M4M&I — Day 3 : Bow

If you are new to this space, or to my answer feed, you may not realise that I like language. Not specifically the English language, because it is — at times — insane and crazy making and will drive you nuts. But I like using language to write, and I like using it to get a point across when I believe the point to be important.

And I like playing with it — as I said yesterday, I blame part of that on my parents who exposed me to the likes of Flanders & Swann and Tom Lehrer in my youth and my formative days and the rest is an on-going fascination with people who take words and mess with them — puns, double meanings, dangling modifiers and all the other things that some people find entertaining and others find to be boring as all get out.

There are also a bunch of other things to like about language, one of which is that — unlike humanity and the animal kingdom — you can see the evolution of language happening in near real time.

If you go back fifty years (or so) you can see text speech wasn’t even a thing — because, obviously, texting wasn’t even a thing. Now? Because people don’t want to type out words on a phone, they abbreviate them and that has spread to every day speech.

You hear people — well some people — saying LOL, or WTF, or FTW. Something you’d never have heard before the advent of mobile phones. And of course, you hear people — some people using the term “hastag” in every day speech — something Twitter (or maybe Facebook) introduced to the lexicon of our time.

And this has literally happened in the past ten, fifteen years or so — we’ve seen language evolve in front of our eyes. The internet has changed language beyond anything it used to be. But if you go back two hundred years and ask someone then to look at language a hundred years ago or a hundred years before that they would wonder what was going on.

Language evolves in real time, and you can see the changes in society with the changes in language.

Sixty, fifty, even forty years ago there was language that was acceptable that no one (well no decent person) would use now. Because society has changed enough to make the language unacceptable.

I realise that I have kind of drifted off the topic of me and on to a wider topic of society, but I am about to bring it back because more than anything else it is our use of language that defines us — language is how we communicate with the world.

Sure, some people would say it is our thoughts that make us who we are, and I have to admit they are not wrong. We are the sum of our memories, and we are defined by our thoughts.

But unless we communicate our thoughts, no one but us knows what they are — and, for the most part, we communicate our thoughts via language.

And our choice of language — the words we pick — when expressing our thoughts tells people as much about us as the thoughts themselves.

Do you say “crusade” or “jihad”? Do you say “homosexual” or “gay”? Do you say “state” or “government” or some other term?

Language reveals who we are, as well as allowing us to communicate our thoughts.

And as such it is the most powerful tool in our arsenal.

So for that, I think it should take a bow.

But not this specific bow, because I was going to use that in next week’s archery contest.

I know you are not answering questions because some people are way too rude. But I have to ask, do you still ship Bughead? Cause most of the time I see you talking about how you want Jug to fall in love with Tabitha or being friends with people who says that Betty is the worst thing ever to Jughead and how awful her actions were always with him, or how awful she is now (yeah she is part of the fbi and have done questionable shit and no, you don’t have to like everyone actions, but some people look like are trying to not even thing on what she is living, just to say why she doesn’t “deserve” Jughead, which btw she helped him with his student the other episode).

Sorry if you think this is rude. I just really want to know what you think cause I have been following for a long time And seeing those posts and you interacting made me want to know your view too.

So, the reason I normally don’t answer asks is because I’m tired a lot and preoccupied a lot and also on mobile a lot and fuck typing on mobile. I don’t answer asks as I get them, I answer them in flurries all at once on what I call Ask Days, which come with no warning and leave just as quickly. Although sometimes I will be irked and answer a single ask, like today, in a pet peeve sort of way, not an anger way, just, y’know, an eye-twitch, someone-is-wrong-on-the-internet, um-ACTUALLY way.

Now, I don’t think this ask is rude--in fact it’s quite polite, so mad props there, I greatly value politeness--but it does...irk me a bit. Because, yeah, I do still ship bughead; I’ve reblogged posts of them within the past week, including a post where I complain about all of my bughead gif set ideas requiring footage of their romantic reunion that I still don’t have (seriously, I have a minimum of three that I want to make but lack the footage for, footage that I know is coming but I wish I didn’t have to wait 3+ more months for, I’m really going to be that one Sirius Black gif when they kiss again). Now, I don’t expect you to have an encyclopedic knowledge of my blog or anything, that’d be insane, but I do feel like it’s obvious in my history that I still ship bughead. It’s still my Riverdale otp, even though 5x10 tried really hard to kneecap it (I know this is not the common interpretation, but it is mine, and man, I was SO BUMMED, you don’t even know. I thought I was either getting canon Jughead/Tabitha or a really good bughead moment and then I got the opposite of both and it ruined my night, SUCH a bummer).

