i said this in a text post but a poll makes more sense to me, plus it's anonymous which might help, so

im thinking of opening writing and/or editing commissions bc,,,,, food expensive. ive done a little bit of research to see how other ppl price theirs, but i dont entirely know yet. im feeling out if theyd be feasible before i do too much research

the amount im thinking of loosely is smth like... 5 cents a word for writing? this would total to $25 for 500 words and $50 for 1k words, for the record. might do a little cheaper (maybe like 3 cents a word), but i havent yet decided

im not sure for editing, but id probs do some kinda pay-by-page model? smth like $3-5 by page is my loose idea, maybe cheaper for longer, but i havent yet looked into pricing these at all. would be editing for grammar/spelling but also reading for patterns in writing / patterns of mistakes and walking thru how to handle them

How I'd go about reintroducing Mephiles back into Sonic lore(sorta)

So this isn't going to be super structured, its gonna be really rambly but its basically cuz i'm repeating the whole thought process I had while looking stuff up, brainstorming etc so sorry if it gets a bit long, so I'll put design stuff and the whole thing under a keep reading link. Got it? Good. Lets uh, do this.

So to go back to the very beginning, the sonic channel poll. That was a wild time haha. When i first saw it I wasn't initially interested in Mephiles. I would've voted for Vector or Sonicman tbh. But seeing people talking about how cool it would be to reintroduce a character that got wiped out of existence made it a bit more entertaining to me. Which made it suck a little more that he didnt win. But hey, im not complaining about Sonicman, good for him. But that got me thinking about how difficult it would be to reintroduce Mephiles. After all, he came from a very infamous game that still leaves scars in Sonic's history, and having him just come back when his whole story revolved around a game that ppl do not want back is tricky. At least with Silver they rewrote his future a bit, and Blaze already had lore. Elise might still exist but they can mention Soleanna without having to explore too much of its past game story. Mephiles was pivotal to a plot that Sega does not want to bring back. So, i don't think they'd want to bring him back in his initial form. I also think they're trying to stray from the god stuff Sonic 06 brought into the series(besides the End).

But then I thought about IDW's canon. Where its almost sorta filler, it'll acknowledge the games but the game will only reference its characters and story in passing(so far). IDW would probably be the best place to put Mephiles so that he gets an arc without it affecting the mainline games, but still exist. Still I think we need to go further in. Solaris was not only killed in the future, but erased from existence in the beginning. Existence was rewritten to what it is now, how to you bring back a character that was not only killed, but erased? Well for the killed part, what about reincarnation? Weakened to a mortal form with lesser powers(still reminiscent of the past, but not to the time manipulation powers it once was. Essentially, mostly just the shadow powers with some new perks, but no time travel or time god powers). There can be many ways to introduce a reincarnated character, but I have an idea in mind ill elaborate on later. Next, for the erased part. Well, my idea was, why not use Null Space? Maybe what Eggman assumed was a realm created by the Phantom Ruby was actually a pocket dimension where things that didnt make sense in the new reality were put into. It has so little lore and its not very explored, rewriting it a tad wouldn't be a big deal. There was things in Null Space, despite it being described as a place of nothingness. Everything that was from the 06 reality that couldnt fit neatly into the new one was put into this pocket dimension that's essentially the void. Thats where "Mephiles" has been this entire time.

Back to the reincarnation bit, having a character like this means that while this character is in fact Mephiles, it also sorta isn't. I think this grey line where it brings back Mephiles but can be its own character in time would help ppl feel more confident in bringing him back. He wont be 100% the same, but he still has those qualities that made him seem so cool in the first place. Cold, manipulative, and destructive. Trying to always be one step ahead of others.

My idea of bringing Mephiles back would be in the form of a child. Why? Well when I think of being reverted to a weakened state, i sometimes default to children. Children also represent untapped potential, the ability to grow and change, and be easily influenced by their environment. For a character that beckons to the past but also has the ability to grow beyond it, being a child makes sense to me thematically. Also the idea of the edgy, cold merciless personality being in the body of a child is endearing to me. I actually designed a hedgehog form for this character that's supposed to harken back to Mephiles' initial form, but look like his own person. Its not what I think is the ideal form for the character, but hey i tried. My tablet broke tho so its only a doodle.

I like the straightjacket look of it, and it's loosely based on the scepter of darkness because this body is a mortal cage for Mephiles' soul. Its supposed to look like a creepy edgy kid, Mephiles himself is kinda offputting in that way anyways. Might simplify the little thorn spikes from the shoes or waist, or remove em entirely. The coat is also supposed to cover his body markings, in case one would want to keep his identity a bit of a surprise, initially. The claws are summoned, not inherently a part of his body. Looks like Mephiles' hands, just bigger. Also partially inspired by Sig from Puyo Puyo.

