And The Toxic Yaoi Tournament Begins!
I put in any pairing that got more than one independent nomination, with the exception of two that were only submitted once that I pulled in to plug the gaps, and Garai/Michio, my pollrunner's choice.
All the matchups on the left side will have their polls posted tomorrow, while the matchups on the right will have their matchups posted the day after tomorrow. All matchups will last for one week. Seeding was done based on how many works the pairing was tagged in on Archive of our Own.
Left Side (September 19th-September 26th):
Hannigram (Hannibal) vs. Garai/Michio (Tezuka's MW)
Louistat (Interview With The Vampire) vs. Nandermo (What We Do In The Shadows)
Bingqiu (Scum Villain's Self-Saving System) vs. Rudolf/Der Tod (Elisabeth das Musical)
Krisnix (Ace Attorney) vs. Lawlight (Death Note)
Right Side: (September 20th-September 27th)
Narusasu (Naruto) vs. Yoshiki/"Hikaru" (The Summer Hikaru Died)
Suzululu (Code Geass) vs. Xuexiao (Mo Dao Zu Shi)
Shuake (Persona 5) vs. A-ya/C-ta (Shuuen no Shiori Project)
Oh Sangwoo/Yoon Bum (Killing Stalking) vs. Vegaspete (Kinnporsche)

My Osamu Tezuka manga collection + PLUTO, Astro Boy 2003 and Princess Knight - The Night of the Princess.
I am reading them at my pace.
I think you can tell which ones are the french and the brazillian editions.
The Brazilian editions are not with me yet besides the Kimba ones.
For curiosity, Kimba was my first Tezuka manga ever.
I want to read/collect all Tezuka's works, impossible? probably.
I will post new photos when I can buy more mangas.

This is the Buddy for March 29th. He looks kind of... I don't know, off.
It's weird how, a small change in proportions - making the nose too small, the ears too low on the head, the smile a bit too wide - can turn a regular drawing into something unsettling. Creepy.
And yet, I have a special appreciation for the accidental creepiness of some art. I especially like the contrast between the simplistic artstyle and a mature, or creepy, story. It's not just the fact that the clash is surprising, either. It's because there's an aspect of unpredictability to it. If you're reading something like, say, Berserk, the Kentaro Miura manga that's cornered the market on edginess, it's not that surprising that there'll be people being eaten alive and babies being launched from catapults every other page.
But when an Osamu Tezuka manga features extreme violence (like, say, MW, with that scene where Mr. Mustachio of Astro Boy fame gets attacked by dogs), it sure is memorable.
That's not to say Berserk isn't enjoyable in and of itself, though. I'm not too far into it yet, but, it's fun. I think there's an issue of people either loving or hating something that violent, because they take it really seriously. But, it's like with horror moives, when you're into it, you can appreciate it for its style and creativity without assuming it's supposed to be taken serious.
Which, in a way, is also the issue with some of the stuff I don't like, be it in manga or, you kow, other forms of entertainment. Once you understand that it's just something normal people enjoy without affecting their worldview, it's not a big deal.
On the other hand, I've been called edgy before even though I see myself as a pretty bland guy. Just run of the mill day to day stuff like making jokes about devils and nuns seems to be pretty extreme in some poeple's eyes.
Which is kind of the point, at times. Like with Dungeons&Dragons, we'd sometimes see monsters who look like the devil, and some people (religious types, mostly) would accuse the game played by nerds doing math of being a form of devil worship. Of course, they're just using the demon design because it looks interesting, and they don't make an association between the artstyle and real satanism.
So, in a way, the real edginess there isn't worshipping the devil, but saying the devil isn't real.
