MAYNCIENT :: Day 10 - Promise

"I told you I'd be back for them."

Mnemosyne (angel) belongs to @hermits-hovel. The explanation of this sequence got *very* long so I'm putting it under a cut but MASSIVE ARIADNE LORE DUMP LMAO

Amaurotine social conventions discourage the expression of extreme emotions, which could make the processing of things like grief and alienation difficult when there isn't a cultural framework to acknowledge those feelings in the first place. Ariadne, who lost her brother, Midas, in an accident, has a very difficult time adjusting to his loss - most Amaurotines have only experienced death through the deliberate choice of returning to the Star, which is universally considered a beautiful and respectable event. This disconnection between the grief that Ariadne felt at his passing was at odds with the pride that she was expected to show, and she withdrew from almost every aspect of her life - stopped going to theatre rehearsals, barely showed up to her classes, avoided her friends and loved ones (there was a fairly dramatic breakup with Hades at this point after he refused to fetch her brother from the Aetherial Sea - he didn't understand why she felt so despondent about Midas' death which. Boy howdy does that become a Plot Point Later) (he did try to help but he absolutely was not equipped to do so).

Over time and with the very patient help of her mentor, Halmarut, she slowly rejoined society after graduating by taking on a student-teacher job at Halmarut's personal request. She still wasn't fully comfortable being open with other people after her withdrawal and instead developed a sort of party-girl persona to interact with others. As long as she was having Fun, she didn't have to think about everything she had lost in the meantime. She met the rest of her eventual friends and lovers in the GAP at this point, starting with Timoria, who she first met in a bathroom at a party while she was crying and Mori and Ari's woo-girl energy fed off each other as they navigated Amaurot.

Of course, new interpersonal relationships and dynamics means More Feelings and Ariadne still hadn't really ever stopped grieving so she ends up easily overwhelmed by her emotions, which caused her to act out in erratic and sometimes self-destructive ways, including the ever-green clown daughter favorite Causing Problems on Purpose. When the inevitable consequences of these actions backfire on her in small or less small ways, she tries to drown them out by escalating the FUN and attempting to block out her own memories to get through the day, first by narcotics and when that doesn't work, she pressures her friend Mnemosyne, whose literal job is preserving memories, into the experimental field of removing memories. She isn't necessarily just banking sad memories, but anything that causes her to feel what she determines is Too Many Feelings.

Mnemo is uncomfortable with this, as it's not really what he is supposed to be doing with his powers, but Ariadne assures him that she will eventually come back to collect the archived memories, which Mnemo preserves in a crystal he developed for this very purpose. She spends years not coming back for those memories, though, instead compounding the problem by increasingly dropping memories off with Mnemo until it becomes clear to her girlfriend, Minthe, that something is terribly wrong with Ariadne's memory. Minthe confronts Ari about this, and Ari promises that she'll go and fetch the memories from the crystal (we've been affectionately calling it Ariadne's cringe compilation crystal) (there's a playlist).

Going back for the memories had its own issues and inevitable fallout, but Ariadne did try to regain those memories and work through them with her friends - one at a time, based on what she feels she can deal with. She doesn't manage to get all of them back before the End of Days - meaning that there's a memory crystal floating around with some Very Strong Feelings that's a repeated McGuffin through the eras in blorboverse.

thinking about how if bianca hadn't died, nico would still exhibit a lack of a brain to mouth filter. like imagine hades explaining greek mythology to his kids while they take a walk through the underworld, and 10 year old nico goes:

bianca is swatting at him in a panic to shut the fuck up and hades remains quiet before remarking that he is not exactly sure.

Okay, I've been discussing ideas about a PJO Psych crossover and it is now time to share my findings

Okay, so once upon a time Henry Spencer met a woman who when posing as a mortal went by the name Madeleine but she was actually a goddess, they had a kid, she was a minor goddess, so she was able to stay for a while, but eventually she left.

Yes, of COURSE Shawn thinks it's his Dad's fault

The goddess was Mnemosyne, the Greek goddess of MEMORY and the mother of the muses (works perfectly, right??!??!?!)

And Gus is his Satyr protector!!!

Henry does all the same training with Shawn to be a cop and such

Shawn gets his eidetic memory from his mother, the goddess of memory

I've also decided he gets taskmaster powers (can do anything he sees from memory) because that fucks hard

Shawn gets the record of fastest kid to get claimed as his mother officially claims him before he even leaves for camp

Here's her symbol by the way!

