48. death is not destiny
This one's a weird one I have difficulty explaining, but it's the idea that there isn't a dedicated "personification of death" and instead every so often when you dream you'll find yourself sitting with people who are dying or about to die, and you can help them, whether that's by hitting call on their phone, knocking something over so a friend sees what's wrong, or even just sitting with them in their last moments so they know they're not alone. Something something death is inevitable how you die isn't, we are all connected:
The first thing I felt was the jolt from the front of my head to the back. There was wetness across my forehead, but the pain didn’t come ‘til moments later, and I was stunned too dizzy to scream. I didn’t see her until my vision had gone all the way to black and started fading back in, and I don’t think she realised I was there until then either.
She looked like an old picture, like my grandmother in her early days of marriage if my grandmother had been fair, and maybe born ten years earlier. Her hair was curled and she had a little apron to protect her skirt that looked so much heavier and longer than I was used to. She looked like she was waiting for someone to come home from The War—I didn’t know which one, but everyone on TV who looked like her did and said it like that.
I don’t think she saw me at first and when she did, I don’t think she knew what to do.

I’ll have a screwdriver with a shot of detergent, make it a double.
Last barfly here I scrawl my number on a napkin,

SWALK in red, and I mean it.
I’m not really hungry but I can’t just drink—
A small bowl of the night's special sweets, then.
Some OTC analgesics, my mother’s codeine,
the back up cold and flu, every vitamin I can find,
oh, and that chalky grape-flavoured prescription I had a reaction to and threw in the back of the cupboard to moulder.
Orange juice cuts through mucus guilt so I may swallow
And I stagger alone to bed with a new RSI in my gulp.
Tomorrow’s a new emergency all too soon as I wake
The fire alarm screams season’s greetings—
Scrubbing smoke from the walls hungover I think maybe—
It can’t have been good for my stomach.

1. Dogs (dogs caught my eye and happened to be the first one)
😂 so Tales of Symphonia (gamecube era jrpg) has a function where a couple of your party members, if chosen to 'lead' the group (ie are the character model running around on the map representing all of you) will get different reactions out of the NPCs when you talk to them. Colette, one of the main characters, has a unique interaction where if you walk up to any dog while she's leading she will get very excited and tell you what that dog's name is. This is the only way to find out what any of the many, many good dogs in the game are called. There's also one part of the game where uh, her soul is temporarily sublimated? gone? and she will not react to any dogs (or anything) until she's cured of this.
Anyway, here's an excerpt from "Dogs":
“I ask the dog what his name is!” Colette blurted, leaning in excitedly and scrabbling for her d20.
There was a thump as Mithos dropped his notebook against the table, his eyes narrowing over the DMs screen at Colette, who was grinning excitedly.
“Do I still get my bonus for animal handling?” she asked, shaking her hand, and Raine bit her knuckle lightly, trying to stifle a laugh.
“Colette,” Mithos said, his fingertips pressing together lightly over the top of the screen like a cartoon villain. “Your character can’t speak, let alone speak to animals. You don’t have a soul right now.”
