Cassandra made a face. “Aren’t you freezing?”
“I run hot.” Varric winked at her, then laughed loudly. Stray, unbrushed hairs fell in front of his face, which he didn’t swipe away.
She flushed red. “No. You’re just drunk.”
“Could a drunk person do this?”
He stood perfectly still. And then, he continued to stand perfectly still. It was ten seconds of full silence, with only music and laughter in the background to break it, before Cassandra finally frowned.
“Do… what?”
“Was that not a backflip?”
Cullen turned his face away. He held his hand over his mouth and coughed loudly, but not quick enough to hide his smile.
“You didn’t do anything,” Cassandra huffed, “you just stood there!”
“Prove it.”
“Prove—you didn’t even move!”

As someone who came to Dragon Age fandom late and thus was spoiled by immediately having access to years' worth of fanfics from every imaginable trope to enjoy, the current complete lack of Gale Dekarios / Modern Girl in Faerun author self-insert fanfics is killing me.
We've already got the perfect entry point for the MGIF character: The opening cinematic of the nautiloid jumping between realms snatching people up. What if one of the random jumps was to our reality and someone who had played the game was kidnapped instead of Tav? After all, in an infinite multiverse, it's entirely possible that something that is fiction in one universe is reality in another universe. [Edit: Earth and Faerun existing in the same multiverse confirmed to be canon in Forgotten Realms lore.]
But so far there's barely any Modern Character in Faerun fanfics at all, and none of them are Gale/OFC. Come on, fanfic authors, I've already thoroughly exhausted all my own cringey self-insert fantasies in my daydreaming, please let me read yours. How much do you use your foreknowledge of events to steer for a specific ending or perhaps create a brand new one? How long are you able to bite your tongue about Mystra before going off on a rant that Gale's not ready to hear about how she was an abusive groomer? How many terrible jokes will your self-insert character make about pondering his orb? I NEED TO KNOW.

