Get Out (2017)

Written and directed by Jordan Peele in his directorial debut, this psychological horror film is about a young African-American man named Chris Washington, whose weekend visit to his white girlfriend’s family leads him to become ensnared in a horrific conspiracy.

Daniel Kaluuya plays the lead, while Allison Williams plays Chris’ girlfriend Rose Armitage. The supporting cast includes: Bradley Whitford as neurosurgeon Dean Armitage, Catherine Keener as psychiatrist Missy Armitage, Caleb Landry Jones as Rose’s brother Jeremy Armitage, Stephen Root as art dealer Jim Hudson and Lil Rel Howery as Chris’ best friend/TSA officer Rod Williams.

Daniel Kaluuya (whose breakthrough performance garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Actor) is arguably the most visceral actor in recent years given that he conveys a slew of emotions that complement his character’s justifiable uneasiness to white hospitality. Allison Willams (in her film debut) is a mind-boggling representation of a character whose supposed normalcy masks her underlying sociopathic qualities. Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener not only do an excellent job at employing and foreshadowing the technique of deception, but you wouldn’t expect to see them play a couple of characters with hidden sinister intentions.

The script (which won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay) is ingeniously written in such a way that gives the horror genre an opportunity to explore social/racial issues metaphorically. In other words, Jordan Peele brilliantly uses horror as a vehicle for racism at its most diabolical.

In terms of observing the social commentary of the film, we sense an unsettling feeling in a wealthy white community where the (Black) protagonist doesn’t seem to belong. In the case of the overly accommodating Armitage family, they are part of an ancestral cult that believes black people possess more stamina. On that note, they kidnap African-American men and women to achieve a twisted form of physical enhancement through hypnosis (in the form of Missy’s teacup and spoon) and surgical procedure. The African-Americans in turn are forced into robotic captivity (a modernized version of slavery) by the mental transplantation of their white captors.

On a particularly symbolic note, this film eerily (and stunningly) depicts the consciousness of a black person fading into an infinite vacuum called the “Sunken Place”. This effectively makes the victim unable to scream for help (or even warn another victim to “GET OUT!”), while the white person controls the body.

Apart from the suspenseful storyline, Jordan Peele also weaves in some biting social satire. Unlike other horror films, this one is recognized for its complex yet bizarre themes of challenged racial stereotypes. However, the inclusion of an outspoken comic relief in the form of Rod keeps the movie light.

The soundtrack includes some distinctive Swahili lyrics that roughly translate into tribal chants of caution. On top of that, the song “Redbone” by Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) is heard during the opening scene.

Lastly, this film is a startling reminder to remain vigilant to the insidious dangers of a potentially lingering prejudice lurking beneath the surface of our progressive society. All in all, I recommend this fresh, terrifying social thriller to everyone.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to Valerie Patrice Vaughn born September 26, 1977.

She passed away 1/16/23 due to cancer per Vaughn's family and friends. There is very little detail about Valerie's life. She was remembered as a sweet, kind, fun loving, and honest woman with deep humility.

Valerie was Aaliyah's best friend (since 1st grade) and normally kept her personally life private.

When CosmoGIRL! October/November 1999 Issue interviewed Aaliyah, they asked who does she hang with, Aaliyah responded:

A: I have two friends I’d say are my best friends - [Tommy Jeans model] Kidada Jones and Valerie Vaughn, who I’ve been friends with since first grade. I’m a homebody, so I’ll go to K's house and just hang out and watch movies and bake cookies. I’m also close with my choreographer Fatima, Missy [Elliott], Lil’ Kim and Da Brat - we all call each other and hang out at Missy’s house or go to a club and kick it. {credit: cametogivelove)

Eurus: Hey listen, I know I said you're my idol but what you said to Miss Hudson back there was mean and maybe you sorta made me jealous.

Adler: It was fun to tease you and her though, just think of this shopping spree as a sorry for making you feel jealous and to buy Miss Hudson something.

Eurus:... really? So you're not going to take Sherly away from me?

Adler laughing a little: You really love your brother, do you?

Eurus: *nodding*

Adler: *finding a blue comfy dress with spider web designs* You seem like the alternative type and this fit looks perfect with your tiara. It even matches with your scarf.

Eurus trying it on: Hmm, I think it suits me. *thinking* Is she leading me to a trap or is she being genuine? Whatever, I'm hanging out with my idol!

Adler seeing her in deep thought: What's holding you back Eurus, I see potential in you.

Eurus: I'm not the smartest in the family so, I made sure to only play it safe with Sherly, I guess it affected me. Besides, you're the type of person I wanna be, and I'm just the girl who stayed in her family's mansion for years. I'm not an amazing person.

Adler: I don't think that's true though, you may be different from your brother but you're still an amazing person on your own.

Eurus: You're just saying that...

Adler: I mean it.

Eurus: I'll think about it.

Adler putting on her dress: Why do you hate wearing your glasses?

Eurus: Like I said, it makes me look stupid.

Adler: You seem to need it, luckily I saved this *pulls out the pair she lost in the fire*

Eurus: Thank you but, imperfect vision is the least of my worries right now.