Since this is Mephiles-but-sorta-not, he needed a new name. I wanted to keep it close to the original Mephiles while still having its own identity, so I did research. And uh, it was probably very obvious for most but he's supposed to symbolize both God and the devil? So Mephiles is short for Mephistopheles from Faust, which also became another name for Satan. Iblis was a demon in the Islamic tradition that is also another name for Satan somewhat. And Solaris, which is a name that harkens to the sun(being a sun and time god), also harkens to Satan's original name Lucificer(meaning light-bringer/bearer, keep that in mind). Plus with the 6's of different features in the first phase and then turning into an angel of light in the final, its kinda obvious who Mephiles is supposed to represent. Well, besides also being a fusion of the concept of God, for relating to light and time. On a side note, looking into a game ive played but had no interest in, Sonic 06 really was supposed to be such an ambitious game. It had all these plot intricacies, metaphors, and the weight of fighting a god was supposed to be really heavy. It was supposed to be the biggest fight in Sonic history. The biggest bad who ever bad-ded. It was meant to be so important. It was probably obvious to most, but it was only by looking into it that I got an appreciation for 06. Its just a shame that it ended up how it did. But anyways, back to names. So I wanted to follow the same theme as Mephiles, Iblis, and Solaris, being that they are all names for the Devil. Lucifer was considered the original name for the Devil, but I dont want to be that obvious. Well, i looked into the name, and Lucifer actually had greek origins with i believe the God of Venus. Well, another name for the god of Venus was Phosphorus(which guess what, also means light-bringer!). So i shortened it, and behold, the new name is Phos. So we have a design and a name! Whats the story?

Well, I don't have everything planned out, but I did have a few bullet points I'll post here:

Reincarnation of Mephiles, stripped of divine power but has his shadow manipulation still

Lives in the Null Void from Forces(the Null Void is actually a pocket of space created when the original reality deleted itself.)

When Sonic enters and escapes Null Void, Phos leaves as well.

Has no memories, bumps into sonic and co

Wants to learn who he is, gets attached to sonic due to familiarity

Hates shadow, like original counterpart

Shadow does not trust him at all, and Sonic is suspicious but hey, they dont know who Mephiles is anyways. The kid looks sketchy but hes also abandoned and amnesiac, it would feel pretty bad to beat up a child. Maybe not for Shadow lol.

Has extreme empathy, but no sympathy: Is able to read people to an inhuman degree and reflect their emotions like a mirror due to lacking individuality(initially)

Starts off as cold and emotionless, incredibly manipulative due to the ability to detect the feelings of his target.

Ends up living with Vanilla and Cream as compromise(its really funny that Cream befriends a demon baby)

He does good things and makes friends not cuz he wants to, but because he figures making allies and doing what he can so they dont kick him out will help out more in the long run. When he messes up and his morality is questioned, hes able to barely stay by putting things in his favor and talking it out.

Maybe initially tries to manipulate Sonic, but later learns of the strength of his character.

Gradually not only understands the emotions of others, but begins to absorb them as well, gaining his own feelings based on the ideals of the people in his life, primarily Sonic, Shadow, and Silver(the three who killed him in the first place)

Eventually learns about the truth, plots to regain his other half and reach his deity status somehow

Maybe ties into targeting Blaze for her fire powers? Could be related to what happened to Iblis after the reset.

When he realizes he wants to be his own person and choose his life, its too late and he's becoming Mephiles.

Sonic and co go to save him, fight ensues, Phos helps from inside his own shattered mind, and is eventually able to revert back to normal, keeping his weakened powers but is not inherently evil or empty anymore. Still kinda cold and crafty but he's doing it for good(or what he believes in good, kinda stubborn like Shadow).

Joins the cast as a regular character.

So for his powers, I kinda simplified them into a few things:

Shadow manipulation powers. Absorbs shadows, can merge into shadows to hide or teleport between them. Maybe the shadow balls come back, not sure. Can make shadow-y clones too.

Crystalline powers. Harkens back to his past body. Is able to make claws out of a crystal like substance and slash at things. Maybe can shoot them like projectiles too.

Idk if he'd keep his ability to morph into other peoples appearances though. IDW already has that one guy and its not like Mephiles made exact copies. Plus he already has his own body. Considering that Phos is meant to be somewhat empty inside and reflects the emotions of his peers, it could be fitting. Maybe when he becomes more introspective he shifts into the appearances of other characters when he thinks about them. idk.