Modern Character in Thedas!! Fic Rec
I actually love that there’s a part of the Dragon Age Fandom where basically self-inserts have such good fics. I’ll admit that a lot of what I read in this tag is self-indulgent (but that’s really what fanfiction is for) and I thought I might catalog some of my fav fics so far.
I think also what’s great about this tag is that it actually exists! I try to occasionally find similar concepts in other fandoms but this kind of tag doesn’t seem to translate into many other fandoms, or at least the fics that do exist aren’t exactly to my taste. So hopefully this is helpful to everyone like me!
Mostly only Inquisition. IF ANYONE HAS ANY RECS PLEASE SHARE
Also can more authors pls write different ships other than Cullen and Solas?
I’m more partial to completed fics but unfortunately many of the fics in this tag are WIPs. I’ll be posting more lists like this in the future so be on the lookout.
With Horns - The_Ravenous
Not rated ı 97/? ı 362,357 words ı updated 2021
Modern Boy in Thedas who gets turned into a Vashoth, he basically replaces Adaar. Male Inquisitor/Cassandra, yay a ship that isn’t common within this tag!!
I’ve only read the first few chapters but the main character seems funny and I’m partial to the MC becoming a mage and learning the ins and outs of magic.
Identity - AMCanderly
T ı 6/6 ı 26,172
This is part of a series where a woman from earth get transported into Thedas in DA 2 but she gets made tranquil, this fic specifically is her struggle in having the mark which causes her to be cured and her struggle with regaining consciousness/autonomy.
Sugar and Spice - Cracking Lamb
E ı 15/15 ı 25,894
This is a fic that spans across all 3 games so therefore is not a very detailed fic however I love the stable relationship between Bull and the MGiT.
What a Wicked Game - Cracking Lamb
E ı 148/? ı 400,570
CrackingLamb yet again! I admit I have not even read this one half way through but from what I have read I really enjoy Imogen/Solas even if it’s slightly toxic, also good smut…
No Longer A Game - Here_To_Be
E ı 63/63 ı 347,357
I haven’t read this one but it seems to be promising, you might be noticing that I prefer to read about an MCiT that knows the events of the game so any summary mentioning that the character loves Inquisition is immediately put on my TBR.
MARKED - ThroughtheMirrorDarkly
M ı 10/10 ı 109,948
I read this a while ago so I don’t remember much but I remembered the name out of all the hundreds of fics I read in a year! The MC has spent a few years in Thedas but wasn’t involved in the story until Inquisition. Solas/OFC
Running On Empty - PickleDillo
T ı 27/27 ı 163,762
This is the first in a completed series, MC/Iron Bull so obviously it has to be included, I can’t wait until I finish this series. This includes an MC inquisitor who isn’t immediately skilled in combat or over powered.
Coalesce - Beckily
E ı 36/36 ı 83,437
This does have a r8pe warning so I’m not sure if this is explicitly in the story, but it has such an interesting concept of a Modern Girl who gets transported into Male Adaar’s body and they have to figure out how to live together.
Virtually Faded - AntlersandFangs, Celtic_Lass
M ı 101/101 ı 519,973
This is probably a fic that i am not going to read anytime soon as I’m intimidated by the word count. (Don’t make fun of me I’m not patient enough to read really long fics, i need to CONSUME as many fics as quickly as possible) This fic is centred around a pair of friends who get transported to Thedas so this is slightly different from the other fics in this list.
Ad Infinitum - Stormontheocean
E ı 78/78 ı 252,544
MC discovers that Thedas’ Common language is definitely not English so she pretends to be deaf and mute, slightly Mary-Sue but I’m not opposed to it in doses. MC/Cullen
Commiseration - cleighc
M ı 1/1 ı 12,867
A small one but with a focus on relationship between Cole and MC, def not a happy one but interesting nonetheless.
Swedish Firesteel - Escapist_Velocity
T ı 100/100 ı 142,503
I haven’t read this one but it could be interesting. MC/Cullen
{1. Defiance} Everything’s Just Fine - EmpressTod
T ı 73/73 ı 181,562
MC/SERA!!!!!!! Sera is never bloody apart of the main pairing so this is exciting for me.
honeyeater - foetend
E ı 21/21 ı 58,529
Reasonably short one that I haven’t read all the way through so hopefully this is worth it. The concept of Flemeth being involved and tasking MC to get close to Solas is heaps unique so it has to be mentioned. I feel like people really don’t utilise the Elvhen Gods/lore enough or perhaps tend to lean towards paragraphs of lore dumping.
Suddenly, Qunari - Jiwa
E ı 20/40 ı 168,203
Once again MBiT gets transported into Adaar’s body and becomes the Herald! Eventual polyamory with Bull and Dorian, I like how cute and funny MC is.
Ithelan - DyeingRoses
M ı 35/? ı 80,925
Inquisitor/OC which is not common, however I’m not sure how frequently this fic will be updated, this is def on top of my TBR list. MC becomes a tatted elf.
Sugar Honey Iced tea - AntlersandFangs, Beckily, Celtic_Lass
M ı 48/48 ı 412,762
Multiple modern characters dropped into Thedas, haven’t read this one but it seems interesting most especially because of the pairings. Varric/ OFC, Krem/ OFC, Solas/ OC, Inquisitor/ OC.
The Guardian - yayenchan
M ı 13/? ı 56,602
Female Trevelyan/ OMC, Mary Sue elements here but the first chapter seemed promising.

Chapters: 7/? Fandom: Dragon Age: Inquisition, Dragon Age (Video Games), Dragon Age - All Media Types Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence Relationships: Josephine Montilyet/Original Character(s) Characters: Original Non-Binary Character, Original Characters, Female Trevelyan (Dragon Age), Leliana (Dragon Age), Josephine Montilyet, Varric Tethras, Cassandra Pentaghast, Solas (Dragon Age), Original Male Character, Original Female Character Additional Tags: Modern Character in Thedas, Nonbinary Character, Genderfluid Character, Thedas isn't transphobic, Anxiety, Depression, the relationship won't be for a while, Spoilers, Trespasser Spoilers, Inquisition spoilers, Canon-Typical Violence, first person POV, will not stay canon compliant but is for now, later on they will realise they can change some things... Series: Part 1 of What a deadly wish Summary:
Arden was meant to be going on a camping trip with their friends. They were NOT meant to be waking up in some sort of ruin, with a green globe and a pile of skulls next to them. With no phone signal, and no idea where they are, they try to get away from whatever creepy place they woke up in - only to run into people who are either very invested larpers, or people heading to a place Arden only knows of from a video game. And oh, there's magic. Fuck.
Chapter 7 Summary:
There's a pause before they respond. My eyes are on the floor, not wanting to see whatever glances they exchange as they try to decide what to do with what probably seems like evidence that their 'Herald' is delusional. I know the characters well enough to be pretty sure they won't just lock me away somewhere, or keep me secreted away unless they need me, but I still feel anxious energy filling me and I try to fight the urge to twist my fingers nervously. It's Leliana who speaks. "Not from this world?" She asks slowly. "What exactly do you mean?"
Arden explains their origins to Leliana and Cassandra, and finds out about one of the people they may have inadvertently replaced. Hey! I finally broke free of my writer’s block and finished a chapter! Hopefully it won’t take as long until the next one, but here! Hope you enjoy reading it:D