As for Jughead and Tabitha, I also ship them in addition to bughead, as well as Jughead and Tabitha and Betty (ideal endgame right there, lbr, investigative power throuple ftw). I can like two things at once, y’know? And I would have really enjoyed seeing them explored for realsies over the Toni 2.0 scenario we got, because I think it would have been mega cute and also they both could have learned stuff from that relationship, I’m sure, and then remained friends afterwards (also it guarantees more screen time for Tabitha, something I’m worried about losing once Betty and Jughead are back on the case together). I like them together, so I like to talk about them together, and I like to show my enthusiasm for them. It’s just how I enjoy things.

As for your concerns about the company I keep, so to speak, I have actually spoken to those people, for the most part, and that stuff about Betty being the worst, Betty not deserving Jughead, etc is not something I’ve heard them say. Perhaps you interpreted some of their words this way, but I know that all of the people I reblog from genuinely like Betty, many in fact love her (minus the FBI stuff, but we all have beef with that, don’t we?). There have been frustrations with the cheating and post time skip ba stuff, yes, but those are both very loaded scenarios, and people are going to bring their own baggage to them that shapes their opinions, sometimes in ways other people disapprove of. I know this is true for me, which is why I don’t talk about it much; I don’t want to have to air all my dirty laundry to justify my opinions, which I know fandom would demand I do, and honestly fuck that. But, through it all, there is a love for Betty and a love for bughead.

tl;dr Yes, I still ship bughead, and I ship Jughead and Tabitha, and I assure you that the people I talk to like Betty and bughead as well.

hello! i wanted to ask if you had any gameplay/editing tips and suggestions for new simblrs? i really love your sims and the aesthetic of the posts you make! thank you

thank uuuu!! im gonna answer ur questions under the cut bc it’s a long one!

for gameplay tips im lammme bc i struggle a lot, im stuck between “i need some guidance and rules otherwise idk what to do” but also “im failing to complete the rules why am i doing a challenge i wanna be free” so ye….. other than that, don’t hesitate to use poses, and um i love taking pics outdoors (when it’s sunny!!! oasis springs ftw) bc the lighting is the best outside imo! also when i take pics i zoom the tab camera to the max!

for editing, u just gotta find a psd that goes w ur aesthetic, im really into colorful and smooth post and that’s how i like my posts, but im also v in love with some other blog’s mystical,dark and sharp edits/gp posts! it’s funny how ur editing will set the mood for ur blog so think about what u want ppl to think when they see ur posts C^: my faq gives links on what i use to edit! photoshop is a lifesaver and my content got better when i transitioned from gimp to ps (i got it for free to answer another nonny, i don’t remember where i got it from tho :/)! eventho it’s not a necessity for a blog to be hella good, it helps!

as for new simblrs, i think v strongly that quality>quantity so if u end up posting only once a day but u’re sure that u love this post, it’s better than publishing too much posts that ppl will have a “meh” feeling about! but i gotta say that some blogs still manage to post a lot of v good posts everyday (im lookin at u jess) but they’re quite rare! so ye quality>quantity imo!! remember to tag ur posts, also don’t get discouraged by the lack of notes, i remember in 2017 when i started my blog i had no more than 5 notes during a few months on my posts but eventually u’ll find what makes ur blog stand out!

also interact w others, when u like something say it!!! every single comment is v heartwarming and even if a simblr doesn’t answer, just know that they read it and appreciated it! find urself some mutuals that share the same aesthetic (or not, it’s up to u, u just gotta appreciate each other’s content!)! be kind but also be urself!!!

and last thing, about urls: there’s plenty of cute sim related ones out here, and i love them but don’t feel obligated to have one, to have the word “sim” somewhere in it! bc imo ppl will remember u more easily if u stand out! at least i think they do! i know i get mixed up between some blogs that have sim cities names spelled differently as their url! eventho they’re cute! :^(

April 14th, 2018

I’m in Los Angeles.