But uh yea that was everything i had written down(i made notes based on the late night brainworms I was getting that lasted a couple of hours. This was the fruit of that labor haha.) I'm not saying this is the perfect way of bringing him back, its possible people will be upset with this version or not prefer it, but hey i like it so its gotta mean something. Technically by writing this down it kinda guarantees SEGA would not use it anyways, so its not important anyways. I might keep this as my own oc and doodle more concepts of this schemer demon baby in the future though, I think it's really neat. The idea of having a powerful small child with emotionless whims that you pray stays on your side is very cool to me, and this whole thing was fun practice anyways. I hope you guys have a good one, if you have any critiques or ideas you'd like to share id love to hear it. Just uh, be nice to me please lol. I'm trying my best. But yea that's it, thanks for entering my brainstorming personal hell.

I am also blown away by people Just Saying Things. I could never. But I've followed you for years and I have no plans to stop. We don't have much overlap in interests right now but I still like seeing you on my dash, and I look forward to the chance we'll maybe have a shared Thing in the future.

(I completely understand the reluctance to update, the only things always up-to-date on my phone are my games and only because it wouldn't let me play them otherwise. Though imo it would be better to do it soon-ish and maybe keep a relatively functional form of tumblr for a while longer, rather than the "forced to update at gunpoint" moment coming after they've made some of the lovely (sarcasm) changes they seem to be planning. Also polls really are fun. I wanna make one but I haven't been able to think of a good one yet and I have like no followers so it wouldn't get votes, lol)

Back in the distant past when I did try saying things I was always devastated if no one interacted and bewildered and overwhelmed if someone did, so I think I stopped maybe bc of how much I put myself out there only for nothing to come of it a majority of the time. But like I’m much older now and on meds actually and tumblr is different than in my sordid ancient past so I might be able to just yell into the void and say fuck it and only obsess about it a little. Still unsure.

Also just the thought of, does anyone read my tag rants on reblogs? Bc like I have a feeling that’s what my fucking posts would be like and idk if ppl even get through all that nonsense. Except, like, curated, and hopefully funnier. Also my posts would have fucking spellcheck so my too fast brain-to-type wouldn’t be so overwhelmingly fast that I don’t stop to check until it’s too late and the tag is just useless with half the words typos or spelled wrong, making me look a fool.

I’m so scared of updating tumblr like I don’t want to relearn what tumblr is after so long living this way, but also I have zero clue what my posts or blog actually look like anymore, the one it shows me I know is a lie, an echo of the past trapped in real time. I have noticed things like the ability to pin posts and turn off reblogs and like bitch I’m jealous I can’t do that you got me there.

Maybe I’ll actually finish my updated icon and that will usher in the new tumblr era of Caff Makes an Attempt.

I realized that among casual readers, Deku is clearly the most popular character (by a surprising large margin, Japanese and American polls are rigged you can vote as many times as u want, so it’s become who has the most dedicated fans, which profit Katsuki (who is nonetheless still very popular) but just look at the French popularity poll, who was more restricted). I agree with basically everything u said about deku though, which makes it sadder. So called analysts or fans will go leaps and bounds to discredit Deku and praise other characters to the point of obsessing with them and forgetting the whole picture, while casual readers don’t warp their minds to minimize Deku’s interesting traits and just... enjoy the character, even if they don’t see yet the full potential and complexity (at least the majority, no character is 100% loved). Worst, I’ve seen fans/shippers people HOPING deku doesn’t wake up in the next chapters and we don’t focus on him bc they wanted more interaction between other characters... yet, one week ago they complained about how deku should get more development... THE NERVE

here we stan the french popularity poll... they have TASTE

but yeah.. deku’s actions always get discredited, he always gets blamed for other people hurting, people rally against him whenever he's in focus, and no other character really gets the same treatment. they mischaracterize and misread his character and his role and what he’s trying to do, putting words into his mouth...

like u might not like deku but just admit its because of him that so many other characters are as lovable as they are. mha would not be the same without him.

i hope we get an arc of him. weed out the ppl who dont like him and maybe they’ll stop reading or smth

ok i know i said dissertation but it’s basically like akaashi’s list of bokuto’s weaknesses except it’s nanami’s good points and it’s just 73 pages of his face bc it’s Nanami Kento, everything is his good point. his only flaw is that ppl have bad taste and put gojo over him in popularity polls 😔

YES I HAVE, SADLY. my parents have tried all sorts of ways but it just does not agree with my taste buds and stomach, no matter how it’s cooked or what spices are used 😭 i think part of it is the texture too? i like crunchy fruits but not vegetables lmao. so like i do enjoy spinach, mushrooms, and eggplant. (apparently potatoes are considered veggies too??? but who doesn’t like potatoes) with that said, i still don’t like some other softer veggies (or crunchier ones cooked to be soft) like tomatoes and peppers, though i can eat them if they’re in sauce form 🙈

ty nanami, once again reminding us all why he’s the best date ever 🥺 and pls, ugly food won’t deter me, i’m no foodie like nanamin but taste is def much more important than how it looks!

