I'm not joking that I get the impression you'd probably be into 2000s-10s emo bands like Brave Little Abacus (their second album "Just Got Back" in particular has been a lasting influence on hyperpop kids).
Maybe! I don't know, when it comes to emo in a general sense, and especially that specific era, it's pretty rare for me to find something that I like. But I kinda checked out on it completely by, like, 2005 or so. I was helping out a friend's band who started some local band shit by running ads in the local free paper that just said "FUCK EMO" and dumb stuff like that, very abrasive. So I was very much not in the same headspace, musically, then. By the time 2007 rolled around I had gotten deep into mstrkrft, Justice, and all that sort of stuff.
In a lot of ways hyperpop and the surrounding genres kind of combine a lot of things I was 50-80% into the first time around, and I find that so fucking... exciting? Intriguing? I don't know. The last time I was making music we were very much trying to slam genres together in weird ways and the end results were fun, but I didn't have the production chops to fully realize any of that. 100 gecs, specifically, fully realizes those dreams I had and then some, it's fucking cool. The other acts in and around the genre are also pretty exciting in different ways, though like any good modern genre it seems like everyone involved in it has already gotten extremely sick of the word "hyperpop."
