PJO TV CRIT RANT COMING !!

If you don’t want to hear or don’t like it just don’t read it. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion

I’ve been on the pjo tv crit tag and I gotta say I agree with most of what’s on there 😭😭

All my praise for the show goes to the actors alone. I’m not stupid I didn’t expect the show to be an exact replica of the books cause that would’ve been boring as well but I feel like say “faithful adaptation” is a bit overzealous.

1. The changes

Some of the changes I love. Like them stopping for candy and Annabeth going in was so cute. Grover using psychological warfare on the God of war ate.

But a lot of the changes were just like ???? What was the point? And all the stuff that they revealed like 4-5 seasons too early. Stuff that was hinted at through the books that built suspense and intrigue just dumped on the table was a bit 😕

I remember finding out about Luke’s mom and why Luke REALLY hated his father. It literally had me gagged it was like finding out something I didn’t even know I was waiting for. The build up to them finding out Kronos involved was always a favorite cause it felt so raw. It was pure fear encapsulated by words, you could feel it, it was palpable and we just didn’t get that in the show. It was so “here you go. Kronos it was him *but said intensely*”

2. Them knowing everything

I do understand how it does make sense that they would know a lot of things from the jump as they all literally grew up with this information but a lot of the times where they didn’t realize exactly what was happening right away in the books have a slight reminder of how young and innocent they are. These neurodivergent 12 year olds who have been tasked with a Gods job and have been trekking across the states for days; yeah I wouldn’t expect them to be at the top of their game ALL THE TIME no matter how smart they are. The slip ups show that even though they’re these tiny warriors they aren’t immune to being a little naive.

3. Setting

I’m not gonna criticize the settings cause if that’s how Rick imagined it then that’s how he imagined it but I can’t blame the ppl who are a bit miffed at how the sets were portrayed. The underworld did truly throw me off.

4. Info dumping ?? Or not enough info idk

I also saw a post about how they would just throw random names out there pertaining to Greek mythology and then just not explain 😭😭 and all the stuff that they left out too (fields of punishment, isle blest, etc) which sets up for things in later seasons. And I understand the time crunch; 8 episodes 40 mins give or take and a dream is what they had. That being said this shit was a mess 🤷🏽‍♀️😭😭 like badly set up, script was not doing them any justice, and it felt so boring most of the time.

5. Whimsy and fun erasure

There were gems I will keep saying that. There were fun times but the fun times also felt very strategically placed whereas in the books it was sorta woven into the chaos. Charon being a lil silly, Grover playing the shooting game in the lotus casino and killing humans (I love him so much 😭😭), annabeth geeking over the architecture of the arch and going on a tangent about how it was made while Grover and Percy trade candy in the back. Talking to the animals and Percy finding out he can speak horse, the car wash where annabeth scares off a grown man in a Lincoln, “shows over! Thank you and goodnight!”, Percy and Grover clowning annabeth for watching the discovery channel unironically. I’m not saying I expected them to put all this shit in there cause again I’m not an imbecile but the type of wit and humor that made everyone fall in love with the books was cut out for the more serious stuff. And what’s so frustrating about that is I KNOW the actors would’ve ate it up. Walker especially that boy IS Percy.

I could keep finding stuff but I’m trying to be grateful cause even after all of this Rick did take the time to try and think of us and maybe it’s not his fault but idk it’s just a bit disappointing after the way it was marketed towards long time fans

i never understood ppl claiming percy has never suffered the consequences of his loyalty. you're talking about percy "i know the prophecy said my friend would betray me but these are my friends they wouldn't betray me" jackson, who walked into a remote part of the forest with luke and almost died in book one. you're talking about percy "kronos told me point-blank there was a traitor but i can't imagine any of these ppl betraying me" jackson, who decided to stop looking for the traitor and moved on. you're talking about percy "nico is acting suspicious and very clearly hiding something from me but he's my friend and i trust him" jackson, who walked into nico's very obvious set up and almost got himself held hostage during the titan war. percy is so loyal that he cannot fathom betrayal until it's happening, and it has nearly killed him multiple times.