The "waifu bait" criticism of Edelgard is so dumb given that most of the cast is technically waifu/husbando bait in one way or another, they're all meant to appeal to players as romance options, and she's the only one getting flack for it. (Well, not the only one, there were some people giving Dimitri shit too for being "wish fullfillment for stupid teenage girls who think they can fix a man," but I see the complaint most often with Edelgard.)

Yeah. I mean, you can boink Rhea and Jeritza!

It’s not like satelite love interests aren’t a plague onto anime and fiction in general, but I only ever hear this “you only like them because they’re waifu/bishie” thing directed at characters who very much DO have personality, unique compelling features and plot relevance.

I’ve also seen this thrown at, say, Evangelion’s Miss Ayanami, as if all the fascinating sci-fi concept stuff and compelling narrative about finding your own worth and making a connection in a cruel lonely world wasn’t there - and at least we do see her through a “main character’s love interest” sorta lens. (I was thinking about how Byleth is actually quite similar, except more proactive with more of a dorky side, and less philosophical/reflective, but because Byleth is the MC we come off with a fairly different impression. )

Meanwhile with Edelgard they really didn’t pull any punches, the whole story is set in motion and dominated by her active choices, most the unique designs/outfits she gets are geared to look elegant/powerful. (Apart from the usual ‘individually wrapped boob armor would break your sternum’ thing but you’d really have to know physics for that/ could be fixed easily by making the fit more sweater-like), she has a specific discernable philosophy and makes impactful choices, that can genuinely be agreed or disagreed with.

You can’t swag her into your way of thinking - you can only ally with her under the presupposition that you already actively agree. (See all the people complaining that you cant “criticise her more”, expecting her to be like Dimitri basically even though they are exact opposites. You can only get on her route by making two deliberate choices. I mean they wrote this with your first playthrough in mind, in-universe you’re not there because you wanna complete all aroutes but because you actively chose to join her after she spent a year unsubtly trying to recruit you to her cause)

You don’t talk Claude out of his tactics either. (and forcing it all into this comparision often leads ppl to overlook that he has ambiguities or character development at all, maybe he isn’t vilified but he gets simplified and therefore wronged just as much in the end. They’re not all Dimitri. The whole point of having three or four different potential deuteragonists to choose from is that they’re different)… heck, even if you look at Dimitri, you only get him back to what he really wanted to do back in part I before his black-and-white thinking and exaggerated sense of duty got the better of him.

With all three, joining them eventually just enables them to get closer to their actual vision. Back when you meet her in Remire, Edelgard outright tells you that “with your power on my side, we could courttail the slitherer’s atrocities much more efficiently”. You don’t change her mind at all; You enable her to use “Plan A”. Same with Claude, who otherwise plains much more defensively both because he has less support and because he’s more jaded. And Dimitri essentially pulls a Sayaka, ie being unable to live up to his own unrealistic standards drive him to lose all hope and become the very opposite of the hero he wanted to be, but you do help him get back to that, or to a more balanced mature understanding of that.

The best proof of that is that the popularity poll numbers actually went down after the release, ie a lot of ppl who liked her just bc they liked her design were turned off that there’s a specific personality there that isn’t necessarily their type/ a MO they don’t necessarily agree with. Or all those peeps complaining that the S-support was too understated for them. Claude got that too - They’re just not the most open/expressive people in the world, one would think that after playing through their routes you would know and understand that. Whereas Dimitri has been super emotional from day one (which is both his greatest strength and greatest weakness), so it figures that he’d be more conventionally romantic.

- Hardly things that would happen if she were written to be “blandly pleasant”. I mean generally speaking she’s not the best as showing her feelings and when she does she’s often pretty blunt at it even with her closest friends (El: ”Hubert! I order you to tell me what it is you’re not telling me!” Hubert: [elegantly weasels out of answering] El: [after he’s left the room] I’m worried about him tho. )

Seems senseless to claim that she’s blandly pleasant when she’s absolutely gotten a love-it-or-hate-it-marmite-reaction all across the board. It also seems to go along with the implicit idea that everyone who likes her is heterosexual boys. I’m neither, and it’s not like heterosexual boys aren’t ever interested in “plot” or “writing” I mean geez. Though I would resist the temptation to fully ascribe it to things like that.

