i played A Little Pandemonium last night and maybe its because i already dont like the writer of this one for unrelated, personal reasons (and a long-established difference of taste) but i did NOT enjoy it. i was on board at first, and found it decently enjoyable and easy enough to follow (although it was kind of one of the stories that i only know how to progress because of what actions were available, and not because of any actual thread of logic i was following) but. well okay actually let me summarize the story a little

you are approached by a member of the Ministry of Public Decency, who is trying to plan a fun bonfire event to help soften the MoPD's reputation for being absolutely no fun at all. He's received threats from Revolutionaries that they are planning on setting off a bunch of fireworks (even though the Ministry said they were only going to set off ONE small firework) and burning their own effigy (instead of the Ministry's approved appropriate effigy). you're supposed to find the fireworks and the effigy so the Revolutions cant ruin the event. Or... well, or not!

I'm not a cop, so I let the Revolutionaries set off their fireworks (also i like fireworks). I wanted to know who their effigy was of, and it seemed like the only way to do that was to let them burn it, so I did. And here's where the story lost me!! See, I figured the effigy would be of... idk Queen Victoria, maybe? One of the Masters? But instead it was an effigy of... the rando guy from the Ministry who planned the event. And then, after I'd ruined the event this guy had worked hard on, he sat down and started crying.

there was other stuff after that (a parade of masked Revolutionaries come in carrying a brass box, and you can either help protect them from cops or join the cops to try to stop them. if you help them, they open their big brass box and all the bonfires go out)

but. idk i couldn't really get past the effigy thing. I've been thinking about it a lot since i played it last night, and why it really bothered me. why would you, a politically motivated faction, use your opportunity to symbolically burn someone to embarrass this fucking rando? not... someone who's actually done something bad? not someone with power? this is just Some Guy who Planned a Party! why go after him, personally? and why would you, as a writer, decide to make me watch him cry? Am I supposed to enjoy his tears? or is this supposed to make me wish I'd instead sided with the cops?

It also kind of took me out of the experience- if I'd known who the effigy would be of, I wouldn't have used it, but at the same time, I know how FL works (and ESes especially), and theres almost never a reward for moderation. no middle sliders!

I don't know. I don't like it when I make a decision and there's some huge consequence I couldn't have predicated because the game wouldn't give me all the information i needed. I think some people enjoy it when you make a seemingly benign decision and it sets off a Rube Goldberg machine of misery, but. well. I Fucking Don't.

Hilal itu tetangga Gina dari Gina pindah kompleks pas kelas dua SD dan dari dua SD itu, Gina nggak pernah suka sama Hilal. Bukan apa-apa tapi menurut Gina dari umur tujuh sampai sekarang tujuh belas, Hilal itu anaknya nyebelin. Entahlah tapi si Hilal-Hilal ini adaaa aja tingkahnya yang bikin Gina sebel bahkan dulu sering bikin Gina nangis. Terus kalau disuruh maafan sama guru mereka, bukannya minta maaf yang sincere, Hilal nih pasti nambahin 'cengeng lu' di akhir kalimatnya. Kayak apa sih, nggak beneran banget minta maafnya? Terlebih Hilal juga kayaknya nggak suka sama Gina karena pas SMP―iyap, mereka satu SMP―Hilal yang 'ngegagalin' Gina dapat peran utama di teater sekolah yang mana Gina ngincer banget peran itu. Ya Gina sebel lah, masa cuma karena Hilal nggak setuju a.k.a nggak mau Gina yang jadi lawan mainnya―iyap lagi, mereka satu ekstrakurikuler di teater―dia harus ngerelain peran yang dia mau? Gina bahkan masih inget gimana vokalnya Hilal ngasih suggestion ke Kak Aimar tentang Gina yang nggak cocok meranin female lead-nya. Makin-makinlah Gina nggak suka sama Hilal pun Hilalnya antipati sama kenggaksukaan Gina itu. Makanya pas acara makrab dalam rangka MOPD malam ini, Gina shock berat waktu Hilal tahu-tahu mengulurkan tangan padanya.

"Temenin gue nyanyi"

"Cieeee ekhmmm"

Semua orang―nggak peserta didik barunya, nggak panitianya bahkan kakak pembina, ngecie-cie-in tapi daripada kayak scene romantis, Gina ngerasa itu adalah mimpi buruk. Hilal pinter banget bikin Gina 'menderita'.

"Oke, mau nyanyi apa nih pasangan kita? Kak Hilal sama Kak Giana?" seloroh Omar tengil bikin Gina tambah sebel. Akal-akalan siapa sih kalau ada panitia telat hukumannya harus nyanyi duet? Dan kenapa juga si Hilal ini pake telat segala? Rumah mereka bahkan nggak sejauh itu dari SMA! HHHH Gina sebel nggak habis pikir.