Watched first 2 ep of the new PJO show and... i really do not get where the hype is coming from

Like sure, visuals are nice and the actors are doing a great job (love Clarisse's actress so much, she seems to be having a lot of fun). There are some adaptation choices that i don't particularly like (like mostly Grover being just shooed away constantly, erasing adhd and dyslexia besides one breif mention and that letters thing in first ep, getting kicked out of school being part of some grand plan and whatever was Sally's problem), but overall i think it's decent,

But what i cannot get over is just how bad of a tv show it is. Like, it's so confusing

I cannot fathom how they managed to get negative amount of tension and action in fight scenes. And the constant exposition dumping while they just sit/stand there. And talk. And talk. And then talk some more enough that you nearly forget that the time sensitive thing that is happening is supposedly still happening. Like you have them be like "omg we have to get out of there now" and then just have them stand there and talk for at least 3 mins??? Or the absolutely confusing decision to cut the hype of the capture the flag starting cuz very slow and boring walk when Percy says the same thing he already said at least 3 times in this episode alone is more important

And do not get me started on the fades to black. Idk if it's some new trend in tv shows or whatever, they are just confusing and laughable

I hope the rest of the season is gonna get at least slightly better with all of this. I'm really trying to be positive and give it a fair shot

Time-Travel Selfcest AU again

Ajhdsjdhak huge thanks to @silverwashi for giving me so many thoughts. I gotta get them out before I forget everything ajdsakj 😭😭

I like the idea of the time loop so much omg.

Nico, who has been antagonized and thus strayed away from the light and into a much darker past, travels to the past, befriends his younger self while antagonizing everyone else, ends up defeated - but not without planting a seed of darkness inside said younger self, so that the loop would go on and on forever.

Brilliant. I could kill for this.

What I love even more though - is that the reason Nico becomes bad in the first place is people's antagonization towards him.

Talking in an AU here. Let's say he is feared, betrayed, and nearly killed due to said fear. But he isn't killed. He survived, and those fears become real because Nico has had enough of being mistreated for nothing.

When people are scared of you and it makes you become the very thing they're scared of. Peak villainy. Completely pure - because you did nothing but it turns out this way anyway - inevitable, and beautiful. Embrace the villain in you ok that's just my evil self talking

Nico can't fight everyone tho. Even a god can't, and Nico is just so much of a lonely boy. So he ends up defeated, banished, exiled - gone - anyway.

But children of Hades are vengeful things, aren't they? So, let's just say, Nico is banished to the very place of another enemy of the gods - one who had turned his back on his father, on the gods, and become the one thing they fear so much once.

Luke. And Kronos. *SCREAMS* 😭✨🥳🥳🥰🤩😇🥳🥰😭 OMG I LOVE LUKE ajshdjakd

And so he 'returns'.

Nico (now will be referred to as Future Nico) reaches the past. And he sees everything with retribution in his eyes. He remembers what they did to him in his life.

And so he plans to show Past Nico just that.

I have yet to figure out how he does it though - I would have to reread the whole PJO thing for that, and no, I don't have that kind of patience and willpower.

BUT let's just say Future Nico pities his younger self the same way he feels betrayed, abandoned, and lost. The suffering Past Nico is going thru at that time fuels his vengeance. It's love, in a way, and he shows P-Nico just that: love, compassion, reassurance, I'm sorry we have to go through all of that...

And at the same time, he gaslights him into thinking his sacrifice is worthless, that We did all of this, for what?, that We don't deserve to be misery like this. You don't deserve to be miserable like this.

Past Nico would hardly believe him, of course, but a seed of doubt is all Future Nico needs.

When everything's said and done though, Future Nico's ill intentions are all revealed. And Past Nico goes through the whole self-doubt I has mentioned.

My favorite of this part - when people realize Future Nico is an enemy - is this quote I've just come up with like 20 mins prior, of F-Nico to everyone who fights him:

"I'm not future Nico. I'm the Nico that you have forced into being."

He's defeated, of course. But that's okay. He saw it coming, and he has already achieved what he came for - to reach the Past Nico, his younger, still innocent, still defenseless version. And when he dies, he looks at Past Nico with all the pity he can gather for himself.

I just want to note that I'm talking with the love Future Nico has for his younger self in mind. I have... very distorted definition of love when it comes to fiction, but I'm building this on the foundation that Nico loves his younger self - whatever kind of love that is.

Why else would he travel to the past to warn Past Nico about the inevitable betrayal? Only because of a grudge?

No, he loves him - loves himself, and loves every Nico he has once been.

This might be fueled by vengeance, but it's also the mercy Nico has for himself.

The threat isn't gone. And it would never be gone. As @silverwashi has offered.

Because it's now that the gods and the friends realize how powerful Nico is. How dangerous he is. How much of a threat he is when he so much as strays.

I mean, his Older self literally tried to destroy them - of course Nico's a threat.

So they decide to betray him before he can betray them. They see him as an enemy, antagonizing him, and later attempt to eliminate them. The seed sprouts and thrives. The green tree flourishes.

"He was right, this is all my future would always become."

Nico grows into the very thing they try to destroy, to eliminate before it comes. His mature, desperate, revengeful, vicious self.

And the loop repeats.

