According to NBC here in the US, the missing titanic sub has been found. As debris. Off the bow of the Titanic wreckage.
And it looks like the sub suffered what we all suspected, and what was undoubtedly the more merciful of the two options: a catastrophic implosion from the pressure.
Also, more info has come to light about the fishing trawler with the hundreds of migrants that sank cataclysmically off the coast of Greece, indicating that the greek coast guard knew about the vessel AND how much trouble the vessel was in, and were towing it at a speed that made it capsize, at which point they unhooked the tow line and watched the trawler sink without helping the passengers to safety. Despite a bunch of other ships trying to help as well throughout the whole ordeal.
So a lot of people are dead, all because of regulations (and the lack thereof) regarding sea-faring vessels and rescue protocols. People shouldnt be allowed to make a business charging a ton of money for a ride on an uncertified, unsafe, un-seaworthy ship going deep into the ocean with no distress beacon or tether to the mothership. People also shouldnt be allowed to enact laws that criminalize the ferrying of refugees, which then force the refugees to hitch rides on fishing trawlers, and which also prevent people from helping those fishing trawlers full of refugees due to fear of legal consequences.
Hopefully BOTH of these events spark changes on an international scale in terms of what is legally allowed to be sailed, who is legally allowed to be the passengers, and what the rescue protocols are in the event of disaster for any seafaring vessel, illegal or not. It shouldnt be just the global 1% who get 24/7 search parties and remote-operated submersibles helping rescue them.

“the submarine trip was stupid and rooted in classism”, “it’s absolutely hideous how much more manpower was put into saving and reporting on them vs the 500 migrants who died in a similar horrible fashion”, and “despite their actions, no human being (especially not a nineteen year old) should deserve to die like this, especially when their death will not actually herald any positive change/abolishment of the billionaire class” are three thoughts than can and should coexist. you don’t have to mourn their deaths, but you don’t need to celebrate them, either.

The fact that y’all think migrants drowning in the Mediterranean is NEW NEWS…this happens so painfully often. You do not get to tell us how upset we should be. We KNOW.

The thing that keeps coming back to me about this whole submersible shit is that the Titanic is a lower class immigrant gravesite. Out of 1514 who died 123 of them were first class. The rest were immigrants and lower class people who got purposefully locked under the deck or were denied onto the lifeboats. The titanic was a classist tragedy made worse by the fact that no one seems to treat it like that. And now 500+ immigrants are missing or dead. And no one seems to be talking about that because little boy billionaires are dying at the bottom of the ocean bc they wanted to see the world's most inaccessible paupers grave.

Syed Hussan, the executive director of the Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, made the comments to CBC News this week after Mexico's consulate in Toronto said more than 60 Mexicans were picked up in two police raids in Ontario last month.
It's not clear where they are now or how they're doing because the consulate won't provide any more details about the raids or the status of the alleged victims. But Hussan says from past experience, having their employers or homes raided doesn't always benefit migrant workers.
"They lose their income, they lose their belongings, they are not able to recoup any other wages. They're often deported. In some cases, they're imprisoned," Hussan said in an interview.
Even if there are abuses regarding the workers' jobs, pay or living arrangements, Hussan says negotiating with employers, civil court action or complaints to the Ontario Ministry of Labour can bring about better solutions.
"The police don't have the ability to take the money from the employer and give it you," he said.
Ultimately, according to Hussan, workers are best served by changes to labour and immigration laws that will give them more rights and more routes to legal immigration status.
"The language that we use, that the sex worker movement also uses, is, 'We want rights, not rescue,'" he added.

Not to be that person but everyone I've seen saying 'we shouldn't be making jokes about the billionaires on the submarines. They are real human lives at stake' are real fucking quiet when migrants desperately fleeing their home countries for better lives lose their lives on boats. Where is the compassion there? They are real human lives too.

Rescued African migrants say they are fleeing slavery
Italy has threatened to stop foreign boats carrying migrants rescued in the central Mediterranean Sea from docking in its ports unless other EU countries do more to help. It comes amid a surge in arrivals in recent days, as we reported last night from aboard a German rescue vessel. Tonight we hear from the migrants and refugees themselves. A warning: this report contains images and testimony that you may find distressing.

In case anyone actually cares about this issue, some good news: 227 migrants were rescued off the Canary Islands and 294 migrants were rescued off the coast of Italy yesterday/today.
It was in the news.
Haven't seen anyone talking about it on here for some reason so I thought I'd share!

Migrants Tragedy in the Mediterranean: 600 Deaths That Were Preventable
Last month’s tragedy of the Adriana that capsized and sank off the coast of Greece, leading to the shocking death of 600 passengers, in large part women and children, finally has an explanation. It can no longer be shelved in the convenient category (convenient for European political leaders) where the only culprits are the crazed smugglers who jam migrants in floating wrecks in order to maximize…

France-based NGO ship rescues 440 irregular migrants in Mediterranean The Geo Barents ship belonging to the France-based non-governmental organization (NGO) Doctors Without Borders (MSF) rescued 440 irregular migrants in distress in the international waters of the Mediterranean off the coast of Malta. In the post made on MSF's Twitter accounts, it was stated that as a result of the call made yesterday by the civil organization called "Alarm Phone", which announced the calls for help from migrants in the Mediterranean, on social media, Geo Barents, who went to the north to avoid the stormy weather, was able to reach the area where the migrant boat is located after a 10-hour journey. It was stated that the Geo Barents crew could not carry out the rescue operation at the first stage due to adverse conditions and only distributed life jackets to the immigrants, and then they rescued a total of 440 people, including 30