So I hit a pretty big fanfic milestone today!
I don't normally put much weight into kudos or hits to be honest, but I recently checked my stats to see how many subscriptions, bookmarks, and comment threads I had, and I noticed how many kudos I was about to hit on one of my fics and had to do a double take. I hit 1000 Kudos. I'd never breached the four digit threshold before. My long wips all get to about the 500-800 kudo range and then stop getting new kudos (but plenty of comments). So I was honestly shocked. I had to take a moment to sit back.
And then immense doubt overfilled me so I went to the fic in question and noticed about 330 of those kudos were guest kudos, so it could have been people logging out to kudo the fic again to inflate the numbers like they used to when rapid-clicking the kudo button.
But even still... four digits! 1000 kudos. I thought I'd never see the day. Especially because I write OC-centric fics, Portal Fantasy/Isekai sorta stuff. So I never thought it would be read all that much. It's wild.
And to add to it, I was just considering posting the fic over on fanfiction.net because I know gen fics tend to do better over there vs on ao3. Guess this is all the motivation I need to do just that.
The fic in question that hit 1k kudos is Rippling the Pages, an adult fan of HP steps through a red telephone booth and lands in the Ministry of Magic and has to be quick on her feet to get help without revealing she's not supposed to be in their world.
To be honest I owe this milestone to my prior fics and the people who read them and supported me through out writing them. Each wip I've done, even if I've stopped updating them, has helped me improve my writing. Including but not limited to all my Modern Character in Thedas/Modern GIrl in Thedas fics.
My MCIT/MGIT long fics that really helped me get here are (in order of when I was working on them)
Maker Have Mercy (2015-2016 - In Rewrite)
By the Tits of My Ancestors (2016-2021 On Hiatus)
No Deed Left Unpunished (2017-Present)
Mea Culpa (2019-Present)
Sins Against the Wall (2020-Present)
These aren't all of them but they are the biggest/longest ones I have.
Anyway that's all. Just wanted to share this milestone.

Soulmate Friday: Modern Character in Thedas
One thing that Rosanna appreciated was that in Thedas you could still get a Matchmaker to perform a MASH. It was expensive, not free like it was back on Earth, but still possible. Crashlanding in Thedas thanks to some sort of spell or portal or whatever might have upset her life, but some things were constant.
The fact it was a public thing though was… less so. The Matchmaker sat at her little desk in the middle of Hightown Square, and everyone was watching. The nobles went first. Some had really messed up futures that had them paling, but the rest were pretty normal. Rosanna didn’t know any of the nobles, the video game only went into detail about a few of them, but she did have a few snickers with some of the other watchers over the outcome of some.
Rosanna once heard someone compare the MASH to a child’s game, and certainly there was the non-magical version teenagers played, giggling and cooing. The act seemed so ridiculous, seeing your future and discovering your soulmate through the game. It was why at twenty-five Rosanna hadn’t yet gotten hers done. She wanted to try and set herself on a path she chose before submitting to having her future told.
Of course she ended up in a video game series in the end, so the cosmos were laughing at her.
“We are now open to the public,” the Matchmaker declared. “I will charge two silvers.” Huh, not as expensive as usual. It got the attention of the crowd who began muttering. Rosanna patted her chest where she kept her coin purse. Was it worth it…
Maybe it said she would go home?
That was enough to make her step forward, flushing out her coin purse from the front of her dress and digging out the coins. She walked towards the desk, offering the woman her coins. The Matchmaker took it with a nod, and Rosanna sat down.
The drop of blood into the ink made Rosanna wonder why Thedas was fine with MASHes but not blood magic. It was a bit odd. Or maybe it was because the nobles liked this type and the Chantry… yeah that. Probably.
The ink was spilt on the parchment paper and Rosanna watched as the names began appearing. She nearly choked.
Varric Tethras
Iron Bull
Fenris
Anders
“What the…” Rosanna stared at the sheet. The Matchmaker ignored her, insteading reading them allowed. There was some movement among the people and Rosanna turned her head slightly to lock eyes with Varric. It was three years before the Blight, but he had his crossbow.
So, probably not him then. Good.
The next thing to appear were her future jobs, the matchmaker reading them off calmly.
“Mercenary, apothecary chemist, shopkeeper, Inquisitor,” the Matchmaker droned on, voice blank. A side effect of the ritual? Rosanna felt her face pale as people hissed at the last word, Inquisitor. There was only one Inquisition ever, and they had a potential leader for a new one in front of them.
Rosanna focused on the next part, saying where she would live. Skyhold… no, no, no thanks. Traveling? Not that great but I guess if I’m a mercenary… Denerim? Uhhhh not any time soon thanks. Kirkwall? I’m already here. Rosanna kept her thoughts to herself though, and waited for the next part.
“Oh hell I am not having seven kids, fuck that,” Rosanna blurted out in horror when that number appeared. The watchers all laughed. The Matchmaker ignored her as the next numbers appeared. 0, 4, and 3. “Not having seven, nope. Don’t care if the future says so.” Rosanna muttered, shaking her head. The Matchmaker simply made a motion and the spiral appeared. Rosanna called for it to stop and the number of passes was read.
Then it started. MASH in Thedas relied on the old style way of declaring your home in the future. Mansion, Apartment, Shack, House, so Rosanna didn’t get to see anything weird. Pity.
The ticks appeared, and the Matchmaker droned on what was marked off.
The first thing declared after a bit was she would have three kids. “Better then seven,” Rosanna declared, to the giggles of the watchers.
The next thing declared was apparently she would live in a mansion, which made hr uneasy. What could that mean? Then it said Kirkwall was where she would stay, and Rosanna thought of Fenris. It had to be, he had his deserted mansion…
But then he was marked off the list. Followed by Anders. And then…
“You will marry Varric Tethras,” the Matchmaker declared and Rosanna looked up to stare at the dwarf watching her. They locked eyes, even as the Matchmaker learned she would be a chemist.
Rosanna didn’t care. She was to busy staring at her future husband.
The universe had a sense of humour.