I just want to say that I love the way there's no actual beginning point of this. It's a loop. It doesn't need a starting point. The Future becomes the Past, and the Past becomes the Future once more. It feels like there's no way out, and they're trapped forever.

Now, let's talk about how we can break the loops.

I think the key would be Hades. The key - not the one who holds the key, mind you.

Because he would be the first to understand Nico's stray. He had been there, and Nico was the one who pulled him out when the kid convinced him to give the Olympians a chance.

And for that, he would be the last to lose his love for Nico. When Percy, Jason, and everyone for that matter, realize Nico's ill intentions and try to defeat him, Hades would be the last - if ever - to point a weapon at Nico's face and further his descent into darkness.

Hades is the Lord of the Underworld, closest to Tartarus, closest to Chaos - to everything I can just grip at for the Time Travel logic of this Greek Myth work. Which means that he would be the first to see through this whole time-loop thing - without actual revelation from Future Nico himself.

So yeah, I think the choice would be in Hades' hand.

If he keeps allowing his son to stray, to dive deeper and deeper until there's no way out, to plant the evil seed and water it with his death - then the time loop repeats itself.

If he chooses to stop it, however, he would stop Nico's death - since his death means only repeating cycles - and puts an end to the grudge he holds.

With that being said, Hades has to make sure the Nico of this loop - Past/Present/whatever - is safe, too.

Hades has to save both versions of the child he loves so much. I honestly have no idea how this would turn out, but I imagine it along the line that in the last loop, Hades finally gets people to stop antagonizing Nico, and Future Nico himself has to tell Present Nico to not hold onto the grudge, and that he mustn't stray as he did.

Because as it turns out, the one who decides is Nico and Nico alone. Hades plays the role of a key, but Nico himself has to get rid of these loops. He himself must be the one to dig the way out. Not only his Present, but his Future/Past must as well.

I suppose there is no... actual happy ending for this AU, ngl. The most preferable ending perhaps would be people realizing their self-destructing countermeasures and just... leaving Nico alone. Then the loop would stop. HOWEVER, I dislike the gods and the cast on principle so I say they never do. So for as long as Nico still exists, the loop goes on.

There might be a true ending tho, wherein maybe Nico has to die forever to prove his loyalty to the paranoid people, or maybe he just... vanishes. disappears from reality and people's memories alike. just dust into the flow of time, with only Hades as a mourner.

Bc obviously, I don't intend this AU to be moral. I just want angst. And selfcest. Who cares at this point bc i certainly don't.

Wow this AU is such a delight. I'm alone and I'm having the time of my life. I'd probably come up with something new once in every while later LOLOL.

thoughts on the PJO finale and the show in general (spoiler warning for episode 8)

Ares fight was pretty good but could’ve been a bit longer IMO. I like how Percy actually talked back to him and the action felt semi-decent for once

the Luke flashbacks are a good addition since there wasn't a lot of time spent showing he and Percy getting close in the beginning

lance reddick best part of this show fr, rip a legend (also Zeus was the first god who Actually felt like one

“Whether we wanted it or not we've stepped into war with the gods on Olympus”

still don’t see the point of them missing the deadline though, especially since the war business was completely lackluster (Poseidon just surrendered and it was over, might as well have kept the original story there)

no giant thrones or gods in their giant forms (the gods in this show are just Some Guys fr and not in the fun way)

no dramatic exit lightning for my boy Zeus (sad about it)

the Percy and Poseidon scene was good and felt very accurate to the book

the pacing is better in this episode overall which kind of sucks seeing as it's the finale :/

I really enjoyed Luke’s betrayal scene, though the stakes definitely weren't as high (I know it's bc of Luke trying to recruit instead of kill, which I like, but it felt more anti-climatic compared to the betrayal buildup)

having Gabe open the box himself really took away from the moment, though I guess it Kind of makes sense since they didn't make him as big of a jerk as he was in the book

general thoughts

they didn't use Annabeth NEARLY enough -> she's supposed to be a bit of a know-it-all but instead they had Percy just know way more than he did in the book (felt a bit OOC)

they didn't let the actors put any personality into their roles (people keep saying the irl trio matches the characters more than when they're acting)

idk why they kept flip-flopping between 30 min and 40 min episodes but that was wack

overall, it was Not the faithful adaptation Rick promised but instead his attempt to rewrite the original series according to his current whims (I'm a writer, I get it, but it's not great for the fans who were banking on a faithful adaptation)

I can't see myself being very interested in the next season unless they make some big changes to their approach

A writing tip I always follow... oof I've gotten so many aha. I think the one I still remind myself to follow is to trust my subconscious and not be so stuck to a story idea that I avoid a better one just because I don't want to change the course from the original idea. It helps with writers block too!