Anyway, when Shawn gets to camp, he's a total little shit

At first, the other campers think he's just not being claimed, depending on how you work the timeline here? Percy is pissed

Then Gus and Shawn explain that he actually got claimed before he even showed up (Percy vows to personally thank his godly parent for being an actually decent person)

So, they ask who it is, and Shawn WILL NOT TELL THEM

Why? Because it's funner that way!

They have an ongoing tally and betting pool of who his godly parent is, no one guesses it

He also keeps sneaking Mr D alcohol because it's funny and no one but Dionysus is happy about that

Gus is still his best friend that he drags into things, obv, they probably end up soul bound just like percy and grover

Juliet is a child of Athena

Lassie is a child of Ares and if your going by the show there's a super funny joke about how he looks exactly like Hephaestus but is the son of the guy he hates most, haha

Shawn KILLS at capture the flag

No one believes him when he says he doesn't have charm speak

Instead of becoming a SB Psychic, he ends up being this crime solving traveling cryptid (he's gotta keep moving bc monsters) (dont worry, he still visits camp pretty often and likes to drop by Santa Barbara to solve crimes and piss off his dad)

There was also a lengthy convo about each gods opinion of him of any of you wanna hear that

Shawn is the muse of doing weird shit

Also art lover shawn 🔛🔝, he's got plenty of muse talent, yall

Instead of pretending to be a psychic, he's pretending to NOT be muse adjacent

For how often one hears about Zeus's seven marriages in Hesiod's Theogony, it's worth noting that Hesiod actually only calls two of those seven goddesses wives, probably suggests marriage for a third, but gives not the slightest indication that the other four unions were marriages. Let's take a look at the text.

"Zeus as king of the gods made Metis his first wife (alochos), wisest among gods and mortal men".

"Second he married sleek Themis, who bore the watchers, Lawfulness, Justice, and flourishing Peace … and the Fates, to whom Zeus the resourceful gave the most privilege" The word Hesiod actually uses is "ἠγάγετο" = lead, carry, fetch, bring. So no explicit mention to marriage is made, though it makes sense to interpret it as such, as Zeus leading Themis to Olympos in the way a wife is supposed to be brought home. In the only instance of someone taking a spouse before the regime of Zeus in the Theogony, Perses is said to have brought/led (ἠγάγετ᾽) Asteria "to his great house to be called his dear wife (akoitis)", so the same word used in reference to Zeus and Themis here explicitly refers to marriage earlier in the text.

"Eurynome, a daughter of Oceanus with lovely looks, bore him the three Graces, Aglaia, Euphrosyne, and fair Thalia." No indication of marriage here.

"And he came to the bed of Demeter abundant in nourishment, and she bore the white-armed Persephone." No mention of marriage here either, and possibly meaningful that Zeus is the one who goes to her bed rather than vice versa. Well, not actually meaningful, but it sure doesn't sound like a marital or long-term relationship.

"Again, he took love of Memory with her lovely hair, from whom the Muses with their golden diadems were born, nine of them…" + "[the Muses] were born in Pieria to Memory, queen of the foothills of Eleutherae, in union with the father, the son of Kronos; … Nine nights Zeus the resourceful lay with her, going up to her holy bed far away from the immortals." So Zeus loved (ἐράσσατο) Mnemosyne, and visited her, to her own home and apart from the other gods, for nine nights. No part of this indicates a marriage.

"Leto gave birth to Apollo and Artemis the archer, lovely children above all the celestials, in shared intimacy with Zeus who bears the aegis." Again, no mention of marriage. Similar language is used to describe Zeus's sexual unions with Semele and Alkmene.

"Last of all he made Hera his fertile wife (akoitis), and she bore Hebe and Ares and Eileithyia, sharing intimacy with the king of gods and men." The language used to describe the sexual union is the same, except that Hera is also made a wife.

Is it possible to interpret all of these unions as marriages? Certainly, but that's just not something Hesiod actually claims. It is just as possible to only consider Metis, Themis and Hera as actual wives, or even just Metis and Hera, though personally I'd consider all three. Notice, too, that only these three have their positions on the list specified and clearly identified: first, second and last.