"Lucky-nya Jason Mraz" jawab Hilal bahkan nggak ada kodenya sama Gina bikin Gina seketika melotot.

"Yang mana tuh, Kak? Yang lucky I'm in love with my best friend~ itu bukan?"

"Tul" Hilal cengengesan. Sumpah sok asik banget.

"Waduh kode nih, lancar-lancar ya, Kak Hilal, semuanya bilang aamiin coba"

"AAMIIN"

APA-APAAN???!!!! Gina melotot semelotot-melototnya sementara Hilal masih dengan role sok asiknya.

"Gue nggak mau" desis Gina waktu Hilal mengambil posisi di sebelahnya.

"Ya gue juga nggak mau, namanya juga dihukum"

"Tapi yang dihukum kan elo, gue nggak!!!"

"Ya siapa suruh lu mau aja gue tunjuk"

Tuh kan, gitu tuh nyebelinnya Hilal.

"Nih," Hilal menyorongkan ponselnya ke Gina. "Incase lu nggak tau liriknya"

Dan akhirnya mereka menyanyi sepenggal lagu Lucky dengan Hilal yang sok keren dan Gina yang ogah-ogahan bahkan Gina cuma bergumam asal. Males dan sebel banget sama Hilal.

"Suara lu lumayan" kata Hilal setelah sekian jam hukuman mereka selesai dan panitia sedang menyiapkan spot untuk 'renungan malam' di lapangan basket. Entah bagaimana meski tidak akrab dan justru saling tidak suka, Gina dan Hilal selalu bersinggungan di banyak hal. Mulai dari sekolah yang selalu sama sampai ketertarikan di kegiatan-kegiatan sekolah yang mirip. Bagus kan suara gue?" tanya Hilal setelah penggalan lagu yang ia nyanyikan. Gina masih geming dengan raut tak terbaca tapi mengangguk pada pertanyaan terakhir Hilal.

"Mayan" kata Gina sambil membuang muka. Gina bukan salah tingkah, dia cuma nggak tahu harus bereaksi bagaimana sebab dia dan Hilal literally tidak pernah berinteraksi 'sedamai' itu. Pun Gina tidak mungkin bilang jelek sebab suara Hilal memang bagus. Entah bagaimana terdengar halus dan menghibur.

"Tanya dong kenapa lagu itu favorit gue"

"Apa sih, Hil? Lu siapin lilin deh"

Gina memutar mata. "Kenapa lagu tadi favorit lo?" Gina bertanya geregetan sementara Hilal, Gina bisa melihat lelaki itu cengengesan.

"Gue tau kita nggak sedeket itu malah gue ngerasanya lo sebel sama gue though gue nyenengin gini anaknya," Hilal ketawa sendiri. "Tapi kita tetep tetangga, Gin, dikit banyak gue tau soal orang tua lo..." Hilal memeriksa raut Gina entah untuk apa namun Gina tidak menunjukkan perubahan raut berarti. Hilal mengulum bibir.

"Gin," Hilal menarik senyum hingga kinda lesung pipinya terlihat. "Gue nggak tau lo masih cengeng apa nggak tapi remember ya, whatever it is, the moon loves you. She always loves you" Hilal menunjuk langit dan Gina mengikuti. Menemukan bulan yang tidak benar-benar dalam fase terbaiknya malam ini dan entah bagaimana Gina tiba-tiba merasa runtuh.

Mama dan papanya, yang Gina pikir baik-baik saja selama ini, akan resmi berpisah minggu depan. Gina menerima, Gina belajar menerima, setidaknya Gina tidak menangis selama proses itu tapi mau seberkali-kali apapun Gina mendengarkan dan memaknai older-nya Sasha Sloan atau berusaha menempatkan dirinya di sepatu mama atau papanya, Gina tetap seorang anak yang bagaimana bisa dia baik-baik saja? Separuh mamanya ada di Gina pun separuh papanya lalu bagaimana bisa Gina memilih?

Gina menekuk lututnya rapat dan dengan erat dia peluk dirinya. Gina nggak pernah merasa sehilang itu dan ditengah kebingungannya, di naik turun punggungnya dan ritme napas yang tidak teratur, Gina bisa merasakan tepukan ritmis jatuh di bahunya berkali-kali.

"It's okay, Gin. It's okay, gue tutupin"

Mau umur Gina tujuh atau tujuh belas, Hilal nyatanya nggak pernah gagal membuat Gina menangis tapi tangis yang kali ini, Gina berterimakasih karena Hilal membuatnya menangis. Mungkin Hilal nggak semenyebalkan yang Gina kira.