I wish I could say PJO or even Magic Treehouse, but tbh the first time I found out a fanfiction could be "professionally published" was with 50 shades of grey u.u

I think the last thing I googled was the definition of a word but... I can't recall the word lmfao

The last thing I googled while writing.... I think was pilot flight schedules for Rody!

I don't balance. I can't. I freeball. Sometimes I don't write for weeks, sometimes I'm writing during my 15 min breaks at work and while waiting in the car at my siblings' bus stops. Sometimes I'm staying up till 3am on a work night because I just HAVE to finish a scene/fic, sometimes I go to bed early and wake up super early because the next plot point came to me mid-dream lmfao

bahahah uhhhhh because of online shippers i think. Like, that's why I started jjk and then I ended up... not shipping the couple I went into it for? lmfao Idk if that really counts as weird though. I'm not sure what my weirdest is....

I act out the emotional scenes! I get into their heads and think like them and imagine the conversations and what would make them yell and cry and what could be said to them to further the emotion or stifle it etc. and I've noticed while writing that I'll make the facial expressions lmfao

I do!! sometimes it's unintentional, but sometimes it's very much planned out from the start. Like in These Violent Delights, I had Dabi and Hawks go through the stages of grief in opposition to each other. So Dabi started out with the normal procession of the phases (Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance) while Hawks experienced them in reverse (Acceptance, Depression, Bargaining, Anger, Denial), which is why the third chapter is longest with both POVs, because they're the most in tandem at that point. They're both in bargaining, they're both kind of in the same vulnerable but wary state. That I planned from the very beginning and I wrote it all out in bullet points. It's probably the most organized fic, and even then, I had to re-vamp the whole last two chapters lmfao

I think I do very much imagine it as a movie which helps with blocking and tone and then the "script" of course. If it's a very emotional scene, it's easier to let the words flow.

Hmmmmmm. It depends on the villain I think. I like the idea of ruthless villains, but I do always like having a backstory. Not necessarily to excuse why they're villains, but just to have a grasp on their character as a whole, how they make decision, if they're more about intellectual manipulation like Ozai or more about power dynamics like Shig in the Enchanted AU or if it's more a general concept like invasion of privacy in the rodydeku one shot. Depending on the type of villain I'm going for, I focus on different aspects, but I like having a base backstory for them.

"said" is just something people shouldn't be afraid of. It's distracting if you use a bunch of different speech tags, and it's distracting if you use "said" 10 times in a row. Sometimes a person does just say something, sometimes you don't need to specify who said because it's obvious, sometimes an adverb to go with "said" makes all the difference.

Right now, the WIP i'm on is part 2 of the rodydeku one where they meet again after a long time so the moodboard I think would have time stamps and edgy sad tumblr posts and hands reaching for each other just shy of touching and something you can't really tell if it's a sunrise or a sunset. One of my best friends makes moodboards, maybe I'll ask her for one klasdjakldf

Ohhhhhh shit ahahaha I genuinely don't know.... I'm so particular about how I want things done for a story that's mine that idk if I could relinquish my idea to an author I like kadsjfa

Hm. I usually like sarcastic characters! It definitely depends on if they're being cynical and sarcastic or just have a penchant for sarcastic humor though. I don't really like smart-alack cynical sarcasm.

I think I do notice my own voice, especially with turns of phrases, but a lot of people tell me I'm good at differentiating the voices of different characters who narrate, so maybe it's not as glaringly obvious as I think?

I'd like to think my sentence structure has gotten more polished, albeit a bit more verbose.... I know my strength is in emotions, so I've leaned into those descriptions a lot more. I have noticed I have a tendency of using runons or just very long sentences that are grammatically correct, they just have a bunch of commas. I didn't do that as much before, but I'm working on breaking it up lmfao. I do read older things and cringe, so at least I'm certain I've improved over the last decade

I actually dont!!!! Like, I talk to my friends all the time, but when I read their stuff, it's very different from their voices, so I can't say I can tell just by how they speak. Same in my writing classes before, their writing styles were very different from the way they talked in class.

I have a tendency... to overlook descriptions at first in fanfiction lmfao. I think that's because I used to be very annoyed seeing the same description word for word in the first page of every fanfiction. So now I sort of describe the person slowly, moreso in moments when one of them is describing or admiring something about the other. Like, I mention about halfway through the fic that Deku has a mohawk, because Deku isn't really gonna be prone to describing himself, but he's fawning over grey eyes which he describes in a variety of ways, as well as the auburn hair and smug smile as he falls more and more for Rody. I think the same goes for Teaching a heart, Sokka and Zuko describe each other in different ways than they'd describe themselves and notice different aspects about each other. Probably something to work on though, since not everything is a fanfic and I don't want the character to be a blob aksjdfka