To an extent it’s simply confusion. “How can they like this thing that obviously sucks? Must be an ulterior motive”, whereas in reality ppl who like her have probably parsed what happened here differently to begin with (It depends greatly on how powerful you concluded Rhea was, ie, wether what Edelgard is doing is a conquest or a revolt. She certainly sees it as a revolt. Even today in the modern day most of us see revolts as legitimate, or at least, if they get overly destructive, as a fault of the bad government. Heck, there are many on this very site who would label all revolts legit by default (”eat the rich”, the more ‘original sin-like’ variants of privilege theory) which is further than I would go )

There certainly are a bunch of ‘cute’ scenes post holy-tomb scene and under the assumption that Edelgard is this my-way-or-the-highway type of person that many have her pegged as I can see how they might think that it “makes no sense” but that’s really down to wanting her not tp step outside of that idea they have of her. I mean even supervillains have silly everyday situations. Bin Laden loved Disney Movies, Hitler loved his dogs. By itself that has nothing to do with morality or likeability. It’s just being human. Supervillains blush, not because they’re not villains, but because they have blood vessels in their faces. It’s only logical that once you get close to someone and get them to trust you, you get to see more of their silly or vulnerable sides. It’s the same with Rhea. (except that the same people argue that having personable vulnerable sides at all makes Rhea good s of course it causes some cognitive dissonance when Edelgard also has them. I’ve yet to see ppl calling “waifuism” on Rhea (whom I would consider a full-fledged villain), and they shouldn’t - it’s characterization.) Same with ppl calling Edelgard a “manchild” for liking stuffed animals and sweets. She’s actually very mature and adult for her age, having some interests that aren’t super high-minded is just realistic and if you looked at her as a full 3D person who can have more than one trait you’d see that.

This also goes with that tendency of holding up AM as the gold standard complaining about the lack of AM-like plot that they completely miss the different but equally compelling character arcs in VW and CF. That’s not a lack of arc, that IS the arc, it’s just a different arc: We get to see this tough, in-control high-minded character who’d completely given up on the normal life she wanted so much and resigned herself to never being understood finding out that she is very much still capable of normalcy and humanity and finding friendship and love and I think that’s beautiful. It’s my jam.

And it’s meaningful precisely because it’s a change from only seeing the tough leader guise otherwise. Complaining about that is like complaining about getting to see Claude’s more wistful, dreamy, benevolent, not-entirely self-interest side in VW or claiming that the writing would be better if he were just a straight-up selfish trickster. Actually, if you removed their heroic traits you’d end up with a lot more generic characters. You’d simply get every wild card trickster ever, and every “Nietzschean” villain ever. It’s the fact that they’re unconventional heroes that makes Claude and Edelgard so unique, compelling and interesting. If you like conventional heroes, Dimitri is right here. Your basic heroic fantasy ‘rightful king returns/ soft peace loving hero’, plus your basic jrpg guilt-ridden angsty protagonist. I mean there’s good reason that these character archetypes are popular. Plus he’s especially well-executed and recontextualized by the contrast to the others, but there he is, enjoy him! We’re not stopping you.

It’s really Seteth who came up short arc wise. You could have given him an arc, the potential was there, he essentially transistions from protecting himself and his family to taking on his family’s heroic quest and rising up to that, but he doesn’t get like, a scene reflecting on that. Or you could’ve sent them on some mission to actually curb some corrupt cardinals etc, shown them actually reforming the church and realizing that it wasn’t all perfect, after all he very much knows that Rhea herself wasn’t all perfect.

For all that much of media is obsessed with making characters “hot”, the truth is that if people like them for any reason, they will find them hot anyways, regardless of whether that was the intention. (unless the people in question are aroace, or the character is a literal, realistic prepubescent child)

You don’t have to “make” a character hot for ppl to find them so.

you seem really knowledgeable about race-related issues w/ the rpc so i thought i'd ask: is it just me, or does the rpc seem to have a problem w/ actually acknowledging and using japanese fcs?

ty ! but when it comes to race issues, i genuinely have a lot to learn.

to answer your question—— i do believe the rpc has a problem acknowledging and using japanese fcs. but– in the same way the rpc has a problem engaging with most types of poc. however, if you (or anyone else) feels differently, please enlighten me. i would love to know.

in the meanwhile, i did some… statistics and analysis for you below the cut. thank you to the 21 roleplays from which I used their taken character information.

A STUDY IN THE USAGE OF JAPANESE FCS (a la the RPC 2019)

for a fuller and better understanding of your question, i decided to do a little research. i wanted to see which japanese fcs were being used, how often japanese fcs were being used, compare this to real-life numbers and more.

