Song Review: Midnight North with Brian Lesh - "A Great Farewell” (Live, Nov. 10, 2023)

Exceptional performance trumps marginal composition on Midnight North’s “A Great Farewell.”

Professionally recorded Nov. 10, 2023, in California and featuring Brian Lesh on guitar and harmony vocals, this just-released video is the sort that might compel lukewarm listeners of Midnight North’s studio LPs to catch a gig. Brian Lesh’s presence alongside brother Grahame boots the group to heretofore-unattained vocal highs as they sing:

Songwriter and rhythm guitarist Elliott Peck then goes it alone at the mic with sweet melancholia in her voice: If the sky looks like it’s never gonna clear … maybe we can fix it before the dawn

Exquisite presentation notwithstanding, “A Great Farewell” remains skeletal, its arrangement sounding more like a demo than a finished studio number played for an audience. But with Midnight North playing and singing as it does here, that matters less than it otherwise would.

I AM SO MAD about people always shitting on adult animation series. Like literally SHUT UP about how adult animations have “zero representation” and “lack diversity” when there are SO MANY adult animated series that have all the things you’re looking for

Like bro just do some research and look harder

Obviously my bias is Bob’s Burgers so let’s start with that as an example: SO MUCH diversity (body types, implied neurodivergence, etc) and representation in this show and the fan base is so minimal?? Like what??

Not to mention Tuca and Bertie, Futurama, Bojack Horseman, etc etc etc

(Inside Job, Disenchantment, THE GREAT NORTH, The Midnight Gospel, Human Resources, and sooooo many more)

Everyone is CONSTANTLY complaining about the lack of good adult animated shows but then never give most of these ones the time of day. I genuinely don’t get it! If you’re so mad about how crass and bigoted all the mainstream shows are, why are you still watching them? There are so many amazing adult animated series that are so diverse and representative of so many different communities more and half of them get canceled because all the internet talks about are the big TV shows like Family Guy, South Park, The Simpsons, etc (not dissing anyone who likes these shows btw, I am an occasional watcher myself)

How about we stop complaining about the lack of diversity in adult animation and actually watch the shows that are giving us what we want?

I’m not at all saying that all these that I mentioned are without flaws. They all have them! But what I AM saying is that maybe we should stop letting networks cancel the shows with what we are asking for because they aren’t getting any traction.

Let’s not insult an ENTIRE GENRE of television series just because the mainstream ones aren’t necessarily what we want anymore.

And let’s talk about the animation styles. STOP TALKING ABOUT HOW UGLY THEY ARE. Yeah, I get it, they’re not always the prettiest but the diversity of body types and races in shows like Bob’s Burgers etc is amazing. Like holy crap it frustrates me when people file down all the good aspects of TV shows just because they sometimes have weird animations. Like please, remember that art in and of itself is diverse and there are so many talented people that are putting so much work into creating these literal masterpieces

The point I’m trying to make is, maybe stop giving shows like Big Mouth so much attention (even if it’s negative) and watch the ones that are literally giving you what you want. Like guys, stop letting networks cancel great series just because you prefer to complain about the “bad things” and refuse to acknowledge the good ones

Song Review(s): Phil Lesh & Friends - “Cosmic Charlie,” “They Love Each Other,” “The Promised Land” and “Box of Rain” (Live, March 15, 2024)

For those who love Phil Lesh, the poignancy of the former Grateful Dead bassist singing “Box of Rain” on stage surrounded by relative youngsters on his 84th birthday was obvious.

His atonal baritone now raspy, his movements ginger, Lesh sung a fast-paced rendition of the song written for his dying father flanked by his son, Grahame, and guitarist Daniel Donato, and accompanied by Jason Crosby on keys and John Molo on drums while vocalist Amy Helm awaited her turn off stage. Forever searching, Lesh the elder led the band through a unique instrumental interlude before singing the revised, post-Grateful coda:

“Box” was one of four livestream giveaways from Lesh & Friends’ March 15 gig in New York. It began with “Cosmic Charlie,” which shuffled across the stage and overcame with music its vocal shortcomings.

Donato was the man at the mic and in the six-string spotlight on “They Love Each Other” and “The Promised Land,” where he shone on the Grateful Dead number and struggled on Chuck Berry’s track.

But the band provided strong support on the musical front as Lesh continued his tradition of torch passing and lighting the way for a new generation of musical seekers.

Arizona ☝️‼️ I dunno the design appeared in my head so I can’t really explain much of it other than me realizing I never really gave any designs dyed hair (other than Nj I think) so I figured Ari would cuz he wears that brightly colored hat and I’m sure the ring design is obvious that its based on the flag, also it’s copper cuz of the state nickname, iuuhhh I wasn’t sure what eye color to give him so it may change. Also the glove was cuz I figured why not since he pulled up with an oven mitt to not burn his hands off

Do you think they’d make a sizzle noise if these two touched?? I think so.

Btw I like to imagine Ari has pet ants. Because there are over 300 native species of ants found in Arizona and I think that’s really cool. Thoughts on this y’all???

Also should I continue to draw Alaska with the long hair that I made two posts ago?? It was real fun and I enjoyed how structured it was and it still felt like him to me and I like to make sure to keep Alaska’s native culture with him so I’d also like to hear y’all out on that one