Adler: What's wrong?

Eurus: What happens if you make a deal with dangerous people and now you're in a fabricated game? Just for scenario

Adler: All you need to do is survive.

Eurus thinking: Bingo!

Adler: Besides, I think you still look lovely with that pair on. *patting her*

Eurus: *putting it on and looking at the mirror* It's clearer now and I guess you're right... *looking at Sherlock* Oh god, how did I not notice him looking like a pig sty!

Fred: Hey Eurus!

Eurus looking at Fred: You're not supposed to be here but, what's up?

Fred: Is Miss Adler really staying with you?

Eurus: Yes, and I think I finally figured her out! I think, I'll explain my theories later. Anyways, any new cases?

Fred: William is busy on something but I'll call you as soon as we're done.

Eurus: Great! *looking back to see Sherlock

Eurus spinning around: These shoes are so pretty! Thanks ffor helping me pick them out.

Adler: You look like a beautiful princess already!

Sherlock: Stop it, can we go home?

Eurus facing him: No, we promised we accompany her until the end. I'll get some ice cream, I'll be back.

Adler: Shouldn't you accompny your sister?

Sherlock: Look, I know she seems timid but I can say for sure that she can handle herself for a while.

Eurus going back: Hey! I got double scoops. Miss Adler, you look soaked? *feels blade on her neck*

Guy with a knife: Hello there missy, you seem lost!

Sherlock protective senses: *running to her* get your hands off her!

Adler: Mr. Holmes do something!

Sherlock: That wasn't a threat, it was a warning.

Guy with a knife: Wha- Ow! *Eurus breaking his hand* Why you-

Eurus glowing blue eyes:*flips him over and starts fighting with him* since dad's training helped and now *throws him into a river* You're gone. Why are you two staring at me?

Adler going to her: See, you do have potential.

Eurus: What?

Sherlock: You remembered father's training, Princess.

Eurus: Oh shoot, you saw that, I was only protecting myself.

Sherlock: You should see her when she's doing her fencing, Irene.

Eurus: *flustered*

Adler: Amazing! You should tell me more about what you can do.

Eurus thinking: Sherly and Mycky have the same training but why is she congratulating me?

Eurus looking at the window: Okay Sherly, maybe I was jealous. I can say that without getting embarassed because you are naked right now.

Sherlock: I don't know why you're jealous, you're cool on your own.

Eurus: I know but, she has something to impress you with and I... am just your sister.

Sherlock: What do you mean?

Eurus: Everyone refers to me as the Holmes Sister but I don't even know what I want to be, I only joined you because you're my guide.

Sherlock: Then find yourself, that's what I did. I'm always going to be proud of you no matter what, don't forget it. Besides, you're the East Wind, remember that.

Eurus: ...alright! *getting off the carriage.

Adler: Aww, you two reconciled.

Other Info- She's Haitian-American & is fluent in Haitian Creole.

She's nicknamed Ro, Rosie, & Smiley by her family, friends, and people at school. Hudson gave her the nickname "Sunshine."

Roseline took an interest in art when she was three years old- starting with finger painting & coloring all over the walls in permanent marker in her house! Over the years, she's gotten into figure drawing, oil painting, portraits, landscapes- even dabbling a bit in ceramics, pottery, & sculpting. She has competed in a few art competitions in middle and high school & just at the start of senior year, Roseline and a few other students from different high schools was chosen by the Mayor of Miami to paint a mural on the outside wall of a community center in Little Haiti.

She makes her own jewelry & has a quirky sense of style- wearing bright bold colors, mismatched patterns, & different materials! Roseline and Iris went all out for Wacky Tacky Day at school a few weeks ago.

She was voted "Most Unique" & "Best Smile" in the yearbook!

In the fall, Roseline will be attending RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) where she someday hopes to be an accomplished artist. She'll be staying with her older sister & brother-in-law who lives in Rhode Island.

She works part-time at her mother's boutique in Little Haiti (which sells African cloths and other various Haitian products).

Roseline has a pet tarantula- a girl named Missy. She also has a huge collection of romance novels that she loves reading! She's also into witches- especially stories of the Salem Witch Trials!

Her all time favorite movie is Titanic.

She loves listening to kompa & zouk music! Roseline was pleasantly surprised when Hudson danced along with one of her cousins at a bal! She also likes listening to Adele, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, & Billie Eilish.

Roseline has a HUGE fear of heights. She's never rode a plane or been on a roller coaster. Her older brother is gonna drive her to Rhode Island, instead of flying there.

She had her first kiss with a boy named Carl (a son of a family friend when they were nine). Her first real boyfriend was in middle school- a guy named Lucas Kavinsky. Roseline has had a few boyfriends throughout the rest of middle school & high school (her losing her virginity to her boyfriend named Noel Fernandez). Roseline met her current boyfriend Warren Cavanaugh at an indie music festival eight weeks ago. She even led the art directions in one of his band's music videos & has even designed posters of theirs!

Roseline has gotten many gifts from her friends- including an African wooden mask from Hudson, a pair of aquamarine studs from Emilio, a Tiffany charm bracelet from Iris, & a sketchbook from Owen.