STEP 1. GATHERING DATA

trawling the tags, i came up with a list of rps. from there, i excluded any rp with under 20 muses— though i do note that none of the rps under 20 muses had more than one japanese fc. and then, i noted every single time i saw a japanese fc being used and the frequency of japanese fcs in the rp. i also went ahead and identified what country’s entertainment industry they were in (western/american, japanese, korean) and if they were of mixed descent.

STEP 2. RESULTS

Based on these 21 RPs, the AVERAGE % of Japanese FCs is 1.53%.

OF NOTE, if there is any japanese fcs in an rp, the average is boosted to around 2.59%. With the exception of 2 RPs, every single RP that had any japanese fcs in it was within .2% of this score… aka, while there are some failures in our sampling (non-random), all of the members of our sample were fairly similar in terms of % of japanese fcs.

The most popular fcs to see were RYAN POTTER (½ japanese and a western fc), NANA KOMATSU (full japanese, in the japanese industry ), & KAYLEE BRYANT (¼ japanese and a western fc).

nearly all the fcs with multiple occurrences were mixed fcs from western entertainment. in addition, nearly all the fcs from western entertainment were mixed while the ones from eastern industries were full-blooded.

STEP 3. INTERPRETATION.

according to worldometers, the actual percentage of japanese people in the world is equivalent to 1.64%. the census shows that the percentage of japanese people in the us is 0.4%

so yeah. based on my crappy data, we’re doing okay.

and tbh. im actually. really shocked and impressed by that.

on one hand, it makes sense. while i would love to see more japanese fcs used (catch me… making gif icons of chiharu okunugi and saila kunikida in my free time all day), i’ve never noticed anything egregious abt japanese fcs in particular and this does back up the argument.

but… on the other, you’re right. i feel you 100% on the fact that we have a problem. as someone who is asian and in the rpc, i feel like it is important to emphasize that we need to and we CAN DO so much better. my data, as presented thus far, is skewed heavily in favor of “everyone’s doing the right thing! and everyone’s writing these people as japanese!”– when really that’s not the case at all.

for one, just because the percentages show that japanese fcs are being played, this does not guarantee good portrayal.

secondly, changing the definition of japanese… will change the results extensively. for example, this dataset includes people who are less than ½ japanese (booboo and fivel stewart (japanese, chinese, korean, ½ white + claims of blackfoot), ming lee simmons and kaylee bryant (¼ japanese) ) while they are still japanese, they ARE also mixed. and it’s hard. to make that decision. whether they should count as japanese portrayal and representation.

i’ve also noticed that not all these characters are even played as japanese. in particular, kaylee bryant’s japanese heritage is sometimes ignored and she will be used to play played a white character, while booboo stewart is usually either native or just… ambiguously asian. neither of these things are good.

and thus… if i stop giving people the benefit of the doubt and actually look for japanese portrayal instead of just … any japanese fc, this will put us BELOW average.

WHY WE MIGHT FEEL THAT PEOPLE ARE NOT USING OR ACKNOWLEDGING JAPANESE FCS (also WHY WE R VALID TO)

mixed fcs have privilege. and while we can love and support them and validate their identity, it is sometimes hard to see ourselves in them or to immediately identify them and acknowledge them as representation. sure, ryan potter is great. but even he’s spoken at length about how being hapa/hafu benefits him.

other races (cough… just white people and maybe kpop fcs) seem to have a lot more variety in terms of fc choices. there’s a hundred different white fcs in use. in contrast, when there is japanese representation, it is usually the same people. if you go to ten rps and they each have one japanese fc, that’s dope. but if each of those ten rps just use nana komatsu… then you’re going to feel like. people don’t use japanese fcs.

people might be writing shitty japanese stereotypes or portrayals.

regardless if… all or none of the above is what you think, if you feel like an ethnicity is being slept on in the rpc. you are not wrong. you are also not alone. this is not the only group that feels this way. a big reason i run @vietrpc is for similar reasons. i wanted to see more viet faces. i wanted to see more diversity. but— lbr, the frequency of just lana condor in an rp will probably equal to the frequency of vietnamese people in the world. even though, lana condor is the only viet person ppl play (s/o to jessica vu, hyulari + karrueche for trying tho).

i’ve seen black muns do similar things when they say that people don’t play black muses. while most rps i’ve seen do have some sort of black characters in it. they just happen to be… the most ‘passable’, the most ‘acceptable’. we all love zendaya, but when she’s the only black person that ever gets used in the rpc– that’s not great. it is so easy to feel like… because these are token fcs, that they don’t count.

