoundrels are now far away from the BOSS battlefield!
(Don’t ask Fang Rui, he doesn’t know a thing.)
Su Mucheng: Yunxiu is asking me for an explanation.
Ye Xiu: Ignore her…
Su Mucheng: (´▽`)Too late, I’ve typed “Hehe”.
Ye Xiu: Hah! Not bad! Good play! Yo, Old Han also got involved? That means Tyranny won’t be of any trouble! How much is left?
Su Mucheng: 40%
Mo Fan: 36%
Ye Xiu: As expected, that Huang Shaotian has not fully disengage from the battle! Go, Steam Bun! Post something, anything! Heartfelt words are fine too!
Bao Rongxing: Yes! Boss!
  (Steam Bun’s declaration of love.)
An Wenyi: Steam Bun… Your heartfelt words?
Luo Ji: ToT
Su Mucheng: Not bad, Steam Bun, I support you! (<ω<)✰
Ye Xiu: Don’t tease… Let me take a look, who else is left on the battlefield? Steam Bun, all you did was to lure out some slash fans, the impact’s not big enough. Mo Fan, go. Post saying you like Mucheng. I give you special permission.
Mo Fan: Not going.
Ye Xiu: ¯\_(︶▽︶)_/¯ Then you won’t be on the list for the next batch of sliver equipment upgrade.
Su Mucheng: Mo Fan, go on, I give you special permission too. o(>V<)o
Mo Fan: Ok
(@SuMucheng V♡)
Chen Guo: Hahahahaha!!! They should all be weeded out now! Are there any pros still fighting BOSS?
Ye Xiu: The BOSS HP are kinda there. Boss [referring to Chen Guo], post some final words on the official team blog to distract them. I’ve already told Wu Cheng to lead the BOSS to 55, 144’ coordinates. Tang Rou, Mo Fan, Mucheng, speed!
Fang Rui: YeXiu YeXiu YeXiu YeXiu YeXiu!!!!! You guys you guys you guys you guys!!!!! Nobody informed me about such a big thing!!!
Ye Xiu: Party up, we’ve left some scraps for you. These BOSS are on their last breath. Definitely ours without a doubt~