So back before BG3 took over my brain like ceremorphosis, I was pretty into Dragon Age and had started drafting an outline for a "Modern Girl in Thedas" fanfic in which my author self-insert replaced the Herald of Andraste. She was going to use her foreknowledge of events and her Western liberal arts education to attempt to speedrun both the plot of DAI and the Thedosian Enlightenment, respectively.
Things were NOT going to work out like she expected. It was to be a dark tale of hubris, butterfly effects, major character deaths, an Orlesian Revolution even bloodier than the French one, and two worlds' worth of unintended consequences so terrible that the working title was "Solas, Hold My Beer."
It's possible that I will return to it someday, depending on how DA4 goes -- my solution to the Solas Problem was to evacuate the population of Thedas to Earth (oops, sorry for bringing the Blight with us, my bad), and I gotta wait and see if that still fits with canon -- but in the interim I am definitely going to repurpose all my "attempts to speedrun the Enlightenment in a medieval fantasy setting, it goes poorly" ideas for my BG3 "Modern Girl in Faerun" fanfic.
Because Faerun? Absolutely riddled with terrible ideologies and institutions. It's slightly less of a crapsack world than Thedas, but it's still a medieval fantasy setting. While individual characters often express anachronistic viewpoints palatable to modern audiences, the cultures, systems of governance, etc. are generally much more period-appropriate.
Anyone coming from a modern Western democracy would suffer terrible culture shock and feel compelled to try to change things for the better. But if you've ever taken any "history of thought" courses from your university's Philosophy, Political Science, and Economics departments, then you know that we didn't get from there to here overnight.
A modern character's ideological framework alone would be enough to get them branded as batshit crazy, even if they kept the "I'm from another world and you're all fictional characters from an interactive story that I played as a game" stuff to themselves.

Chapter 6:Anxiety and Chosen Ones
  Summary:
I don't immediately remember what happened when I wake up. I come into consciousness slowly, feeling warm and relaxed and cozy in a bed, a blanket pulled over me. For a moment I just lie there, relaxing, and then I try to curl into it more - and there's a dull ache, a pain in my leg, and a sharp burning sensation in my hand, and I remember. Except the last thing I remember is fighting demons, trying to close the breach - and before I mean to I'm sitting up, breathing fast and staring around to work out where I am. I'm not in the Temple of Sacred Ashes anymore, I can tell that much. I'm in a bed, for one thing. It's a lot more comfortable than the last time I woke up. At least I'm not in a dungeon.
Arden wakes up in Haven after doing their best to seal the breach, and has to deal with the fact that social anxiety doesn't magically vanish when you appear inside a video game.
Have just published Chapter 6 of Made of Dreams and Strings! A bit later than planned - to keep with my fortnightly schedule it was due a week ago but I was ill, so that didn’t happen. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it!