I’ve been here since February 10th. So...a little over two months? People here still consider me new and fresh, and they’re not wrong. I’ve been doing a pretty great job at learning the new geography, all the neighborhoods and freeways.

Let me update you.

I’ve been living with Jordon who went to Bradley University with me. But I’ve been sleeping on an air mattress in his living room. Totally fine, I’m pretty low-maintenance anyway. Except I had told him I did not plan on crashing in his living for any longer than a month and up until now it had been over two months. Cue liar-anxiety. Then we find out that his roommate Drake will be moving in with his girlfriend in May/June and that his room may be up for grabs. I’m super interested and thus I’m staying in this living room, hoping to squat and slide into Drake’s room. Now, Jordon tells me he has a friend from high school who is moving to LA in June that he prefers to live with. Totally fine. Cue apartment-hunting anxiety again.

Now, my work situation. I moved here to do production work, but it doesn’t pay the bills (yet), so I got hired as a server at Tatsu Ramen at the end of February. The pay is pretty darn good. $13/hr and tips are about 1/3rd times the pay and I’m working close to full time. Insurance once I’ve hit 3 months. Almost everybody is really fun and sweet. Emily is the second newest hire and probably someone I can consider a friend (the first I’ve made in LA outside of Jordon!) She let me crash on her couch after a sleep deprived night and Jordon was hosting a loud brunch party. Vince is someone I would recently consider a friend! We’ve been hanging out quite a bit this past weekend and he’s a pleasant person to do stuff with! Sadly, he’s moving to New York City later this week so it kinda explains the accelerated friendship fun.

He came out drinking with me at some bougie place called The Bungalow that charged $15 for a margarita and $9 for a PBR. Emily met up with us after she got off of work and arrived at 1:30am, which apparently is when LA bars decide to close and stop serving alcohol. So slightly drunk Vince and me and stone-cold sober Emily walk down to Santa Monica beach, because I’m drunk and I hadn’t been to the beach in the two months I’ve been in LA. It was pitch black, sand cold as fuck. Vince and I (separately) break the pee seal in the sand dunes. Public urination FTW. We continue walking towards the ocean, I walk ahead of them in a drunk euphoria. I fucking love the ocean. I kick off my shoes and feel the wet, stiff sand under my feet. I only go ankle deep into the water but I’m content. Behind us, it seems like we’re not the only people in the entirety of Los Angeles who like to come to the beach at night. But it’s dark and the lights of the pier make them into indiscernible shadows. The lights also reflected off of the wet sand, like an upside down world mirrored from the pier. I’m wearing Vince’s denim jacket, barefoot and impossibly happy. My friends are taking pictures, laughing and playing in the water. I hope they were as I happy as I was.

Today, we had plans to head to Manhattan Beach. However, Emily backed out, still feeling the after effects of last night. I showered, got dressed. If anything, I would go alone. I don’t mind doing things on my own. It’s a common theme in my life. Then Vince texts me back saying he’s down. I drive to his place and the sweet man brings out a bottle of water for each of us and recommends we eat at a place nearby called The Public School. It’s cute and school themed, though I spent most of my life trying to avoid school themed things. Before meeting up with Vince, I was honestly nervous hanging out one-on-one with him. I just didn’t know who or what to expect outside of the comfort zone of Tatsu or drinking as a social buffer. And to my surprise, he’s actually really easy to hang out with. I don’t feel a need to impress him and yet I feel like I do. Conversation isn’t forced, it in fact flows really smoothly. And we don’t even crutch on Tatsu talk. We talk about hobbies, thoughts on LA and New York, families. Actually. Now that I think about it, we talked a lot about me. Vince and I are going to the Getty Center Museum tomorrow afternoon. I need to remind myself to ask Vince about himself more.