( note: i haven’t done the math. but i would probably put money down on that people don’t play black muses… to a level that’s beyond what asians in the rpc face. and there’s a lot more going on with this issue than there is w/ viet or japanese representation. i just wanted to reference it, because it is a similar topic.)

look. the rpc sleeps on poc. we know that. even if they use our faces. they still suck at doing it right.

part of it is most of the rpc is western. and… lbr… there’s really not that many asians in western media. people just don’t like using fcs they’re unfamiliar with. and they’re not willing to immerse themself in the japanese entertainment industry or whatever. that’s just going to be a thing.

part of it is. cough. racism. wow, look at the time.

lastly.

ok ngl that was… more work than i expected but it was really rewarding to see the data like that. if anyone enjoyed reading that or seeing that and wanted to see more, lmk. you could even help out tbh. i think it would be interesting to do this for other races.

my lab reports always include my errors, so, if i had to redo this, i would have a larger sample and choose a random sample of 20 from it. i would do all my data in excel so i could see how my data was affected by removing people who were less than ½ japanese. i would also maybe include… a poll on how people write their characters. inclusive of the following questions.

what is your race? (you may answer with non-japanese/japanese or your specific race)

what do you do to write this character? what references do you draw upon?

is your character japanese

this would weed out the white-washing ppl n ppl who just don’t play a multiracial character in that way.

if your fc was changed to that of another ethnicity, would your backstory change?

would the way you play your character change?

on a scale of 1-4 with 1 being not important at all to 4 being very important, how important is your fc’s ethnicity when it comes to writing and developing your muse?

these open-ended questions would help me understand the portrayal of japanese characters in the rpc

I can’t decipher your likes into a yes or a no and I’m not going to waste my time and everyone’s effort into a zine that nobody will buy. So far I’ve seen comments about contributing but not on buying and yes, without buyers there is no way that this zine is going to happen.

ok this goes very strongly against the ‘disliking yourself is cool and edgy’ thing thats very much The Thing To Do in both social media and my personal presentation of myself so i’m gonna put this under a read more, also it ended up being really long

so you probably know that i’ve got quite a lot of self-esteem and abandonment issues which most likely have their roots in the bullying and stuff i experienced in primary school and the identity and mental health problems i’ve dealt with for a long ass time

and those issues obviously really affect how i imagine other people see me. for example, there’s this group of people i know through uni that, rationally speaking, all have quite a lot in common with me, from taste in music to political views and social media aesthetics and whatnot. i know this, and i also know that the fact that they’re more aware of world politics or the social issues in the uk or even things like small local bands than me are mostly just due to them being from here, unlike me, and them having received a wildly different education before uni compared to the one i did. of course i could have caught up quite a lot during these three years, but this whole thing i’m trying to explain is a vicious circle and has kept me isolating myself and so kept me from learning as much as i could have.

so, even though i know these things on a rational level, even though i know that there’s very little, if anything, that makes those people inherently better than me, i absolutely cannot imagine them seeing me as anything else than a wannabe or a try-hard or just someone less than them. i would very much like to befriend those people and learn more about them and with them, but like i said, i cant bring myself to even try because i really think they don’t think i’m smart enough or interesting enough or opinionated enough or just worthy of their time.

lately i’ve been trying to challenge that way of thinking, and there’s been a few things that have happened that have helped me to do it. very small things like an invitation to a party on facebook, it being just a small gesture because there were about 200 other people invited as well, a like on a tweet that i spent ages wondering if it’s cool enough a thing to say (i’ve got a separate uni twitter that i follow all those cool people on since i’m too embarrassed to let them see my personal stan twitter), and just now when one of the coolest of the cool ppl came to talk to me in tesco. he seemed really awkward about it, not like awkward because he felt like he had to talk to me but didn’t want to, but awkward because he’d want to give a good impression but didn’t know what to say. and that felt weird to me. because that’s how i always feel with those people, but i would never expect them to feel the same way. i’d expect them to talk to me out of courtesy, if at all. and i started to think that maybe possibly there’s a possibility that someone, not necessarily any of those particular people i’m talking about, but someone, might consider me to be a cool person that they’d want to hang out with. and that is really, really confusing. i almost want to put up a poll on twitter asking if people think i’m cool or not, but that’s not really the answer, lol.

tldr: some people that i’ve always thought are too good for me might actually like me and i don’t know what to do with that thought

SnK Chapter 89 Poll Results

This poll closed with 770 entries. It was a lot to go through, but I appreciate the all the support. The poll was posted on Reddit and Tumblr, so I’m hopeful it’s a solid snapshot of how the fandom views the events of chapter 89.