mcit fic recs
ive been reading a lot of dragon age fanfic bc im writing a lot of dragon age fanfic so here's a list of the ones i've enjoyed recently!
Few Against the Wind - KiaStirling
9 Chapters, 74331 Words, Inquisition Era
the characterization of the canon characters is really excellent. its outside pov for now, mostly looking at the mcit through the eyes of solas, and its interesting to see that big brain of his think ab all the strangeness of the mc. mc also has to learn the language of trade and how to write so she get's a good alibi in the form of not being able to communicate why she's so weird and why she knows what she does
As a Little Bird Flies - Newbieauth
68 Chapters, 216 595 Words, Inquisition Era
includes sleep deprivation torture, so if that is Not For You i would skip that bit. it is not graphic and is far less revelatory in the angst than a lot of fics that include torture. very relationship centric, the mc is not very good at the whole fighting thing, but she does have a gun! a gun she must keep anyone from getting near so they dont figure out how to make more!
Local Woman Too Angry To Die - TLWillow
6 Chapters, 16 522 Words, Inquisition Era
is there a lot of it yet? no. is what's there fucking hilarious? yes. local woman IS too angry to die, doesn't thinks she's in dragon age, and definitely thinks she's been kidnapped by some mountain cult. where she lacks in knowledge she makes up in pure spite.
Identity - AMCanderly
5/6 Chapters, 22 098 Words, transmigrated in DA2 current story in Inquisition
mc was made tranquil in kirkwall before they could even attempt to influence the plot, somehow ends up at the conclave and gets the mark on their hand, reversing their rite of tranquility in the process. dealing with having your emotions taken away for like ten years and then finally getting them back is already hard enough, much harder when you're also expected to be the herald of andraste.

Behold! A new chapter!!!
Tumblr media
The muses blessed me with the will to write and insomnia.
Taking over the watch was not the best idea.
For the hundredth time, I look over my shoulder, hoping to get a glimpse of life coming from the tent. A leg twitch, a groan, snoring. Anything showing my companion would soon get up from slumber. But just like all other times, nothing but the wind disturbed the tent’s canvas. The guy was eerily quiet while sleeping. So much so, I wandered to it at least twice during my watch to make sure he hadn’t spontaneously died in the middle of the night. Because who knows what happens to Thedas’ NPCs while they are off screen, he might as well despawn while I’m not looking?
And to think until a day ago, I’d have killed for a moment of silence and alone time. Now that I had both, it was nothing short of unnerving. The wind trying its damnest to kill the fire and messing up how far I could see wasn’t doing wonders to improve the mood, either.
I wasn't trying to stare into the shadows, either. Not after I got the scare of my life when I spotted two silver dots watching me from inside the woods. It turned Honda chewed herself loose and decided on a night stroll, but now I made a conscious effort to not look farther than the ring of light cast by the fire. It's possible that the next shiny thing won't be friendly.
A coward’s move? Absolutely. But hey, I have no obligation to deal with anything angry or glowing — or both — for another thirteen days.
“Return a lost object, and we shall be even.” I repeat the words plaguing my mind since the moment I sat down, an uneasiness unrelated to the stillness of the night weighing in my gut. I could only think of one thing Fen’Harel could want. Because, as hard as I wished, Thedas had some other six-eyed wolf entity unmentioned by the lore I hyper-fixated in, I had to face the fact that I fucked up. Bad. I only had two weeks to figure out how to complete the deal. It was that, or try surviving the upcoming years.
I rub my eyes with a groan, head falling back on Durgen’s rump — who self assigned as my pillow after being freed by my anarchist dracolisk. A tail hits my face in protest before he wiggles on the ground, trying to make himself comfortable again.
The urge to move and a streak of annoyance strike me as soon as the sky lightens. Fully aware what I’ll do is both childish and ungrateful, I get up and wander up to the tent, making no effort to muffle my steps or avoid cracking twigs under my boots. Sun’s out, the sky’s gonna be torn a new one in a few days, there’s no time to lose! But of course he doesn’t know this, and that’s why he can sleep like a rock. I’m about to pull out my harmonica to start “The Song that Never Ends” when, as if sensing the malignant intent in the air, the tent flap opens.