We also went to the Museum of Jurassic Technology yesterday too! That was fucking weird. But mutually agreed the best $8 spent. Cheaper than a can of PBR. They had such weird artifacts...and facts. Miniature models of mobile homes, paintings of the Russian dogs sent to space, a garden with tea and doves. “I can not think of a better person to have done this with,” Vince concluded after we exited (I only mention this part verbatim because people? like? hanging out with me?). We were supposed to finally hit up Manhattan Beach at this point, but I had an appointment to drop off my new apartment deposit and rent so we agreed to take a short intermission as I dropped him off to his apartment.

I arrive at my new apartment, which is located in a beautiful little family neighborhood. It seems like it has great air and it’s quiet. I would be absolutely ecstatic to be moving into this place if it weren’t a 45 minute commute on my way to work. I guess it balances out the 15 minute commute on my way back from work at 3:00am. And it makes me feel a little better that my roommate Hillary would be commuting over an hour. The apartment itself is super spacious and has beautiful hardwood floors and appliances.

We drop off the checks, go through the inspection and we plan on moving in tomorrow. Luckily, I only have the things that I can pack into my car, so I don’t have much to move. Except that Vince is giving me his mattress, bed frame, TV stand and possibly his TV so I have to find some way to move those.

When we finish all the apartment things, Vince calls me and tells me he actually had something come up and that he won’t be able to make the beach with me. Initially I’m disappointed but then I resolve to go anyway alone. That was my plan from the beginning and actually, this day folded pretty well. I got quality time with Vince and I still get to go to the beach. Parking was a bit of a nightmare but I eventually find a really tight spot (and tight as in literally, not in the dudebro connotation).

I get there and I’m in love. The sand between my toes, the wind, the air, the birds and the ocean waves crashing. The sky is completely spotless and blue, save for the occasional aircraft. Even though it’s a beautiful Saturday evening, the beach is pretty spread out and spacious between everyone. I easily find a spot to sit and enjoy the ocean without people close to me and no one in my view of the sunset. 9/10 absolutely would go again, despite the 30-40minute drive. Only glaring negative was the random middle aged guy who started talking to me. I only engaged in conversation once he mentioned he was from Minnesota (how can I turn away a fellow Minnesotan). But this guy talked to me forever, basically until the sun literally went down. Angry face emoji. It’s fine, except I could not tell what he wanted? Was he just being friendly? Was he trying to hit on me? Was he networking? Why me? The answer to that last one (or I guess all of them) is “because you’re a girl alone on the beach.”

I’m writing a lot. I’m aware. But one last thing I should catch you up on is Jun. He comes last because I honestly have mixed feelings about him. So we had a bit of a pre-dating thing going. You know, where the two of you flirt and are hyperaware when y’all brush up against each other and stuff? We were drinking after work at Emily’s place with a few other coworkers and after everything died down, we crashed on her couch. We stayed up talking for another couple hours, stroking hands and touching until he gets up and kisses me. I’m fucking giddy because I’m kissing Jun and Jun is kissing me. He puts a hand on my breast and starts playing with my nipple, which I put an immediate stop to because fucking Josh (one of our coworkers) is sleeping on the floor near us and Jun’s got me physically wanting to climb him like a tree.

The next night we both work together again and he invites me to come back to his place. We sit and chat for a while over a couple beers before picking up where we left off the night before. I want to keep the dirty deets to myself but in a nutshell, we fucked three times. I came once, which honestly surprised me because it took me a hell of a long time to come with Matt. Jun and I also did it three times without protection. Which yes dear reader, I know it’s fucking stupid and this is the second guy I’ve done that with; having gotten caught up in the moment and just submitting to the moment without caring about the consequences. But both times I eventually convinced myself to take Plan B. I also know that Plan B is not a form of birth control. I still have two months worth of the pill from when I was dating Matt, but I won’t start them unless I’m consistently sexually active. Anyway, Jun. He tells me he doesn’t want anything serious. He tells me he’s going out for drinks with a girl the next night. Twice now he’s been too tired to hang out after work (which is definitely warranted because we’re both up til 3-4am every fucking night closing at Tatsu). As far as it looks, doesn’t seem like any more than a one and done. Which is a bummer. I could mentally/emotionally prepare for a no-strings-attached deal, I just wanted to be with Jun in some capacity but it seems like once we smashed, he didn’t want the same. I can hear my mom’s voice saying some shit like “Guys only want one thing and once they get it they’re out.” First of all, everyone has a fluid amount of sexual drive but everyone also has emotional needs and connections with people. I could easily fuck and chuck Eric from Peoria and be exactly the kind of “guy” my mom thinks guys are. But then there was fucking Ravi who I fucked one time and the guy would not leave me alone. He relentlessly messaged me on Facebook, found my Instagram, Snapchat? Some guys don’t just fuck once and leave, some stick around for more. It’s dependent. Which is why is sucks that the situation with Jun is what it is. But looking at “fate” or whatever, it makes sense. There were just small instances where I felt like I was being told, “hey this isn’t meant to happen.” Things that are meant to happen will be pushed in the right direction. Like today with Vince and the beach. Life told me that I should hang out with Vince by getting lunch and experiencing The Museum of Jurassic Technology, and then it told me that Manhattan Beach is just for me.