Brian was once a healthy child on the day he was born, but when he was about 4 years old, he had developed cancer at a young age, and he was put on chemotherapy for quite sometime, but he is a fighter. So when Playtime Co. came to Brian's parents about his illness, they took him there where he would be treated with the Poppy serum on him, but he is not getting any better. There, Brian began to love Huggy Wuggy when he first saw him, owning a Huggy Wuggy doll and even wearing a Huggy Wuggy t-shirt (Which I attempted to draw Huggy Wuggy's head. It is not that good). While Brian was there, he met and befriended Cassie Hudson, who is very shy and docile, but Brian didn't mind her. Sadly, Brian succumbed to his cancer at the age of 10, and The Doctor decided to use his body to create Huggy Wuggy, his favorite toy, and is used as a statue for the Main Lobby. In June 18th, 1992, Brian wanted to see his parents, so he escaped Playtime Co. late at night, where that night he killed five security workers, and leaving six missing. He does make it to his old home, only to discover that his parents were told last year that the poor boy died in his sleep because of the cancer, and he can't show himself to his parents as a giant monster, so the security team caught him and returned him to Playtime Co. where he will remain as a statue in the Main Lobby, until August 8th, 1995 of the Hour of Joy.

Cassie Hudson - Age: 8 years old (Born 1983)

Cassie is a shy and docile little girl who would later become Kissy Missy, as I tried my best to draw her based on the picture Kissy was holding at the Home Sweet Home orphanage, but her ponytail a little bit longer. During her time at Playcare, Cassie didn't make any friends because of her timid personality, that is until she met Brian Sampson. He is the only person that Cassie feels comfortable around and willingly become friends even. She even had a crush on the boy, but sadly, he passed away because of his cancer, leaving the poor girl heartbroken. Cassie's favorite toy is Kissy Missy, who is the love interest of Huggy Wuggy, and always wishes Kissy would be real and be her friend. She would of known better when The Doctor took her to the labs and turned her into Kissy Missy for reals, and is put into Storage B for 4 years until she is supposed to be transported to Playcare until The Hour of Joy came where she was forced to kill everyone at Playtime Co. and she felt extremely guilty about it, so she decided to never kill anyone ever again.

Ralph Jones - Age: 15 years old (Born 1976)

Ralph is the kid where he becomes Boxy-Boo from Project: Playtime. Ralph came from a poor family, so poor that he and his family were forced to be homeless, and he gets separated from his family, and is placed into Playcare at Playtime Co. Whenever he sees kids being bullied, Ralph always defends them from the bullies. The Doctor took interest in Ralph, so he took Ralph into the labs and turned him into Boxy-Boo, as the first creature of the Bigger Bodies Initiative, and is placed as a guard for anyone who would almost discover the Bigger Bodies Initiative, like Rowan Stoll, and kills them by eating them.

Now that the kids who were turned into the Bigger Bodies Toys that were unnamed at the time, now it's time for the two kids who were named until they were turned into the Bigger Bodies Toys, but barely had some backstory or has a backstory.

Marie Payne - Age: 11 years old (Born 1980)

I'm going to take some inspiration of Marie's backstory from GH's video, I'm not a monster 3. Marie used to live with her mother and her little brother, but her mother prefers to her brother instead of Marie herself, so she was never knew being loved by a mother before. Marie tried to her best to give her mother the love she wants, liking doing her school work, even she gets an A-, it wasn't enough and her mother lashes at Marie a lot, and even taking her new Mommy Long Legs toy from her. Marie snuck into her mother's room to get her Mommy Long Legs toy, but she sees her little brother standing on the dresser and getting her Mommy Long Legs toy for her, but the dresser is not strong enough to hold him, which causes him to fall off of it, and Marie tried to rescue him, but she wasn't fast enough and he landed on the floor, instantly killing him from head trauma. Her mother came into her room, and saw her dead son on the ground, and she accuses Marie for killing him because she was jealous of him, so she sent Marie to Playtime Co. as she never wanted to see this murderer ever again, which broke Marie a lot. Marie is bullied a lot at Playcare by the other kids, which one exception of a boy who is kind to her, but Claire Harper always defends Marie from the bullying, and giving Marie the motherly love that Marie's own mother had never given her. But that mother-daughter relationship between Marie and Claire had to end when Catnap had to use the Red Smoke on Marie, where she experiences nightmares of a colorless monster (I don't know if that colorless monster is the Nightmare Catnap or The Prototype), and she fell ill, which led her to be experiment on by The Doctor and is turned into Mommy Long Legs, where her job is to guide kids in the Game Station, where she will be the mother to all of the children as she was hostile to every adult in Playtime Co.

Theodore Grambell - Age: 7 years old (Born 1983)

We already know about Theo with the ARG of Poppy Playtime where he befriended The Prototype, and tried to escape Playtime Co. with the Prototype, but got electrocuted with the Green Hand Pack and almost died, with the Prototype saving Theo, and being turned into Catnap later on, but I just wanted to show you all a drawing of how I see Theo as before being turned into Catnap based on the photo of him and the drawing of him and the Prototype together.