What happened on the roof was too significant a moment for the characters to be completely unchanged by it. Anger, trust issues, grief were cited as factors. Interesting, many people saw the change as a potential positive.

My favorite positive comment:

Change, yes, but not necessarily damage. Their relationships will grow from this just as they have through every other arc.

This comment made me nod my head solemnly:

I REALLY hope so. I hated the serumbowl, but if it happened it might as well have some meaning and not have all the drama be just outta the moment. I wanna believe the characters have a say in where the story goes, and it's not just convenient so the plot can move to where Isayama wants to.

Many respondents noticed a general numbness in Levi’s demeanor. Several want to wait and see. But at this point, only 12.9% of respondents think Levi’s relationship with Eren and Mikasa is permanently damaged.

Levi doesn't seem to care about what's happening around him anymore, i don't think he''ll care about his relationships anymore. He looks like he's even starting to ignore his duties as a soldier.

I was expecting a more emotional response out of Levi but he's still hanging there. A lot of fans think he's much more distant after losing his liege but I feel like this sentiment is often what the fans want to see rather than what is happening? Levi behaves pretty kind to the kids the past few chapters though, even though they played a large part in his decision. Only time will tell I guess but I do wonder about his mental state...

Levi's rationality will help him cope with Erwin's loss in so many ways. On the other hand, his compassion will always make him understand what it's like to be in other people's shoes. After all the revelations, I'm pretty sure he has also considered Eren & Armin's time limit, and how Mikasa is taking it. He has always been that kind of person, rational and strong but never lacking in compassion.

To the mind of many, Hange is far less forgiving than Levi. 73% of respondents think her trust and faith in Eren and Mikasa is damaged, and 26.5% believe it’s permanent.

“Bitter Hanji is my life source. I need her backstory like I need air.”

Despite Hange’s open disagreement with Levi over the serum, 89% of respondents think their relationship will be ok. I agree.

The good news: 70.8% do not think Hange’s being cruel. Hange is stressed, heartbroken and grieving, and that may be making them more short-tempered than normal, but their behavior is not unreasonable.

The bad news: 20% of the fandom think she is being cruel. As someone on Reddit suggested, maybe we should put a fence around them.

I'm sorry for Eren, but also Hanji is really tired right now. She has a different position and has to face a lot of problems and other high ranked heads of the military divisions and making difficult decisions...and they just have not many time.

WASHINGTON — Banning Donald Trump from Twitter, a proposal first advanced by two prominent female Silicon Valley executives, was an idea whose time had not yet come on Inauguration Day, when they raised it in an open letter to Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s co-founder and CEO. But as the president’s tweets have grown increasingly belligerent and erratic, and with social networking companies facing congressional scrutiny over their use by foreign governments to influence elections, the once-outlandish notion seems to be gaining traction.

“Dear @Jack: It’s Time To Suspend Donald Trump From Twitter,” Ellen Pao, co-founder and CEO of Project Include, and Laura Gomez, founder and CEO of workplace diversity solutions company Atipica, wrote to Jack Dorsey, CEO and co-founder of Twitter, on Inauguration Day.

The conversation burst back into view this week, thanks to a tweet from Pao.

As this behavior escalates from the web and lands in real life, Twitter needs to set an example for other social media platforms by holding its users, and itself, accountable.”

Pao is no stranger to controversy in the valley, having brought and lost a gender discrimination case against venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins before becoming interim CEO of Reddit, a position she was pushed out of after a user revolt against her management of the heavily volunteer-run site. But then Stone got ratioed – garnering more than 2,400 responses to only 140 retweets.

The criticism kept coming — and the conversation about Trump and Twitter’s terms of service morphed into and collided with an ongoing conversation about Twitter’s abuse and troll problems more generally, pulling in more and more members of the Twitter team in response.

“We definitely have problems with abuse. These filters were added this year specifically because they were requested by victims of abuse,” tweeted the general manager of Consumer Product and Engineering Group Ed Ho late Tuesday California time in response to concerns about the “bot and troll” problem raised by writer Sarah Kunst.

“We have a focused team and made this our top priority this year. And we’re making progress. We’re not where we want to be yet. But we’ll get there,” tweeted Jack Dorsey, CEO and co-founder of Twitter.

It’s a conversation that’s sure to get even more heated in the weeks ahead, as additional revelations about Russia’s use of Twitter in the 2016 election come into view.

“ I think the public needs to know what kind of misinformation and disinformation might be appearing on their Facebook news feed or their Twitter news feed,” Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., vice chair of the Senate intelligence committee, said last month.