Despite my lack of romantic success, I feel good. Things seem to be falling into the right place at the right times. I have an apartment, I have people who I enjoy being with and doing stuff with. I have someone who believes in my skills and my potential (Vince, who has been pushing for my promotion at Tatsu and providing me some serious support.) Everything that will be will be.

I just remembered something that Vince told me last night at the Bungalow that I want to write down for my fragile ego’s sake:

“Apparently you have a fan base at Tatsu. I had a customer come in yesterday and ask me ‘is Juliet working tonight? I have some friends I want to bring in to meet her, is she working this weekend?”

Vince couldn’t tell me the name or face of the guy who asked but I am beyond thrilled/happy/giddy that a CUSTOMER knows my name, my face and LIKES me enough to want to have his friends meet me *flips hair.* As someone who obsessively checks the Yelp reviews for mentions of a “cute helpful Asian waitress” or my actual name, this will be an integral part of my self-esteem :)

Unlike Astarion, her head was empty. Void of all thought... it was better that way, if she were being honest. But clearly Astarion had other plans, drawn from her mindless state rather unwillingly as she hummed a soft sound as if she hadn't heard what he said. His words processed a moment later, however, and before he could repeat himself she found herself speaking.

"They were a vivid, beautiful gold.. with black surrounding them.." she answered his question softly, shifting in her bed to look up to where he slept. "...do you? Remember, I mean..."

Swapfell Dawn is my AU and my take on on the term “Swapfell” and has nothing to do with it’s original creator Kkhopangg(KH) or Fellswap.

The comics I’m doing use the base of my AU. They are different to the popular versions and their story and personality belong to me. I was inspired by other artists on their design, but I developed them all alone.

Do you have a masterlist for Swapfell Dawn/Sympathy? Yes, but it’s only available for PC users… I am too lazy to make an extra post that I have to update too… sorry.

My Swapfells are inspired by yours! Credit always the person with the original idea. I also stated that KH had the original idea. But I didn’t know them back then and just started a story with the term “Swapfell = A Swap that fell”

I love the swapfells because of you! You are the Creator of Swapfell for me! I feel very, very honored about this statement, but it’s wrong in some way. The first idea was given by KH and I don’t want to take their title. And I don’t want people to force to take it. But I am very happy that I could make this AU interesting for you. Since that Swapfell/Fellswap debate I am even more determined to call my Swapfells “Sfd!sans aka. Black” and “sfd!papyrus aka Pup”. They belong to the Swapfell Dawn universe that splits from the mainstream line, so I won’t disturb the peace there. Of couse you can see it as your headcanon for Swapfell, I will feel more than honored. After all there was no real plot for them so far and this is just my take on…. Mweh

No. Because I am still working on Dawn and I don’t want others to use my idea for them in their stories. If it’s about fanart/fanfictions for my story then it’s okay. But don’t make your own thing with them.

My Swapfell Dawn bois are known as “Black” and “Pup”. Pup calls his Sans “M'lord, sire, lord or Sans”… Black calls him “Mutt, Pap, Papy (special cases), Papyrus or other creative names to degrade him”

Suggestions and HCs for the SFD bois? You can write me about them, but don’t expect me to adapt them :)

There are different designs for your SFD!Bois… I change them from time to time. Sometimes depending on what I display and if it happened before or after Sympathy. Sympathy influences the final design of the Swapfell Dawn bois.

Can I call your AU still Swapfell? Yes, but since it’s my Au with MY story, MY design and MY interpretation, I’ve decided to give it an extra name so people won’t get confused about it anymore. I’m not using the design of others anymore.

Phone calls FTW: staffer says call every day

tl;dr: Senator staffer says calls are more effective than letters, and calls get counted each day.

If you don’t have the spoons to call, you don’t have the spoons. No big. Put on your own oxygen mask. But if you can make yourself call--I’m going to try to--here is a case from Sonya Huber, the organizer of the disabilitymarch, on why calls are key:

From a high-level staffer for a Senator:

There are two things that all Democrats should be doing all the time right now, and they're by far the most important things. You should NOT be bothering with online petitions or emailing.

1. The best thing you can do to be heard and get your congressperson to pay attention is to have face-to-face time - if they have town halls, go to them. Go to their local offices. If you're in DC, try to find a way to go to an event of theirs. Go to the "mobile offices" that their staff hold periodically (all these times are located on each congressperson's website). When you go, ask questions. A lot of them. And push for answers. The louder and more vocal and present you can be at those the better.

2. But, those in-person events don't happen every day. So, the absolute most important thing that people should be doing every day is calling. You should make 6 calls a day: 2 each (DC office and your local office) to your 2 Senators & your 1 Representative.

The staffer was very clear that any sort of online contact basically gets immediately ignored, and letters pretty much get thrown in the trash (unless you have a particularly strong emotional story - but even then it's not worth the time it took you to craft that letter). Calls are what all the congresspeople pay attention to. Every single day, the Senior Staff and the Senator get a report of the 3 most-called-about topics for that day at each of their offices (in DC and local offices), and exactly how many people said what about each of those topics. They're also sorted by zip code and area code. She said that Republican callers generally outnumber Democrat callers 4-1, and when it's a particular issue that single-issue-voters pay attention to (like gun control, or planned parenthood funding, etc...), it's often closer to 11-1, and that's recently pushed Republican congressmen on the fence to vote with the Republicans. In the last 8 years, Republicans have called, and Democrats haven't.

So, when you call:

A) When calling the DC office, ask for the Staff member in charge of whatever you're calling about ("Hi, I'd like to speak with the staffer in charge of Healthcare, please") - local offices won't always have specific ones, but they might. If you get transferred to that person, awesome. If you don't, that's ok - ask for their name, and then just keep talking to whoever answered the phone. Don't leave a message (unless the office doesn't pick up at all - then you can...but it's better to talk to the staffer who first answered than leave a message for the specific staffer in charge of your topic).

B) Give them your zip code. They won't always ask for it, but make sure you give it to them, so they can mark it down. Extra points if you live in a zip code that traditionally votes for them, since they'll want to make sure they get/keep your vote.

C) If you can make it personal, make it personal. "I voted for you in the last election and I'm worried/happy/whatever" or "I'm a teacher, and I am appalled by Betsy DeVos," or "as a single mother" or "as a white, middle class woman," or whatever.

D) Pick 1-2 specific things per day to focus on. Don't go down a whole list - they're figuring out what 1-2 topics to mark you down for on their lists. So, focus on 1-2 per day. Ideally something that will be voted on/taken up in the next few days, but it doesn't really matter - even if there's not a vote coming up in the next week, call anyway. It's important that they just keep getting calls.

E) Be clear on what you want - "I'm disappointed that the Senator..." or "I want to thank the Senator for their vote on..." or "I want the Senator to know that voting in _____ way is the wrong decision for our state because..." Don't leave any ambiguity.

F) They may get to know your voice/get sick of you - it doesn't matter. The people answering the phones generally turn over every 6 weeks anyway, so even if they're really sick of you, they'll be gone in 6 weeks. From experience since the election: If you hate being on the phone & feel awkward (which is a lot of people) don't worry about it - there are a bunch of scripts (Indivisible has some, there are lots of others floating around these day). After a few days of calling, it starts to feel a lot more natural. Put the 6 numbers in your phone (all under P – Politician. An example is McCaskill MO, Politician McCaskill DC, Politician Blunt MO, etc...) which makes it really easy to click down the list each day.
